trip info ferry

Welcome to the Ferry Traveller.

This is a One-Stop Ferry site dedicated to consolidating booking on all Alaska ferries, BC ferries and Washington (Seattle) ferries quickly, easily and efficiently.  By using the site or by calling 1-800-686-0446, planning a ferry trip (or, arranging to send only your vehicle by barge) can be a fun, fast and enjoyable experience.

Ferry schedules, ferry routes, crossing times and fares for each ferry operator in Alaska, British Columbia and Washington State can be found by using the navy blue bar at the top of this page. Regular news updates for the Alaska Marine ferries, BC ferries and the Seattle to Victoria ferries can be found by clicking Ferry News in the navy bar.  We continue to wait for the Florida-Cuba vehicle / passenger ferry service to begin. Information on that route will be posted here as soon as ferry service is confirmed.

Two maps are available from the navy blue bar at the top of any page. The first shows  a map of the Alaska ferry routes,  and the second a  map of the BC / Washington ferry routes . The BC / Washington ferry map is live, so clicking on any port delivers additional ferry related information for that port, and it also provides the timetables and base price fares for any ferry route. Be aware that since the State of Alaska introduced dynamic pricing 2 years ago ( as space on any ferry decreases the price increases), only the "Get Quote or Book Here" engine found in each page will deliver the current pricing. This means that booking as far in advance as possible will always deliver the lowest price

Vessel type and service information for Alaska ferries, BC ferries, the Seattle to Victoria Clipper ferries , the Alaska Inter-Island Ferry Authority to Prince of Wales Island, the Port Angeles to Victoria Coho ferry (Blackball) and Washington State ferries (Anacortes-Sidney) is also detailed on this ferry dedicated site...

Accommodation suggestions on each port page enable you to quickly and easily find lodging (all lodging, RV Parks etc. having been recommended by ferry travellers for any ferry served port. All properties shown have live links so you always access the latest information.

To view ferry schedules or updated news for the Alaska ferries (or any specific Alaska ferry), Seattle to Victoria ferry (Clipper Vacations), BC Ferries, Washington State ferries, BlackBall Transports' MV Coho ferry or, the Inter Island Ferry Authority, use the Schedules link or Ferry News link in the navy bar at the top of the page.

Ferry Options for Travel from Honolulu to Maui

If you’re planning a trip from Honolulu to Maui, taking the ferry is a convenient and scenic way to travel between the two islands. There are several ferry options available, each offering its own unique features and benefits.

Let’s take a look at some of the popular ferry services you can choose from:

The Expeditions Ferry

The Expeditions Ferry is a popular choice among travelers due to its reliability and affordability.

Operating between Lahaina on Maui and the Aloha Tower Marketplace in Honolulu, this ferry offers a comfortable ride with stunning views of the ocean. The journey takes approximately 90 minutes , allowing you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The Expeditions Ferry also provides spacious seating, onboard amenities such as restrooms and snacks, and friendly staff who are always ready to assist you.

The Super Ferry

The Super Ferry, also known as the Hawaii Superferry , was once a popular choice for inter-island travel. However, it ceased operations in 2009 due to legal and environmental issues.

While the Super Ferry is no longer available , it played a significant role in connecting the islands of Oahu and Maui. Its demise led to the rise of other ferry services, offering even more options for travelers.

Smaller Passenger-Only Ferries

In addition to the larger ferry services, there are also smaller passenger-only ferries that operate between Honolulu and Maui. These ferries cater to those who prefer a more intimate and personalized experience.

While they may have limited amenities compared to larger ferries, they offer a quicker journey time and a closer connection with the ocean.

Some of these smaller ferries even offer snorkeling or whale-watching opportunities along the way, allowing you to make the most of your journey.

When planning your trip from Honolulu to Maui, i t’s essential to consider factors such as ferry schedules, ticket prices, and any special offers or promotions available . It’s recommended to check the official websites of the ferry services mentioned above for the most up-to-date information.

Ferry Fares, Fees and Amenities

Comparing ferry ticket costs.

When planning a trip from Honolulu to Maui, one of the first things to consider is the cost of ferry tickets. The fare for the ferry ride can vary depending on factors such as the time of year, the day of the week, and whether you choose to travel with a vehicle or as a foot passenger .

It’s always a good idea to compare prices from different ferry operators to find the best deal for your journey.

For example, one popular ferry service, Hawaii Ferry, offers a range of ticket prices depending on the type of passenger and vehicle. Adults typically pay around $60 for a one-way trip, while children and seniors may receive discounted rates. Vehicle fares start at around $100 for a standard car, with additional charges for larger vehicles or trailers.

Another well-known operator, Expeditions , offers similar prices for foot passengers but provides lower rates for vehicles , starting at around $50 for a standard car.

It’s worth noting that prices are subject to change, so it’s essential to check the websites of different ferry operators for the most up-to-date information.

Added Fees to Know About

While onboard the ferry, you’ll find a range of amenities to make your journey more enjoyable. Most ferries offer comfortable seating options, both indoors and outdoors, allowing you to relax and take in the beautiful views of the ocean. Some ferries even have air-conditioned cabins for those seeking a more luxurious experience.

In terms of food and beverages, snack bars or cafes are often available onboard , offering a selection of refreshments and light meals. It’s a good idea to bring cash or a credit card, as some ferry operators may not accept debit cards.

Additionally, many ferries provide restrooms for passenger convenience. These facilities are usually well-maintained and equipped with the necessary amenities.

Before setting sail, it’s always a good idea to check the websites of different ferry operators to learn more about the specific amenities offered on each ferry. This way, you can plan and prepare for a comfortable and enjoyable journey from Honolulu to Maui.

Booking Your Ferry Passage in Advance

Hawaii superferry

When planning a trip from Honolulu to Maui, it is important to book your ferry passage in advance to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind when booking your tickets:

When to Reserve Tickets

Reserving your ferry tickets well in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak travel seasons. Hawaii is a popular tourist destination, and the ferries can fill up quickly, particularly during weekends and holidays.

Booking your tickets early will not only guarantee your spot but also allow you to take advantage of any early bird discounts or promotions that may be available.

Booking Directly vs. Third-Party Websites

When it comes to booking your ferry passage, you have two options: booking directly through the ferry company or using a third-party website . While both options have their merits, it is generally recommended to book directly through the ferry company’s official website.

This ensures that you have access to the most up-to-date information, including any schedule changes or cancellations.

Additionally, booking through the official website often allows for more flexibility in terms of rescheduling or canceling your tickets if needed.

However, if you prefer the convenience of comparing prices and options from multiple ferry companies, using a reputable third-party website can be a viable alternative. Just be sure to read reviews and verify the website’s legitimacy before making any transactions.

Group and Military Discounts

If you are traveling in a group or are a member of the military, be sure to inquire about any special discounts or promotions that may be available.

Many ferry companies offer discounted rates for group bookings, making it a great option for families or large travel groups. Similarly, active-duty military personnel and veterans may be eligible for discounted fares, as a token of appreciation for their service.

Check the ferry company’s website or contact their customer service directly to inquire about any available discounts.

The Ultimate Guide To Traveling By Ferry

The ultimate guide to traveling by ferry by travel done simple

When you travel to a destination that is located near bodies of water that you have to cross to get to your next destination, then you will most likely travel by ferry.

Destinations like Thailand, Spain, and Greece are some of the first ones that come to mind when thinking about ferry travel, but the largest ferry system in the world can actually be found in Washington State, USA so ferry travel is more commonplace than you think and it’s good to know what to expect so that you’re prepared the next time you have to take one.

On this page, I will tell you everything you need to know about traveling by ferry so that you will be well-prepared for when you have to book your ticket.

I will focus on ferries that travel for larger distances and between main destinations and not the ones that simply cross a river/small channel or that are part of a city’s local transit system.  Those types of ferries can usually be treated like local buses with frequent departures and tickets bought on board or just before you board.

These are the top 7 things you need to know about traveling by long-distance ferry:

1. Your experience will vary depending on the operator and country

Ferries come in all shapes and sizes, some will only transport people while others will also transport vehicles.  Some might come with a pre-assigned seat, but most of the time you just take whichever seat you want once you’re on board.

Regardless, you won’t be restricted to your seat in most ferries and they often also have an outer deck for you to check out if you wish.  You can expect a toilet on board for ferries that travel longer distances and some of them might even have a shop where you can buy food, snacks, or drinks.

In more developed countries, you can expect higher quality vessels with more amenities, but there are always differences between different operators.  It’s worth it to do a quick check for any online reviews to see what other travelers have said about a specific ferry operator or route.

When it comes to changes or cancellations, it also depends on the operator, although most of the time your ticket will probably be non-refundable.

2. The larger the ferry, the smoother the ride, and vice versa

Ferries are not great if you get seasick easily, but on some of the larger ferries, the ride is so smooth that you won’t even notice you’re on a boat until you look outside.  But this goes the other way too.  If your ferry is a small one, be prepared for a potentially nausea-inducing ride.

I have been on some ferries (like the one between Ibiza & Formentera in Spain) that were so bumpy that pretty much everyone on the boat was seasick.  But I’ve also been on other small ferries that were completely fine so it really just depends on the sea conditions at the time.

Sometimes you won’t get a choice in the size of the boat and you will have to deal with what you got if you want to get to your next destination.

If that’s the case, the best tip I have is to get fresh air if possible and to keep your eyes on the horizon in front of the boat to help your body understand why it keeps rocking back and forth which is what causes seasickness in the first place.

3. There is no Google Ferries

Unlike Google Flights, there is no one website that exists that will let you see the schedules and book ferries for every country in the world.  Depending on the country and region, you will either have to go to the ferry operator’s website for that country to get that information or go to the local ferry port/terminal in person.

That being said, a good way to see what ferry operators there are for any route you’re looking for is to check Rome2Rio .  The best thing to do is to note down the ferry operators it finds for your route and then check out their specific websites to see schedules and pricing.

In addition, there is an online travel agency (OTA) that I recommend for ferries and it’s called Direct Ferries .  It has the largest number of ferry partnerships amongst all OTAs and it’s worth searching for connections on their site too, although be aware that any booking you make will come with a service charge of around $5 so if you want to save that money, just go to the ferry operator’s website to book your ferry!

And if you can’t find any information about ferries on either of those two websites and there is no website for the local ferry operator, then you will have to ask at the local ferry port/terminal to get information about scheduling and prices.

4. Consider also checking for flights

While traveling by boat is the instinctive way to cross smaller bodies of water, sometimes flying actually makes more sense if the destination you’re going to also has an airport.  If you’re not traveling with a vehicle, then oftentimes, a flight can be cheaper and quicker than a ferry.

For example, to get between Valencia and Ibiza in Spain, a ferry would take around 5 hours and cost around $50 whereas a flight with Ryanair can be as cheap as $15 and take less than an hour.

However, if the island or destination you’re going to doesn’t have a nearby airport, then the ferry will be your only option.

5. Booking in advance isn't always necessary, but it is recommended

Most of the time, you can just buy your ticket for the ferry on the same day.  Ferry operators have fixed prices and don’t generally increase prices leading up to departure dates like airlines do so there’s no risk in waiting until the same day to buy your ticket.

However, if it’s a popular route or it’s high season and there are a lot of other travelers, the ferry might sell out by the time you try to buy your ticket.

In general, it is good practice to be prepared and make your bookings in advance whenever you can to avoid any potential issues.

6. Check-in should be done at least 30 minutes before departure

There is no universal check-in time for ferries as they can vary by operator and service.  Sometimes your booking confirmation will give you a check-in time, but if you aren’t given one, I recommend showing up no later than 30 minutes before your ferry is scheduled to depart.

Trains and buses can depart their respective stations in seconds, but ferries require more time than that to depart the terminal so you need to be on board at least 10 minutes before the scheduled departure.

If you plan to travel with a vehicle, then you might need to do your check-in even sooner as it takes time to load up the ferry with all the vehicles.  In this case, I recommend arriving no later than an hour early.

7. There is a way you can take some ferries for free

If you’re a budget traveler or you simply want to save money on ferry tickets, one way you can do it is by finding the lineup for the vehicles that are about to board the ferry and start asking drivers if you can hitch a ride in their car as it boards.

If you’re not traveling with a big group, chances are that you will be able to find at least one driver nice enough to let you do this.  It does help to have a grasp of the local language as not everyone will be able to speak English in foreign countries.

However, this only works if the ferry charges people per vehicle and not per passenger if traveling by vehicle.  So by adding you to their car, the driver would not incur any extra cost and you would get to take the ferry for free!

Some drivers may ask you to pay a small amount like $5 as a courtesy to them or maybe you buy them a treat from the ferry’s shop to say thank you, but that’s nothing compared to the cost of some ferry tickets!

That being said, if the ferry charges per passenger in a vehicle, then you’re better off buying your own passenger ticket.  Make sure to do your research beforehand and check how the ferry company you plan to travel with charges its passengers.  Give this a try the next time you have to take a ferry.

And that’s all you need to know about ferry travel!

Ferry travel is often an overlooked method of transportation, but it’s important to be prepared because in some cases, it may be the only method of transportation available to get you to where you want to go.  I hope this guide gave you a better understanding of what to expect.  If I missed anything, let me know in the comments below!

Alaska Marine Highway Information

Known to alaskans as the “blue canoes”.

Want to have a great time and see the real Alaska up close and personal? Try the Blue Canoes (as Alaskans call them). The Alaska Marine Highway System achieved the nation’s highest designation for a scenic route. It is one of only 27 highways in the country that have been designated as an All-American Road. The 3,500-nautical-mile ferry route connects 33 ports and stretches from Bellingham, Washington, to the Aleutian Islands. Alaska Marine Highway ships run for 8,834 miles from Bellingham north to Skagway , across the Gulf of Alaska , into Prince William Sound, and out to Dutch Harbor , the tip of the Aleutians .

Additional service is offered across the Gulf of, Alaska stopping in Valdez and Whittier . The M/V Tustumena provides service from Homer , Kodiak , and Dutch Harbor.

Alaska Marine Highway

Blue Canoes:

Established in 1963, four years after Alaska became a state, the Alaska Marine Highway System celebrates 40 years of ferry service along the byway. A fleet of nine ferries, equipped with cabins and cafeterias, serves 33 coastal communities and offers a non-touristy, no-frills way to cruise our 49th state. You’ll meet real Alaskans and view the same dramatic scenery and wildlife that draw cruise ships to the Inside Passage. A U.S. forest ranger is often onboard during the summer, offering daily free naturalist programs. Ferry rates vary, depending on how far you travel and whether you bring a vehicle.

Food and Beverage Service:

The Alaska Marine Highway System serves hot meals, snacks, and beverages on all vessels. The M/V Tustumena and the M/V Columbia also provide full-service dining rooms. Vending machines make a variety of foods and beverages available around the clock. The cafeteria menu includes Alaska seafood, hot meals, salads, sandwiches, yogurt, fruit, juices and snacks. (Spendy and bland from personal experience!)

Alaska Marine Highway Cabins:

Cabins are available on the M/Vs COLUMBIA and MATANUSKA in the Southeast System, and the M/V TUSTUMENA serving the Southwest/Southcentral Systems, and are sold as a unit. Most cabins feature private bathroom facilities. Room service or daily makeup of cabins is not available. However, trash is collected daily and fresh linens are available on request. The M/V KENNICOTT has a limited number of Roomettes, these rooms have only 2 berths and no facilities, BUT, are relatively inexpensive. Sleeping bags are welcome in these rooms. (A cabin of any size is highly recommended from my years of personal experience, especially during the summer when the boats are packed to the rafters.)

Roughing it:

They don’t make it easy for you. Passengers without cabins will find a very limited number of recliner chairs and spaces to roll out sleeping bags. (Pro tip: On most of the older boats the thick seat cushions slide off so you can lay a few of them down for sleeping at night – Alaskans have been doing this for years!). Summers can be packed to the rafters. It can also be cold and stark on the outside decks under the heat lamps. Many adventurous travelers put up small tents on the deck. Pillows and blankets are available for rent on most sailings. All vessels have public showers.

Recreational Vehicles:

Foot passengers may bring hand luggage only, with weight up to 100 pounds total. (So they say, I’ve cruised over a dozen times and not once was checked for carry-on weight, nor was anyone else.) To help passengers get their hand luggage on board, baggage carts* are driven to the car deck. (*No baggage carts are available on the M/V TUSTUMENA) Passengers are responsible for the handling and safety of their luggage. Baggage handling is not provided. There is no weight limit on luggage carried in or on a vehicle. Coin-operated storage lockers are available aboard most ships for storage of small hand-carried items. Unaccompanied baggage is not allowed on board Alaska Marine Highway vessels. It is considered freight and must be shipped via commercial carrier or U.S. mail.

Transporting a Vehicle aboard the Alaska Marine Highway:

Any vehicle that may be driven or towed legally on the highway may be transported aboard an Alaska Marine Highway vessel. Vehicle fares are determined by the vehicle’s overall length and width, motorcycle fares will be booked at the 10 ft. length. Vehicles 8-1/2 to 9 feet wide will be charged approximately 125% of the listed fare. Vehicles over 9 feet wide will be charged approximately 150% of the fare listed for the vehicle length. If you are towing a vehicle, the overall connected length is used to determine fares. Access to the car deck is prohibited while underway. Escorted trips are periodically announced by the purser between Bellingham and Ketchikan and you have access to your vehicle while the vessel is in port.

For more information check out the Official Alaska Marine Highway website. For fare info here . For schedules here .

The Vessels:

The following vessels, from smallest to largest, currently serve in the Alaska Marine Highway’s fleet:

MV Columbia MV Kennicott MV Matanuska MV Tustumena

Day Boat & Shuttle Ferries

MV Aurora MV LeConte MV Lituya MV Hubbard MV Tazlina

In my experience, people are allowed access to their vehicles at scheduled times on all routes while the vessels are underway. This is to facilitate taking care of pets one may be gravelling with or accessing/storing baggage & personal items (not for sleeping or cooking in one’s vehicle). :-)

Could I be ferried to Russia to drive to Europe?

No. Not even close dude.

If I wanted to Overland Just Alaska after leaving Bellingham, where would I get off the port so I can drive to Homer using the cross over ferries Thank you

Go here to check out the schedules: https://dot.alaska.gov/amhs/schedules.shtml Depends on what month you go

We’re thinking of travelling to Sitka on one of these vessels from Bellingham, WA. We have a small companion dog. Are pets allowed?

Yes they are allowed. They have to be in a cage or in a car. Depends on the ship.

Is this a doable trip for over 65’s ? Maybe 3 nights on ferry in cabin then night or 2 on land with side trips and fly back home ? When would ferries be least crowded but weather not too bad? Thanks for any tips!

Sure is a doable trip. Ferries are crowded from May until August. Not terribly crowded but there are more people then. Any time is a good time to take a ferry in Alaska.

I’m looking at buying a car in a different city of Alaska. Could I have someone put the vehicle on the ferry ( unmanned) and I pick it up on destination?

Sure you can.

Hello, Does the ferry stops in Canada? Is it considered as an international trip and the os the American passport/ visa required? Thanks

Yes it can stop in Canada if you go that route. If you stay on the ship you don’t need a passport.

HI, I am looking to move a tractor/trailer from Bellingham, WA to Ketchikan, AK. Rig is about 73′ in overall length. Is this doable? I have never done this before.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Sure is doable. Alaska Marine Highway to Ketch. Call them at (800) 642-0066

Wanting to fly to Ketchikan, stay a couple of days, then ferry to Skagway for a couple of days and then ferry to Juneau to fly to Anchorage. Walk on passengers. How would one schedule such a trip?

https://dot.alaska.gov/amhs/

Does the ferry run from Homer to Bellingham all year? Traveling there in August 2017.

Ferries run all year. Not directly to Homer, but you can get there eventually. Here is the schedule: http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/schedules.shtml

Is it doable to travel from Bellinham to Dutch Harbour return? And how long does it take and cost please. I am over 65. Sorry also best time of year. Thanks heaps.

It would probably take around a month round trip! Go here for info: http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/

Today is Jan29th. are there any ferries leaving Alaska near whittier to Bellingham in Mid February? The AMH website is a bit messy to maneuver,

Check here: https://www.dot.state.ak.us/oars/reservations/CalendarFM.amhsf?selectMonth=February+2017&selectPort=WHITTIER&selectVessel=All+Vessels&action=Get+Schedule Apparently they only go to Cordova and back during February.

We bought an Alaska Marine Highway map on board (the really long one) but can no longer find it. We would like to buy another to frame to remind us of a fabulous holiday. Are they available to buy anywhere? I have searched every where on line with no success. We live in Australia but will be in L.A. later in the year & have a brother in Vancouver if this makes it any easier. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Carmel

No idea. But I’ll keep my eye out and reply back if I can find one.

We’re leaving Bellingham may 12 on route to Haines. But then we thought maybe we should get off and see Juneau. Would we have to wait a week to get back on the ferry to reach Haines?

Check here : http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/

I want to make a summer time ferry boat ride round trip from Seattle to unalaska. I’m having trouble finding out how much it would cost a single 65yr old person. Can you please help?

Call (800) 642-0066. It’s the Marine Highway direct line. The ferry actually doesn’t serve Seattle. Bellingham, is where the ferry would depart. It’s about 90 minutes north of Seattle. From there you would need to take a series of ferries to reach Dutch. Call them for more info. The new website is very user-friendly and you’ll find out more info by calling.

Thank you for all the provided information. We are planning to fly into Juneau in September, using the ferry to get to Sitka and then Ketchikan where we will fly home. We will be on foot. You mention “hand” luggage not weighing more than 100 pounds (which is pretty hefty hand luggage). We will each have a suitcase, full-size and were not planning on a cabin. Will this be a problem?

No problem at all. Make sure it has wheels as there are no carts on board.

Hi, we are planning a trip for next summer. We want to have a car and a small trailer and drive from Denver to Bellingham and then travel the inside passage via the ferries ending in Haines We are most interested in seeing the animals and doing some hiking and then seeing any ports that might be interesting (i.e. Sitka looks like fun). I “priced” a trip from Bellingham to Ketchikan (how is the Misty Fjords NM?) to Sitka to Juneau to Gustavus to Haines with a 30 foot (estimated, we don’t own either the car or the trailer but are looking at a small teardrop) and it was >6500 (ouch) for my retired husband, myself and our teen son. Any suggestions from you regarding how to make this an interesting, less costly trip would be so welcomed. Any suggestions of what “not to miss” would be great. We don’t have a specific timeline as I will be retiring and our son will be on college break. We would like to spend some time in Haines before driving the interior roads. Thanks, Pam

The ferry isn’t cheap when dragging a car and trailer with you. That’s for sure. One money-saving plan could be to drive your car and trailer through Canada to Haines and store it. Then hop on the ferry south to Juneau and Ketchikan. You don’t need a car to see most of the towns in Southeast Alaska. And by renting one wherever you need it that would be way cheaper then shipping your own around the ferry system. OR, scrap driving your own car to Bellingham and fly there from Denver. Take the ferries all the way up to Whittier near Anchorage, bus to Anchorage, and buy a cheap but worthy car there. Have fun in Anchorage then sell the car and fly home. Just a couple of ideas…

Hi Dennis, Thanks for all your advice. I have my ticket from Juneau to Ketchikan for July 4. Since I’ll be landing in Juneau at 9:30pm on the 3rd, I won’t be able to bring food or drink along for my journey, except some instant coffee packets and maybe some oatmeal. Can you give me an idea how much to budget for food/drink on board the ferry. Breakfast, a couple eggs. Lunch a light sandwich. Dinner, some Alaskan seafood. Thanks so much

The food on a AMH ferry is pretty much like the fare you’d find at a little league snack bar, you’ll survive eating it but it ain’t pretty. It’s basic and to the point. The hamburger is a patty, with a plain bun, a piece of lettuce, and something that resembles a tomato, with fries. The veggie bowl is a bowl of raw veggies. The fruit bowl is cut fruit in a Styrofoam bowl. They have packaged crackers, nuts, yogurt, milk etc. Budget? On a May, 2017 trip to Cordova I spent around $14 for a burger, a bowl of fruit, and a carton of juice. That’s the best estimate I can give you. I’ll look up the prices and post them on this page next time I take a ferry. No idea when that will be…

Thanks for the prompt response and giving me your best estimate of what to expect. My expectations are now lowered :) Appreciate the information.

How much are the coin operated lockers aboard the Malaspina?

Good question. I’ll post it here if anybody else can answer that.

Hi there! I have a family of three we are moving to Juneau here soon. We won’t need a cabin or to haul a vehicle..about how much would ferry be for us?

Go here: http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/ and look for fares from wherever you are coming from.

I am a U.K. .citizen and would like to travel on the M.V. Tustumena between Homer and Dutch Harbour and return. I would like to visit in early May but cannot find sailing details. I will travel alone but would like to book a cabin. Can anybody help me with information?

The Tustumena doesn’t sail out there in May. Here you can find the schedules. https://www.dot.state.ak.us/oars/reservations/CalendarFM.amhsf?selectMonth=May+2018&selectPort=Dutch+Harbor&selectVessel=All+Vessels&action=Get+Schedule

The Kennicott sails out there once in May…

I am looking for books/travel guide that may be helpful when riding the ferry on the inland passage. We are retired and are thinking of taking about a month to see and do all the area has to offer. Do you have any suggestions. We can rent cars when needed stay in hotels for several days etc. We want a relaxing trip not a hurried one.

Thanks Leslie

This is the highest rated book on Amazon for the Inside Passage: https://www.amazon.com/Alaskas-Southeast-11th-Touring-Passage-ebook/dp/B001NABVEK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515346376&sr=8-1&keywords=alaska+marine+highway

My husband and I are 69. We would like to catch ferry in Bellingham and do the inside passageway. Would prefer not to carry vehicle. My question is this. Does the ferries stay ported in each stop or do we have to change vessels every time we port in. Like Skagway for example, would the vessel stay long enough to tour about 8 hrs?

You don’t change ships in each port. You may get off the ferries to walk around in each town that has a long enough layover. In Ketchikan the ship docks a couple of miles from Downtown where the action is. A cab takes about 10 minutes to get there. In Petersburg the town is right there. In Juneau the town is 11.5 miles away. Ask the purser on the ship for the time there in each town. They’ve been asked that question a 1000 times…

Nice to find this info. We are headed to Whittier out of Bellingham. A couple more Food questions if I may. Is there access to microwaves, toasters, or Hot water for coffee or Tea that we bring. Is it okay to bring our food and drinks?

Some ships have small microwaves in the dining area. All of the ones I’ve been on have hot water available. You certainly may bring your own food and drink but they don’t like it when you sit in the dining area if it is nearly full of paying customers. There are usually plenty of other places with tables to eat at.

If I wanted to visit several towns on the ferry route during a trip, would it be advantageous to bring a bike to improve my mobility and provide options?

You can rent bikes in a lot of towns. With what it would cost you to ship the bike on the ferry it would be cheaper to rent, but, if you love YOUR bike you might want to bring it.

Hi, Thank You for the information. Their website is a little vague. Do you know when the summer sailing scheduale is usually posted? Im looking to travel from Bellingham to Skagway Mid May 2019 but I cant find scheduale sailings for then to book it.

https://www.dot.state.ak.us/oars/reservations/CalendarFM.amhsf Click the dropdown to the right to get started.

Gonna be on the ferry over super bowl weekend…any way they might play the game :)

No wi-fi or TV signal on the ferries.

As a UK citizen and passport holder, if I fly to the US I have to complete an Esta (I think it’s called) before flying. If I travel to Alaska on the ferry from Canada, do I have to complete any forms before arrival or can it all be sorted with Immigration on arrival? Thanks, Joe.

I wish I could help but I have no answer for you. But they might at the Alaska Marine Highway here – https://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/contact.shtml

i need to get my sons truck onto the ferry but its being dropped off from a car carrier and they wont drive it onto the ferry. any suggestions of how to get it on? we are from PA and my son will pick it up in Whittier. Alaska Marine Hwy said they cant help.

Wish I could but the only thing I can think of is calling the Bellingham taxi companies and asking if they’d do it. Taxi companies do a lot of different services.

Hello, I am trying get from Port Hardy to Atlin BC, and it looks like the Alaska Marine Hwy is the fastest way. Is there a ferry that stops in Vancouver island and goes close to the Atlin area? Thanks

You’ll have to check the BCFerry site here: https://www.bcferries.com/

Hi! Carolyn asked this question in 1/18 and I have nearly the same question: “We would like to catch ferry in Bellingham and do the inside passageway. ” but a few more.

1. Which ferry/route/s can you take from Bellingham to do the Inside Passage? 2. I’m trying to find an itinerary that does the Inside Passage and Prince William Sound using the this amazing Alaskan ferry system — I’m sure one exists — but can’t find one. Can you point me to one? Thank you!

Here is the route page on the AMH site: http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/route.shtml

I am interested in taking the ferry from Whittier to Bellingham, WA along with my vehicle. Is it possible to get off at different points along the way and catch the next ferry or does one have to stay on one ferry the entire journey

With a car it is locked in until you arrive to your destination. You may walk off the ship and tour each town but you must be back on 30 minutes before departure. With a vehicle you could pay for a trip to each town, get off then catch the next ferry and pay again. But the ferries don’t run everyday so you’d have a wait between each one.

Does a ship travel southbound from Prince Rupert to Bellingham ?

Not at the moment. There is a dispute about customs officials in Canada so it’s not for the moment.

I’m hoping to transport a 26′ boat on trailer from Valdez to Whittier, in addition I shall be driving a car, can the ferry accommodate these on the same trip? What would be the cost of this. Thanks for any info you can give me

They can certainly accommodate those. You’ll have to look up the prices here: https://dot.alaska.gov/amhs/index.shtml

Planning a trip to Alaska in November 2020. We plan to take the Ferry from Sitka to Haines. We will get a cabin. Is bedding provided? If not, what do you suggest?

You’ll have to supply your own sleeping bags

My daughter and I are planning a trip from Bellingham to Wrangell for summer of 2021. I am a 75 year old man and we would need a two berth cabin ( no bunk beds please) with a bathroom. We would like a full service dining room on the ship if possible but could ‘get by’ with buffet style and eating in our cabin. We will not be bringing a vehicle with us. Could you give me a cost estimate for the trip? Thank you.

Go here for that: http://dot.alaska.gov/amhs/fares.shtml

Dennis I clicked on the link you provided and it contained a lot of information but NOTHING to do with our trip or the fares. The ‘sailing search’ did not have any drop down menus like the description said that it did. I tried everything but could not get any answers. Could you please just answer my questions and/or show me an easier way to get the answers that I need. Also, the last time I got a stateroom bedding was provided, is it still provided or do we need to bring sleeping bags?

Well maybe the website is paused at the moment because of Covid. You can call the toll free number and they’ll answer everything. (800) 642-0066

Leaving from Québec, we are planning going to Alaska with our VR. Is there a ferry leaving from Whittier Ak to vancouver BC? I will be grateful for some explanations in ordre to plan our trip. Thank you.

No ferry to Vancouver. There is one from Prince Rupert BC though… Don’t know if Covid is blocking it though. Check the AMH website.

We will be visiting Sept 14 – 28. How far can we drive from Anchorage to Juneau & where would be best to get a ferry to Juneau? Or should we fly from Anchorage to Juneau?

Anchorage to Haines by highway is 775 miles. From there you can catch a ferry to Juneau. Most of the fall leaves may be gone by then. But with Alaska getting warmer and staying warmer, maybe not. The flight is only 90 minutes so it’s up to you.

I am planning a trip sometime around June 2023, with myself (68 yrs. old) and my three grandsons (16,13.and 10 yrs. old), driving from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Anchoridge. After a few days in and around Anchoridge. I would like to ferry us and my Chevy Siverado to Washington and drive home. Can you give me any or tips or suggestions that would enhance our trip, where would be a good place to depart from Alaska for Washington, What would the approximate cost be from Alaska to Washington ?,

The AMH ferry leaves from Bellingham, Washington. All of the other answers you seek are right here at https://dot.alaska.gov/amhs/index.shtml

I am looking at getting a pilot house boat built. It will be housed on the Kenai Peninsula and I would like to use the marine highway to take it to Kodiak or south east for adventures. Is there any size limitations for truck and boat to get on to the ferry?

There are limits since the ship is only so big inside. Go here to see: https://dot.alaska.gov/amhs/policies.shtml

I envision sitting on the deck in a chair watching the scenery go by. What are my chances of finding an empty chair on the Matanuska this week from Bellingham to Juneau? I have small collapsible chairs I can bring. Will they allow them onboard? Should I use the luggage room to bring them? Thank you

Every week is different on the ships so who knows. BUT, this is the fall and there are usually a lot less people heading North at this time of the year. They allowed folding chairs in the past so you could call and ask.

2 senior women planning to go in the summer of 2023. Need 2 beds & bathroom. Leave from Bellingham. Are stops in the towns long enough to get out to explore a bit? Then could we get back on the same boat to continue the trip? Is it best to book through the Alaska Marine Hwy System or another vendor? Thanks for the info.

Always best to book through the AMH website. If the boat stops long enough for a walk around they will announce it and you certainly may get off for a while.

Is it possible to book passage from Prince Rupert to Haines with a truck camper and make stops in several towns e.g. Ketchikan, Petersburg with the truck for a day or more? Wanting to retrace a trip we did in 1974 (back then we only had to book our departure from PR, just catching the next northbound boat as fancy struck us). I know we won’t be able to do that in 2024! Probably looking for mid August passage.

You can get on and off along the route between stops while on foot no problem. Just make it back before they sail on obviously. You’d have to pay with the truck each time if there is space. Sometimes they are full during summer.

Vacation in Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre is a one-of-a-kind travel destination. If you are in Geno a on vacation, you should take advantage of the opportunity to visit the 5 most famous UNESCO Heritage villages in Liguria. Why? Because each one has its own personality and treasures to discover, from colorful houses climbing the hills to hidden beaches and breathtaking hiking trails.

A trip to the Cinque Terre will allow you to experience the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of the local communities and unplug for a few days. Cinque Terre is ideal for a vacation with friends , couples, or family.

How to get to Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre can be reached by train, ferry, or car (though this is the least recommended option).

The main train line connecting Milan and Genoa stops in La Spezia before continuing on to Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare. In addition to regional trains , the Cinque Terre Express operates during certain months of the year, with departures every 15 minutes.

Getting to the Cinque Terre by sea is another popular option. From March to November, ferries depart from La Spezia, Portovenere, and the towns of Lerici and Levanto. There are also scheduled ferry trips from Genoa to Monterosso. More information on ferries to the Cinque Terre can be found in our dedicated section.

If you plan to drive to the Cinque Terre villages, keep in mind that the roads are quite narrow, full of curves, and very busy in the summer. In addition, parking in Cinque Terre is extremely limited.

Useful info : Cinque Terre is about 85 km from Genoa. You could combine two trips by taking a ferry from Sardinia or Sicily to Genoa and then continuing on to Cinque Terre.

Beaches in Cinque Terre

In addition to the beauty of the villages, the Cinque Terre is famous for its sea. Despite its steep cliffs and rocky inlets , this region has some sandy areas and well-equipped accommodations.

Here are the 6 best Cinque Terre beaches not to be missed:

  • Fegina beach (Monterosso): it is the largest of the Cinque Terre and is close to the village's train station. The majority of the shoreline is sandy, with some rocks here and there. The sea is also crystal clear, with deep waters. Sunbeds, umbrellas, and showers are available on the beach.
  • Spiaggia del Gigante (Monterosso): this small free beach near the marina gets its name from the imposing statue of the god Neptune that towers over the bay. As it is very crowded during the summer, we recommend going early in the morning to enjoy the sea in peace.
  • Canneto beach (Riomaggiore): it is located just before the village of Riomaggiore and is considered one of the most beautiful in the Cinque Terre. It's a sandbar dotted with stones and pebbles, framed by a sheer cliff overlooking the sea. Natural freshwater waterfalls also cascade down the rocks on one side. The only way to get to the beach is by boat.
  • Fossola beach (Riomaggiore): this is a scenic cove with dark pebbles that can only be reached by sea. It is wild and sheltered from the winds. The cove is popular among locals and is located between the village of the same name and the promontory of Punta Montenero.
  • Vernazza beach : this small cove among the rocks is near the boat pier and the Santa Margherita church. The surrounding scenery is breathtaking, and the sandy section of the beach has a designated swimming area. It is a 5-minute walk from Vernazza station.
  • Guvano beach (Corniglia): this wild little beach has been popular since the 1970s and still retains the hippie atmosphere of the time. It's a secluded spot with sand and white pebbles that's popular with naturists. At the moment, the beach can only be reached by sea.

Nightlife in Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a peaceful getaway away from the usual nightlife.

Restaurants, cafes, and bars with views of the sea make the villages come alive. You can walk around, spend an evening on the beach  and simply follow the slow pace of the Cinque Terre.

For those looking for a more lively evening, the village of Monterosso al Mar e has a few clubs open until late at night. If you want to go to a club, we recommend moving to the livelier resorts of La Spezia and Sestri Levante .

Food in Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre cuisine is simple and authentic. The flavor of the sea and local vegetables shines through in the dishes, which are enhanced by the region's exceptional extra-vergine olive oil . In addition to small restaurants with views of the sea , Cinque Terre focuses on street food and has something for everyone's taste.

Here are some delicacies to try during your trip to Cinque Terre:

  • the anchovies of Monterosso (marinated, fried or even stuffed)
  • Vernazza's tian de anciue , a dish of anchovies, potatoes, fresh tomatoes and various herbs made in the pan
  • stuffed mussels
  • mixed fried fishes
  • the savory rice cake (with a puff pastry base and filled with rice, dried mushrooms, eggs, tomato and cheese)
  • the Monterossina , a cake with several layers filled with jam, cream and dark chocolate
  • local honey
  • the Sciacchetrà raisin wine
  • the lemons of Monterosso

Here are 6 tips for an unforgettable stay in Cinque Terre :

  • If you don't like crowds, we recommend you avoid Cinque Terre on weekends , during holidays  and in July and August .
  • Plan ahead and make restaurant reservations well in advance so you don't have to wait in lines or risk not finding a seat.
  • Every Christmas, the world's largest nativity scene , with over 300 life-size figures, is set up in Manarola . A chance to visit the Cinque Terre even during the off-season!
  • The small archipelago of Portovenere, which includes the beautiful islands of Palmaria , Tino, and Tinetto, is located very close to the Cinque Terre. Add them to your travel plans!
  • The Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area is part of the Pelagos Cetacean Sanctuary and is ideal for snorkeling or diving .
  • The Cinque Terre is a hiker's paradise , and the Blue Trail is among the most beautiful hiking trails in Italy . Remember that it is always good to check the weather, have good physical condition and appropriate footwear. For more info on the trails, you can use the official App with maps of the Cinque Terre Park.

Useful information about Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre is divided into 3 municipalities : Vernazza, Monterosso, and Riomaggiore (which includes the villages of Manarola, Vernazza, and Corniglia) and stretch along a 10-kilometer stretch of jagged coastline.

The first town you will come across on your way from Genoa to La Spezia is Monterosso, the most populous of the Cinque Terre. Following that are Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, the easternmost village. You can visit Cinque Terre on a day trip or stay overnight, as there are several accommodation options.

The largest village, Monterosso , has hotels, apartments, and family rooms. Vernazza is another option, and the majority of the hotels are located in the main square. If you want to stay somewhere quieter and less touristy, we recommend Corniglia , the only town that is not on the sea. Riomaggiore, on the other hand, is ideal for those seeking a more lively nightlife, whereas Manarola is ideal for a romantic getaway for couples.

The supermarkets in Cinque Terre are not well stocked, but you will find everything you need there. We recommend shopping in the larger towns of Levanto and La Spezia if you want to save money and have a wider selection.

As for health care , the municipalities of Riomaggiore and Monterosso provide medical guards and first aid services to residents and visitors.

Transportation in Cinque Terre

Once there, you can choose to travel between the Cinque Terre villages by foot, train, boat, or car.

The Cinque Terre trails are probably the main draw for those who visit these places. There is a dense network of well-marked scenic trails connecting the various villages as well as the interior (as far as Val di Vara). Keep in mind that the sections of the Blue Trail between Monterosso and Vernazza, as well as Vernazza and Corniglia, are toll-free from March to November and can only be accessed by purchasing the Cinque Terre Trekking Card.

You can also take advantage of the ferries that connect the various locations for a breathtaking view from the sea . Driving between the Cinque Terre villages, on the other hand, is a bad idea due to traffic and parking issues. Furthermore, there are no gas stations in the Cinque Terre; the nearest are in La Spezia and Levanto.

The train , which connects all of the villages in a matter of minutes, is the most practical mode of transportation in the Cinque Terre. Trains travel through tunnels carved into the rock, providing truly breathtaking views of the coast. Furthermore, the Cinque Terre Treno MS Card provides unlimited second-class travel and allows you to get off at any station.

Tip : visit the Cinque Terre National Park webpage to learn more about the Cinque Terre Card.

Ports in Cinque Terre

Each of the Cinque Terre towns (except Corniglia) has its own small port and unique characteristics .

Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare, Manarola, and Riomaggiore have postcard-worthy ports . Colorful little houses, fishing boats, pleasure craft, restaurants, and small shops contribute to the lively and welcoming atmosphere.

The Cinque Terre ports are not only a stop for local fishermen, but also a tourist attraction . Ferries arrive from nearby towns on the Ligurian Riviera, and a variety of boat excursions depart.

Corniglia , on the other hand, is the only town in the Cinque Terre without a port due to its hillside location. To get to Corniglia, either climb the Lardarina steps (377 steps) or take the shuttle bus from the train station.

Useful info : the port of Monterosso is the only one with wheelchair access .

Washington ferry fares increase May 1 for peak season

The state ferry system’s annual peak-season surcharge goes into effect Wednesday.

The surcharge will increase fares for vehicles on all routes by 25%, except for vehicles traveling from Anacortes to Lopez, Shaw and Orcas islands, as well as Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Those fares will increase by 35%.

For example, a one-way trip on the Seattle/Bainbridge Island route will see an increase of about $4 to $22.25 for a standard-sized car and driver, according to Washington State Ferries.

The surcharge applies to single vehicles crossing Puget Sound but does not apply to passenger or multi-ride fares. Senior passengers ride for half price, and youth ages 18 and under ride free on all routes.

The peak-season pricing will continue through September, covering the busiest months of the year for ferry travel.

Vehicle fares are available online at  wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/fares .

Fares vary by route, depending on location, sailing time and other factors.

For Port Townsend/Coupeville and Anacortes/San Juan Islands routes, travelers can reserve their spot on the ferry for the summer season through Washington State Ferries’ website.

Fact Check: Can Daufuskie ferry operator ban island residents from riding? Has it happened?

Since Jan. 1 of this year, Beaufort County has contracted with Lowcountry Ferry to run the public boat service between Daufuskie and Hilton Head Islands. The relationship has gone through some choppy waters and now there are accusations that access to a public dock has been partly restricted and one resident and her family have been prohibited from riding the boat, according to Daufuskie Island Council Chairman Kade Yarborough.

The ferry service restricted access to the public pier at C.C. Haigh, Jr. Boat Landing on Pinckney Island for a little over a week from around April 15 to April 23. The county asked Lowcountry Ferry to unblock the section a day after Yarborough made a public comment at an April 22 county council meeting. However, part of the pier may be blocked in the future. The county reasons restricting access might be necessary because other boats blocked the ferry’s landing access and illegal private charters embarked from the dock, Beaufort County spokesperson Hannah Nichols said. The county is considering permanently restricting access to the part of the pier Lowcountry Ferry uses during operating hours, she said. Another section of the pier and the adjacent boat put-in would remain open. On Monday, easily bypassable rope stanchions blocked off most of the pier.

This means the fisherman who cast lines from the landing, which is halfway between, Hilton Head and Bluffton, can stay. Boaters would be able to dock for up to three hours on a section of the dock and could launch their vessels from the adjacent put-in. This will be especially important to one resident, barred from riding the public ferry, according to Yarborough.

Lowcountry Ferry isn’t allowing the owner of Daufuskie Island Liquors and her family to ride because she was transporting liquor on board the vessel, according to Yarborough, and despite the absence of any South Carolina law that prohibits the transportation of alcohol on a boat.

The owner and many other Daufuskie Island residents have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the service’s prices and other issues since Beaufort County switched the service provider from the previous contractor, Haig Point, at the start of 2024. The owner of the liquor store didn’t respond to two phone call requests for comment.

Haig Point Vice President of Sales and Marketing Adam Martin said that while he doesn’t know the situation’s specifics, Haig Point never had issues with residents or store owners transporting alcohol during the seven years it held the contract.

Others riding Lowcountry Ferry’s vessels haven’t had issues either. A passenger stood waiting for the ferry on Monday, carrying a six-pack of Corona beer. Vacationers commonly bring alcohol over to the island, which doesn’t have any major grocery stores. On Lowcountry Ferry’s website, there isn’t any language prohibiting alcohol.

“I believe it’s just because this person really stood up to the ferry company and called them out in multiple ways,” Yarborough said. “And it was handled in such a such a terrible way. There was no warning. It was none of that. It just was straight to ban (her) and her whole family.”

Lowcountry Ferry didn’t respond to a voicemail asking for comment. When a reporter reached Lowcountry Ferry by phone in February they were directed to the ferry service’s email. Multiple emails have gone unanswered since then.

County Chairman Joseph Passiment said that he didn’t have an opinion on the docks being locked and referred the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette to county administration.

Buckingham Landing

Buckingham Landing, the previous Daufuskie Island ferry embarkation point on the mainland, was illegally locked and chained last month for 24 hours by a private boat service, according to Nichols. Daufuskie Island residents raised concerns that the ferry operator was responsible, but that wasn’t the case, Nichols said.

“That wasn’t the county or the ferry,” she said. “That was just some some random company.”
