triumph tiger cruise control not working

  • Mar 25, 2024

Hi, I have a 2023 Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer. When using the cruise control, if I accelerate above the set speed and then wind the accelerator all the way back to cancel the cruise control it does not cancel. If I touch the brake or clutch it will cancel but not by using the accelerator. If I am on or below the set speed I can cancel using the accelerator. This does not seem right to me and has caught me out a couple of times with me thinking it is cancelled but when I get back to the set speed the bike stops decelerating (as the CC has not cancelled). Is this how it operates for others? Thanks, Mick.

If this is one of the ways of cancelling the cruise as per manual then perhaps take it to your dealer. Should be still under warranty. Could be a bad throttle switch I know mine has this and works all the time, but is a few years older, so different programing and parts. If I think I will need to slow down after accelerating, as in a pass/overtake, I just roll the throttle forward before the maneuver, and resume cruise when it's okay to do so.

I’d give the dealership a quick call and explain what it’s doing. It’s likely a programmable feature that’s been set. Just my thought.

Thanks guys. The switch works as it should except for if I am going faster than the set speed. The manual says this is a way of cancelling the cruise control. Qship, I get caught out when I am not expecting to have to slow down after accelerating but have to so roll the throttle forward expecting the CC to be cancelled. sikatri, I mentioned it to the dealer (service manager) last time I was there and he had not heard of the issue. He did acknowledge it seemed strange. He was going to contact Triumph. Just though I'd ask to see if anyone else was experiencing the same.

Explorer Problems: Cruise Control & Throttle

  • Add to quote

Greetings! After around 1100 miles, a couple of problems have crept up with my Tiger Explorer.... Let me preface that I'm an experienced rider with a stable of Triumphs and other bikes to compare some of my issues to ( in other words, I'm not over sensitive to anomalies in a machine...) 1.) After switching out the stock grips for the Triumph Heated Grips, I've found that the throttle is extremely funky and rather "loose". While many of made mention of a twitchy throttle with the drive-by-wire, this is downright funky...hit a slight bump in the road and you will get power surges, no matter how you adjust your grip. I find in general it is "vague" feeling at best...The stock was much better. I contacted Triumph and they stated they have only heard of this on an anecdotal basis, but I believe it could become a safety issue...especially on a bike that is designed to do it all. I would encourage you to express this to your dealer if you have a similar feeling, or call Triumph as well. My dealer believes it might be a tuning issue since it is drive-by-wire. I'm also going to look at throttle grease, which many have reported can help. 2.) I discovered that the cruise control on my bike will not disengage with the front brake application. SCARY! I went to apply some light braking, and found that with the adjustment in speed, the bike actually wanted to take off: it was adding speed while applying the front brake at the same time. Let me say it was a bit unnerving. I tested it multiple times at slower speeds, and it was consistent. If I applied the rear brake or clutch, it was an instant off. Triumph advised to take it in, and expressed concerned about what was reported on this last point.... Needless to say, she goes to the shop next week to take a quick peek. Otherwise, after some extremely enjoyable rides, she is definitely a hit, and Triumph knocked it out of the park with this bike. Let me know if you have had any similar issues!

Having the exact same issue with the cruise and the front brake switch for deactivation of cruise function. Worked great the first day, second day of riding, the bike just wants to accelerate really hard depending how hard you apply the front brakes. I have had to resort to cycling the clutch lever or apply the rear brake. I have found people in British forums with same issue.

This seems to be a common thing. I've taken apart the brake switch and there are actually two different switches in the housing. One for the cruise control deactivation and one to light the brake light. However, they both seem to activate at the same amount of lever travel. I could live with the cruise control part, but you can actually brake fairly hard before the brake light is activated. Try it yourself, ride at night and watch your mirrors for the brake light to come on as you are braking. On my bike, I could ride 'normal' and almost never activate the brake light (unless I use the rear brake, which lights when barely moving the pedal as it should). I have a feeling this will be a recall issue to fix.

triumph tiger cruise control not working

Traded my 2011 Tiger 800 for a new Explorer. Not sure that was a good move. The 800 had zero issues. Went for a 2 day ride through New Hampshire & Maine last week. Seat is a best good for 2 hours. On a On a very bumy road the overly sensative trottle created surgeing which was very upsetting. Going to dealer Monday K

Motorcycle.com and Motorcycle Consumer News both noted the problem with the throttle. It's worse when your standing on the pegs. Triumph needs to fix it. MCN also didn't like the front suspension and we not able to adjust it adequately.

Hi All, I picked up my Explorer last Thursday and took it for a good running in session around Wales on Saturday (did around 400 miles). I have heated grips which were fitted by the dealer and have to say that I have not had any problems with either throttle controlability or cruise control. I took the bike off on a gravelly track on the Breon Beacons, and whilst I agree that getting used to the fly-by-wire off road - I have found that control is satisfactory. In addition and putting a positive spin on the above comments, the engine is a real delight, not needing revs about the 5000 that I can currently go to based on the running in recommendations. The bike is comfortable, planted and just as agile (if not more) than my previous 955i Daytona. I quite understand now why this bike is outselling the GS1200. If I do experience any Cruise control issues as the miles pile on I will let you know, but to date the front brake has disconnected it with no issues...although to be honest I tend to flick the throttle forward to disengage as it seems more logical....and as a parting cooment, the bike does look awesome too!

triumph tiger cruise control not working

The fly-by-wire does take some time to get use to...I have only 8000 miles on the bike and I am just getting the "hang" of the throttle (verses my old Sprint which you needed a death grip to keep the throttle open). I also flick the throttle forward to disengage the cruise control - it is often a little abrupt (wakes up my girlfriend!). A great two up bike, specially with the top box...

triumph tiger cruise control not working

I thought I was sold on a T800 roadie until I started reading about the Explorer. Other than a few issues with throttle and cruise, it seems like a great machine!

triumph tiger cruise control not working

Update. This mornings commute was as hectic as ever, but I dd have a chance to try the CC again. This time it turned off with minimum front lever action, so all seems to be as designed. It is a good idea to keep the throttle open while doing this, as ^^ says, it makes things way smoother.

I've had my 1200 for almost 2 months and have put 3800 miles on her. It took a little getting use to the throttle by wire, VERY responsive. After the first 2 days of riding it now is second nature to me....wouldn't change a thing about the throttle. My seat took about 1000 miles to break in, the first 300 were absolutely terrible and gave me pause to question buying an after market or going to the soft seat available from Triumph. Glad I waited , the stock seat is one the most comfortable seats I've owned. The cruise works for the most part as designed. I've had a few glitches regarding not being able to engage from time to time. I would recommend when wanting to disengage the cruise...use the foot brake while maintaining throttle.....works great. Bottom line....I love this ride. Sometimes I miss my Tiger 1050 but that lasts for a few minutes and no regrets.

I had the same problem with the front brake not disengaging the Cruise, mentioned it at the first service and they adjusted the switch....... all good. As for the throttle response I had a Suzuki Gladius as my learner bike and it was waaaay worse for grabbiness than the Explorer. on it it was to do with the swap over point on the TPS from retarding to advancing, might be worth investigating. Warren

I had problems with the throttle at first, but I'm used to it now. It really didn't take that long. I had trouble with setting the cruise at first because of the touchiness of the throttle, but I have been able to get used to that, as well. I turn the cruise off by rolling forward on the throttle so I haven't noticed if the brake switch works or not, but I will be trying that. I traded a 800 XC for the Explorer and I'm glad I did. I much prefer that shaft drive and the bigger engine. I'm not much for riding on the dirt anyway so the Explorer is just right for me. I haven't had any mechanical issues at all and the seat is just fine for me, as well.

I have moved from a BMW R1200RT to the Explorer. Prefer the upright position of the Explorer and almost 90 degree knee angle. Have taken a while to get used to the firmness of the suspension, compared to the RT, which is soft like an armchair. The triple engine is smoother and more powerful than the boxer...the boxer being quite a bit more quirky. Before buying the Explorer, I test rode a Wethead GS. Far preferred the engine on the Triumph.

I had the exact same loose throttle problem after the dealer put on the heated grips. They were unable to remedy it. My fix was to add a rubber washer at end of grip, held in place by the handlebar end washer. It does keep the throttle from automatically returning, but to me that is way less scary than a loose throttle that guns your speed at the slightest twitch of your hand, especially when you go to stand on the pegs.

Help, i have just bought an OBD module to reset my service light. Plugged in and after resetting the spanner have now found that the quick shifter doesn't work, no TPMS showing also lost auto cancel indicators. Has anybody got any suggestions apart from going to Triumph dealer. Could these problems be caused by OBD module. Any help would be appreciated.

What module, software & lead have you used? Sounds like a software issue to me as these are all of the items that have to be activated by the dealer (except indicators) I think you might have reset the software and not the reset light?

Auto cancel indicator lost in the menu is a known bug of the Tiger 900 Software. You need to go to your dealer and ask them for an update

Afternoon, Had my Tiger 900 GT Pro delivered on 6th March, absolutely love the bike (it's my first Triumph) I can't fault it apart from the Cruise Control. I'm not sure if anyone has experienced the same issues. I know that I need to be in 3rd gear or higher and travelling 19mph or faster. The manual is telling me that I need to press (Set -) button to engage the Cruise Control and then adjust with the (+/-) buttons.I think i'm doing everything right but still I cannot get Cruise Control to turn on and I see no indicator for it on the TFT display. I called the dealer, they asked me to try this 4 point sequence that can activate CC on the bike if they forgot to do it. 1. press front brake 2. press rear brake 3. press clutch lever 4. roll throttle forward Unfortunately still no luck. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Are you sure that you are rolling the throttle forward enough? It's quite a stiff action and easy to not do properly. It's how to cancel it btw (when you are moving) and it's activated. Also, make sure that you do not have a brake light on permanently as that will stop the CC from coming on (clutch lever switch too) Failing that, dealer time!!!
Ducatitotriumph...thanks for the reply. Yep, rolling throttle forward to the point where it wont go any further. I'm trying to do the sequence smoothly as a 1, 2, 3, 4 I haven't noticed the brake light on or any other warning lights, apart from the (ABS) flashing when the bike is first switched on which can be normal. Trying to avoid an unnecessary trip to the dealer where the guy will fix the problem in 2 minutes...sods law I'll try the sequence a few more times before calling the dealer. Thanks!

SOLVED - Cruise Control not working After high handlebar install

  • Add to quote

I installed the Triumph High Handlebar Kit - Black A9630250 using the Triumph Bonneville Bobber High Bar Cable Kit A9630253 ordered from Amazon. Everything works ok with the exception of the Cruise Control. I'm getting concern if the cable kit is not compatible with cruise control. Any other ideas of what I need to check to troubleshoot why it isn't working? I check the fuses and they are all ok and like I said everything else on the bike seems ok. Its a 2018 Bonneville Bobber Black.

Take a look at these tips from a previous forum post here with similar problem. Hopefully should get your issue resolved. TUNEECU reset adaption looses cruise control There is a DRL and non-DRL wiring harness, yours is 2018 DRL which will be fully compatible with Cruise Control. Avoid the $150 dealer charge be re-flashing the ECM to enable the option yourself. There are other related posts to this problem, to find just use the search bar........

The dealer installed my high bars and the cruise didn't work after. The dealer had to reset it. It only took a few minutes so hopefully you have a dealer near you.

Well its good to know it might just be a reset. I tried some steps but did not work. Wonder if someone has any idea on how to reset other than the steps I did above

I tried those steps too, they didn't work. If you are close to a dealer I would go that route. What year is the bike? Is it still under warranty?

Not under warranty and dealer wants to charge $165 to check it

Q. Are these the install instruction you used? The '18 model BB's are configured with the fully optioned accessorized main wiring harness by default I'm sure!

  • A9630253-EN.pdf 1.3 MB Views: 400

Can you believe that I called 3 service departments and no one suggested to check the harness orientation?? Another member @jimdirt suggested to check and I realized that when I skimmed through the instructions I missed this... Note: • When fitting the left hand switch harness extension the black harness connector must be positioned towards the front of the motorcycle. Sure enough, the harness was backwards! It's all working perfect now!!

I'd just like to reiterate how much i love forums. This was my exact problem and fix too.

Had my T120 experiencing the same problem after LED installed. At the dealership the mechanic troubleshot the problem with the ECU and told me the issue was with the aftermarket led light… Started my research online, read all your comments, and purchased resistors on Amazon for $8. Installed one of the resistors on the tail light and the problem was solved. Cruise Control is working again. Awesome. Thank you.

Tiger 900 RP Transmission fault

Discussion in ' Triumph Tigers ' started by Airrick , Feb 7, 2023 .

I have a 2020 Tiger 900 Rally Pro and I have got intermittent transmission faults since the bike was new. It has 6500 miles on it now. When it was under warranty I took it to the dealer twice for this and they cleared the code and said it was an anomoly. The problem is that it keeps happening and the frequency is increasing. I haven't been able to find any consistency as to when it happens. It seems random. I get the transmission fault on the screen and also a check engine light pops up. The quick shifter and cruise control will not work when the transmission fault comes up. Usually I can shut down the bike and restart it and the transmission fault will go away for a short time and both cruise and quick shifter will work again. The engine runs strong but the check engine light will stay on. I read that triumph updated the quick shifter due to issues so I thought it might have been the quick shifter but I changed it to the new model number (Part number #A9770186) and went for a long ride today and the same thing happened. Does anyone have any ideas? I really love the bike but this issue is sucking the fun out of the bike. Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear this, would this probably be a sensor of some sort and not a real transmission problem though Which I know is not a good thing thing but better than tranny failure

If they have lemon laws where you are and the dealer and Triumph won't deal with it, go that route if you can.

Do you have bar risers on by chance? I was getting that same error, seemingly random. Turns out the risers were putting to much pressure on the wiring harness. Would only occur when I turned the bars all the way. I removed the risers and haven't had the issue in almost a year.

I'd check the free play in the clutch lever and look at any adjustments on the quick shifter. If it rides normal and shifts smoothly then it's more likely that it isn't making a position switch. I don't know how the quick shift is laid out on those, but if it looks to hit a sensor at the end of it's travel and can't get there either because it's out of position or something is blocking it (debris) you can get faults. Similar to the shims they use to get wheel speed sensors the right distance from the ring.

For what it's worth, my Rally Pro had the wiring for the side stand safety misrouted from the factory; it was loose and made intermittent contact with the chain as it went around the front sprocket. Eventually the insulation abraded through, and one day after some heavy rain the bike began bucking badly under load and threw a transmission fault. In my case it was very obvious because the shorting safety switch wiring was actually intermittently cutting the ignition, but have your dealer check the wire routing anyway just to be safe. In my case, my dealer's mechanic found the issue, replaced the switch under warranty and routed the wire correctly, and the bike has been flawless ever since. --mark

I like the point where the clutch friction begins to engage to occur with the lever closer to the handgrip than was set up by the dealer. The service tech cautioned me that the clutch lever sensor was sensitive to the lever location and could cause a fault. I let the service tech set the lever to the "proper" location and I became accustomed to that location (I may have adjusted the position setting knob also, can't recall details now). For what it is worth, that lever on the left side of the handle bar is the "shift assist". All of my bikes have had one of these.

When the faults occur, does the screen still accurately show what gear you are in? I had a similar issue to yours on my 1200 Rally Pro shortly after I took possession. Same symptoms you mentioned but I also lost my gear indicator. Turned out the faults were being caused by a faulty gear position sensor. After swapping the sensor I have been trouble free for 9k miles. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
