Photography

I have sixteen photo galleries containing 800+ adventure travel-related photos. I’ve shot these on various trips and projects, ranging from ski mountaineering in Iran, solo ski touring through the Balkans, documenting the life of a hunter-herder in Tajikistan, paddling down Siberian rivers, and visits to some of Central Asia’s mountains and deserts.

All of my photographs are available to license for any commercial purpose. If you’re after imagery, please e-mail me at [email protected].

My photography has been published in the following outlets:

Russia Beyond the Headlines logo.

Kyzyl Kum Desert, Uzbekistan

Close portrait photo of exhausted desert runner with eyes closed.

The Kyzyl Kum – meaning red sands in Turkic languages – is the 15th largest desert in the world. Divided between central Uzbekistan, northern Turkmenistan, and southern Kazakhstan, the desert is located in an Italy-sized depression and bookended by the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya rivers.  Click here  to see more photos of the Kyzyl Kum Desert.

Mt. Damavand, Iran

Two Afghan porters sat outside a Damavand mountain hut, smiling for the camera.

Iran’s Mt. Damavand is the highest peak in the Middle East and also Asia’s highest volcano. Less than a few hours’ drive from Tehran – the country’s capital city – the 5,610m peak has more than a dozen routes to the summit and is a much sought after objective for skiers, trekkers and mountaineers in pursuit of the Volcanic Seven Summits. Click here to see more photos from Mt. Damavand, Iran.

The Dinaric Alps, Balkans

Skier with heavy bag on his back coming towards camera.

Spanning 650km along the edge of the Adriatic Sea, the Dinaric Alps is a mountain range in southeastern Europe. Many of its lesser-visited corners are in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, and Kosovo. Click here  to see more photos from the Balkans’ Dinaric Alps.

Grense Jakobselv, Norway

Wide angle view of Jakobselv River's tidal bay, with Russia on the leftside.

Grense Jakobselv, a deserted Norwegian settlement on the edge of Russia’s border, possesses a little-known fact for being the most north-easterly point of mainland Europe.    Click here to see more photos from Grense Jakobselv in Arctic Norway.

East Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan

Black and white photo in Kazakhstan of man lassoing an oil drum for fun.

Bordering Russia to the north and China to the south, East Kazakhstan province is a land of steppe, alpine mountains and rivers. Slightly smaller in size than Italy, and with a population of fewer than 1.5 million people, this far eastern corner of Kazakhstan is an ideal place for solitude-seeking visitors. Click here  to see more photos of East Kazakhstan.

Bayan-Ölgii, Mongolia

A Kazakh boy wearing a wool hat and traditional clothing holds a dombra musical instrument.

Mongolia’s western province of Bayan-Ölgii is famous for its hunters who use trained eagles for capturing prey. Up to 80% of the world’s eagle hunters live in the region, with the remainder in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and western China. Click here to see more photos from Bayan-Ölgii in western Mongolia.

Tuva Republic, Russia

A Tuvan musician with handlebar moustache coolly leaning against his accordion.

Tuva is a semi-autonomous republic in southern Siberia and borders Mongolia. It’s home to the geographical centre of Asia and also the Yenisei – Russia’s longest river. It’s a landscape of wild forests and steppe dotted with villages, semi-nomadic settlements and a vibrant throat singing and artisanal crafts making culture. Click here to see more Tuva Republic photos.

Altai Republic, Russia

A group of walkers ascend over grassy hills and beneath blue skies.

Local Altaians and Russians practising Tengrisim, Pagan Slavic religions, or Burkhanism, consider the Altai Republic as Siberia’s spiritual heart. The landlocked republic shares its borders with Kazakhstan and Mongolia and is home to Mt Belukha (4,506m), Siberia’s highest peak. Click here to see more Altai Republic photos, in addition to the Republic of Khakassia and Krasnoyarsk Krai.

Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan

Tajikistan is the smallest country in Central Asia and is best known for its rugged, mountainous terrain. Click here to see photos from the Pamir Mountains in eastern Tajikistan and the life of Orozbek, a Kyrgyz-Tajik hunter-herder living near the border of Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor.

Saryesik-Atyrau, Kazakhstan

A Kazakh herder with a baby goat in the Saryesik-Atyrau Desert.

The Saryesik-Atyrau Desert is located between the Ili and Karatal Rivers — on the southern shores of Lake Balkhash —and formed from an ancient river delta. Despite the bleak landscape, it’s home to goitered gazelle, wild boar and saiga antelope, and Asian wild ass .   Click here to see more photos of this wild expanse through  Jamie Maddison’s  70-mile run through the region.

Ust-Yurt, Kazakhstan

A flat plateau of orange and white shattered rock stretches out in front of rocky towers in the Ustyurt.

The Ust-Yurt — meaning plateau in Kazakh — is a coastal desert region on the edge of the Caspian Sea, covering an area this size of Kyrgyzstan. The region sprawls out across Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and is characterised by vast salt pans and impressive sedimentary rock towers, escarpments and pinnacles. Click here to see more Ustyurt photos.

Danakil Depression, Ethiopia

Over one hundred metres below sea level, northeast Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression is an otherworldly landscape of sulphur springs, smoking volcanoes and salt pans. Despite its inhospitable nature, it’s home to the Afar — an ethnic Cushitic group spanning northern Ethiopia and parts of Djibouti and Eritrea. Click here to see photos from the world’s hottest inhabited place.

Caucasus Mountains, Georgia

The multicoloured balconies of an apartment block in Batumi on Georgia's Black Sea coast.

Bordering Russia to the north and lying on the Black Sea coast, Georgia bridges a cultural and continental divide between Europe and Asia. Similar in size to Ireland, it’s a country with a diverse range of landscapes from 5000m+ alpine peaks, Samtskhe-Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli province’s rolling expanses of verdant grassland, and the Mediterranean climate of Kakheti’s wine-growing region near Azerbaijan’s border. Click here to see photos of Georgia.

Wakhan Corridor, Afghanistan

Older Wakhan man with hard scarf wrapped around his head and a white beard.

Northeast Afghanistan’s Wakhan region — which also includes parts of eastern Tajikistan — is one of the country’s remotest areas. Unlike other provinces, the Wakhan has remained untouched by conflict. Its quiet mountain valleys, picturesque villages and infrequently visited network of trails makes it one of Central and South Asia’s outstanding travel destinations. A painter looking out to see and painting

Want to take better travel photos? Think like a landscape painter.

Wielding paints, canvases, and creative eyes, artists reveal how to see—and document—nature and cities.

The land doesn’t demand your attention the way billboards do, or traffic lights, or people with their bright clothes and private thoughts. Landscapes aren’t static, but they’re not as fast-moving as the rest of our world. Even urban landscapes, with their ever-present teardowns and build-ups, backdrop most of the art we consume, from films to photographs. But if you stop and focus, as landscape painters do, there’s depth in the world around us and stories unfolding in the foliage, the soil, even in the garbage.

Landscape painters see the world differently than most travelers do. Their eyes have been trained to seek the horizon, read the light, and understand subtle variations in weather.

It’s part of the job, explains painter Timothy Wilson . For the past two years, he’s been working on a series of images inspired by the landscapes of Maine Coast Heritage Trust . He’s visited over a dozen of the trust’s nature preserves on the Maine coast, painting on cliffs, islands, in marshes and bogs—even from the seat of his kayak.

He experiences the parks the way any traveler might, eyes open to the wonder of the rugged landscape. But instead of snapping a photo for Instagram, Wilson stops and sets up an easel. “It stops me from looking at my phone,” he says. “Instead of checking again and again, I look at the landscape. I become enmeshed. It feels wonderful.”

Abstract view of rocks and the sea

You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate the natural world. Anyone can stop and marvel at a sunset. But thinking like a landscape artist can help travelers become better at seeing what’s around them. Next time you hit the road, make sure you have a sketchbook—or even just a cellphone—on hand to capture and compose. Any trip can be an artists’ retreat if you let it.

Find your footing

To absorb a landscape, be it a desert or a marsh, the first step is to find a vantage spot. “When I’m working, I’m carrying my own heft and the heft of my gear,” Wilson points out. “While I like the fluidity of the earth, I don’t enjoy walking through smarmy sandy areas to get to where I’m painting. I like having solid ground under my feet.”

Instead of worrying about sinking into the mud, or slipping on seaweed, Wilson sets his easel on a well-trodden hill, a dry flat rock, or a place where the seaweed has matted down thickly. “In order to be a good observer of nature, you have to have a good place to stand.”

(See why Maine has inspired artists for two centuries.)

This is equally true for casual photographers. It takes time to compose a good image, even just snapping one for Instagram. It’s worth finding a place off the main trail to stop and ponder the world beyond.

Wilson often paints the sea, which gives his works a strong horizon line. While her process is different, New York City -based landscape painter April Gornik also focuses on creating strong, moody images that feel timeless (and occasionally a little haunting). She tends to look first at the world around her, then paints a landscape back in her studio. “When you travel,” she says, “you deliberately dislocate yourself. So you have to relocate yourself. It’s a healthy thing for people.”

While Wilson finds his footing in a very literal manner, Gornik encourages travelers to reach a place of ease, a sense of comfort within discomfort. “The landscape is the other, the ultimate other,” she says. “Art is about taking the leap, becoming familiar, finding yourself.”

Embrace the weather

Most travelers hope for bright, sunny days, but there’s an upside to stormy weather. Overcast skies create a different quality of light , one that both landscape artists and portrait photographers adore. Landscapes that veered a little moody and dark show up in works by the Florida Highwaymen , a group of Black painters active in the mid-20th century.

They practiced “fast painting” and sold their works from the trunks of their cars along major highways, often capturing stormy skies, palms beset by wind, waves crashing on the shore, and slightly ominous backcountry rivers. The Highwaymen weren’t necessarily storm chasers, but their works depicted Florida as an atmospheric, turbulent environment, full of heat and water and life.

A painting in a studio

It’s highly effective, points out Wilson, to glance upward and observe the clouds. “Painting is a science,” he says. “The air changes what you see. Things that are closer look warmer because of how the light particles bounce. When storms come, it throws everything into flux.”

(Learn how landscape painting helped to save Yellowstone.)

Kim Do , a landscape painter who lives in the Hudson Valley of New York (but has worked around the globe), also says he “loves to paint the weather.” He adds, “We humans are living at the bottom of an ocean of air. We’re the lobsters of our planet. We look up, and we see the weather.” Do says that painting the sky makes him feel connected to the landscape artists who came before him, like famed British painter John Constable , known for his moody way with clouds.

Seek color, find beauty

Noa Charuvi splits her time between Jerusalem and New York City, two urban environments rich in history and poor in green space. Yet her landscape paintings manage to capture both the energy of her hometowns and the vast beauty of their buildings. Her daily walks around Brooklyn frequently take her past construction sites, where she will stop and snap a picture. “I’m often drawn to a scene because I find a surprising potential for beauty,” she says. “In the construction sites, I’m drawn to certain colors.”

Charuvi emphasizes that even a half-erected skyscraper or demolition zone can provide a rainbow of inspiration: the bright yellow of caution tape, orange buckets for mixing cement, red bricks, and unfinished golden-hued wood. “The packaging materials for windows and insulation, often that’s pastel, pink or blue,” she says. “It all starts with color.” Finding palettes means Charuvi can pull joy from any scene, no matter how banal. There’s also something she likes about seeing history in the making. Cities are constantly changing. Buildings are being torn down, new ones are being built up. Landscape painting, she says, allows her to “make sense of the endlessness” that surrounds us. “It connects us,” she says.

It’s something we all can keep in mind when we’re exploring the world. There’s beauty in the everyday, in the decay, in the busy streets and in the signs of human life. You don’t have to create a perfect image of the Eiffel Tower every time you travel to Paris —sometimes, it’s more interesting to capture the commuters on the Métro or the pigeons on the mansard roofs.

Linger longer

Perhaps the biggest lesson travelers can learn from painters is this: absorbing and capturing your surroundings takes time. In order to create art or deeply appreciate a place, you have to slow down to observe, dwell, and imagine. Even a good photo doesn’t happen just because you’re looking at beautiful scenery. You have to take a moment to figure out, as Wilson puts it, “the feng shui of a landscape.”

“Lingering and contemplating is something we have to train ourselves to do,” explains Do. “I was painting in Barbados once, and a tourist bus would come by every hour or so. People would come and pour out of the bus, take one picture, and then move on.”

He spent an entire day in that one spot, watching people come and go. Maybe some of them got a nice snapshot, but their trip wasn’t arranged for the immersive work artists crave. Each of these painters emphasizes the significance of letting the world in. You have to absorb it, to hold it, and be held.

“There’s a certain awareness of your surroundings you get from making paintings,” Do says. “We’re immersed in our environments. It cradles us. It’s around us. When you feel that, it’s almost like we’re in the womb of our planet.” His paintings are highly detailed and evocative, and when you’re looking at one of Do’s Oculus landscapes, you feel immersed. That, he says, is the entire point. It’s why we travel, it’s why we make art. It’s that sense of deep, intense connection.

It can happen suddenly, but it doesn’t happen quickly.

30 Fantastic Photos from Iceland to Inspire Your Next Trip

Beautiful Iceland

Last month, I finally visited Iceland. It wasn’t the impossible budget destination people made it out to be .

The locals were warm and welcoming, took me around , and showed me their homes. They were incredibly hospitable, and I made a lot of Icelandic friends on my trip.

And, while locals make any destination better, what blew my mind was the magnificence of the natural landscape. It’s bewitching. You find yourself in a spellbound daze as you move from place to place, your eyes overloaded by all you’re seeing.

“How could such a tiny place have such a diverse and beautiful landscape?” you think to yourself as your jaw hurts from being open too much.

Over the course of 11 days, I wanted to scream from joy everywhere I went. The land is desolate, sparsely populated, and silent. That was the one thing I noticed — just how silent Iceland is.

There are no distractions, and I think that helps you form a deep connection with nature. You begin to feel its rhythm.

Today, I want to share 30 pictures from my trip in hopes of inspiring you to visit this country. I’m not the world’s best photographer, but it’s hard to take a bad picture in Iceland.

Sulfur pools at Hverir near Lake Myvatn in the north of Iceland

It’s a fun city with a lively nightlife. Be sure to spend at least a couple of days here!

Jökulsárlón flowing ice lagoon in the southeast of Iceland

Best of all, it’s free to visit and there is lots of parking too. Be sure to walk along the narrow river that leads to the ocean. You can see smaller glaciers wash out to sea or end up on the beach.

Fjords on the eastern seaboard that could rival Norway

While Geysir is no longer active, the spot is still popular on the famous Golden Circle tourist trail outside Reykjavik thanks to another active geyser nearby called Strokkur.

Jökulsárlón ice lagoon in the southeast of Iceland

If you can, try to visit early before the crowds. Lots of tour buses visit the Golden Circle these days!

the stunning fjords of Iceland

This is also one of the most popular waterfalls in the country. Try to visit before 10am to beat the crowds!

A moss-covered lava field in southern Iceland

I only managed to see a fraction of Iceland during my 11-day trip, but my visit lived up to my high expectations.

Book Your Trip to Iceland: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner or Momondo to find a cheap flight. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned. Start with Skyscanner first though because they have the biggest reach!

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. My favorite places to stay are:

Holy Land Pictures

Holy Land Pictures

I have put together a collection of my favorite photos of the Holy Land featuring some stunning images of Christian Holy Sites and Churches from Jerusalem, Nazareth, and the Sea of Galilee .

Our Favorite Holy Land Pictures

Did you know that over 400,000 people visit the Israel every year? Since the birth of Christianity over 2000 years ago in this ancient land, the Holy Land has constantly been a pilgrimage destination for Christians throughout the world, not to mention, people from all walks of life and religions. It is actually the considered to be the birthplace of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

Throughout the Holy Land, you will find important Christian shrines, from the north through to the south of the country and points in between.

In the Galil in the  north of Israel , you can ‘follow the footsteps of Jesus’ by visiting the  Sea of Galilee , known in Hebrew as the Kinneret. On the shores of the lake you will see the ancient synagogue of Capernaum where, according to the New Testament, Jesus miraculously healed, delivered, and spoke in the synagogue during his ministry.

So many wonderful photo opportunities in Israel and I have shared with you some of my true favorites.

Enjoy…

We would also invite you to  share some of your favorites  with us.

'Roughest landing': Watch video of plane bouncing off runway as it attempts to land at LAX

land travel picture

A Boeing 747 operated by Lufthansa Airlines ran into a couple of bumps as it landed at LAX Airport in Los Angeles.

Video footage of the landing, captured by Airlines Videos Live , shows the aircraft skidding on the runway and then bouncing off the ground as it attempts to land. The plane then takes off again, flying for a few minutes before successfully landing.

"What? Whoa, whoa, whoa," the commentator of the livestream could be heard saying. "We're getting that go around. Holy moly. Wow. That is the roughest landing I think we've ever caught on our broadcast."

A Boeing 747-8 Lufthansa flight was scheduled to land around 1 p.m. ET at LAX after a more than 11-hour flight from Frankfurt, Germany, LAX's website shows.

Columnist: Another Boeing plane issue? Don't fall for the headlines.

No injuries reported

Lufthansa Airlines, in an email statement to USA TODAY, said that Flight LH 456 from Frankfurt to Los Angeles had a "rough landing" Tuesday. 326 passengers and 19 crew members were on board the flight and no injuries were reported.

The airline said the plane later flew back to Frankfurt following "an assessment by the cockpit crew, a consultation with the technical department on site and in Frankfurt and an initial visual inspection," where it will undergo further inspection. Lufthansa did not specify if the plane flew back empty or had passengers on board.

Airline Videos Live captures planes as they take off and land at LAX Airport. The livestream was created in 2019 by Los Angeles TV News photojournalist Kevin Ray, according to the YouTube channel account description .

While Boeing incidents have been in the news in recent months after a series of high-profile incidents , aviation experts maintain you shouldn't worry about flying .

“We don’t have to worry that there’s something systemically wrong with aviation,” Clint Balog, an associate professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, previously told USA TODAY.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A pair of giant pandas will soon make the journey from China to the U.S., where they will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo as part of an ongoing conservation partnership between the two nations, officials said Monday.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said its caretakers recently visited China to meet the giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, ahead of their planned trip to Southern California. An exact date for the handoff hasn’t been set.

Yun Chuan, a mild-mannered male who’s nearly 5 years old, has “deep connections” to California, the wildlife alliance said. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao.

Xin Bao is a nearly 4-year-old female described as “a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears.”

“Our conservation partners in China shared photographs and personality traits of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, but meeting them in person was so special,” said Dr. Megan Owen, the alliance’s vice president of conservation science. “It’s inspiring as people from around the world come together to conserve, protect, and care for these special bears, and we can’t wait to welcome them to San Diego.”

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has a nearly 30-year partnership with leading conservation institutions in China focused on protecting and recovering giant pandas and the bamboo forests they depend on.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Child seriously hurt as number of dead rises after airstrike in Odesa seaside park

The Ukrainian authorities say the number of victims from a Russian airstrike in Odesa has risen, with many more injured. Listen to a Daily podcast on whether the UK should send troops to Ukraine as you scroll.

Live events elsewhere mean we are leaving our coverage of the Ukraine war there for the day.

The main development this morning was the rise in the number of people killed in a Russian strike on Odesa yesterday to five.

Read more details in our posts below - and we'll be back with rolling updates and analysis of the war soon.

At least two people have been killed in another Russian strike, this time targeting the northeastern city of Kharkiv, local officials say.

Six more have been wounded in the attack, which Governor Oleh Synehubov says was carried out using guided bombs, according to preliminary information.

The attack damaged a residential building in one of the city districts, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said.

Emergency services are on the scene, local officials say.

Yesterday, a woman was reportedly injured after a "series of explosions" hit the city, according to the mayor.

Russia denies targeting civilians in the war that is now in its third year.

As we reported yesterday, a Russian missile attack targeted an educational institution in a popular seafront park in the Black Sea port of Odesa.

The number of victims from that airstrike has risen, with five people now reported to have died.

Local officials had initially said four were killed.

Regional governor Oleh Kiper said in addition to those killed in the attack, one man died after suffering a stroke attributed to the strike.

Another 32 are said to be injured, eight of whom seriously - including a four-year-old child.

A pregnant woman and another child are also among the injured.

"Monsters, beasts, savages, scum, I don't know what else to say," Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov said.

"People are going for a walk by the sea and they are shooting and killing."

Video footage, which could not be immediately verified, showed people receiving treatment on the street alongside pools of blood.

One photo showed officials examining part of a missile.

Ukrainian navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said the strike was conducted by an Iskander-M ballistic missile with a cluster warhead.

Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian missile and drone attacks, particular port infrastructure.

Hello and welcome back to our coverage of the war in Ukraine.

Yesterday a Russian attack on the port city of Odesa killed at least four people, while dramatic footage showed a massive education facility ablaze in the aftermath.

Here are the other key events to get you up to speed on from the past 24 hours:

  • More than 30 Ukrainian conscripts have died while trying to cross the border illegally to avoid mobilisation, a Ukrainian official said;
  • The Duchess of Edinburgh met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine, in what marks the first visit to the country by a member of the Royal Family since the war begin;
  • Debris recovered from a missile that landed in the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv on 2 January was North Korean, according to the United Nations;
  • NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg visited Kyiv for a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy;
  • In a joint news conference, Mr Stoltenberg said NATO allies had "not delivered" on their military aid pledges to Ukraine in recent months, saying that "serious delays" had led to negative consequences on the battlefield;
  • Mr Zelenskyy also called for the delivery of Western weapons to Kyiv's troops to be sped up;
  • Russia's defence ministry claimed its forces have taken control of the village of Semenivka in the eastern Donetsk region;
  • European Council president Charles Michel said the Russian invasion of Ukraine has given "new impetus" to calls for the EU to be enlarged beyond the 27 members;
  • Germany's public prosecutor's office said it was assessing whether a political motive was behind the killing of two Ukrainian soldiers in Murnau.

As we reported a short time ago, the Duchess of Edinburgh has met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine, in what marks the first visit to the country by a member of the Royal Family since the war begin.

Sophie met the Ukrainian president and first lady Olena Zelenska and delivered a message to them on behalf of the King, Buckingham Palace said.

You can watch footage from her trip here...

Throughout the day, we've been reporting on a Russian attack on the city of Odesa in Ukraine, which has killed at least four people.

These images show a burning educational institution building, which was struck.

Airline Finnair has said it is pausing flights to Tartu in eastern Estonia for the next month, due to GPS disturbances in the area.

"Finnair will suspend its daily flights to Tartu, Estonia, from 29 April to 31 May, so that an alternative approach solution that does not require a GPS signal can be put in place at Tartu Airport," the Finnish airline said in a statement.

Finnair last week had to divert two flights back to Helsinki after GPS interference prevented the approach to Tartu airport, although a spokesperson said the company did not now where the interference came from.

However, Tallinn seems certain as where the issues are originating.

"It is a fact that Russia affects GPS devices in our region’s airspace," Estonia's foreign minister said via a spokesperson.

Margus Tsahkna added that Estonia will raise the issue of GPS interference with its neighbours, and intends to discuss it with the EU and NATO.

GPS jamming and spoofing have grown worse in eastern Europe, the Black Sea and the Middle East, all areas close to conflict zones, according to industry group OpsGroup.

More than 30 Ukrainian conscripts have died while trying to cross the border illegally to avoid mobilisation, a Ukrainian official has said.

Andriy Demchenko, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service,  told Ukrinform that some men are prepared to pay "large sums" of money to groups promising to smuggle them across the border safely.

"Then they are faced with the fact that the route runs along a mountain river," he said.

Many conscripts have lost their lives after realising they didn't have the strength to swim the river, Mr Demchenko added.

"In total, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, about 30 people have died trying to cross the border illegally," he said.

Such attempts occur "every day", he said.

For context: Ukraine has been under martial law since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

It lets draft officers call up men of a certain age to fight on the front line.

In April, Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed off a new law lowering the age of draft-eligible men from 27 to 25, in a bid to boost troop numbers in his depleted ranks.

The Duchess of Edinburgh has met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Ukraine, in what marks the first visit to the country by a member of the Royal Family since the war begin.

Her visit is aimed at demonstrating "solidarity with the women, men and children impacted by the war and in a continuation of her work to champion survivors of conflict-related sexual violence", the palace said.

Three women and a man have died after a Russian attack on Odesa.

A further 28 people have been injured, including two children aged five and 16. A pregnant woman has also been hurt.

This video shows the aftermath of the attack.
