Walmart adds 3d virtual shopping tour for online home shopping.

Tom Ryan

Walmart is testing a “3D Virtual Shopping Tour” feature on its website that allows shoppers to see what furniture looks like in a staged home.

Shoppers can navigate through a curated apartment showcasing nearly 70 items from both national brands and Walmart’s private label offerings. Wrote Anthony Soohoo, SVP and group general manager, home, U.S. e-commerce, in a blog post, “As they virtually explore the apartment, customers simply click on different products in each room to get more information.”

Shoppers can use Google Cardboard or Samsung Gear VR as well to enhance the experience.

Walmart also introduced a “Buy the Room” feature that enables shoppers to easily purchase home items that tend to be purchased together.

The two new features follow upgrades to Walmart’s online home buying experience in February that support discovery, including the addition of curated collections, shop-by-style options and editorial-style imagery and design tips.

In February, Walmart’s technology incubator, Store No 8, acquired virtual reality startup Spatialand to build VR products for the retailer’s stores and websites.

“While we are launching these new features for dorm rooms and small space living,” said Mr. Soohoo of 3D Virtual Shopping Tour and Buy The Room, “we know that they could have applications elsewhere and will continue to listen to customer feedback to determine how to implement them more broadly on the site.”

Ashley Furniture, IKEA, WayFair, Amazon and Target have all tapped either augmented or virtual reality to support the purchase of furniture and décor items for the home over the last year.

In most cases, shoppers view furniture in their actual homes by “placing” them there using their smartphone. Rolled out last October, Target’s augmented reality feature, “See It In Your Space,” promises to let shoppers “place three-dimensional versions of real Target home products within photos of actual rooms at home, and move them around at proper scale to see how they’d look — all before buying the product.”

This summer, select Macy’s stores are introducing a VR tool that enables customers to visualize how a piece of furniture would look inside a room of the same dimensions as one in their home.

Discussion Questions

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: What do you think of the appeal of Walmart’s 3D Virtual Shopping Tour? Does it advance other ways retailers are using AR and VR to support furniture purchases? What other categories seem best positioned to benefit from 3D-type technologies?

Chris Petersen, PhD.

VR might not be quite ready for widespread adoption by consumers, especially if some kind of headset is required for viewing. In order to sell home furnishings and “big stuff” online, retailers will need to engage customers and create some sort of interactive platform. IKEA and Lowe’s have already demonstrated the power of customers visualizing space, colors and placing items in their home.

If retailers wait until this kind of technology is mainstream, they won’t even be in the race. Kudos again for Walmart taking a leadership role instead of playing catch up to Amazon and the online furniture sellers.

Neil Saunders

This is a good move but, as the article states, it’s no longer unique. That said, the fact that Walmart curates the room sets is different — though this could prove to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it allows Walmart to display a range of products in a coordinated setting. On the other hand, it means Walmart has to take care to design a fairly neutral room environment which appeals to its diverse mass market — a challenge more targeted brands like Williams-Sonoma don’t have.

Sterling Hawkins

It’s not unique and it still is another step in the right direction for Walmart. They’ve jumped on the innovation train and are continually trying out new technologies to see what works and what does not. There’s a tremendous opportunity in virtual shopping like this as consumers acclimate to AR and VR. And with this test, Walmart will already have some technical and cultural know-how to support it.

Paula Rosenblum

Way back in the day (like 20 years ago), I was the CIO of a home furnishings retailer, Domain Home Fashions. These types of apps (not the AR/VR, but 3-D shopping) were around then, and I really wanted to buy them for the stores. The commissioned sales people shot me down because they felt it would slow them down too much. Crate and Barrel pulled the trigger back then, and left the computers sitting in full view of customers. No one ever used them, and I actually asked sales associates about them.

So perhaps there has been a generational shift that makes people say “oh yeah, I’d like to do that.” I know it would be useful for me. I tend to make Powerpoint layouts of rooms I’m trying to design (I really do, I have done it multiple times) so I would likely be a user of this kind of app, but I liked it 20 years ago too. I’ve done kitchens, bathrooms and the replacement of furniture in my living room, including a big screen TV, just to help me get a sense of scale.

I suspect it’s going to end up very niche — though I don’t understand why everyone wouldn’t use it!

Max Goldberg

Retailers are using VR to help consumers imagine how furniture will look in various spaces, but it doesn’t go far enough. The next step is to enable consumers to upload images of their rooms/homes so they can visualize furniture in their actual surroundings. That’s when VR will take off in use and acceptance.

Bob Amster

In addition to furniture, white goods are a very good candidate for VR technology in retail. Apps to position artwork in rooms and along walls are good candidates as well. The product categories prone to the most costly mistakes are likely to be the best candidates for AR and VR.

Lyle Bunn (Ph.D. Hon)

VR and augmented reality are fun and highly engaging. Room decor seems a natural fit but so far the awards for VR application are going to bigger ticket items such as automotive and recreational vehicles. Polaris was recently recognized for its use of VR in enhancing the recreational vehicle purchase experience. Walmart’s use of VR for staff training has very high business value but moving from the training room to customer experience (with its inherent staffing requirement) looks to be a bit of a leap.

Mohamed Amer

For a company that invented mass everything, it’s refreshing to see Walmart make these probes into new areas. That is a sign of true business leadership.

I view Walmart’s 3-D Virtual Shopping Tour as one of several efforts the company is taking to attract a younger, more affluent shopper. This is important to generate more growth for the company and over the long term it will give the brand much wider appeal.

Jeff Sward

” … invented mass everything … ” — good point. Their willingness to help pioneer this is great news for everybody. Lots of businesses will have the opportunity to learn from Walmart’s lessons.

Peter Charness

Good move. I think in viewing Walmart innovation it’s key to contemplate the Walmart.com that it wants to be, not the legacy Walmart brick-and-mortar.

Doug Garnett

Perhaps I’m not a typical enough shopper. But this seems far more like a gimmick than an innovation.

The key question: Do shoppers learn anything significant through this method about the product they might buy? I can’t imagine that they do.

Furniture fabric cannot be fully replicated in 3-D — there is no way to virtually replace the truth of what fabric feels like in person. My own home can’t be replicated in 3-D — only represented in a partial way.

Will shoppers learn enough to make a difference in the purchase? I seriously doubt it. That said, the world of tech is desperate to turn VR into something because it’s not selling that well in general — reasonably but not dramatically.

Ken Morris

3-D virtual shopping tours and AR/VR are perfect solutions to help consumers make more confident purchases for any home goods. Walmart’s 3-D virtual shopping tour is a great way to make shopping fun and suggest complementary products that consumers may not have thought about.

Consumers can’t bring their homes to the store, but if they can virtually bring the products to their homes they can see how they fit in their home decor. Beyond furniture, any home products are a good fit for these technologies.

Shopping is changing very fast!

Camille P. Schuster, PhD.

People who already have VR viewers are likely to try Walmart’s new idea of shopping for furniture. However, they are likely to find that it falls short because it is only possible to place furniture in Walmart’s created room. Other places allow consumers to “try” by placing furniture in their own rooms which is more helpful. Consumers who do not have VR viewers are not likely to want to get involved to see how furniture looks in a room that is not their own.

Rich Kizer

I salute Walmart and all others who are making new paths to purchase, especially into VR. This is going to turn into a “clone,” not close, race. What I mean by that is that every month companies will find new aspects to the use of VR; the ability for customers to pick an item, then shrink it, expand it, turn it 360 degrees and even change its color in their own home.

Those retailers that wait to jump into the world of VR-assisted selling will find it a steep road to go up and catch those retail pioneers who are blazing that trail. Like the old saying; “If you want to predict your future, you must invent it.” And since inventing is based on necessity, retailers must see this as a platform with legs.

Cate Trotter

I don’t really see the huge benefit for this over what is already out there — Target’s AR system seems like a more useful application of tech as you can actually see what the products look like in your home. Walmart’s curated apartments might be lovely, but how much will that translate to the average customer looking for furniture. How will they know if that will work for them at home? I think until we’re able to offer customers a VR experience that uses their own rooms to view products in the AR application seems a better way to go.

Ricardo Belmar

It’s great to see Walmart experimenting to find ways to leverage innovative new technology like VR in ways they can attach mass appeal to it. While it may not work for all shoppers — I suspect many will find the idea of only looking at Walmart’s curate room to limiting and will wish they could upload images of their own room — they will no doubt learn quite a bit about how this technology can impact conversions and basket size. Macy’s has found that the VR use int heir furniture department can mean the difference between shopper buying a single piece vs an entire room full of furniture!

Personally, I see a lot of potential for these types of apps in product categories where the product is big, expensive, and prone to buyers remorse. Categories like furniture and home furnishings fit well, as would art, and anything else requiring a decision made on fitting a space to be a good fit. However, I see greater adoption of AR via the shopper’s mobile device because nothing could be better for most shoppers than seeing the items in your own environment vs a curated room in a VR headset!

Jennifer McDermott

This seems more like a promotional tactic than conversion tool but I think it’s really interesting! I think it would work well teamed with an activation to promote a home makeover show.

Walmart.com Launches 3-D Virtual Shopping Tour

Browse, discover, get inspired.

Walmart.com has launched a 3-D virtual shopping tour and Buy the Room feature for the home category to give consumers a more elevated and inspiring shopping experience.

While the technology is being leveraged for home products only, Anthony Soohoo, senior vice president and group general manager, home, U.S. e-commerce, said, “While we’re launching these new features for dorm rooms and small-space living, we know that they could have applications elsewhere and will continue to listen to customer feedback to determine how to implement them more broadly on the site.”

A test of the 3-D virtual shopping tour that started today allows customers to virtually view a curated apartment showcasing almost 70 items, including national brands and Walmart private labels. As consumers explore the apartment, they can click on products of interest in each room to get more information.

The other new feature, Buy the Room, will bow in July, giving shoppers a new way to buy an entire look quickly and easily.

“We know that many customers shop for their dorm rooms or apartments in the summer months, and we also know that many of them tend to buy certain items together,” Soohoo said. “For the first time, we’re making it possible to add a group of items to a cart to buy a complete look. Initially, we’ll have five curated collections, with each room featuring up to 20 of the most sought-after items college students search for and purchase. As someone who is obsessed with good design, I would have loved to have such a stylish living space when I was in school.”

The technology comes after Walmart.com relaunched in February the home area of the web site. The reimagined fashion portion of the site bowed in May, featuring sophisticated graphics and photography that showcases “real-life moments,” an  expanded color palette and fonts that added vibrancy and depth to the site. Like the home upgrades, it’s all meant to create a more upscale environment resembling a specialty store experience as the Bentonville, Ark.-based retailer moves beyond low-priced apparel .

Walmart.com, like other retailers, sees Amazon’s moves in the fashion space. Last week, Amazon announced a new fashion platform, Prime Wardrobe, which is similar to other wardrobe subscription services such as Trunk Club and includes brands other than Amazon’s private labels, for example Adidas, Calvin Klein, Levi’s and Hugo Boss.

Delivery is seen as a critical issue as the two retail giants battle one another. At Walmart’s annual shareholders meeting last month, Marc Lore, president and chief executive officer of Walmart U.S. e-commerce, said, “We’ve started to roll out same-day delivery from brick-and-mortar stores. So, 100,000 products are now available for same-day delivery at some stores. Our goal is to get all the first-party sku’s to stores so we’re able to reach customers in one or two days.”

Besides the new same-day competency from Walmart store, Lore said, “We’re currently extending the number of sku’s that we offer for free two-day delivery every day. We continue to aggressively bring more sku’s to the warehouses. All the first party product is in our warehouses, so we can get two-day delivery via ground in a single box. We also think there’s a big opportunity to leverage the 4,700 stores to do same-day delivery.”

That’s something Amazon won’t be able to do any time soon. However, the Seattle-based online and digital behemoth on Thursday said it’s launching a new initiative to help individuals with little or no logistics experience build their own delivery companies. Amazon will offer technology and operational support and take an active role in helping interested parties set up delivery businesses. Successful owners could earn as much as $300,000 a year in profit operating a fleet of as many as 40 vehicles. Amazon is committing  $1 million towards funding startup costs for military veterans, offering $10,000 reimbursements to qualified candidates.

Also looking for new ways to deliver orders to consumers more quickly and less expensively, Walmart offered  associates the option of earning extra money for delivering packages to clients along their routes home after work.

“Since launching the new home experience back in February, we’ve been hearing great feedback from customers commenting on our stylish home decor at affordable prices,” Soohoo said. That means the new editorial imagery and the way we’ve curated the assortment is working. With the addition of the 3-D virtual shopping tour and Buy the Room, browsing and shopping for your home will be even easier.”

Walmart 3D Virtual Tour brings interactive shopping to retailer's website

walmart 3d virtual shopping tour

Walmart is adding a 3D virtual shopping tool to its website, enabling users to engage with potential purchases in an interactive way. The tool can be used directly within an Internet browser, though it also supports generic / cardboard VR headsets so users can look around as if they're standing in the 3D space. Many items within the tours are clickable with additional information.

Walmart announced the new shopping "experience" today, saying this is a test presently that presents curated spaces — such as apartments — loaded with Walmart items. These include things like Mainstays mirrors and textiles, furniture, decorative elements, and more. That is joined by a second experience called "Buy the Room."

The 3D Virtual Shopping Tour is available starting today, presenting those aforementioned curated spaces that showcase various Walmart goods. Users can tour the spaces, clicking on items that catch their eye to learn more about them. Both the company's private label and national brands are included in these virtual spaces.

The second feature, Buy the Room, won't be launching until next month. When it does, customers can buy a complete look for their own homes, such as the entire kit for a curated bedroom. The company will launch a total of five curated collections to start with, each of them featuring up to 20 items.

Buyers who like what they see can order the entire room — that is, all the items shown in the images — to save time that would otherwise be spent buying individual items. The company is focusing on small living spaces and dorm rooms, at least to start with. Though you'll have to wait for those, the virtual room tours are available now via this link .

Walmart added a 3D virtual shopping tour to its website Wednesday, giving customers the chance to explore a nonexistent apartment filled with products they can buy.

The tour showcases about 70 items from various brands and Walmart's own offerings. Customers can click their way around the one-bedroom apartment and click on products to buy them from the site.

The items for sale seem focused on furniture and other basic home furnishings -- a Microsoft Xbox One and Samsung fridge are visible, but not currently clickable.

The company will go to the next level in July, when it adds a Buy the Room feature that will allow customers to add multiple items to their cart and purchase a whole curated look.

Walmart may also be be looking to streamline its online shopping experience with checkout-free retail, as it reportedly discussed collaborating with Microsoft on the tech earlier this month.

It also launched a $50-per-month personal shopper service , Jetblack, in May and massively expanded its online grocery service in March.

Walmart Launches 3D Virtual Shopping Tour and “Buy the Room”

walmart 3d virtual shopping tour

Walmart is testing a new experience that enables customers to take a virtual shopping tour of a curated apartment showcasing nearly 70 items from both national brands and private labels.

Shoppers touring the apartment can click on different products in each room to get more information, the company said.

Walmart is also launching “Buy the Room” where customers can buy an entire look. Customers can add a group of items to their cart to buy the complete look. It will begin with five curated collections with each room featuring up to 20 of the most popular items customers search for and purchase on Walmart.com.

This feature is targeted at college students for designing dorm rooms and those in small living spaces.

MCM Musings: A growing number of retailers that sell furniture are realizing customers want to see how the pieces will look in a home setting. As a shopper myself I understand this struggle. Often, it’s too large or too small or just doesn’t work with the room. Wayfair in particular has been ahead of the curve in offering a virtual experience and others are following suit. VR technology is enhancing the shopping experience, decreasing returns and giving retailers a chance to upsell and recommend other products. It’s a win-win for customer and seller.

Walmart Launches 3D Virtual Shopping Tour; Buy The Room Coming Shortly

Walmart

Four months after launching its new digital shopping experience  for the home on Walmart.com , the company announced it launched two new ways for customers to browse the website, including a 3D virtual shopping tour.

In a company blog post , Anthony Soohoo, SVP and group general manager for Home, U.S. eCommerce, wrote that Walmart is testing a new experience in which customers can take a virtual tour of an apartment that has close to seventy items from national brands and its private labels. As customers explore the apartment, they can click on different products to get more information.

The other feature, dubbed “Buy the Room,” will be launched in July and is a new way for customers to purchase an entire look quickly and with little effort, wrote Soohoo. “We know that many customers shop for their dorm rooms or apartments in the summer months, and we also know that many of them tend to buy certain items together,” wrote the executive. “For the first time, we’re making it possible to add a group of items to cart to buy a complete look.” In the beginning, Walmart will have five curated collections with each room featuring up to 20 items college students search for and purchase. Soohoo noted that Walmart is seeing how these applications can be used elsewhere and will continue to listen to feedback from customers to determine how to roll it out more broadly on Walmart.com.

“Since launching the new home experience back in February, we’ve been hearing great feedback from customers commenting on our stylish home décor at affordable prices. That’s music to my ears because it means that the new Shop by Style options, editorial imagery and the way we’ve curated the assortment is working. With the addition of the 3D Virtual Shopping Tour and Buy the Room, browsing and shopping for your home will be even easier,” wrote Soohoo.

Walmart Rolls Out 3D Virtual Online Shopping

walmart 3d virtual shopping tour

BENTONVILLE, United States — Walmart Inc said late Wednesday it is introducing a 3D virtual shopping tour on its website that would help customers browse and choose items for their homes.

The new feature would enable customers to take a virtual shopping tour of a curated apartment showcasing about 70 items from national brands, besides Walmart's private label offerings.

Starting from July, the company said it would allow customers to add a group of items to a cart that will provide a complete look for their apartments and homes.

The announcement comes at a time when retailers are seeking technological advancements to enhance in-store and online customer experience.

Walmart Launches 3D Virtual Shopping Tours

The idea is, walmart creates curated rooms full of products you can buy and then lets you move around them online picking out what you like and ordering it. you can also just 'buy the room' and throw everything in your cart..

Matthew Humphries

Walmart isn't afraid to experiment and try new things when it comes to enticing more consumers to shop there. At the beginning of June we got shopping by text , now we're getting a 3D virtual shopping tour .

Walmart is giving shoppers the opportunity to "buy the room" from the comfort of their homes. Rather than your typical internet shopping experience, Walmart is embedding 3D tours in the web browser. For example, one of them is a curated apartment with around 70 items you can choose to buy. It looks like a typical apartment setting, but it's setup to entice you to make a purchase (or several).

Walmart 3D shopping tour

Control of the scene is handled by keyboard or mouse input, or taps and swipes on touchscreen devices. You can travel around the room, stopping to look at, zoom in on, or tap the associated Mattertag to buy individual items. Clicking to buy throws you out of the 3D environment and loads the product in a new tab showing the standard Walmart product page.

Walmart's thinking here is, we shop to furnish a room and we tend to buy things together to fill that room. By presenting us with an actual room to browse, we will buy more as the experience reminds us what goes together and what products we need to buy. And if you like the look of the room, Walmart will allow you to buy "a complete look" by enabling a group of products to be added to your cart.

If the initial selection of 3D room tours proves popular, Walmart is prepared to implement more of them based on feedback. For now, expect it to be limited to dorm rooms and small space living as that's apparently what we tend to shop for most during the summer months.

Walmart Launches 3D Virtual Tour Experience For Shoppers

Walmart

Retail giant Walmart has added several new features, including a 3D virtual shopping tour, to its online store, the company announced Wednesday. The addition looks to make things easier for customers buying home furnishings.

The 3D Virtual Shopping Tour on Walmart.com allows customers to take a 3D virtual tour of an apartment stocked with a range of home decor to get a glimpse of how items would look if displayed in a real space. It also allows online shoppers to toggle through the items, price them out, and make a purchase.

The virtual tour features almost 70 items including select brands and Walmart’s own labels. Some items, such as Samsung fridge and a Microsoft Xbox One gaming system, are displayed but don’t appear clickable, according to CNET .

In July, the company will take things a step further by adding another tool called "Buy the Roo," which will allow shoppers to buy entire themes for their rooms, with five selections including themes called "decked out dorm'' and "boho.'' These curated "looks" were designed to help college students buy an entire look for their space with ease.

"While we are launching these new features for dorm rooms and small space living, we know that they could have applications elsewhere and will continue to listen to customer feedback to determine how to implement them more broadly on the site," Anthony Soohoo, SVP and Group General Manager of Walmart's U.S. e-commerce home division, wrote in a blog post.

"We also continue to build our assortment of great merchandise for all home shoppers, including a new coastal style that is popular with our customers in the summer months," he added.

Meanwhile, the total spending for school and college combined reached more than $83 billion, a more than 10 percent increase from 2016, according to CNBC, citing a report by The National Retail Federation, which surveyed over 7,000 consumers. It found that college families were preparing to shell out about $5.9 billion apartment and dorm room furnishings.

Walmart rolls out 3D virtual online shopping

(Reuters) - Walmart Inc said late Wednesday it is introducing a 3D virtual shopping tour on its website that would help customers browse and choose items for their homes.

The new feature would enable customers to take a virtual shopping tour of a curated apartment showcasing about 70 items from national brands, besides Walmart's private label offerings.

Starting from July, the company said it would allow customers to add a group of items to a cart that will provide a complete look for their apartments and homes. http://bit.ly/2Mw61RQ

The announcement comes at a time when retailers are seeking technological advancements to enhance in-store and online customer experience.

The U.S. retail giant is pouring billions of dollars into beefing up its e-commerce business and recently announced partnerships with logistics companies to deliver groceries ordered online.

Walmart's technology incubator, Store No 8, bought virtual reality startup Spatialand in February to build VR products for the retailer's stores and websites.
