One Day in Manly Itinerary – Top things to do in Manly, NSW

Manly is one of the most popular suburbs in Sydney, both among tourists and among locals, and only a ferry ride away from the busy urban streets of this large city. Located on the Pacific Ocean, it offers excellent spots for surfing, kayaking and scuba diving, as well as sunbathing.

One day in Manly, Australia

Established in the 18th century and named for indigenous Guringai people who live there, Manly has a number of heritage-listed sights and a famous commercial area known as The Corso with over 200 stores. There is certainly no lack of activities and attractions here, so this is one part of New South Wales you definitely shouldn’t miss.

WHAT’S THE BEST TIME TO VISIT MANLY?

The best time to visit Manly is the summer , which here starts in December and ends in February , because this is the warmest period. However, you won’t make a mistake if you come during any other time of the year, since although the water may be a bit cold for swimming during the winter you can still enjoy various other attractions, like the Northern Beaches Music Festival in May and The Manly Arts Festival in September .

A FEW FACTS ABOUT MANLY

Manly was actually designed to mimic Brighton in England, which is apparent in the way the streets lead to the sea. During its darker days, back in the 1830s, it served as a quarantine station for Sydney where all ships had to dock before the passengers were allowed to enter Sydney to prevent spreading of diseases. Now the quarantine building is part of the ghost tours and it’s also a very popular hotel in Manly.

For many surfers, this is the first stop, and for good reason. Manly is the birthplace of surfing in Australia as well as the fifth location for this watersport in the world.

ONE DAY IN MANLY ITINERARY

A ferry ride to manly.

Manly Ferry is an attraction in its own right for tourists who come to Sydney and is almost always on their “to do” lists. The ride lasts 30 minutes with ferries operating day and night, and it has been that way since 1855. Since 2015, visitors have been able to use a 17-minute Manly Fast Ferry, although it doesn’t operate as frequently as the iconic Manly Ferry.

Manly Ferry

Have a beachside breakfast

Once you arrive at Manly, visit one of its many cafés for a delicious beachside breakfast and get ready for a day of fun. Organic wholefood at Ruby Lane will help you replenish your energy while feasting on healthy dishes like their famous Paleo Bread with cashew butter. Leave some room for a bite of something sweet at Rollers Bakehouse, like their coconut and banana croissants, which are always fresh and warm.

Around Manly Beach

Head to the beach

There are a number of glorious beaches in Manly and you won’t make a mistake if you choose one over the other because they all offer diverse possibilities. It’s also very popular to get married on the beach here. Northern Beaches wedding venues are particularly popular in Sydney, so don’t be surprised if you witness newlyweds saying “I do” while you’re learning to surf. Manly Beach and Shelley Beach are the most visited ones , but you won’t make a mistake if you visit Spring Cove or Cabbage Tree Bay, which is great for snorkeling and diving.

Manly Beach

Visit North Head

Climbing to North Head will require a bus 135 ride to Manly Wharf and then a 45-minute walk up the hill in order to see the Sydney skyline and wildlife like lorikeets and fairy penguins. There is also a military installation you can check out and, if you come during the whale watching season, make sure you have your binoculars at the ready.

Cliffs on the eastern side of North Head, Manly

Have lunch at the Quarantine Station

The same bus that took you to Manly Wharf will take you to Quarantine Station on your way back from North Head. This historic building is a famous hotel today, Q Station, where you can also do some sightseeing and have lunch at its Boiler Room restaurant. A small shuttle takes visitors to museum and sandstone wall where passengers and crews of the docking ships wrote something.

Quarantine Station, Manly

Shopping in The Corso

The Corso is a pedestrians-only strip which is full of boutiques, restaurants, sculptures and palm trees. If you want to do some shopping, then this is where you can buy anything you want from souvenirs to clothes. Make sure to check out the Manly Farmers Market , as well as the Manly Arts and Crafts Market if you are coming here on weekend.

Corso, Manly

Go to see the fairy penguins

The last breeding colony of fairy penguins is located at Manly Wharf and you can see them nest between July and February . There are 60 breeding pairs and the best time to see them is at sunset when they return to their burrows.

Have dinner at sunset

Manly has several spots that look to the West and are perfect to watch the iconic sunset over the horizon while enjoying some fine meals. Hugos Restaurant on the Wharf is a perfect place to end the day with exquisite wines and fresh oysters. There is also a sunset cruise which will give you an even more dramatic view of the sunset, although a part of it consists of Manly Beach bike ride.

Sunset from North Head

Try some of the nightlife

Manly may be a smallish suburb, but it has a rich nightlife with something for anyone who wants to have some fun and relax. The best way to finish your one day in Manly is to visit one of its many bars which serve signature cocktails with music. If you want to try craft beers, then 4 Pines Brewing Company should definitely be a place to say goodbye to Manly with a drink. If you are for a more peaceful scene, try Hemingway’s , a place where you can have a drink surrounded by books and an atmosphere perfect for conversation.

WHERE TO STAY IN MANLY, NEW SOUTH WALES?

If you are planning to stay in Manly, then it would be a shame to miss Q Station considering its history and urban legends. Although, you will forget all about it when you take a stunning look over Sydney Harbour and the elegant design of rooms. If a hotel is too much for your budget, try some of the hostels in Manly like Manly Bunkhouse which is a 10-minute walk away from the Corso and each room there has a private bathroom.

DAY TRIPS FROM MANLY

The Blue Mountains is the most visited attraction outside of Manly, which is ideal for a day trip. This Australian wildlife reserve is full of gorgeous landscapes and trails perfect for hiking and cycling. From Three Sisters peak to scenic cable car ride, you will have a wonderful day exploring the nature and animal life of this Australian National Park.

EXTRA TIPS FOR VISITING MANLY:

Sydney is an expensive city and prices in Manly will be more or less the same, so make sure you know what to expect, especially if you’re traveling on a tight budget.

Tickets to museums and galleries may be available at discount to students, so carry your student identification card with you.

Don’t try to surf if you never surfed before because you may injure yourself or others in the water. There is a surf school on Manly Beach where you can get the basics and stay safe during the activity.

A Guide to the Best Things to Do in Manly

Beyond walking down the Corso to the beach, what other things there are to do in Manly? Well. lots in fact, so much that I live in Sydney and I still find things to do in Manly every time I am visiting. Read on for my insider’s guide to what to I love to see, eat, and do in Manly.

The Insider’s guide to Manly – What to do, see and eat

How to get to manly, everything you need to know about the manly ferry, what is manly beach famous for, the main attractions in manly, the beaches of manly, best things to do in manly, shopping in manly, where to eat in manly, where to drink in manly, where to sleep in manly.

This post contains affiliate links. Our full disclosure policy is here .

Most visitors have a trip to Manly on their list of things to do in Sydney , but once they get off the ferry, they do not know where to go. Some people don’t even realise that the beach at the wharf is not Manly Beach but the harbour beach known as Little Manly Cove to the east and West Esplanade Beach to the west. Both beaches are great for kids , but they are not the famous Manly Beach. Manly and Bondi go head to head for attention, and they are very different. Many locals feel Manly is more relaxed than Bondi – I agree – the traffic is better too.

The Norfolk Island palm trees that line the beach are a lot prettier than the car park fringing Bondi, I mean, I love Bondi too, but I could live without the cars!

Manly Beach Sydney Norfolk Pine trees

When Captain Philip visited in 1788, shortly after arriving in Australia, he encountered some of the local aboriginal people on landing here.

The Cannalgal and Kayimai people were the custodians of Manly and the northern beaches.

This meeting prompted him to name the area after them. “Their confidence and manly behaviour made me give the name of Manly Cove to this place.”

You can reach Manly by road or by sea. The critical difference between the options is travel time. We think the ferry is THE option. I cannot think of a circumstance where I would drive to Manly from the city.

Did you know: It’s quicker to get from the city to Manly than it is to Bondi?

Ferry: 25-30 minutes from Circular Quay Bus: the journey often requires a change and takes 50 minutes from Wynyard Car/Uber: 30-minute trip in good traffic but can take a lot longer

Confusingly, there is more than one ferry service from the city to Manly. Both public and private ferries operate along the route, and both accept Opal or contactless payments.

Arriving at Manly wharf

Private ferries to Manly

Two private ferries operate between the city and Manly and both make the trip between Circular Quay and Manly wharf in 20 minutes.

Manly Fast Ferries runs services between Manly and Circular Quay

They also sell a 1 or 2 day hop on hop off cruise that includes other key tourist spots:

  • Darling Harbour to Manly via Circular Quay and Taronga Zoo

Captain Cook Ferries offers two direct services to Manly:

  • Manly to Barangaroo
  • Manly to Watsons Bay – This one is my favourite time saver if you are trying to see a lot in one day!

You can use your Opal card to pay on either the Fast Ferry or Captain Cook, but these fares will not count towards your daily and weekly caps.

There is also the Captain Cook hop on hop off ferry and the Sydney Harbour Hopper which cost a little more but give you 1 or 2 days of sightseeing and make some stops that are not possible on the public ferry.

Public Manly Ferry

Public ferries service the F1 route from Circular Quay to Manly Wharf. The original Manly ferries the ‘Queenscliff’, ‘Narrabeen’, ‘Collaroy’ or ‘Freshwater’ ferries are named after beaches north of Manly.

There are newer Emerald Class ferries that travel this route but try to catch the one of the original services if you can. It’s a much more pleasant experience, particularly in rough weather.

Manly Ferry leaving Circular Quay

The public Manly Ferry service is direct from Circular Quay to Manly, taking 30 minutes. The first ferry departs at 5.30am, and the last one leaves at 11pm.

Can you get a ferry from Darling Harbour to Manly? At the moment there is no direct service between these two stops. You will need to change at Circular Quay unless you buy a HOHO ticket. What is the difference between the private Manly ferry and the public Manly Ferry? The private ferry services are a little faster, but they cost a couple of dollars more and do not count towards your daily or weekly Opal caps.

Manly has several claims to fame; it was the birthplace of surfing in Australia, the first place to legalise all-day bathing in 1903 and one of the world’s first Surf Life Saving Clubs.

Manly Beach walkway along waterfront

Manly Beach was the location for the first World Surfing Championships held her back in 1964.

Besides the gorgeous waterfront, there are a few other places in Manly worth exploring.

  • Q Station – From the 1830s up to the mid-1980s, ships were quarantined here if they arrived in Sydney Harbour carrying any illness.
  • North Head Sanctuary – walks, views, a war memorial and a graveyard
  • Four Pines Brewery – the first smaller brewery in the area
  • Manly Distillery – Try the local gin made with ocean botanicals
  • Manly Art Gallery – A small collection with everything from ceramics to photography
  • Manly Environment Centre – pop in to learn more about sustainability
  • The Sea Nymphs’ sculpture at Fairy Bower Pool

Manly offers both ocean and harbour beaches. The three main sections of the beach are Queenscliff, North Steyne, and South Steyne.

Manly Beach with seagull

A short walk around the southern headland brings you to the sheltered and beautiful Shelly Beach.

Shelly Beach is one of only two west-facing beaches on the east coast

There are also the harbour beaches you will see when you arrive at the wharf. A short walk to the west past the art gallery will take you to Fairlight and on to the secluded harbour beaches along the Manly to Spit walk.

Manly Cove

Head to the end of East Manly Cove Beach to make your way to little Manly Beach and Collins Beach. These are both great options for anyone wanting a bit of seclusion midweek, although they get popular on summer weekends.

Want more beach fun? Jump on the 199 bus for the 75 minute trip to Palm Beach, along the way explore some great Northern Beaches gems.

Oh I would love to visit the markets, sounds like a great idea 🙂

Lovely! I did the Shelley beach, but I wish I’d had time to do one of the bigger walks.

We did the coastal walk to Manly and ate the most delicious ice cream! We didn’t really get to explore though, time was short. I’d love to return and now we have the perfect guide! Thank you so much for this, really informative.

Very timely as I head to Sydney next week. I have been to Manly several times but never really “got” it. I love the idea of the walks though so will be rereading beforehand! And you can’t beat the views from the ferry!

I love the Manly ferry, such a Sydney institution but it’s true once there I usually just go the beach and not much more so it’s good to get other ideas.

If you can do one of the walks you won’t be disappointed.

Thank Nicky – I hope you get to put it to use soon.

Wow, there are so many things to do there! I’d love to visit someday. Thanks for the information!

Heading there right now. Heading to Circular Quay to take ferry over. Thanks for the info.

Hope you have a great day out William

The best things to do in Manly: a local's guide

Every day’s the weekend at this beachside suburb – but there’s more to the 2095 postcode than long stretches of golden sand

Not everything described as iconic deserves the title, but the double-ended ferries that shuttle between Circular Quay, past the heads and into Manly Cove are truly icons of the beachside suburb. The most visited Northern Beaches suburb is known for its surfing history, rows of Norfolk Island pine trees and busy thoroughfare of shops, cafés and sprawling pubs, but look beyond the well-trodden Corso and you’ll find tiny dive bars, indie boutiques and never-ending ways to make the most of the relaxed, outdoor lifestyle. Before Manly became a popular escape from Sydney’s CBD, it was home to the Gamaragal people, who were custodians of the land on the North Shore of Sydney Harbour.

Eat   drink   coffee   things to do   shopping, what’s manly known for.

Just how many beaches are too manly for one suburb to have? Well, Manly has eight, which explains why water defines pretty much every aspect of life in this desirable suburb on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. People come here for surfing, sunshine, skateboarding, swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, hiking and beach volleyball.

What's so good about Manly?

“You live in Manly for the lifestyle. It’s the kind of place where your mum always had beach towels in the boot so you could meet her for a swim after school during summer, and your weekends consisted of nippers in the morning followed by a pink iced doughnut from the local bakery” says Alice Donaldson, who grew up in Manly. Once she got older it was all about waterfront drinks at “the office” where locals gather on a Sunday to sink beers on the grassy verge overlooking the harbour.

How do I get to Manly?

What’s near manly.

The next beach up from Manly’s huge expanse of golden sand (so large it’s technically three beaches, Queenscliff, North Steyne and South Steyne) is Freshwater Beach, which is famous in surfing history as the very first location Duke Kahanamoku demonstrated surf board riding to Australian audiences in 1914. This beautiful beach is also home to famed Sardinian fine diner, Pilu at Freshwater. On its inland border is Brookvale, a semi-industrial suburb that has a growing reputation as a hub for craft breweries on the Northern Beaches.

If you only do one thing in Manly

The ten-kilometre Spit to Manly trek is best approached from the Spit if you want to reward yourself with snacks at the finish line. The route takes you from sandy coves to beautiful vantage points of Sydney Harbour, up and down rocky staircases, and to at least four secret beaches. Castle Rock beach is postcard perfect, so bring your swimmers and a towel for this otherwise hard-to-reach beach in Middle Harbour. Also pack water and proper sun protection, as there are very few water fountains and limited shade.

  • Restaurants

It's common knowledge that Manly locals are reluctant to leave the 'insular peninsula’ on which they live. One day spent there – swimming in the clear blue waters, kayaking to nearby coves, strolling over to Shelly Beach and surfing the waves – and you’ll see why. But it’s not just the beautiful beaches that Manly has going for it. Over the last decade, the seaside suburb has welcomed excellent restaurants – from kitsch Italian joints to luxe Cantonese restaurants and fresh salad bars –  a boon for Manly locals and visitors. Catch the ferry over to check them out for yourself. Here’s our guide to the best places to eat in Manly.

Drink

Hemingway’s (48 N Steyne) is the tiny Manly small bar offering the Northern Beaches a double dose of fun drinks and a whole lot of literature directly across from the famous golden sands of Manly Beach.

Donny’s Bar (7 Market Pl) is a bare-brick American-style loft bar where you can get a Bloody Caesar and a slider and pretend like you’re Stateside.

InSitu (1/18 Sydney Rd) is a retro-themed small bar and restaurant that also does bottomless Mimosas and tapas for brunch on weekends.

Manly’s bar scene gets a touch of glamour at the Cumberland (17-19 Central Ave) , an underground speakeasy hidden below an old-world delicatessen.

For craft beers brewed on site, make a beeline for the 4 Pines Manly Brew Pub (29/43-45 E Esplanade).

On a sunny evening in summer the seats out on the deck over the water at the  Manly Wharf Hotel (Manly Wharf, East Esplanade) are some of the most sought after real estate in the suburb.

The Hotel Steyne (75 The Corso) is a vast enterprise with different zones catering to any whim that may take you, be it cocktails, cider, Chinese food, pub classics, pizza, or a simple lager with the football on TV.

Manly Wine (8/13 S Steyne) has more than a hundred bottles on the wine list, organised into helpful categories that suggest more about how the wine will actually taste than a technical classification.

What’s a beachside suburb without a nautically themed small bar like  the Hold (24 Sydney Rd)?

Coffee

Born and bred on the beaches, Barrel One is a northern coffee institution pedalling quality bagels, sangas and a house roasted bean so good it’ll make you want to order another, almost immediately. With locations now dotting across the whole city, the Manly edition ( 40 E Esplanade ) is one of the earliest OGs – and it shows. Not a fan of coffee? Go for the oat jaffa hot chocolate instead.

Norma's Deli is a new and very welcome kid on the block. A gigantic Greek-style food emporium, you can get quality coffee, epic take-away sandwiches and a heap of groceries all in one fell swoop.

Skittle Lane   ( 81–83 Pittwater Road ) is kind of peak-Manly. White linen, airy interiors and seriously quality coffee (think house seasonal blends) reign supreme at this tiny coffee shop. Opening up onto an Assembly the Label store, this is northern beaches neutral living at its finest.

For bread, butter and bloody good coffee, there ain’t nothing better than Berkelo Manly . Fresh sourdough and actually really good gluten-free banana bread are excellent additions to any cup o’ joe.

In a laneway off the Corso you’ll find  Rollers Bakehouse (19 Rialto Ln) in a baby pink garage, baking croissants in every flavour imaginable and serving up their house coffee in white, black, filter or bottomless form.

Pair your coffee with a side of Scandinavian comfort food from  Fika Swedish Kitchen (5B Market Pl) , like a sugar-crusted, spiced cardamom bun.

The simple pleasures of good coffee and a Belgian waffles cannot be overstated at Barefoot Coffee Traders (18 Whistler St).

Get a colourful, tasty breakfast at  Market Lane Cafe (9-11/37-39 The Corso) that ranges from a superfood salad to masala scrambled egg or hot cakes, with Allpress coffee on the side.

Best Beaches in Manly

Above all else, Manly is a bloody good beach town. Fringed by countless secluded swimming spots, epic surf breaks and long stretches of golden sand, Manly is made for, and shaped by its proximity to the Pacific. For some incredible, and absolutely free things to do while you’re in Manly Town, you can’t go past the beach. After a pumping surf? Go to Queenscliff, North and South Steyne . Want to swim without any waves bothering you at all? You can’t go past the Hawaiian-like paradise of Shelly Beach or the secret seclusion of Collins Flat . Want to feel like a real life mermaid, no matter the time of day? Jump into the Fairy Bower pool and feel all your woes melt away.

If you want to keep on beaching, do the classic Manly to Spit coastal walk. Rugged, with stunning ocean views, you’ll get to walk past ancient Indigenous rock carvings, wander through the bush, and then dip into pristine beaches along the way. Pro tip: If you want to end with snacks, start at the Spit, and end at Manly – otherwise, views will be reward enough.

Best Day Spas in Manly

Manly is all about wellness – which calls for one thing, and one thing only: the humble day spa. Whether it’s a massage, facial or sauna you’re after, this town has you covered in spades.

Hit up Akasha Integrative Health ( Unit 8/7 West Promenade ) for an affordable sauna, massage and ice-bath experience – it’s $149 for a 45 minute massage and 50 minute private sauna and ice bath session, which feels pretty good. They’ve got an oxygen chamber on-site too for all those who really like to tap the wellness button.

If you love a bit of new-age wellness to help you unwind you could book yourself a session at Rimba Sweet Infrared Sauna (212 Pittwater Rd), where infrared light heat warms your body to help you sweat out your toxins.

SahSin Massage Therapy ( 9 Whistler St ) have been massaging Manly’s residents for years. With a massive massage menu on tap, they’ve got all your aches and pains under control.

Aqua Vitae Day Spa is good for a solid (yet luxurious) facial. From detoxing skin treatments to anti-ageing rejuvenation numbers, this is a one-stop shop for your skin.

Best outdoor activities in Manly

Frolic with bandicoots and gaze out across the whole city from North Head Lookout .

Manly Surf n Slide (West Esplanade and Commonwealth Pde) is an outdoor waterslide playground with heated water, so you can embrace some water play year round.

If you’re seeking some serenity head to Manly Dam (112 King St ) to commune with nature over a picnic or a bush walk.

You can book a game of beach volleyball on the North Steyne segment of Manly beach where nets are set up for daily tournaments.

Dive Centre Manly runs Snorkel Safaris of three popular spots in the area, and they take visitors on underwater adventures every day (10 Belgrave St).

On both weekend days Sydney Road is home to the Manly Marketplace , an open air market selling knick knacks, snacks, local art, jewellery, candles, hats and grocery items.

If you purchase a skateboard from Henrietta Skate (Shop 2, 49-53 North Steyne) they throw in a free lesson so you can get a handle on your board before letting loose on the lovely flat track that runs along the beach.

Add some adventure to your day with a four-hour paddle and hike organised by Manly Kayak Centre (Manly Wharf, East Esplanade) . Tours visit the historical, and possibly haunted, buildings at the old Quarantine Station.

Always wanted to hang ten? Book a group or private surfing lesson through Manly Surf School (North Steyne Surf Lifesaving Club), who will show you how to master the waves.

Hire a beach cruiser from Manly Bike Tours for $22 per hour and take a leisurely cycle along Cabbage Tree Bay cycle path. Each bike is fitted with a pocket bag for your essentials (phone, lock) and there’s a laminated map attached to the handlebars.

Best indoor activities in Manly

If you're headed indoors, make it for the Manly Art Gallery and Museum (West Esplanade) , which has an annual program of exhibitions that includes prominent local artists and major touring exhibitions. The museum is devoted to the history of Manly and has a marvellously kitsch collection of beach memorabilia.

Scare yourself silly at one of Australia’s most haunted sites.   Q Station   (1 N Head Scenic Dr)   runs nightly lantern-lit ghost tours for $65pp.

Shopping

At  Desire Books and Records   (3/3 Whistler St)  you can sift through the $2 vinyl record bin on the steps of a secondhand bookstore that has branched out into preloved surf-rock.

Fill your home bar, fridge and esky at Winona   (2/12-14 Pittwater Rd) , a beautiful wine boutique stocking the most delicious new-era natural wines, local spirits, craft beers and tasty snacks .

We all know fast fashion is a problem, so the next time your need a new outfit for a special event, why not visit  Department 24 (2/69 Pittwater Rd) , a designer garment hire studio.

Emporio Home and Flowers (185 Pittwater Rd) is pretty much all the nicest bits of life crammed into two shopfronts. There's the florist on one side, and on the other a deli café so you can snack and shop simultaneously.

If you’re trying to shop more mindfully, a visit to  Blaek Store (210 Pittwater Rd) will tick all the boxes thanks to their collection of sustainable, ethical & organic clothing and homewares.

You can shop first, then eat at  Ruby Lane Wholefoods (200 Pittwater Rd) , or do it the other way around at this café and organic grocer.

If you’ve done the lessons and have decided to commit to the salty life, gear up at  Dripping Wet Surf Co (2/93-95 N Steyne), where life-time surfers will guide you through board, wetsuit and accessory shopping.

With both a harbour side and a glorious ocean beach, Manly is Sydney's only ferry destination with surf. Capping off the harbour with scrappy charm, it's a place worth visiting for the ferry ride alone. The surf's good, there are appealing contemporary bars and eateries and, as the gateway to the Northern Beaches, it makes a popular base for the board-riding brigade. There's also some great walking to be done.

Early on in the 19th century, Henry Gilbert Smith, an English businessman living in Sydney, saw that Manly - with an ocean beach on one side and fine sandy cove on the other - could provide a great "watering place" for the people of Sydney, as Brighton did for Londoners.

In 1855, Smith had a pier constructed a little east of the Manly Wharf, the Pier Hotel was built and The Corso was cleared linking the harbour with the ocean beach.

Smith encouraged the growth of a ferry service to Manly. Excursion trips were available.

By 1856 a daily ferry service was in place.

A complete guide to Manly, Sydney

A guide to Manly, Sydney, Australia

If I was to live anywhere in  Sydney , I’d live in Manly. This coastal town can be reached in just 20 minutes by ferry from Sydney’s CBD and so it’s super close to the city but feels worlds away from the hustle at the same time.

Manly itself is considered the gateway to Sydney’s northern beaches and is one of Sydney’s most famous and well-loved surf spots.

When exploring Sydney, I find Manly usually sits beneath the likes of  Bondi and Coogee  for a day trip which is, I think, because Manly is more of a lifestyle to experience as opposed to a bucket list ‘tick’ like that of witnessing the Icebergs pool in Bondi.

In my opinion, a stay in Manly is one of the  best things to do in Australia  and definitely one of the best places to live in Australia (if you’re considering the working holiday visa).

Whilst you can definitely have a day’s adventure over to Manly if you have the time I’d definitely recommend staying a while longer. We spent a week in Manly and then couldn’t resist returning to conclude our time in Australia because we loved it so much!

Manly takes the laid-back, surfy beach vibes of  Byron Bay  and combines them with an easy-to-grasp dose of adrenaline from city life. In just 20 minutes you can be in the hustle of Sydney’s CBD thanks to the quick ferry that journeys from Manly’s port to Circular Quay: the very best of both worlds, in my opinion.

I have personally been to Sydney on 5 separate occasions and so I feel ready to help you plan your time in Manly, Sydney and to share with you this complete Manly travel guide.

The question is, are  you  ready?

Here’s my guide to Manly, Sydney, Australia…

Where is manly.

Manly is a region that sits on the Northern beaches of Sydney. With golden beaches in abundance, a very active lifestyle evident for most people, brunch spots galore and coastal walks at your disposal – Manly truly encapsulates the Australian dream.

Manly is super easy to access from the city. If you have a car it will take you about 30 minutes to drive over from the CBD or alternatively it’s just an 18 minute ferry from Circular Quay (the slow boat takes 40 minutes). The ferry brings you straight into Manly Wharf in the centre of the town.

If you’re coming from the airport, you simply need to hop on the train (20 mins) direct to Circular Quay and then swap onto the ferry.

Where you should stay in Manly?

We stayed pretty central during both of our stays in Manly and went for two different Airbnbs. Accommodation bills rack up easy in Australia, particularly if you want a central location. Quite frankly, we’d rather spend our money on food and fun, so we opted for a bedroom in a flat with an awesome location as opposed to a whole flat with a further out location.

Check out Airbnbs in Manly here.

The best things to do in Manly…

If you’re travelling the East Coast of Australia and are no stranger to an early start or two then you’ll be witnessing some pretty spectacular  sunrises . Here in Manly they are nothing short of sensational and I highly recommend you rise for one.

Watch the sun rise on the main beach and as the towns wakes up, grab yourself a coffee and sit on the wall that runs along the beach front.  Magical, magical mornings.

The main beach in Manly is a sight in itself and is well worth a  beach day  on. Aside from that I’d definitely check out the  Spit to Manly walk ,  Shelley Beach  and  dinner at Sunset Sabi .

A complete guide to Manly, Sydney

My favourite places to eat and drink in Manly…

  • All the goodness at  Bare Naked Bowls.
  • Japanese heaven and probably one of my favourite meals ever at  Sunset Sabi.  Book in advance; it’s hard to get a walk-in table.
  • Mexican loving at  Chica Bonita.
  • The best poke bowl I’ve ever had at  Fishbowl Manly.  Seriously (it’s on UberEats too).
  • Morning coffee spot on the beach front:  Rope & Anchor Cafe.
  • Gin and tonics at  The Glasshouse Bar  (they have a dedicated menu where you create your own concoction) .
  • Beach side cocktails at  The Boathouse, Shelley Beach.

Visiting Manly on a budget?

There’s still loads to do! Some of the best things to do in Manly are free! Here are a few free things to do in Manly for ideas…

  • Spit to Manly walk
  • Beach day at Shelley beach

Where to go out in Manly…

We didn’t actually have any mad ones in Manly itself but  The Glasshouse  rooftop gets pretty live at the weekend and the  Moonshine  bar on the ground floor is the perfect place to grab a cold one and enjoy some live music after a day in the sun.

Workouts to try in Manly…

I absolutely love the get active vibe in Australia. On the morning that I watched the sunrise I witnessed so many pre-work runs, volleyball matches and swims. It’s seriously motivating.

  • Dynamic Pilates
  • The Yoga and Meditation centre
  • There’s also a few early morning group swims that happen in Manly along with an awesome pre-work volleyball culture. LOVE IT

Top tip: If you’re not staying long and want to workout without a membership – most of the above (F45, pilates etc) have cheap / free trial periods!

My one-day Manly itinerary…

Day trips and road trips from Manly…

– Take the bus up the coast to  Palm Beach , the home of Home and Away. It’s not unusual to see the cast filming there – we did! It takes about an hour to get to by bus 199 which leaves right in the centre of town. You pass through a number of coastal towns and beaches on the way that make for great extensions. We particularly liked Newport.

– If you’re using Manly as your base,  grab the ferry back over to Sydney  and explore the city!  See my 4-day Sydney itinerary  here .

– A day trip to  The Blue Mountains  whilst you’re in Sydney is a must!  See my day trip from Sydney to the Blue Mountains  here .

–  Taronga Zoo:  The Zoo with a view! Head down to Circular Quay and hop on a 12-minute ferry to Taronga where you can view over 4,000 animals including Kangaroos & Koalas! Tickets start at $42.30 for an adult day pass, and can be purchased on the website  here .

–  Hunter Valley : Vineyards, chocolate, a brewery, cheese, and wildlife, all in one day!  See my post  here .

–  Walking –  See my post about walks to go on in and around Sydney  here.

–  Road trip  (my favourite kind of trip!). There are so many places you could go, including  Hyams Beach ,  Newcastle , and  Morisset .

Top Things To Do in Manly Beach, Sydney

Soak up the sun at Manly Beach

Sydney is famous for its beaches, and Manly is one of the best in the Harbour City. So it’s little surprise that most of the best things to see and do here are either in, on or around water. Discover the top attractions in Manly Beach, Sydney. Did you know – Culture Trip now does bookable, small-group trips? Pick from authentic, immersive Epic Trips , compact and action-packed Mini Trips and sparkling, expansive Sailing Trips .

Tackle the manly to spit walk.

trip to manly

The clifftop trail connecting Bondi and Coogee is Sydney’s most famous coastal walk , but the Northern Beaches’ version is every bit as spectacular. The 10km (6mi) track links the Spit Bridge with Manly Beach via a string of secret beaches, including Fisher Bay, Forty Baskets and Sandy Beach, before swinging through Fairlight on the way into Manly. For those with the energy left once you get there, continue on to tackle the rest of the trail, which hooks up with the rugged terrain of North Head.

Catch the Manly Ferry

A more chilled-out way to get to Manly Beach from the city centre is the ferry from Circular Quay, a quintessentially Sydney experience. The journey only takes half an hour, giving commuters a front-row seat to landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House , Mrs Macquarie’s Chair and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and is best enjoyed in the late afternoon when the sun sets over the glittering waterway.

Watch buskers on The Corso

trip to manly

When you hop off the Manly Ferry, you’ll notice that the wharf is linked to the golden beach by the Manly Corso. This buzzing pedestrian mall, which is lined with 200 retail stores, bars and eateries, also pulses with the sound of street performers. Wannabe musicians – particularly young local performers – regularly draw big crowds of passers-by on their way to the beach.

Learn to surf at Manly Surf School

trip to manly

Manly’s famous beach is shaded by towering Norfolk Island pine trees, making it an incredibly popular place to laze around on summer days. But for visitors who are feeling a little more adventurous, there are plenty of surf schools that can introduce first-timers to the waves. Manly Surf School has been offering lessons since 1983, catering for both newbie children and adults, as well as seasoned surfers.

Pass through the Wormhole

trip to manly

Want to escape the crowds at Manly? Just squeeze through the Wormhole. This little tunnel was carved out by fishermen over a century ago to link Queenscliff – at the north end of Manly Beach – with Freshwater, which many Northern Beaches regulars consider their favourite strip of sand in the area. In fact, Freshie, as it’s fondly known, is where surfing was introduced to Australians in 1914 by Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku, who is commemorated with a statue nearby.

Enjoy a drink at 4 Pines

trip to manly

If all these outdoorsy adventures are making you thirsty, grab a schooner at 4 Pines, Manly’s very own craft brewery. This bar near the wharf is where 4 Pines was born a decade ago, and the on-site microbrewery still pumps out a mouthwatering selection of drops fresh from the source, which go down a treat with the modern pub grub menu. Brewery tours are also available.

Watch an Eagles game at Brookvale Oval

trip to manly

Sports fans wanting a taste of Sydney’s suburban sporting culture should grab a ticket to a National Rugby League game at Brookvale Oval, home of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. ‘Brookie’ is a charming old ground that feels like it hasn’t been touched in decades, providing an imposing home fortress for the decorated Eagles outfit. Manly’s Shute Shield rugby union side, the Marlins, also draw big crowds to the Village Green on Saturday afternoons.

Climb up to the Grotto Point Lighthouse

trip to manly

Lace up your walking shoes and stroll along the Manly Scenic Walkway until you reach this century-old structure, which doubles as one of Sydney’s best vantage points for birdwatching – particularly cormorants and white-breasted sea eagles. It’s also a great place to spot whales during winter, when humpbacks make their annual migration along Australia’s east coast. What’s more, Grotto Point contains an impressive collection of indigenous rock art engravings of kangaroos, whales and boomerangs forged by the local Aboriginal population thousands of years ago.

Take a dip in the Fairy Bower Sea Pool

Fairy Bower Pool, Sydney, Australia

Sydney’s beaches are often accompanied by an ocean pool, but few are as unique as this one at the southern end of Manly Beach. Firstly, Fairy Bower Sea Pool, which was built by local residents in 1929, is triangular in shape. And secondly, it features a pair of striking sculptures by artist Helen Leete called The Oceanides , which look like a pair of dancers twirling above the water.

Kayak Manly Dam

trip to manly

The ocean isn’t the only area of natural swimming that you’ll find in Manly, as there’s also an idyllic dam located at the back of the suburb. Manly Dam is a popular spot for fishing, picnics and swimming, but the best way to see it is in a kayak. You can rent one from the Manly Kayak Centre to explore this tranquil waterway at your own pace.

Nibble on croissants at Rollers Bakehouse

This bakery on Manly’s Rialto Lane serves the best baked goods in the area. Delectable rows of freshly baked pastries line the shop’s display case, with classic butter croissants lying alongside more unusual flavours, such as chocolate and almond, and blueberry cheesecake. No matter what you go for, you can be sure that time and effort has gone into the creation – the team here spend three days proving, rolling and laminating their dough to perfection before baking their croissants.

Browse the stalls at the Manly Markets

trip to manly

If you love handmade arts and crafts, then consider a trip to the Manly Markets, which open 10am–5pm every weekend (except public holidays). You can find everything from jewellery to paintings and home-made body care products, so browse the stalls for the dream gift or a memento of your trip to Manly.

Drink cocktails at Papi Chulo

Manly Wharf is home to some of the best restaurants and bars in Sydney , including the very popular Papi Chulo. Alongside the flavourful food served at this smokehouse and grill, there’s a menu of creative cocktails, perfect for sipping while you watch the sun go down.

Relax at Shelly Beach

trip to manly

While Manly Beach’s long, open curve of sand stretches off into the distance, Shelly Beach feels more sheltered. Its arched bay makes it a secluded spot in Manly, and an ideal place for snorkelling and scuba diving. The beach is part of Cabbage Tree Bay, a protected marine reserve that lies adjacent to North Head and Fairy Bower. It’s well set-up for a long day lounging beachside, with facilities including showers, toilets and a kiosk, along with free-to-use barbecues – ideal for a picnic at the beach.

Get your culture fix at Manly Art Gallery and Museum

trip to manly

Escape from Sydney’s searing summer heat with a trip to Manly Art Gallery and Museum. Though small, the museum houses an impressive collection that belies its size. There’s over 130 works by the Italian-born artist Antonio Dattilo Rubbo, who spent much of his adult life teaching and painting in Australia, and a collection of Australian ceramics. Past temporary exhibitions have displayed various styles of painting, illustration, printmaking and ceramics, as well as multimedia artworks.

The Route

The spit bridge .

The walk can be taken in either direction, but manly people choose to start at the Spit Bridge. At the south side of the bridge, there are toilet facilities, and you can grab a coffee and/or snack at Grumpy's Wharf Café. Then you'll walk across the footpath on the west side of the Spit Bridge. Once you reach the other side, follow the path that winds you under the bridge. There'll be signs so you know you're on the right track. Once you reach Ellery's Punt Reserve and you're on your way.

Clontarf Reserve

Following the Fisher Bay Walk portion of the Spit to Manly for about 1.5km will take you to Clontarf Reserve and Clontarf Beach. But make sure you don't speed past the Aboriginal cave shelter on your left about 700m into your stroll.

Clontarf Beach and Clontarf Reserve are a lovely spot to spend an afternoon, and they can also give you plenty of space and comfort to get your bearings before tackling the rest of the walk. Use the toilets, grab a coffee and some food from Bosk Kiosk and fill up your water before heading off.

If the tide is low and you don't mind the sandy stuff, stick along the coast to continue your trek. However, if the tide is high, you will eventually come to a section that is unmanageable on foot. If this is the case, just divert to Monash Crescent (you'll see a sign pointing you in the right direction). You'll rejoin the track at the end of the street.

Castle Rock Beach

As you follow the Clontarf Track, in about 700m you'll come to another beach – Castle Rock Beach. If it's super toasty and you want a little cooldown after your first few kms, feel free to jump in. It's quite secluded and also bare bones in terms of beach – just sand and water. However, you'll also be treated to an ancient Aboriginal rock carving and, if there's been enough rainfall, a mini waterfall.

Grotto Point Lighthouse

This is for those who really want to maximise their time on the track, as it's not officially part of the Spit Bridge to Manly Walk. However, for those interested in a rewarding little detour, just make a quick right onto the Lighthouse Track and take it to the end to see the Grotto Point Lighthouse . After gazing out at the Harbour, you can turn and head back up the one-way track to rejoin the Spit to Manly walk.

Washaway Beach, a detour off the detour to the left, can be unsafe for swimming and occasionally (as the name suggests) is washed away completely. However, if you do venture down you’ll be treated to a great view of and through North and South Head.

Grotto Point Lighthouse at the end of Dobroyd Head, Balgowlah Heights

Grotto Point Aboriginal Engraving site & Crater Cove

Sydney is home to hundreds of sites that preserve and celebrate Aboriginal culture . One of the finest examples is the Grotto Point Aboriginal Engraving site on the Spit to Manly track. Located just a few hundred metres past the Lighthouse Track detour, this is an amazing place to check out sandstone carvings believed to have been created more than 1,000 years ago. See if you can spot an engraved boomerang and collection of animals.

Just after Grotto Point is Crater Cove, which offers up some delicious harbour scenery. This is an excellent spot to take a load off and refuel with some snacks and a view.

Dobroyd Head

For many, this is the best lookout on the whole walk. Before you take the stairs down toward sea level, make sure you enjoy this mesmerising vantage point, which serves up your first full look of Manly. It might just be the motivation you need to keep on walking.

Reef Beach & Forty Baskets Beach

As you continue on the walk, you'll have two more opportunities to stop and enjoy a spot of swimming before you finish off the Manly Scenic Walkway. The first of these is Reef Beach , located once you descend down the stairs at Dobroyd Head. Enjoy similar North Harbour views, but from closer to sea level. Another 5-10 minutes down the track you'll find Forty Baskets Beach , where you can swim, and the kids can have a swing.

Fairlight Beach

Soon after Forty Baskets Beach, you'll pick up the North Harbour Walk portion of the track. There are a couple of high tide spots here, so if required you'll head up onto some paved roads. If necessary, go left onto Gourlay Ave, a right onto Clarence St and then a right onto North Harbour street to get down to the reserve. Follow the signs as you hug the coast to Fairlight Beach , home of a popular rockpool that offers a little something different for trekkers looking to splash around a bit.

Couple enjoying scenic views across North Harbour from Fairlight Walk, Manly

The home stretch

At this point, you've just about made it. The final kilometre is straightforward, hugging the coastline as you make your way toward storied Manly Wharf. At that point it's time to reward yourself for a job well done. Walk down the pedestrian-only Corso for a range of cafes and takeaway joints. Or grab an outdoor seat and a drink at Manly Wharf Hote l , 4 Pines Brewing Company or The New Brighton Hotel, one of the best rooftop bars in Sydney .

If you're staying in the city, don't pass up the chance to enjoy the Circular Quay to Manly ferry route to get back to your accommodation. Otherwise, if you need to return to where you started at the Spit Bridge, just hop on a bus at one of Manly Wharf bus stops. The official NSW Trip Planner can help you map out your journey.

The other direction: Manly to Spit Bridge

Of course, you can do this walk the other way as well. Parking in Manly for such a duration can be tough. There are a few parking stations you can choose from, but they are quite expensive. You don't want a hit to your wallet to overshadow the beauty of the Manly to Spit Bridge Coastal Walk, so take a bus as suggested before. Charge up for the day at one of Manly’s cafes before heading off.

Finish up your reverse trek with some well-earned drinks and nibbles at Clontarf Beach. While it's a bit too early in the walk to really enjoy to the fullest if you're departing from the Spit Bridge, it makes for an excellent debriefing spot if you're coming from Manly. After all, it is one of the Northern Beaches' best picnic spots . Then you can walk the final little stretch to the buses near the Spit Bridge.

What to Do in Manly with Kids: A Local’s Guide

Angela saurine.

  • December 22, 2023

OAWK » Australia » New South Wales » What to Do in Manly with Kids: A Local’s Guide

Angela Saurine lived in Manly, NSW for more than 20 years. Now, she loves to revisit the beachfront town with her son Oliver as often as she can. These are some of their favourite spots

Crowds enjoying a Summer's day at Manly Beach © Destination NSW

At the southern end of the Northern Beaches lies the Manly peninsula, fringed by Sydney Harbour on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other.

Despite its popularity as a coastal holiday destination , there are still plenty of secrets to uncover in Manly. As any local will tell you, there’s a captivating hidden side to this Northern Beaches suburb.

After two decades, I thought I knew the area like the back of my hand. Then came 2020, self-isolation with a two-year-old son, and endless hours exploring Manly during lockdown .

With scenic walking tracks to explore, calm swimming spots and fantastic family-friendly eateries, I share some of Manly’s best-kept secrets below.

6 Things to Do in Manly with Kids: A Local’s Top Tips

Couple enjoying a walk along Marine Parade

It’s a phrase that’s often said, but when it comes to this Northern Beaches suburb, it’s especially true: Manly has something for everyone. Look beyond the luxe and you’ll find walking tracks, secret beaches and picnic spots galore.

If you’re planning to spend a day in Manly with kids, you can pick one or two from the list below. For a longer stay, these activities are well worth a place in your Sydney holiday itinerary.

Here are six of my favourite spots in Manly, all perfect for a day trip:

1. Shelly Beach Walk

An aerial view of Shelly Beach at Manly © Destination NSW

No matter how many times I do the coastal walk from Manly Beach to Shelly Beach, I never get tired of it. On sunny days, when the clear turquoise water laps against the sandstone rocks as you pass locals dining alfresco at The Bower Cafe , it feels a bit like being in the Mediterranean.

It takes around 15 minutes to do the walk in one direction, but we usually take it much slower than that, stopping to see the ever-present water dragons, the Oceanides sculpture at the edge of Fairy Bower pool, and the stainless-steel sculptures of various sea creatures that can be found in the surrounding Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve , including sea dragons, eastern blue gropers and gloomy octopus, embedded in the rock.

Oliver loves crawling through the tunnel of this sculpture on the Shelly Beach Walk in Manly

Oliver always loves climbing through the tunnel in the sandstone rock along the route that was carved by a sculptor as a Bicentenary project in 1988. Snorkelling at Shelly Beach offers the chance to see wobbegong sharks, giant cuttlefish and elegant wrasse, and there’s a kiosk at The Boathouse restaurant where you can grab a coffee or a bite to eat.

2. Manly Cove

Manly Cove in Sydney © Tourism Australia

Nicknamed ‘The Office’ by locals, because it’s such a popular place to hang out, the calm beach along East Esplanade is ideal for kids to play, swim and splash around on floaties as you watch ferries zipping back and forth across the harbour and boats bobbing nearby.

It’s not unusual to see a row of prams lined up by the stairs, or children racing dump trucks or riding balance bikes along the walkway. There’s a grassy area where you can roll out picnic rugs, a modern amenities block and a set of swings to add to the fun.

It’s especially special at dusk, when the sun sinks behind the bushy headland in the distance and the sky turns a spectacular pink and orange. After that, the families usually disappear, quickly replaced by large groups of Brazilian backpackers ready to take to their slacklines.

3. Secret Sydney Harbour beaches

Collins Beach in Manly © Destination NSW

There are plenty more beautiful beaches to be discovered in Manly, but some require a bit more effort to get to. Hire a kayak from Manly Kayak Centre and paddle past the multi-million-dollar harbourfront homes and around Smedley’s Point before making a beeline for Quarantine Beach , which was the first port of call for passengers disembarking ships to be assessed for contagious diseases such as the Bubonic plague, smallpox and Spanish influenza for much of the 1800s.

Pop into the museum at the Q Station retreat’s visitor centre at the wharf before continuing on to explore the gorgeous secret beaches , like boat-access only Store Beach (my favourite place for a dip), Collins Beach and Little Manly Cove.

4. Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club

Manly 16ft Skiff Club

One of the few restaurants in Sydney that has a deck over the harbour, the nearby Skiff Club is a top spot for lunch or an early dinner for families. I remember going there with my Mum and Dad when I was a kid, and I know it’s somewhere I will return time and again throughout my lifetime.

The stylishly refurbished venue is the perfect place to splash out on a seafood platter, with classics like chicken parmigiana, pizzas and burgers also on offer. There’s also a reasonably priced kids’ menu featuring fish and chips, spaghetti Bolognese, crumbed chicken tenders and a cheeseburger.

5. Tokyo Joe

Tokyo Joe in Manly

If there’s one cuisine guaranteed to satisfy all ages, it’s Japanese, so Tokyo Joe is a great eatery to go for a family dinner while you’re in town. Located opposite Manly Beach adjoining the Manly Pacific hotel, kids eat free with any adult meal purchased, so it’s also friendly on the budget.

The menu consists of all the usual favourites from the Land of the Rising Sun, including sushi, sashimi and gyoza, designed to be shared. Decorated with neon lights, the large, funky venue also has a few arcade games that are sure to be a hit with older kids.

6. Spit Bridge to Manly Walk

Weaving around the harbour, past secluded beaches and through native bushland, this 10-kilometre walk is an excellent way to soak up Sydney’s magnificence. There are a few hills involved, so it’s more suitable for families with older kids, but they are well worth tackling for the views at the top.

Along the way, you’ll find some of Sydney’s best family beaches perfect for a picnic and a swim, including Delwood Beach, Fairlight Beach, Forty Baskets Beach, Castle Rock Beach and Clontarf Reserve. But my preferred place to take a break is Crater Cove at Dobroyd Head, where you’ll find a cluster of ramshackle old fishermen’s huts built along the clifftop. It can be reached by detouring down an unmarked track through the bushes that leads off the main path.

The last section when starting from Manly takes you through a strikingly more tropical environment – all ferns, caves and trickling waterfalls. Upon arriving at Spit Bridge, cross over the road and catch a bus back.

Where to Stay in Manly

The view from a room at Peppers Manly Beach

The location of Peppers Manly Beach is about as good as it gets! Just across the road from the beach at South Steyne, you can fall asleep to the sound of waves crashing against the shore, watch the pine trees blowing in the breeze and pop over the road to build sandcastles whenever you feel the need.

It’s also a few blocks away from the Manly Wharf, where the harbour ferry stops, providing easy access from Central Quay and Sydney Airport.

The pool at Peppers Manly Beach

Previously known as the North Tower of The Sebel Sydney Manly Beach, the hotel is now managed by Accor Vacation Club. It has 42 studios, apartments and suites to choose from, two pools and secure undercover parking.

Family-friendly Cafes & Restaurants in Manly

Here are some of Manly’s best eateries to visit with kids:

  • Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club : A local institution for generations, the Skiff Club offers spectacular seafood to enjoy on the over-water deck. Weeknight specials are a big drawcard for local families and visitors alike.
  • Tokyo Joe : Chic decor and delicious Japanese cuisine make Tokyo Joe a must-visit for families. Share plates of bao buns, gyoza and karaage chicken wings for a memorable meal out with kids, who eat free with a paying adult.

  • The Bavarian : Located at Manly Wharf, The Bavarian is great value for families. Fill hungry tummies with German-inspired fare like pork belly, sausage and a range of Haus Schnitzels. Don’t forget to check the daily specials and lunch combos.
  • Fratelli Fresh : Pizza and pasta are always a hit with kids, and at Fratelli Fresh, both can be prepared gluten-free. For parents, vibrant house salads and steaks hit the spot, as does the blue swimmer crab spaghettini.
  • The Boathouse Shelly Beach : Relaxed dining is in store at this chic Shelly Beach eatery. Menu highlights include shareable starters and sides, as well as a notable breakfast spread.
  • Bistro Manly : Directly opposite Manly Beach, this beachfront restaurant serves casual-but-elegant French cuisine for the whole family. Kids will love the ‘Little Ripples Menu’ including a rainbow ice-cream sundae for dessert, while grown-ups tuck into Australian seafood and steak.

Visiting Manly with Kids: What You Need to Know

When is the best time to visit Manly?

Manly is at its best in summer, when the maximum temperature is around 25°C to 27°C, but it’s also the busiest time of year, with up to 1000 people pouring off the ferry every 20 minutes. My tip is to get there early, before the crowds build up throughout the day. In winter, you may get to spot whales passing along the coast on their annual migration.

How can I get to Manly?

The best way to get to Manly is by hopping on board one of the iconic Sydney Harbour ferries at Circular Quay. The trip takes you past the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House and Fort Denison before docking at Manly Wharf. Manly ferries run seven days per week, with a service at least every 15 to 20 minutes.

Several local bus routes also stop in Manly, running through North Sydney and the Northern Beaches.

Where do I catch the ferry to Manly?

The Manly Ferry at Manly Wharf © Destination NSW

The direct ferry to Manly leaves from Wharf 3 at Circular Quay, travelling without stops. If you’re starting from another suburb, Circular Quay is a transport interchange, making it easy to transfer from adjacent bus, train or light rail stops. Several private ferry services also travel to Manly, including one connecting Circular Quay and Manly with Watsons Bay Wharf.

How long is the ferry ride from Sydney City to Manly?

The journey from Circular Quay to Manly takes around 22 to 30 minutes, depending which size vessel you catch. The gate closes a couple of minutes early, so be sure to check the ferry timetable.

How can I get from Sydney Airport to Manly?

If you’re coming from the airport, take the 15-minute AirportLink train line to Circular Quay Station. There, you’ll find the ferry terminal just across the road, where you can catch a Manly Ferry. Pick up an Opal card at the Domestic or International terminals for easy transfer.

You can also take a taxi or rideshare service from the airport, but traffic can be heavy at peak times, and the trip can take up to 90 minutes. Public transport tends to be quicker and cheaper.

What is the best way to get around Manly?

Riding bikes to Shelly Beach in Manly © Destination NSW

Manly is very accessible without a car, and you can reach most destinations on foot. For a faster option, hire a budget-friendly bicycle from Manly Bike Tours . Boasting an extensive selection of mountain bikes, cruisers, tandems, and children’s bikes, they have options to suit every rider.

Manly is perfect for cycling, with over 20 kilometres of designated cycle paths connecting secluded beaches, marine reserves, and the National Park. You can even take a bike on Sydney ferries to explore the rest of the city.
