Inverness to the Orkney Isles

  • Activity Overview: Ferry ride to Burray
  • Activity Level: Easy

We meet in Inverness, gateway to the Highlands, before traveling to the north coast to catch the ferry to Orkney. The Orkney Isles, about ten miles off the northern coast of Scotland, comprise an archipelago of about 70 islands. They boast some of Europe?s oldest and best-preserved Neolithic sites.

During our one-hour ferry crossing, we may spot a pod of dolphins riding the bow wave. Our destination is the island of Burray, just off the coast of Orkney?s main island, appropriately known by the locals simply as ?Mainland.? We settle in at our lovely hotel, built in 1860 as a fish store before it was renovated and transformed into a hotel in 1997. We enjoy a welcome dinner this evening.

Accommodations

Sands Hotel

Sands Hotel Burray, Scotland

Set in a 19th century building, the charming Sands Hotel is along the shore of Scapa Flow in the small fishing village of Burray. The modern and tastefully decorated rooms offer beautiful sea views overlooking Burray Harbor and Watersound Bay. The restaurant’s menu features the freshest local ingredients transformed into authentic Scottish specialties.

Coastal Hike & Skara Brae Stone Age Village

  • Activity Overview: Hiking
  • Activity Level: Easy to moderate
  • Activity Length: 2 hours (about 2.5 miles) elevation gain up to 650’

We begin our exploration with a spectacular hike along the dramatic coast from Brough Head to Marwick Head. Have your binoculars ready, as this is home to one of the largest seabird colonies in Scotland, including Herring gulls, Lesser-backed gulls and Long-billed curlew. After our walk, we visit Skara Brae, a Stone Age village which thrived for 600 years, between 3200 and 2200 BC. It remained buried under coastal sands for millennia until 1850, when a winter storm battered Orkney and stripped away the grass and sediment that had hidden it for so long. Its structures remained incredibly preserved under the sand.

We end our day at the Scapa whisky distillery, witnessing what goes into making Scotland?s prized spirit and sampling a wee dram for ourselves.

The Old Man of Hoy

  • Activity Level: Moderate
  • Activity Length: 4 hours (about 6 miles); elevation gain up to 720’

A short morning drive takes us past Scapa Flow. Sheltered by five of the Orkney Isles, it is one of the world?s great natural harbors, having hosted naval fleets from the Viking era to the time of World War II. But with its shallow, sandy bottom, it has also been witness to many shipwrecks. Upon arrival in Houton, we embark on a ferry to Hoy, the archipelago?s second largest island.

Our hike today traces the island?s dramatic coast, with sweeping views of some of Britain?s highest and most spectacular cliffs. The day?s highlight is the sea stack known affectionately as the Old Man of Hoy, a 449-foot tower of basalt soaring from a rocky point at the foot of the sea. It was first climbed in 1966, in a daring ascent led by mountaineers Sir Charles Bonington and Dougal Haston, and televised by the BBC. We?ll have amazing views of the Old Man from nearby cliffs, and might even spot some climbers clinging to its vertical walls. We return via the picturesque Rackwick Bay, with its crescent beach.

Orkney to the West Highlands

  • Activity Length: 1 hour (about 1.5 miles); elevation gain up to 165’

We ferry back to mainland Scotland today, then enjoy a scenic and leisurely four-hour transfer through the West Highlands to the picture-perfect village of Plockton. Along the way, we pause for photo opportunities and for a short hike into a cascading waterfall, where we might catch sight of salmon jumping against the torrent to get upriver.

In Plockton, there will be time to explore the waterfront lined with palm trees, perhaps meeting one of the artists who gather here to capture the area?s coastal charms on canvas. We close our day at the Plockton Inn, a cozy seaside spot boasting award-winning seafood and a friendly pub. If we a?re lucky, there wi?ll be local musicians playing traditional folk songs here.

Plockton Inn

Plockton Inn Plockton, Scotland

Set in the heart of the beautiful village of Plockton, in the West Highlands, the Plockton Inn is well known for its exceptional hospitality, award-winning seafood restaurant, and breathtaking sea views. Sample a local malt or ale in the lively pub while listening to traditional Scottish music of local musicians.

Isle of Skye

  • Activity Length: 3 hours (about 4.3 miles); elevation gain up to 400’

Today we take our cue from the beloved folk tune, The Skye Boat Song, and speed 'over the sea to Skye' to the tiny settlement of Elgol. Here, we board a boat to the remote bay of Loch Scavaig, just as Queen Victoria herself once did. This beautiful body of water is surrounded by the Black Cuillin Mountains, which serve as the backdrop for our gently sloping hike along their base. The trail skirts the shores of Loch Coruisk, whose wild beauty and rugged mountains inspired Sir Walter Scott and Lord Tennyson to capture the gorgeous landscape in verse.

*If joining our August 2023 departure, this day will be devoted to attending the Isle of Skye Highland Games. This open-air event dates to 1877 and takes place on a scenic headland with views of the harbour. Locals and visitors alike flock to the 'Games Field' to watch an array of athletic and cultural competitions including Highland Dancing in full tartan regalia, bagpipping, and the 'Heavy Events,' in which athletes compete in areas such as hammer throw, weight over bar, caber toss, and tug of war, all while wearing a kilt! We are free to watch the spectacle at the field and meander the craft and food stalls.

Plockton to Loch Ness

  • Activity Length: 3-4 hours, 6 miles, 1,000' elevation gain

Our day begins with a trail hike from our hotel in the village of Plockton. A steady and moderate ascent along even terrain rewards us at the summit with excellent views of Isle of Skye and the fishing village of Applecross. From here, we may peek at the village of Plockton a bit beyond the cairn. Our descent takes us through forested land and along the shore of a loch. We may be able to glimpse over the water to see a crannog — the remains of an ancient island dwelling.

A short drive after our hike delivers us to the Eilean Donan Castle. A Scottish icon set amidst magnificent vistas, it is easy to see why this is one of the country's most photographed spots. After a visit, we transfer to our lovely hotel in Fort Augustus — set at the southwest tip of the mysterious Loch Ness!

The Lovat

The Lovat Fort Augustus, Scotland

The Lovat is a landmark Victorian Loch Ness hotel overlooking the loch-side village of Fort Augustus. It is surrounded by stunning scenery, sitting at the southern tip of the mysterious deep waters of Loch Ness. This exceptional eco-friendly Highland hotel offers rooms of modern comfort combined with traditional aspects of Highland life, and views of the Highland mountains, Caledonian Canal or world-famous Loch Ness.

Glen Affric

  • Activity Length: 4-7 hours (up to 10 miles); elevation gain up to 1300’

Today is one of our most scenic days as we hike the trails of Glen Affric, widely regarded as one of Scotland's most beautiful valleys. Blanketed by Scots pines, the glen's slopes reach up to resplendent peaks that overlook the pristine waters of Loch Affric. There are countless options for great hikes in this glen, so we're spoiled for choice. Our guide will decide on the best hike which will ensure magnificent views of this unique wilderness of pinewoods and moorland. If you're up for it, we may hike to a summit for an elevated panorama across the numerous peaks of the Highlands.

Loch Ness to Inverness

  • Activity Overview: Scenic drive to Inverness and departures

After breakfast, we return to Inverness. But we can?t visit Loch Ness without pausing to look for the elusive monster in its waters. After stopping for a search, we continue to the lakeside ruins of Urquhart Castle, once a stronghold of Robert the Bruce, and one of Scotland?'s largest medieval castles. A final scenic drive returns us to Inverness and our journey?'s end.

Please note that this is a typical itinerary, and actual activities may vary due to weather conditions, local events, and to allow serendipity to play a hand in your experience. Accommodations are as outlined in the itinerary, although we reserve the right to change these or the order visited should the need arise.

What To Expect

Physical activity.

Boundless Journeys' trips are designed for energetic and flexible individuals who like to be active and have a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude. Scotland: Highlands & Islands Hiking is rated 3, moderate, on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being the most strenuous). The hikes will be conducted at a leisurely pace, but average 4-7 hours per day on a full day of hiking. They are a mixture of hikes along coastal and loch paths, and through barren mountains and heather fields. Some days are planned as half-day hikes, and these are a bit easier.

The terrain in the Highlands is mountainous and rugged, and there are typically daily ascents and descents of up to 1,500 feet. Scotland has excellent walking paths, but not all trails have level footing. You may encounter roots, rocks, mud, and loose gravel. It is important that you are in generally fit aerobic shape. Our guides will select hikes that they feel will be enjoyable and appropriate for the ability level of the group. There are a wide variety of hikes available in each location, making it easy for our guides to pick the perfect outing each day.

Most Convenient Airport: Inverness, Scotland (airport code INV); or Edinburgh, Scotland (airport code EDI). Inverness is the most convenient as this is where the trip begins. Edinburgh may provide better flight options and will allow for exploration of this fascinating city before or after your trip.

Departure Time and Place: Inverness, Scotland train station; 1:00 p.m.

Scotland's weather conditions can vary greatly, even in the course of a single afternoon. It is not uncommon to have deep blue skies followed by "soft" weather (the local term for a bit of rain). Then the cycle begins again. Therefore, it is essential to be prepared for a variety of conditions -- including dressing in layers and wearing quick-drying clothing. Waterproof hiking boots are not a bad idea either, as you may encounter water or mud along the trails. You can expect the average daytime temperatures to range from the low 60s to mid seventies (Fahrenheit), although it may feel colder on the hikes, especially if it is windy.

You may obtain more detailed weather information by visiting www.weatherbase.com.

High: 60 Low: 49

High: 63 Low: 52

Scotland enjoys a milder climate than you might expect, and spring comes quite early. We feel that spring and summer are ideal times to visit Scotland, as the temperatures are comfortable for walking.

Scottish cuisine has come a long way in the past decades, from a time when fish and chips, haggis, and meat pies where the only items to be found on the menu. Modern Scottish cuisine has grown from these traditional dishes and uses fresh local ingredients (seafood, lamb, and root vegetables) in culinary creations that are sure to delight. Vegetarians can be accommodated with advance notice, though choices tend to be more limited.

Clothing and Footwear:

Make sure you have appropriate clothing and footwear for the trail you plan to hike. Layering is key, as the weather can change quickly. It’s also important to have waterproof gear and sturdy hiking boots.

Equipment:

Make sure you have a basic first aid kit, a map and compass, and a flashlight or headlamp. It’s also a good idea to carry a small backpack with extra food and water, as well as a mobile phone in case of emergency.

Hiking the Outer Hebrides and Isle of Skye

Highlands and islands of scotland.

From $7,195

In Scotland's realm of mist-shrouded crags and heathered moors, we've crafted a hiking trip from the legendary Isle of Skye to the wild seascapes of the Outer Hebrides, a haven of Scottish Gaelic culture on the outer edge of Europe. Our trails bring us to the glistening lochs of Glen Affric, the sandy beaches of Harris, and among the pinnacles of the Quiraing, a geological wonder and an icon of Scotland. Between hikes, we'll be welcomed into the culture as we meet a tweed weaver, listen to a seanchaidh (storyteller), sample fresh scallops, sip fine single-malt whisky, and hear tales of the Campbell and MacDonald clans.

Client Testimonials

"What a wonderful area of the world. It was great to meet so many of the locals and be introduced to weavers, shepherds, and archaeologists."

"A wonderful trip that I would do again."

Half Moon Bay, CA

"Scotland was a destination we had been hoping Wilderness would bring back and you did, but with an even better itinerary! Just spectacular scenery and a wonderful guide."

Kalispell, MT

"This was an excellent trip with a creative, well-planned itinerary that minimized the amount of time in travel, yet covered quite a bit of territory and offered great hiking opportunities throughout. The food and restaurant selections were excellent, with a focus on local cuisine, and the Glencoe House in particular was nothing short of amazing!"

Clarissa M.

"Superb trip, great itinerary, tremendous variety!"

Portola Valley, CA

"A wonderful trip and an excellent and varied way to see all the variations of the beauty of Scotland, from woodlands and lochs to windswept grass dunes and beaches, to majestic mountainous glory...plus the towns, restaurants, and inns gave us the perfect amount of comfort at the end of every exerting day!"

Elizabeth H.

Key Largo, FL

"This was my 5th Wilderness Travel trip and it rates #1! VERY engaging itinerary and the best group leader team I've experienced. I hope that future Wilderness Travel clients can have as satisfying an experience and as much fun as I did."

"An outstanding trip, start to finish. We especially loved the variety of hikes; the terrains were so different and interesting. The other highlight was the constant parade of Scottish figures that we were introduced to. From the storyteller to the weaver to the artist to the accordian player, they were a delight and we learned so much from them; they added a huge cultural dimension. The whole trip was totally up to WT standards, as usual, and Glencoe House was over the top amazing. Thank you!"

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Level 1 – Easiest

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

  • Royal Rajasthan and Villages of India
  • Small ship cruises

Level 2 – Easy to Moderate

Hotel nights and/or safari-style camping, hikes of two to four hours on some days. Other physical activities are sometimes included, such as optional sea kayaking.

  • Tuscany & the Cinque Terre
  • Argentina: Hikes and Estancias of Patagonia
  • Palau Snorkeling & Sea Kayaking
  • Some trips with minimal hiking but rugged travel conditions or long drives, such as  Tribal Ghana, Togo & Benin,  are Trip Level 3.

Level 4 – Moderate to Strenuous

Full-day hikes (4-6 hours), mountainous terrain, significant elevation gains and losses (hiking up or down as much as 3,000 feet) on many days. Altitudes no greater than about 10,000 feet.

  • Ultimate Patagonia

View this post on Instagram Yesterday we finished our hike of West highland way Scotland. – 96 miles/154 km. Path was so beautiful and full of mountains and valleys, ups and downs. We slept in a tent for 7 days. I feel like a winner! The area around Fort William is often considered the outdoor capital of the UK, making it the perfect pivot point for hikers of all levels.

Novice walkers can discover a range of popular beginner’s routes , including gentle hikes to fascinating landmarks including the Old Fort and Inverlochy Castle.

This region is also close to the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK, making it the perfect base for mountain climbers.

Just to the South lies the sprawling volcanic valley of Glencoe, offering dramatic Highland scenery at its very best. Long distance strollers will love ambling along the peaceful Great Glen Way , a quintessentially Scottish 73 mile hike that should be on every wanderer’s bucket list.

Rookie ramblers can stick to easy flat routes found on one of the stunning coastal walks peppered with craggy old castles and plenty of caves, cliffs and sea stacks to explore.

This area is also a prime location for avid bird watchers, being able to boast of some of the most diverse bird life in the UK.

Afterwards, the towns of Wick and Thurso provide great stop-off points for those looking for a cosy bed and breakfast to relax and recuperate between walks.

Those seeking spectacular sea scenes should head to Northwest Sutherland – the best location for panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Pentland Firth. This area is well-known for its remarkable geology and tundra-like landscape, so be sure to pack plenty of warm waterproof clothing.

Enclosed by unusual mountain formations, head down this spectacular region to find a haven of tiny sandy beaches to comb. There are plenty of fairy-tale forests to explore, including Borgie Wood near Bettyhill and Camore Wood near Dornoch.

To the west the ‘bone caves’ near Inchnadamph are an archaeologist’s paradise, where the remains of ice age animals and polar bears have been uncovered…

Follow famous footsteps through the hills and glens

scottish highlands hiking tour

Cinemagoers will know that the unspoilt Highlands have been used to film countless box office smash hits.

Harry Potter fans should visit the Glenfinnan Viaduct , the iconic single track railway that connects the muggle realm to the wizarding world in several of the famous films .

There are a number of easy-going short walks in this area with superb views of the lovely Loch Shiel, a huge freshwater lake in front of a magnificent mountain backdrop.

In the centre of the lake lies the stunning St. Finian’s Isle , the site of an ancient ruined chapel. Braveheart buffs should make their way to the gorgeous Glen Nevis Valley at the foot of Ben Nevis, the setting for much of the award-winning Mel Gibson epic.

Go off piste and take epic Instagram images

The farther away from civilisation you hike the more breathtakingly beautiful the views become, so for those that take pride in the holiday Instagram updates take note; boldly go where few find themselves and you’re in for a real treat.  My recommendations?

Rothiemurchus Forest – encompasses one of the largest areas of natural forest in Britain and boasts an exceptional array of wildlife. Explore the 10,000 hectares of ancient Caledonian forest, lochs, rivers, glens, and mountains with your camera in hand, the views are divine.

The Callanish Stones – are an arrangement of Neolithic standing stones that were the centre of ritual activity in the area during the Bronze Age. Catch a cracker of a sunset and the resulting images are quite extraordinary.

Find freedom along the Mamores Mountain Path

Experienced hikers can also follow in the footsteps of historical Scottish Independence icon William Wallace in the challenging trek along the spectacular Mamores mountain path – not for the faint of heart.

If you want to see some of the endemic wildlife roaming in their natural environment,  you should definitely head to the breath-taking mountain region of Cairngorm, home to one of Scotland’s most celebrated National Parks . Watch out for rare species of wildlife like red deer on well-marked trails surrounded by incredible mountain vistas, rolling hills, voluptuous valleys and crystal clear rivers.

Those seeking glimpses of dolphins, seals, porpoises and waterfowl should take a jaunt to the gentle Easter Ross region, where the coastline is speckled with seaside villages and well-trodden rambling routes.

What to pack when hiking the Scottish Highlands

Depending on the season you visit, your wardrobe will consist of a number of water wicking, water-proof, and breathable layers, however you will need woollen hiking socks and sturdy, supportive footwear whatever time of year you decide to hike.

Are you dreaming of hiking in the Scottish Highlands? Share your comments with us below.

Hi! I am looking to do my first solo backpacking trip and could not ignore Scotland as an option. I would like to go sometime between now and November of 2018. My budget is very very slim, as I’d like to be there for 6-8weeks under 5,000 if possible. Do you have any tips on what I MUST see or how to budget to make it all happen?

I loved hiking the West Highland Way last summer. For a backpacker’s budget, ‘a cheap hotel’ in the UK doesn’t exist. Just a bunk-bed in many hostels through Scotland is £16 to £20. However, in Scotland, it is legal to wild camp just about anywhere you can pitch your tent… even on private property. If you are willing to put up with the rain, and often a damp tent.. Scotland can still be cheap. Regardless of price, Scotland is still one of my favorite places.

Charli, We’re actually planning some time in Scotland this summer. I hope we can see most of the places you mention!

Looking for a backpacking trip in Scotland in this summer to celebrate our 25th anniversary

Thanks for your comment! Without knowing a little more about your travel style and the time of year you’ll be travelling it’s difficult to recommend a particluar itinerary. A great resource to start looking through is VisitScotland.com. They have a tonne of great info and inspirational content that will help you determine what kind of experience you’d prefer to book.

Best of luck with your research.

Wow how beautiful. Thank you for the great guide. We have never travelled to Scotland but would love to one day. I always find myself looking up things about Scotland so I hope sooner than later. All of the hikes look spectacular and will definitely be on our list. We have never tried house sitting either. Will look in to it.

I’m going to be on Isle of Skye at the end of February and really want to get a hike in. I was looking at Bruach na Frithe but it looks like it may be too icy. My husband and I are avid hikers but aren’t used to ice axes. We would love to summit one of the Munros on Isle of Skye (something 7 hours max-we always go quicker than estimated times), but are open to something not so rigorous if there anything highly recommended at that time of year with great views. It’s hard to find much info about the trails online, especially weather conditions (I’m sure because it changes so much!). We’ll also be spending a couple of days around Inverness, a couple in Edinburgh and stopping at Glencoe on our way so any great trails around there are also welcome. Thank you for any advice!

I’m afraid I’m not quite as as avid a hiker as you appear to be so I can’t advise on 7 hour hiking routes. There are couple of links below that might be of help

Sorry I can’t be of more help!

I would love to do a hiking trip in the Scottish Highlands, especially to the Callanish Stones! They remind me of the stones from Outlander. The landscape looks amazing too Jenny | localleo.co.uk

I am preparing to trek from spring 2020.

Can you contact me please I have few questions. [email protected] or on IG @naabbbb . Thank you

Arrive at either Edinburgh or Glasgow airport where you will collect your hire car and drive to your hotel in Glasgow.

Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, has a vibrant cultural life, wonderful Victorian buildings and several great museums such as the Kelvingrove and Transport Museums.

Abode Hotel Exterior

This hotel reflects the city's own modern renaissance, combining striking traditional architecture with the most exciting contemporary design and high-tech facilities. Behind the superb exterior, the 59-bedroom townhouse has been designed with a sense of luxury and relaxation with a home-from-home feel so you can enjoy an ideal night's sleep, and wake up refreshed and rejuvenated.

Situated in-between Glasgow City Centre andthe West End, the Sandman Signature Hotel is the perfect base to explore Glasgow's fabulous shopping, incredible food scene and vibrant events industry. History and culture are more your thing? Mere steps away you'll find Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow Necropolis and Kelvingrove Art Gallert and Museum to name a few.

Within the property itself, this modern 4* hotel boasts 179 stunning bedrooms and suits along with a fitness centre and a stunning onsite bar and restaurant, Chop Grill & Bar.

Doubleroom Grasshoppers Hotel

Right next to Glasgow Central Station, Grasshoppers Hotel offers 30 sleek and stylish bedrooms, with a modern urban look with Scandinavian influences and traditional features.

Leaving Glasgow you are soon immersed in the mountains and lochs of the Western Highlands and will pass Loch Lomond, Glencoe and Ben Nevis on your drive to Dornie (5h). En route you can enjoy a walk in dramatic Glencoe.

Balmacara Mains, Dornie

Balmacara Mains is a family run Guest House located in the Highlands of Scotland, overlooking the Isle of Skye. They provide comfortable accommodation, offering relaxing, contemporary rooms, with stunning views. All rooms are individually decorated and have all the amenities you require for a great overnight stay.

Balmacara Hotel dining room

Welcome to the Balmacara Hotel, where the Isle of Skye beckons from the front windows, the glorious hills of Wester Ross from the back. The Balmacara Hotel is stunningly situated on the shores of Loch Alsh, approx. 3 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh, the Skye Bridge and Eilean Donan Castle. The Hotel enjoys an outstanding location for touring and provides an ideal leisure break destination. Most of the tastefully designed bedrooms have loch side views and the Isle of Skye can be viewed from our coffee lounge and restaurant. A family run hotel, an emphas is placed on high standards of personal service to ensure your stay will be a memorable one.

Dornie Hotel, Dornie

Nestling in the centre of the old fishing village of Dornie in magnificent Wester Ross, the Dornie Hotel occupies one of the most magnificent and scenic locations in the whole of the Highlands of Scotland. A family-run business under the daily care and management of the proprietors Paul & Suzanne Meikle, the Dornie Hotel has a long-established and hard-earned reputation for its warm Highland welcome and friendly, relaxing atmosphere, making the Dornie Hotel the ideal place to stay. The Hotel offers fine food, drink and Paul, Suzanne and the staff are always on hand to ensure that guests have an enjoyable visit.

Although not the highest in Britain the Falls of Glomach are certainly the most dramatic plunging 113m in a single leap. A good path leads you through remote highland glens to the dramatic falls before you return by the same route. You must also make time to visit the romantic Eilean Donan Castle, probably Scotland’s most famous.

The Dornie Hotel has a long-established and hard-earned reputation for its warm Highland welcome and friendly, relaxing atmosphere, making the Dornie Hotel the ideal place to stay.

Leaving the mainland via the Skye Bridge you reach the magical Misty Isle of Skye. An island of mists, myths and legends with the most extraordinary landscape. You have a choice of two walks today. The ruined coastal villages of Suisnish and Boreraig are a reminder of the Clearances, when highland crofters were forcibly evicted. This delightful walk along a remote coast is a reminder of the islands troubled history. Alternatively you can take a boat (not included) from Elgol to Loch Coruisk, right in the heart of the jagged black Cuillins. Loch Coruisk is surely the most dramatic of all Scotand’s freshwater lochs, surrounded on all sides by the jagged dark peaks of the Cuillins. On the return boat journey you should sea birds, eagles, seals and perhaps even otters or whales.

Ruined villages walk : 16.5km, 350m ascent/descent, 5 - 7 hours

Loch Coruisk walk : 7 km, 122m ascent/descent, 3 - 4 hours

Duirinish-GH

This B&B is located only a five-minute walk from the lively town centre, where there are parks, restaurants, pubs, shops and banks. All guest rooms are en-suite and have blackout curtains, complimentary toiletries and wifi.

EriscoBB

Erisco is a most relaxing accommodation on the Isle of Skye, very close to the town centre attractions of Portree. Recently refurbished and renovated, all rooms are en-suite, comfortably furnished and have all the amenities you require for a great overnight stay. Jessie and John will provide you with a very warm Skye welcome at this lovely property.

DSCN6388

The Portree Hotel has recently undergone extensive refurbishment, now offering 24 redesigned en-suite rooms, with all the expected facilities including 32” flat screen TVs, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryers and irons. The new Antlers Bar and Grill and West Highland Bar have also been tastefully refurbished, this includes wood burning stoves, which creates a cosy and comfortable atmosphere.

Stretching north from Portree the Trotternish Peninsula is an atmospheric land of dark brooding cliffs, bizarre rock formations, impossibly green pastures and views that go on forever. Again you can choose one of two walks. Either walk from Portree along the coast (keep your eyes peeled for the resident sea eagles) to the Storr. This needle of rock is one of the most dramatic formations on the Trotternish ridge and affords wonderful views over the island filled sea. Return to Portree by bus. Alternatively drive a little further north to the Quiraing with its wonderfully named features such as the prison, needle and table. A circular walk explores the best of this wonderful area and again rewards with the most wonderful views. Why not take the long way home via Talisker Distillery or Dunvegan Castle, the seat of the Macleods of Skye.

Storr walk: 13km, 510m ascent/descent, 5 hours

Quiraing walk : 10km, 340m ascent/descent, 4 - 5 hours

Leaving Portree you head south to yet another, and completely different part of the Isle of Skye, the green Sleat Peninsula. In Armadale you can enjoy a walk through the beautiful gardens of the ruined Armadale Castle and visit the Clan Donald museum before you catch the ferry (included, 1 hour) to Mallaig on the mainland. From the busy fishing port of Mallaig you follow the Road to the Isles south along the white sandy beaches of the Sound of Arisaig and then east towards Fort William. Your walk today is to the deserted village of Peanmeanach, which sits on a sandy beach on an isolated peninsula. You can see where Bonnie Prince Charlie landed during the Jacobite rebellion and enjoy panoramic views of the blue waters of the Sound of Arisaig. Continuing on to Fort William you can visit the Glenfinnan Monument at the head of Loch Sheil, which was built to mark the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the start of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion.

Myrtle-Bank-GH

Dora welcomes you with open arms to her beautiful guest house - Myrtle Bank. Overlooking Loch Linnie and just a short stroll from the town centre Myrtle Bank is a wonderful place to relax at the end of the West Highland Way.

GuisachanHouse1

A warm welcome awaits you at Guisachan House, a family run private guest house. They are situated in an elevated position off the main road with views over Loch Linnhe and surrounding hills only 5 minutes walking distance from Fort William town centre. They have 17 bedrooms and a guest lounge and bar offering wine, beer, spirits and malt whiskey. Wireless Internet is available for the guests. There is some photography dotted around the guest house taken by Phil, one of the owners.

FassfernGuesthouse

Located in a prime residential area overlooking Loch Linnhe, the guest house is only 5 minutes walk from the shops and restaurants in Fort William town centre. You are assured a warm welcome at this splendid property and all rooms are en-suite with central heating, flat screen televisions and tea/coffee making facilities. There is free WiFi.

Today you will enjoy one of Scotland’s finest walks. Just outside Fort William the steep sided valley walls narrow to a steep gorge which cuts a narrow path to an isolated valley under the towering Ben Nevis. At the head of this green and tranquil glen the white curtains of Steall Falls plunge relentlessly down. This really is one of Scotland’s most precious places. Alternatively you may want to walk to the summit of Ben Nevis, which at 1344m is Scotland’s highest mountain. It is not a challenge to be underestimated but on a good day the views are endless.

Glen Nevis Walk: 13km, 200m ascent/descent, 4-5 hours

Ben Nevis Walk: 16km, 1344 ascent/descent, 7– 9 hours

Your route takes you south past the mountains, lochs and rivers of the highlands to the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage City of Edinburgh. One of the world’s most romantic cities you can look forward to exploring the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and perhaps even the city’s catacombs on a ghost tour.

SixBruntonPlace

Located in the heart of Edinburgh, just a short walk from Waverley Train Station, this beautiful B&B has a variety of room types, access to free wifi and en suite rooms. Each room is thoughtfully decorated and with it's welcoming hosts and delicious breakfast options it's the perfect base from which to explore the city.

Inn on The Mile

A stylish boutique hotel on the most iconic street of Scotland's cosmopolitian capital - The Royal Mile. With just 9 rooms this small city centre hotel is the perfect modern haven from where to explore this historic city. Breakfast in their beautiful high-ceilinged bar is included. By night you can sample their tempting drinks list alongside locally-sourced Scottish cuisine.

A fantastic location towards the west end of Edinburgh's world famous Princes Street which enjoys fabulous views on the very picturesque and historic Edinburgh Castle.

Please note that Skye is exceptionally popular throughout the Summer months. As a result it may be necessary to book upgraded accommodations and/or taxi transfers to accommodate your dates.  Your specialist will inform you of this prior to confirming your booking and advise of any supplement payable.

This trip is best enjoyed between early April and the end of October. You can start on any day of the week. Both the Isle of Skye and Edinburgh are very popular, especially during the summer months (notably during the Edinburgh Tattoo and Fringe Festival), so it is best to book as far in advance as possible.

Scotland enjoys a temperate climate, meaning it's relatively mild all year, except in winter when temperatures occasionally dip below 0 degrees Celsius for short periods. The Highlands are renowned for variable weather so you should be prepared for everything; from 'dreich' days (a Scottish word for drizzly days that are a bit bleak) to days with beautiful blue skies and warmer weather. Whatever the weather it tends to be breezy so spare layers are always recommended.

From the end of April to October average daily temperatures vary from 9-15 degrees Celsius. Monthly rainfall varies from 10-16 mm per month on average. Generally, May to July is the driest and mildest months, but exploring later in the year from September to October is pleasant in cooler temperatures and the autumnal scenery is spectacular as the leaves begin to change colour.

During the shoulder season - March to early April and after mid-October - the Scottish weather tends to be more unpredictable and is often colder and rainier. It is worth keeping in mind that the driving conditions, particularly in the far north of Scotland, will also be more challenging at this time. Landslides can happen as a result of heavy and prolonged rainfall and we continuously monitor trail conditions throughout the season. Attractions and popular viewpoints will generally be quieter at this time of year, which may be preferred.

Glasgow Airport:   Located 8 miles west of the city, the airport is served by numerous domestic and international airlines. A regular   Citylink   bus service operates between the airport and the city centre. Alternatively, you can also book taxis at a fixed rate from the airport to your accommodation in Glasgow, or to Glasgow Central train station in  Glasgow city centre.

Prestwick Airport:   Located 30 miles south of Glasgow,  Prestwick is  primarily served by the budget airline Ryanair. A train service operates from Prestwick to Glasgow city centre, taking approx. 50 mins.

Edinburgh Airport:   Located 45 miles east of Glasgow, Edinburgh Airport is served by numerous domestic and international airlines. A regular   Citylink  bus service  operates between the airport and Glasgow's Buchanan Street Bus Station in the city centre ( approx. 60 mins). Alternatively, you could take the tram towards Edinburgh city centre and connect with the train from Edinburgh Haymarket train station to Glasgow Queen Street station.

If you choose to hire a car you can collect it from the airport on arrival, or we can arrange for it to be delivered to your hotel.

The distances and ascent/ descents are approximations of the recommended routes. Please be prepared by packing all necessary items, for example, proper rain gear (jacket and pants), sun hat, and sunscreen. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard walking gear such as good walking boots or shoes, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, and a day pack.

If you have a preferred sailing time for your ferry journeys, please let us know at the time of booking. Once the ferry journeys are confirmed, we can't guarantee new amendments or changes to the sailing times.

You will need a car for this trip and we would be happy to book a rental car for you if you require this. Otherwise, you can of course bring your own vehicle if travelling within the UK/Europe!

It is a condition of booking with us that you have suitable travel insurance to cover you for cancellation, curtailment, illness or injury.

We are often asked the following questions and I hope that you will find the answers useful.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us or perhaps visit our walking forum for more advice from our clients and team.

As you will be walking on varied terrain and for up to 18km per day a moderate level of fitness is required.

We suggest you book as soon as your plans are finalised as this trip can become popular over the summer months.

You will need good walking boots (ideally waterproof), comfortable walking clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, a daypack and hats/gloves etc. You can download a full equipment list from our website here:

Traditionally April/May has always been the most popular time of year because the theory goes that the weather is better and the midges have not yet appeared. Although having walked in the summer I believe any time between March and October offers a wonderful experience.

Midges are small biting insects (much like north American gnats or blackfly) which are prevalent in the summer months. They are particularly bad on still, overcast days but do not bother you if you are moving, the wind is blowing, sun is shining, it’s raining, or you are inside so as long as you carry repellent for the odd occasion you may need it they shouldn’t have any impact on your experience.
