AWFUL! Very similarly to the review below (wish I could contact them!) the bike axle between the two wheels broke, thankfully without my son in (I was about to pick him up), but whilst I was on a residential road. I have now heard of 3 other people in the last month who this has happened to with these bikes. It is dangerous! The box is unattaching from the frame with no prior warning. Absolutely lethal. I have had very frustrating conversations from Vogue, who have refused any responsibility (though the bike is still listed on their website) and have most ignored me. Today i emailed saying someone else's bike had broken. The man told me 'It is absolutely not a dangerous bike, it is a steel frame and needs maitence'. - My bike was serviced regularly (as constantly had flat tyres, as mentioned by the below reviewer) and other issues. - It broke where you can not reach. It's the way it has been welded on. - These bikes will kill someone, and they seem to not be bothered at all. Despite the fact they are created to carry children. PLEASE report so these bikes are not on the streets. Truly terrifying. DO NOT buy these bikes.

I have had a Vogue Cargo bike for about…

I have had a Vogue Cargo bike for about 18 months. In the first year, I had many problems with the tires. I had several flat tires. So then I eventually decided to change them. The mechanic who changed the tires told me that the original tiles are very bad quality. Two months ago, one of the wheel broke. One month ago, the battery died. Today the axle between the two wheels broke while my kids were in the cargo bike, they were very afraid, my daughter was so traumatized that she cried for like 30 minutes. We were lucky that it happened on a bike lane (rather than on the road) and that no one got injured. I would absolute not recommend anyone to buy that bike, in particular for safety issues.

Vogue electric bakfiets motor issues

I have a vogue electric bakfiets under warranty. I moved cities. Now the bike motor is giving issues. When I contact dealers they say , they can't help. They can't even order a motor for me since the waiting time is. 2-3 months. Will not recommend a vogue bike.

I purchased a Vogue Trivelo bike…

I purchased a Vogue Trivelo bike through BOL through their partner Fietsweb. The bike had faults from the day it was delivered. Initially Fietsweb were helpful in sorting out the problems, bit issues still existed with the electric assist constantly switching itself off . I have contacted BOL every day since 13 September who in turn contacted Fietsweb who in turn promised to collect the bike for a refund. This has never happened and the matter has been escalated to BOL head office . All this time I have a faulty bike and no refund. I sincerely thought I had more protection buying a product through BOL and that the partner would do everything in their power to honour the terms of the gaurantee which I may add I had to pay an extra 100 Euro for them to assemble or there would be no gaurantee. Needless to say I'm extremely unhappy with Fietsweb and dissapointed that BOL has still not resolved this matter .

Vogue Carry 3, dangerous front axle

Vogue Carry 3 Overall i do like (especially my dog) my new Bike a lot but one point i don't understand. The front axle is to weak, mine broke after 3500Km. I was lucky, it happened slowly. Imagine 4 kids sitting inside and the axle breaks in the middle of lots of traffic. Please think about it, you possibly harm people or even worse, children. I know, you get what you pay for, but this shouldn't be. Update: 2 months later still no delivery of the spare axle to the bicycle dealer. No chance to get it somewhere else. A Ebike for 3000€ doesn't drive because a spare part for 35€ isn't available. Update 2: after 9 month my Vogue Carry 3 is driving again, parts are available now.

Practical, but unreliable

Lots of problems with it, though Halfords have been good about fixing them. Some of the issues so far (first 5 months/1,000km of ownership): • one front wheel became dangerously loose and wobbly after 1 month • brakes have had to be adjusted (tightened) 3 times • zips broken on the rain cover • motor becomes very sluggish when battery is about 20-30% full When it’s fully charged and working, it’s good. The motor performs well on the gentle hills near our house. The cargo space is a good size for our 2 children (7 & 10) and also for a shopping trip. It’s not reliable enough for us, as we need to do 75km per week. We’ll look for a new bike from a different brand.

De Journey is een elektrische bakfiets met een derailleur met zeven versnellingen. Door de derailleur heeft deze een halfopen kettingkast en moet dus regelmatig schoongemaakt en gesmeerd worden. Vogue heeft de Journey in 2023 geïntroduceerd. De fiets heeft een vaste voorvork en zadelpen. Een schijfrem is zowel voor als achter gebruikt voor het remmen.

Vogue heeft voor een Lithium ion (Li-ion) accu gekozen als energiebron. Deze Li-Ion accu is een veel toegepaste accu die samen met de Lithium Polymeer (LiPo) en Lithium ijzer fosfaat (LiFe) accu in de meeste hedendaagse elektrische fietsen wordt gebruikt. Deze accu is wel wat duurder dan de traditionele Ni-Mh accu maar heeft wel veel voordelen. De levensduur is een stuk langer, de accucapaciteit is groter (bij hetzelfde gewicht) en heeft een zeer lage zelfontlading .

De accu heeft een capaciteit van 468 Wh (36 Volt - 13 Ah). De accu is bij dit model uitneembaar. Dat is vooral heel nuttig in de winter . Daarnaast behoeft dit niet een verlengsnoer.

De elektromotor bevindt zich in het achterwiel. Met de vijf trapondersteuningsstanden, die je kan instellen via een knopje op je stuur, bepaal je hoe licht de fiets rijdt. Je bepaalt daarmee de verhouding tussen de energie die jij in het fietsen moet steken en de hulp die je van de elektromotor krijgt.

Dit model is voorzien van een rotatiesensor . Deze meet hoe snel of langzaam je trapt. Deze informatie wordt door het motormanagement gebruikt om de trapondersteuning van de motor te bepalen. Een rotatiesensor is een eenvoudige maar veelgebruikte methode voor het bepalen van de trapondersteuning. Duurdere elektrische fiets modellen hebben naast een rotatiesensor ook een trapkrachtsensor.

Onder ideale omstandigheden zou volgens Vogue een actieradius van 80 km bereikt kunnen worden Dat is dan wel met de lichtste trapondersteuningsstand. Most brands to come out of India with a global appeal thrive on indigenous craftsmanship and the ideology to contemporise it. The Pearl Academy of Fashion graduate, Laksheeta Govil saw the opportunity in a humble pair of juttis , or “the original ballerina shoe of the world” as she calls it. Her journey to launching her own label was not out of the ordinary. Govil began hand painting her own footwear in college, went on to work with Lecoanet Hemant and learnt the power of detailing in design. It was during her stint with Puma, where working with a global footwear brand gave her the confidence to tread on a design path of her own. Now, with just two years of retail presence in stores, Govil’s instantly recognisable—and not to mention celebrity-favourite—designs are worn all over the country. As Fizzy Goblet opens doors to its third retail store in Bengaluru today, following outposts in Mumbai and Delhi, we get in conversation with the founder about her instrumental collaborations, dressing Bollywood’s top names and growing community of craftspeople under the label.

After the first steps of product development, Govil focused on modernising the jutti silhouette and expanding its utility beyond just traditional wear. “Over time we added Kolhapuris, block heels, sliders, gladiators, loafers and even sneakers— keeping the basic essence of hand embroidery to make designs for different occasions beyond just Indian traditional functions,” she says. One of her favourites is the ‘Macchiato Kolha’, which also won the favour of Kiara Advani . With a tan base, the vibrant bird print and hand embroidered finishes add a unique contrast to the rawness of leather and the delicacy of raw silk with the elegance of pearl work. “Each pair takes a minimum of 60 hours to make and it’s truly art on your feet,” she explains.

From Payal Singhal to Rahul Mishra and Amrapali, some of Fizzy Goblet’s most successful designs come from its collaborations with couture labels. “For me, these associations are very personal and begin by truly loving the work of each of the designers.” Rahul Mishra’s signature 3D floral embroidery, Payal Singhal’s resortwear edge and a collection of customisable ‘charm juttis’ with Tribe by Amrapali have lent to the label’s versatile portfolio. “Each collaboration is strategically placed to bring something new and unique for our customers as well as help us push design boundaries,” Govil adds, revealing that a new holiday line is in works.

“A truly special moment was doing the wedding favours for Sonam Kapoor Ahuja. We had designed an ivory and gold shoe called ‘Aisha’, which was in line with the theme of her wedding and was gifted to her closest guests,” she shares. That’s not all—both Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas wore metallic juttis for their wedding festivities, while most of Kajal Aggarwal’s wedding looks were complete with a pair of embroidered juttis. With Anushka Sharma, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan as loyal patrons of the brand, the label’s visibility has been instrumental in its meteoric success. “But focusing on customer satisfaction and building brand loyalty has been core to us,” says Govil, indicating the brand’s highly engaged Instagram audience of 430,000-plus and core community of online users.

The new Bengaluru retail outlet launches with an ‘artisan corner’ which spotlights the master craftspeople who embroider and craft these one-of-a-kind pieces. A karigar will embroider pieces live, allowing patrons a chance to customise their pieces while witnessing one part of the 60-hour process that goes into making each pair by hand. “The vision was to create a global brand from India by building with communities of artisans and customers. A brand that can truly represent modern India,” shares Govil.

“Juttis are traditionally made in Punjab and typically in each village, each household would be involved in making the shoes,” she points out. “It’s a quintessential family business and typically where three-to-four members would be involved, including women. This is their community where they have learnt from their fathers and their fathers before them. It’s important for us to respect that and not to displace them to the cities. We are proud to do our bit to keep the art alive—we still work with the same karigars and support their growth so much that they have now given employment to over 200 people under them.”

Early in the year as the pandemic struck, the label launched an initiative with NGO Nanhi Kali where every purchase of a limited-edition gift box secured an education opportunity for a girl for an entire year,  along with creating over 200 safety kits. After living a year like this, Govil is hopeful. “When people are once again excited to travel, return to work from the office, go out, celebrate weddings, there will be Fizzy Goblets waiting to be worn for every occasion. The only question is will it be a slider, Kolhapuris, heels, sneaker, loafers or the classic jutti!”

It might be hard to believe, but 2012 marks the 120th birthday of Vogue magazine. When it first started, there were no photographs, just illustrations, and a focus on society women. When Condé Nast took over in 1909, things changed, with photography introduced and fashion becoming the focal point of the weekly. Of course, the publication eventually became a monthly, and riding the social tides and political changes, it has become the magazine we know today. And to commemorate the journey, directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato have put together “ In Vogue: The Editor’s Eye ,” a brief flip through the pages of the magazine’s editorial history, particularly the women whose influence and determination not only allowed the magazine to stay relevant, but maintain its position at the forefront of its many competitors.

Though the documentary fails to delineate the various editorial positions and their responsibilities (at times it seems the magazine has as many editors as corporations have vice-presidents) the common thread between them all is an unwavering dedication to Vogue, and an indefatigable persistence of vision. And they are all mostly linked by a modesty about their achievements, as even the famed Anna Wintour (who got her own documentary with “ The September Issue “) tries to play down her position as merely a buffer between the magazine and the corporate owners. Right. And what it may lack in depth, ‘The Editor’s Eye’ makes up for in history and observation, in particularly underscoring that Vogue isn’t just photographs of beautiful people (okay, it’s that too), but truly a creative endeavor that has captured images and moments in time that have lasted for years and years.

For anyone who has scoffed that Vogue has never done any real reporting, the documentary points right to war correspondent (yes, the magazine had a war correspondent) Lee Miller ‘s haunting photo spread, shortly after WWII, of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Even now, you’d be shocked to find those images in any newspaper, let alone a women’s style magazine, and sixty years ago it was downright groundbreaking. And indeed, this desire to defy expectations went into their fashion shoots as well. Susan Train , a Fashion Editor in the magazine’s Paris branch, recalls that with the introduction of plane travel, the magazine used the opportunity to shoot in such exotic locations as India and Instabul, well before there were even paths made for tourists, or professionals lugging around models and equipment. And perhaps at the height of these kind of involved shoots is Polly Mellen ‘s anecdote about a five week journey with Richard Avedon to Japan for a spread called “The Great Fur Caravan.” And as her first major assignment under famed editor Diane Vreeland (also the subject of recent documentary), it’s a good indication of the trial-by-fire wringer the staff often went through.

But of course, now you’re lucky to get a few days instead of a few weeks to put together a shoot, and as the magazine has grown, the pace has quickened, with creativity often required under the tightest of deadlines. But it’s also a reflection of a lifestyle that has seen everyone become busier, and in the ’90s Vogue realized that their audience wanted a magazine they could relate to, instead of a travelogue to remote places they would never visit, with clothes they’d never wear. Thus the decision to mix haute couture with street fashion, perhaps best exemplified in the November 1988 cover which featured a model in an expensive, baubled (and pretty hideous) Christian Lacroix t-shirt, and *gasp* a pair of regular jeans. The image was so surprising at the time that Wintour relates that the printers actually called the magazine to verify that it wasn’t a mistake.

And it’s this anecdotal approach that Bailey and Fenton use for ‘In Vogue.’ While the duo are best known for the porn documentary “ Inside Deep Throat ,” this is less investigative, and more of an oral history of a kind. Gathering the magazine’s editors present and past including the great Grace Coddington , Tonne Goodman , Camilla Nickerson , Phyllis Posnick and Babs Simpson , along with actresses Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker , fashion designers Tom Ford and Vera Wang and many more, those looking for a comprehensive, balanced look at Vogue will have to search elsewhere. But as a love letter that plays like a living room conversation with some war stories and nostalgia? ‘In Vogue’ does the trick. [B]

Abba: Voyage review – no thank you for the music

After 40 years, the makers of once-sparkling pop are back – but the glamour promised by this album’s two terrific singles goes horribly unfulfilled

T he journey to Voyage, Abba ’s final studio album and their first in 40 years, began with a tweet from their shiny new Twitter account in August, coaxing people to “join us”. Billboards across London followed, featuring images of a sort of solar eclipse, a glitter ball in a sci-fi silhouette. A week later came news of a 10-track album and a “digital avatar” concert residency in a custom-built London arena. The signs were good. Here was a band alive to their legacy as makers of sparkling pop, but also to the spirit of disco’s futurism, understanding that they had to harness the shock of the new.

In September, one of two album taster tracks, Don’t Shut Me Down , fulfilled this brief exquisitely, morphing from vulnerable Swedish noir to piano-and-horn-propelled pop-funk. Its impact was unexpected and exciting and it became Abba’s first Top 10 hit since 1981, charging Voyage with the promise of forward motion and glamour – qualities that felt wildly attractive in our messy, mid-Covid times. And so it is hard to reckon with the disappointment that Abba’s ninth album delivers, as it prefers to languish in often bafflingly retrograde settings.

It begins with I Still Have Faith in You, the other taster track released in September. An epic example of the “bittersweet song” Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog refer to in the lyric – in their different, yet still lovely, older voices – its meditation on how to confront and own the ageing process is precision-tailored, in glistening silver thread. The opening, elegiac string phrase yearns for resolution throughout, before returning wistfully in the song’s final bars. The second verse’s soft drum rolls (by Per Lindvall, veteran of Super Trouper and The Visitors) are among many fine, musical details that urge the women on. It is, admittedly, a little cheesy, but its tenderness still feels triumphant.

But rather than reflecting poignantly on the past, much of the rest of Voyage feels terminally stuck there. When You Danced With Me tells the story of a girl left behind in Kilkenny when a boy she loved “left for the city”. She’s spent years waiting for him to return, we’re told; presumably she’s oblivious to the existence in Ireland of train routes, driving tests or text messages. The Celtic-leaning melody in the intro recalls Abba’s incursions into other global settings, such as the Mexican battlefields in Fernando, or the Spanish-Peruvian musical moodboards of Chiquitita. The overall effect doesn’t prompt folkloric nostalgia, but mild nausea.

Then comes the album’s big crime against sense, sentimentality and sequencing, Little Things, a Christmas song shoved in at track three. All about the delights of the season, it includes a children’s choir singing about their grandma (the St Winifred’s school singers would sound like rebel punks in comparison), but also, in a jolting juxtaposition, intimations about mum and dad’s sex life. Particularly weird is the implication of a grim transactional quality behind a romantic gesture. “You’d consider bringing me a breakfast tray, but there’s a price,” Lyngstad sings, having noticed her partner’s “naughty eyes”. You hope if she’s presented with a breakfast sausage, she’ll impale it then bin it.

Admittedly, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson have never been the most enlightened lyricists on the feminism front. One of Us and Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) are two Abba songs among many featuring a fraught woman desperate for any man to pop along and quick-fix her loneliness. Now four decades have passed, and one can’t help but despair at the chorus of I Can Be That Woman (“You’re not the man you should’ve been / I let you down somehow”) and that’s after its terrible lyrical twist about a female her husband is sleeping with, who turns out to be … a dog. Keep an Eye on Dan offers another miserable monologue from a pining divorcee, spoiling its fantastic mixture of Visitors-era iciness and Voulez-Vous-era disco propulsion.

Ulvaeus recently said these songs were written “absolutely trend-blind”. It shows. Including tracks such as the rejected 1978 single Just a Notion (a reminder of early, jangly Abba glam, but nothing more) and Bumblebee (a naive attempt to say something universal about climate change) makes you doubt their quality control. At least Voyage’s finale, Ode to Freedom, hints at a grand, closing statement, pastiching and stretching a phrase from a waltz in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. But then its lyric talks about the futility of writing an ode that’s worth remembering, which leaves an odd note, especially when we’re talking about a band whose songs are known around the world.

“If I ever write my ode to freedom / It will be in prose that chimes with me,” it concludes. Maybe it’s a reference to the female members’ preference for privacy, or even Abba’s determination to keep creating their unusual song structures in their Swedish reading of English – but it also suggests Abba feel they can exist in their own bubble. They can’t. In the past, they excelled when they twisted the sounds of their times in their own way, when they were within glam, disco and electronic pop but also apart from these genres; when their idiosyncrasies elevated them, rather than diminished them. If only they had stopped at those two knowing songs, leaving the rest to our dazzling imaginations.

For 2020, the Dodge Journey is sent once more unto the breach in an attempt to woo you over with its low price and ... well, not much else. This small seven-seat SUV was once available in a multitude of trim levels and offered a strong optional V6 engine and available all-wheel drive. Now Dodge has stripped the Journey down and simplified it to only two trim levels and one available engine and transmission. It also can only be had in front-wheel drive.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2020 Dodge Journey SE Value 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Briefly ahead of its time, the Journey has been largely forgotten by Dodge and left with a low-budget interior, an underpowered engine and subpar driving dynamics. Even its low starting price isn't enough to make much of a case for the Journey since most of its main competitors can be had for similar money.

In its class, the Kia Sorento leads the way with more space, an abundance of features and an excellent warranty, with the stylish Volkswagen Tiguan coming in second thanks to its safety features and user-friendly tech interface. The recently rehabilitated Mitsubishi Outlander is a more distant third but is still a considerably better option than the Journey.

Performance

All Journeys are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (173 horsepower, 166 lb-ft) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive has been available in the past, but all 2020 Journeys are front-wheel-drive.

Selecting the SE Value trim delivers a bare-bones experience, with manually adjustable cloth seats, 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, and a basic six-speaker audio system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen. Available to the SE Value trim exclusively are the Blacktop Package , which adds black exterior accents and black aluminum wheels, and the SE Value Popular Equipment Group , which includes a power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, satellite radio and three-zone climate control.

The Crossroad upgrades the seating surfaces to leather and brings a power-adjustable driver's seat. It also adds a sunroof and a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and dresses up the exterior with body-colored mirrors and 19-inch alloy wheels. The Crossroad's Popular Equipment Group includes navigation, a more powerful audio system, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Angelina Jolie Shakes Up Fashion with the Launch of Atelier Jolie

Among downtown New York art aficionados, 57 Great Jones Street is something of a sacred site. Andy Warhol bought the two-story building in 1970, famously renting the second floor to his friend Jean-Michel Basquiat a decade later, shortly after they met. And now, with the façade almost completely covered in graffiti, it seems as if every street artist within a 30-mile radius has paid homage. “Perhaps we can do something with all the art,” says Angelina Jolie, peering out from under her enormous umbrella. It’s a drizzly Sunday morning in mid-July, and she’s fresh off the plane from Italy. Six months ago, she and her eldest daughter, Zahara, 18, a student at Spelman College in Atlanta, stumbled upon this place while hunting for downtown retail spaces. The moment they walked through the door, they knew the search was over. “I can be very impulsive, but Zahara is so grounded, decisive, and thoughtful,” Jolie says. “When she agreed, I felt we were both decided.”

In November, the actor, director, and former UN Refugee Agency Goodwill Ambassador and Special Envoy will open the doors on Atelier Jolie, a somewhat broadly defined effort to bring her globally minded, socially conscious values to the world of fashion. She envisions it as a space of collaboration, a kind of cultural center–meets–design workshop that combines tailoring and upcycling services with a gallery space for local artisans and a café run in partnership with refugee organizations. “I’ve met a lot of artisans over the years—very capable, talented people—and I’d like to see them grow,” Jolie says as she gives me a tour of the space before the contractors go to work. Her list of collaborators includes the London-based milliner Justin Smith, the American artist Duke Riley, and South African lacemaker Pierre Fouché—but, she says, “it’s not really about fashion.” Nor is Atelier Jolie about her, she is quick to add. “I don’t want to be a big fashion designer. I want to build a house for other people to become that.” Jolie’s goal is to create community, and in that sense, her project breaks the traditional celebrity mold—one that often amplifies the cult of its founder’s personality. Atelier Jolie’s model is perhaps best compared to the Olsen twins’ The Row, where fame doesn’t overshadow the clothes, or undervalue the commitment.

Our tour begins on the second floor, a light-filled loft furnished with high ceilings, exposed rafters, and benches of reclaimed wood where soon a team of tailors will set up shop with deadstock and artisanal fabrics. Jolie herself is modeling a pair of custom woolen gray trousers, one of multiple styles that will be available made to measure; the cost of a custom slip, say, will start around $300, with repair services that begin at $10 for a hand-painted patch. There will also be take-home mending kits and a stud-it-yourself activity station in the café that patrons can use for free.

Though the property has passed through several hands since Basquiat lived here, traces of the prolific artist remain: the graffiti tag SAMO© (pronounced same -oh)—something he coined with his friend Al Diaz—is scrawled on the concrete floor. This morning, Jolie has her own small crew in tow: the brand’s president and chief operating officer, Helen Aboah, and Giles Duley, who is advising the project on corporate impact but started his career as a music photographer, soon evolving into “an angry man with a camera,” he says, with a focus on the impact of conflict on communities around the world. “Over the last 20 years documenting humanitarian stories, I’ve seen the negative impact of Western consumerism on developing countries—from child labor, illegal extraction of minerals, pollution from the dyeing of fabrics, exploitation of farmers, and much more,” he says. “Atelier Jolie can have an incredible positive impact on artisans who have often been unrecognized and undervalued—but we also have an opportunity to start conversations about workforce exploitation, pollution, and waste.” Adds Aboah: “At the top of Angelina’s manifesto is also the idea that we are all creators.”

There are signs that the team is beginning to make its mark: Draped over the doorway is a blank canvas stenciled with the Atelier Jolie logo in white spray paint. “That was my son practicing,” Jolie says proudly of Pax, 19, who along with Zahara has been heavily involved with Atelier Jolie. As a single mother of six, Jolie considers major endeavors such as this one a project for the entire family, and she turns both expansive and personal on the subject when the conversation turns to her children. “I was 26 when I became a mother,” she tells me. “My entire life changed. Having children saved me—and taught me to be in this world differently. I think, recently, I would’ve gone under in a much darker way had I not wanted to live for them. They’re better than me, because you want your children to be. Of course I’m the mother, and hopefully that safe place for them and that stability. But I’m also the one that they laugh at—and I see them taking over so many different aspects of our family.”

On our way downstairs, she and Duley decide to stage a kind of DIY art experiment: Jolie is swaddled today in one of her signature cream-​colored trench coats—by the sustainable brand Another Tomorrow—but she promptly peels it off in a brightly lit corner of the ground floor studio. “We’re trying to see if we can take photographs of tattoos,” she says, “and turn them into patches—the idea is to make your clothing your own, instead of simply getting rid of it.” She turns her back to Duley’s camera and strips to the waist, revealing her dense lattice of body art. Aboah and I move toward the door, quickly engaging in small talk in an effort to give Jolie privacy. But the movie star in the room seems unfazed.

The tattoos that trace Jolie’s delicate frame include a phrase in Arabic running along her right arm, translating to “strength and hope,” and another in Italian—“still it moves,” a phrase famously attributed to Galileo after his revelatory scientific observations on the solar system landed him in court. “My kids would roll their eyes if they were here,” Jolie says. “I was quite dark when I was young. I was a punk, not the popular kid—going to thrift stores, cutting things up, burning little teeny cigarette holes into things: That was me as a teenager, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Maybe that part of me wants to push back.”

For someone raised on rebellion, Jolie’s mode of dressing tends toward the minimalist and monochromatic, with a distinctly restrained and conservative bent. As a woman who’s been deeply involved with humanitarian causes for decades, she’s clearly worked hard to keep the focus on what she’s doing, not what she’s wearing. She prefers to shop for herself and work with tailors rather than celebrity stylists. “There are more books than clothes in my closet,” she allows. “I’m not someone who likes clothes to consume her life. And I don’t love the idea of being ‘influenced.’ ”

Though she’s loath to admit it, her approach to fashion has been hugely influential. Each style move she makes is fastidiously anatomized by fans on social media, and her seeming reluctance to make a spectacle of herself has only contributed to the current yen for all things quiet luxury (see also Gwyneth Paltrow’s 2023 courtroom style and the character Shiv Roy in Succession ). These days a fashion website that successfully identifies Jolie’s choice of a seemingly unremarkable airport shoe can drive hundreds of thousands of clicks. And it’s precisely that power that Jolie is hoping to harness for good.

“I find it slightly funny that we are involved in fashion—I don’t think any one of us is overly ‘fashionable,’ ” she says, referring to both herself and her children. “But because we live in our clothes, it is so much a part of who we are, and something that’s important to explore, especially for young people.” The atelier is exactly the kind of place she’d like to go to with her kids. “I’ve always wanted to take my family to a place where I can say: Does your clothing really represent you? Absolutely you? And do you love it? I think the average person would not think it does. But I think tailoring does that for you.”

As Jolie tells it, the concept for her new project was born out of a desire to address conversations around self-presentation and identity head-​on. She recalls one such pivotal family discussion surrounding the Los Angeles premiere of her Marvel movie Eternals back in 2021. “I don’t tell the kids how to dress,” she says. “Even when they were little, I just put things in front of them.” The same goes for public appearances: “Nobody has to go anywhere if they don’t want to, and if they don’t want to dress up, they don’t have to.” On this particular occasion, five of her kids did—enthusiastically—dress up. And so Jolie decided to make their red carpet appearance an experiment in circular fashion, gathering pieces from her closet and letting her children choose. In the pile: a beige box-pleated Gabriela Hearst dress that Shiloh, then 15 and known for her smart suiting and boyish haircuts, opted to wear youthfully tailored to the knee. Zahara, meanwhile, selected a dazzling beaded Elie Saab dress from her mother’s storage, first seen at the Oscars in 2014. “I went vintage shopping with a few of them as well—I think Knox was wearing all vintage. The cut was quite unusual, quite cool, I thought,” says Jolie of her youngest son, then 13. “I want them to be their own people.”

Later that morning, Jolie decides to pay Gabriela Hearst a visit and invites me to tag along. The pair have collaborated on a capsule collection with Chloé, consisting of evening­wear directly inspired by Jolie’s quietly sophisticated sensibilities, and Jolie is eager to tell me more about it. For Hearst, whose three-year tenure as creative director at Chloé ends this season, the project is somewhat of a last hurrah. “I didn’t realize just how few B Corp fashion companies there are out there aside from Chloé,” she says with a sigh as we ride over to Hearst’s studio in Chelsea. (B Corp certification is awarded to companies that meet high standards of social and environmental impact.) “Gaby’s worked really hard,” Jolie adds. “It’s no small feat.” She’s not wrong: Thanks to Hearst, the French house became, in 2021, the first luxury fashion brand to earn B Corp status. Having seen the effects of climate displacement firsthand, Jolie takes that achievement seriously. She parted with the UNHCR last December, and is clearly looking to explore new, more immediate ways to make a meaningful contribution. “I’ve spent over 20 years of my life working on foreign policy, and aid relief, and displacement, and laws pertaining to refugees, and I kept watching the same situation get worse and the same cycles continue,” she explains. “Now I want to shift the focus and look at how we can work in partnership with people around the world to bring not just skills training, but actual business partnership. I don’t really believe the current system is working.” Hearst sees potential in the partnership too. “I admire people who use their spotlight to illuminate those who need it,” says Hearst, who was introduced to Jolie via a mutual friend a couple of years back. “And she’s the epitome of that.”

In person, the pair have the easy rapport of old friends. They settle into Hearst’s cozy office with cups of green tea, and their conversation turns playful. “Remember when we had that hilarious Zoom call?” says Jolie. “We were both half naked, trying clothes on for each other.” Jolie takes out her phone to find the evidence. “I had wine,” says Hearst with a grin. “Looks like a lot of weird freeze-frames here,” Jolie says, scrolling through her saved photos. “No, wait—I think it’s this one!” On her screen: a woozy shot of a half-dressed Hearst. The designer blushes, and the two erupt in fits of laughter.

Jolie produces another image on her phone, this one a childhood photo of her with her mother, the actor Marcheline Bertrand, who died in 2007 at the age of 56 after an eight-year battle with ovarian and breast cancer. Jolie the toddler is dressed in a tiny black velvet cape and an adorable hand-​crocheted white smock. “That was my very first cape,” she says, fondly. “My mother was a hippie—she called herself that, she was very proud. She didn’t shop a lot. She loved her velvets and her suedes. She never wore makeup, nor did she really do her hair. She wasn’t a flashy person—she was elegant, natural.”

This sweet mother-daughter portrait was a jumping-off point for the Chloé collaboration, one that sparked a larger conversation between the two women. “Angelina and I are basically the same age,” Hearst says, “and then I learned that her late mom would have been the same age as my mom now.” A black-and-white photograph of Hearst’s mother—a Buddhist, tae kwon do master, and fifth-generation Uruguayan cattlewoman—is propped up on the desk behind her. “So I started researching Angelina’s mom: her beauty, her strength, and her grace.”

The capsule includes a dramatic floor-length velvet cape, and an adult-size version of Jolie’s baby crochet smock handmade by the craftspeople at La Fabrique Nomade, an organization in Paris that works with refugees. Jolie’s trademark silk slip dress emerges through a broad range of nude shades—the suggestion of Zahara, who has struggled to find the right match for her dark brown skin tone. “Obviously, as a white woman, I’ve never had this experience,” Jolie says, candidly. “It never crossed my mind until we went shopping together and I saw that there’s so much room for improvement.” (A full 84 percent of the collection is made using sustainable and ethical materials.)

There’s plenty of tailoring to be found here too—a nip-waisted black coat cut from organic silk gazar is a standout—though overall, the look is gently rounded, not rigorous, all soft shoulders and curvilinear shapes. “Sometimes the way you dress says, ‘Don’t mess with me—I’ve got my armor on,’ ” says Jolie. “But I want a woman to feel safe enough that she can be soft. After I went through something where I was hurt, I had a therapist ask if I would try wearing a flowing garment. Sounds silly, but I assumed that pants and boots projected a ‘tougher’ look, a stronger me. But was I strong enough to be soft? At the time, no. I felt vulnerable. Now I wonder if I don’t know what my style is because I’m still understanding who I am at 48. I guess I’m in transition as a person.” She pauses to gather her thoughts. “I feel a bit down these days. I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way, which I don’t want to get into." She adds that she started doing less film work “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots. We had a lot of healing to do. We’re still finding our footing.” Atelier Jolie is part of this process, it seems. “I think part of this has also been therapeutic for me—to work in a creative space with people you trust and to rediscover yourself,” she says. “I’m hoping to change many aspects of my life. And this is the forward-facing one.”

Around lunchtime, Jolie gets a call from her driver: It seems she is running late for a rendezvous with Pax—they’re on the hunt for New York apartments. (Jolie has just signed on to produce The Outsiders on Broadway.) Jolie turns to hug Hearst goodbye. “I’m not really somebody that has girlfriends, so this has been an interesting jump for me,” she says. Hearst returns the embrace and sends Jolie off with her favorite single-origin fair trade bar from Dick Taylor Craft Chocolate.

The next morning, at a photo studio in Brooklyn with Annie Leibovitz, glimpses of Jolie’s free-spirited and rebellious side come into view. The atelier founder has decided that a pristine white knife-pleated dress she’s had custom made for the shoot is far too plain. What it lacks, she insists, is a personal touch, maybe some graffiti. She grabs a bottle of hot pink spray paint in each hand and gets to work.
