Tower of Power, the legendary funk and soul band renowned for their horn-led sound, are set to celebrate a significant milestone as they commemorate 55 years of touring. To honor the achievement, the band has announced over 30 additional tour dates across the United States to conclude the anniversary celebration this year. The second half of this momentous event will commence on Aug. 10 and extend until Dec. 17, encompassing various destinations from the far Pacific Northwest to the Deep South.

Reflecting on their remarkable journey, Emilio Castillo, the founder and bandleader of Tower of Power, shared, “55 years have flown by in the blink of an eye, and this year has been extraordinary. From a captivating late-night performance at the Jazz Fest in New Orleans alongside the Symphony to mesmerizing crowds at festivals and clubs throughout the UK and Europe, we are thrilled to share this special moment with our fans worldwide, particularly during the holiday season. Here’s to 55 more years!”

Currently amidst a sold-out European tour, the band will return to the United States for a series of performances in select markets. Notable stops include Providence, R.I., and Kansas City, Mo., where the local symphony will accompany the band. Additionally, Tower of Power will headline a momentous hometown show at Oakland, Calif.’s beloved Fox Theater in December.

While the August, September, October, and part of November performances will showcase traditional Tower of Power shows, from Thanksgiving onwards fans can expect a holiday twist. Titled Holidays & Hits, these shows will blend the band’s beloved chart-topping hits with a sprinkling of beloved holiday classics.

In addition to standard admission tickets, Tower of Power is offering a limited quantity of VIP access for most shows on the newly announced tour. The VIP experience includes preferred seating, a Tower of Power bomber jacket, a collectible VIP laminate, Tower of Power pins, and a commemorative VIP ticket.

Bay Area funk and soul pioneers, Tower of Power , have detailed the kick-off to their 55th anniversary tour. The band, known for their iconic hits such as “You’re Still A Young Man,” “What is Hip?” and “So Very Hard To Go” has been leaving their fans wowed since their earliest days in Oakland.

Tower of Power will be hitting the road in January to celebrate the 55 years of genre-shaping music, including a stop in Buffalo, NY with the Buffalo Philharmonic. The tour raps from the West Coast down through the Southeast, performing in marquee theaters and performing arts centers. “We were a soul band called the Motowns,” shared founder and bandleader Emilio Castillo. “Rocco was the bass player, I was there and my brother was the drummer. I met Doc back in 1968 and gave him an audition. He came in the band and we eventually changed our name to the Tower of Power.”

In its current formation, the band features original members Emilio Castillo, Stephen “Doc” Kupka and David Garibaldi, along with longtime members Jerry Cortez, Roger Smith, Tom Politzer, Adolfo Acosta and Marc van Wageningen. Most recently TOP was rejoined by former member Mike Bogart and is now being led by vocalist and one-time performer on the Voice, Mike Jerel.

“WOW, 55 years!! Tower of Power is heading coast to coast in 2023 to celebrate 55 years of being a band,” Castillo went on. “I can remember back in the day dreaming about getting all the way to Sacramento [from Oakland]. To say the least, we’ve far exceeded our wildest dreams. An eternal thank you to our fans for keeping the spirit of Tower of Power alive for all these years. Looking forward to seeing you in 2023 for a proper SOUL VACCINATION!”

Robin Trower (Born 9 March 1945) is an English blues singer songwriter and former member of the band Procul Harum, from Catford, South East London.

While growing up by the seaside in the sunny town of Southend-On-Sea, Trower’s early interest in music was evident through his attempts to start numerous bands. After his latest effort, “The Jam” disbanded, Trower joined Gary Brooker, his schoolfriend, to play for his band, Procul Harum.

This progressive and psychedelic rock band, named after a friend’s pet cat, provided Trower with the musical outlet he had been looking for in his formative years. Procul Harum saw instant success with their Barouque style debut single, “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. The song was a commercial success, topping charts and selling millions of copies worldwide and was seen by many as the theme song to 1967’s summer of love.

Trower continued his work with Procul Harum for a number of years, touring and playing notable shows, such as the Isle of Wight festival and an opening slot on a Jimi Hendrix tour. After releasing five albums with the band, he left to start his own project, “The Robin Trower Band” in 1973.

With a new band came a new sound, and many of the band’s early albums were recognised for their Hendrix influenced style, most notably 1974’s “Bridge of Sighs”. The Robin Trower Band has released 19 studio albums since 1973, plus collaborative albums with the likes of Bryan Ferry and Jack Bruce. The band’s latest effort was 2013’s “Roots And Branches”.

He is considered by many as an icon in the guitar world, and has influenced man blues and rock ‘n’ roll fans with his signature bends and solos. Trower himself cites James Brown’s ability to merge the two genres as a major influence on him.

Live reviews

I grew up with Robin Trower. Bridge of Sighs was a pivotal album in my life-long journey toward the blues. I had dreamed of seeing him as a kid, and just missed out on an opportunity when he played in Dallas in 1976. Since that time, I've regretted having to say "I've never seen Robin Trower".

But no longer!!! Robin and his power trio came to Nashville to play in a converted warehouse called Marathon Music Works. The place is cool, though the acoustics are not great. I think I read it'll hold about 1000 people, and it look pretty full to me. We had seats only three rows from the stage, so we had a birds eye view of the show.

If you saw Robin walking down any street, you'd think "there goes somebodies old grampa". But when he picked up that Fender, I was immediately transported back to the late 70's. And when he began those haunting riffs on Bridge of Sighs, I felt like a little school girl who simply wanted to scream and cry in absolute joyful splendor. Yes, the dude still has it. Yes, he's still a force to be reckoned with. Yes, the lead singer is a very nice replacement for the original singer. Yes, the drummer is goofy, but an amazing stick man. Yes, Robin sings in some of his newer songs, and sounded great (except for the acoustic weakness of the venue). And YES, I LOVED IT!! Amazing show. And now I can say, I've seen Robin Trower LIVE!!!!

The epicness of what Robin Trower is, came to full bloom. It was nearly impossible to simply relax, and enjoy the ride, without constantly thinking to yourself, oh my god, this is truly a legend, and he is awesome. Each song, takes you on a new ride, and you get to watch Robin Trower become the song, not just play it.

It's impossible not to hear Jimmy Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton all playing within Robin Trower, but it's all just Robin Trower. This is kind of hard to explain, but deserves the depth and appreciation for this legend. Holy crap was this one of those "I was there" nights. You don't need to understand the history of legendary guitar players to appreciate seeing Robin Trower and his band, you can just go, and enjoy the ride. But, you will be thinking, did I just witness rock history? Yes you did. Well, I sure did. I have seen Robin Trower and his different bands several times these past 30 years, and the current band that played last night, just might have been the best. They were having fun, and were all in the "Trower Trance" with each song.

You could tell these guys were having fun, way more fun then any other of his past bands.

Watching a Robin Trower show is a spellbinding experience. Despite being 69 years old, the blues-rock vocalist and master of guitar still plays as if he was in his heyday, demonstrating his highly regarded status among strummers around the world.

Born in Catford, South East London, Trower originally made a name for himself playing in progressive rock band Procol Harum in the 60’s, before venturing off and forming his eponymous band in 1971. Since then he has pumped out an astonishing 19 albums in 30 years, with his most recent being 2013’s “Roots and Branches”

“One moment while I make sure I’m not in tune” Trower jokes with a knowing glint in his eye as he enters the stage. After that it’s straight into it as he strokes out a flawless rendition of “Too Rolling Stoned” with the vocals coming courtesy of long time collaborator James Dewar. The show is jam packed with Trower’s trademark Seventies style riffs and swirling lengthy solos, which have seen him often bracketed alongside the likes of Hendrix, Clapton and Beck. If you’re a fan of any of those or you already know the magic of Robin Trowers music, then I highly recommend catching him live!

I can't think of a time that I wasn't a fan of the rock guitarist, Robin Trower, so when I saw he was going to be doing a live show at the Waterfront in Norwich, I just had to go!Trower is a guitar genius, and thoroughly entertained the packed venue with his guitar of choice, the Fender Stratocaster. The audience went crazy when he played "Too Rolling Stoned," "Day of the Eagle," and his most popular single, "Little Bit of Sympathy." While it was a concert venue and there was ample opportunity to blind the audience with lights and excessive extra noise making equipment, Trower didn't do that. Instead, he simply played his guitar to the accompaniment of drums, a keyboard, and another guitarist, and let his own guitar keep the audience on our feet, swaying, with our hands in the air, completely enjoying the 90 minute spectacle. He played on without a break until he finished his set with the deep and moving "Bridge of Sighs," but was called back onto the stage to perform an encore of "Living Out of Time."Robin Trower has been in the music business for decades, both on his own and with other bands. It was a pleasure to see him perform live.

Robin Trower, as always played great! A nice mix of new stuff and his awesome oldies: Daydream, Day Of The Eagle, Bridge Of Sighs, The Fool In Me, Somebody Calling, Too Rolling Stoned, For Earth Below. A couple tunes from 20th Century Blues and cuts from his new album. The venue on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired. The Canyon Club in Agoura has great sound, but they packed in way too many people with very little standing room for general admission. People just kept coming and those of us trying to see the band were pretty much blocked - unless you were 6'8". Plenty of seats for overpriced and lousy dinner, and the management refuses to turn on the air conditioning! Sweat was literally running down off my head. This isn't a Mississippi tin roof road house, it's a modern and spacious (if you don't oversell admission) venue in an area with some of the most expensive real estate in the nation and the comfort level shouldn't make paying customers feel like they are in a dive bar. I have scratched Canyon Club off my list of venues I will see RT at in the future.

In a word, the show was fabulous - I could go on and on about it but people are so busy these days... It was an experience, that is for sure! When he first came out we were all a little wary - would he be able to deliver like we were hoping he would? Well, he did - I honestly haven't been to too many guitar concerts, but I will say he is one of the best players (if not THE best) I've ever heard in my life (and I sincerely mean that). Not only that, but he seems like such a great person, too - he's very modest, just came out and greeted us cordially then got right down to business. We were treated to most of the 'Bridge of Sighs' LP; I was happy about that, because that is mostly what they show of him on YouTube.

I am a new fan of his - I don't remember him from the '70's, but that really doesn't matter. If you are a fan of this kind of music, I highly recommend that you get out and see this fellow, if you can. He still plays as good as ever - so catch him if you can. He's awesome!

Robin is awesome! He is still one of the premier guitarists to ever walk the Earth! His show was different from when I last saw him about 5 years ago. This time, he played more of his rock classics, but he still had some slower and extended riffs when he seems to go into a zone where no one else is capable of going, channeling whatever inspires him as if his brain, hands and guitar were all of one amazing and synchronized mind. After the song, he sometimes looks as if he's completely surprised as well as pleased at how everything turned out while he was gone. What a terrific entertainer! I will add that the opening act, who goes by the name The Mighty Orq, was someone I'd not heard of, but holy smokes, what an incredible blues guitarist and singer! He is from Houston TX. If his show comes back to my neighborhood, I will be sure not to miss it!

Perfect set list.

The band was Amazing!

Drums were featured on the two "For Earth Below" songs and they were perfect. Bill Lordin really raised the bar with that record and this performance took me back to that tour.

Singing the James Dewar songs is tough and they were awesome. Every line treated with honor and respect.

Sold out show with standing ovations on almost every song, Robin and the band looked like they were really enjoying the show.

I've seen Robin with James Dewar and Davey Pattison in the past. This show was as good, if not better, than all of those shows.

Wish Robin was coming to Denver so I could see them again.

I saw Robin Trower first in 1975 at Lancaster uni (UK) and was blown away. (A few years ago I saw him in Fleetwood with the trio plus vocalist line-up, and such a line-up is not as good).

This show was very, very good, pretty well faultless with alternating new and old songs. The guitar was loud for a while, and the drums were too, and the young guy on bass and (most of the), vocals will never be able to sing as powerfully well as Jimmy Dewar did, but let none of this put you off!!!!

The sound improved, the venue was posh, the playing was faultless, the soloing inventive - not cliched, and I'm very glad I went.

74 years old and still rockin. His bass player/vocalist sounds very similar to Robin's original guy, the great James Dewar. I especially liked the $11.00 beers at 20 Monroe Live in Grand Rapids, where he performed. Very reasonably priced. The ridiculous price gouging continues at these entertainment venues, ballparks etc. That said, Trower was still amazing. If he comes back to the states again, and to Grand Rapids, I will go see him again. I will just stay away from the, probably by then, $13.00 beers.

For six decades, Robin Trower’s career has been an act of quiet rebellion. Rewind the reels of the British guitarist’s backstory and you’ll find an artist who has always rolled the dice rather than take the path of least resistance.

In the early-’70s, Trower announced his fearless streak by leaving the security of Procol Harum for a gold-selling solo career whose Bridge Of Sighs - album filled the stadiums of North America. Since then, he’s flowed from his own projects to collaborations with everyone from Jack Bruce to the United State Of Mind supergroup alongside Maxi Priest and Livingstone Brown.

A literal lifetime since he first stepped onto the British blues circuit as a cub gunslinger, that fabled Trower power shows no sign of burning out. In fact, the iconic guitarist’s late-period acceleration is something to behold, sweeping up new fans alongside the hardcore who have followed his every move.

Fast-forward to 2023 and Trower’s new studio album, ‘Joyful Sky’, represents vindication for his latest flash of artistic instinct. Always receptive to singers who can elevate his emotive guitar touch, the 78-year-old heard a quality in the smoky power of the acclaimed New Yorker Sari Schorr that made him want to tear down and rebuild his songcraft around her.

“I think this record is more accessible than the stuff I’ve done over the last few years and I’ve got a feeling it’ll reach more people,” says Trower of ‘Joyful Sky. ‘“At my age, to still be doing it, and still turning out good stuff – you really appreciate what a blessing that is.”

Robin Trower at Blues Power Live:

London Islington Assembly – Tue 28th

Gateshead Glasshouse – Thu 30th

Holmfirth Picturedrome – Fri 31st

I’ll Be Moving On – new single from Robin and Sari Schorr

Robin Trower  and  Sari Schorr  have revealed the smoky late-night vibe of new song  “I’ll Be Moving On”,  which is taken from their stunning album  ‘Joyful Sky’  – released on  27 th  October  via  Provogue/Mascot Label Group.  You can watch the video:

Pre-order the album here:  https://lnk.to/robintrower

Talking about the propulsive and Bond-like groove of “I’ll Be Moving On,” Trower says, “This is my favourite track on the album,” says Trower. “It’s soulful, has a vibe about it and shows Sari at her very best.”

“I’ve worked with some great vocalists over the years, but Sari is dynamite, just an absolute knockout,” reflects Trower. “This album really pushed me, made me write in different keys and arrange songs for her voice. I went more down the R&B route this time, because I knew she’d be great with that flavour. But the blues still underpins everything I do – and there’s definitely elements from my ’70s stuff in this new album.”

The New York powerhouse singer Schorr adds, “I’ll Be Moving On” is quite special because it beautifully encapsulates the synergy between Robin and me. This collaboration weaves together blues, rock, and soul in a way that showcases Robin’s unique musical prowess.”

The greatest moments in Trower’s discography have become required listening for any student of rock ‘n’ roll. Don’t bet against the highlights of Joyful Sky joining the canon. They have previously revealed  “Burn”   from the album. “Burn is about someone who’s trying to calm down their partner,” Trower says of the smouldering opener.

For six decades, Robin Trower’s career has been an act of quiet rebellion. Rewind the reels of the British guitarist’s backstory and you’ll find an artist who has always rolled the dice rather than take the path of least resistance. In the early-’70s, Trower announced his fearless streak by leaving the security of Procol Harum for a gold-selling solo career whose ever-present   Bridge Of Sighs – album filled the stadiums of North America. Since then, he’s flowed from his own projects to collaborations with everyone from Jack Bruce to the United State Of Mind supergroup alongside Maxi Priest and Livingstone Brown.  Fast-forward to 2023 and Trower’s new studio album, Joyful Sky, represents vindication for his latest flash of artistic instinct.

“I was already a fan of Robin, absolutely,” Schorr says. “You don’t want to use the word ‘genius’ casually, but I believe he is a genius. The way he feels and hears music is so acute, it’s like he has superhuman powers. I had so much faith in his vision. You just grab on and hold tight.”

“I think this record is more accessible than the stuff I’ve done over the last few years and I’ve got a feeling it’ll reach more people,” says Trower of Joyful Sky. “At my age, to still be doing it, and still turning out good stuff – you really appreciate what a blessing that is.”

by Em Casalena April 16, 2024, 10:59 am

Veteran shock-rocker Alice Cooper announced his co-headlining tour with Rob Zombie a while back, but that tour (with Ministry and Filter) was simply not enough for the tour-happy legend. No opening acts have been announced.

Brian Harman Was in No Mood to Answer Questions After Late-Round Struggles

Harman dropped three shots down the stretch Thursday to finish up with a one-under 70.

  • Author: Kyle Koster

Brian Harman was cruising to a nice opening round at the RBC Heritage on Thursday afternoon but his good vibes were ruined by a bogey on No. 17 and a double-bogey on No. 18, which brought him from 4-under to just 1-under. With conditions facilitating excellent scoring, the late stumble put him behind the eight ball as he fights for positioning headed into the weekend at the event, which doesn't have a cut.

Harman, the reigning Open champion, fulfilled his post-round media obligations by fielding four questions over 45 seconds, saying 43 words in response, and getting the heck out of there as quickly as possible.

This side of pro golf exists! It's fun to see it. The uber-angry-I-just-made-double interview. Four questions, 43 words in response, 45 seconds. pic.twitter.com/I0aJc3HhCo — Sean Zak (@Sean_Zak) April 19, 2024

Credit where it's due. If someone asks you if you can walk them through the hole that ruined everything you can simply say no and walk away. That's something weekend duffers can use when they return home and are in a foul mood.

The unorthodox interview did little to spark Harman who is one-over in his second round at the moment and nine shots off the lead.
