ACCESSIBILITY LIMITATIONS AT FORT SUMTER Visitors must use a flight of steps to travel between the boat and the Fort due to rehabilitation work on the Fort Sumter Dock. There is no ramp. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Fort Sumter Tours is the only authorized concessioner for the National Park Service and actually docks at Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter Tours offers year round trips to Fort Sumter that departs daily from Liberty Square in Charleston (340 Concord Street) and Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant (40 Patriots Point Rd). On the ferry ride to and from the fort, visitors will enjoy spectacular views of Charleston’s famous Battery with its antebellum mansions, the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge, Castle Pinckney, the USS Yorktown, dolphins and more.

If you're on the fence, buy it!

Initially, I had some amount of distrust ordering on line. Worried that tickets would not come through, etc. Mathematically pre calculated if TourPass could offer savings compared to purchasing admission tickets individually. TourPass certainly did! To get the most out of our day, I planned an aggressive itinerary. We even brought sandwiches for lunch, so as not to waste a minute. We were able to get in 6 standard tours and one featured! Our second featured tour on Red Boat was cancelled. TourPass promptly refunded this amount on my credit card. No hassle, no worries! We did the1 day St Augustine pass. The featured Trolley Tour was outstanding, as were standard tours The Oldest Store and Jail. If I ever get to Savanah or Charleston will definitely go with TourPass. They did a great job of covering St Augustine’s highlights. Their app was user friendly and showed proximity of nearby attractions, saving steps and time. Everything was so easy. I purchased the Savannah tour pass for 3 days, I did not use them consecutively, as I was on town for 8 days. I chose to do the Hop on Hop off Tour on my first day to give me an overview of Savannah, I rode the trolleys for a total of two loops, guide offered a different perspective on the city. I took a walking tour, Brad was awesome, 1.5 hrs of wonderful history. I rode the Paddle boat, was a bit disappointed the wheel doesn't function. I also visited Fort Pulaski on my last day in Savannah, it was a wonderful experience. Those were the 4 featured options I used. I also used multiple options from the normal options, my 2 favorites were the Square Pops and the Jepsen Art Center. I cannot express how awesome it was to be able to enter a venue, have it paid for, and just enjoy. I will purchase the Savannah Pass when I return next year, it was well worth it's value. Now I am hopeful the Charleston, SC Pass, that it is just as terrific, as I am visiting in the Fall.

Fort Sumter Tours | How To Get There

TOURS OF FORT SUMTER 

Tours on Fort Sumter are very limited. Fort Sumter Tours , a local tour company, is the only authorized National Park Service concessioner of Fort Sumter.

They offer 1 - 3 tours per day, depending on the time of year.

The tours include a 30-minute ferry ride to and from the fort and 60 minutes self-guided tour of the island. The total length of the tour is just under 2.5 hours.

During the 30-minute boat ride out to the island, a pre-recorded voice discusses various points of interest, including the history of Fort Sumter and Charleston Harbor. 

Since you won't be allowed to bring your own snacks with you there is a snack bar available onboard the ferry.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a National Park Service Rangers who provides a 10-minute overview of the island. Guests are then given 45-60 minutes to explore the fort and the museum on their own.

There is no guided tour around Fort Sumter. However, signs label different points of interest, and if interested, the Fort Sumter Tours can arrange a guided tour through the museum for an additional cost.

The tour is a nice complement for those planning a trip out to the island. It details the historic Fort Sumter Battle, as well as many other sites around Charleston that were significant during the Civil War. 

FERRY DEPARTURE LOCATIONS

Fort Sumter is on an island and is only accessible by boat. Tours have ferries that leave from Liberty Square and Patriots Point in Charleston.

It is suggested that guests book reservations in advance. Again, Fort Sumter Tours is the only authorized concessioner of Fort Sumter that actually docks at the Fort.

At Liberty Square, you can find the Fort Sumter Visitor Center. The building and exhibits inside are free to enjoy. Restrooms and a water bottle fill station are available for your convenience.

If you are coming from the city center to Liberty Square , head east on Calhoun Street, then turn right onto East Bay Street. Continue straight on East Bay Street until you reach Liberty Square at the intersection of Concord Street and Adger's Wharf.

And if you want to head to Patriots Point , head east on Calhoun Street, then turn left onto East Bay Street. Continue straight on East Bay Street until you reach the intersection with Morrison Drive. Turn right onto Morrison Drive and follow it until you reach Patriots Point on the right side.

TICKET COST/SCHEDULE

There is no charge for visiting Fort Sumter, the museum, or Exhibit Hall in Charleston. However, there is a fee for transportation to and from the island.

Departure times depend on the time of year, the departure point, and the weather.

Located at Patriot's Point, the USS Yorktown is an aircraft carrier developed for the United States during WWII. The craft was named after the Battle of Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War.

Tour description.

An authorized National Park Service concessioner. We provide the only commercial boat transportation to Fort Sumter. We offer many departure times daily from two convenient locations, Liberty Square, downtown Charleston, or Patriots Point, in Mt. Pleasant.

Once aboard, you will experience a relaxing 30 minute narrated cruise to historic Fort Sumter. You will learn about the events which led to the outbreak of America’s most bloody war. When you arrive you will be greeted by National Park Service Rangers, who will provide further details about Fort Sumter and its pivotal role in the American Civil War. On the fort you will find a souvenir shop. After your roughly one hour visit, you will enjoy a scenic cruise back to your departure point.

Please note: the 3:30pm departure from Patriots Point will make a brief interim stop at Liberty Square before and after the Fort Tour.

Al Visitors are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines with regards to COVID.

Historic City Tour

Enhance your Fort Sumter Tour with a 90-minute guided bus tour around downtown Charleston. Experience the Market area, historic homes and churches and step onto the famous Battery seawall. Your Fort Sumter Tour and city tour may be done on the same day or different days.

This combo is booked through Gray Line Charleston.  You will need to go directly to 375 Meeting Street to start the City Tour first.  Transportation is provided to Fort Sumter Visitor Center directly following your City Tour to catch the boat.  You will receive a voucher from the driver at the time of drop off to Fort Sumter.  Any questions regarding this combo, please call 843-722-4444.

USS Yorktown

This is the ultimate patriotic tour combination! Experience where the American Civil War began on your Fort Sumter Tour. Then, walk in the steps of heroes on the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point .

Built in just 16 months at Newport News, Virginia, Yorktown was commissioned on April 15, 1943. Known as the “Fighting Lady,” this World War II ship was instrumental in the Pacific offensive that began in late 1943 and ended with the defeat of Japan in 1945.
