Test : Le Trek Rail 7 est très amusant avec un cadre de très haute qualité et bien équilibré. Intégration intelligente de la batterie, excellente géométrie, entraînement convaincant - les Américains ont vraiment tout fait correctement à cet égard. L'équipement est également largement convaincant, même s'il limite quelque peu le grand potentiel du cadre.

La position assise du Trek Rail 7 a été définitivement conçue pour un conducteur sportif. Le cadre est assez long, l'avant pas trop haut pour pouvoir exercer une pression suffisante sur la roue avant. Cependant, les dimensions ne sont nulle part si extrêmes que même les débutants ne trouveraient pas leur chemin autour de l'E-MTB visuellement saisissant. Le châssis trouve un équilibre tout aussi bon. Au niveau de son caractère de base, on le qualifierait de sportif et tendu, mais il ne néglige pas pour autant le confort en terrain modéré.

Performances globales rondes hors route

Avec un débattement de ressort de 150 mm ou 160 mm et une maniabilité sportive, le Rail s'épanouit littéralement sur les sentiers. Grâce au centre de gravité bas et à la position centrale sur le vélo, vous pouvez profiter d'une expérience de conduite complète qui transmet un niveau de sécurité extrêmement élevé. En plus de la grande douceur de roulement, le vélo vous invite également à explorer les limites. Les caractéristiques de conduite positives sont largement conservées même à des vitesses élevées et un style de conduite difficile, même si le RockShox Yari RC commence alors à transpirer un peu à l'avant. L'amorti relativement simple est un peu dépassé par les coups rapides et a tendance à se durcir.

Géométrie TrekRail 7

Les freins à 4 pistons à prix raisonnable de Shimano fonctionnent étonnamment bien. La raison en est peut-être aussi les grands disques de frein de haute qualité, avec lesquels vous n'avez aucune difficulté à immobiliser le rail, qui pèse un peu plus de 23 kg, même dans les descentes plus longues. Autre point positif : même avec de gros grondements, le vélo reste silencieux et ne vibre que très peu. Pour les terrains escarpés, nous aurions seulement souhaité une tige de selle télescopique avec plus de débattement. En plus du fonctionnement du Tranz-X, à notre avis, un débattement de 130 mm dans les tailles L et XL n'est pas suffisant pour un vélo avec un si grand potentiel de trail.

Grimpeur solide avec la puissance Bosch

Le Trek E-MTB offre des performances tout aussi convaincantes en montée. Cette forte performance en montée est bien sûr due, entre autres, à l'impressionnant moteur Bosch CX. Le dynamisme des Souabes apporte un équilibre presque parfait entre puissance d'accompagnement, sensibilité et naturel. Il y a de légères déductions pour le bruit de fond plutôt désagréable avec des performances de support élevées.

Cependant, la conduite seule ne fait pas d'un E-MTB un bon grimpeur. Heureusement, le rail a également la bonne géométrie pour cela. Vous n'êtes pas assis trop lourd à l'arrière et à partir de cette position centrale, vous pouvez gravir confortablement de nombreuses ascensions en position assise. Le vélo atteint ses limites lorsqu'il devient très technique et très raide. Un angle de tube de selle encore plus raide pourrait être utile ici. Cependant, ce n'est rien de plus que la mouche dans la pommade très citée et peut difficilement obscurcir l'impression de réussite autrement globale.

2020 TREK RAIL 7 REVIEW

Last year we rode the Trek Rail 9.8 and we were really impressed. It was such a capable bike on the rough descents, and so nimble and fun on the flowy trails. But a carbon bike with great equipment comes at a cost. Yeah, I’m talking about the price. So, we were excited to ride the cheaper Trek Rail 7 this time. Is it as good as the more expensive bike?

The Rail 7 is an alloy bike that costs €5.499. It is the only model in the line-up running the 12-speed Shimano drivetrain, shifter is SLX and derailleur is XT. It shifts very well, even under load. But it needs to be finely tuned to be smooth, and I adjust the wire tension surprisingly often. Brakes are the dual calliper Shimano MT520, which I really like. Even though they’re not top of the line, they have a nice feel to them, and they’re pretty powerful.

The tyres aren’t my favourite though, not for what I ride. The Bontrager XR5 Team Issue 29×2.6” is a proper mountain bike tyre, but it is on the lighter side. I prefer a heavier tyre with taller knobs and softer rubber compound when my trails aren’t dry. We swapped the front tyre for a Maxxis Minion EXO+ and left the rear tyre on, that worked perfectly fine for us. I was going to complain that the dropper post is only 130mm on sizes medium and up. But I have to say there was never a situation where we felt the seat didn’t go low enough. 120mm can be too little, but that extra 10mm offered precious space so I decided not to complain.

I can accept most kinds of battery integration as I usually keep the bikes indoors. But the Rail has been parked outside on several occasions, and I’ve come to appreciate the ease of installing and removing the 625 watthours Bosch battery. Getting the battery out is just as easy as on bikes with external batteries. This is a nice detail that will matter to some of us.

Oh, and did you notice this little hole in the battery lid? It’s a port for accessing the physical power button of the battery. If the display won’t power up the bike, sticking an allen key or such into this hole may power up the bike. Depending on what’s wrong of course.

Different geometry

The geometry of the Rail 7 is the same as for the 9.8. We rode with the Mino link chip set to low pretty much all the time. This means a slack 64.5* head angle, 448mm chainstays and a pretty low 339mm bottom bracket. This is a bit different from most of the other 150 to 160mm travel 29er emtbs on the market. The rear end is noticeably shorter, the bottom bracket is lower, and the head angle is slacker. And this is what we like about the Rail. If we flip the chip to high, the head angle steepens and the bottom bracket height increases. This makes the Rail more similar to the other Bosch powered 29ers on the market. It is a pleasant bike in the High setting, ground clearance is decent and it climbs effortlessly.

Even though climbing suffers a tad in the Low setting, we still find it’s a great climber. The 448mm chainstay length is long enough to help us keep the front wheel planted in the really steep ups. The Bosch Performance CX motor is powerful and easy to control in most situations. Check out our review of the motor for more info.

There is a bit of chatter coming from the motor though. The bike is mostly nice and silent, but when coasting down hill, the motor makes some noise. Check out this video to get an impression of the noise from the Bosch motor .

When going slow and navigating the bike over tight obstacles, we felt the weight of the alloy bike. As most other Rail models, this bike has got the big 625 watthours battery and it is about 24 kilos out of the box. We set it up tubelessly and did a few other minor changes and got it down to 23,7 kilos with pedals. And that isn’t bad really, bikes in this category can easily weigh 25 kilos.

The Rail 7 never quite had that same level of nimbleness as the more expensive and lightweight Rail 9.8. Still, it was a seriously fun bike on the flowy trails. With a bit of technique, most bikes can flow down a flow trail. But the Rail did it with such ease. We were sending it of ledges and bouncing off obstacles, and the bike felt so well balanced. We were going with the flow, never having to make corrections.

The slightly downhill oriented geometry along with the suspension makes the Rail 7 a great performer. The 160mm travel Rockshox Yari always was a sensible fork. But now, for 2020, performance seems improved. We rode rough, rocky sections – high speed chatter – drops and jumps, and it felt surprisingly smooth. We were never really missing a line choice due to poor suspension performance, we always felt in control. Sure, the Rockshox Deluxe Select+ shock without the piggyback chamber might not be up for the rough prolonged descents. But we were happy with it during the test. It has good pop when playing around and it tracks well.

Recently I’ve ridden lots of bikes with the cheaper Rockshox 35 Gold RL fork. This is a popular fork for entry level bikes. Around here, the Rail 7 isn’t much more expensive than some of those bikes, and the suspension performance on the Rail 7 is way better. Even though both Fox and Rockshox have several models in the suspension line-up that performs better than the Yari and Deluxe Select+, we found this really is surprisingly good.

The Trek Rail 7 is a really good bike. Sure, it doesn’t offer the exact same riding experience as the more expensive Rail 9.8, but it isn’t lacking much. Being slightly heavier means it can feel a tad slower to maneuver in some situations. Still, I want to end this review the same way I did when we tested the 9.8, by saying, the Rail 7 offers an impressive blend of playfulness and stability at speed.

Le top en cadre Alu

Points forts, points faibles.

Trek est mon 3ème VTTAE en 4 ans,

En dehors du plaisir de changer de vélo, les évolutions en électriques sont nombreuses et je pense aujourd’hui le garder quelques temps car il réunit franchement un compromis au top pour moi....

Effectivement, le nouveau moteur Bosch est très agréable (vive l’EMTB), et merci les nouvelle manivelle plus courte donc elles tapent beaucoup moins....,

L’autonomie est aujourd’hui suffisante avec la batterie en 625, les sorties tournent autour de 50km Max et c’est agréable D’avoir encore une barre de secours ....

La géométrie et les poids équilibrés, le vélo saute à plat.....

Les roues en 29 ! Le bonheur.... elles avalent les racines, troués, bosses.....une révélation !

Un tarif maîtrisé car même à ce tarif, de nombreux concurrents n’offrent pas la polyvalence du Rail 7.

Pour finir, c’est également un choix fait car c’est une marque que suit mon magasin ...et là c’est le dernier conseil que je souhaite transmettre, un VTTAE doit être suivi de prêt et entretenu, voir mis à jour et là ne vous amusez pas à devoir faire 50km .....

Test nouveauté | Trek Rail : changement de cap

Avec la sortie du nouveau moteur Bosch en début d’année, les marques renouvellent les unes après les autres leurs VTTAE pour rester au goût du jour. Pour 2020, Trek a même poussé la réflexion plus loin puisque la marque américaine présente un tout nouveau vélo en 150 mm de débattement, le Rail. 150 mm, comme le Powerfly LT ? Oui… mais sur le papier seulement.

C’est Bosch qui est en charge de la partie assistance, avec un moteur Performance Line CX et une batterie 500 ou 625 Wh suivant les modèles. La commande est une Kiox ou une Purion suivant le niveau de gamme.

Par ailleurs, la protection est fixée à la batterie, ce qui fait toujours une pièce de moins à stocker lorsque la batterie est démontée. Ce démontage se fait d’ailleurs sans autre outil que la clé de déverrouillage, fournie avec le vélo. Pour faciliter le transport, une petite poignée bien pratique est intégrée à une extrémité de l’ensemble batterie + protection.

De plus en plus de marques développent leurs propres solutions pour sécuriser et cacher au maximum le capteur de vitesse sur la roue arrière et Trek n’est pas en reste. La solution proposée par la marque américaine est d’ailleurs particulièrement réussie, avec un capteur semi-intégré dans la base et un aimant qui prend la forme d’une entretoise entre deux vis du disque.

A l’avant, on retrouve du Rock Shox (35, Yari ou Lyrik) en 160 mm sur tous les modèles. Le té est une version spéciale e-bike, surdimensionné pour plus de rigidité.

Enfin, on retrouve quelques petits détails techniques communs à la plupart des vélos Trek comme le jeu de direction Knock Block ou le levier de l’axe de roue arrière qui fait office de clé BTR 5 mm.

Le Trek Rail 9.8 sur le terrain

Nous avons découvert le Trek Rail en Italie sur les sentiers du parc régional des Collines Euganéennes, 50 km à l’ouest de Venise. Malgré un peu de pluie la veille, le terrain est très dur, très sec et plutôt fuyant.

Comme d’habitude chez Trek, la finition est excellente. La peinture noir mat / rouge brillant est du plus bel effet et semble plutôt solide. Malgré le terrain très rocailleux, notre vélo de test était toujours comme neuf après notre sortie de test.

Avec le même débattement que le Powerfly LT qu’il remplace, on pouvait s’attendre à ce que le Rail soit simplement une mise à jour d’un vélo déjà réussi. En montant dessus, on s’aperçoit que la réalité est toute autre et que si Trek a choisi de changer de nom, c’est bien parce que ce Rail n’a rien à voir avec le Powerfly LT. Tout en restant facile à prendre en main, le Rail offre un caractère plus tranché et moins passe-partout que son prédécesseur. Pas forcément idéal sur les sentiers lents et techniques où son poids se fait sentir, il apparaît bien plus à l’aise sur des sentiers plus lisses et joueurs où le dynamisme de sa suspension fait merveille.

Vtt électrique tout suspendu trek rail 7 génération 2 2023.

Le nouveau vélo tout terrain Trek Rail 7 2023 est un modèle mis au point pour se mesurer aux trails qui se respectent. Il possède la  motorisation Bosch Performance Cx 85 Nm et une batterie d'une capacité de 625Wh.

Le système de batterie intégrée amovible de Trek affiche un look remarquable et est on ne peut plus convivial : il dissimule complètement la batterie dans le cadre afin de la protéger, il permet de déposer aisément la batterie sans outillage et laisse de l’espace pour la fixation d’un porte-bidon.  

Une transmission monoplateau 12 vitesses Shimano SLX/XT, une tige de selle télescopique, des freins Sram Db8 à 4 pistons et des roues Bontrager Line Comp 30 de 29 pouces équipent ce vélo.

Le vélo est doté d’un port de charge externe pour simplifier la charge, que vous laissiez la batterie sur le vélo ou que vous la déposiez.

Un avis pour une première approche… Design magnifique, un budget certes non négligeable, mais très bon rapport qualité/prix pour un VTT à assistance électrique tout suspendu et réunissant le haut de gamme (ou presque) de l'équipement et accessoires.

I like my mountain plus bike.The only problem i have, the third speed jump when i put some pressure . Its not an adjustement, everything is fine. The problem is with the freewheel .I did 70 kilometer with the bike and it attenuate the problem a little.

Bike assembled easy and ride good.

We purchased the NCM Moscow 29 E bike from Leon Cycles earlier this month. Communication was via 'Whatsapp' which I initially thought a little odd but worked out well. Once communication established the transaction was completed quickly and easily. We were able to arrange for the team to assemble the bike for us and we picked it up from the warehouse without an issue. We love the bike and are continuing to find new places to discover using it. Competitive price and great service.

Been riding the trails both road and mountain for a few months. Great power and no issues with components

I ordered the bike 4 days ago and today it arrived. Now my first impressions: it is easy to assemble, looks great, is cleanly finished and after a first short driving test I have to say, the hammer. It's totally easy to drive. If it stays that way, I can only say thank you Leon Cycle. Now I can cycle again, despite knee problems. Price-performance top

We purchased the NCM Moscow 29 E bike from Leon Cycles earlier this month. Communication was via 'Whatsapp' which I initially thought a little odd but worked out well. Once communication established the transaction was completed quickly and easily. We were able to arrange for the team to assemble the bike for us and we picked it up from the warehouse without an issue. We love the bike and are continuing to find new places to discover using it. Competitive price and great service.

I ordered the bike 4 days ago and today it arrived. Now my first impressions: it is easy to assemble, looks great, is cleanly finished and after a first short driving test I have to say, the hammer. It's totally easy to drive. If it stays that way, I can only say thank you Leon Cycle. Now I can cycle again, despite knee problems. Price-performance top

Great bike, this is my second e bike and by far the best. Watching e bikes over the last 10 years I think the Moscow 29er is fantastic. I live in the Dandenongs outside Melbourne with big steep hills and the Moscow takes them all on with great pulling power and gear range. 48v with 16 amps means over 750 watts of power. The bike is big and serious so getting on and off can be tricky but you do get used to it. With the previous bike (36v at 8amps) I was scared of running out of battery on a big hill and having to push the bike home but not with the Moscow. Also if you take the front wheel off you can get it in a hatchback like my Mazda 3 Which is nice. At $2200 it is a great buy.

Purchased two Moscow 27.5. One for my wife, one for me. Fast delivery, well boxed and easy assembly. Absolutely FANTASTIC to ride and use. Great range, and enough power for steep hills and tough terrain. I highly recommend them. Exactly as advertised and brochure. Looked at many options from other suppliers but these are the best value for money. If anyone wants a little extra range and a few more features then a Moscow Plus may suit. 48 Volt is the way to go. Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

• Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
• You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
• There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
• Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
• If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
• You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
• You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
