Because honestly? The actual process of gifting experiences can often feel… a little lame. Anyone who has anticlimactically emailed someone a voucher will know this to be so. The gift might be exciting, but the experience, not so much.

… Well that changes today! If you’re looking for fun ways to gift travel, whether that’s a surprise trip, an experience voucher or just a gift card for them to enjoy on their next trip abroad, this post is full of fun, unique, and creative ideas that are much more exciting than a lukewarm email. To sweeten the deal, I’ve even included some free printables for you too!

So keep scrolling. Your next genius gift idea awaits!

You’ll be very glad you did.

1. Make the reveal a fun little surprise

Alright, let’s start with an easy one!

Honestly, one of the best ways to give travel as a gift is simply by making the reveal a bit more exciting through packaging. These days, there are tons of fun options, from an adorable little premade suitcase box that comes with a passport scratch card to a cool explosion box you can fill with photos and on-theme details.

The cutest way to gift a surprise trip! This travel-themed set allows you to write down your destination and turn it into a scratchcard... all housed in a tiny suitcase.

Adorable Travel Surprise Scratch Card

Want a gift reveal with wow factor? Hide your travel surprise inside this explosion box (decorated with cute details about your destination) and watch their eyes light up.

Ever wished you could rig a scratch card to win...? Here's your chance! This clever product allows you to fill in a custom prize for a scratch card that looks otherwise like an average one you'd grab from the shops!

2. Get them a Tinggly Box

Looking for something even easier? A Tinggly Box can help with that. They offer thousands of unique experience gifts worldwide, all of which can come in a nice giftable box for a small extra fee. If you’re undecided on what experience to gift them exactly, they also have their classic boxes which include thousands of potential options. Perfect if you’re looking for an easy option!

The simplest way to gift experiences! This nifty gift box is filled with hundreds of potential travel experiences that the recipient can choose for themselves, taking the guesswork out of knowing what experience to buy. Until Feb 15: Use the code HAPPY20 for 20% off!

3. Gift them a mockup boarding pass

If you’re being the ultimate gift giver and surprising someone with a flight or full-on trip, then another cute idea would be to print out a mock boarding pass that announces all the details (or some vague details, if you don’t have the whole thing figured out yet).

There are a lot of great options for this these days. On the fancier end of the spectrum, there’s places you can get thick ones printed with elaborate gold leaf details, or if you wanna save some money (gifting flights isn’t cheap after all), then you can just use my free printable here.

For a classy keepsake that's ideal for gifting someone with a travel experience, look no further than these customizable boarding passes lined with gold details and beautiful design!

4. Hide the reveal in a fun card

If you want a way to gift travel that’s a bit more low-key, another easy idea is simply announcing the surprise in a card.

But as you can imagine, I’m not someone that simply does “normal cards”. I’d strongly suggest a cool travel-themed card, whether it’s a free one you print online (like the one below) or a cool one you buy. As usual, the more personal the better!

Definitely a more low-key option for gifting travel, but an adorable one nonetheless that makes a great keepsake. This pop-up card is perfect for revealing an experience gift - just write it inside the card alongside the opening suitcase.

5. Fake them out with a decoy gift

Admittedly, this one is kind of diabolical, but I do think it’s a fun idea. As an oft-diabolical person, this may be one of my favourite ways to gift travel.

The idea is simple: wrap up and gift them something MUCH less exciting than your travel/experience gift, then pull a switch and reveal your true gift after they’ve lowered their expectations.

Some ideas include…

  • A gift box with goodies from the place you’re travelling to, making them think THAT’S the whole gift when at the bottom there’s a boarding pass/trip announcement
  • Taking them out to dinner at a restaurant with the cuisine of your destination, saying it’s because they’ve always wanted to go, then surprising them with the fact that you ARE going in the future
  • Hide the voucher in a diversion safe and make them think you got them a crappy gift, like a can of corn or a lint roller

Hide your gift in this and watch the confusion unfold. BONUS: it serves a practical purpose after the ruse is done - it can be used to conceal valuables in a discrete way!

Can of Corn Diversion Safe

6. Reveal the answer to them in a puzzle

For an added element of suspense to the travel gift reveal, consider making them work for it by hiding the destination in a puzzle.

A lot of online makers these days sell cool customizable puzzles that you can get printed with your destination of choice.

For a lower-cost solution though, you can just print or write out the destination/surprise on a piece of paper, then cut it up in a few pieces and throw them in an envelope.

If you want to reveal your travel gift in the form of a puzzle, this done-for-you solution is the ideal choice if you're low on time and want impressive results.

Adorable Vacation Reveal Puzzle

7. Make a scavenger hunt that leads to the surprise

And on the note of “making them work for it”, you could even take things a step further and organize a full-on scavenger hunt before the grand reveal. This idea could be combined with some of the other options on this list, making a cool boarding pass or card the final prize after they solve all the clues …. or if you want to go full nerd with it, you could even hide the surprise in a Cryptex, and make them hunt for letters that spell out the key to opening it!

Conceal your surprise voucher, boarding pass, etc. in this Cryptex for optimal mystery points.

Cryptex with a Hidden Compartment

8. Gift them a guidebook… with a ticket as the bookmark

Or okay, maybe a more practical solution than a random Cryptex would be to gift them a guidebook or travel journal instead. Then, when they seem surprised by the gesture, you reveal there’s a bookmark in there too, with a gifty boarding pass or voucher in there acting as the bookmark. Genius.

9. Buy them something they’ll need for the trip

In a similar way, you could also buy them something useful and practical that they’ll need for your surprise trip/experience, from packing cubes to hanging toiletry bags … then when they thank you for the gift, casually mention that they’ll be needing them for their trip to _____.

Stuck on what to gift them for this practical decoy? My list of travel gifts might be able to help!

Eagle Creek Pack-It Original Packing Cubes Set

I adore packing cubes because they keep everything organized and can help you save space by squishing and condensing all your stuff. I've tested a bunch of the top brands and this set is my favourite.

10. Give them options to choose from

I’m stealing this idea on how to gift travel from my boyfriend, who has started gifting me with getaway options as my Christmas present each year, which I love because it makes me feel like I’m on a game show or something with different prize packages!

The idea is simple: pick 3 (or more) options for fun getaways or experiences you think they’d like, put them in fun envelopes (the more glam and dramatic the better) and then have them open each one and decide which of the options they’d like to choose.

This idea for gifting travel is most ideal if you want to make sure your experience/trip is 100% something they want, and also great if you’re indecisive and can’t commit to one particular getaway.

If you want an impressive way to dress up printed vouchers or a non-physical gift, these colourful and adorable ribbon-tied envelopes add the perfect touch of elegance and whimsy.

Adorable Ribbon-Tied Envelopes

11. Pair a Gift Card with an Itinerary/Recommendations

Lastly, I have a cute recommendation if you want to give the gift of travel or an experience, but don’t necessarily have the budget to pay for an entire trip or big activity.

Remember: not every travel experience gift needs to be a hot air balloon ride in Bora Bora.

Even something like a prepaid Visa for twenty bucks can be thoughtful if you dress it up with a card that has cafe recommendations for the next place they travel, or suggested things for them to spend it on.

Some ideas might include…

  • Recommendations for a cool cafe, restaurant, etc. to visit with your gift card (either based on personal experience or research)
  • A suggested mini-itinerary for a day in their trip
  • Give them options on things to spend it on (like a choice of detours on the Amazing Race)

I Hope You Enjoyed This Roundup of Ways to Give the Gift of Travel!

Let me know in the comments if you have more ideas to add to the list.

How to Give a Trip as a Gift (and have it be thrilling!)

Giving gifts of experience.

Giving experiences as gifts is widely accepted as a wonderful alternative to giving material objects. But have you ever wondered how to give a trip as a gift, and have it still be thrilling and fun to open?

trip wrap up

Make opening the gift an experience of it’s own.

One of the challenges with giving an trip as a gift is making it fun to actually open. Especially on holiday with big expectations, like Christmas morning, you want your kids to be over the moon about their presents, not confused why they only got this piece of paper saying they’re headed out of town.

With a little creativity you can make the gift opening an experience of it’s own. Think of the wrapping as a game or a puzzle. Some ideas for this are:

  • Wrap in multiple boxes and with different paper.
  • Make it a treasure hunt with clues.
  • Go big with a box filled with helium balloons or beach balls.
  • Fill a stocking with different items that give clues as to the location.
  • Wrap a piece of twine or yarn all around the room or house (or yard) that the recipient has to follow to get to the trip at the end.

You want the kids (or friend, spouse, partner) to think the actual opening of the gift is a fun, unique, and magical experience! That way, even if you aren’t leaving on the trip right away, the gift opening moment feels special.

Stick with a theme.

One of the easiest ways to give a trip as a gift is to give some accessories that one may need for the trip along with the announcement.

For example:

  • Wrap up a swimsuit and sunscreen for a trip to the beach.
  • Give some new snow gloves and a hat for a ski trip.
  • Buy a couple Disney tee shirts and mouse ears (for way less than you will at the park) and wrap them up to announce a trip to Disneyland.
  • Get some food or drinks from the region or city to announce the trip.
  • An instax mini camera is a great catch-all for a vacation gift opening, if you can’t think of anything else on theme!

Learn about the location.

Another fun way to give a trip as a gift is to give some guide books, movies, or other items that will teach the recipient about the location before you go.

It is always so much more fun to learn about a new place before you visit, and usually enhances the experience a lot. Planning to to some learning ahead of the trip can add so much to the fun of the gift!

If you aren’t leaving on the trip for a while, a fun way to accomplish this one is with a paper chain counting down to the trip date. You can add experiences or adventures that will help you learn about the trip each week until you leave, making your gift even more impactful and long-lasting.

Our Family Christmas

For Christmas last year, we gave the kids a trip to Italy–but the trip wasn’t until months later for Spring Break! We used all three of the above tips to make Christmas morning exciting for the kids (without buying any material gifts, as we were still finishing a year of not buying stu ff.)

Consumable Treats

First, we bought a few different Italian foods to pack up into different boxes. Then, we made a treasure hunt that began with the first gift box and a clue to the next one, and so on. The kids were so excited to follow each clue and unwrap each different little Italian treat. After the kids had run around the house finding the clues, they were led back to the Christmas tree where we had left a big box.

Inside the last box they found some Italian pasta and sauce for a big, authentic Italian meal, and a paper chain counting down the days until we would “GO TO ITALY AS A FAMILY!”

Paper Chain

The chain had one link for each day until we leave, with red links on Mondays. We had come up with a family activity to complete each Monday for family night that would teach us something new about Italy!

There are three weeks left until our trip, and so far we have: eaten Napoli style pizza, watched Italian opera, learned some Italian words, visited the Art Museum to look for Italian artists, celebrated Italian teams in the Olympics, made Italian Sodas, learned about Italian geography and watched a cartoon in Italian. We have yet to go driving to find Italian inspired architecture in our city, go get gelato, and learn about Italian fashion before we pack up to go.

Ongoing Experiences

The kids had an amazing Christmas morning opening their gift with a treasure hunt, clues, treats, and this cool paper chain. And we have also continued to benefit each week from the gift as we learn, play, and experience things together to prepare us for the trip that is still ahead!

I hope these ideas help you think of how to give a trip as a gift in a super fun way to someone you love. We’ll never regret the memories made!

Gifting a Surprise Vacation

The past few years my husband and I have been trying to focus more on experiences than things. If we had our way, we would give each other and our kids, vacations as gifts for every occasion. The best part about giving someone a surprise vacation is seeing their face when they realize where they’re going. The tough part though is finding a cute and fun way to give them that surprise trip because it’s hard to wrap the Eiffel Tower.

With Christmas coming up in about a month (I still can’t believe we are that close!), we wanted to help you out. We created these surprise vacation printables, just in case you are gifting a family vacation this year, or a surprise vacation with your spouse. You don’t have to limit this gift idea to Christmas. This would make a great birthday or anniversary gift as well! These templates are perfect for any trip you have in mind.

13 Creative Ways to Wrap an Experience Gift

in Family Culture , Parenting on 11/29/19

If you’re looking for a great alternative to more “stuff,” giving the gift of experience is the way to go! Not only will it prevent clutter, but it’s a fun way to bring wonder and adventure to the people you love. If you’re not sure where to start, here are 33 Experience Gifts for Kids & Families !

But how do you wrap an experience gift? Once you know what you want to give, you can use these creative ideas to make your experience gift as fun to open as a traditional gift!

This post contains affiliate links. That means I may earn a small commission on qualifying sales. I only recommend things I love and would actually use.

1. Give a Gift Certificate or Write Your Own Gift Coupon (use these free templates !)

Purchase a gift card or gift certificate for the experience and wrap it up! (restaurant, coffee shop, airline or hotel giftcard, spa gift certificate, Build-a-Bear, Movie Theater, etc.)

2. Purchase the actual tickets for the experience in advance and wrap them up like a traditional gift.

EXAMPLES: Movie Tickets, Sports game tickets, theater tickets, zoo passes, science center passes, etc.

3. Find a picture or logo that represents what you’re giving them and print it out.

  • Taking them to Build-a-Bear? Print out a photo of the Build a Bear logo and paste it on cardstock.
  • Sports game? Print out the team logo, write the date of the game you’re taking them to on it and wrap it up.

4. Buy a small item that represents your gift and wrap it up.

  • Zoo Membership? Wrap up a toy animal
  • Vacation? Wrap up a tiny airplane
  • Mani-Pedi or Spa Day? Wrap up a new nail polish

travel gift wrapped in a box

5. Give them the first installment of the gift.

  • Magazine subscription? Purchase a copy of the magazine and wrap it up.
  • Box subscription? Request a sample or have the first box shipped to you and give that.

6. Give them something they need in order to use your experience gift.

  • Ballet lessons? Give them a pair of ballet shoes in their size
  • Soccer Camp? Wrap up a new pair of cleats or a new ball
  • Lunch at a Tea Room? Purchase a pretty dress or fancy gloves
  • Waterpark? Try a new bathing suit or flip-flops
  • Cooking class? Give them a new apron or spatula
  • Vacation or weekend getaway?  Gift a carry-on suitcase or backpack for the adventure

7. Do a scavenger hunt.

Create a few simple clues about what your gift is and wrap up the first one. When they open it, it should lead them to the 2nd clue (hidden somewhere in the house), then a 3rd and 4th clue. The final one can be an envelope with the tickets or an item that represents the gift. Use the certificate templates below!

8. Give them a “kit” to create their own experience.

  • Art Box: Create a box filled with various arts & crafts items (paper, markers, stickers, pipe cleaners, pom-poms, glue, crayons, scissors, feathers, etc.)
  • Movie Night Box: Fill a basket with everything needed for an at-home movie night! (Popcorn, candy, bottled drinks, new PJ’s, and a DVD or an iTunes giftcard for a movie rental)
  • Camping Kit:  Stuff a duffel bag with camping items like a good flashlight , mess kit , canteen, matches, roasting sticks , first aid kit, rope or paracord, etc.
  • Pampering Gift Box: Fill a basket with a robe, face mask, bath bombs, nail polish, foot scrub, sparkling beverage, chocolate, etc.
  • Cooking Kit: Choose a theme (like Italian food) and fill a basket with uncooked pasta, tomato sauce, olive oil, wine, apron, etc.

gift basket

9. Do a creative photo to represent the gift.

  • Are you taking them on a special date? Take a photo of yourself with your arm around nobody and then edit the photo to indicate someone missing.
  • Download a photo at the experience location and photoshop in the person you’re giving the experience to, showing them at that location.
  • Snap a funny photo of yourself attempting to do the experience (like ballet dancing, karate, etc.)
  • Edit an image of a celebrity doing the experience and paste in the head of the person you’re giving the gift to.

[Remember to abide by copyright law for these, especially if you post them online.]

10. Send a video representing the gift.

  • Use your phone to record a quick video of you telling them what the gift is.
  • Take some footage of the place you’re taking them to and, at the end, add in text that says “Surprise! I’m taking you here!”
  • Find a video tour online and send it to the person

11. Try themed Packaging.

  • Waterpark or an island getaway? Write it out on paper and put your “message” in a bottle and wrap it up.
  • Baking Class? Have a local bakery write it on a cookie with icing.
  • Paint Night? Purchase a small, inexpensive canvas and write on it with sharpie.

message in a bottle

12. Solve the Puzzle.

Write what the experience gift is on the back of a puzzle with a sharpie, break up the puzzle, and give them the pieces to put together (fewer pieces are probably better).

13. Make a collage and have them guess.

Cut out some photos and words that represent your gift from magazines and create a collage (on paper with tape or glue, on a box using decoupage, or whatever you choose). Have the recipient guess what the gift is based on the collage! Or, have the tickets or gift certificate inside the box.

(This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience which means if you make a purchase after clicking a link I will earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Click  here  to read my full disclosure policy.)

How to Wrap an Experience Gift

Check out these simple, yet fun, ways you can “wrap” up an experience gift!

1. Just Wrap it Up!

If you are giving a gift certificate or coupon for an experience, then the easiest thing to do is just pop it in a box and wrap the box!

Two plane tickets are sticking up out of a white open gift box that has a red bow.

If you bought tickets to a show, concert, or for a trip, you can also put them in a box and wrap them up.

Or, you could take a picture of the experience or place (or find one online) and print it out and wrap that picture.

Or put the picture in a frame and wrap it.

If the tickets are to a special destination, get a photo album and put the tickets in the first page – then the recipient can fill the rest of the pages with photos from the experience!

3. Related Item(s) or Theme Wrapping

You can gift an item that is needed for or represents the experience.

For example:

  • Ballet lessons? Wrap up some ballet shoes.
  • A trip away? Give some luggage
  • A cooking class? Find a new cooking utensil they could use, or bake a cake with a special note about the class on top.
  • Gift certificate to eat out? Print out the menu or restaurant reviews and wrap them in the box with the gift card.
  • Museum membership – give an item related to the museum theme (i.e. science museum – chemistry kit ; airplane museum – model airplane )
  • Day at the spa? New nail polish
  • Swim lessons? New goggles

You could also choose several themed items related to the experience gift and put them in a gift basket :

  • Tickets to an aquarium? Tickets, marine animal books, and a movie about sea animals
  • Trip to science museum? Passes, chemistry set, related science book
  • Concert tickets? Tickets, latest CD album, band poster
  • Movie night? Popcorn, new PJs, snacks, cocoa, marshmallows

4. Wrap the First Item

If you are gifting a subscription or an experience gift with multiple parts, you can wrap the first part.

Box subscriptions are popular – you can wrap the first box with a note for how many more will come in the mail.

Magazine subscription – wrap the first edition.

Gifts of service are wonderful!

Try gifting housecleaning or a home renovation or repair gift.

If you can get the recipient out of the house, then put a big bow on the front door or the area of the home that will be repaired or renovated.

A video camera is sitting on the table.

Use a video camera to capture the event or experience and send a video of yourself telling them about the gift.

If you are visiting someone (like grandma and grandpa), have them send a video surprise telling about the visit and any special events planned.

Take a short video tour of the place and send it as a preview of the gift.

7. Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts are super fun for anyone!

You can hide clues around the house until the recipient finds the final one (which can be wrapped tickets or anything!).

Or, if the gift is a road-trip or vacation experience, then you can have a scavenger hunt using a map and each stop along the way will have a new clue to open or read.

8. Wrap a Map

You can wrap a map of the destination city with special spots highlighted or marked.

You can wrap a map of the theme park that you will be visiting and circle the best parts.

9. Travel Itinerary

Plan a trip for a gift experience and print out the travel itinerary!

Be creative and wrap it in a frame or print it on cardstock.

You can also put it in a scrapbook as the first page.

10. Gift a Kit

Let people create their own experiences by giving the experience gift in a “kit.”

For a movie night, get a basket and fill it with a new DVD, popcorn, PJs, cocoa.

Create a “craft box” – fill a basket with arts and crafts ( paper , oil pastels , markers , googly eyes , etc.)

Or, create a themed craft box with items relating to a specific type of art form – like wool felting or rock painting .

A variety of wrapping supplies are on the table - scissors, wrapping paper, confetti, small boxes.

There are so many different options for using photos for experience gifts.

Headed to a theme park? Photoshop the recipient into the experience (like riding the roller coaster at Disneyland).

Gifting ballet lessons? Take a photo of someone (yourself!) trying to do a ballet move.

Find a photo of someone doing the activity or experience and photoshop the head of the recipient onto this photo.

Put photos from the destination place into an album – one for each day of the trip or each activity/place that the recipient will encounter.

Create a photo collage poster of all the different parts of the experience gift.

Take a photo (like one of the ideas from #11) and create a puzzle out of it and wrap the puzzle.

You can make your own puzzle or have one made on Etsy .

How to Wrap An Experience Gift

Experience gifts are exciting! They offer the chance to try out new things or see new places. Make it extra special by wrapping it up in one of these unique ways!

How have you wrapped experience gifts? Which idea on this list is your favorite?

80 Epic Experience Gift Ideas and Creative Ways to Wrap Them Up

The ultimate guide to toy-free experience gift ideas that are clutter-free, super fun and make lasting memories! Plus creative ways to wrap experience gifts up!

2008 was a year that truly changed our family. In March we found out that our son had a tumor attached to his brain and one in his right arm. That year he was diagnosed with a disease called Osteoclastoma. In August our youngest daughter was born. She was very sick as well with what we would eventually come to know is Mitochondrial Disease and Primary Immune Deficiency. That Thanksgiving she spent her first holiday in the hospital.

I know that all sounds like a pretty depressing opener for an article that promises epic Christmas gift ideas but here’s the thing. All that tough stuff we went through gave us some deep perspective.

See that year we decided to focus on making as many memories as we can, whenever we can, for as long as we can. That was the year that we completely changed the way we do Christmas.

We took our kids that December to Orlando to see Disney World. It was magic in the middle of extremely trying times. It was the beginning for us in a shift from not just giving presents, but giving  PRESENCE.

Giving Presence

Think about your own childhood. With a few exceptions you probably don’t remember most of the toys or electronics you received that your parents probably spent a small fortune on. But I bet you can vividly remember the moments they spent with you.

Instead of buying your kids the latest expensive toy this year that will end up broken on their bedroom floor in two weeks, think about what memories you can create with them that they can hold to forever.  It’s always a choice of where we spend both our time and our resources, so choose wisely. Make an intentional decision to give them presence this year instead.

How you accomplish this can be as varied and exciting as the people on your list.  You can give an elaborate adventure package or something simpler closer to home but the focus is the same. Making memories. I’ll give you some ideas here and then I’ll share my favorite part; how we creatively come up with what to unwrap on Christmas morning. That’s right! Just because we focus on experience gifts doesn’t mean Christmas morning is any less exciting! It just takes a little thought and imagination!

Something to Think About:  Travel experience gifts can be particularly pricey, but to put it in perspective, you can add up what you were planning to spend on physical gifts for everyone in the family. You may find that the cost of a vacation isn’t too far off, especially if you plan a road trip to somewhere nearby or your trip is a staycation adventure with one night in a hotel. Remember that the gift of a vacation is something that your loved ones will remember for years, whereas the latest gadget or toy will quickly fade into the background and be forgotten. It’s just human nature!

What about relatives?

Our kids have generous grandparents and other relatives, who with good intentions, lovingly load up our kids with latest toys, gizmos and gadgets. Most of the time we are delighted to let them. The way we see it, they are more likely to appreciate those material gifts from Grandma and Grandpa if it’s NOT the 50 th item they’ve unwrapped on Christmas.

However, if someone asks us for ideas we either share something from this list or let them know that we’d like cash to pool together with other relatives. Last year we pooled money from grandparents, aunts and uncles and put it together to get SeaWorld and Busch Gardens passes to go along with the Universal Studios passes from us. We took FIVE trips this year with these collective passes including meeting up at the parks with our extended family.

We’ve found that most members of our family have been very receptive and enthusiastically gave their full support to gifting experiences. Especially when it involved spending time with them. It really is a win for everyone.  Because it has given us reasons to spend quality time together and it has become something my children look forward to each year.

Something to think about:  Experience gifts come with a BONUS! The gift of patience! Waiting for something and not getting instant gratification is an amazing life lesson. When you finally do your “experience gift”, think about how much more they’ll appreciate it!

What about santa.

You may be wondering how this experience gift business works with Santa. For a long time we simply had our experience gifts come from “Santa” but eventually we switched our main gifts to coming from Mom and Dad and Santa just bringing a few items instead. I highly suggest the  “Something to wear, something to read, something you want, something you need” model for this. My friend Miranda does an awesome job explaining it on her blog Miranda in Charlotte article “ You’re Doing Christmas All Wrong “.

Now that our kids are older and we have very happily moved away from Santa entirely we just stick with the experience gifts only and a stocking full of some fun small items. Let’s dig into how we go about making Christmas morning special unwrapping our experience gifts.

How to Wrap It Up

You all agree- this year you’re ready to forgo the toys and make it all about experiences for Christmas. However, you still want to put something under the tree. Me too! But how in the world do you wrap an experience into a neat little bow topped box? How do you actually  give a vacation? How do you wrap a class? Here are a few easy ideas:

  • If you have physical tickets or passes you can wrap them up. This is the easiest and most straightforward way to wrap up an experience gift.
  • Get printing! Type up your travel itinerary… and print it! Make a flyer with info about an outing or lesson or subscription…and print it! Create a gift certificate…and print it! I like to use Pic Monkey , a super easy photo and graphic editing site and then print using a heavy weight paper like card-stock . Then slide your printed creations into a festive envelope of wrap them in a big cardboard box to throw your loved ones for a loop.
  • Take it even further by getting creative with your packaging. Think outside the box, so to speak. Last year when we gifted our kids passes for Universal Studios, home of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter I found giant sized Ferrero Rocher chocolates , took off the outer foil, opened them and placed a note inside about the passes. Then I attached some wings made out of card-stock and….voila! A giant Golden Snitch that made for a magical reveal on Christmas morning.
  • If you will be traveling consider putting some photos from the destination and including these in your reveal. If you are going for more than one day you can wrap each day’s itinerary separately and reveal what you will be doing day by day. This is what we’ve done in the past with our kids and it can be very exciting.
  • You can even make the printing itself more exciting! I’ve used sites like Shutterfly to create a puzzle that our kids had to put together on Christmas morning. Once assembled it revealed their experience gift.
  • Try to think of the practical, purposeful things you will need that go with your experience gift and have your family unwrap those items as part of your reveal. Our kids have unwrapped suitcases that we needed for our trip and even bottles of sunscreen! You could buy goggles to go with swim lessons, some popcorn and candy for a movie night. The idea here is to get something useful for your experience and not just something that will add clutter to your life.
  • Create a Scavenger Hunt with clues. This is fun no matter how old your loved ones are! You can create clues and use maps. I’ve used AAA for Trip Ticks and incorporated these handy maps into our scavenger hunt revealing each clue as we reached a new point on the map.
  • Yet another year we ran yarn all over the house starting at the foot of our kid’s beds, zigzagging, up and down the stairs, and all over the furniture and ending tied to the tree with tickets on the end.

trip wrap up

Something to Think About: It’s really never too late late to start giving experience gifts. And if you’re kids are really young it’s the perfect tradition to start! Our kids no longer have the expectation of a mountain of toys on Christmas morning but they can’t wait to find out where they are going.

Hopefully, these ideas have sparked your imagination and made you think about giving meaningful memories with experience gifts sure to outlast any toy.

14 Ideas for Doing a Disney World Trip Reveal Surprise

14 Ideas on how to surprise someone with a Disney World trip reveal

So you’ve booked a trip to Disney World and now it’s time to share the news with your family! Do you want to do a special surprise Disney World trip reveal so that you can capture their reactions?

This is quite common with Disney World trips and they often make for some of the best videos. Who doesn’t love watching someone scream with joy or cry happy tears when they realize their dream trip is about to become a reality?

Here are some of my favourite ideas I have seen when doing a surprise Disney World trip reveal:

Mickey Balloons

This one works best if you are revealing the trip as part of a gift. It involves wrapping up a large box filled with some balloons, and some added magic is if the balloons are Mickey themed. When your family opens up the Disney World surprise box, the balloons will come flying out and you can include a message in the box (or attached to the string of the balloons) that says “You’re Going to Disney World!”

Scavenger Hunt

This one involves a bit more planning and preparation, but the result is super fun. You create a bunch of clues to lead them on a scavenger hunt and hide them throughout your house.

The kids often get so wrapped up in the fun of the game, that they don’t even realize that there may be a big surprise at the end. The treasure at the end is so worth it and will get some great reactions!

Reveal It When You Hit the Gates (Road Trip)

If you are driving to Disney World, then you can certainly pull this surprise off if your children are young. You tell them you are going somewhere else and then hit the road for Florida.

If they are young enough, they won’t pay attention to the road signs and will be unaware of where you are going. Once you are about to enter the Disney World property, now it is time to get them ready for your surprise trip reveal. Tell them to pay attention and look out the window. The Disney World gates are hard to miss and they’ll get pretty excited once they spot them.

Fake Airport Drop-Off

This surprise is for parents that are really good and covert at keeping secrets. You’ll need to keep the trip a secret from them until the last minute and also manage to pack all their stuff without them noticing. You disguise your trip to the airport as a drop-off for one of the parents for a business trip, but then you let them all in on the surprise!

Play a Fun Family Game

Jigsaw Puzzle

Do you have a kid or loved one that loves puzzles? Time to get creative and design a special puzzle made just for them! You can create your own design for your puzzle for free on Canva.com .

Once you have your image created with the message “You’re Going to Disney World!” on it, you can upload it to a puzzle making service. You could use a site such as  www.createjigsawpuzzles.com  or Vistaprint . Then, once you receive it, give it to the one you are surprising and watch them piece it together.

Advent Calendar Surprise

Are advent calendars a big hit in your house during the month of December? Why not make your own and customize the contents? Make a homemade advent calendar and provide the kids with little hints throughout the month leading up to Christmas. You can then have the big reveal inside the day of the 25th which will make for a fun Christmas morning!

Gift Them Their Magic Bands and Disney Goodies

trip wrap up

Early Morning Surprise

Give them a reason to jump out of bed! If you have an early morning departure, keep the secret up until the very last minute. Wake them up when it’s time to go with their bags all packed and ready to go.

They’ll wake up feeling like they are in a dream and you will surely have no trouble getting them out of bed once you let them know where you are going!

Mail Them a Letter

Kids love getting mail. What better way to surprise them with a letter from their favourite Mouse! Send them a letter and then have them open it and read it aloud. You can find a Disney World surprise letter template online like this one from mommytravels.net.

Disney Mad Libs

Mad libs are a fun game where you have to fill in the blanks of a story before you read it aloud. Here is an example of a printable you can use to announce your trip. Have your child give you some answers for the blank sections and then give the completed story to them to read.

Organize a Disney Breakfast

Trick Them!

There are so many ways you can trick your kids and surprise them with a Disney vacation, but I really like how this mom orchestrated this one:

Box in a Box in a Box in a Box…..

This one is great if the surprise is a birthday gift. Make them work for it and wrap up several boxes in to each other making them go through several layers until they get to the very end. You could make the reveal their MagicBand or perhaps a letter saying “You’re going to Disney World!”. It makes for a really fun game and the anticipation really builds up as they open each layer.

We have a tradition where we go out for Chinese on Christmas Day. I removed the fortunes in the cookies and replaced them with ones I made stating we were going to disney

I love that idea, that is great way to do a trip reveal! 🙂

We got plush Mickey and Minnie head easter baskets. We put in Disney shirts, their Magic bands, sunblock, a handheld fan/misting bottle, beach towels, goggles and Mickey shaped goldfish crackers. Gave them to our girls and asked them to figure out the surprise.

I love that, such a great idea!!!

Can I ask how you swapped the fortunes?

We have never surprised our kids with a trip to Disney, but we have surprised my best friends daughter(also my daughters best friend) and our kids that my friend and her daughter were going with us on our trip last summer. I made a video at MAgic Kingdom a couple months before her birthday and for her birthday showed the video to her and my kids to reveal that they were coming with us to Disney World. My kids knew about the trip but not that our friends were joining us. I’m planning to surprise them for our spring break trip this coming year. Hoping I can hold out until it time to wake them for the drive to the airport.

If you want to make a trip to Walt Disney World a little more magical, I suggest WDW Florist Service. When I took my sons for the first time, I ordered special gifts for them that were waiting in our room when we arrived with a special message from Mickey! Was it an extra expense? Yes. Was it worth every penny? You bet!

New York City Trip Wrap-Up

  • June 27, 2022
  • Recording Pioneers

1155 Broadway today

Even with all the adventures I had in NYC, as described in the previous three articles, there are still a few things I have not yet mentioned. I did plenty of more historical sightseeing that wasn’t entirely related to the Hager family. Any historian should be overwhelmed by the amount of history surrounding them while in New York, and even though this wasn’t my first time there, it was just as exciting as the first time nearly three years ago.

One of the most anticipated places I wanted to see was 1155 Broadway. This was one of the several New York addresses for the Columbia phonograph company. Columbia moved their headquarters from Washington DC to this Broadway address at the end of 1896, and it really took off from there. It was at this building that took up four addresses that many of the early acoustic records collectors look for today were made. This four-story lab was used between 1897 and approximately 1904. This building was significant in its location, being right in the middle of Tin Pan Alley, allowing for popular songs to come right from the source, before other labs elsewhere. Many thousands of popular discs and cylinders were made there, along with all the intrigue and drama that went on within Columbia in the late 1890s and very early 1900s.

Hot Jazz Jubile

With all this in mind, I made sure to walk by old 1155 several times while I was there. This time Shane Fleming and I got a more unique look at the building, being able to peer inside for the first time. Last time I was there I didn’t get to see what the inside looked like. It’s not very interesting, but there are a few things that remain as a silhouette of its colorful past. The overall construction of this massive building looks somewhat similar, with the old staircase in the same spot, and the brick walls remaining bare. Even with these still the same, the building looks very little like it used to. That anything remains from its past is remarkable. Perhaps one day a few of us historians can make our way into the basement, as that is where all the copying of records was done, and where a lot of the drama likely occurred. Maybe some treasures remain there.

Of course a promenade around Tin Pan Alley wouldn’t be complete without going by the famous blocks of 27th and 28th streets. Columbia’s famous lab was right on the corner of this historic block of 27th street, but the more famous block of Tin Pan Alley remains on 28th. This block has recently been designated as a historic landmark, something quite long overdue. There really isn’t anything quite like exploring the fully intact and nearly untouched row of buildings where thousands of classic songs were published. Even though many famous publishers like Witmark, Irving Berlin, Joseph Stern, and other, smaller publishers like Justin Ring also set up on this block.

This block was infamously one where some of New York’s most scandalous vices were commonly exchanged. Right across the street from these famous music houses were brothels, Turkish baths, drug dens, and saloons. Directly across the street from where Ring and Fred Hager set up their publishing firm was a famous brothel. How vibrant the block must have been when shows closed for the night, and all the musicians would flock to these entertainments. Even the paint and wooden structures of these buildings remain, and as I made my way up to a few of them, I made sure to rub my fingers on the old materials. What a joy it is to stand where other great musicians have stood.

UpBeat Records

After we spent some time on 28th, Shane and I made our way to a building that wouldn’t seem significant to most, but to me is quite interesting. He had special access to a building now at 1181 Broadway. This address was built in 1895, and in 1897 housed the New York office for Will Rossiter, a Chicago based publisher. It was here where Fred Hylands got his first pieces published in New York. This building is very well intact, but of course with intactness comes great old filth. Crusty wooden rails, art nouveau motifs, and dusty stairs, all of its old charm remains.

A railing at 1181 Broadway

How wonderful it was to imagine Fred Hylands begrudgingly trodding up these stairs, grasping the same rails, scuffing his long boots, holding his first prospect into the safari that was Tin Pan Alley. He had just moved to the big city in late 1896, and was likely not aware that he would be making records in just a few months, that soon his accompaniment would become unknowingly immortal. We did this historical strolling around right before heading over to Colin Hancock’s to make disc records.

After the whirlwind of making disc records and spending several hilarious hours with Jerron Paxton, I had an interesting time getting back to where I was staying. What fun it was for me, a Californian, trying to figure out the subway after 11 at night. Anyone who has taken the subway at least a few times knows that the weekends are the time when repairs are made, so the schedule is often thrown out of order. I took the subway everywhere on this trip, so after becoming quite familiar with it, this hour trip back to where I was staying was quite some fun.

trip wrap up

I was staying on West 49th street, just a few blocks from Times Square. My original plan of getting off at 42nd street was thwarted by a train that was stuck at that station, so at nearly midnight, I was forced to get out and walk through Times Square. By then I had been through there many times, but it never seems to get old, thinking of all the history associated with it, juxtaposed with all the bright lights and modern notions of it. At one time Fred Hylands set up one of his many publishing firms there, long before it became so blindingly bright. This didn’t last long of course, but it was one of many publishers that used to be set up in Times Square.

The next day I had a few hours to kill, so I decided to head back to my favorite part of the city, the Lower East side. In a previous article I spoke of going out to the building where Frank P. Banta was born, and this was the morning I did that, but before heading out to Greenwich village, I looked for another historic address. In the 1890s, the Lower East side was infamous for its countless bars, cheap theaters, strange people, and accessibility to vices.

WTJP

Just one of many contributors to this world immortalized in the 1892 song “The Bowery,” was Russell Hunting. Although he didn’t originally set up his base of operations there, he soon moved it to a small off-street called Clinton. Hunting became famous throughout New York for being the procurer of much of the city’s smut on cylinder records. In the early 1890s, coin arcades were popping up “like mushrooms” it was said, and many of these establishments kept off color selections in their coin phonographs. Hunting attempted to corner this market, as arcade owners and the public couldn’t seem to get enough of them. Although he communicated often in code, and used as many as a dozen pseudonyms, his base of operations remained 45 Clinton street.

This building is still very much intact. Although I didn’t get to go inside, it was remarkable to see it. It was within those walls that thousands of taboo recordings and photographs were exchanged (Hunting’s assistant, Charlie Carson was a photographer, and most of his photographs were destroyed along with the records), and where Hunting’s famous arrest took place in 1896. This was truly a remarkable thing to see for me, as I have, for years, found the intrigue of Hunting and Charlie Carson’s story the most fascinating. It is because of characters like them that we think of the Lower East side in such the way that we do now.

And I think that’s a wrap folks! This was truly an extraordinary trip, and I cannot thank my friends enough for their kind hospitality and welcoming nature to a quirky Californian like me. Thanks so much to Don Gray Seubert, Brian Nalepka, Ken Bloom, Charlie and Lauren , Neal Siegal , Colin Hancock , and Shane Fleming.

Nauck

Soon I will be back there soon to find and see more. Even with all that I did this trip, there is still much more to be done.

R. S. Baker has appeared at several Ragtime festivals as a pianist and lecturer. Her particular interest lies in the brown wax cylinder era of the recording industry, and in the study of the earliest studio pianists, such as Fred Hylands, Frank P. Banta, and Frederick W. Hager.

Best travel wrap: A woman wears a gray travel wrap in a field

We've all been there: You're midway through your flight or sitting in an  your office  and counting down the minutes until you arrive (or get to go home) because you're so cold, you can't stand the thought of being there for one more second. There's nothing you want more than  a blanket  to snuggle up in. Unfortunately, it's not always the most socially acceptable—or space efficient—option. That’s where the best travel wrap comes in. These soft, oversized pieces of fabric can be worn as scarves, wrapped around your shoulders, worn as a headscarf or unfurled into a small lap blanket for full body warmth. Stylish and ingenious!

Best Minimalistic Wrap

Loft travel wrap, what to look for in a travel wrap.

Travel wraps are essentially extra-large scarves, and size is one of the greatest considerations you'll have when choosing a travel wrap. A good size is about 70 inches long and 30 inches wide, so it can stretch over most of your body.

You'll also want to pay attention to material. There are several fabrics that will be both cozy and warm without feeling too bulky, making them ideal for travel wraps. We've outlined a few of the most popular options below.

  • Cashmere:  Derived from Kashmir goats , these soft fibers are washed and then spun into yarn to create plush wraps. Loved for its soft warmth, ability to wick moisture and breathability, cashmere is guaranteed to keep you cozy on a long travel day. It does require a higher upkeep, however, as it's recommended to be dry cleaned or hand-washed due to its fine nature. We also suggest looking for manufacturers who  practice more animal-friendly shearing techniques .
  • Wool:  Made  primarily from sheep's fur , wool is known to be some of the warmest fabric around. (Read: When that airplane air conditioner hits, a wool wrap will keep you nice and toasty.) It's hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for those with sensitivities, and it's mildew- and mold-resistant (wool can reportedly soak up to  as much as 30 percent  of its weight in water), meaning even if you spill a bit of liquid on it, it won't get super gross in your suitcase. You shouldn't put your wool in the dryer to avoid shrinking.
  • Polyester:  A synthetic fiber  made from a type of plastic , this ultra-durable material is moisture-wicking and ultra weather-resistant. It's also highly wrinkle-resistant, so it won't look like junk no matter how badly you smush it up under you in the back of the car.
  • Acrylic : Acrylic is a  synthetic alternative  to wool that is just as snuggly and dependable. It's highly resistant to UV fading, which means the dye will stay vibrant for longer, though it's not the most eco-friendly option around. Acrylic fibers also tend to stretch with heat, so never wash your scarf in hot water.
  • Cotton:  Classic and easy, cotton is a staple for its durability, breathability and light breeziness. It's also another great option  if you have allergies  to any other fabrics.
  • Silk:  If you want to add a but of luxe to your ensemble, silk is not only beautiful, but is a  natural protein fiber  obtained from the mulberry silkworm that's extremely strong and helps to regulate your temperature. It's lightweight, breathable and dries quickly, and it will feel nice against your skin, which can improve relaxation and sleep for some—perfect for any long journey ahead.
  • Microfiber :  Made from synthetic fibers , such as polyamide (a nylon byproduct) and polyester, this elastic fabric will be super soft, since it has very small thread diameters. Beyond that, it's long-lasting and super lightweight, which is ideal if you're strictly a  carry-on  only person. The one downside? These fibers easily attract dirt and grime like a magnet.

How to Style a Travel Wrap

The best part of a travel wrap is its versatility. Since it can be worn in so many ways, you can literally style it with just about anything. Going poncho-style? Try it over a loose top or blouse and let it serve as your top layer. (Pro tip: Wear it with shawl pins or shawl buckle clasp so it won’t fall down.) If you're throwing it on as a  scarf , a bulkier sweater and jeans will be fine, since it will sit neatly on top. When worn as a blanket, you can throw it over anything from a suit dress to a pair of  sweats .

We’ve rounded up the best travel wraps you can buy based on material, shape and overall coziness below.

Bears Wrap Up Road Trip At USC

BERKELEY  – The California baseball team wraps up its season-long seven-game road trip this weekend when it travels to Southern California for a three-game series against USC. All three games will be played at Great Park in Irvine, and will be live streamed.   Cal (26-16, 12-12 Pac-12) wrapped up an impressive April with an overall record of 11-6, including a 7-5 mark in conference play. The Golden Bears are 2-2 in their current road trip after defeating Stanford 7-4 in the series finale last Sunday on the Farm.   USC (21-23, 11-9) is coming off a series loss at the hands of Arizona State in Tempe last weekend. The Trojans took the finale in convincing fashion, 11-6, scoring six runs early. The Trojans are 12-8 at home this year – which  has been all over the Los Angeles area, as USC is remodeling Dedeaux Field this season.   HOW TO FOLLOW

  • Sunday, May 5, 12 p.m.: USC Live Stream | CalBears.com

  QUICK HITS

  • Cal is 2-2 on the current road trip and 8-7 on the road overall. The Bears are hitting .312 and averaging 8.1 runs per game on the road. Jarren Advincula leads the team with a .391 average (25 for 64) in road games. Cal has turned to Andres Galan (0.96 ERA), Tyler Stasiowski (2.16), Austin Turkington (2.45) and Oliver Boone (2.57) – all of which have an ERA under 3.00 in road games – as regular pitchers.
  • The Bears had three of the Pac-12's hottest hitters during the month of April. Peyton Schulze and Jarren Advincula both ranked in the conference's top 15 of batting average, with Rodney Green Jr. just outside the top 15. Schulze led the team with a .378 average, while Advincula hit .370. Green Jr. saw his overall batting average climb to .260 after hitting .322 in April.
  • The Bears' three-game sweep over then No. 5-ranked Oregon State continues to be a bright spot. Through April 30th, Cal's 5-2 mark against Quad 1 of the latest RPI tops the Pac-12. Only Arizona (5-7) and USC (5-6) have as many wins against Quad 1 opponents as the Bears.
  • The Bears are 11-14 against teams in the top 100 of the RPI and have a chance to reach .500 this weekend when they face USC, which is ranked 93 in the latest RPI.
  • Freshman pitcher Trey Newmann extended his impressive run with a win over Stanford last Sunday. Newmann is 3-0 over his last three appearances with wins over Washington State, Oregon State and Stanford. • Advincula is three hits shy of cracking Cal's top 10 for hits in a single season by a freshman. Tenth is currently held by Lance Blakenship and Jeff Kobermus, with 60.
  • Moutzouridis is second on the team with 17 mulit-hit games – he has 11 2-hit games and six 3-hit games.
  • Advincula has struck out just 14 times this season. He leads the Pac-12 and is 24th in the nation as the toughest player to strikeout, doing so only every 11.6 at bats.
  • 2023 – 85 -second
  • 2019 – 81 – third
  • 2022 – 75 – tied for fifth
  • 2024 – 65 – tied for 10th

  SERIES HISTORY

  • Friday will be the 396th time the Bears and Trojans have squared off. The series dates back to 1923 with USC owning a 238-154-2 advantage. USC took two of three from the Bears last season on a rainy weekend at Stu Gordon Stadium. After Cal won game two, 8-7, in 10 innings, the Trojans took the rubber match, 6-3. Connor Sullivan took the rubber-match loss despite tossing 5.1 strong innings, while Max Handron went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

  UP NEXT

  • The Bears wrap up the 2024 regular season with a season-long seven-game home stand, beginning with a three-game nonconference series against South Bay rival San Jose State that starts on May 10 at 6:05 p.m. All three games against the Spartans will be televised on Pac-12 Bay Area.

Trip wrap-up, home tomorrow.

Location: Rayburn Park COE Campground; Pineland, Texas

Tomorrow is moving day and I'll only have about 100 miles of towing before getting back the Heart of Haynesville RV Park in Mansfield, Louisiana which I have recently been using as my home-base. I'm still doing some extra weather watching because rains are predicted to begin at 1:00 pm tomorrow and last for 3 days. My plan is to empty my tanks at the dump station and then pull out around 9:00 to arrive around 11:00. I'll be setting up in the same campsite that I left from a week ago. I put markers out so I can hopefully put Liberty back in the exact same spot. The location was perfectly level so I could put my boards under all of the wheels to avoid the tires resting on gravel for a long time. We will see.

The original purpose of this short, one week trip was to escape the cold weather. That was a success. Although it got down into the low 20's a few nights, the day before and after was well above freezing so there was very little worry about anything freezing up. The cooler temperatures had a positive effect on the trip. The temperatures for tomorrow morning are predicted to be 47, all good.

Although I hadn't planned on it, a secondary purpose became available. It was to deal with some memory demons that had started playing with my mind at the end of last year. This purpose only materialized when the memory demons unexpectedly ran away the instant I saw the Gulf of Mexico. That sort of surprised me but also made me aware of the chance it gave me to put them away in a more secure location. This secondary purpose was also a success, especially at my current campground.

This COE campground has been almost perfect for what I needed. It is isolated, so no explorations were planned. The weather was chilly but warm enough for daily walks. There have only been a couple of other campers in the campground. The campground is eerily quiet due to the cooler weather and the other campers remaining inside. The sunsets were reliable. It was just a great, kick back, relax and thinking campground. I'll definitely be back because it is full of good vibes.

Ya'll take care of each other. Maybe, I'll Cya down the road.

Nice pictures and safe travels.

Glad to see you traveling again. We traveled in part of that area last spring. Looks like you may be staying at Toad Suck. FYI this is the only Corps park we have stayed at which doesn't separate the public day use and the camping areas. We had a group having some type of celebration on our site when we arrived. The park host didn't want to do anything and when he finally showed up, he gave them permission to continue right behind me so they unplugged their music from my site and plugged in at the next site!! They were there for hours and walked back and forth across our site close enough to touch our door. We saw people at the boat ramp at all hours and they would use unoccupied sites to clean and refill their catch buckets. If in the area again we will stay at the Petit Jean State Park, this is worth your time to visit even if you don't camp there. Sorry for the long post, enjoy your trip.

Thanks for information Anon. I'll be at Toad Suck on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Hopefully the event you described happens mostly on weekends, but I'll be on guard. I explored Petit Jean a couple years ago. It was nice. If you're traveling, be safe out there.

Rays wrap up miserable road trip with another quiet loss to Brewers

MILWAUKEE — Debuting the City Connect uniforms on Friday should work out well for the Rays.

Because they way they’re playing, they could use a new identity.

Wednesday’s 7-1 loss to the Brewers capped a miserable 1-5 road trip in which they were swept by a White Sox team that started the series with a majors-low three wins and then lost two of three to the Brewers, scoring four runs total.

“Pretty rough,” said 10th-year manager Kevin Cash. “Maybe one of the rougher ones that I can recall. We just didn’t do many things very well. We didn’t necessarily beat ourselves. We just got beat — outplayed, outperformed in really every aspect.”

The Rays have lost eight of their last 10 games and headed home in last place in the American League East with a 14-18 record. It is the first time they’ve been four or more games under .500 since the 2018 season.

“Since I’ve been here, I don’t think we’ve been (on) such a negative streak like we have,” Yandy Diaz , a Ray since 2019, said via team interpreter Manny Navarro. “We’re trying to do things better, but it doesn’t seem like things are coming our way. Little by little, hopefully.”

As has been the case during much of their rough opening month, the Rays struggled to produce much offense.

Wednesday was among their low points, an eighth-inning, run-scoring wild pitch the only thing that kept them from being shut out for the first time.

“It’s tough,” said outfielder Richie Palacios , one of the few Rays who is hitting right now. “We’ve just got to play better baseball, all facets of the game. We’ve just got to come together and produce. I know we’re trying hard, obviously. Some times we try too hard. But we try to go out there and play a better brand of baseball as a total.”

They didn’t make much contact, and most of what they did was soft, with only four balls, all outs, clocked in excess of 100 mph. Their five hits were all singles — two of which didn’t leave the infield — and they got only four runners past second base. They were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine on.

“We’re just not getting it done,” Cash said. “We’ve got to do a little bit better job of that. Some good at-bats early, but that big hit is really tough to come by right now to put some runs on the board and keep us in games.”

In the three games against the Brewers — a 1-0 win and losses of 8-2 and 7-1 — 15 of their 16 hits were singles. (The other was Jose Siri’s homer Tuesday that eventually led to a brawl and multiple suspensions .)

“You’ve got to find ways to put a ball in the gap, knock it out of the ballpark. Got to get some walks,” Cash said. “These guys, they’re wearing it right now. They feel it. And they’re frustrated by it. We’ve just got to stay at it.”

While Cash said the Brewers pitchers deserve some credit, “there’s no denying our approaches are not very good right now, not solid. We’ve got to kind of put our heads together to collectively make an adjustment as an offense, as as a team right now. We’ve just got to do a better job.”

There are some things they could try, such as shuffling a lineup that still includes .211-hitting Diaz and .139-hitting Randy Arozarena in the top four. But their options are somewhat limited until they start (maybe by next week) getting back some of their injured players, such as Josh Lowe , Jonathan Aranda and Jonny DeLuca .

“Potentially, we’re thinking through those things all the time,” Cash said. “You can mix up the lineup. You still in theory want your best hitters to get as many at-bats as possible. So, that’s why you rush them to the front of the lineup.”

Zach Eflin gave the Rays a solid start, allowing three runs (including a solo homer by ex-Ray Willy Adames ) while working into the sixth. But as bad as the offense has been, there is not much room for error. The Brewers added four, including a three-run blast by Adames, off reliever Erasmo Ramirez .

“It’s been a difficult month, I’d say, on all sides of the ball,” Eflin said. “I wouldn’t single (the hitters) out by any means. We’ve just got to do a better job of playing together.”

Bears Wrap Up Road Trip At USC

Cal Looks To Continue Climb In Pac-12 Standings

  • Friday, May 3, 6:30 p.m.: USC Live Stream | CalBears.com
  • Saturday, May 4, 2 p.m.: USC Live Stream | CalBears.com
  • Sunday, May 5, 12 p.m.: USC Live Stream | CalBears.com
During that stretch he has a 4.02 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched, he has struck out 23 to just four walks and has held opponents to a .193 average.
He leads the Pac-12 and is 24 th in the nation as the toughest player to strikeout, doing so only every 11.6 at bats.
  • 2023 – 85 -second
  • 2019 – 81 – third
  • 2022 – 75 – tied for fifth
  • 2024 – 65 – tied for 10 th
  • Friday will be the 396th time the Bears and Trojans have squared off. The series dates back to 1923 with USC owning a 238-154-2 advantage. USC took two of three from the Bears last season on a rainy weekend at Stu Gordon Stadium. After Cal won game two, 8-7, in 10 innings, the Trojans took the rubber match, 6-3. Connor Sullivan took the rubber-match loss despite tossing 5.1 strong innings, while Max Handron went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Baseball Eagles Wrap Up Road Trip at Bellarmine on Tuesday

4/29/2024 3:00:00 PM

  • Morehead State (25-19, 10-8 OVC)
  • Bellarmine (7-36, 6-15 ASUN)
  • Morehead State (7-3) W2
  • Bellarmine (2-8) W1
  • Tuesday's game marks just the fourth meeting all-time between the Eagles & Knights.
  • Morehead State is 2-1 in the first three meetings.
  • MSU defeated Bellarmine 13-2 in the first of the home-and-home this year 13-2.
  • Morehead State has bludgeoned opposing teams with a high-powered offense this season. As a team, the Eagles rank among the nation's best in batting average (.324, 5th), doubles (100, T-18th), hits (508, 4th), home runs (96, 5th), runs (419, 5th), scoring (9.5, 9th), and slugging percentage (.577, 7th).
  • For the third straight season, Morehead State has four players with 10 or more home runs. Roman Kuntz and Ryley Preece are once again on that list for the third straight season, while Colton Becker and Isaias Guzman have both hit 10+ homers for the first time in their careers.
  • Roman Kuntz is running away with the OVC home run title, and holds a large lead in RBI as well. Kuntz has 22 HR (T-5th in DI) and 67 RBI (5th in DI) this season. He is just five home runs shy of tying both the Morehead State & OVC record for home runs in a season, held by former Eagle Niko Hulsizer (27, 2017). He currently ranks 10th on the OVC single season HR list.
  • Kuntz is also chasing Hulsizer down for the Morehead State single season RBI record of 82. Kuntz is 19 RBI short of tying the OVC's single season record of 86, set by Wes Cunningham of Murray State in 2010.
  • Ryley Preece has scored 70 runs this year, leading the OVC by 16. He ranks second in DI in runs scored. Preece is tied for the OVC lead in hits with 70, and ranks among the leaders in batting average at .389 this season.
  • Despite missing a pair of games earlier in the season, Colton Becker leads the OVC in stolen bases with 20 this season. He is tied for the lead in doubles with 18 (a career-best), and hit his 10th home runs of the season vs. SEMO this past weekend (a career-high). Becker was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch list for the second straight season last week.
  • Davis Germann tied the program record for walks in a game on Saturday vs. SEMO, drawing five bases on balls.
  • Isaias Guzman snapped a streak of four straight games with a home run on Sunday, but blasted three home runs in the SEMO series including two on Friday night and a grand slam on Saturday.

Braves in Late Window for First Time in 2024 As They Head to Seattle to Take on Mariners

The Atlanta Braves will be the last game to get started on Monday night; here's the lineups and how to watch.

  • Author: Lindsay Crosby

The Atlanta Braves have been on a roll.

They won in extra innings over the Cleveland Guardians last night to wrap up a dominant homestand, going 7-2 with seven quality starts from their rotation in the nine games.

Atlanta’s starting a West Coast road trip tonight with Max Fried taking the mound in T-Mobile Park against the Seattle Mariners and starter Bryce Miller .

Lineups for the Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners on Monday, April 29th

Here's how Atlanta will line up for the contest:

RF Ronald Acuña Jr 2B Ozzie Albies 3B Austin Riley 1B Matt Olson DH Marcell Ozuna SS Orlando Arcia CF Michael Harris II C Travis d’Arnaud LF Jarred Kelenic

Fried’s coming off of one of the best starts of his career against the Miami Marlins - a complete game shutout in just 92 pitches with only three hits and no walks allowed. Fried’s faced the Mariners just once in his career, a start in September of 2022, and took the hard-luck loss after six innings of two-run baseball, both coming on solo shots. One of those two Mariners to take him deep that day, Sam Haggerty, is still on the Seattle roster and represents the only homers or RBIs off of Fried by a member of the team.

Here's the Mariners lineup:

CF Julio Rodríguez RF Mitch Haniger 2B Jorge Polanco DH Mitch Garver C Cal Raleigh 1B Ty France SS Dylan Moore 3B Luis Urias LF Sam Haggerty

Bryce Miller’s having a superb season for the Mariners - he’s only 3-2, but it’s not his fault, as he’s put up a 2.22 ERA in those five starts. He’s faced Atlanta exactly once in his young career and it went okay , allowing three runs on four hits in 6.1 innings of a loss last May in Truist Park. No current Braves player has more than three at-bats or one hit off of Miller, and only Matt Olson has recorded an RBI.

How to Watch the Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners on Monday, April 29th

Today's series opener is scheduled for a 9:40 PM ET first pitch. Atlanta’s broadcast is on Bally Sports South, while the Mariners broadcast is on ROOT NW. For those out of market, both are available on MLB.tv.

If you’d rather just listen, the Mariners radio broadcast is available on KIRO 710 AM, while the Atlanta Braves Radio Network has the standard broadcast on 680 AM/93.7 FM The Fan and affiliates across Braves Country.
