Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Visit a Friend's Island

One of the most exciting parts about Animal Crossing: New Horizons is having the ability to connect with friends online and visiting other islands.

It may have been quite some time now since Animal Crossing: New Horizons first launched for the Nintendo Switch, but there are still plenty of new players that are just getting their feet wet with the long-running life-sim series from Nintendo. One of the most notable features from the latest entry allows players to visit their friend's islands via the in-game airport.

In order to visit another island in the game, players will need to be connected online first and foremost. Going to other islands that are owned by other players will be impossible without a stable connection. Once that's done, Animal Crossing: New Horizons island goers will have to make sure that they have a Dodo Code from their friend.

To get this Dodo Code, players will need to speak to Orville at the local airport and tell him that they want visitors. Once this is done, a Dodo Code will be given out and will need to be sent to the friend who is trying to fly out of their island.

By simply speaking to Orville and telling him "I wanna fly," the player will then be prompted to choose an island that's accepting visitors, and then the Dodo Code will have to be input. Once that is all set up, players will soon be on their way to their friend's digital Animal Crossing island. Keep in mind that the online connectivity in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a bit strict in what players can and cannot do.

For example, if one person is coming to visit another player's island, the owner of that island cannot be in a menu or in a conversation with a villager or NPC . And the island owner is also not allowed to move around any furniture, whether it is indoors or outdoors. Still, even with the limited functionality, players can have a fun time running around each other's island, hanging out on a beach, or just get inspired by all of the decorative items scattered about.

How Many Players Can Visit At Once?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons supports up to four players on one system locally and up to eight players online . This means that if someone already has eight friends on their island, other players will not be able to enter until somebody leaves the island.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is currently available as a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Visit a Friend’s Island

' src=

There are lots of steps, but the process isn't difficult!

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons , you can visit your friends’ islands and play together so long as you and your friends all have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. In fact, up to eight players can hang out on the same island at once!

To visit a friend’s island, you’ll just need to visit the airport on your island. Here’s how this works. (Please note that you can only start using the airport the day after you first begin playing New Horizons .)

Head into the airport and talk to Orville.

visit friends island acnh

Select “I wanna fly!”

visit friends island acnh

Choose “I wanna visit someone.”

visit friends island acnh

You’ll need to choose between local and online play. If you want to visit someone who is near you in the real world, you can select “Via local play” (though online play will also work in this situation). If you want to visit someone in another place, select “Via online play.”

visit friends island acnh

If you chose “Via online play,” Orville will tell you he needs to connect to the internet. Select “Roger!” to continue.

Once the game connects to the internet, Orville will ask if you want to search for a friend or enter another user’s Dodo Code. For our guide, we’ll select “Search for a friend.” (Dodo Codes can be used by friends, or you may be given a Dodo Code by a stranger if they’re allowing you to come over to sell turnips, etc.)

Orville will then search for any of your friends’ islands that are currently accepting visitors. If there’s only one, Orville will tell you about it and ask if you want to go there. Select “Let’s fly!” to travel to that friend’s island. If multiple friends have their islands open for visitors, you’ll see a list that will allow you to choose which one to visit.

From there, the game will take care of the rest, and you’ll see a cutscene as you arrive on your friend’s island!

Once you’re there, you can talk to your friend(s) through in-game text chat, or through voice chat by using the Nintendo Switch Online mobile application on iOS and Android devices. You can even use a headset to improve your voice chat experience, such as these Cloud Earbuds from HyperX .

And that’s all there is to it! If you want to invite your friends to visit your island instead, we have a guide for that as well. Check it out !

Want to know how to use this dodo code forum?

This is a friendly dodocode/turnips exchange forum. To use this forum you would need to share your ACNH Dodo Code, to allow users to visit your island to have fun and explore the creations and imagination of others.

We want everyone to enjoy the game, and to get excited when the turnip prices are high, so you can get rid of them or when users are doing giveaways on their island, storytelling or playing games.

Commonly asked questions

Experiencing interference.

This usually means that another user is travelling to the island at the same time. Please wait a few minutes and then try to join again.

What does FULL mean?

When you see FULL on our website it means that the island is maxed out which means unless the owner of the island posts their dodo code again, you won't be able to visit that island. We do this because some users want to have only a couple of users on their island.

What games can I create when I have vistors?

Here are a few which we've come up with:

  • Bug off - Requires a timer.
  • Who can catch the biggest fish - Requires a timer
  • Treasure Hunt
  • Island Mazes
  • Hide and Seek
  • Net hitting tag
  • Is this a pitfall seed or an item?

What should I do before opening my island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

If you have any items lying around on your island that you don't want visitors to take, make sure you pick them up and store them in your inventory. You could place a fence around these items.

The items which are affected are:

  • Items that have been dropped and not placed. This includes fossils and DYI recipes.
  • All type of fruits (Apple, Cherry, Coconuts, Orange, Peach, Pear), including the fruit still hanging on trees.
  • Star Fragments

Make sure you shake your Hardwood or Cedar Tree so you can get the two daily items that are hidden on them - your visitors could get them before you!

What can visitors do on other Animal Crossing: New Horizons islands?

  • Plant flowers
  • Shake trees
  • Dig fossils
  • Set pitfall traps

What Is Good Island Etiquette?

  • Frequently Asked Questions

What to Know

  • Go to the Airport and select I wanna fly! > I wanna visit someone > Search for a friend or Enter a Dodo code .
  • To travel to a new random island, buy a Nook Mile Ticket from Resident Services and use it at the airport.
  • To unlock Harv’s Island, establish three plots of land. After he invites you, choose Visit Harv's Island at the airport.

This article explains how to visit other islands in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Visiting other islands requires access to the airport, which opens up after completing the game's early stages.

Once you know your Switch friend's island is open, either locally or online, or you have their Dodo code, you can join them at the airport. Here's what to do.

Go to the Airport.

Speak to Orville and select I wanna fly!

Select I wanna visit someone

Choose whether to join a local island or go online.

Local only works if your friend is playing the game nearby physically.

Select either Search for a friend or Enter a Dodo code.

The former looks for friends on your friends list with open islands, while the latter requires you to enter a code given out by the host.

Choose to join the island and visit.

How to Visit Other Islands in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Another way to visit an island in Animal Crossing New Horizons is to use Nook Miles to buy Nook Miles Tickets to a random island. On the island, you can collect resources you may not already have available on your island. Here's how to visit.

Go to the Terminal in the Resident Services building.

Buy a Nook Mile Ticket for 2,000 Nook Miles.

You may need to collect more Nook Miles by completing daily tasks.

Speak to Orville.

Select Use Nook Miles Ticket .

Travel to the new random island.

You can harvest trees and bamboo, collect fruit, collect flowers, and meet new villagers on the island. You can also invite the villagers back to your island.

Once you leave, you will never return to the same island, so don't leave anything essential on the island.

How to Visit Harv’s Island in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Harv's Island unlocks once you have established three plots of land for new villagers on your island. He appears randomly to invite you over. Here's how to visit.

Select Visit Harv's Island .

Select Time for takeoff!

At Harv's Island, players can take photos in his photo studio setup. It's also possible to access an unlimited supply of all your items and fossils within the studio.

When visiting other people's islands, you should follow some polite rules. Here's a brief overview.

  • Don't linger for too long. Like in real life, know when to leave. Don't outstay your welcome. If you've come solely to exchange goods, go once you've done so.
  • Respect the island. Don't trash another player's island by chopping down trees or picking all their flowers. Leave it in as good condition as you found it.
  • Never 'leave quietly.' It's possible to leave an island 'quietly' by pressing the - button to leave, but this can be buggy and cause issues for players, especially if you've just traded items. Leave via the airport to ensure this does not happen.
  • Communicate with the other player. It's friendly to say 'hey' and talk to the other player, as well as potentially leave a gift. After all, you're a visitor to their home!

There is no specific timeframe for Redd's visits, but you can expect to find him wandering about your island once every couple of weeks. Sometimes, you'll hear an announcement that Redd has arrived, while other times, you'll notice his Treasure Trawler and know he's there.

Flick randomly visits islands. He could arrive any day of the year, but he will always leave the next day by 5 a.m. When Flick visits your island, be sure to sell all the bugs you can to him to make as much money as possible.

To  get iron in Animal Crossing , your best bet is to use a shovel or axe to strike rocks you find on your island and hope an iron nugget appears as a resource.

To get a ladder in Animal Crossing , you'll have to progress through Tom Nook's tasks, such as paying off your tent, building your home, building Nook's Cranny, and building a bridge. After accomplishing these tasks, Nook will give you a ladder recipe.

How To Visit A Friends Island In Animal Crossing New Horizons

How To Visit A Friends Island In Animal Crossing New Horizons

First and foremost, if you want to visit a friend, you need to have purchased the Nintendo Online Service. Without having the subscription to participate in Nintendo’s games’ online functions, you will not be able to visit a friends island online and will instead be told to subscribe before you can use this feature. Secondly, the Dodo Airport doesn’t open until your 2nd day. This is real-time, so you will either have to wait for it to open or advance the time on your Nintendo Switch to the 2nd day so you can use the Dodo Airport.

Once at the Dodo Airport you need to select to visit a friend. Your friend also needs to get to the airport and select “I want visitors”. Once the player has selected “I want visitors”, the visitor selects find a friends island and it will eventually find the island. You can then depart and after a short loading screen, you will be on your friends island.

When you arrive on your friends island they have to give you permission before you can take anything. If permission is granted, you can grab resources, trade items, and interact with the island much in the same way you interact with your own.

Animal crossing new horizons: what to do when visiting friends (& what not to do).

Visiting friends in Animal Crossing New Horizons is not only fun but helpful. This guide will layout the Dos and Don'ts when visiting friends

Animal Crossing New Horizons  allows players to visit each other's islands, but there a certain etiquette that comes along with every visit. This guide will provide players tips on what to do and not do when visiting another player's island.  Animal Crossing New Horizons  is the most social game to exist in the franchise yet. Nintendo allows up to four players to share a single island on one console and permits up to 8 players to visit each other on one person's island. Players can host little parties, exchange items, and even help the host player make decisions on how to improve their island. Players are allowed to visit each other's fully customizable islands just to hang out. This is a great way to meet new players as well.  Animal Crossing New Horizons is a strange game as in when players visit the island, there isn't actually much to do besides sit around, fish, and catch bugs, but that's kind of the point. There's something about  Animal Crossing where playing the game amits this vibe and only players of the series can really understand it. Multiplayer is really about doing nothing together, and in some odd way, its the best for that. Although, there are certain unspoken rules that should be followed when visiting another player's island.  Animal Crossing New Horizons  is a positive game, but when negative players come to taint the experience, it can ruin it for everyone. This guide will help players know what to do and not do when visiting another player's island.

Animal Crossing New Horizons multiplayer feature is added once the player unlocks the airport. The airport can be located at the bottom of each island and can take players to friend's own islands. This unlocks after the first full day in the game and also plays a vital role in attending Nook Tours. Nook Tours are special areas where players can purchase a Nook Ticket to attend an alternate island experience. Here, players can take whatever resource they like without any negative effects on their own island. This is a great way to stockpile materials for crafting and potentially run into fruit the player doesn't have residents to their island. Also, players can meet new villagers on these Nook Tours and invite them over to move onto their own island as a permanent resident. Friends can also meet these new villagers when they come to visit. This is helpful for gathering Nook Miles. Gathering Nook Miles also happens when visiting a friend's island. Want to keep collecting Nook Miles from visiting friends? Don't upset them! This guide will help players with the island etiquette with what to do and not do when visiting friends.

Do: Bring Fruit When Visiting Friends in Animal Crossing New Horizons

In  Animal Crossing New Horizons , the player will begin their island adventure with 1 of 6 fruit, Cherries, Oranges, Coconuts, Peaches, Apples, and Pears. Players can find other fruit by visiting other islands using the Nook Miles, but the best way to go about gathering new fruit is to trade with another player. When heading to another island, bring along your islands resident fruit, the other player might have other fruit they would like to share with you. Fruit from other islands sells for much more than the native fruit from Timmy and Tommy. This is a great way to populate the island with a wide variety of fruit.

Do Not: Take Fruit Without Permission in Animal Crossing New Horizons

It is almost a reflex for players to see a tree with fruit on it to go right ahead and shake the tree. While this is acceptable on the player's own island, this can upset the island owner if they were planning on doing something with this fruit. In most cases, players will respond positively if asked if they can have fruit. The  Animal Crossing community is amongst one of the kindest in all of gaming, so sharing is only second nature to their positive personas.

Do: Bring A Vaulting Pole And Ladder in Animal Crossing New Horizons

This is a perfect act of kindness for new players especially. When new players begin their island, they only have access to very few locations due to lacking the proper tools to explore. Eventually, the player will unlock the ability to craft a vaulting pole, then later a ladder. To help new players begin their journey, why not bring them a vaulting pole and ladder. This will allow them to go around and do every possible thing on their island. It does take a few hours to unlock the vaulting pole and ladder and can be a breaking point if players decide to keep playing or not. Help them out by bringing these helpful items.

Don't: Leave Holes in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Island hosts can add other players to their best friends lists, giving them the ability to dig holes on their island. While players are visiting, they may stumble across a clam buried underground in the beaches. Players can dig these up and turn them into fishing bait. While it is cool to collect items from another player's islands, it is recommended to clean up the holes left behind from digging. This can be a real annoyance to players who want to keep their island clean. Make sure to fill the holes after collecting the item.

Animal Crossing New Horizons  is a game about building a community, not only with the local residents but the ones in the real world too. The island life can be a bit lonely, so going off to visit other friends is the best way to be alone together. There's something special about  Animal Crossing New Horizons that can only be explained by players of the games. It manages to successfully take dozens of hours from players without noticing. It's hard to imagine that players can put hundreds of hours into a game about fishing and catching bugs, but that's still a low bar for playtime.  Animal Crossing New Horizons is one of the most addictive games to release in 2020.

The Do's And Don'ts Of Visiting Friends In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Image for article titled The Do's And Don'ts Of Visiting Friends In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

One of the true pleasures of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the sense of connection. It’s not just that Nintendo’s life sim has achieved near-universal ubiquity in a matter of days. It’s the fact that you, alongside up to seven other players, can go and visit a friend’s island. There, you can do what you’d do on your island: fish, catch bugs, play dress-up. Except you’re doing it together. Right now, with togetherness in the real world a fleeting resource, few things could be more welcome

Related Content

But like state dinners, wedding receptions, and elevator rides, there’s an unwritten code of conduct here. One wrong move can easily ruin a good time. In the interest of keeping everyone’s cortisol low in this genial game, get your Emily Post on and follow the rules to a tee.

Put down the phone.

When someone’s trying to visit your island, make sure everyone—including any other guests who have already arrived—has their Nook Phone tucked away. Otherwise, another guest won’t be able to fly to your island. Orville will relay to your scheduled visitor this vague message, “Wuh-oh! Looks like we’re getting interference… Hang on,” and refuse to book them a plane. Just wait until you’re all together to pull out your phones. That’s more like real life, anyway.

Don’t go into buildings at the same time.

Entering or exiting a building at same time as one of your fellow players can cause lag and other connectivity issues. While you’re at it, don’t try shopping from the same vendors at the same time, either. Only one player can talk to any given shopkeeper at once. This can cause strife if, say, one player wants to buy a whole tuxedo but, before they get around to purchasing the slacks, another player has struck up dialogue with Mabel. In short, wait your turn.

Don’t be a bully.

Tom Nook’s Getaway Package doesn’t have a security force. There are no laws. The closest thing to a bouncer in this game is that antisocial dodo with sunglasses who fires off faux military lingo. In other words, there’s no easy way to kick someone off an island without kicking off all of your guests by ending the session.

Reporting someone—which you can do by hitting the minus button and selecting “Report”—won’t immediately remove them. Delisting someone from your friends list will prevent them coming back, but it won’t kick them out of a current session. When you’re a guest, don’t abuse this immense privilege.

Here’s an example, for which I admit full culpability: When I first started playing, I visited a friend’s island. She was farther along than me—had a ladder, a vaulting pole, an upgraded ax, all that jazz. I still had flimsy tools and very much wanted an upgraded shovel. Understandably, she said no, on account of the fact that I had nothing useful to trade. So I started stomping on all her flowers. Soon enough, she gave me a sweet shovel, with one condition: I leave her island, stat. You shouldn’t do what I did! It’s mean!

There are other ways you can pressure people into lopsided trades, so long as you’re on their best friends list. You can plant trees all over the place. You can dig a bunch of holes in front of their house. You could even go full MI-6 blacksite operative and start chopping down trees. These tactics are all mean, too! Don’t do them!

Plan ahead.

When you’re on someone else’s island, you can’t access your storage. If you want to gift or trade something—say, a brand-new shovel, extra clothes, or some of your island’s native fruit—to your host, be sure to bring it with you before you go. Otherwise, you’ll either have to build it from scratch or head all the way back to your island. Both moves are total time-wasters.

Similarly, you can’t decorate while someone is visiting. If you’re hankering to show off your Throwback Race-Car Bed or Mini Fridge, put that stuff on display before guests arrive.

Ask before you take.

As you walk around someone’s island, you’ll probably see a ton of stuff that you want. There are fossils and pricey bugs . Each beach brims with seashells you can sell for bells. Taking any of this stuff without permission is frowned upon. But the gravest sin is to steal fruit that isn’t native to the host’s island. For instance, a host’s island might have plenty of pears (ew) and just one peach tree, which they certainly got elsewhere. You might want those peaches; I understand the impulse . Stand down.

Stealing the peaches robs your host of a cash flow. Each piece of native fruit sells for 100 bells. Non-native fruit, however, goes for 500 bells a pop. Your host could also be saving those peaches to create a grove. Planting three peaches begets three peach trees (and nine peaches). Planting those nine peaches creates 27 trees. You can see how the dollar signs add up. Seeing as it takes three days for fruit to regrow on trees, stealing those three peaches means you’re setting back your host’s plans by at least three days.

Maybe your host is willing to share. Who knows! The point is: Ask first.

Watch your wi-fi.

When someone leaves an island without going through the official channels—meaning only the airport—you’ll get an alert that “someone quietly left.” Maybe the wi-fi cut out or the Switch disconnected from the internet due to a wayward press of the power button. Regardless, the game will then reload. All players with a steady connection will stay on the host’s island, but any progress made in that session will revert. Dug holes will get refilled. Purchases will be refunded. Chopped trees will grow back.

To be sure, there’s not much you can do about fickle internet service. At the very least, keep cats, babies, and other unpredictables away from the router. It also helps to remember not to suspend the game using the Home button.

And for the love of K. K. Slider , stop stepping on the flowers.

How to visit friends on Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing is back with a new game for 2020, and it really couldn’t have come at a better time. Here’s how to make Switch time social with Animal Crossing: New Horizons ’ multiplayer modes.

There are three ways to get together with friends and family in Animal Crossing: Party Play, local wireless, and online play. Read on to find out which route is best for you – and how to go about setting it all up.

Animal Crossing Party Play

Party Play is the best way to play if you and your family are all squeezed onto one Switch. Up to four people can play together in Party Play as long as you share the same island (though each island can actually host up to eight players).

How to start Party Play:

  • Press the ZL Button to open up your NookPhone
  • Press the yellow flag ‘Call Resident’ icon – you’ll only get this option when there are two or more users sharing your island
  • Choose which players you want to invite and press ‘Confirm’
  • Choose the controller type for each player – single Joy-Con, pair of Joy-Cons or the Pro Controller
  • Read the information that pops up then hit ‘Close’
  • When it’s time to wrap things, open up your NookPhone, click ‘Call Resident’ and end the multiplayer session

Animal Crossing local wireless

Local wireless lets you play with other nearby Switch users with their own copies of the game. This makes this method excellent for long car journeys and visiting the other islands in your household, with a player limit of up to eight individuals.

How to invite people to your island with local wireless:

  • Go to the airport on your island and speak with Dodo
  • Select ‘I want visitors’
  • Read through the information and select ‘I understand’ once you’re done
  • Choose ‘Via local play’ and hit ‘Roger’
  • Select ‘Fling ‘em open’ to open your gate to nearby visitors. If you’d rather limit your island to specific visitors, click ‘Let’s set a code’ to create a four digit password to get in

How to visit other islands with local wireless:

  • Choose ‘I wanna fly!’
  • ‘Select ‘Via local play’ and then ‘Roger’
  • Wait for Dodo to give you the correct island name and hit ‘Let’s fly’. You may be asked to provide a four digit Dodo Code if the other player has set one

Players can visit the airport at any time to go back to their own island or – in the case of the host – lock the gate to any additional visitors.

Animal Crossing online

Online mode is perfect for social isolators and players who can’t reach their friends and family at the moment. This is the best multiplayer mode for long haul flights to far-away islands (read: playing with friends stuck in other towns or even countries). Two to eight people can play together in online mode, though you will all need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to team up.

  • Choose ‘I want visitors’
  • Select ‘Via online play’
  • Read through the information then press ‘I understand’
  • Hit ‘Roger!’
  • Choose ‘All my friends!’ to open your gate up to visitors from your Switch friend list or ‘Invite via Dodo Code’ to get a five digit code to share with friends
  • Close to gate to prevent any new visitors from coming in
  • Hit ‘I wanna fly!’
  • Select ‘Via online play’ then ‘Roger’
  • Choose ‘Search for a friend’ to scroll through Switch friends with their gates open or choose ‘Search via Dodo Code’ to enter a code provided by a friend
  • Wait for Dodo to give you the correct island name and hit ‘Let’s fly’
  • Return to the airport when it’s time to go home

You won’t be able to access multiplayer on your first day in the game but the option is available 24/7 from day 2. That said, it’s worth adding friends to your Best Friend list if you want to know when they’re online to time visits effectively.

You can also message your best friends through the Nook Phone, but be aware the feature will also give them permission to mess with your island.

If you really want to feel like you’re visiting each other, you might want to consider setting up a video call at the same time. Apps like Houseparty , Zoom , FaceTime and Hangouts will let you talk face-to-face and give virtual tours of your island without hitting any character limits or awkward pauses as you wait for each other to type.

ACNH has been released on Switch for a long time, but new players are still joining. One of the most notable features of this game is to allow players to visit friends' islands through the in-game airport, which makes the game closer to real life.

To visit another island in the game, you need an online connection. If there is no stable connection, it is impossible to go to other islands. Once completed, you need to get the Dodo Code from your friends.

How to get Dodo Code?

To get this Dodo Code, you need to talk to Orville at the local airport and tell him you want visitors. Once completed, a Dodo Code will be distributed, and then you can tell this code to your friends who want to visit your island. Similarly, if you want to visit your friend's island, you have to ask your friend for this Dodo Code.

How to visit your friend's island?

You can talk to Orville, you tell him "I wanna fly", you can choose an island that can accept tourists, and then input the Dodo code. Then you can go to your friend's island. What you need to pay attention to is: ACNH Online connection has strict requirements for what can and cannot be done.

Some restrictions

If you visit your friend's island, your friend will not be able in the menu, nor talk to villagers or NPCs. Your friend can't even move any furniture, whether indoor or outdoor. But you can hang out on the beach or run on the island freely.

How many players can visit at once?

ACNH supports up to 4 players on a system locally and up to 8 players online. This means that if there are already 8 friends visiting your island, then your other friends will not be able to visit your island until someone leaves your island.

If you are a new ACNH player, you can subscribe to MMOWTS, because we will frequently update related news and game guides, which may help you know about this game faster.

MMOWTS also provides cheap ACNH Bells and Nook Miles Tickets, even you can get some ACNH Bells in the game, but compared to your later needs in the game, it is far less, so when you need more Bells Or when Nook Miles Tickets , you can come to MMOWTS to buy, you can trust our website 100%, and there will never be scams on our website.

Arriving at the airport in Animal Crossing New Horizons

So you’re super proud of the island you’ve created in Animal Crossing: New Horizons on Switch, and want to share it with the world … or at least some friends. Bringing people to your island is a little tricky at first (this is a Nintendo online game after all), but once you get the hang of it, it’ll be a breeze.

Just a reminder: If you’re connecting to other players online, you’ll need a Nintendo Online Subscription .

Head to the Airport

Standing in the airport in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Starting on Day 2, head to the Dodo Airlines airport and talk to Orville , the bird behind the counter. Select the option “I want visitors.”

From here you’ll be asked if you want visitors for local or online play . Select online play.

Next, Orville will ask you who you want to invite.

If you’re already Nintendo Switch friends with someone who is also playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons , you can open your gate to your friends only, and they’ll be able to come. For Nintendo Switch friends, select “All my friends!”

If you’re inviting people who aren’t on your Nintendo Switch friends list, select “Invite via Dodo Code.” He’ll ask you who you want to invite via the code. Select “The more the merrier!”

Don’t worry: You won’t get swamped with people unless you share the code on social media or something.

Orville will confirm that you want a public code. Select “Yeah, invite anyone.”

The gate will now open and Orville will give you your temporary five-character Dodo Code .

Share your Dodo Code with friends

Anyone you share this code will with be able to join your town. They won’t be able to, say, cut down all your trees, but just be careful who you share it with.

Your friends can now use your Dodo Code by going to the Airport in their town and saying that they want to visit an online town. There’s no need to actively invite them, and you can continue playing as normal until they show up.

Add Best Friends

Checking an online friend in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Once someone has been to your town at least once, make sure you add them as a Nintendo Switch friend (if they aren’t already). To do this, go to your Profile page on the Switch home screen (your player icon at the top left) and select “Add Friend.” Then select “Search for Users You Played With.” Whoever’s on the top of the list should be your newly-invited buddy.

Once they are Nintendo Switch friends, inviting them in the future becomes much easier. The next time they enter your town or you enter theirs, pull open your Nook Phone , and look at the new app called Best Friends List . There’s a page called Friends that will show you everyone you’ve recently played with. From there, you can select a name and send them an invite to become Best Friends .

Once they accept your Best Friend invite, you’ll be able to use the in-game keyboard to message them whenever they’re online. This will make setting up multiplayer sessions much easier.

When you have a large list of Best Friends, you can have Orville invite them all in a batch, which is super handy — and easier than having to deal with a bunch of Dodo Codes.

Note: Be careful who you choose as your Best Friends. Any Best Friends will have full access to wreck shop in your town, cutting down trees, and swiping whatever they want. Making that internet rando a Best Friend? Probably not a good idea.

Correction : This post has been updated on how you can invite friends to your island using the Nintendo Switch friends list.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online to have friends visit your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Image of Zack Palm

For those enjoying Animal Crossing: New Horizons, we highly recommend grabbing the Nintendo Online subscription so your Nintendo Switch can access the internet. You will unlock multiple features available in the game, such as being able to invite friends to your island whenever you connect to the internet. Is Nintendo Online required for you to invite friends to your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Can you invite friends to your island without Nintendo Online?

Regardless if you want to join a friend’s island or invite them to theirs, you will need to a Nintendo Online subscription to play with others in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It does matter if you and your friend are a good distance away from each other trying to play the game. When you visit your island’s Airport, make sure to choose the Online Play option

However, the exception to this is through local play. You can connect if you and another New Horizons player are on the same network and near each other. The big thing for this is to be relatively close to each other, such as being in the same room. We wouldn’t recommend trying to connect to someone else if you are across the house from each other, but it might work. You can access these functions by visiting your island’s Airport and asking to do Local Play instead of Online Play.

Alternatively, there’s the single-system multiplayer where you can invite another profile on your Nintendo Switch to visit your island. Both profiles will need to be registered to the same Nintendo Switch. This is not a split-screen function. Instead, you and the other players on the same Switch will share a screen, with a leader deciding where you all go on the island and what activities you do. You will need to be in the same room as everyone.

A majority of Animal Crossing: New Horizons players will want to have a Nintendo Online subscription if you’re playing with anyone outside of your house. However, if you live with someone or share the same Nintendo Switch, visiting someone else’s island is possible without purchasing Nintendo Online.

Animal Crossing Visitors Guide: Redd, Gulliver, Flick, And More In New Horizons

A variety of characters can come to your island at any time in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Here's what each of them offers and everything else you need to know.

By Kallie Plagge on July 8, 2020 at 2:57PM PDT

Like in previous Animal Crossing games, special visitors may come to your island on any given day in Animal Crossing: New Horizons . Many of these visitors are random, while others show up at specific times of the week or day, and they either offer rare rewards, sell special items, or buy things off you for a great price. We've rounded up all the visitors in the game so far, how to unlock them, when and where you should look out for them, and what they offer when they visit.

The first wave of the summer update added Gullivarrr, a pirate version of Gulliver, and Pascal, who's actually not quite a special visitor in the traditional sense. A previous update added Leif, the gardening sloth, and Jolly Redd , who sells art of questionable origins. Leif brings with him rare flower seeds and the new shrubs, while Jolly (formerly Crazy) Redd's art is used to upgrade the museum . Read on for details.

For more Animal Crossing tips, be sure to check out our guide to hybrid flowers and our guide to the deserted island Mystery Tours . We also have lists of all the fish and bugs in the game, when and where they appear, and how much they sell for.

Daily Visitor: Pascal

Gullivarrr (pirate gulliver), k.k. slider, campsite visitors.

While most special NPCs visit once a week or less, there's one NPC who can show up every single day: the scallop-loving sea otter Pascal. He's an extra-special case in that he can show up alongside any other visitor on any and every day of the week. All you need to do is dive for scallops in the ocean; when you find one, Pascal just might pop up out of the water and ask to trade you for it. This is the only way to get mermaid-themed DIY recipes and clothing!

Pascal really loves scallops.

While Pascal doesn't always show up on the first scallop you find, he can show up every single day. Just keep trying until you get him to trade with you--and make sure your pockets aren't full! Check out our Pascal guide for more details on how to find scallops, what mermaid items you can get, and more.

Weekday Visitors

These visitors can show up on any weekday. Because there are nine weekday visitors currently and only five weekdays, you won't get each NPC every single week. But according to datamining by Ninji , you should get a pretty even spread of these nine visitors from one week to the next, as the game prioritizes visitors you missed the week prior.

Previously, Saharah, Leif, and Kicks were all guaranteed to show up each week , with the rest of the visitors vying for the remaining two weekdays. But as of the summer update from July 3 (update 1.3.0), that's no longer the case, which should mean you aren't left waiting three weeks between Redd visits!

Note that even when these visitors are around, you may still encounter Celeste or Wisp at night; see the Nighttime Visitors section below for more details on those two. Also, Harvey is a one-time visitor and will not visit again once he's told you about his island early in the game, so we have not listed him here.

  • When: random weekday; 5 AM - 10 PM
  • Where: town square
  • Prerequisite: Nook's Cranny is built; Able Sisters has not been built
  • Sells clothing and accessories
  • Friends from other islands can buy from her

Buying clothes from Mabel is the key to unlocking the Able Sisters tailors shop . She will stop appearing as a visitor once you've built the Able Sisters shop.

  • When: random weekday; 5 AM to midnight
  • Prerequisite: Able Sisters has been built
  • Reward: tailors tickets

Label will ask you to dress in an outfit according to a theme she gives you (e.g. "everyday," "cute," etc.). If she likes your outfit, she'll send you tailors tickets in the mail; one ticket can be used to buy one item from Able Sisters under 3,000 bells. Label will also give you an item from her personal fashion label, which will subsequently be available for purchase at random from Able Sisters.

  • When: once per week on a random day; 5 AM to midnight
  • Where: anywhere
  • Prerequisite: you've upgraded your tent into a house
  • Sells rugs, flooring, and wallpaper

Saharah sells three sizes of rugs--small for 1,000 bells, medium for 2,000 bells, and large for 3,000 bells--as well as one "mysterious" wallpaper and flooring for 3,000 bells each. She'll also give you Saharah tickets for the rugs you buy, and once you have five tickets, you can exchange them for a different mysterious wallpaper or flooring. Saharah is the only way to get certain rare wallpapers and floors, including animated ones.

  • When: random weekday; 5 AM - 5 AM the next day
  • Where: beach
  • Prerequisite: Blathers is set to move to your island
  • Reward: rare "world"-themed item
  • Only one player can get the reward per visit

Gulliver will appear washed up on your beach and will be asleep. Keep talking to him until he wakes up; once he does, he'll ask you to recover five parts for his broken communication device. You can dig up these communicator parts the same way you'd dig up manila clams: Find spots on the beach that spray water and dig with any shovel. He'll send you a rare item from his travels (e.g. a pagoda or a pyramid) in the mail the next day. Check out our Gulliver guide for the full list of rewards, more info on communicator parts, and tips for getting the rare rusted parts.

  • Prerequisite: you have purchased a wet suit
  • Reward: rare pirate-themed item

As of update 1.3.0, Gulliver has an alter-ego: Gullivarrr, or pirate Gulliver. Like with regular Gulliver, he'll appear washed up on your beach and will ask for your help. You'll need to use a wet suit--which you can purchase from the cabinet in Nook's Cranny, via Nook Shopping, or with Nook Miles at the terminal in Resident Services--to swim in the ocean and search for his lost communicator. See our pirate Gulliver guide for the full list of pirate-themed rewards and information about how to swim.

  • When: once per week on a random weekday; 5 AM - 10 PM
  • Prerequisite: Able Sisters shop is built
  • Sells shoes, socks, and backpacks/bags
  • Friends from other islands can buy from him

Check out our guide on when Kicks shows up for full instructions on how to get him to visit your island.

  • Prerequisite: Resident Services has upgraded
  • Buys bugs at 150% of market price; takes art commissions
  • Only buys/takes commissions from players on the island (not friends who are visiting)

Sell all your bugs to Flick when he visits to make even more money than usual. You can also bring him three of one kind of bug to commission a piece of his art, which he'll send you in the mail the next day. Check out our full Flick guide for more on what to do when he visits your island.

Flick in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

  • Where: near water
  • Buys fish at 150% of market price; takes art commissions

C.J. is a little more complicated than Flick; before he'll buy fish from you, he'll give you a fishing challenge to complete. Once you've done what he asks, you'll be able to sell fish all day. He also takes commissions on behalf of Flick; give him three of one type of fish to get a fish statue in the mail the next day.

  • When: random weekday; all day
  • Where: secret beach (at the top of your island)
  • Sells art and furniture
  • Friends from other islands can buy art, but everyone is limited to one piece of art per day

Jolly Redd will bring his Treasure Trawler boat to your island periodically to sell rare art. Be careful, though: Like in previous games, not all of the art he sells is legitimate. Art can be donated to Blathers at the museum , but only if it's authentic; Blathers won't take forgeries. See our full art guide for details on how to spot fake art.

  • When: once per week on a random weekday; 5 AM to 10 PM
  • Prerequisite: updating your game to version 1.2
  • Sells rare seeds and shrubs; buys weeds for twice the normal price

Leif is a friendly sloth who loves gardening. When he brings his gardening cart to your island, he'll sell you rare flower seeds you can't normally get at Nook's Cranny, plus shrub starters. Shrubs are planted like trees and grow in a few days; their flowers are seasonal, so some shrubs won't bloom right away. Leif will also buy weeds from you for 20 bells per clump of weeds.

Weekend Visitors

Most weekends, you'll get two visitors: K.K. Slider on Saturday and Daisy Mae on Sunday mornings. However, when Saturday events like the Fishing Tourney or Bug Off take place, K.K. Slider's visit is moved to Sunday. This does not disrupt Daisy Mae's visit.

No Caption Provided

  • When: Saturdays, 6 PM to midnight
  • Prerequisite: completing Project K
  • Reward: song

K.K. Slider will hold a concert in your town square each Saturday after you've completed Tom Nook's Project K. He will play one main song and one encore, but you'll only get a copy of the first song. He takes requests, too--you have to enter the name of the song exactly, including any punctuation, for him to play it. See our full list of K.K. Slider songs for the song names, including secret songs.

  • When: Sundays, 5 AM - 12 PM
  • Prerequisite: Nook's Cranny is built
  • Sells turnips

Daisy Mae has taken over her grandma Joan's role from previous games. She sells turnips on Sunday mornings for a varying price (somewhere around 100 bells for 10 turnips). From Monday to Saturday, Timmy and Tommy will then buy turnips for varying prices in what is called the stalk market. Like the real-life stock market, the goal is to buy low and sell high! Timmy and Tommy change their prices every morning and then again at noon, so you have to check often. See our full turnip guide for more details on the stalk market.

Nighttime Visitors

The two night-only visitors, Celeste and Wisp, operate on their own schedules independently of the other two groups of visitors. Because of this, you can encounter them and another visitor on the same day. They can also show up on any day of the week.

  • When: 7 PM - 5 AM on a random night with a meteor shower
  • Prerequisite: the museum is built
  • Reward: DIY recipe
  • Anyone and everyone can get a DIY recipe from her, but you can only get one per day regardless of whose island you're on

Celeste appears at night when there's a meteor shower. On her first visit, she'll teach you how to wish on shooting stars and give you a DIY recipe for a wand. On subsequent visits, if you show her star fragments related to constellations (e.g. Pisces fragments), she'll give you a DIY recipe using that kind of fragment. You can get star fragments by wishing on shooting stars; they'll show up on the beach the next morning.

No Caption Provided

  • When: random night; 8 PM - 5 AM the next day
  • Prerequisite: none
  • Reward: random item

Wisp is a scaredy-cat ghost. When you talk to him, pieces of his ghost body will scatter around your island. You need to find all five and catch them using a net, then return them to him. Once you do, he'll offer you a random reward (like furniture or wallpaper) and give you a choice between something you don't have already and something expensive. It seems he doesn't have a good sense of either.

In addition to the special characters above, you may also find that a random villager is visiting your campsite on any given day. Isabelle will announce this the first time you open the game for the day, unlike with the rest of the visitors. Campers can show up even if you have the maximum 10 villagers on your island; you can even invite them to live on your island if you talk to them enough, and if you don't have space, you will have the option to kick one of your existing villagers out. However, the villagers that gets kicked out will be random.

How to Add Best-Friends and Invite Friends Online

This ACNH guide explains the Best-Friends List app and how it affects multiplayer . You'll find this app on Nook Phone and on the Nintendo Switch Online App when you select Animal Crossing: New Horizons .

How to Invite Friends Online and Visit Friends' Islands

You cannot add Best Friends until you've played with them at least once via online play (you must also be on your Nintendo Switch friends list). So we'll start with how to play online. There's no way to send a direct invite to your Nintendo Switch friends. Instead you're "opening the gates" to your island. They don't get a notification about this but you do have some in-game messaging options (we'll discuss that in a bit).

Openthegates.jpg

Inviting friends online:

  • Go to Dodo Airlines (unlocked on full day 2)
  • Select "I want visitors."
  • Select via online play (if they're in the same room as you, with their own Switches and own copies of ACNH you could select local).
  • After connecting to the internet you can open your island to "All my friends!" "Only my Best Friends!"or "Invite via Dodo Code." See the chart below for details.
  • When you want people off your island just go back to Dodo Airlines and ask Orville to "close the gate."

Visiting a friend's island:

  • Select "I wanna fly!"
  • Select "I wanna visit someone."
  • After connecting to the internet you can "search for a friend" or "Search via Dodo code." See chart below for details.
  • When you're ready to leave your friend's island just go to Dodo Airlines and head home. Tip: Your Map app on your NookPhone shows your friend's island layout in case you get lose.

How to Add People as Best-Friends

The only way to get the Best-Friends List App, which allows you to add people as Best Friends is to play Online. When you go to Dodo Airlines and ask to visit someone "far-away, Online" or ask for visitors "far-away, Online." Orville will add the Best-Friends List App and the Chat Log app to your phone.

Limited Tools.png

  • Become friends on the Nintendo Switch.
  • Play together online once. (The Airport unlocks on day 2. Remember this does not count the "tutorial day.")
  • Use the Best-Friends List app to send them a Best-Friend request.
  • They must accept you in order for you to become Best Friends.
  • You can also manage/remove best friends from this app. Plus message them all at once.

Bffs.jpg

Playing with Friends vs Playing with Best Friends

Here's how to play with friends and how the best-friends list can change things. Everything you get on another island will go into your pockets, allowing you to take it back to your island later!

Meandbren.jpg

Only Best Friends will have access to their Axe and Shovel .

How to Message Friends

Here are the ACNH messaging features. Orville will give you both the Best Friends App and the Chat Log app when you ask to play Online.

Whether you have island visitors or are visiting an island yourself, you can use the Chat Log app to send messages to everyone as long as you're on the island together. It's basically a giant group text but your message also appears as a speech bubble above your head.

Lavafloor.jpg

When you're by yourself you can still send messages but ONLY to your Best Friends using the Best Friends App . You can ONLY send these messages when the recipient is online. Be sure to enable the communication feature by opening the Best Friends List app and hitting the (-).

Enable communication.jpg

How to Send Mail to Friends

Finally, the other form of communication in ACNH is good ol' fashion mail! Just head to Dodo Airlines and interact with the card stand on the right of Orville. From here you can send a letter to another resident (human or animal!), your future self, or any friend! They'll get the letter shortly after.

17 Exciting Things to do in Moscow

Written By: Linda Voltaire

Updated On: December 21, 2022

the very best things to do in moscow

Visiting Russia? These are the top 17 things to do in Moscow to help you plan your trip.

If the western world has New York City , the first great metropolis on the eastern side of our planet is Moscow. A huge city with a complicated and impressive history, Moscow gets a bad rep over Russian politics – but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Capital to the largest country in the world, Moscow takes the grandeur of its standing very seriously.

This is a place where luxury is king and where opulence takes a front seat in every aspect of life. The buildings are grand and imposing, the parks are luscious and enormous, and even the subway stations look different in Moscow than anywhere else in the world.

Table of Contents

Best Things to do in Moscow, Russia

Walking around Moscow is also going through the tumultuous history of the 20th century, which had Russia as one of its main protagonists. There are fascinating remains of these times everywhere in the former Soviet capital, from the gorgeous Seven Sisters skyscrapers to the Orthodox cathedrals that were closed for the better part of a century.  Still, Moscow is also a completely modern city, with a vibrant social and party scene, incredible restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

After living in Russia’s capital as an ex-pat for four years, I got the privilege to experience not only the main attractions in Moscow but also the everyday life in this huge city and quickly found my sweat spots off the beaten tracks! So here is my list of my top 17 things to do in this exciting metropolis!

Attractions in Moscow

When visiting a famous city like this one, it’s a must to go through the most iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists.

1. The Red Square, Kremlin & Surrounding Area

moscow tourist attractions | St. Basil’s Cathedral

No place tells the story of Moscow’s power in the past century the way the Red Square does. This is where the biggest political meetings in the USSR occurred for many decades, and you can feel the power on each step.

Here, you’ll also find the historic museum at the entrance, showcasing the decades of history behind this iconic landmark. The Lenin Mausoleum, perhaps the most famous resting place in the world and home to the remains of the former communist leader, is also here.

On one side of the Red Square you’ll find the Kremlin, the fortified complex that now hosts the presidential residence. This is also home to the most iconic of all Moscovite landmarks: St. Basil’s Cathedral, a 16th-century marvel of colors. This is the best spot to take a selfie and show the world you’ve reached the Russian capital!

  • Get your Kremlin Skip the Line Tickets and Kremlin tour here.
  • Free cancellation up to 24-hours in advance of the tour.

2. Bolshoi Theatre

moscow things to do | bolshoi theatre

You can easily spend a couple of days just exploring the Moscovite city centre, and the Bolshoi Theatre should be your second stop. Walk past the Red Square and then head to the nearby Bolshoi Theatre, one of the oldest and most renowned houses of opera and ballet on Earth.

Visit for the impressive early 19th-century architecture, but if you’re seeing a ballet performance, make sure you book between 3 and 6 months in advance! I can strongly recommend this as it is a truly unique experience!

  • Book a private 2-hour tour of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre.
  • See the presidential box reserved for tzars, watch a rehearsal and skip the lines through a separate entrance.
  • Free Cancellation up to 24-hours in advance.

3. Luxury Shopping at GUM and TSUM

russia moscow sites | GUM

While many might think of Moscow as the sad place with the long bread queues from the USSR days, it’s been quite the capitalist haven for a while.

If you’re up for some shopping, you’ll find one of the biggest luxury malls in town, TSUM, right behind the Bolshoi and GUM, at the red square. GUM is the most famous department store in town, where you’ll find luxury everywhere and all high-end brand.

All in an imposing late 19th-century building with lots of history, worth a visit just for the design, its bridges and the glass roof even though you are not up for shopping!

4. Christ the Savior Cathedral

things to see in moscow | christ the savoir cathedral

A newer addition to the gorgeous Moscovite cathedrals and my grandeur neighbor during my years in the city Don’t let the young age of this building fool you. After the perestroika in the early 90s, the newly revived Russian Orthodox Church received permission to build a cathedral on this site. They did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church.

The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes as tall as the skies in bright gold and gorgeous paintings and decor! Bring a shawl to cover your hair to adjust to the local tradition.

Head to the back of the cathedral and you will find one of the most photographed bridges in Moscow, the Patriarshiy Most. This is the perfect spot to get a good view and photo of the cathedral but also to see the Kreml and Gorky Park from a distance. Or why not just enjoy a moment watching the river and its boats!

  • Get around Moscow with ease using the Hop On Hop Off boat and Bus ticket. 24, 48 or 72-hour tickets available.

5. Gorky Park

tourist attractions in moscow | gorky park

Cross the river and head to Gorky Park along the Moscow river. The most famous green area in town, similar to New York ’s Central Park and the weekend hangout for locals. There are many beautiful parks in the city, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, this is the unmissable one!

With fair attractions to entertain children, beautiful artificial lakes and gardens, and lots of outdoor activities, it’s a lovely place to relax. A place of rest in the middle of the metropolis. The area in front of the New Tretyakov Gallery & the Muzeon Park of Arts is actually one of my favorite oasis as a bit more quiet and peaceful than Gorky itself.

Why not spend some time in the museum to get a great tour of Russia’s history through art or just enjoy the art exhibition outside where local artists spend their weekends.

6. River Cruising

tourist attractions points of interest

One of the best ways to experience Moscow is from the Moscow River. There are many stops for the boats and one is just next to Gorky Park. See the city from another perspective – and turn the ride into a romantic one by taking the evening cruise. Moscow is magic during the night.

If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, take the Radisson Blu cruise – or the Erwin for a delicious seafood dinner. Both stop at Gorky or at the luxury Radisson Royal Hotel, set in one of the Seven Sister’s skyscrapers.

  • We use Get Your Guide when booking city tours and they offer a River Sightseeing Cruise seeing all the main tourist attractions in Moscow

7. Metro Hopping

unusual things in moscow | train station

First inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow subway system is one of the oldest in the world, and certainly the most beautiful. Started under Stalinist times, each metro station is dedicated to grandeur and oozing personality.

Visiting the subway stops is an attraction in and of itself, and Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Kropotkinskaya are my favorites. Those surrounding the Red Square are also mesmerizing – in general, these are kind of like underground palaces.

Most of the signs at the Moscow Metro now have Latin letters, so it’s very easy to get around!Unfortunately, the trains are not as beautiful and pleasant as the stations but still, this is a true Moscow experience.  Take a guided tour of the 9 most beautiful Metro Stations including the award-winning art deco station. See more details here.

8. Arbatskaya & Artsy Moscow

place to visit in moscow | arabatskaya

Novy Arbat Street is one of the most touristy areas in the city, with lots of shops and cafés directed at visitors. When you walk a little beyond, you’ll find a different part of town, where the hip scene thrives because so many artists live in the area. Just follow the small streets with fewer tourists!

9. Moscow State University View

moscow unique things to do | university

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings hosts the main building of the Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Russia – and the one with the best view.

Although this is a little outside the city centre, the sight from above is more than worth it, with the nearby fountains and park and then the whole of the city behind them.

10. Russian Market

where to shop in moscow | russian market

If you love to visit markets wherever you go, Moscow has one of the most impressive ones in the world – the Izmailovsky. You can easily take the metro here and feel like you’ve been transported to another time.

This place was first built in the 16th century and retains the look of an old fairytale, with a lineup of colorful old castle. A lovely local experience beyond the confines of the bustling metropolis, where you can also try some delicious Russian barbecue.

Here, you’ll find beautiful souvenirs at great prices.

Off The Beaten Track Moscow

unique moscow things to do | graffiti

Once you’ve covered the most touristic spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer – and the places below will also be full of locals! Moscow is a city for hipsters, full of trendy and arty spots where you can literally feel the creativity oozing! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend my sweat spots below!

11. Patriarshiye Prudy

moscow unique things to do | patriarshy prudy

This is my favorite area in the entire city! While Moscow is generally a very noisy metropolis, Patriarch Ponds is far quieter, yet such a vibrant place. This is a very hip and trendy area making you think you are rather in Paris than in Moscow. Here the streets are narrow and full of chic eateries and clubs to see the local crowd.

A little bohemian and with an air of peace you won’t find anywhere in the city this is a great spot to spend an afternoon with your thoughts.

12. ArtPlay

museums in moscow | artplay

Barely 15 minutes away from the city center you’ll find the artsiest Moscow district: ArtPlay. For decades, this block was a factory, but it was renovated to become a hub for the arts not too long ago.

Now, you’ll find it’s full of exhibitions, showrooms and art schools – and some of the most creative people in town. Writers, painters, and young hip people use ArtPlay as a rendezvous, and you can feel the creative energy here. The industrial design with modern interior decoration is also a feast for the eyes!

13. Shopping Local Designs

moscow sightseeing | shopping district

If you’re into design, both international and local, you’ll find lots of cute things at Patriarshiye Prudy. Department store Podium Market is also a great spot for shopping, as a department store everywhere in town, with lots of local and international brands. There’s one in the Four Seasons Hotel next to Red Square. My favorite Moscow mall is Tsvetnoy Central Market, a cool spot with great brands, lots of inspo, and even a cute café!

14. Moscow City

modern skyscrapers of moscow

Like many other great capitals of the world, for the past few decades, Moscow has hosted a super modern area full of modern skyscrapers – Moscow City. With a completely different vibe than the rest of town, it’s like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressively tall glass buildings. Here, you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, such as Ruski and Sixty they are perfect spots for dining or enjoying a glass of wine with a view. There are also a relatively new shopping mall with lots of international brands called Affimall!

Wine, Dine, and Party in Moscow

view of moscow from ruski

Gone are the gloomy Moscow days – cold as it might be in the winter, Russia’s capital is a place for the senses. Great food and drinks abound – and the clubs are hot, too!

15. Where to Eat in Moscow

where to eat in moscow

Moscow is a great metropolis where people love to dine out, and there are endless options for delicious food. The flavors are as diverse as you’d expect from a big city, with options of fine dining and little hipster eateries.

  • For traditional Russian flavors, I can’t recommend Café Pushkin, Dr. Zhivago, and Turnadot enough.
  • When looking for international cuisines, Italian is always the way to go, and my local favorite is Probka.
  • Fine dining is best done among the clouds at White Rabbit, with European flavors.
  • As for the hip spots, you can spend a full day just eating around trendy places, from burgers to Asian fusion.

More Dining Options

white rabbit moscow russia

  • Patriarshiye Prudy offers a lot of small and classy spots with cool concepts, like breakfast restaurants I Love Cake and Fresh.
  • For dinner, I love the NYC experience of Saxon & Parole, and the wonderful trendy Pins, with its delicious food and drinks.
  • For delicious Asian food head to CutFish.
  • Lastly, there’s a recent revival of food markets in Moscow, offering lots of great choices of international flavors at affordable places.
  • Don’t miss out the Vietnamese food stand at the Danilovsky market, and everything at Usachevsky!

16. Rooftopping

things to do in moscow russia | city scape

Big cities deserve to be seen from above, having a cocktail among the clouds. These are my recommendations for rooftop bars in Moscow.

  • As I mentioned in the Moscow City section, Sixty & Ruski are two of my favorites, overlooking the newest part of town.
  • White Rabbit and its fine dining is also a lovely place for a fun dinner looking down on Moscow.
  • O2, in the city center, has an advantage above all others: amazing views of the Red Square.
  • Buono, above the Radisson Royal Hotel, might be the most romantic rooftop hotel in town, with its candlelit setting.
  • Also on the Radisson stands the Mercedes. It’s a luxurious and posh experience with delicious cocktails.
  • The Sky Lounge offers a peculiar experience, mixing an old Soviet building with futuristic additions.

17. Moscow by Night

must do in moscow | moskva river

Party the night away! The city is full of bars everywhere, but there are some areas where you’ll find more than others.

  • Patriarshiye Prudy has lots of hip and small clubs and great bars, including the super fun private club Clava, which has a great vibe and people from all walks of life.
  • For more hipster style bars, Red October is the place to go.
  • Streak is a summer favorite, with a lovely terrace to catch a beautiful sunset – plus, their mozzarella bar is delicious.
  • At night, Red October lights up with clubs everywhere, including the cool rooftop one Gipsy.
  • Jagger is also a great spot during summer with a more relaxed vibe in garden setting.
  • For the traditional Russian luxury experience, go to SohoRooms, a whole other world including all-night go-go dancers.

There are so many things to do in Moscow at night and during the day, you definitely need several days to explore this exciting destination.

Moscow is a must-see city, a city like no other ! I hope you will enjoy this Russian metropolis as much as I did!

Wonderful stuff! I’ve been to Moscow, but not properly – it’s a long story lol!

Anyhoo, my next thing is to fly from Berlin to Moscow and then travel from there to Beijing via the Trans-Mongolian / Trans-Siberian train. Now, if only I could just find the time …!

I hear Moscow is very beautiful at night. I hope to get out there one day. A friend of mine went to St. Petersburg and had a great experience. Despite all the tension we see on the news with Russia and other Countries like the U.S. I wonder what the sentiment is with Russians and foreigners visiting their country for tourism. Especially Americans.

that looks like quite a beautiful place. 🙂

  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉

Things to do Moscow blog

In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!

  • Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
  • Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
  • Entry tickets. 500 RUB.

Museum to see

Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
  • Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
  • Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

  • Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
  • Prices. 2200 RUB per person
  • Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

There are so many amazing places to visit in Moscow, with world famous highlights such as the Kremlin and the Saint Basil cathedral. Besides the touristic spots in Moscow, there are also plenty of unique places to visit. Russia’s capital is undoubtedly a very cool city, with many unique things to do.

In this article you can find popular sights to visit, but also more unique places to visit in Moscow. And from the most beautiful cathedrals to the famous Moscow kremlin. You’ll definitely have a blast if you visit these 27 amazing spots in Moscow!

27 Places to visit in Moscow

1. café pushkin.

Café Pushkin in Moscow is a fantastic spot to have lunch or dinner. It feels as if you're eating right in the middle of an amazing library.

Café Pushkin is probably a dream come true for book lovers from all around the world. In this incredible restaurant you basically eat in a library. The restaurant is located in am impressive Baroque mansion with three levels. You can choose to eat in the Library Hall and the Mezzanine, the Fireplace Hall or the Pharmacy Hall – the library is up the stairs – and I definitely recommend the library. It’s just more of an experience! Here bookcases rise to the beautiful high ceilings.

Café Pushkin opened its doors in 1999 and is based on the famous French song about Moscow by Gilbert Bécaud called “Natalie”. The location of the Café is also very significant, as you can find Pushkin Café on the Tverskoy Boulevard, where Alexander Pushkin could be found on a regular basis.

We went to Café Pushkin for lunch, as we thought dinner might be a bit above our budget. Café Pushkin is also more expensive than most restaurants in Moscow, but if you can afford it, it’s definitely worth a visit. The restaurant is very fancy and the dresscode is smart elegant. We had a great time here and it was such a unique experience to have lunch here between all the old books!

2. White Rabbit

If you're looking for an Instagrammable hotspot in Moscow, then definitely go to White Rabbit. White Rabbit offers an amazing view over Moscow.

White Rabbit in Moscow is considered to be one of the best restaurant in the world . At this famous restaurant you can enjoy a world-class European menu with Russian influences. Next to the food, the view is the biggest reason that many people visit White Rabbit. The restaurant is completely located under a glass dome on the 16th floor of Smolenskiy Passage. Go here during the sunset and your mind will be blown by the beautiful view.

The name White Rabbit (based on the famous Alice in Wonderland) is very fitting, as it was quite a hassle to actually find the restaurant. We went into Smolenskiy Passage and asked a lady at the information desk where we can find it. She brought us to a “secret” elevator that brought us to the 16th floor. So if you can’t find it on your own, ask someone!

3. Strelka Bar

For a great view over the Moscow River and christ the saviour cathedral while sipping on a cocktail, you should definitely go to Strelka Bar in Moscow. The perfect time to visit Strelka Bar is during the sunset.

We wanted to visit the beautiful Cathedral Of Christ The Saviour, and found Bar Strelka, an amazing hotspot in Moscow. Bar Strelka has a terrace that offers a great view over the Moskva river and the Cathedral. We went here quite spontaneously during sunset and there wasn’t a table left for dinner, but luckily it was possible to have a drink here. Actually, when you go for a drink, you can get one of the best seats available, as you can just take a seat on one of the barstools at the far end of the terrace (see the picture above!).

We ordered white wine (sauvignon blanc) for about 6 euros per glass. Bar Strelka also offers all day breakfast, lunch, dinner and tapas. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset in Moscow!

4. Varenichnaya №1

This Russian restaurant in Moscow is definitely worth a visit! It's actually part of a big chain, but each restaurant has its own interior, although they all have details from Soviet Union. Really cool place to try some delicious Russian dumplings.

One day my boyfriend and I were walking back from the Kremlin, hungry and a bit tired after all the sightseeing, and we just wanted to sit down and order food and drinks. Varenichnaya №1 was the first place we stumbled into, and even though it didn’t look like much from the outside, I was pleasantly surprised once we took place at our table. And I was even happier when the food came, because it was delicious. Especially the Russian dumplings!

I soon learned that Varenichnaya №1 is actually a chain restaurant with 15 locations around Moscow. After our initial visit we also went to another location. Each location has a different interior, but all in the theme of a typical Soviet flat. The restaurants are decorated with colours and cool items from the Soviet era, such as old televisions, camera’s, pictures and books. Even the waiters and waitresses wear old school uniforms from that era.

On their very extensive menu you can find authentic Soviet cuisine such as pelmeni and vareniki dumplings, which I can highly recommend. It might be a chain restaurant, but it’s a great and accessible place to try Soviet dishes.

5. Eliseevsky Store

visit friends island acnh

If you need to get some groceries in Moscow, be sure to pick the right supermarket with the best produce. Eliseevsky Store isn’t an ordinary supermarket, no. It looks and feels more as if you’re standing in a grand palace, with beautiful neo-baroque details, big chandeliers and even painted portraits.

Eliseevsky Store is located in a historic mansion, right in the historic center of Moscow on Tverskaya street. Even though it may feel as if you’re in a grand palace, it really is a supermarket where locals do their daily shopping.

One of the most fanciest malls ever. This photo was taken from one of the "bridges" in the Gum mall in Moscow.

Another impressive place to go shopping is the famous GUM department store. This mall can be found in many Russian cities and is known as the State Department Store. The most famous GUM department store is pictured above and can be found in Moscow near the Red Square in the Kitai Gorod area.

The impressive building with three parallel arcades was built at the end of the 19th century by architect Alexander Nikanorovich Pomerantsev. After a renovation in 1953, GUM in Moscow became the biggest and fanciest department store in the Soviet Union.

At GUM you can find many expensive luxury stores with famous brands. I wasn’t able to afford anything here, but it’s definitely still worth a visit. Just walk around and admire the impressive architecture. Also, be sure to visit Gastronom No. 1. Here you can buy all sorts of Russian delicacies of high quality.

7. Izmailovsky Kremlin

visit friends island acnh

Izmailovsky market is a fantastic large, outdoor shopping market to get Russian souvenirs, paintings, old camera’s, propaganda posters from the Soviet Union, second hand clothing and more. It’s located a bit out of the city center of Moscow, but definitely worth a visit. I would even say that it’s one of the top spots to visit in Moscow.

You can find a flea market and the Izmailovsky Vernisazh at the Izmailovsky Kremlin. The latter offers lots of souvenirs and all sorts of (handmade) items from all over Russia. At the flea market you can buy all sorts of antiques, camera’s, old books, furniture and more.

It was definitely one of the most interesting flea markets I’ve ever been, mostly because its located inside the Izmailovsky Kremlin (kremlin is the Russian word for fort) . With the Izmailovsky Kremlin they wanted to imitate the Russian architecture of the 18th century. While you walk around the stalls and browse through the Russian handcrafts, your attention will also be drawn to all the beautiful architecture and details of the kremlin.

Next to shopping, you can buy some popular Caucasian food at one of the stalls. Perfect if you’re hungry after all the souvenir shopping!

TIP: The best time to visit the Izmailovsky market is during the weekends, as there are a lot more stalls. Also, if you’re planning on buying a matroesjka doll, make sure to check how many dolls it contains. Some matroesjka dolls only have three inside them, which isn’t really what you want of course.

8. Cathedral Of Christ The Saviour

visit friends island acnh

Cathedral Of Christ The Saviour is a popular sight in Moscow. It’s a beautiful piece of Russian Byzantine architecture, with golden domes, statues and intricate details. This Russian Orthodox church is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow, making it the most important cathedral in Moscow.

You can find the cathedral (the official name is Cathedral Temple of the Christ the Saviour (the Redeemer) of the Patriarch of Moscow) in the center of Moscow next to the Moskva River. The cathedral is easily located close to the Kremlin and the Peter the Great Statue.

9. Peter the Great Statue

visit friends island acnh

This photo of Peter the Great Statue was taken from the bridge that takes you to the Cathedral Of Christ The Saviour.

The Peter the Great Statue is a 98 meter high monument of Peter the Great located next to the Moskva River. Peter the Great was a Russian czar in the late 17th century and one of the tallest rulers in Russian history.

The statue has actually gotten quite a bit of controversy when it was built, as it’s considered to be one of the ugliest statues in the world. It has even been named the Moscow Monster and it’s hated by most Muscovites.

I must confess that it isn’t one of the most beautiful statues I’ve seen, but a quick glance from the bridge opposite the statue doesn’t hurt. The fact that many find it so ugly made it even more interesting to me.

10. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

visit friends island acnh

The world famous Saint Basil’s Cathedral is a true landmark of Russia and can be found on the Red Square in Moscow. It was originally built between 1555 and 1561 to celebrate conquering the city of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible.

The design of the Saint Basil’s Cathedral is based on Russian old wooden churches. The colourful cathedral is certainly an eye-catcher and one of the most touristic spots we’ve encountered in Moscow.

11. Kremlin and the Red Square

visit friends island acnh

At the center of Moscow you can find the famous Kremlin and the Red Square. The Red Square can be visited day and night. During our visit a part of the Red Square was closed to the public for a few days, as there was a military event. I’ve read that there are often all sorts of events held at the Red Square so be sure to check beforehand.

The most popular sight in Moscow is definitely the Kremlin. Inside the walls you can find a beautiful collection of churches, palaces and more. Every tourist in Moscow has the Kremlin high on its list, that’s why it’s a great idea to buy a ticket beforehand, so you can skip the line .

If you’re planning on buying your tickets on the spot, be in for a bit of a hassle. The tickets can be bough at the official ticket office at the Alexandrovsky Sad (Alexander Garden) right of the entrance. Here you can buy not just one, but all sorts of tickets, so be sure to know what you want to visit before you buy your ticket.

The four next spots can all be found in the Kremlin of Moscow.

12. Cathedral of the Annunciation

visit friends island acnh

This beautiful Russian Orthodox church can be found in the Kremlin of Moscow. It’s dedicated to the Annunciation of the Theotokos. It once used to be the personal chapel for the Muscovite tsars, nowadays it serves as a part of the Moscow Kremlin Museums.

13. Cathedral of the Dormition

visit friends island acnh

Another beautiful piece of architecture that can be found in the Kremlin of Moscow. The Cathedral of the Dormition is also known as the Assumption Cathedral or Cathedral of the Assumption. This Russian Orthodox church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos.

14. Ivan the Great Bell Tower

visit friends island acnh

The Ivan the Great Bell Tower is a church tower inside of the Kremlin in Moscow. As the three Russian Orthodox cathedrals don’t have their own bells, it was built for in 1508 with the purpose to be their belfries. The tower is actually the tallest building inside the Moscow Kremlin.

15. Tsar Bell

visit friends island acnh

The famous Tsar Bell is the biggest bell in the world. It has never been used. Back in 1737, while the bell was still in the workshop, a large fire raged in the Kremlin. Firefighters, who meant well, put the bell under water, which is how a big chunk of the bell broke off.

16. Kitaj Gorod

visit friends island acnh

On the east of the Kremlin you can find Kitaj Gorod neighbourhood. If you take a stroll around this neighbourhood, you will find lots of churches, shops and government buildings. Kitaj Gorod is actually one of the oldest areas of Moscow. Because of all the narrow little streets, it feels a bit different than the rest of the big city.

17. VDNCH Park

visit friends island acnh

VDNCh park is a huge permanent exhibition and amusement park in the North of Moscow. If you translate the abbreviation the name means: Exhibition of Achievements of Nationa Economy. Here you can find all sorts of buildings, fountains, botanical gardens, restaurants, museums and more.

TIP: Be sure to take your time (start early!) and plan your visit wisely. Especially if you’re planning on doing some activities or eating at one of the restaurants. During our visit to VDNCh park, we tried to get a table at two different restaurants for lunch and we eventually had to wait about one hour before we actually had our food.

18. Museum of Cosmonautics

visit friends island acnh

If you’re looking for a fun and interesting museum, then be sure to go to the Museum of Cosmonautics. The museum is located close to the VDNCh park, so you can make a whole day out of it! Once you get out of the VDNKh subway station, you can easily spot this 107 meter high structure with a rocket on top of it.

Underneath this impressive structure you can find the Museum of Cosmonautics. Here you can get a glimpse of the glorious years of the Soviet Union space program. There are lots of space objects to admire, such as space suits, old satellites and more. I though it was really interesting and worthwhile.

19. Gorky Park

visit friends island acnh

The famous Gorky Park, or its full name: Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure, is a big central park in Moscow. This eco-friendly park has had a complete transformation since the Communist times in the Soviet Union, and there are no longer funfairs or stalls with junkfood.

Now when you visit Gorky Park you can enjoy the beautiful rose gardens, trees, fountains, cafés and lots of areas where you can really chill out. There’s even a beach with a beach bar, skate park, beach volley bar field, ice rink and you can play table tennis.

But it’s simply also the perfect area for a stroll in nature. Because Gorky Park is so big, you can really take a breath here and distance yourself from the busy city of Moscow.

20. Children Are the Victims of Adult Vices on Bolotny Island

visit friends island acnh

On Bolotny Island you can find a special group of bronze statues with a special message. These sculptures are made by Russian artist Mihail Chemiakin. The 13 statues portray the defects of adults, such as prostitution, drug addiction, alcoholism, indifference, sadism, war, theft and more. In the middle of these statues stand two children, a girl and a boy, who are unaware of all that is surrounding them. The centrepiece is the sculpture that depicts indifference. It’s an interesting work of art that definitely makes you think.

21. Bolshoi Theatre

visit friends island acnh

If you want to experience more of the Russian culture, why not visit the Bolshoi Theatre ? Here you can enjoy ballet and opera performances in one of the most historic buildings of Moscow. Watching a ballet or opera here is definitely a bucket list activity, as the Bolshoi ballet and Opera are amongst the most renowned ballet and opera companies in the world.

This historic building was opened on Tsar Alexander II’s coronation day, which as on 20 October 1856. Throughout time the building was rebuilt and renovated several time. Also, did you know that this landmark is printed on the Russian ruble banknote?

22. Komsomolskaya Station

visit friends island acnh

One of the things that I found so interesting about Moscow were the gorgeous metro stations. Instead of just being plain and functional, lots of the metro stations have beautiful chandeliers, Soviet mosaic decorations, classical paintings, large statues and beautiful details. The last few places to visit in Moscow in this list are all beautiful metro stations. Buy a metro card and start exploring!

Komsomolskaya Station is pictured above and is definitely one of the most famous metro stations in Moscow. The yellow ceiling and impressive chandeliers bright up the station hall. Lots of gold and beautiful details adorn the walls, pillars and ceilings.

23. Novoslobodskaya Station

visit friends island acnh

Another impressive metro station in Moscow is Novoslobodskaya Station. The pillars of the station are decorated with illuminated colourful stained glass. In total you can find 32 of these pillars with impressive glass decorations and at the end of the station you can admire a mosaic with the name Peace Throughout the World.

24. Kiyevskaya Station

visit friends island acnh

At the Kiyevskaya station you can find beautiful paintings on the ceilings. The chandeliers illuminate the station hall beautifully. The most impressive part of the station is the huge mural at the end of the central hall.

25. Ploschad Revolutsii Station

visit friends island acnh

Ploschad Revolutsii Station is one of the most famous metro stations in Moscow. It’s named after the Revolution square, which is right above the station. In this hall you can find 76 bronze sculptures, depicting the people of the Soviet Union, such as soldiers, writers, athletes, industrial workers and schoolchildren.

One thing you’ll notice here is that people rub the nose of the dog statue, which is why the bronze colour has faded. The same is the case for the rooster sculptures in the Ploschad Revolutsii Station. The belief is that patting the dogs nose and the rooster brings you good fortune, so it’s worth a try. Right?

26. Prospekt Mira Station

visit friends island acnh

The impressive chandeliers and gorgeous off white ceiling is what makes Prospekt Mira so beautiful. The marble pillars are beautifully decorated. Because the station is located near the Botanical Garden the decoration is depicting harvest and agriculture in the Soviet Union.

27. Belorusskaya Station

visit friends island acnh

And the last metro station in this list is the Belorusskaya Station, filled with gorgeous mosaics and incredible details. The main theme in this station is Life and Culture of Belorussia, the biggest ally of Russia. In this station you can also find an impressive statue that depicts Belorussian guerrillas.

Enjoy Moscow! Hopefully these 27 popular and unique places to visit in Moscow will make your stay even more memorable.
