I was lucky enough to be able to take my 12 yr. old daughter Sophie to the Boomer Ranch for a buck hunt. It was a 10.5 hour drive from north Mississippi to Lampasas but let me tell you it was worth the drive. The accommodations, deer, and most important the hospitality shown to us was second to none! We arrived on a Friday at 1pm, and Mr. Paul was waiting for us at the gate to take us to the awesome 3 bedroom house we would be staying in for our hunt. We were in the stand by 4pm that afternoon and had deer in the field by 4:15pm. The bucks we saw during that hunt had me and my daughter in awe! The patience and instruction given to Sophie by Paul as she was trying to make a shot on one of the targeted bucks was impressive. By 5pm she had taken a beautiful 130 class 10 point! The biggest buck of her young hunting life! She can’t wait to get it on the wall in her room! Paul went out of his way to make sure she had every opportunity to be successful! The memories and friendships made that weekend will last a lifetime! The Boomer Ranch is a family oriented hunting facility that I would be proud to take my daughter back to again. Mr. Paul, thank you so much for going the extra mile to make us feel welcomed! We look forward to spending time with you at the Boomer Ranch in the future. 10/29/21 Thanks Richard and Sophie-Amory Ms.
This was truly the best experience as far as having the complete success with the hunt of my life, as I was able to harvest my biggest trophy buck of my life. This was my second trip to the Boomer Ranch and it ended with the same result as my first, as I was successful in harvesting a beautiful trophy turkey within only 20 minutes. The accommodations, lodging and atmosphere is out of this world and truly indescribable. Paul and Richard made my dreams come true with the harvest of my very best Trophy buck…a main frame 12 point with 21 total points and two drop tines, double and triple brow tines and crab claws. This buck has everything that I could have possibly wanted a buck to have, having all of those characteristics, making this all the more special. I assure you when you arrive at the Boomer Ranch, you will not leave there disappointed. I will be returning in the future. If someone is looking for a hunt of a lifetime or just the perfect getaway with the best atmosphere, the Boomer Ranch is the place to be for sure. Until next time, I am looking forward to another exciting hunt/trip with this awesome Outfitter at the Boomer Ranch. Mike B. Bonnette,Alexandria, La.
Big Thanks to Paul at the Boomer Ranch for a fantastic hunting experience. I took the biggest buck of my life, a 200 lb. main frame 12. The genetics at the Ranch are outstanding. Paul has done it right. He scouts and has trail cameras which helps when you are limited to a weekend hunt. The camp is very nice. Two large bedrooms with several beds and a full kitchen. The property is beautiful and full of game, deer and turkey. His stands are big and comfortable. Paul and Richard(aka ZZ Top) are some fun guys to hunt with and hang out with after the kill. I think we even transformed Paul into an LSU Tiger fan? If you are looking for some BIG deer and some great people give Paul a call. I will definitely go back. Chad Edwards,Deville, La.
I was recently invited by a friend to join him at The Boomer Ranch on a guided turkey hunt. As this was my first turkey hunt and my first time at the Ranch, I really had no expectations but had some assumptions based on previous experiences hunting quail and pheasant at other ranches in Texas. Upon pulling up to the ranch, it was easy to tell that The Boomer Ranch was a first class operation. The property leading up to and around the cabin is well maintained, the bunkhouse was clean and comfortable and the full kitchen had all the necessities for cooking both the quick lunch or the elaborate dinner. Going out on our first hunt, I had the opportunity to see all the extensive work that has been put into this ranch to insure a quality hunt, be that turkey in the spring or deer in the fall. The stands were all well maintained and the blinds were well built and meticulously camouflaged with natural materials from the ranch. Beyond the obvious work put into the ranch, it is clear Paul(Owner/Operator) does his homework before taking hunters out on the grounds. He studies the wildlife to gain an understanding of their patterns and where the best location might be to hunt at the time. In addition to the work that Paul puts into every hunt, he has also partnered with some great hunting guides. Our turkey guide was as professional as he was skillful. I can’t say if this is any kind of record, but with Paul’s research of turkeys most recent patterns and our Guide’s exceptional skill at calling, we were on a group of two toms and a few hens almost immediately after reaching our blind. We harvested our first turkey within the first 10 minutes, A 20 lb. tom with a 10 1/2+” beard. A mere 40 minutes later, after retiring to a deer stand to avoid some spring flash storms, our Guide called in a second group of birds with two 19+ lb. toms. Within 5 minutes of calling the group we harvested our second turkey of the night…a 19.8 lb. tom with a 10′ beard, a very successful hunt all within an hour of leaving the cabin. Saturday morning’s hunt may not have broken the 10 min record(record for us at least) but it was every bit as successful as our Friday hunt, with the third member of our party harvesting a nice 19.3 lb. tom. We were lucky enough that the winds from the cold front that moved in the night before calmed down as the temperature remained in the mid to high 30’s(a nice cold front for April). This provided the perfect environment to utilize the fire pit while swapping stories over a roaring fire. During the entire weekend, Paul was a very attentive and gracious host, tending to whatever needs we may have had. In all, if one is looking for the next place to take their trophy deer or turkey, The Boomer Ranch should be a top consideration. Russell Lovelace,Spring Tx.
What an unbelievable experience Paul(Owner and Guide) and The Boomer Ranch have given to me and my son. Thank You! To anyone considering going to The Boomer Ranch, trust me, the hospitality, the accommodations, and the hunting is some of the best I have experienced. The weather was terrible on the drive in and we were about three hours later than we expected. We arrived there almost at midnight and Paul was at the gate waiting for us. The next morning the weather was less than ideal but Paul never gave up! This man has one goal, and that is to get you what you came there to get. After many hours of hunting, my thirteen year old son harvested his first turkey. It was one of the best guided hunting experiences that I have been on. We have left The Boomer Ranch with a great memory and a new friend in Paul. Thank you Paul for the unbelievable trip to Texas. Grahan Gault, Monroe, La.
Hunted The Boomer Ranch the weekend of 12-2, 3, 4 2016. Really enjoyed myself. Seen plenty of deer of all sizes. If a person is looking for a place to get away, relax, and shoot a deer of your choice, this is THE place to go. Will go back in 2017. Thanks. John Dowd, Streetman, Tx.
I’d like to take this opportunity to say “howdy” to all who read this letter, and then send my praise to Paul Madura and his operations at the Boomer Ranch. First, a quick introduction of my family; my wife and I are Blessed to have two wonderful sons, both were in college (away from home) during this past hunting season. We raised our sons hunting, fishing and enjoying outdoors, but when they went to college the deer lease payments gave way to tuition, books, and other college related expenses. We value family time and love being together every chance we can, and we still love the thrill of watching and harvesting deer. I contacted Paul and set up a late season doe and spike hunt for my wife, sons and myself. After meeting Paul, no question, he is one of the most gracious men I have ever met – and my entire family agrees! The Boomer Ranch accommodations are wonderful too. The fire ring in the center of the lawn was perfect for “solving world problems” while my family enjoyed time together and caught up on the past school semester. I can’t adequately express the great time we had talking to our sons, while watching stars that we never see while living in San Antonio. We invited Paul to join us and together we had great conversation, and for once I didn’t over cook the steaks and chicken we brought for BBQ. The deer stands and hunting arrangements were perfect, each blind had ample clear lanes and shots around 100 yards, or longer – all depending on your shooting skill. The harvest was secondary to the time together and the experience. Everything about this entire trip was outstanding, Paul’s company, the house, the game we took, the deer cleaning and storage facilities, the family getting together, and the bucks. OMG does Paul have some super white tailed bucks! I hunted south Texas, near Batesville, Tx for 11 years, Paul’s trophy’s are as gorgeous as those we saw (alive and harvested) in south Texas. Whether you are after the trophy of a lifetime, or want to spend quality time with your friends and family – or both – the Boomer Ranch and Paul Madura, are a win-win for everyone. Thank you Paul for a wonderful time, can’t wait to see and hunt with you again. Perry, Barbara, Austin and Chase Nelson, Helotis,Tx.
Thank you Boomer Ranch for a very relaxing, but Heart Beating time. The atmosphere and land are beautiful. The cabin is very nice and spotless. The front porch view of the oat patch at dusk and dawn is breathtaking. The fire pit and chairs were ready when we showed up. The driveway and roads stayed in good shape even though it rained the whole time. I had a wonderful relaxing time. My Guide put me on the biggest and heaviest deer that I EVER SHOT. I own my own company and this year I needed to go somewhere to take a break and enjoy myself. This hunt was so good that I booked another hunt for next year and would advise anybody else to experience this fabulous Boomer Ranch. Billy Ray Dozier, East Texas
I recently grabbed the opportunity for an early hunt on the Boomer Ranch in Lampasas, Texas. I was only interested in taking a doe home at this point mainly for the meat. I am not an avid deer hunter but looked forward to the experience as I have had an opportunity to know the ranch owner, Paul, for many years and have spent some great moments on the Ranch in previous visits. The Boomer Ranch has great accommodations for overnight stay offering a pure relaxing experience. The ranch is incredibly clean and organized and just makes the trip worthwhile. On my recent hunt with Paul, I experienced seeing a great herd of deer including healthy doe and large bucks. On all of my previous visits, I have encountered seeing large flocks of turkey. I have not been turkey hunting yet, but plan on doing this in the spring. Paul is a great host and Guide and will ensure you enjoy every minute. Whether you are an avid deer hunter or less experienced like me, I guarantee you will not be disappointed in this excellent Central Texas adventure. Mike Willis, San Antonio, Tx.
The number of Rio Grande Turkeys at the Boomer Ranch is just stupid. The night before the hunt I sat with Paul outside the Ranch House. We watched turkey after turkey work their way toward the roosting area. A very conservative guess would be 30 plus birds. As Paul watches his birds on a regular basis he has their patterns down. He set me up at a bottle neck the next morning, where I waited in the dark, listening to gobble after gobble from the roosting area some two hundred yards away. At day break they poured into the meadow. Three Toms with hens and four more Toms scattered around them trying to call the girls away. It did not take a lot of effort to bring one of the Toms to my decoys. My Tom had a thin 9 inch beard and was probably the smallest beard of the surviving 6 Toms. By noon my hunt was over with the Tom and a Jake. If someone is looking to check a Rio off their list I would give Paul a call.   Joe Krzykwa, Sun City Center, Florida
The Boomer Ranch is an Outdoorsman’s paradise. The pictures you see on the website don’t do justice to the property and the exceptional game management. In late October 2016, I spent two days on the ranch and viewed numerous once-in-a-lifetime trophy bucks and mature turkeys. Most memorable was sitting in a comfortable blind and witnessing a 19-pointer and 17-pointer do battle. The noise of antlers crashing together and the resulting dust from the field was phenomenal as these two BIG BOYS fought for dominance. And they were not alone, as they were in the company of many other high-quality bucks. Some lucky hunters are going to be very happy harvesting from the Boomer Ranch herd. The ranch itself is spectacular with more than adequate lodging, 5 well-placed blinds, a beautiful stream through the middle, and just an overall picturesque get away from it all feel. And it’s not 10 minutes outside Lampasas should you want to go into town, but…you won’t want to leave once here.   Mike Forsyth, San Antonio, Tx.
I have been hunting for 40+ years, I have been to dozens and dozens of game ranches over the years. Paul and Richard have a beautiful ranch and great operation at the Boomer Ranch. The Whitetail buck quality is stunning, the accommodations are quite comfortable (nice and clean) and my overall experience was top notch. I will be going back to the Boomer. It can be a tricky thing, to pick out a game ranch, but give Paul a call, email and talk to him, you’ll be glad you did. The Boomer Ranch was everything they said it would be. Thanks Richard, Thanks Paul. We’ll see you in the future. T.G.B.
We had the pleasure of going on a guided turkey hunt w Paul in May of 2017. Paul had been scouting before our trip and set up a perfect, natural blind along the side of a hill inside a cedar and mesquite tree that had grown together.  It was the perfect cover and proved to be the perfect hunting spot. We saw numerous hens and deer before Paul called up our first mature gobbler that was within 15 yards. It took about another 45 minutes before Paul had called up another great set of gobblers and we were both able to get the great turkeys we had been hoping to see. Even though we both got our birds on our first hunt Paul continued to be a great host and took us out the next morning to watch deer and more turkey. He took the time to drive us around the Ranch and show us all the beautiful scenery. The accommodations were spacious, comfortable and very clean. The Ranch house has plenty of room for numerous hunters and the kitchen had everything needed to prepare our meals. The front porch is super spacious and has a gas grill and smoker that were all in great shape and helped us cook our meals. Great fire pit in front for relaxing at night and enjoying the stars. Overall it was a great trip and we would both highly recommend The Boomer Ranch for anyone interested in a great hunt.   Jared Johnston and Michael Glade
My first trip Boomer Ranch was in April 2016 for a Spring Turkey hunt with my friend and client. We were Paul’s first turkey hunters since he bought the ranch. Aaron,a very experienced guide and world class turkey caller, put my friend on a monster bird about 45 minutes into the first morning’shunt. I got on mybird right before nightfall on the evening’s hunt. Even with a very “comical shooting position”, Aaron called that big Tom in close and I was able to dispatch him in short order! It was great day and two good birds within a few hours of each other! If you enjoy turkey hunting, you need to come to Boomer. As for the ranch itself, it is beautiful. The accommodations were clean and spacious and the kitchen had everything needed to prepare meals including several grills outside to cook your steaks. Sitting outside at night at the fire pit, in the clean country air with a cold drink is a great way to cap off the evening. Honestly, I would recommend the Boomer Ranch to anyone looking for a good hunt in a very relaxed atmosphere. Thanks Paul for a great hunt! Matt Pyle, Houston, Tx.
My neighbor is an experienced hunter and I was filling the novice role. This was my first deer hunt so naturally I was a little nervous. Fortunately, Paul and our guide, Richard, were extremely helpful and patient. They both are very knowledgeable and more than willing to share. They helped me settle in and have an unforgettable time. My neighbor got a nice, healthy 9 point buck. I was there to shoot a doe, but was fortunate enough to get a little larger spike. As for the ranch itself, it was fantastic. The accommodations were clean and spacious and the kitchen had everything needed to prepare meals. Sitting outside at night at the fire pit, looking at the stars and hearing the nearby creek was a great way to relax. Honestly, I would recommend spending time at Boomer Ranch even if you weren’t a hunter. Looking forward to my next trip to Boomer Ranch! Seth Rademacher, Houston, Tx.
I spent some time with Boomer Ranch owner, Paul touring the Boomer Ranch acreage recently. I found it to be a beautiful ranch with comfortable facilities. It has exciting wildlife within its borders Plenty of whitetail deer and turkey with some nice quality of both bucks and gobblers to challenge serious hunters. I think this would definitely be a ranch where you can enjoy the edge of the Texas Hill Country while knowing a good trophy could be just over the next hill or on the other side of the gorgeous creek running through the ranch. Give the Boomer Ranch a try! Robert Linder, Texas State NWTF Board, RMEF and Texas Outdoor Partners
The first trip I made to the Boomer Ranch was for a deer hunt in 2015. My neighbor and I were the second and third hunters to stay at the ranch after it opened. It’s a great camp with a comfortable fully stocked ranch house on some beautiful land in Lampasas County. Paul is an excellent ranch manager and host, and we had a great guide(Richard) who knew the ranch and the deer herd well. I was able to harvest a healthy 9 point management buck that scored 136. My neighbor shot his first deer, a really nice spike, the following morning. The quality and variety of deer are impressive. We’ll definitely be back for more hunts, and I’d recommend this ranch to any hunter, novice or expert. The second trip I made to the Boomer Ranch was for a turkey hunt. It was the inaugural, and we were fortunate enough to take the first and second Toms since Paul bought the place. I saw all the turkey for the first time on our deer hunt in 2015. I told Paul, you have to let people hunt turkey here; there were just too many of them not to offer that. So he put together a hunt for a fellow hunter and me. Again, a very experienced guide and caller(Aaron) put me on a monster bird about 45 minutes into the hunt. My buddy got the second turkey right before nightfall. Great day and two great birds within hours of each other! If you enjoy turkey hunting, you need to come to this ranch. Michael Kasmiersky, Houston, Tx.
The Boomer Ranch is a wildlife sanctuary that provides many opportunities and a relaxing setting for the both the hunter and outdoor enthusiast. The Boomer Ranch is the epitome of employed productive wildlife practices which are apparent throughout the property with beautiful habitat and abundant game. I went to the Boomer Ranch in December 2015 with my neighbor. We had a great time and would recommend it to anyone looking for a successful hunt, experienced hunter or novice. A Fun & Adventurous Weekend at Ox Ranch

Entrance to Ox Ranch

As we were signing in and admiring the magnificent Lodge and all of the wildlife mounted on the walls, Larry walked up and said “I’m your guide for the weekend and it’s my goal to make sure that you have a great time during your stay” – and he more than accomplished that goal.

A couple of Texas Outside visitors had sent me an email saying the we need to check out Ox Ranch. And after a visit to their website we immediately called and booked a weekend stay. Ox Ranch is quickly turning into and gaining a reputation as one of the finest resorts in Texas thanks to their luxurious cabins, fine dining, lots of fun activities, and thousands of exotic wildlife for hunting, photography, or observing in the wild.

A large part of what makes Ox Ranch so special is that it’s owner Brent Oxley, who purchased the property in 2013, has set a goal of “creating the finest hunting ranch the world has ever seen.” I’m no hunting ranch expert but from my perspective he’s far exceeded that goal already:

  • the diversity, topography, and water features (creeks and 50 acres of lakes) on his 18,000 acres with over 33 miles of high fence set the Ranch apart from the competition

Animals at Ox Ranch

  • there are over 100 miles of roads carved through the property that can be used for hunting, biking, hiking, ATVing, or wildlife tours
  • the log cabin lodging is unique and rustic, as well as upscale and comfortable and dining is truly a gourmet experience
  • the staff is first class – friendly, outgoing, and committed to making sure that you have a very memorable experience
  • the 5800 foot paved and lighted runway is perfect for guests with their own plane
  • the hunting is outstanding and diverse and you’re guaranteed 100% success
  • and the non-hunting experiences are unequalled from driving and firing a World War II tank to caving, jet skiing, or survival skills and lots more

Hunting at Ox Ranch

Ox Ranch Hunting

A large part of what makes Ox Ranch unique and special are the various options for hunting and the diverse population of animals that you can hunt, the major categories of which include: whitetail and exotic deer; 15 different types of antelope; a variety of sheep; goat; buffalo and bovine; hogs; and birds ranging from dove to ostrich or turkey. And there are a lot of other animals to hunt like kangaroo or zebra. See this Ox Ranch Hunting Game Page for a list of what you can hunt on Ox Ranch.

Elk at Ox Ranch

  • 10 windows for shooting on 1000s of acres with 5 game feeders at ranges from 300 to over 800 yards visibility from the blind
  • 8 game cameras and a high tech display system
  • air conditioning and heating
  • a game table, fully stocked bar, refrigerator, and ice maker
  • comfortable swivel chairs

Each group of guests (usually up to 4 or 5 hunters) is assigned to an experienced guide and is guaranteed 100% success – wounded animals are not guaranteed. In addition to lodging and dining, the hunting packages also include: weaponry, field dressing, and transportation of your animal to a local meat processor and taxidermist. In addition to hunts, your guides can take you to the archery range, one of two gun ranges, the 5 station skeet range, or let you shoot a 50 caliber or any of several machine guns.

Larry our Ox Ranch Guide

Larry was like what I would envision a horse whisperer to be – he has a true love for all the wildlife from a horny toad to a giraffe and he had names for a number of them. As we drove around the Ranch he was constantly yelling out the window for Tom, Bacon, Julie, or Jerry, or any of the wildlife he’s named and on several occasions to our surprise out of the brush would appear a giraffe, a water buffalo, some type of deer or something else that would meander or, in some cases, gallop up to the truck to be petted and fed by Larry and us. He would call them by name, pet and feed them, and talk to them like they were a part of his family! A lot of the animals found out where Larry lived and they loved hanging around his house waiting for a handout. During our tour Larry coached a couple Watusi Cattle out of the brush to show us one of them that was sick. I thought Larry was on the verge of tears as he told the story of this poor Watusi that he thinks got an ear infection that has now caused him to not be able to hold his head straight – the weight of his right horn has forced his head and neck to tilt on a severe angle to the right – he’ll most likely not survive.

Larry feeding a giraffe

One of the things that we all thoroughly enjoyed during our stay at Ox Ranch was what I would call a “wildlife tour” in Larry’s pickup truck. We spent several hours driving the back roads in search of wildlife. As we drove through the Ranch Larry would point out and tell us a little bit about the animal we were looking at, or something about the Ranch history, or some hunting experience, or something about the landscape or fauna. He would also stop, call out some animal, give us a few tips like approach slowly and keep your hand flat, and then hand us something to feed the animals. We had ostrich, pigs, and deer eating corn out of our hands, got within 6 feet of several animals, fed the giraffe carrots, and had camels and kangaroos eating bananas out of our hands! A unique experience that the grandkids and the wife and I will never forget. We’ve visited several wildlife and safari parks in Texas and nothing came close to comparing what we experienced at Ox Ranch.

Feeding a kangaroo

Other Fun Activities At Ox Ranch

Ox Ranch is best known for hunting, but if free chase hunting isn’t your thing there are plenty of other activities to keep you and/or the kids busy. You can:

  • take a wildlife safari tour and hand-feed several animals like giraffe, camels, ostrich, and more
  • tour a small cave

Kayaking at Ox Ranch

  • enjoy a fun and exciting ATV tour
  • catch some bass – typical lakes are stocked with 40 bass per acre but at Ox Ranch the ponds have 100 bass per acre
  • go swimming in any of the 5 ponds or the new swimming pool
  • enjoy a jet ski ride or board or tube behind a jet ski

driving and firing a tank

We asked the Chef for an early dinner (8:00) so we could go night vision hunting as soon as it got dark. Around 9 we jumped in Larry’s truck and headed to Big Blind. The technology in the blind is amazing – cameras showed us exactly what was at each of the nearby feeders, which Larry could set off by remote control to spray feed and attract the animals who within minutes would appear out of nowhere to eat. When we saw a lot of hogs at a feeder, Larry would confirm with night vision binoculars (worth $12,000), and one of the grandkids would confirm he saw the same target through the rifles night vision scope and then he took a shot. Meanwhile I ate snacks and drank beer – loved it!

Red Stag excited about their new home on Ox Ranch

Lodging at Ox Ranch

the lodge at Ox Ranch

Our cabin was made from recycled barn wood and the deck that wraps around the entire cabin had wooden rocking chairs, tables, and lots of antiques – an old scale, grinding wheel, milk container, farm implements, and an antique wheelchair. The inside of the cabin was luxuriously appointed with a soft leather couch with a matching chair and a half, lamp and side table, coffee table, wood floor with an animal skin rug, small table with a bowl of snacks and 4 chairs. a huge stone fireplace, 5 mounted animal heads (a Kudu from Africa, 2 Scimitar Horned Oryx from Africa, and an Eland which is the largest North American Antelope at over 1600 pounds), an espresso machine, small refrigerator filled with Miller Lite (Ox Ranch called us before we arrived and ask what we like to drink and then stocked our refrigerator) and some water and soft drinks, and a free bar with Tito’s Vodka, Jack Daniels, Captain Morgan, and Gray Goose. Scattered around our cabin were several antiques including an old fashioned phone that actually worked.

Inside our cabin at Ox Ranch

The bathroom had a copper sink, huge soft bath towels that rivaled those found in the best resorts, a toilet and a glass enclosed tile shower with two shower heads. One bedroom downstairs had a very comfy full bed and the loft upstairs had a full bed and two twin beds. The cabin was nicely appointed, clean, and brand new.

Dining at Ox Ranch

After all of those activities the four of us were starving and looking forward to loading back up on some carbs to keep us going. During our visit we enjoyed two delicious dinners, two scrumptious lunches and two great breakfasts.

The Master Chef, Eric, trained at Le Cordon Bleu and specializes in French cuisine, exotic game, and old-fashioned country cooking. The vast majority of the ingredients are sourced from the ranch – wild game, the organic garden, Jersey cows, range chickens, the orchard, and local beehives. Here’s an example of one of the meals that Eric cooked for us:

  • a delicious appetizer of roasted poblano and tomatio succulent cornmeal fried oysters with citrus roasted sweet corn – wow, delicious and I begged and pleaded and finally got to devour my youngest grandson’s portions
  • a wonderful and perfectly cooked entree of pan roasted chicken breast over wild mushroom orzo topped with dried sherry wine reduction and lemon and white wine broiled asparagus
  • desert was a melt in your mouth dark chocolate cake with a braised dark cherry sauce with toasted almonds – good thing there were two of them because the grandson demanded that I repay him for his appetizer

Chicken dinner at Ox Ranch

Breakfast and lunch and our other dinner (tender oven roasted pork loin, bacon wrapped quail with raspberry chipotle sauce, green beans wrapped in prosciutto, and pineapple sweet potatoes) were equally delicious. To allow guests to maximize their hunting and activity time, breakfast is served around 9, lunch around 2, and dinner at dark.

Bottom Line

Wow, Ox Ranch has it all – unequalled hunting, luxury accommodations, gourmet dining, first class service, beautiful scenery, plentiful wildlife, and lots of fun things to do. It’s perfect for a hunting trip, a fun weekend getaway, a corporate event or reunion or even a wedding. What are you waiting for – call and book a stay.

Texas Hunting License

If you are only hunting hogs, there is NO HUNTING LICENSE REQUIRED! We do not sell hunting licenses at our ranch, but you can buy them online, at most sporting goods stores and Walmart in Texas as well as the department of parks and wildlife. There are 3 places to purchase them in Rusk if you are available during business hours. A five-day temporary license is all you need unless you are hunting whitetails, in which case you need a full annual hunting license. Out-of-state fees are $48 + $5 convenience fee for the 5 days and $315 for the non-resident annual. The annual is only needed at our ranch for Whitetail hunts. This is only available during Texas Whitetail Hunting Season. Usually the first weekend in October through the first weekend in January.

MISCELLANEOUS

Gratuities for the guides are not required but much appreciated. The guides will earn it! We are often asked how much is appropriate to tip the guides. We recommend tipping what you are comfortable with. The average is typically $100 to $150 per guest.

We strive to give you an experience, not just a hunt. We like to say it’s a bed and breakfast or country club hunting trip! Our goal is to make you a friend for life and hopefully a return guest many times over. All of this is included in your quoted price. There are no extra fees for skinning animals, meals, drinks, guides, etc.

Whitetail Deer

Monday August 29th, 2022 we were notified by Texas Parks & Wildlife that Rock Water Ranch, a whitetail deer registered release site, has been moved to non-movement qualified status. This means that we cannot purchase or bring in any whitetail deer until we become movement qualified once again. This process could take up to 5 years.

We were moved to non-movement qualified because in 2020 one of the trophy whitetail bucks we bought and released legally came from a registered whitetail deer breeding facility that had a completely different deer test positive for CWD on August 29th, 2022.

That’s right, the test was on a completely different deer, two years after we purchased our deer, but on the same ranch and from the same breeder that we purchased our deer from. By the way, that deer was harvested at our ranch that very hunting season.

We do not believe we have CWD on our ranch, but we are required to comply with the plan Texas Parks & Wildlife come up for our ranch.

THIS ONLY PERTAINS TO WHITETAIL DEER

So we will still be offering whitetail deer hunts in Texas, but they will be at partner ranches.

Unlimited Hogs + Varmints

Skinning + Quartering of Harvested Game

  • -- Meat Hunt --
  • -- 5 Day Buck Hunt --

This semi-guided deer hunt includes two full days of hunting and allows a quick method to fill the freezer. One Whitetail doe and unlimited wild hogs.

With five full days, your greatest chance of a successful Texas deer hunt lay in this package. High Whitetail populations have provided near 90% success rates on this semi-guided hunt, and mature bucks average around 135 inches.

Texas Deer Hunting Ranches

Central texas ranch info.

Our Winters ranch in Central Texas is approximately 2,800 acres. We have several miles of running creek throughout the property, along with ponds and active water wells. Along with over 800 acres of wheat fields and food plots, there is an abundance of bedding areas, food, and water. Wild hogs are in mass abundance here and are included in our Texas deer hunts at no extra cost. Accommodations are available in town about 10 minutes from the property, and there are several restaurants to choose from as well.

Whitetail Management Strategy

We follow a simple strategy to fulfill our Whitetail management goals. Don’t shoot young deer, and provide the best habitat possible. This ranch produces larger than average deer because of it’s long-term management systems, and it will continue to do so for years to come.

Photo of Clay Herzog while Texas Deer Hunting

Food plots, protein, sweet feed, corn, mineral blocks, and cattle cubes are all used throughout specific times of year at both ranches to maximize the potential of our Texas deer hunting.

Deer Hunting Method

Prone Outfitters Whitetail deer hunts are all still-hunts. To control the amount of pressure throughout the season, we do not allow spot and stalk.  While we do use the blind/feeder method, mature Whitetail bucks aren’t stupid.

When we feel it necessary, we will stray from the blinds and begin using home-made brush blinds, tripods, and pop-up blinds. If we can get you on a deer from a comfortable blind, that’s great! But we will sacrifice comfort for a higher chance at your success any day of the week!

Semi-Guided Hunt

A “semi-guided” hunt means your guide will be at the ranch to drop you off at your blind, pick you up, help skin/quarter game, and answer any questions throughout your stay. While we're not physically there with you, rest assured we've spent plenty of time preparing your designated hunting area.

what time of year should you

Hunt deer in texas.

Almost everyone wants to hunt Texas Whitetail in the rut, and while it is a fantastic time to be in the field, it is not necessarily the BEST time of year for everything.

In our opinion, the pre-rut is the easiest time to deer hunt in Texas. Because they are comfortable, their patterns are much easier to follow and the amount of time you have to shoot is typically longer as well.

On the other hand, once the rut hits you’re going to see a ton of deer! Which deer you see will be up to the Deer Gods, as they’ll be running around everywhere with their brains in the gutter. If a buck is on a hot doe, he may only show himself for a few seconds. If you’re playing thumbsies with yourself instead of paying attention, we’ll both have a rough week.

Late season, or the post-rut, is a similar combination of both. While we do have a second rut, it’s often short and deer are back to a fairly consistent schedule. By this time of year deer are more alert, and hunting blinds becomes less and less common. This is when pop-ups and home-made ground blinds become most useful, as long as the weather permits.

when should you book your

Texas deer hunt.

We recommend booking your Texas Deer hunt a year in advance due to limited availability. It may seem like a lot of ground, but we harvest very few deer off this ranch to ensure continued stability.

Another hunt, another weekend when Hill Country spring turkeys win again | Leggett

This young gobbler seems to be trying to hide behind a single blade of grass at Camp Verde Ranch. Gobbling has pretty much shut down in the Hill Country for spring turkey hunting.

CAMP VERDE — Killis LaGrone was 30 yards away, across a cattle guard, tiptoeing toward a clump of juniper that stuck out into the road. That’s where he was headed because I had done something I knew wasn’t smart and that no good would come from it.

It was the final morning of a spring turkey hunt, and I really wanted Killis to get a turkey. It had been close on to 40 years since I called up a turkey for him on the South Fork Ranch west of Kerrville.

“That’s the last turkey I killed,” he’d told me over beers the night before.

Killis grew up in Deadwood in deep East Texas, and there were no turkeys there in those days. I had gotten him to come down from Panola County, where he still lives, thinking in my dull brain that early to mid-April would be the perfect time for gobblers to be running to a call on Camp Verde Ranch.

Years ago, a friend and I had spent enough Aprils hunting turkeys down there to determine that April 20 was the perfect time to start our hunt. That worked well for two decades, but somewhere in there the turkeys changed what they were doing.

Mid-April became the best time for peak gobbling, and I had learned that during the last two seasons while hunting there with Maurice Estlinbaum. Maurice, still going hard at 83, had actually killed two random turkeys in 2023, but there wasn’t much gobbling. By the time we arrived at the ranch, hens were bred and the gobblers had shut down.

A slow start to a slow weekend for gobblers

There were very few gobbles on the roost, and we weren’t hearing anything after 7 a.m. Killis and I tried setting up before daylight close to a roost down along Verde Creek. We had seen three mature gobblers heading down that way just before dark the afternoon before and were kind of stunned that the gobbling quit as soon the first bird hit the ground.

We tried walking the roads, listening and calling, to find a gobbler to hunt. Maurice set up in a horse trap near the house and killed a gobbler the second afternoon. The bird came to the call off a large mountain to the west. By sheer determination Maurice managed to find another gobbler the very next morning.

Out of desperation, I made a loop off through the ranch and to the fence separating that trap from the rest of the ranch. We had turkeys calling and answering our calls from daylight the next day.

Two gobblers came down through a thick stand of junipers to a spot they figured was good for them to attract a hen. We could see them through the brush where we were hiding, but they refused to close the 75 yards between us. They strutted and gobbled for a long time but would not come on in — a sure sign that those gobblers were done for the season.

Needing a change in strategy

After half an hour, I gave up on moving them close and suggested that Killis sneak up the road to a point where he could step around the junipers and whack one of the gobblers as he strutted in the road. In the background, I could hear gobblers answering every yelp I made. He was coming kind of fast, and I didn’t pick up on what was happening.

Finally, I realized the gobbler behind me was coming right to us and had been for 10 minutes. I tried to hiss a message to Killis, but it turned out to be too late. My fuzzy brain could not connect the dots from us to the fast-closing gobbler.

Finally I stood and tried to get Killis’ attention, but to no avail. I knew by the sound that the gobbler to the south of us was close, and I turned to check him out. He was just stepping out from behind a clump of brush, and we locked eyes across 75 yards of open ground.

I didn’t even carry a shotgun that morning, and it was a classic case of trying to pretend that we didn’t see each other. I dropped to a knee while the one gobbler that had come to the call all week turned his head and disappeared back behind the brush.

Killis finally turned back toward me, and I signaled him to return. He made it as the close gobbler crossed through a fence and went invisible. He never called again, either.

I always say that I don’t want to turkey hunt with anybody who’s not smarter than a turkey, but I realize I’d been doing that already for many years. Only the pea brain in this case was little old me.

Killis went home without a turkey and promised we would come back in a year, but in early April. If we’re still alive, of course.
