10 Virtual Science Field Trip Ideas Your Kids Will Love

Field trips are great fun. But maybe you live in an extremely rural town that doesn’t have many options for field trips. Perhaps travel restrictions won’t allow you to travel to walk the Great Wall of China. And let’s face it: budget constraints just don’t always permit us to hop on a plane to New York to see the Metropolitan Museum of Art or tour Ellis Island. And as much as we might love it, we just can’t take a stroll on the surface of Mars yet.

10 Virtual Science Field Trip Ideas Kids Will Love

Why Should You Take Homeschool Field Trips?

We love using books to teach science (and every other subject). But the hands-on application of book knowledge helps our kids retain the information. The “reading + video + hands-on experience” formula we use at Journey Homeschool Academy ensures that children with all learning styles are able to benefit from our courses.

A field trip allows you and your children to experience various aspects of science, history, art, and culture in ways that you don’t normally encounter in your everyday life. Field trips for kids can shake up their routine and provide wonderful jumping-off points for discussion. Exploring the world may even lead your children to develop new hobbies and interests.

Why Virtual Field Trips?

Travel is wonderful, and we encourage educational travel whenever possible! But when travel for discovery and education isn’t possible, virtual field trips are here to save the day.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 restrictions in March of 2020, many museums, zoos, and even parks have made it possible to experience virtual tours of their property. Several destinations have live video tours on a regular basis as well.

This list is only the tip of the iceberg of available virtual field trips focusing specifically on science. Typing the name of your desired tour destination plus “virtual tour” into Google will yield a wealth of results in many cases. The options are truly endless!

1. Tour the Shadowy Forests in Finland

UPM Forest Life’s website allows viewers to learn more about forestry through an interactive experience. If you stay on the prerecorded paths, you can click to learn more about each bird you hear or bug you see. You can also select a specific topic to learn about, such as picking mushrooms or a specific species of plant or animal.

2. Take a Hike at Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park Virtual Science Field Trip

There’s no substitute for actually standing in Yellowstone and experiencing its wildlife and beauty for yourself. But the National Park Service has filmed many virtual walking tours of Yellowstone if you’re not able to visit in real life. You can watch hikes to Dragon’s Mouth Spring, Lookout Point, and the Upper Falls at their website.

3. National Geographic Tours

Known for their National Geographic has a ton of options for homeschool virtual field trips. You can learn more about the oceans and even the solar system .

4. Walk on the Surface of Mars

If you ever feel like escaping the world altogether, maybe a stroll on the surface of the planet Mars is exactly what you’ve been looking for! NASA’s Curiosity Rover has captured hundreds of thousands of pictures during its time on the red planet. All these images have been sent back to the NASA team, who compiled them to provide an immersive experience for us today.

5. Tour the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland

NASA’s work involves earth science, astronomy , heliophysics, and many other disciplines. The Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, offers an online tour . Taking a virtual tour even allows visitors to venture into spaces they wouldn’t be allowed in real life for sanitation reasons, like the clean rooms.

You can also tour the International Space Station !

6. Explore Coral Reefs in the Bahamas

Virtual Field Trips for Homeschoolers Coral Reefs

The Bahamanian coral reefs are beautiful and teeming with life. Without even paying to rent a snorkel and SCUBA suit, you can explore the depths of the ocean and the biodiversity of the Bahamas. Learn about the lionfish, butterflyfish, and coral bleaching.

7. San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo in California offers an interactive group tour with guides, but at $225, that’s cost-prohibitive for many! Fortunately, you can view many of their animals on live cams, where they stream their animals’ daily adventures for you to enjoy. You can watch their platypi play , observe hippos digging in the mud,  or watch the penguins scamper about . Many other San Diego Zoo animals are on live cam as well.

8. National Museum of Natural History

The Smithsonian’s Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., offers a wealth of virtual tour resources. In addition to current exhibits and permanent exhibits , you can also explore past exhibits that can’t be visited in real life anymore, like a fossil exhibit, a dinosaur exhibit, and a narwhal exhibit.

9. Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon Virtual Field Trip

Visit one of the deepest gorges on Earth as you tour through Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. The National Park Service provides walking tours of a hike to Phantom Ranch and a raft trip through the canyon.

10. The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy virtual tours allow you to explore the rainforest, deserts, renewable energy, and Hong Kong.

For a different, more self-guided type of virtual learning experience, The Nature Conservancy also offers a home nature lab curriculum for use with a variety of ages. These guides are perfect for a more self-guided homeschool science experience.

More Virtual Field Trips for You!

Several of our science courses have video tours in the curriculum. In our elementary astronomy course , we take virtual field trips to archaeological sites of famous places where astronomy was studied in ancient times: Babylon, Egypt, Mexico, Ireland, and Stonehenge. We also take a field trip of the entire solar system, with stops at each planet, the sun, and the asteroid belt!

10 Virtual Field Trip Ideas Your Kids Will Love

In our elementary Biology course , we visit the lab of Jan Baptiste Van Helmont to learn how trees grow and Alexander Fleming’s lab, where he discovered a fungus that kills bacteria.

In our high school Biology course , we visit Mackinac Island and meet Dr. William Beaumont who discovered stomach acid, was responsible for much of food digestion (with the help of an unlikely soldier with a hole in his stomach).

In our elementary Earth Science course students meet scientists each week from all over the globe!

12 Virtual Field Trips Your Kids Can Take

Verywell / Caitlin Rogers

  • Art and Culture

History and Social Studies

Though nothing can ever match the experience of going on a field trip to explore something in the real world, a virtual field trip can come close. Popularized at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual field trips for kids are likely here to stay. They offer families and schools a chance to allow kids to explore a world-class museum or monument without having to schedule travel or spend a mint. In fact, these virtual field trips are free!

So, if you have a free morning or afternoon and want to keep curious kids busy, head to one of these virtual field trip sites. A virtual tour can be a learning experience in itself or help families decide where they want to travel to next.

Art and Culture

If your child has always had an interest in the arts or you find that they are looking to draw or color something new, then these options below may be a great choice for your kid.

Metropolitan Museum of Art

Whether you’re obsessed with fashion, sculpture, music, or poetry, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a virtual tour for you. With online and in-person exhibits made viewable thanks to Google’s street view cameras, you can make your way through museum rooms or photo galleries full of art to admire.

This tour is presented in partnership with Google's Arts & Culture program, which features tours from museums large and small, all around the world. Visit cool collections and classic artworks without leaving your home.

The Blue House Frida Kahlo Museum

We can’t decide what’s more fun to look at in this virtual tour of The Blue House , a museum dedicated to Frida Kahlo: the art itself or the architecture housing it, which ranges from brightly painted houses and walls to lush greenery and fascinating trees.

Of course, the museum is also the place where she lived, died, and created much of her work—so you get up close and personal with Frida Kahlo the artist and Frida Kahlo the woman.

The National Gallery of Art

Scrolling through photos of art in a museum online isn’t that different from looking at them in a book—unless you're taking a virtual field trip to The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC!

This museum has found a way to make viewing art interactive. With its children’s video tours, it brings 50 different historic pieces of art to life in just a few minutes, including audio effects, narration, and close-up shots of the details featured in each work.

There are also conversation starters about art, a guided video tour of Stuart Davis’ work hosted by John Lithgow, and an interactive app for kids.

Got a future paleontologist, zoologist, or "Bill Nye the Science Guy" on your hands? For kids obsessed with animals, outer space, dinosaurs, chemical reactions, or how the world works, these science field trips are engaging and educational.

Smithsonian Museum of Natural History

If your child is interested in learning about the natural environment and the organisms that inhabit it, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History is a great option. Current, past, and permanent exhibits are included in this virtual tour, which allows you to navigate through the museum using your device or to click on different areas to visit on an interactive map.

There is even a series of narrated tours on video for kids who want to dive deep into a topic (like megalodons). The 360 degree images on this tour are crystal clear, making it feel like you are really there!

San Diego Zoo

Not only does the web site for the San Diego Zoo feature exhibit cams and zookeeper-hosted videos of many of its animal residents, but it’s also a great resource for animal crafts, online games, and fact-based infographics about different species. It’s more than just tuning into a live cam; it’s a virtual visit that gets close to being as fun as the real deal.

Seattle Aquarium

The Seattle Aquarium is a mecca for marine biologists-in-training. Check out what kinds of exhibits the aquarium houses on location through live cams, activities, and fact sheets, then head over to YouTube , where staff host a virtual field trip by walking-and-talking you through several of the species native to the Puget Sound that spend their days inside the aquarium.

Farm Food 360

Is your kid curious about how chickens, cows, or pigs are raised? No problem! At Farm Food 360 , you can read about how more than a dozen Canadian farms are run and watch a series of videos about each one, explaining everything from how a farmer spends their day to environmental sustainability of modern-day farms.

Johnson Space Center

Mini Neil Armstrongs should check out the Johnson Space Center online for aerospace education opportunities. Boeing and Discovery Education host two virtual field trips on space exploration: Innovating the Future and ecoAction.

Both trips consist of a video series and companion educator guides, so you can apply your newfound knowledge over the course of a few days’ worth of lesson plans and activities .

Museum of Science

The Museum of Science , a Boston-based science hub, is worth a trip at some point in your life. Until you can get to Boston, the museum is hosting virtual content, including live animal demonstrations to chats about current science events to planetarium tours.

If your kid's life goals include becoming president of the United States, these field trips focused on American history, civics, and notable landmarks will be right up their educational alley.

Ellis Island

Whatever country your family tree can be traced back to, it's likely that you have some kind of connection to Ellis Island . Through Scholastic’s website, you can take a 30-minute virtual tour of Ellis Island and follow it up with an interactive story and photo tour, diaries of real young immigrants, and colorful charts and bar graphs depicting important statistics about immigration through the decades.

Yellowstone National Park

You can go on virtual “walks” through Yellowstone National Park in a series of videos on the National Park Service’s website. When you’re done, dig deeper into fascinating areas of the park—like Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Geyser Basin—by reading about their histories, taking guided photo tours, and exploring their landmarks on an interactive map.

Mount Rushmore

You've seen Mount Rushmore in history books, but that didn't get you as close to Teddy Roosevelt’s left nostril as you hoped! Never fear: you can go on a "deep dive" (pun intended) on this virtual tour of the famous American landmark.

Featuring a 3D explorer, a 360 degree virtual tour, and a video about how the landmark has been digitally preserved over the years, you can get a good look at the true size and scale of this impressive monument—and learn a little about history, too.

The Best PreK and Kindergarten Field Trips (Both Virtual and In-Person!)

From the pumpkin patch to the fire station.

kindergarten field trips

Kinders are a wild bunch and taking them anywhere might seem daunting, but field trips provide kids with the kind of real-world learning that really sticks with them. These kindergarten field trips will keep your young students interested and (mostly) out of trouble.

Not all of these trips will be possible everywhere, but keep in mind local treasures that are unique to your area. And when you can’t manage a trip—for whatever reason—try our virtual kindergarten field trips below.

In-Person Kindergarten Field Trips

1. the pumpkin patch.

Is it even kindergarten if you don’t go to the pumpkin patch? Many locations offer tours via hayride and the opportunity to learn how vegetables like pumpkins grow. And, of course, picking out your own pumpkin is the best part!

2. The Grocery Store

A behind-the-scenes trip to the supermarket can teach kindergarteners everything from how their food is sourced to the concept of paying for goods with money. They can explore different roles and departments and—everyone’s favorite—try food samples.

virtual science field trips for kindergarten

Going to the zoo provides students with the chance to observe animal behaviors and learn about wildlife conservation. Most of them, like the San Diego Zoo , have educational programs, including keeper talks and up-close animal encounters.

4. A Children’s Museum

At children’s museums, the rule is: Please touch! If you’re lucky enough to have a children’s museum close by, most have areas specifically designed for children ages 5-6. Look for role-play areas, climbing structures, and water play.

5. The Fire Station

Grades K–2 are big on learning about community helpers, so the fire station is a great choice! A visit can help ease young children’s anxiety (sometimes firefighters can look scary in all their gear). And they’re sure to be fascinated by the trucks and equipment.

6. An Apple Orchard

virtual science field trips for kindergarten

Who doesn’t love apple activities ? A visit to the orchard allows little ones to learn how apples are raised and harvested. This is a great opportunity for them to pick their own apples and taste different varieties.

7. The Public Library

It’s never too early to teach kids about the amazing place that is their local library. On a trip to the public library, you can show your kinders how a library works, introduce them to the librarians (ask in advance for a storytime), and maybe even sign them up for their own library cards!

8. The Aquarium

If you’re not lucky enough to have a zoo close by, an aquarium is another good choice. Students will get a window into life under the sea, and lots of aquariums have touch pools that are sure to delight littles.

9. A Bakery

virtual science field trips for kindergarten

On a bakery field trip, curious kindergarteners can learn about how bread, cakes, and pastries are made. Take a tour of the kitchen and watch the mixing of ingredients and the baking process. Some bakeries even offer kids’ activities, like cookie decorating!

A farm field trip is a great way to connect children to agriculture. Plus, there are all kinds: dairy farms, poultry farms, apiaries, and more. You might try a large commercial dairy farm or a smaller family-owned hobby farm.

Virtual Kindergarten Field Trips

1. an egg farm.

virtual science field trips for kindergarten

We love these virtual egg farm field trips from the American Egg Board. Make sure you catch the elementary-friendly versions of Hertzfeld Poultry and Creighton Brothers Farms.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6wbfVWVk8Q[/embedyt]

Most zoos have live webcams in some of their most popular exhibits, such as the Panda Cam at Zoo Atlanta . However, some zoos offer a more in-depth look. You’ll definitely want to check out the San Diego Zoo .

3. The Aquarium

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY8__n13tKM[/embedyt]

It’s a similar story with aquariums. You have your pick of live webcams, but our favorites are the Georgia Aquarium’s Ocean Voyager webcam (wait for the whale shark!) and the “jellycam” at Monterey Bay Aquarium (so soothing). And definitely check out  The Maritime Aquarium where you can register for their virtual programs (try Fish Tales, A House for a Hermit Crab, or Shark Safari).

4. Boston Children’s Museum

“Walk” through all three floors of the Boston Children’s Museum on this virtual tour . Direct your students to the Countdown to Kindergarten exhibit.

What Our Customers Have To Say

5th Grade Teacher , Hawaii

“ I took my students on a Virtual Trip to the Amazon today!  They told me this field trip was much better than the one we went on from Discovery Education!!! “

3rd Grade Teacher , Maryland

“I just want to let you know how much of a blessing this site has been to me and to my students during this pandemic.  The theme in my classroom is “travel.” We have been able to continue with this theme by having weekly field trips. It is the highlight of everyone’s week. This was by far one of the best purchases I made this year.”

3rd Grade Teacher , North Carolina

“My 6th grade students are always excited to learn through reading and the Virtual Field Trips site. The videos are incredibly engaging and informative. The ease of use is very appreciated as a teacher pressed for time.”

6th Grade Teacher , Arizona

“I use the Virtual Field Trips site and the students LOVE it. Learning by virtually experiencing has been highly successful for my students. A few of our favorites are the Amazon, Coral Reefs, African Safari, and Rome.”

Thank you very, very much for including your site for free during distance learning. You made the virtual field trips easy for both teachers and children to use. All I had to do was copy the link into my Seesaw activity and my kiddos just tapped on the link and learned about places, people, and things. The DC Tour fit in nicely with their weekly reading selection on U.S. symbols.

2nd Grade Teacher , Virginia

“You have brightened my day, as I have looked extensively for high quality virtual trips, and your site is clearly one of the best I’ve found!”

5th Grade Teacher , Minnesota

“I teach 9th graders who are 2 to 3 years behind in their reading and writing.  They are also socioeconomically disadvantaged with not many experiences to write about.  I thought this would give them something to write about as well as be educational and enjoyable.  We do one each Monday and they love them!  They ask, “Where are we going today?”

9th Grade Teacher , Texas

“Your videos and accompanying lesson ideas are very helpful and high quality.”

8th Grade Teacher , New Mexico

“I teach grades K-3 Science, Social Studies, Government, Geography, and Economics.  I have found Virtual Field Trips videos a valuable piece in many areas.  I use an interactive white board on a daily basis and have been able to link the videos into the flip charts making access to them very easy during the lesson.  I look forward to more of these quality videos.”

Exploration Teacher , Minnesota

“I really appreciate the value of this site.  My students are very much enjoying it.  Thank you!”

3rd Grade Teacher , Montana

“ My students love these virtual field trips and honestly can’t get enough of them.  They ignite awesome writing. “

1st Grade Teacher, Teacher Librarian , Toronto

El Limonar International School in Murcia, Spain absolutely loved Virtual Field Trips when we were given the opportunity to use it in June. There are so many topics included in their library that we study in the Primary School that it is well worth buying into and the children were mesmerized from the moment they began watching. The images were bright and colourful while the commentaries very informative and clear, leading to a lot of discussion afterwards. I definitely recommend it.

4th Grade Teacher , Spain

I really want to thank Virtual Field Trips for allowing full access during the hardest time of education when we had to switch to remote so suddenly. It was super exciting for the students to tour around the world with just a click! They loved all the videos and naturally the assignments that followed. I really appreciate the support! Thank you thank you thank you!

“You have a great site with videos that are outstanding. I like how easy your site is to use.”

4th Grade Teacher , New Mexico

Friday 5: Virtual field trips

Virtual field trips can often help make tough concepts more engaging and easier to understand.

Key points:

  • Virtual field trips have staying power and help engage students
  • Taking the classroom into the world with VR and AR
  • 5 immersive learning tools for the classroom
  • For more news on virtual field trips, visit eSN’s Digital Learning hub

While virtual field trips are not a new phenomenon, they gained popularity shortly before COVID due in part to their ability to expose students to places and experiences they may not otherwise access due to funding barriers or geographical limitations.

When COVID mandated at-home and hybrid learning, many educators turned once again to virtual trips to keep students engaged in learning during pandemic-related instructional challenges.

Virtual field trips

In a nutshell, virtual field trips are digital experiences and explorations through places such as landmarks, museums, or even outer space. They employ animations, images, videos, sound clips, and 3D technologies to give students an authentic-as-possible opportunity to explore pyramids, underwater ecosystems, the Grand Canyon, well-known landmarks, and more. Some virtual trips for kids are accessible with a simple device, while others employ virtual reality headsets for a more immersive experience.

Virtual field trips and STEM learning

Hands-on STEM subjects are challenging to teach when students aren’t in the classroom all the time, and student engagement remains a challenge even after COVID. Virtual field trips address both of these persistent roadblocks. These trips can help students get a front-row look at STEM outside of the classroom. Where can those engineering concepts you learn during school take you in adulthood? Is it possible to be creative in a STEM career? Here’s how to boost STEM learning with virtual field trips for students .

Bringing real-world issues into the classroom with virtual trips

Climate change is an increasingly important subject in school curriculums. Today’s students will almost certainly inherit a climate-affected world and will need to understand the mechanisms of global warming if they are to grow into climate-conscious, civic-minded members of society. However, many students are dissuaded from pursuing environmental science due to mundane textbooks and complex diagrams. This is a serious issue, as students will need an in-depth understanding of greenhouse gases and ecological damage in the future. Educators can engage students and build excitement around environmental science using the latest virtual reality (VR) technology. This tech can take students on free interactive virtual field trips, meaning they can virtually visit climate-affected areas from the safety and comfort of the classroom. Make real-world issues more relevant for students .

Virtual field trips through augmented reality

Augmented reality gives educators the opportunity to bring the world to life. But first we need to see the world. For example, educators might enrich students’ learning by taking field trips to the heart of their capital city and asking students to draw landmarks, interview tourists, use iPad voice recorders, and make films using the camera on iPad, editing them in iMovie to bring those landmarks to life.  Then, using augmented reality apps, educators can link the children’s artwork to their videos and embed it all in a Google Map. This means that anyone can point their camera at the trigger image and find out more about the landmark they are visiting that day–all narrated by students. Here’s how to do it .

Why virtual field trips work

This upcoming generation of students grew up with internet-connected smart devices. For them, information comes instantaneously. Unfortunately, a barrage of apps are constantly combating their attention economy and impacting their focus and retention in class. Interactive virtual trips for elementary students can really help boost engagement. Virtual field trips with technologies such as AR and VR provide new learning opportunities that can keep students engaged and make lessons stick .
