Access Scheme

SCONUL Access is a scheme which allows many university library users to use study spaces or books and journals at other libraries which belong to the scheme. Some library users may be able to borrow print books from other libraries too. To find out more about the scheme, who is eligible, and how it works, explore the SCONUL Access website .

We are members of the SCONUL Access scheme, welcoming students and staff from other universities to our library.

SCONUL Access is a joint agreement between most UK universities. It allows students and staff to use other academic libraries when they are travelling or away from their main campus.

We allow all SCONUL Access users to use the Arts and Social Sciences Library. Depending on your status, you may also to be able to access other libraries and borrow up to 5 books simultaneously from our collections.

To apply to the University of Bristol, you will need:

• Authorisation email from SCONUL (received after applying for  SCONUL Access )
• Passport-style photo
• University card

We are part of the SCONUL Access scheme, which allows you to use other university libraries. You can borrow books or visit for a quiet place to study. Most university libraries in the UK (and some in the Republic of Ireland) are part of the scheme.

You are eligible to apply if you are living in the UK or the Republic of Ireland and are:

• an undergraduate or taught postgraduate student, registered on a module of 30 credits or more
• a postgraduate research student
• an employee on a permanent or fixed term contract

When your access period ends you can re-apply, as long as you are still eligible.

Joining or renewing SCONUL Access

You do not need an OU Library card to join the SCONUL Access scheme. You do not need to apply for an Open University Library card unless you are visiting the Open University campus library to borrow print resources.

You can apply for SCONUL Access or renew your membership at any time during your module. You must be fully registered on your module to do this. It can take up to 21 working days to process your application, so make sure you apply early enough.

Here are some tips for the SCONUL Access application form:

• Step 1: select ‘Distance Learning Student’
• Step 2: select ‘Open University’
• your OU Personal Identifier if you are a student
• or your Staff number if you are staff
• or your OU Library ID barcode if you already have one

When your application is approved, you will receive an official SCONUL Access Acceptance email. This will be sent to the email address you used on the application. Make sure to check your spam or junk folder, just in case. With this acceptance email, you can use any of the libraries on the list. You do not need to apply for each library.

It is important to contact your chosen host library prior to going there so you can confirm how they wish you to register, what services are available for your Band, and what documentation they will need to see together with the SCONUL Access acceptance email and an acceptable form of photo ID.

Acceptable photo ID are:

• Driving licence
• National ID card
• OU Staff card (with photo)
• Police / Customs / Home Office Warrant Card
• Forces ID card
• Photocard from another UK Legal Deposit Library (British Library, National Libraries of Scotland and Wales, Bodleian Libraries, Trinity College Dublin)

If you are unsure, please check with your chosen library which form of ID they will accept before visiting them.

NOTE : Please be aware that should you be under the age of 16, you would need your Parent/Guardian's consent to join the Sconul Access scheme. The online application form will have specific tick boxes for this information.

Visiting your chosen library

Some libraries may allow external users in their libraries during Summer/Vac periods, or be willing to provide other extra services that are not part of your Sconul Access. This could be computer facilities, online resources or reference only. Contact your chosen library to check what/if such services are available, before you visit.

To find out which libraries are currently accepting SCONUL Access students and staff visit the SCONUL Access website .

If you need Wi-Fi Internet access when you visit other libraries, you can use eduroam. Find out more about connecting to eduroam (requires login).

We are part of SCURL. This is a group that provides access to university and HEI libraries in Scotland. Most of the libraries that are part of SCURL are also part of SCONUL Access. You may be able to use a SCURL library that is not part of SCONUL, or without registering for SCONUL membership yourself. If you wish to do this, check that this is possible by contacting the SCURL library before you visit.

British Library (London)

You can apply for a pass for the British Library's reading rooms in St. Pancras, London or Boston Spa, Yorkshire .

For students and staff who are not based in the UK or Republic of Ireland, there are some international options.

We have lists of libraries in other parts of the world, and links to library catalogues. Access to libraries varies and books may not be in English. Have a look at our External Libraries and catalogues page .

For a set fee, you can get articles through Secure Electronic Delivery (SED) with the British Library On Demand .

You may be able to arrange inter-library loans. Contact your local public library or the National Library of the country you are in. Find yours in this list of National Libraries .

The British Council is a worldwide organisation that helps people to access education in English. They have a database of libraries and services in many countries. There may be a charge to join, which varies from country to country, and the services that are offered will vary. Search for 'Library' on the British Council website .

All public libraries in the UK have internet enabled computers for everyone to use. They can be very popular, so you may have to book. These computers may be free or there may be a small charge. Most libraries charge for printing.

Some other computer facilities may be available in your areas, such as the UK online centres .

Soas library: sconul access.

SCONUL Access is a reciprocal scheme which allows many university library users to borrow or use books and journals at other libraries which belong to the scheme. The scheme covers most of the university libraries in the UK and Ireland.

SOAS Library enables borrowing access from other University or Colleges in the scheme as follows:

• Band A: Staff and research students
• Band B: Part-time, distance learning and placement students
• Band C: Taught postgraduate students

Note : SOAS Library no longer offers reference access for Undergraduate students under Band R due to demands for space and resources. As this is a reciprocal scheme, SOAS Undergraduate student cannot access other institutions under Band R.

Visit: SCONUL Access enter your status, select the library you would like to visit and complete the application form.

• You will then receive an e-mail (allow a minimum of 2 working days) regarding your acceptance into the scheme - you only need to apply once
• Once you have the e-mail, take a copy of this and your SOAS ID with you to the Library you would like to visit

Please note the following are not eligible under the SCONUL Access Scheme:

• SOAS Alumni
• Staff at SOAS under Academic Hospitality
• Summer School students
• Language Centre students

Some University of London Colleges may not be participating in the SCONUL Access Scheme, so please ensure that you check details on the SCONUL website before visiting. The SONUL Access Scheme does not affect existing reciprocal arrangements between SOAS and other University of London Colleges.

1. You must reapply for library access if your approval has expired

• Do not visit an institution until your new application has been approved.
• All information about applying for the Access Scheme is available on the SCONUL website .
• Your own institution’s library is the body responsible for considering and processing your application. Please be patient and allow them time to deal with your application.
• before you contact your library
• before you contact a library you wish to visit or before contacting SCONUL.
• Please remember access granted under the Scheme is a privilege and not a right.

2. Allow time for your application to be processed

• An extremely high volume of applications is being processed.
• How long your application takes depends on how many applications your institution receives.
• In some cases you may need to wait up to 4 weeks.
• Do not pressure library staff at your home institution - it will not speed up your application!
• Do not call the library you wish to visit or the SCONUL office about your application - it will not speed up the process!

3. Check on the day you would like to visit whether the institution you would like to visit is participating

• This allows for any sudden changes to pandemic-related restrictions.
• Check online at https://www.access.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access .

4. Prior access does not mean current access

• Some institutions that previously participated in the scheme are not participating at this time.
• You are not guaranteed access to an institution because you previously used it.
• Check before you visit! https://www.access.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access .  

What is the SCONUL Access Scheme?

There are four 'bands' of membership:

• Band A Borrowing: Research students and academic staff
• Band B Borrowing: Part-time undergraduates and postgraduates
• Band C Borrowing: Full-time postgraduates 
• Reference Band: Full-time undergraduates. 

Borrowing entitlements are set by each institution and may vary.

How Do I join the scheme?

If you are a registered student or academic staff at the University of Exeter and want to visit other participating libraries...

• Apply online via  SCONUL Access .   NB Only one application is required to access multiple libraries.  As part of this process you will see which institutions you are eligible to visit. 
• Wait to receive SCONUL Access reply email
• Follow instructions i n the email
• Read the   SCONUL Access User Guide
• Check with host institution before visiting. Access may be restricted during busy periods (e.g. exams)

To qualify for SCONUL Access you must be registered as a library user in good standing (i.e. no library debts or rule infringements).

What about E-Resource Access?

The SCONUL access scheme does not provide access to the e-resources of the libraries you visit.

Some libraries may provide a 'walk in access' computer service with access to some resources - you should check this with the library before you visit.  You are likely to need to register each time you wish to use the service. Access is often available via a sole PC within the library so availability will be limited. The service will not provide access to all resources are some are not licensed for walk in use.

You should rely on the UoE resources which can be accessed at a distance. Check to see if the library you are visiting is a member of EDUROAM. If so, you will be able to login to the wifi network of the institution you are visiting as a guest user and connect through to the UoE resources.

To connect to the EDUROAM service ...

• Choose your wireless icon and search for available wireless networks
• Select Eduroam and click the connect button
• When asked for your username, type it in followed by @yourhomeuniversity.ac.uk ([email protected])
• Provide your password and ‘Connect’

Use this service to search and locate books and journals throughout the collections of the UK research and specialist libraries.

SCONUL Summer Vacation Access

Undergraduate and postgraduate students are usually granted reference use of other SCONUL Higher Education Libraries during the summer vacation period.   See the  SCONUL Summer Vacation  Access  page  for more details.

This scheme is separate from the SCONUL Access scheme and you should always check in advance with any library you plan to visit for more detailed information on access riules, documentation required etc.

Public libraries are open to everyone for reference purposes.

To join a library and borrow books is free — you generally need to fill in an application card and bring proof of your address such as a bill less than three months old and proof of your signature, for example a credit card or passport. If you're under 18 you'll need an adult to fill in the form for you and provide proof of their address and signature.

The central reference library for each authority can be a good source of information and many public libraries have special collections in particular subjects.

We have institutional memberships of a number of organisations. Members of the University of West London in some cases have access to the institution library or other benefits.

SCONUL access FAQs

SCONUL access: UWL students/staff visiting other UK higher education (HE) Institutions

In most cases, eligible UWL undergraduate students applying to another UK university library will be given access for reference only, with no borrowing rights.

Academic staff, most postgraduate students and part time, distance learning and placement students are entitled to limited borrowing rights.

How to apply for SCONUL access

To apply for SCONUL access please complete the online application form .

• You should allow up to five working days for your SCONUL Access application to be processed. Please be aware that no applications can be approved at weekends.   
• You will receive two emails: 1.  to inform you that your application has been sent for approval 2. to confirm whether your application has been approved or declined

If your application has been approved, you must take this second email confirming your SCONUL access band and expiry date to the library you wish to visit, along with your UWL ID card.

Please note that your application may be rejected if you have outstanding charges or overdue loans on your UWL library account.

Are there any restrictions to access?

Access to other libraries is often restricted during exam periods. You are strongly advised to check the institution's own website for information before visiting it.

Can I use the wifi and computer facilities at other institutions?

If the institution you wish to visit also uses the Eduroam wifi connection you will be able to use this to connect your laptop or other devices.

You will not usually be able to use another institution's computer facilities or electronic resources.

Can I get SCONUL access during holiday periods?

UWL students are also entitled to use any UK university library that is a member of the SCONUL scheme during that institution's holiday period, for reference purposes only.

Note: you would need to show your Student ID card.

Can I access a resource without visiting another institution?

If another institution has a resource you are looking for but you don't want to visit it you may be able to get it via Inter-Library Loan .

What access to resources will I have?

In most cases, eligible undergraduate students will be given access for reference only, with no borrowing rights.

Academic staff, most postgraduate students, and part time, distance learning and placement students are entitled to limited borrowing rights as follows:

• Bands A-C – You can borrow up to four seven-day loan items. You may not borrow Reference, next day or same-day loans. 
• Band R – You can use the library for reference purposes. 

Your first visit

Any student wishing to use the Paul Hamlyn Library or Reading Campus Library through the SCONUL Access Scheme is required to register with us as a UWL Library SCONUL Access user.

You must bring with you: 

• a valid  library or student ID card  for your home institution

a copy of the email you will have received from your home institution granting permission to use the scheme. This can be printed or displayed on your phone

• a passport-style photo from you (please see guidelines below)

This initial visit must be from Monday-Friday only between 9am-5pm. You will be refused entry if you arrive outside of these hours for your initial visit. If you are unable to make this initial visit at these times, please contact  [email protected]  and we can see if we can help you.

What happens on this first visit?

At this first visit, a member of Library Staff will register you as a SCONUL Member with borrowing rights, or with Reference Only access.

Having registered you are welcome to use the library on that day. However, to access the University and library in future visits we will need to produce for you a UWL Library ID Card. To produce this we require a passport-style photo from you (please see guidelines below). Once we receive your photo your card will be ready to collect at your next visit (ID Cards take 48 hours to process and produce).

We will email you to confirm that your card is ready for collection.

Use of the library under this scheme is for the registered SCONUL Access Scheme member and cards are not transferable.

Misuse of the card will result in access being revoked and should you lose it, there will be a charge of £10 for a replacement.

Subsequent visits

Any student wishing to use the Paul Hamlyn Library through the SCONUL Access scheme is permitted to use the library at any time including overnight during term time 24/7 opening provided that you enter the building before 9:30pm. You will only be allowed access with the following pieces of ID which you are required to keep with you at all times and show to our security team on each occasion that you enter the building or to any other member of UWL staff upon request.

• Your home institution library or student ID card
• The UWL Library ID Card issued to you which must be visible at all times

You will not be allowed entry to the Paul Hamlyn Library after 9:30pm during 24/7 periods even if you have the required permissions.

Conditions of membership

Membership of the SCONUL Access Scheme for Students/Staff from Other UK HE Institutions visiting UWL is for one year and will terminate on 31 July each year.

If you choose to renew your membership, you will need to re-register with us by 31 July each year, otherwise, your membership will expire and your card will no longer work.

Should you choose to renew, your current card will be reactivated.  However, if you should choose not to renew, you must return your UWL ID card to us as it will no longer be valid.

All records are destroyed after 1 August each year unless you renew in which case your details are retained by UWL ID Cards until you cease to be a member of this scheme.

ID Cards are issued to the registered member and are not transferable. Misuse of a UWL ID card will result in suspension of membership with continuing access to UWL facilities prohibited.

Access to the UWL Library during UWL holiday periods

As stated above, our libraries exist primarily to support the teaching and research needs of our own students and staff. During busy periods, it may be necessary to restrict access to the libraries under this scheme, and we reserve the right to suspend new registrations and refuse entry where necessary.

Will I have access to wifi?

All SCONUL access members have access to the University wifi via Eduroam or as a guest. 

Are there any restrictions?

SCONUL access members are currently unable to:

• access UWL networked services including PCs, Macs, printers and Library e-resources
• borrow reference, next day or same-day loans
• use our lockers

How can I apply to use the UWL Libraries under the SCONUL scheme?

In order to use UWL libraries under the terms of this scheme, you will first need to complete the  online application form . If your application is approved you will be sent a confirmation email from your home institution. Please allow for up to seven days for your application to be processed, and note that your application may be rejected if you have outstanding fines or overdue loans at your home institution.

Note: Access to use our facilities applies only to the University libraries at our West London and Reading campuses. Access to the Reading Campus Library will only be during its scheduled opening hours.

UWL ID card photograph guidelines

The photograph you send us must meet the guidelines in the list below and must be a true likeness of you. The guidance below will help you send a suitable photograph and will help avoid the need for us to request another photograph. An appropriate passport-style photo taken on a mobile phone is acceptable. However, if you choose to use a professional photographer please ensure that the photographer is aware of the standards required.

The photograph must be:   

• In colour, not black and white  
• Taken within the last month  
• Free from shadows 
• Taken with your eyes open and clearly visible (with no sunglasses or tinted glasses, and no hair across your eyes) 
• Free from reflection or glare on glasses, and the frames must not cover your eyes (where possible, we recommend that you remove your glasses)  
• Free from red eye and with a neutral expression
• Of you facing forward, looking straight at the camera  
• Taken of the full head, without any covering, unless it is worn for religious or medical reasons
• Taken against a plain white, light grey or plain cream background

What is SCONUL Access?

Staffordshire University is a member of the SCONUL Access Scheme.

SCONUL Access membership allows you to use the libraries of other UK Universities who participate in the scheme.

Membership is free and provides visitor access and borrowing rights to staff, postgraduates, distance learners and placement students.

Full-time undergraduates can apply for reference access through the scheme.

To use the SCONUL Access Scheme, you must first apply to become a SCONUL member. To make an application visit the  SCONUL Access website .

Your SCONUL application must be accepted before you can visit other institutions’ libraries.

Your application with be processed by the Student Connect team at Staffordshire University.  if you have any questions please send an email to  [email protected]  

To be eligible, you must be "in good standing" with Staffordshire University Library, which means you will have no overdue loans or unpaid charges. 

Please plan your visits to other libraries carefully and check the website of the library you want to visit beforehand, as some libraries may apply their own restrictions, including periods of the year when SCONUL Access members cannot visit. 

You will be able to see a full list of participating institutions when you apply for membership.

Bands A, B, C  and  R can apply to join our library for access to our facilities and for  Bands A, B and C  borrowing rights  as stipulated.  Band R  is reference access only.

You will need to have

• Received your SCONUL approval
• Submitted a SCONUL Library Card request form including digital photo to Student Connect for your Library and Building Access card to be printed.  This must be emailed to us at [email protected]  before arrival.
• A form of photo ID (e.g. passport or driving licence) to be able to collect your library ID on arrival, plus your home institution ID.

While our primary aim is to support students and staff of the University in their study and research, we are also pleased to provide some Library access to members of the local community.

Before you come to the Library, read the relevant section below to get the most out of your visit.

Information for current UEA staff and students

Plan your visit

The Library is open to visitors from 07:00-19:00 every day. Outside of these hours access to the Library is via campus card only. Visitors will be asked to sign-in at the staffed Reception Desk to access the Library building. The Reception Desk is staffed at all times. 

The in-person Library Helpdesk is open from 09:00-18:00 Monday-Friday, and our live chat service is open 11:00-18:00 Saturday and Sunday. 

To reach the Library, go through or around the Student Union building. On the campus map we are building number 14.

Blue badge parking is available on street level, and the nearby lift in the Lecture Theatre building can be used to access walkway level and Library entrance. 

If for any reason you are on street level and unable to access a lift to walkway level please call us on +44 (0)1603 592993. We can assist users to enter the building on street level between 9.00am and 6.00pm Monday to Friday, and between 11.00am and 6.00pm Saturday and Sunday.

External membership of UEA Library

We are pleased to be able to offer external membership to UEA Library, which includes borrowing up to 10 items at a time, for a fee of £50 a year. The membership also provides you with a campus card which permits entry to the Library building 24/7.

If you wish to purchase access only membership, this is possible for just £10 a year. This fee covers the cost of printing you a campus card which permits entry to the Library building 24/7. It will not entitle you to borrow items from UEA Library. 

To apply for new membership, or to renew an existing membership, please download and complete the form below. Please complete the form electronically and email your completed form to [email protected] . We accept electronic signatures so there is no need to print the form in order to sign it physically. Payment for applications should be made by payment card when you come to collect your campus card. We cannot accept payment by cash or cheque.

Voucher of welcome

If you have received a ‘voucher of welcome’ we are very pleased to welcome you to UEA Library and extend our membership to you for free for one year. Please complete the form below and send to us along with your voucher, or simply bring your voucher to the Library Helpdesk during opening hours. Proof of address is not required. 

Sconul Access

UEA Library is a member of the SCONUL Access Scheme, a co-operative venture between higher education libraries. It enables staff, research students, full time and part-time postgraduates, distance learning and placement students to borrow materials from other libraries. Some institutions also allow full time undergraduates to access their libraries on a reference-only basis.

If your home institution is a SCONUL member and you are eligible to join you first need to apply to the scheme via the SCONUL Access website. Your home institution will need to approve your application and an email will be sent to you confirming your acceptance.

How to apply to the SCONUL Access Scheme for access to UEA Library

1. Visit the SCONUL Access website to make your application. 2. When your application has been processed, you should receive a confirmation email.  3. The next step to access UEA Library is to complete our application form - this will enable us to issue you a Library card. You can download and complete the application here:

Please complete the form online and email your completed form to [email protected] . You must also send us a copy of your SCONUL Access confirmation email, and a recent photograph. We accept electronic signatures so there is no need to print the form in order to sign it physically. 

4. We will contact you when your application is complete.

Please DO NOT visit UEA Library until you have heard from us and completed all the necessary steps for setting up your access.   

NHS Trust staff access

Eligible staff from the following institutions can apply for membership of UEA Library:

NBI Partnership Member Access

Eligible staff and research postgraduates from the member institutes of the Norwich Bioscience Institutes Partnership can apply for membership of UEA Library. Please complete the form below and send on to NBI Library to authorise.

Walk-in e-resources

Access to most of our e-resources such as electronic journals is limited by the terms of our licences to registered staff and students of the University with a UEA username and password.

We do have a limited range of resources available via ‘walk-in’ access. CCN students and visitors are able to access these resources from within the Library building.

For CCN students and staff, please login to any PC in the UEA Library, and then use the walk-in e-resource list below to select and use the resource you need.

Visitors may request a 'visitor IT login' in person from the Library Helpdesk between 09:00-17:00 Monday-Friday, and 11:00-17:00 Saturday and Sunday. In order to be given a login, you will be asked to complete a form which records your identity and that you agree to the UEA Conditions of Computer Use . You must provide us with photographic ID - we will accept a Passport, Driving Licence or National ID card for this purpose. Proof of address will not be required but you will need to tell us your full address including postcode. 

Once you have been issued with a login you will be able to use one of our dedicated visitor PCs located on Floor 0, and you can access our walk-in resources from the list below. Please remember this service is for academic access to our walk-in e-resources only and not intended for recreational use. This service is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and is intended for use during visitor access hours only which are 07:00-19:00 daily.

Do you know about the Access to Research Service available in Norfolk Public Libraries?

Students, independent researchers and small businesses can now access many of the world’s best academic papers across science, technology, medicine and other disciplines through their local libraries. This is the result of a unique collaboration between librarians and publishers, who have made their journal content available for free to UK libraries under a new initiative, Access to Research.  

The service is available in all 47 Norfolk Public Libraries. All you need to do to access the full-text of resources is visit Access to Research from your public library terminal. You can also see what is available accessing from elsewhere but you will not have access to the full text.  

Make a request from the Research Reserve

Some journals included in UEA Library Search may indicate that they are stored in our Research Reserve. You can request these to consult in the Main Library – you cannot borrow these items. Please use this form to make your request:

Journal volumes should be available for you to collect 2 working days after you make a request but we will be in touch to let you know when material is available for you. Please return items to the Library Helpdesk before 6pm. If you haven’t finished using the material that’s fine. Just let us know and we can keep it for you to look at another time. Once you have finished with it we will send it back to the Research Reserve.

Sconul Access Scheme This scheme enables UHI students and staff to use other university libraries in different parts of the UK

As a UHI student or staff member, you can access other libraries within the scheme.

• To join, visit www.access.sconul.ac.uk
• Complete Step #1 by selecting what kind of user you are and Step #2 by selecting the name of your institution and clicking on find
• You will then see a map of libraries you can apply to
• Click on the red marker on the map of the chosen institution and click on apply for access. Once approved, the approval can be used to access any participating university library. You need only select one.
• Complete the online library access application form and submit
• You will then receive an email to confirm your application has been sent*
• Once your application has been approved you will receive an email which you must print off and take with you to the institution along with your home university library or ID card.
• You will not be approved if you have overdue loans on your account, or owe any billed costs for the replacement of lost or damaged library items. If denied, you should get in touch with your UHI campus library to resolve any outstanding matters. Once resolved, you are free to re-apply.

The borrowing arrangements, for example, the number of books you may borrow, are at the discretion of each individual university. There may be some restrictions on the types of materials you can borrow, such as books in high demand at that particular institute.  You should also appreciate that local libraries, even academic ones, may not stock books or journals relevant to your area of study.

Note that licensing agreements usually restrict access to electronic databases to staff and students enrolled in that particular university or college.

Be prepared to abide by the rules of the library you wish to use, including any COVID restrictions and special measures. You will be responsible for any fines or replacement costs incurred.

SCONUL Access Band A

S taff (both academic and support staff) and research students.

Staff (both academic and support staff) and research students from institutions participating in the  SCONUL Access Scheme can apply for a borrowing account at Imperial College London Library.

To be eligible, you must be: 

• a permanent member of staff or a member of staff on a fixed term contract or
• a postgraduate research student registered for a PhD, MPhil or similar qualification awarded purely by research

Your membership entitles you to use all our libraries .

Imperial members wishing to visit other libraries under the SCONUL Access scheme should see Using other libraries .

How to register

To apply under the SCONUL Access scheme, fill out the online library membership application form , selecting the 'SCONUL Access’ option. Then visit the Welcome Desk in the Abdus Salam Library or one of our campus libraries, and provide:

• a copy of your SCONUL confirmation email for Band A
• a current ID card from your institution - if your ID card does not include your photo, you must bring additional photographic ID
• proof of your current address
• a current email address at your home institution's domain (not gmail, etc).

We will automatically renew your items for up to 6 months before they must be returned, unless they have been requested.

If an item is recalled you will need to return it by the due date. Library Services charges fines on recalled items.

Sign in to  Library Search to request an item which is out on loan. We will email you when it is available for collection. Your request limit is 3 at one time.

Using e-journals, e-books and databases

Your access to e-journals, e-books and databases is limited only to those permitted by the terms of our licences and only available within the Library. Their use is strictly for non-commercial purposes and you must adhere to licence restrictions.

Imperial is a member of eduroam, a service allowing students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to connect to the internet when visiting other participating institutions, see Visitors and guests .

How do I get SCONUL Access?

SCONUL Access for Queen Mary students and staff who want to visit other libraries

Queen Mary staff and students can register to use the SCONUL Access scheme. This allows you to visit many other UK University Libraries.  

SCONUL Access has four different ‘Bands’ determined by your level of study: 

Band A – staff and postgraduate research students 

Band B – part-time, distance learning and placement students 

Band C – postgraduate taught students 

Band R – undergraduate students 

To join the SCONUL Access scheme:  

Go to http://www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access  

Select your level of study (Step 1) and Queen Mary University of London (Step 2) 

Press Find 

Select a library you are interested to visit. Receiving access to one library automatically gives you access to all libraries in the scheme. 

Your application will be evaluated within 7 days. Please note that we will not be able to approve your application if there are any overdue items on your account. 

You only need to apply for SCONUL Access once. After your application has been accepted you will receive a confirmation email. Take a copy of this email with your Queen Mary ID along to the library you wish to visit. Please note that each library will have its own procedures for SCONUL visitors, so always check their website before your first visit.

UEA Library External Membership

Visitors to UEA Library are unable to borrow Library items. However, we do offer an external membership which allows visitors to borrow up to 20 items at a time for an annual fee of £50. 

We also offer an access only membership for £10 a year. This fee covers the cost of printing a campus card which will allow you access to the Library building 24/7.

Voucher of Welcome

If you have received a ‘voucher of welcome’ then we are happy to provide you with a UEA Library membership for free for one year. Please complete the form below and send to us along with your voucher, or simply bring your voucher to the Library Helpdesk during opening hours. Proof of address is not required. 

SCONUL Access

UEA Library is a member of the SCONUL Access Scheme, a co-operative venture between higher education libraries. It enables staff, research students, full time and part-time postgraduates, distance learning and placement students to borrow materials from other libraries. Some institutions also allow full time undergraduates to access their libraries on a reference-only basis.

If your home institution is a SCONUL member and you are eligible to join you first need to apply to the scheme via the SCONUL Access website. Your home institution will need to approve your application and an email will be sent to you confirming your acceptance.

How to apply to the SCONUL Access Scheme for access to UEA Library

1. Visit the  SCONUL Access  website to make your application. 2. When your application has been processed, you should receive a confirmation email.  3. The next step to access UEA Library is to complete our application form - this will enable us to issue you a Library card. You can download and complete the application here:

Please complete the form online and email your completed form to  [email protected] . You must also send us a copy of your SCONUL Access confirmation email, and a recent photograph. We accept electronic signatures so there is no need to print the form in order to sign it physically. 

4. We will contact you when your application is complete.

Please DO NOT visit UEA Library until you have heard from us and completed all the necessary steps for setting up your access. 

NHS Trust Staff Access

Eligible staff from the following institutions can apply for membership of UEA Library:

• Norfolk & Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Sir Thomas Browne Library)
• James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation trust (Sir James Paget Library)
• Norfolk & Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (Frank Curtis Library)
• Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Foundation Trust (QEH King’s Lynn Library)
• Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust (Ipswich Hospital Library & Learning Resources)

In order to access the library and use our self-service facilities, you must apply for a campus card by completing our membership form.

NBI Partnership Member Access

Eligible staff and research postgraduates from the member institutes of the Norwich Bioscience Institutes Partnership can apply for membership of UEA Library. Please complete the form below and send on to NBI Library to authorise.

Walk in E-resources

Access to most of our e-resources is limited by the terms of our licences to staff and students of the University with a UEA username and password.

However, we do have a limited range of resources available via ‘walk-in’ access. CCN students and visitors are able to access these resources from within the Library building.

For CCN students and staff, please login to any PC in the Library, and use the walk-in e-resource list below to select and use the resource you need.

For visitors, you can request a 'visitor IT login' in person from the Library Helpdesk between 09:00-17:00 Monday to Friday, and 11:00-17:00 Saturday and Sunday. In order to be given a login, you will be asked to complete a form which records your identity and that you agree to the  UEA Conditions of Computer Use . You must provide us with photographic ID - we will accept a Passport, Driving Licence or National ID card for this purpose. Proof of address will not be required but you will need to tell us your full address including postcode.

Once you have been issued with a login you will be able to use one of our dedicated visitor PCs located on Floor 0, and you can access our walk-in resources from the list below. Please remember this service is for academic access to our walk-in e-resources only and not intended for recreational use. This service is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and is intended for use during visitor access hours only which are 07:00-19:00 daily.

Access to Research Service  in Norfolk Public Libraries

Students, independent researchers and small businesses can now access many of the world’s best academic papers across science, technology, medicine and other disciplines through their local libraries. This is the result of a unique collaboration between librarians and publishers, who have made their journal content available for free to UK libraries under a new initiative, Access to Research.

The service is available in all 47 Norfolk Public Libraries. All you need to do to access the full-text of resources is visit  Access to Research  from your public library terminal. You can also see what is available accessing from elsewhere but you will not have access to the full text.

Research Reserve Requests

Journals stored in our Research Reserve are available to request for consult within the main Library. You cannot borrow these items. Please use this form to make your request:

Journal volumes should be available for you to collect 2 working days after you make a request but we will be in touch to let you know when material is available for you.

Please return items to the Library Helpdesk before 6pm. If you haven’t finished using the material, let us know and we can keep it for you to look at another time. Once you have finished with it we will send it back to the Research Reserve.
