How Many Disney Cruises to Hawaii Are There?

In comparison with other Disney Cruise Line destinations, Hawaii has significantly fewer sailings than other itineraries. There are typically two to four Disney Cruises visiting Hawaii each year .

Due to the small number of cruises, it is essential to book your trip as early as possible since there are only a limited number of staterooms available. The Vacationeer can help you pick out the perfect Disney cruise based on your budget and preferences.

How Long Are Disney’s Hawaii Cruises?

Disney Cruise Line offers a unique opportunity to experience the stunning beauty of Hawaii through a limited number of Hawaiian cruises. Disney Hawaiian cruises usually last 9-10 nights, while South Pacific Cruises (which also include Hawaii) last around 15 nights .

Experienced and adventurous cruisers may prefer these extended Disney cruises to Hawaii and Disney South Pacific cruises, spending more time in Disney’s Hawaiian ports of call and aboard the magnificent Disney Wonder out at sea. First-time Disney cruisers , however, may find the shorter Disney cruises from Florida to Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island , a better choice, as it offers a glimpse of Disney’s magical experiences without the commitment of an extended trip while still being in a sunny tropical setting.

Since availability is limited, it’s important to act quickly to secure your spot on one of these exclusive cruises. The Vacationeer can provide expert trip-planning guidance to ensure you choose the perfect Disney cruise that fits your budget and preferences. They can also keep you informed about future Disney Cruise Line Hawaiian cruise itineraries. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them with any inquiries – they’re friendly, and their services are free!

How Much Do Disney Cruises to Hawaii Cost?

Guests are often pleasantly surprised at how much value they receive on Disney cruises, and these Hawaiian cruises are no exception.

For example, the March 2024 10-Night Hawaiian Cruise from Honolulu to Vancouver starts at $5,200 .

The cost of your Disney Hawaiian cruise depends on the stateroom type you choose and the number of people in your party. More luxurious staterooms generally begin at a higher price than those in the Inside tier. Adding more than two people to your reservation will also increase the cost.

For instance, if you have a family of four, an Inside stateroom starts at around $7,500. And if you want to upgrade to the Verandah category, which offers spectacular ocean views, it starts at around $7,800 for two people — and roughly $11,400 for four.

It’s important to note that prices and availability are subject to change, so it’s always wise to check with The Vacationeer for the most up-to-date information.

Also don’t forget to factor in airfare; these cruises are typically one-way voyages which do not return to the original departure port. You’ll almost certainly need to purchase “open jaw” airfare, with one leg of the flight being as far away as Canada or possibly even Australia.

Disney Hawaiian Cruises: What’s Included in the Price?

Disney cruises are all-inclusive , which is a selling point and a place where value is found. Dining, entertainment, activities, and services are all included in the price, as are character meet-and-greets, movie screenings, Broadway-quality shows, water activities, and fireworks.

Oceaneer Club, Edge, and Vibe provide complimentary activities for children and teens. At the same time, adults can access a range of amenities such as an adult-only pool, nightclub, and fitness center.

Moreover, the price of a Disney cruise includes port expenses, taxes, and fees, making it an exceptional value for families. However, keep in mind that airfare, gratuities , specialty restaurants, spas, shore excursions (Port Adventures), bottled beverages, and alcohol purchased on a Disney cruise aren’t covered.

About the Disney Hawaiian Cruise Terminals

Disney’s 2024 and 2025 Hawaiian Cruises are all one-way cruises. Your cruise will start in either:

  • Vancouver (British Columbia), Canada
  • Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Sydney, Australia

You’ll end in one of the remaining two ports.

Given that most travelers from the US will be traveling from either Honolulu or Vancouver, we’re focusing on these two ports below.

Disney Cruise Line Honolulu Terminal

During one-way Hawaiian cruises, Disney Cruise Line either departs or arrives at Honolulu Harbor (aka the Port of Honolulu). Located on the southern coast of Oahu Island, Honolulu is Hawaii’s largest seaport and capital city. The harbor is deep and protected, ideal for cruises.

Honolulu Harbor has two cruise terminals – the Aloha Tower Cruise Terminal (Pier 11) and Terminal Pier 2. Disney Cruise Line uses Pier 2, which offers modern passenger amenities and luggage storage for a nominal fee.

As the state’s principal airport, Honolulu International Airport offers regular domestic and international flights. It is easily accessible by Uber, taxi, or Oahu Island’s public transportation. The Port of Honolulu is about five miles from Honolulu International Airport.

Disney Aulani Splurges: 11 Extras Worth the Money

By: Author Leslie Harvey

Share this!:

A vacation at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa , in Hawaii is a bucket list trip for many family travelers. The magic of Disney plus the aloha spirit of Hawaii make for a luxurious and fun-filled travel combination. Of course, Hawaiian vacations are also pretty pricey. It is vital to spend your money wisely — to know what is really worthy of a splurge and what to skip.

Disney Aulani Large Pool

Luckily, Aulani has a huge number of totally free activities included in a regular stay. There are definitely ways to experience a lot of action at Aulani without spending much additional cash once you get there.

For most people, however, a trip to Hawaii and to Aulani is a truly special vacation experience. Many want to splurge on some special “above and beyond” experiences. Disney has a lot of those as well. The key is knowing what extras are right for your family’s interests, the ages and stages of your kids, and your budget.

Disney Aulani Splurges - Aulani at Night

My family has now taken five trips to Aulani in the last decade, including our most recent visit in October 2022. A lot has changed since our first trip in spring 2013 was when I was pregnant with my now 9 year old son. The resort is larger and has many more activity and dining choices. Over the years, we have experienced nearly everything Aulani has to offer. So we have some thoughts about what has provided us with value and what activities fit families best at different points in time.

Planning an Aulani vacation and need guidance as to what things to do and where to spend money? Here are some of the extras and splurges that we found truly worthwhile you may want to consider too.

Disney Aulani Splurges Worth Your While

1. snorkeling at rainbow reef.

Rainbow Reef is a man-made saltwater lagoon at Aulani stocked with ocean life, set among the pools. Guests can rent snorkel equipment and dive in with the fish.

Rainbow Reef Disney Aulani

For family travelers with kids ready to snorkel and who can handle the colder water, this extra activity is simply a must-do. Kids enjoy looking out for hidden Mickeys and menehune in the depths during the adventure as well as admiring the many varieties of local fish. Both my kids participated for the first time when they were age 7. My more adventurous daughter could have handled it a few years earlier, but my more cautious son was definitely pushing his comfort zone a little bit at that age (but ultimately enjoyed it).

Rainbow Reef Snorkeling Disney Aulani

Admission prices have creeped up over the years, but this activity is still a relative value. In 2022, snorkeling at Rainbow Reef is $25 per adult ages 10 & up and $20 for children ages 9 and under for single day access. The price includes all day access to the snorkel equipment. Length of stay access is $45 for adults and $35 for children.

Best For: Families with elementary age kids and older , Adults

2. Character Meal at Makahiki

For many Disney travelers, a vacation is not complete without a character meal. There is thankfully a character meal available daily at Aulani: Makahiki restaurant for breakfast.

Disney Aulani Makahiki Character Breakfast with Mickey Mouse

For one set price ($48 for adults, and $29 for kids ages 3-9), guests can order from a menu that includes classics like scrambled eggs, pancakes, or omelets and local favorites like loco moco. Kids meals have several varieties, including a Mickey and Minnie waffle plate. Servings on both the adult and kids plates are hearty. Baskets of pastries and a fruit platter are served as well.

There is a posed photo (usually with Mickey) before guests are seated for the meal, available to purchase separately at the end of the meal for an additional fee. Then most guests greet Chef Goofy for informal photos on the way to their table. Additional characters come by your table for photos and hugs. The characters have changed up a bit in recent years. On our last trip, we met Max and Pluto (previously, Chip and Dale and Stitch were regulars). A local musician also plays and sings during the breakfast.

Disney Aulani Splurges - Makahiki Character Breakfast Goofy

Note that there have been quite a few changes to character meals at Aulani over the years. Breakfast used to be a buffet, but we confirmed on our most recent trip that the buffet is very unlikely to return. Aulani also used to offer a character dinner 3x a week (Menehune Mischief) but there are no plans for that experience to return either.

Aulani dining reservations open 30 days in advance online. Character meals are a very popular choice so I highly recommend setting an alert to make your reservation. In 2022, reservations open just after midnight Hawaii time, so yes that means a middle of the night wakeup for folks on Pacific time if you really want to make sure to get the day and time you prefer! But if you miss out, there is often some availability for character dining on site too. Check early and often with the hostess stand or concierge.

Best For: Families with kids from babies to tweens.

3. KA WA’A Luau

Many major Hawaii resorts have luaus, but they are not all created equal. I’ve been to quite a few of them at this point in our Hawaii travels. Aulani’s luau, unveiled in fall 2016, is one of the standouts. We’ve now attended three times (once during a time of extensive modifications in summer 2021 which have largely been lifted now).

So many luaus have long lines and jam-packed conditions. Aulani’s feels spacious and relaxed. We especially enjoyed the numerous free pre-dinner activities for children like Hawaiian tattoos, paper art, and lei-making.

Disney Aulani Splurges - Kawaa Luau Tattoo

The storytelling within the show is powerful and more authentically focused on Hawaii, as opposed to many luaus which are more of a pan-Polynesia combination show. And of course, the food is plentiful and delicious, from the roasted pig to fresh fish to the extensive kid’s buffet options.

Disney Aulani Splurges - Kawaa Luau

To be sure, all this quality comes at a price, making the KA WA’A luau a major splurge for families. General admission seating is $170 Adults/$99 children (ages 3 through 9). Children under 3 are free. VIP seating with early check-in, priority seating, and an included welcome photo is $199 Adults/$119 Keiki (ages 3 through 9). Even at the increased price, we have found that VIP seating is worth the extra incremental splurge for the best seating. But it sells out very early, so I highly recommend booking luau tickets as soon as you are contemplating a trip to Aulani.

Best For: Families of all ages, especially multi-gen groups.

4. Laniwai Spa

On my first trip to Aulani, I don’t think I even realized the resort had a spa. Luckily, we didn’t make the same mistake on subsequent trips. Laniwai Spa is one of the very best things Aulani has to offer and is a relaxing escape from the poolside hustle and bustle.

Laniwai Spa Aulani

So many luxury spas are so fancy that they almost make me feel uncomfortable. Disney’s Laniwai Spa at Aulani somehow manages to have all of that same luxury while still feeling welcoming, unpretentious, and even a little whimsical. The highlight is the outdoor hydrotherapy garden Kula Wai where visitors can jump in pools of different temperatures and stand under a variety of rain-style outdoor showers.

Disney Aulani Splurges - Laniwai Spa Hydrotherapy garden

It is pricey, but still fairly in line with what luxury spas in Hawaii charge (and ultimately nicer than any other spa I’ve been to in Hawaii). A 50 minute standard lomilomi massage is $195 before tip.

What is a little tricky at the moment when it comes to spa appointments for parents with younger kids is childcare. On previous trips, we relied on the kids club, Aunty’s Beach House at Aulani , to watch our kids while we got a massage. But as of fall 2022, Aunty’s has extremely limited hours available only in pre-set 1.5 hour or 2 hour (premium) blocks – likely not really enough to enjoy a full spa treatment and the included hydrotherapy gardens and hard to align perfectly with a spa appointment time. Parents likely have to trade off care for kids or hire an outside babysitter until Aunty’s makes a fuller return. (Insider tip: the trusted Disney nanny service Nanny-Land has recently expanded to Aulani. Find out more about their services here and be sure to use Crown Code: TWT for $80 in savings off registration!)

Best For: Parents who deserve a break.

5. Painted Sky

Next door to Laniwai Spa is Painted Sky, which bills itself as a “HI Style Studio.” Essentially, it’s Aulani’s answer to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, where kids ages 3-12 can get a makeover.

Disney Aulani Painted Sky Makeover Outfits

Instead of princess dresses, the outfits available are a little more Hawaii style. For girls, there are beautiful Tori Richard Hawaiian dresses and some Moana-inspired options. For boys, there are lots of handsome Hawaiian shirts as well as some bathsuit/rash guard combinations. Many guests make an appointment for their children early in the day before a luau reservation or before a sunset family beach photo shoot. Prices for these packages in 2022 are $120-$145.

My daughter has been to Painted Sky twice and it is once of her favorite things to do at Aulani. She did a full makeover when she was 12 but also returned this past trip when she was 13. For older kids as well as adults, Painted Sky offers a hairstyle only appointment for just $40 where guests can get one of several pool or luau-ready braid designs.

Disney Aulani Painted Sky Makeover Package

Reservations for Painted Sky open 180 days in advance, so plan ahead if you want an appointment that works before a luau evening. Same day appointments are often available for hair only styling.

Best For: kids looking for a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique style experience .

6. Paddleboard Rental

On many of our Aulani vacations, we have rented a paddleboard at some point during the trip. Each and every time, this splurge has been worth it for our active family.

Aulani Paddleboarding

The calm lagoon water is simply perfect for beginners or for the more experienced who want to paddle around with their kids. My husband has taken each of our kids out on the board with him and then we often switch off during our hour rental so I can get in some time as well. On our last trip, big sister even took her brother out for the first time.

An hour was more than enough time for several family members to give the activity a try. Rentals are available at the beach activities hut, Makiki Joe’s, for $45 an hour.

Best For: Families with kids ages 3-4+ (kids can ride with an adult)

7. Hawai’i Excursions

Disney Aulani Splurges - Catamaran Excursion

We never left the resort the first time we visited Aulani, but soon figured out how important it is to get out and explore other parts of O’ahu. On our subsequent trips, we almost always have taken at least a partial day to see something else outside of the resort. Of course, it’s entirely possible to explore on the cheap by renting a car and exploring on your own. But a lot of families like the convenience and sure thing of an organized tour.

Related: First Timers Guide to Waikiki with Kids

A few trips ago, we went on one of the off-site excursions that Disney offers through its concierge desk with one of the preferred contracted vendors. The specific options change over time, but usually there are offerings like historical tours at Pearl Harbor, water adventures, land adventures like zip-lining, and more.

We took a catamaran excursion at the time. We left from a marina about 15 minutes from the resort and cruised for a half day to see dolphins and snorkel off the shore of one of O’ahu’s most famous and remote beaches.

Disney Aulani Splurges - Catamaran Snorkeling

These excursions are almost like miniature Adventures by Disney day trips because of the presence of an experienced Disney guide making everything run smoothly. Our guide was exceedingly knowledgeable and turned our day of sailing into a full fledged educational experience. He shared Hawaiian history and culture during our bus transports. During our snorkeling adventure, he even grabbed an octopus from the ocean depths and brought it to the surface for kids to view.

Disney Aulani Splurges - Catamaran Snorkeling with Octopus

Like the luau, the excursions Disney offers are a major splurge – often several hundred dollars a person. But the full service experience from Disney is like no other and often all the logistics from transportation to food are covered.

Best For: Families with elementary age kids and older open to a little adventure.

8. Refillable Mug (& Popcorn Bucket)

Disney Aulani Refillable Mug

Many Disney destinations over the years have offered an all-you-can-drink refillable mug option. There’s one at Aulani too! For just $22.95 plus tax, you can purchase a mug that can be used for soda, coffee, tea, and hot cocoa for the entirety of your stay. Given the cost of beverages a la carte, this is hardly a splurge in the end. In fact, it may well offer you a value – it pays for itself after about 4 drinks.

Aulani Popcorn Bucket

If what you really crave is a snack instead of a drink, there’s a refillable option for that as well – popcorn buckets! They cost $10 for an initial purchase of a plastic bucket (that is shaped like a sandcastle pail) filled with popcorn. Subsequent refills are $3. We got a refill each and every day on our most recent trip and found it was a cheap and filling snack that several members of our family could share.

Best For: Parents who need caffeine, even in paradise. Hungry kids who are always asking for a snack.

9. Villa Upgrade

Disney Aulani One Bedroom Villa 2021

You can’t go wrong with any of the accommodations at Aulani. The larger villa accommodations at Aulani, however, offer a lot of amenities above and beyond regular rooms that may well be worth the upgrade.

Disney Aulani Splurges - Villa Living Room and Kitchen

My family has stayed in a one bedroom villa on two of our trips. Once you have experienced it, it’s hard to go back to the smaller hotel rooms or studio villas! A one bedroom villa has a full kitchen, stackable washer and dryer, separate sleeping area for the kids, an enormous bathroom with two sink areas and a separate shower and tub, and more.

VIDEO TOUR OF A ONE BEDROOM AULANI VILLA:

Of course, the price for this upgrade can be substantial. One bedroom villas regularly rent for $1000+ a night or more while a regular room is more like $600-700. But you can often save big bucks by taking advantage of seasonal sales or renting villa accommodations for less by renting DVC points  from a company like David’s Vacation Club Rentals . For even more of a splurge for larger families, there are two and three bedroom grand villas at Aulani too.

Best For: Families with 2+ kids, families with babies or toddlers who need a separate sleeping space to get rest.

10. Photopass

Disney Aulani Splurges - PhotoPass Lazy River Father Daughter

I always highly recommend Photopass to all Aulani visitors staying more than a night or two. Too many guests don’t realize Photopass is available just like at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. They discover it too late to take full advantage!

There are photographers all over Aulani (often at character meet and greets and even by or in the pools!) who will take shots of your family. They will give you a little card with a barcode to track your photos later. You can then purchase all the photos from your entire vacation for just $99. We actually found, however, on our most recent 2022 trip that if we loaded the photo card barcodes into the Disneyland app (Aulani’s app doesn’t have Photopass functionality), we could purchase one week Photopass for just $78!

Disney Aulani Splurges - Photopass Family Sunset Photos on Beach

How can you maximize PhotoPass even more? Sunset beach photos. I highly recommend going down to the beach in the hour before sunset. A couple of Photopass photographers are usually camped out there to take family portraits for no additional fee. We have managed on most trips to get a shot for our family Christmas card this way. (Be sure to be on the lookout for Photopass photographer Glenn from Okinawa – he takes amazing photos and has been there on several of our more recent trips!)

Best For: Everyone!

11. Aunty’s Beach House Premium Experiences

Aunty’s Beach House (Aulani’s “kids club”) isn’t yet back operating normally in 2022, so now may well be the time for a splurge for families who want a little more childcare coverage. Aunty’s Beach House currently admits kids ages 5-12 for one free 1.5 hour session per day. But Aunty’s Beach House also offers an additional 2 hour session per day for a fee on top of the regular programming.

Disney Aulani Splurges - Auntys Beach House Siblings Photopass

At $63 per child per two hour session, these premium experiences are very expensive but they do include a special activity and very nice souvenir. Characters come by for visits as well, and Photopass photographers capture images you’d never be able to get yourself (images are included in the cost of a general resort Photopass purchase). Currently three options are available: Kakamora Chaos with Moana, Becoming Sea Creatures, and SURF’S UP! A Surfin’, Fishin’, Dancin’ party.

The free activities book up almost the moment the Aunty’s Beach House reservations system opens 2 weeks in advance. But premium activities are available much more last minute because of the extra cost. So if you missed your chance to book free Aunty’s sessions, paying for some kids club time is a solid backup option. Or if you simply find your children love Aunty’s and they want to spend more time there, it’s nice the paid option usually has availability.

Auntys Beach House Aulani Entrance

Personally, I’d much prefer if Aunty’s would open for more free hours with more flexibility, as was the case in 2020 and earlier. But under the current system, paying a little extra is a hack that some families may find valuable.

Best For: Families with kids ages 5-12.

Honorable Mention: Cabana Rental

Probably the only extra my family hasn’t paid for at Aulani is a cabana rental. But I know a lot of friends who have tried them over the years and most rave about the experience. So it deserves a tip-of-the-hat in this honorable mention spot!

Poolside cabana rentals are a major splurge at $550 per day in 2022. They include a shaded area with seating for 7, a fridge, and complimentary water and fruit. Other private areas are available to rent as well, including the Executive Lanai ($350) and the ‘AMA’AMA veranda casabellas ($175-$250), with somewhat different amenities.

Aulani Executive Lanai

Who might find this splurge worthwhile? This is likely the best fit for guests who love spending a full day lounging by the pool but who don’t want to fight in the morning rat race over lounge chairs (which can be substantial!).

Cabana rentals may not be a good fit, however, for families with non-swimming kids. Most cabanas are tucked away in nooks and crannies far from view of the pools with the exception of the two right next to Menehune Bridge. If you want to keep an eye on little ones swimming for safety, the vantage points might not be ideal. On the other hand, for families with babies and very young toddlers, a cabana can be a perfect shaded place for little ones to nap without having to make a parent go back to the hotel room and miss out on afternoon fun.

Great article. I appreciate all the tips, especially the tip on photo pass and the rooms. I look forward to eventually making out to Aulani with my family. I book guests there and since I do not have personal experience with the property yet I appreciate finding good tips!

Hi, are the tattoos at the luau free to guests or an extra expense?

I think the upgrade is worth it. You get into the activities area before it gets super busy and you get much better seats. Also, the adults can make up a bit for the price difference with alcohol :p

For the luau, is it worth the extra charge to upgrade to the VIP? We're going for the first time later this year and I was wondering. Thanks for the great article!

Bevo with Mouse Ears

  • Oct 22, 2019

I am trying to get a cost comparison. We will either be doing 7 nights at Aulani or doing a cruise. It is fairly easy for me to determine my costs on a cruise, but I am totally lost on what to budget for Aulani. I am a DVC member so hotel costs are not a concern for me. I am expecting excursions on a cruise and an excursion from theresort are a wash. So, I am trying to figure out if daily food costs and other Aulani amenities would come in under the price of a cruise. Any opinions on this is greatly appreciated. BTW-we have doen Disney cruises a couple of times (loved them), but if we cruise this time, we will likely take a different liner. Thanks everyone.

disney cruise vs hawaii

Earning My Ears

Depending on how many people are in your group and how much your cruise costs, Aulani will probably be cheaper, especially if hotel costs aren't part of the consideration. The two big costs with Aulani are food and car rental. I would budget food costs similarly to what you spend in the parks. If you are signature dinning folks in the park, you can spend the same at 'Ama'Ama and the restaurants next door at Four Seasons. If you are counter services folks, you can go to Ulu or the ABC store across the street. Cocktails run around $15 each at the resort. Hawaii in general is more expensive than the mainland, but then so are the Disney Parks. Of course, if you have a 1 or 2 bedroom unit, you can go to Costco and save on food. But then you have to cook and clean up after yourselves, which can be a bummer on vacation, especially if its one person doing all the work. I recommend happy hour at Monkey Pod, with half price apps, $10 cocktails, and $10 pizzas. Cars rentals of course depend on the type of luxury you require, but for a week my experience is around $600 for a midrange vehicle. You don't have to pay for parking since you're DVC. The spa at Aulani is amazing and I highly recommend it. It is pricey, but comparable to spa services on the DCL .

alltwelve

Mouseketeer

We just completed a 4 night Disney Cruise (9/16-20) and had a 6-night stay at Aulani around the same time last year. Aulani was significantly cheaper than the cruise, however, we had a 1-bedroom and mainly prepared meals in our villa, dining out just a couple of times. We rented a convertible for the week, and even with that cost and our flights, the cruise was more than double the cost of Aulani, once all expenses were factored in, and it wasn't as long as the Aulani trip. That being said, there's only two of us, so we only had to buy 2 plane tickets and prepare meals for two while at Aulani. We live close enough to Port Canaveral that plane tickets aren't required for us for cruising. If you are going with a different cruise line, both trips may end up being closer in price, as DCL cruises are more than other cruise lines. You may need to do a spreadsheet on it to figure it out.

  • Oct 23, 2019

I have been to neither (going to Aulani for the first time in a couple weeks!), but I was bouncing this idea around for quite a while. We were looking at Disney Cruise or Aulani and ultimately decided with Aulani mainly because we were able to rent points at a significant discount. We have a family of four, which impacts the price of the cruise, but an Aulani room price is fixed. Here are some of the questions that I needed to answer myself. 1. What value do I put in a room? We were comparing a verandah room vs a 1 bedroom. Renting DVC for the 1 bedroom for 4 beats any verandah cruise way out of the water. It probably will still come out cheaper than a porthole room. 2. How much are flights? We live on the west coast, so flying out to Hawaii vs flying out to Orlando was essentially a wash. San Diego was an option as well, but their cruises are significantly more expensive, which came close to covering flights. 3. Flexibility of schedule? We have two kids, with one in school, we prefer our DD to not miss school, so that severely limited what cruises we were open to taking. 4. Over all price. Hopefully this actually answer your question (I realized my first three points probably didn't address your questions at all). Since you are a DVC member, I would highly recommend you consider renting a car since your parking is free. We have a 6 day intermediate car rental in early Nov for $210. Food wise, we are not particularly drawn to the food at Aulani. We will probably grab some snacks and maybe try to budget in a Luau (a huge expense), but otherwise we plan on going to the Foodland (local Hawaiian supermarket) and Costco. We also love Hawaii and will explore restaurants outside the resort. We also plan on cooking most of our breakfast (macadamia nut pancake mix from Foodland). According to my own calculations, going on a DCL (so pricing might be different for you), the extra cost between cruising and Aulani was about $100 per person per night. We do not anticipate spending $400 a day on food. Essentially this is what it looked like for me. (Cruise cost + tips, tax, etc) / (how long the cruise is) = price of the cruise per day. This price came out to be about $800ish per day for us (because we have 4). (Aulani DVC rental aka total cost + car rental) / (number of days) = price of alumni per day. Pretty straight forward. We scored a 1 bedroom with rental for about $435 a day. Aulani was cheaper by $365 a day for us. Compound that by 4 nights, it is a difference of $1460. I feel like $1460 for 5 days and 4 nights is more than enough for us. I am sure I just rambled and not sure how much I helped but since I already typed it all... I hope it helps a little!

Last chance to lose your keys.

Food can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be at Aulani. If you do not have a rental car and are not willing to get groceries, you can expect it to be pricey because you'll be relegated to the pricey meals at Aulani and tourist-priced restaurants across the street. If you have a rental car, it gives you the flexibility to eat at more affordable local places around the island while you're out exploring. You can also pickup groceries, since you'll have a kitchen staying DVC. I don't recall what we spent during our time at Aulani, but we did have snack items, bottled water, and quick/easy things for some breakfasts and some lunches. We roughly priced out the cruise versus island hopping on our own, and it came out cheaper for us to do it on our own, and it also gave us more flexibility. Because of that, I would also agree that a week at Aulani would be cheaper. ETA: I assumed you were looking at NCL's Pride of America cruise around Hawaii versus a week at Aulani? Or are you comparing a cruise somewhere in the Caribbean versus Aulani? I assumed you meant the Hawaiian cruise, but would probably add different comments if you're looking at a cruise in the Caribbean or somewhere else. For us, flying from the east coast, the cost to get to Hawaii is the most expensive part. We could easily fly to Fort Lauderdale or Miami to get on a cruise ship for a fraction of the cost, so in that case, it would likely be cheaper to do a cruise.

Oh yah, and one last thing. Hook em horns!

DIS Veteran

I have been to Aulani twice and a cruise once. I am also a DVC member. For me, its Aulani all the way. We are doing a Royal Caribbean cruise this winter to break it up a bit but the cost of going to Hawaii is much less than the cost of a Disney cruise in my opinion. If you are looking for things to do look at the go Oahu card. For one price you get to do basically everything that you might want to do and its far less expensive than Disney cruise shore excursions are. The big expense in Hawaii is food but it all depends on what you want to ear, if you want to eat at Aulani everyday then you will spend a fortune on food

We are DVC and I was recently researching this very thing! We were either doing Aulani for 8 nights or a Royal Caribbean for 7 nights. Aulani won out b/c we get a 2 br where we can all stay in one room for considerably less than 2 separate smaller rooms on the ship.

cgattis

Wanted to add you can basically consider the rental car cost as your “excursion” cost; there is plenty to do for free on Oahu. And ditto to what everyone else has said on food. But most importantly....Roll Tide!! (And if you’re still reading LOL, it was fun to go to Aloha Stadium and take a short tour.)

We go to Aulani a lot more than we ever thought we would when we first bought our DVC there. We bought BLT first and had planned to do Aulani maybe every 3 years due to the cost of getting our family there. However, we were told about the Alaska Airlines card and we now get two companion fares per year (my husband and I each got one), so we have found that Aulani is even cheaper than going to WDW for us when you factor in flights, park tickets, and food. We do normally get a 2 bedroom and usually eat breakfast in the room and maybe one other meal depending on what we are doing each day. We eat one meal out per day for sure and sometimes two. We don't really pay for excursions at Aulani and have found many things we love doing that are free. I also rent a vehicle as early as possible and just keep watching for a drop in price which happens quite a bit. We do DCL cruises often too, and although they are expensive, we LOVE them! It's always a hard toss up when trying to decide between the cruises and Aulani for us, but Aulani seems to be more bang for the buck overall.

I would love to see a Disney Hawaii cruise. I bet it will happen once the new ships are built - they'll put one of the older ones on a Hawaii itinerary. Especially with Aulani, it would be shocking if they didn't!

Hello everyone ... bit of a strange question, but here it is:

Any thoughts/comments ???

' class=

They went So Cal, Disneyland, Unversal San Deigo and some other SoCal sites. Had a great time. If you like rides and such, that's a good place.

Best time the kids had - a little older than yours - was at Colonial Kantenah Palladium in Akumal MX. It's an all inclusive resort and they had all kinds of freedom there and had a blast. West back a second time. Prices were so good that they had adjoining rooms so they could have a bit of privacy. Very, very cost effective for a high end AI. Only complaint was a lack of watersports equipment. Said food was excellent as was service.

If you do HI, consider condo rentals. It will get you a lot more for the money, unless fantasy pools are your thing and then you'll need a high end resort. It's been awhile, but I'd say Maui had the most to do while still keeping the some level of tropical island feel. Enough so I'm staying 10 in Dec.

Do look at the cost of things like snorkel trips, whale watching, luau's etc as that can run a huge tab really fast. [I'm a tad shocked at just how high and I'm used to prices in the Caribbean!] You might want to start there. I know folks on the Orlando board wail about Disney's prices, but they'd be stunned at some of the $$$'s for various excursions and such in Hawaii and they last a matter of hours.

They loved snorkeling and the Sheraton pool the most. We stayed in Maui for 7 nights and then stoped in Los Angeles on the way home.

We enjoyed Disneyland (1 day) and a weekend in San Diego.

It was a lot of travelling, but the children didn't complain. We are planning to return to Hawaii next summer. We plan to go to Kauai and Maui. In Kauai we will rent a small cottage and in Maui we will be staying free at a hotel on points.

Last summer, we kept costs down in Hawaii by not going on any organized tours. We also did bagels and yogurt from Safeway for breakfast.

I think they would love Hawaii, but how about stopping over in

LA for a couple of days if the kids really will miss the Disney magic .

Also, I think the whales will be gone if your visiting in May.

disney cruise vs hawaii

Hawaii is not that hard to plan for. Check out some books and this website and you will be all set.

disney cruise vs hawaii

If your kids LOVE DL and DW like my kids do, then check out hotels like the Grand Wailea , Kaanapali Hyatt, and Marriott (timeshare but you can get rooms thru redweek) as these family oriented Maui resorts have the thrill factors like DL rides with awesome pools with waterslides, waterfalls, swim up bars....GW has the only water elevator in the world plus tarzan ropes into the pool, volleyball, trampoline on the ocean and a great camp for kids. May is a great time to go since it won't be as crowded too!

If you're on a tighter budget or want to see more of the island as we do, stay at an oceanfront condo near Kaanapali, Napili or Kihei - there's sooo many nice o.f .condo's with full kitchens and a washer and dryer! ;) The kids can learn to surf, go snorkling, go hiking, zipline, horseback riding, there's lots of historical and educational stuff for the kids to learn.... it isn't too hard to plan if you use this site and lots of fun stuff for the kids like the beaches are free. Use Mauiinfosource.com and get the Maui Revealed book, great info.

I too have the thinking, "why go somewhere we've already been" but I am missing DL very much, the week after Thanksgiving is our favorite time to go with no crowds and all the Christmas decorations up and the parade with snow, soo magical, BUT I know Maui will be a magical paradise all on it's own.

Next on our family vacation list is the Hilton Waikoloa on the Big Island - they have a dolphin quest where the kids can play/swim with the dolphins. Now, that's magical! Show your kids that it's fun to explore a new place, I'm sure you'll have fun in Maui! Good luck!

Polynesian Cultural center has the best Polynesian entertainment in all of Hawaii .

Bishop Museum now has a volcano house where kids can create volcanoes & tidal waves.

USS Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri & USS Bowfin are educational.

Hanauma Bay is great for snorkeling. They have a film that is educational.

Iolani Palace is the only palace in the U.S.

Climb Diamond Head.

Hike to waterfalls.

Honolulu has a nice Chinatown.

Lots of info:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g29222-i37-k647862-Things_not_to_miss_for_a_trip_of_a_lifetime-Oahu_Hawaii.html

There's so many choices, you can't go wrong. Did your kids go to the water parks at Disney World?? We only went to the 4 theme parks and missed the water parks but loved the pools at the Grand Floridian. If your kids loved the DW waterparks, they'll probably love GW. I miss Mickey now ;(........

I think Hawaii would be more relaxing than DL or DW, esp if you don't overbook yourself with activities and you make time to go to the beaches. With DW/DL, there's always a show or parade to get to on time, lines to get on rides, lines to get food, lines to go to the bathroom...I'm sure Maui has its shares of lines but it's probably not as bad. Aloha!

Honolulu is and Waikiki is part of Honolulu.

Away from Honolulu there are many rural areas and isolated beaches.

Hawaiian Adventures Waterpark is another activity for kids on Oahu. It's a good waterpark.

Sea Life Park is another place. But, compared to a Sea World, Sea Life Park is not much.

He has swam with sting rays and Dolphins, snorkled with too many tropical fish to name, learned hawaiian customs and traditions and to respect to ocean, boogie boarded and learned to surf. Been to the top of a volcano and paddled an outrigger canoe. He's an expert in the ocean and loves the islands.

I was ten the first time I visited Hawaii and will never forget it. If you have a chance to travel to Hawaii I would do it. You can always go to Disneyland. Who knows if our chi8ldren will be able to travel there when they are older.

Maui and Disney are totally different vacations, though. I love DisneyWorld, but I always return wishing I had a few more days off to relax. Maui is slower paced, which is fine for adults, but kids tend to want to get to the next thing.

Cruise vs. all-inclusive resort: Which budget-friendly option is best for you?

All Inclusive Cruise

Travelers looking for an easy vacation, with accommodations and activities bundled into one package price, often compare cruises and all-inclusive resorts to find their ideal trip. On a cruise ship or at a resort, you've got restaurants, bars, activities, entertainment and kids clubs all in one place, saving you from doing loads of research for every aspect of your trip. Even better, many (or all) of these amenities are included in the upfront price, helping make these vacation types budget-friendly.

Sure, you can choose pricey luxury cruise lines or upscale resorts , but when you book a cruise or all-inclusive resort, you can rest easy knowing you're getting the convenience of an all-in-one vacation without a ton of extra expenses.

The question then becomes: Which vacation type is better for you, a cruise or an all-inclusive resort? The answer depends on which sorts of things you want included in your base price and which ones you'd rather purchase a la carte. Additionally, what type of trip you're looking to take matters.

To help you decide which option is best for you, you'll first need to understand which activities and amenities cruises and all-inclusive resorts actually cover in their base rates. Then, you can compare the similarities and differences before picking between the two.

For more travel tips and news, sign up for our daily newsletter .

Cruises: What's included?

disney cruise vs hawaii

Cruises are often pegged as all-inclusive vacations, but exactly what is included varies by cruise line and cabin type . When pricing out a cruise vacation, you'll need to know the details of what your line covers in everyone's fares and what add-ons you can buy to make your trip more inclusive.

Let's start with the basics. All cruise fares on any major cruise line include accommodations with en suite bathrooms; meals in select restaurants (typically a large main dining room and a buffet venue, plus perhaps a few other eateries); basic drinks (tap water, coffee, hot and iced tea, milk and select juice at breakfast); use of pools, hot tubs, lounge chairs and fitness equipment; kids clubs and programming; and some kinds of daytime and evening entertainment.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Whether you're sailing mass-market Carnival Cruise Line or ultra-luxe Regent Seven Seas Cruises, your base fare will include the aforementioned items.

High-priced luxury cruise lines will typically also include a large selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, gratuities for the crew, Wi-Fi access and meals in smaller, themed restaurants. However, this isn't always the case.

To see how inclusions vary, let's take a look at a few examples.

Royal Caribbean is a big-ship line that caters to couples and families. Its entry-level fares cover just the basics mentioned above. You might find discounted rates and free kids fares (when sharing a cabin with two paying adults), but it is not known for throwing in freebies like Wi-Fi or tips unless you book a suite.

Royal Caribbean's Royal Suite-class fares are more inclusive than standard fares. Book a Sky-class suite and you'll receive free Wi-Fi for each guest, room service and meals in the exclusive Coastal Kitchen restaurant, as well as access to a lounge with complimentary evening drinks and snacks. Book a Star-class suite and you'll get even more fare inclusions, such as meals in all specialty restaurants, a Deluxe beverage package (including booze, soda and premium coffee drinks), minibar items, tips and laundry.

Related: 5 things I love about Royal Caribbean's new suite neighborhood — and 3 that need work

Norwegian Cruise Line takes a different route. Its "Free at Sea" promotions (which seem to run continuously these days) allow everyone to make their base fares more inclusive, depending on which version of the sale is running. At press time, the fare inclusions for the first two guests per room extended to free airfare, Wi-Fi, a beverage package and excursion and specialty dining credits. (Third and fourth guests sail free and therefore don't receive the additional inclusions.) Sometimes the deal includes fewer freebies or offers fewer inclusions with the cheaper cabins.

A luxury line like Regent Seven Seas Cruises, arguably the most inclusive cruise line , always covers airfare and transfers, shore excursions, pre-cruise hotel stays, all beverages (except the most ultra-premium bottles), Wi-Fi, gratuities, dining in all onboard restaurants and laundry service.

Additionally, many cruise lines offer all-inclusive beverage packages or specialty dining packages as add-ons to your cruise fare to make the rate more inclusive. Some lines have inclusion packages that combine a few things. For example, Windstar Cruises charges an extra $79 per person per day ($89 if purchased on board and not pre-cruise) for included Wi-Fi, drinks and tips.

Related: How to get free or cheap drinks on a cruise

If you're trying to assess the value of a cruise fare, especially as compared with another cruise line or an all-inclusive resort, you'll need to look at which vacation activities you'll be doing and tally up your all-in vacation cost. Less-inclusive cruise lines will be cheaper to book initially, but high onboard spending could make the trip cost more than a more-inclusive line with pricier base fares. Or, you may love the idea of included cocktails, wine and beer, but if you don't drink multiple alcoholic beverages each day, you may find that you'd spend less purchasing drinks a la carte.

All-inclusive resorts: What's included?

disney cruise vs hawaii

It's not just a clever name. The upfront price you pay when you book a stay at an all-inclusive resort is, for the most part, all-inclusive. While there certainly are amenities and experiences you can add to enhance your stay, the price you see when you click "Book Now" is the price you get.

Typically, this means your accommodations, a fully stocked minibar, meals, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, kids club access, nonmotorized water sports and daily entertainment are included in the upfront cost. If you want to visit the spa, have a romantic dinner on the beach or reserve a cabana (with or without bottle service), you'll have to pay extra.

Related: 8 lessons I learned from my 1st all-inclusive vacation

Among the amenities that are included, you are not relegated to just one bar and dining establishment to frequent during your stay. Most all-inclusive resorts have multiple food and beverage outlets and often shops where you can grab coffee and ice cream as well. You'll also be treated to entertainment and activities throughout the day and into the evening, and most resorts offer a decent mix of family-friendly and adult-oriented activities .

For example, if you are most interested in an all-inclusive tropical beach escape, Hilton's all-inclusive properties in Mexico and the Caribbean have a variety of dining options to choose from, as well as multiple pools, fitness facilities, kayaks and paddleboards, daytime games and activities, and live entertainment come nighttime.

If you prefer hitting the slopes to lounging seaside, all-inclusive ski resorts offer a similar pricing structure in a different environment. Accommodations may be in a rustic-style lodge, private cabin or traditional hotel room. While there may be fewer dining options, meals are typically more artfully prepared than at a massive beachfront resort. Activities include skiing and all-terrain-vehicle rides in winter and horseback riding and mountain biking in summer.

Related: Why I loved my 1st all-inclusive hotel experience

What may not be included are gratuities for servers, bartenders, housekeepers and the porter who delivers your luggage to the room. Some brands, like Sandals and Beaches, expressly state that their employees cannot accept tips, but this is not true of every all-inclusive resort. You may be able to find this information on the resort's website, by reading reviews or by calling ahead to ask so you can be prepared with cash (in the correct currency) for tipping during your trip.

It's also important to keep in mind that unlike booking a standard hotel room, the cost of your all-inclusive trip will vary based on the number of guests. You must enter the exact number of children and adults to get an accurate price — and yes, we learned this the hard way .

Related: Tips for booking hotel rooms for large families

When choosing whether an all-inclusive resort vacation is the right choice for your budget, you can rest assured that the price you see when you make your reservation will get you a bed to sleep in, meals to eat and plenty to keep you busy during your stay. What you may want to consider is whether you will take advantage of all those included offerings and if the resort you're interested in has the kind of food, activities and entertainment you'll enjoy.

Cruises vs. all-inclusive resorts: The travel adviser perspective

To truly compare these two similar-yet-different vacation options, TPG turned to John Lovell , president of Travel Leaders Group. Lovell has more than two decades of experience as a travel industry executive and not only advises others on travel, but is an avid traveler himself.

Related: 4 scenarios when you should use a travel agent

disney cruise vs hawaii

If you are currently in the midst of choosing between a cruise and an all-inclusive vacation, Lovell assured us that both options are "open and honest about what they are going to charge you for."

While there may be upcharges for Wi-Fi, excursions or fine dining, providers tend to be upfront and transparent about those costs. Hidden costs shouldn't be an issue, but you do need to do some research prior to your trip so you have a good idea of what's included in the cost and what may be an add-on.

"If you are going on a seven-day cruise, for example, adding a drink package and excursions at each port can add hundreds of dollars to your budget," Lovell said. "If you are comparing one cruise line to another, and one claims to be $799 for a week and another is $599 but doesn't include Wi-Fi or a drink package, the $799 may actually be a better deal."

Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

There isn't as much variance at all-inclusive resorts unless you are partial to top-shelf liquors and beachfront massages.

So which is a better value? The short answer is: "It depends."

"Both cruising and all-inclusive resorts offer wonderful experiences," Lovell said. "You can do a budget-friendly cruise and have a wonderful experience and you can do the same thing at an all-inclusive."

They both offer great experiences, but it really comes down to identifying what you want out of your vacation and finding a cruise or all-inclusive resort that offers it.

"In addition to working with a travel adviser who is an expert on both types of trips, the best thing a consumer can do is decide what they want out of a trip," Lovell said.

Bottom line

If you are looking for an opportunity to visit multiple destinations without having to pack and unpack at each stop, a cruise vacation may best suit your needs. You'll need to be OK with some vacation days spent entirely on the ship at sea and smaller accommodations, as cruise cabins tend to be smaller than hotel rooms at similar price points. As mentioned earlier, some lines are more inclusive than others, so you may end up with more additional expenses than at an all-inclusive resort.

If you are looking for a family-friendly beach vacation where you can spend time with your kids but also drop them off at the kids club when you need a little quiet time, an all-inclusive resort may be your best choice. You will need to be fine with multiple days on the same beach (versus visiting different destinations), and you'll want to be mindful of the fact that you'll likely need to pay extra if you want to explore beyond the resort's gates and experience the local culture.

Once you've determined your personalized vacation needs, all that's left to do is to find the cruise or all-inclusive resort that offers what you are looking for and do the math to get the true total cost of your vacation. You'll be lounging with a drink in hand in no time.

My family went on a $6,000 Disney World vacation and a $5,900 Disney Cruise, and the latter was a much better deal

  • My family of four recently went on a Disney World vacation and took a Disney cruise.
  • On the Disney cruise, we got to see different places and explore new countries.
  • The vacations cost about the same amount of money, but the cruise was a better value.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , clients often ask me if I prefer Disney cruises or Disney World vacations.

My family did a split trip where we spent four days at Disney World and four days on the Disney Wish, which gave me a great insight into the differences between the two options.

Here's why I think the cruise was a much better value.

We started our trip at Disney World with fun in the theme parks.

disney cruise vs hawaii

While in Orlando, we stayed at our favorite resort , Yacht Club, which has easy access to both Hollywood Studios and Epcot.

Throughout the trip, we explored all four parks by purchasing park-hopper tickets, and my family had a blast riding our favorite rides, eating with characters, and shopping for souvenirs.

It was a jam-packed four days, and they were long. We woke up early to get to the parks and returned to our hotel late after the nighttime shows.

After factoring in our hotel stay, park-hopper tickets, and all our meals, our total came to $6,000.

We loved the theme-park vacation as much as always, but we were excited to get to the next part of our trip.

After visiting the parks, we boarded the Disney Wish for a four-night Bahamian cruise.

disney cruise vs hawaii

Stepping aboard the Wish for the first time was breathtaking.

As Disney's newest ship, it's filled with exquisite designs and unmatched attention to detail. It also looked impeccably maintained and offered classic Disney service.

As we settled in and explored the ship , characters greeted us around every corner, which added to the magic.

Our four-night cruise in a deluxe family ocean-view stateroom with a veranda cost $5,900, including meals.

Throughout our cruise, we experienced so much of what the ship had to offer.

disney cruise vs hawaii

Disney Cruise Line has an app named Disney Cruise Navigator that shares all the daily activities. Most are complimentary, and there's always something to do .

My kids hung out in the kids' clubs, saw movies, and played at the pool and gym. As a family, we saw Broadway-caliber shows, participated in family trivia, and ate at fun restaurants (including a Marvel dining experience and "Frozen" dinner show).

While our kids were supervised, my husband and I enjoyed the adults-only lounges and activities.

disney cruise vs hawaii

The kids were supervised when they hung out in the club, so my husband was able to do a fun beer tasting, and we both loved doing a wine tasting .

My favorite adventure was enjoying a massage at the Senses Spa, followed by a great glass of wine at the Rose Lounge.

There's also the adults-only Quiet Cove Infinity Pool, where you can have a drink or read a book, and adults-only brunch and dinner available at Palo or Enchanté.

At Disney World, it's almost impossible for us to appreciate adults-only activities when we're with our kids .

You can hire a babysitter or seek out the kids' club at Camp Dolphin inside the Dolphin Hotel . But these services aren't included in your stay, and I find them much more difficult to arrange.

Another great perk of the cruise was getting to explore different places.

disney cruise vs hawaii

Disney Cruise Line has itineraries all over the world including Alaska, Europe, Hawaii , and the Caribbean. On this trip, we visited Nassau in the Bahamas and Disney's private island, Castaway Cay.

We also took a day trip to the Atlantis resort, and my kids had a blast at the water park .

Castaway Cay offers a relaxing and fun beach day. We snorkeled, built sand castles, ate a delicious barbecue lunch, and basked in the sun.

The cruise ended up being more affordable, and I think it was a better value overall.

disney cruise vs hawaii

A Disney Cruise might look pricier on the surface, but after we factored in the cost of meals and drinks at Disney World, the value of the cruise was more apparent.

Plus, the number of activities offered — for both kids and adults — made for a relaxing and fun experience.

If you haven't experienced a Disney Cruise , I highly recommend it.

Disney World vs Disney Cruise: Which is better?

castle at disney world

If you’re wondering whether to go on a Disney cruise or visit Walt Disney World, this post is for you! I’ll compare and contrast the two experiences and help you decide which one is right for your family.

Both the cruise and the parks are magical experiences, but there are some key differences that may make one better suited for your needs. In the article below, we will compare the costs, planning processes, activities, and more between Disney World and a Disney Cruise to find out which vacation is the better option!

Cost of Disney Cruise vs Disney World

One of the main questions I get asked when comparing Disney World to a Disney cruise is which is the cheaper vacation . The short answer is that it totally depends since the prices of both vacations are influenced by the time of year you travel. In other words, you can’t compare a Disney Cruise over Christmas break with a trip to Disney World in February. Obviously the cruise would cost quite a bit more during the peak holiday time.

Disney Magic Cruise Ship

Therefore, for the sake of this article, we will compare the prices for a Disney cruise vs those for Disney World over four nights in mid-May since this is when my family prefers to travel. Now, let’s break down the different items you purchase for Disney World and a Disney cruise to determine which is cheaper:

Accommodations and Dining

When you reserve a cruise with DCL , you usually choose your stateroom at the time of booking. You can pick a cabin with no windows, one with an ocean view window, or one with a balcony. (You could also splurge and book a suite and cruise in the Concierge Level.) Each of these room levels is priced differently. And, with a few exceptions, your meals are included in the price of your Disney cruise.

So, the majority of your cruise costs are paid in one lump sum ahead of time. My family and I tend to sail in staterooms with a verandah because we love having the private outdoor space. Similarly, we usually book rooms at deluxe resorts at Disney World since they typically offer balconies and upgraded amenities. Therefore, we will be comparing the prices for a verandah stateroom with a deluxe hotel room.

Disney’s Beach Club Resort Pool

(If you’re looking to save money on your trip, you could always compare the prices of a value hotel at Disney World with an inside cruise cabin on a Disney ship as they would be more comparable.) Also note that when you compare the price of a Disney World vacation to a Disney cruise, you will want to include your WDW hotel cost plus the price of your meals to get a fair estimate. That’s because your cruise fare includes your room and the cost of food.

disney cruise concierge stateroom

So, let’s say a 4-night cruise for my family of four is priced at around $4500. This rate includes my stateroom and meals onboard. A 4 night stay in a deluxe hotel at Disney World would roughly cost $500 per night at $2000 total. But, after you add on say $300 per day for food, this total cost becomes $3200 for WDW.

In other words, when comparing accommodations and food, I would estimate $4500 for a Disney Cruise and $3200 for Disney World . Clearly Disney World is the winner here, but this doesn’t give a fair estimation of the vacation price. That’s because we need to calculate all the extras you will be paying for each vacation.

Tickets and Extra Costs

If you are visiting Disney World with your family, you more than likely plan to purchase park tickets . Although kids are free if they are under 3 years old, you will need a park ticket for each guest over age three. If you plan to visit each of the Disney World theme parks, the price of your vacation can really add up.

For the sake of this article, we will budget for park tickets for our family of four visiting one park each day (no Park Hopper). At the time of this writing, 4 tickets to each Disney park costs just over $2400.

Epcot

Now, a Disney Cruise Line vacation also features additional items you will want to include in your budget. These include things like excursions and gratuities. We won’t go into a ton of detail here on tipping since you can read all about the set amounts in our post on calculating Disney Cruise Line gratuities . But, a family of four on a 4-night cruise can expect to pay around $232 for gratuities.

As for excursions, let’s say the ship is visiting Nassau and Castaway Cay. We will budget for $400 in Nassau and $0 on Castaway Cay since the beach there is free. If you’re still with me, that means the extra costs associated with cruising and WDW are around $2400 for Disney World and $632 for a Disney Cruise .

Castaway Cay

When adding it all together, that puts us at a grand total of $5600 for a Disney World vacation compared to $5132 for a Disney cruise . In other words, the two vacations are pretty similar in price depending on the room type and extras you choose to purchase.

Disney World vs Disney Cruise: Planning

Anyone who has ever visited Disney World knows that the planning process for your WDW vacation is a really big deal. Walt Disney World is FULL of amazing rides and entertainment options! You could arrive at a park at opening, stay until closing, and still not see or do everything offered. Plus, there are so many things to do at Disney World outside the parks!

magic kingdom castle

Additionally, the dining options are endless at Walt Disney World. All sorts of restaurants are available from chains to pubs to fine dining to character meals. Since reservations are needed for most of the popular restaurants , you do need to make sure to book these in advance.

I say all of that to show just how many aspects go into planning a Disney World vacation. Not only do you have to choose your dates and your hotel, but you also need to make the following decisions:

  • which parks to visit
  • what types of tickets to buy
  • when to visit each park
  • whether to secure the new Disney Genie+ service
  • when to schedule dining reservations
  • how to create touring itineraries for each park to fit in each attraction

In contrast, when you plan a Disney cruise vacation, you don’t really have to do a lot of pre-planning compared to Disney World. Initially, you just book the Disney cruise and sign up for your dining time. Once online check-in is available for your trip, you can schedule a few activities, but most of the entertainment options do not require tickets or reservations. These are some of the activities you’ll find onboard:

  • water slides
  • Broadway style shows
  • cooking classes
  • arts and crafts

In addition, you can experience fun activities on Castaway Cay and Lighthouse Point, which are Disney’s private islands in the Bahamas. These tropical paradises are as amazing as you are probably imagining! They provide crystal clear water, character meet and greets, and family friendly excursions!

pool with yellow water slide on Disney magic cruise ship

Unlike Walt Disney World, you do not need reservations for dining on the cruise ship unless you choose to spend extra money and eat in one of the specialty, adult-only restaurants. Rather than booking a time for meals each day like at Disney World, you just show up at your restaurant of choice for breakfast and lunch. For dinner, you are assigned a time and a restaurant, so it really takes all the guesswork out.

As you can probably tell, planning a Disney Cruise Line vacation is much easier than planning a trip to Walt to Disney World . After booking your cruise, you’re not really left with a ton of things to do.

Disney Cruise and Disney World Package

Many families have a difficult time deciding between the two vacations, so they combine them together! Although Disney does not offer deals or discounts on land and sea packages, you would save money on flights if you were already in the area. This brings up a common question: Should you do the Disney Cruise before or after parks?

Often times families sailing out of Port Canaveral (or even Miami) choose to add days at Disney World onto their vacation. But you may be wondering if it’s better to cruise before the theme parks vacation or after it? If you choose to cruise first, you will have the Disney parks to look forward to on the last day of your Disney cruise.

Disney Cruise Line Terminal in Port Canaveral

This helps make the final day of your cruise a little less sad. In addition, when you visit Disney World after a cruise, you don’t have to worry about rushing to catch a flight home on debarkation day.

On the other hand, if you decide to visit Disney World BEFORE your cruise, you get the more stressful vacation out of the way. Your family can spend time enjoying the theme parks first. Then you can end the combined vacation on a relaxing note. In addition, you will want to arrive near the cruise port at least the day before you set sail. So, if you are getting a hotel room anyway, you may as well book one at Walt Disney World!

Disney Cruise vs Disney World with a Toddler

If you are planning a Disney family vacation with a toddler, you will want to consider your little one’s interests when determining whether a Disney cruise or WDW trip is better. That being said, the vibe of each vacation is quite different, and my family personally finds the cruises to be much more toddler friendly.

A Disney cruise vacation feels more relaxing, and you don’t have the added stresses of Disney World. Once you are on the ship, you don’t have to worry about boarding shuttles to get to activities or restaurants. Instead, you just take the stairs or the elevators to each deck to find pools, restaurants, shops, or entertainment.

Chip and Dale dressed as pirates

In addition, a Disney Cruise Line vacation confines your family to the ship, which really helps when members of your travel party want to experience different activities. My husband and I have two kids who are five years apart in age. Since my younger daughter is a toddler, her older sister obviously has a different schedule and other interests. On the Disney cruise, it’s easy to walk back to the room with our toddler for a nap or bedtime without disrupting our older child’s activities.

However, at Disney World, you would have to grab a shuttle back to the hotel in order to put your toddler to bed. Also, some toddlers are a bit leery of rides at Disney World, but they tend to enjoy meeting characters. Popular Disney characters are all over the cruise ship, and the lines for meet and greets are WAY shorter than those at Disney World.

Final Thoughts: Disney World or Disney Cruise

So, which is the better vacation? It really depends on your family and their interests. My husband likes to say that Disney World is a trip and not a vacation. It is true that it’s not the most relaxing place to visit, but we still love it! Disney World offers so many activities, shows, and experiences that you just can’t beat.

A Disney cruise, on the other hand, is totally laid back and easy. The cast members cater to every need that your child has, so parents get to enjoy themselves too! Either way, Disney knows how to provide a great time so you really can’t make a bad choice!

Minnie Mouse and water slide with text overlay Disney World vs Disney Cruise Which is Better

Also, depending on the cruise itinerary that you book, the Disney ship may even stop in Port Canaveral, Florida. If this is the case, you can purchase Disney World tickets as your excursion. A Disney shuttle will pick you up at the cruise port and drive your family to Walt Disney World. You will get to enjoy the park(s) for the day before catching the bus back to Port Canaveral.

Disney Cruise Line names its newest cruise ship

I t was bound to happen sometime, but Disney Cruise Line waited until its last of three new sister ships to name one Disney Destiny.

The sister ship to Disney Wish, which debuted out of Port Canaveral in 2022 and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure arriving in Central Florida this December, the third ship in what was originally called the Trident class had its keel laying ceremony Wednesday at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

It won’t start sailing until 2025, and its home port has yet to be named, but among the details revealed for what will be the eighth ship in the cruise line’s fleet was the theme of the vessel, “Heroes & Villains.”

As such, the filigree artwork for the bow will be of Minnie Mouse wearing a superhero-style outfit complete with a cape.

The cruise line said among the characters from which it will mine features on board will be classic Disney animation films, “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney of course owns plenty of good vs. evil intellectual property including Star Wars and Marvel.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager for the cruise line, in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising.”

Just like Disney Wish and Treasure, Disney Destiny will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

All three are the 144,000 gross-ton, 1,254-stateroom vessels but still targeting the 4,000-passenger capacity of its older ships, 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Fantasy. The line’s first ships are the smaller Disney Magic that debuted in 1998 and Disney Wonder in 1999. They come in at 84,000 gross tons with 875 staterooms.

The line also is finishing construction for an Asia-bound cruise ship named Disney Adventure that will be the largest in the fleet at 208,000 gross tons.

Disney Wish became the line’s first new ship in more than a decade. It continues to do short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings while Disney Treasure will pick up seven-night trips to the Caribbean.
