Union Square San Francisco

Union Square San Francisco is the United States' third-largest shopping area. The city's first mayor probably didn't imagine that would happen when he set Union Square aside as a public plaza in 1849. Neither did folks attending 1860s pro-Union Civil War rallies here. Nevertheless, Union Square became San Francisco's shopping epicenter in the early 1900s and today, upscale stores and hotels surround Union Square, and shopping extends blocks from the central plaza.

Most Union Square shops feature clothing, artworks or items for the home. It's a nice place for browsing and window-shopping, but if you're going to buy anything, be prepared to open your wallet wide because prices are high.

Get Oriented

Stand in the middle of Union Square facing Macy's to get oriented. The Financial District and waterfront are on the left; in front of you (beyond Macy's) are SOMA (south of Market area) and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art . Chinatown and North Beach are behind you, and the theatre/art gallery district lies on the right.

Places of Note Around Union Square

In the Union Square plaza, across from the St. Francis Hotel, is the TIX half-price ticket booth . This outlet helps theatres fill unsold, same-day seats to plays and shows and it's a great way to see one without breaking your budget. For the best selection, get in line about 30 minutes before the half-price tickets go on sale.

At the plaza's opposite end, you'll find Emporio Rulli, a good place for coffee and pastry or an afternoon snack. Sit at an outside table to enjoy people watching.

Facing the plaza, Macy's Union Square , the biggest department store west of New York City, stretches from Powell to Stockton along Geary and spills into several nearby buildings.

The elegant Westin St. Francis Hotel occupies the Powell Street-side of Union Square. Don't just stand there looking at it, walk across the street, go in and take a look at the lobby. When you come out, you can start exploring the streets around the square.

At Christmas, an ice skating rink sets up in the square.

Side Streets Around Union Square Area

Maiden Lane is on the east side of the square on Stockton halfway between Geary and Post. For foot traffic only, it's lined with art galleries and restaurants. The V.C. Morris Gift Shop  at 140 Maiden Lane is San Francisco's only Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building , considered a precursor to his design for New York's Guggenheim Museum. San Francisco City Guides offers free walking tours of the street and recants stories of the "professional" women who once lived in the area.

Geary Street: On the west side of Union Square is the heart of San Francisco's theater district, with the American Conservatory Theatre and Curran Theaters at its center. Also on this street is Hotel Diva (440 Geary), a fun stop to see their "sidewalk of fame" covered with signatures of celebrity guests. At Stockton and Geary, Neiman Marcus forges a link to the past, built around the rotunda and magnificent stained-glass ceiling from the City of Paris, one of San Francisco's most important department stores, which stood on that same corner from 1850 to 1976.

Just a half block down toward the waterfront from Market and Geary is one of San Francisco's most famous hotels, the Palace Hotel . It's worth a quick side trip to see their lovely lobby and Palm Court restaurant - and their Pied Piper bar is a nice place for an evening drink.

Post Street: San Franciscans have indulged themselves at Gump's Department Store since 1861. It's 2 blocks east of Post and Stockton

Market Street: Near Powell Street and Market is San Francisco Shopping Center . Its spiral escalators worth a visit all by themselves.

Panhandlers

San Francisco is making progress in helping homeless people get off the street, but you may encounter them here. If you want to help, experts suggest donating to organizations instead of giving individuals money.

Just the Facts About Union Square

  • Location: Bounded by Geary, Powell, Post & Stockton, center of a larger shopping area
  • How Long: An hour or two to browse, all day for serious shopping
  • Best Time to Visit: When stores are open, busiest on weekends. This area gets especially nicely decked out at Christmas

Getting to Union Square

Signs lead to Union Square from most area freeways. If you're using a GPS, enter 335 Powell Street, which is the address of the St. Francis Hotel.

The convenient parking garage beneath Union Square is no more expensive than other city-run garages downtown. Enter on Geary across from Macy's. If its 985 spaces are full, circle Union Square making right turns until you're on Powell Street. Turn right on Bush Street off Powell, and you'll find the Sutter-Stockton Garage.

Walking from North Beach or Chinatown , take Grant Street south through the Chinatown gate to Maiden Lane and turn right.

San Francisco Muni bus lines 30 and 45 go to Union Square. At the nearby intersection of Powell and Market, you can catch the Powell-Mason and Powell-Hyde cable car lines, BART and the historic trolley car "F" line.

Union Square San Francisco: Top Things to Do in This Popular SF District

Jill on a windy day at the Golden Gate Bridge

by Jill Loeffler   •

Updated: July 9, 2023

Union Square San Francisco is in the heart of the city. This thriving neighborhood is a mix of locals and tourists and offers dozens of fun things to do.

It's a popular place to stay on a trip here as its the district with the largest concentration of hotels with easy access to places all around SF.

Top activities here including shopping, theater productions, galleries, tours, and fun bars and nightlife options. This is also where you will find the cable cars that run between this district and Fisherman's Wharf.

Use my insider's guide to find everything there is to do in this popular SF area.

The hearts you see on the square rotate frequently. It's a fund-raising campaign for a local hospital. When someone buys a new heart, it will spend a week or two before it moves to its permanent home. The one in the picture above is the only full-time heart here.

Shopping in Union Square

One of the top draws to Union Square San Francisco is the shopping. You will find high-end shops all around the square as well as shopping throughout the district. Here are some popular options throughout the district.

Macys in Union Square

Around the Square

The four-block radius around Union Square is home to several high-end retailers. Long standing shops here include Louis Vuitton, Tiffany's, and Macy's.

Along these streets, you will also find Apple, Sak's Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Gucci.

Maiden Lane

Maiden Lane Gates

One of the most famous shopping streets in Union Square San Francisco is Maiden Lane. This high-end street houses retailers such as Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Yves Saint Laurent.

I love this two-block long lane during the day when it's just for pedestrians (11 am to 6 pm).

This is also when the cafes and small restaurants on Maiden Lane set up tables and chairs outdoors for a lovely lunch experience.

Powell Street

Another large concentration of retailers is along Powell Street. Between Geary and Market Street you will find trendy retailers such as Sephora, Urban Outfitters, and UNIQLO.

Other shops on this area of Powell Street include H&M, LUSH, and Express.

Throughout the Neighborhood

Most of Union Square San Francisco is dedicated to high-end brands. Other top shops you will find throughout the district include Burberry (225 Post), Chanel (156 Geary Street), Dior (185 Post Street), and Dolce & Gabbana (100 Grant Avenue).

Westfield San Francisco Center

Just across Market Street from the Union Square District, you will find a large shopping mall called Westfield San Francisco Centre. It's also focused on upscale merchandise and brands.

This is where you will find additional shopping with anchor stores Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom's. You will also find shops such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Banana Republic and Michael Kors.

>> Learn more about shopping around the Union Square District

You will find two of the three cable car lines running through Union Square. Both take you up and over the steep hills of San Francisco to the Fisherman's Wharf District . It's fun to watch them head up and down Powell Street full of riders from around the world.

One of the main attractions in this district is the cable car turnaround. It's fun to watch the cable car operators hand spin the cars around so they can begin their journey back to Fisherman's Wharf.

Cable Car Turnaround in SF

Powell/Mason Cable Car

The Powell/Mason Cable Car runs between Union Square and the eastern end of Fisherman's Wharf. Stops along the way on this cable car include  Chinatown  and  North Beach .

The final stop for this car is at Taylor and Bay Streets. This ride takes about 25 minutes.

Powell/Hyde Cable Car

The Powell/Hyde Cable car also runs between these two popular districts. However, this one heads along a different route. It will take you up Powell Street, through part of Chinatown and up Washington Street.

It then turns down Hyde Street where you will pass Lombard Street before your final descent down a large, steep hill and into Fisherman's Wharf. This one takes a little longer, almost 30 minutes, but it's my favorite of the two.

It climbs and descend on stepper hills and I love the views from this one as you head down that final hill into the Wharf.

Local's Tip : If you don't have time to wait in line, but really want to ride a cable car, then head to one of the other stops along Powell Street. On most cars, they leave space to pick up people along the way.

You won't get the best seats, but you will get to experience a cable car ride without spending an hour or more waiting in line.

Bay Bridge Heart in SF

From Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39 : There are several ways to easily get here from Fisherman's Wharf.

  • Cable Car : Taking a cable car is the most fun. There are two cable car lines that run between Fisherman's Wharf and Union Square. The cost is $8 per person. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes to get there using the cable cars.
  • F Streetcar : Another option is to take the F Streetcar. This option only costs $3 per person. It takes just a little longer - around 30 minutes or so - but is a beautiful ride along the water.

From San Francisco International Airport (SFO): You can take a taxi, shuttle, or BART (the train) from SFO.

  • Taxi : The fastest and easiest way to get from SFO to Union Square is by taxi -- but it's also the most expensive.
  • Shuttle : Taking an airport shuttle from SFO to Union Square is more cost effective. There are about a dozen companies that run shuttles to and from SFO to San Francisco.
  • BART : This takes the most time but is the least expensive. If you pack light and you don't mind walking a little, this is a great option.

From Oakland Airport (OAK)/East Bay : You have the same options for getting into the city from OAK as SFO. However, the experience is slightly different, since you need to plan ahead just a little more. Also, it costs more money and will take a little longer when traveling from OAK to Union Square San Francisco.

Union Square gained its name from the pro-Union rallies held there in the years before the Civil War. The nickname stuck, enduring through the area’s transformation from a residential neighborhood and plaza to a premier shopping district after the earthquake of 1906.

One notable feature of Union Square is the 95-foot granite column, topped by Lady Victory triumphantly brandishing a trident in one hand and a wreath in the other. The monument was built in 1903 to honor Admiral Dewey’s 1898 victory against the Spanish Navy.

The Heart Sculpture in Union Square is one of several in the city and the first of numerous Hearts throughout the Bay Area. Signed and transformed by local artists, the hearts are installed in cities that are known for their acceptance and tolerance. The “Hearts in San Francisco” project benefits the San Francisco General Hospital.

Today, Union Square is an open and welcoming plaza lined with palm trees, sculpted bushes, terraces, and a café. Union Square is most famous for its shopping. With over five hundred retail stores, high-end jewelers, electronics stores, trendy boutiques, and restaurants, Union Square draws tourists from all over the world. Stop by Gucci, Burberry, or Chanel for a taste of name-brand luxury. Enjoy the view of Union Square from the top floor of Macy’s at the Cheesecake Factory, or try Boudin’s Sourdough Café for an authentic San Francisco restaurant.

In addition to visiting Union Square to shop, locals and tourists come to relax, people-watch, and to enjoy the numerous free events held in Union Square. The Union Square Summer Salsa Concert Series is a free annual music concert that occurs every June. Other free or low-cost series include free Tango and Swing lessons, in addition to free rock and blues concerts. Be sure to check at unionsquarelive.org  for event updates.

Ice Skating: Skate beneath beautiful holiday lights at Union Square from November to mid-January of every year! The atmosphere is light, happy, and full of holiday excitement. Skating sessions last for 90 minutes. Rent skates or bring your own. Order tickets online to bypass the long line, or buy at the ticket booth when you arrive.

Union Square in Bloom

The Union Square District has a long and storied tradition of being adorned with flowers. For many years, the presence of flowers, particularly daffodils, was abundant throughout the community. From handing out flowers to visitors walking through Maiden Lane to Macy’s Flower Show dating back to 1964, flowers have traditionally been a significant draw for visitors to our district. Most recently, Flower Bulb Day draws tens of thousands of visitors to gather tulips that decoratively blanket Union Square Park.

It’s easy to dismiss Union Square as a tourist destination, especially given the high density of hotels. But there are food and drink gems worth seeking out in downtown San Francisco. Union Square excels at a mix of casual, inexpensive options and more scene-y places to catch a vibe. Whether you’re looking for a respite from the crowds at the Apple store and Macy’s or want to have an elegant night out, here are 17 standout options around Union Square.

Hed Very Thai

There’s perhaps nowhere else in San Francisco where can a diner order khao gaeng-style Thai dishes , which arrive in so many tiny dishes and bowls. Naruephon “Billie” Wannajaro’s first restaurant outside of Thailand is a lovely place to stop for lunch or dinner to enjoy papaya salad and chicken satay.

Jeanne D’Arc

In the same vein as the reopened Starlite, French restaurant Jeanne D’Arc mounted a comeback after new ownership took over the hotel in which the restaurant is housed. But unlike Starlite, Jeanne D’Arc retained its kooky decor of statues and paintings, and former chef Bernard Moutal is back for the restaurant’s return. Indulge in garlicky escargot and coq au vin during a dinner visit; also, word on the street is diners can request an off-menu souffle a day in advance.

Having slung his top-notch Neapolitan pizzas from a specially rigged, wood-oven-equipped truck for several years, local pizzaiolo Jon Darsky opened this lower Nob Hill spot and now has a Michelin Bib Gourmand listing under his belt. Longtime San Francisco residents will know this place as Harry Denton’s Starlight Room, but in January 2024 the Beacon Grand unveiled a freshly remodeled space with updated cocktail and food menus, now rebranded as Starlite. What hasn’t changed: the gorgeous views of Union Square. Espresso martini fans will want to check out Starlite’s version, which brings a hint of orange flavor with the addition of marmalade; meanwhile, the Cable Car Redux is a sidecar zhuzhed up with five spice and a showy dose of smoke. For food, tuck into hot fried chicken buns served two per order, or a plate of furikake french fries.

Cesario’s is the only spot near Union Square serving old-school, red-sauce Italian, and it’s some of the best you’ll find outside North Beach. Chicken parmesan, lasagna, and penne Bolognese are the specialties, and it’s all served on white tablecloths in a cozy dining room overlooking Mason Street. If Italian comfort food is what you’re craving and you don’t mind the small hike up the hill, it’s a good bet getting a table won’t be a problem.

Ryoko's Japanese Restaurant & Bar

Ryoko’s is way, way outside the ordinary: It’s in a basement and open late-ish, while a DJ (typically a good one) plays loudly to keep the atmosphere lively. When ordering, stick mostly to the basics, though some weird house creations (like the “sexy roll” topped with melted American cheese) are worth a try. Overall, it’s a refreshing departure from the Union Square usual — and pretty much anything else.

Miller & Lux Provisions Cafe

Much has been written about chef Tyler Florence’s new twin outposts in Union Square, and as of November 2023, the sweet and savory locations are open. From the pastry team, there are macarons, chocolate peanut butter muffins, and soft serve-filled croissants. Over on the savory side, get an entire rotisserie chicken with roasted potatoes or a smoked salmon Benedict.

The Rotunda

If you’re going to dine in Union Square, might as well pull out all the stops, right? The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus is all white tablecloths and fine dining, set beneath the store’s iconic stained glass dome with unparalleled views of the square. The traditional move is to catch afternoon tea, though entrees are also offered for a heartier meal.

Bottle Club Pub

Bottle Club Pub is in that squishy area that’s maybe Union Square and maybe Tenderloin, but makes it onto this list for many reasons. Bottle Club’s association with the Future Bars group is an indicator that visitors will get strong, well-crafted cocktails with a showstopper element — in this case, an enormous bottle and decanter collection situated on rotating shelves. Plus the pub has a small but mighty food menu featuring fish and chips, a smash burger, and fried chicken. It’s also kid-friendly if you have little ones in tow.

Jasper's Corner Tap and Kitchen

Since it opened, Jasper’s has been a reliable pre-theater, post-shopping destination with a solid cocktail situation and plenty of hearty, slightly upscale, pub-style dinner options. Think braised beef short ribs over mashed potatoes, wings, and mac and cheese made with Gruyere, fontina, and cheddar cheeses.

SF supervisor says city looking to reimagine Union Square, push to keep Macy's

By pete suratos • published april 18, 2024 • updated on april 19, 2024 at 4:36 am.

The expected closure of the Macy’s in San Francisco is leaving many to wonder, what’s next for Union Square?

Supervisor Aaron Peskin said there are plans in the works to reimagine the area including a push to possibly keep Macy’s around beyond this year.

“We are actually in active discussions with people high-up in the Macy’s organization at the national level and seeing if they will spare San Francisco,” he said.

Peskin is staying optimistic about keeping the doors open at the Macy’s store In Union Square. The retail giant announcing last month that it was closing 150 stores nationwide including the Union Square location.

“We have sent our highest level people, so fingers crossed,” he said.

But the future of Macy’s isn’t impacting the future plans for Union Square, which Peskin said could include converting empty office space to housing, a cable car museum, and even a mainstage for performances as early as this summer.

San Francisco Union Square Macy's facing closure

“We are working on getting money in this coming year's budget to activate Union Square with everything from music to dance, almost everyday,” he said.

During a panel discussion at Manny’s in San Francisco, development experts shared their thoughts on the opportunities for the Macy’s building should the closure go as planned.

“I think that’s one things that is going to be really important is activation and getting different types of uses,” said Kazuko Morgan, executive vice chairman of Cushman and Wakefield.

With uncertainty surrounding the official end date for Macy’s in San Francisco, Peskin said the city will push forward with ideas to reimagine Union Square.

“Part of our mission is to make Union Square more of a neighborhood and when you have more of a 24-hour place, Union Square hasn’t been a 24-hour place,” he said.
