7 Must-Know Tips for Visiting Kennedy Space Center

Visiting Kennedy Space Center (KSC) isn’t supposed to be rocket science. But I guess, in a way, it is.

I mean, before my first visit to Kennedy Space Center, I had a million and one questions.

Is the bus tour included in admission? How long is the tour? Can I purchase tickets online? Can I skip the line ( because patience and I don’t get along like we used to )? Why is the location listed as Orlando when it’s actually in Cape Canaveral? And is KSC even on Cape Canaveral or is it on Merritt Island?

So by the time I got to the wide concrete path leading up to KSC’s iconic tall white building, I was more than confused.

Until I wasn’t.

Just a few seconds before I entered, one simple word blocked over the KSC entrance, in clear sky blue, brought clarity: EXPLORE.

So that’s just what I did – explore. And during that time, I learned a few things to do (and not to do) whilst visiting Kennedy Space Center.

Here are 7 tips you need to know before visiting Kennedy Space Center.

Know Where To Purchase Your Ticket

There are a lot of places that “sell” Kennedy Space Center tickets. Most of the websites you see online offering KSC tours are either a) just general admission tickets ( not a personal guided tour as they’d have you believe – how rude ) or b) a scam.

If you want to purchase your ticket online before visiting Kennedy Space Center, you can do so here (on Kennedy Space Center’s official website).

Kennedy Space Center Tip: If you purchase your ticket online, make sure you print out your ticket before arriving! You need to have printed tickets to enter KSC.

Several companies also offer skip the line tickets, which is exactly what I crave at the Chicago O’Hare Airport ( yikes ), but out here – on Merrit Island – not so much.

I purchased my tickets in-person while visiting Kennedy Space Center and I don’t regret that decision one bit!

Your ticket ($75 per adult) includes admission to:

• Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour ( this is how you visit the Apollo/Saturn V Center )
• Rocket Launch Viewing ( if available )
• The Exhibits
• Astronaut Encounter
• Rocket Garden

When you purchase in-person, you get a map and a list of showtimes ( the map is kind of clunky, but the list of showtimes is incredibly helpful ).

P.S. Your ticket does not include parking. If you’re planning on visiting Kennedy Space Center by car, parking will set you back an extra $10.

Know That You Should Avoid Visiting Kennedy Space Center On The Busiest Days

Visiting Kennedy Space Center during the holiday season (between Christmas and New Year) can be overwhelming.

To be honest, KSC isn’t usually a crowded attraction ( I’ve always been able to get in and out of lines in roughly 20 minutes ).

But in the wintertime and summertime (when school is out), the waits border on hectic.

Try to visit Kennedy Space Center on a weekday morning if you can. Go early. KSC opens at 9 AM ( you can park at 8:30 ) and closes at 6PM.

The big bucket list items are the Bus Tour and Space Shuttle Atlantis. Head to those attractions first!

And if you have the time, opt for an early or late lunch outside ( there’s always a rush in the parking lot at noon ).

Kennedy Space Center Tip: Most restaurants and eateries at KSC close at 2 PM. If you’re planning on eating there, try to pick up a bite as early as possible (to guarantee seating).

My first time visiting Kennedy Space Center, I ate at Moon Rock Cafe .

I got to dine under the Apollo 5 Rocket ( which at first, made my nerdy heart sing for joy ). But to be honest, the menu is limited and crazy expensive. I just ate there because I didn’t know you could leave KSC and re-enter later on in the day ( if you plan on doing this, remember to get your hand stamped ).

Know That There’s A Bus Tour

The bus tour was hands-down my favorite part of visiting Kennedy Space Center.

The bus departs every fifteen minutes from the Visitor Complex and transports you to the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

Kennedy Space Center Tip: The last bus tour (which lasts 45 minutes) departs 2.5 hours before closing. Don’t miss this attraction!

At the Firing Room Theater, the scene is set. You enter the Space Era. The race to launch a rocket is on. Sputnik threatens USA’s Superpower status. Worry brews.

This virtual tour is guided by a former launch controller so the experience is surreal. You feel like you’re listening to a memoir instead of a traditional guide. I loved every second of it!

Right outside is the Saturn V moon rocket. I still can’t believe this monstrosity is the size of a football field! Ridiculous, huh?

For Apollo 13 fans ( I’ve seen that movie way too times ), you can even see James Lovell’s spacesuit. Ah, fangirl moments.

After stopping by the Lunar Theater, exit towards Apollo Treasure Gallery, where Alan Shepard’s spacesuit and a bit of his lunar module, the Kitty Hawk, reside.

Alan Shepard is the most underrated astronaut in the Apollo 11 Mission. I can’t begin to describe how excited I was to see a commemoration to him.

Exploring space is like taking part in a stage performance. Just because we know the names of the lead actors (Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin) doesn’t mean that the makeup artists and costume designers aren’t essential.

Know The Bag Policy Before Visiting Kennedy Space Center

I huff and slide my bag over my shoulder.

Having my belongings screened while visiting Kennedy Space Center isn’t unexpected, but the process is tiresome and slow ( think Flash from Zootopia ).

Here’s what you can and can not bring during your Kennedy Space Center visit:

Know What To Do In The Rain

The sky is overcast, weighed down by a deep, broody gray. Rain begins to fall to the ground in heavy plops.

I duck inside. Afternoon showers in Florida are common.

And after spending two days visiting Kennedy Space Center, I was incredibly grateful for the wealth of indoor attractions ( considering it was raining 90% of my Florida trip ).

• Journey to Mars: This is a theater presentation followed by some multimedia exhibits that really get into the logistics of running a mission to the red planet. You can see prototypes of food that might grow on Martian soil. Unfortunately, the whole lab wasn’t filled with potatoes, but I’m okay with a non-potato diet ( Martian reference – I highly recommend picking Andy Weir’s book for the plane ).
• The Atlantis Zone: The Atlantis, a mammoth space shuttle rotated 43.21 degrees, is held in The Atlantis Zone. If you’re visiting Kennedy Space Center with kids, note that there are lots of interactive exhibits here.
• Imax Theatre: There are three different shows available daily. Since I had a two-day pass, I opted to see all three. Arrive early if you want to catch a glimpse of the 3D IMAX movie in particular ( this one gets filled fast ).

Know These 5 Kennedy Space Center Tips

It’s getting late. The sun has dipped. Blank white canvases of rockets penetrate a flaming sky.

• The Rocket Garden is best seen in the afternoon . Walking among some of NASA’s early rockets feels surreal. The garden is located by the front entrance, near the Heroes & Legends exhibit, and it’s one of those places that leaves a big impression.
• High-tail your way to Atlantis . Atlantis is the most popular attraction at KSC. The exhibit takes a full hour to see. It’s engaging and immersive and all-around fun.
• After enjoying the Atlantis Exhibit, get in line for the 10 AM bus tour.
• There’s a ride. Just one. The Shuttle Launch Experience. And I’ve heard it’s good. I didn’t really have the stomach for this since I was a  little  nervous (I’m not really one for rides).
• Watching a shuttle launch is included with admission ! I’m so mad I didn’t know about this before visiting Kennedy Space Center. I’ll link the launch calendar here .

Know That Kennedy Space Center Is Worth A Visit

Because the admission price is so steep, it’s hard to determine whether visiting Kennedy Space Center is worth it.

But after wandering through the Atlantis Exhibit, relaxing on a quiet bus tour, and standing amongst the larger than life rockets, I’m certain of one thing: KSC is magical.

It’s not magical in the same way Disney is. This is a place with real-life magic – a magic twisted from science and engineering.

And I guess that’s what makes it the perfect day trip from Orlando.

I went here when I was a kid and fully intended to take my kids for a visit when we went to Florida last February. We had just had a new baby, and I completely underestimated how difficult traveling with a little one can be. We ended up nixing the space center. We go to Florida fairly often because we have family there; so hopefully we will do this on our next visit. Thanks for sharing

Yes, you should totally head up there the next time you visit! It can tough to travel with small children, but fortunately the KSC doesn’t have many long lines, unlike theme parks, which is great when you have kids in tow.

This is the best write up on the KSC I’ve read. I grew up in Orlando and just took my English fiance there last year (who has never been exposed to the space program like I had) and he cannot stop talking about it to this day. Also gorgeous pictures. 🙂

I'm trying to decide between staying in Orlando or out at the coast - does anyone have any recommendations as to where to stay?

I'll be hiring a car , travelling alone and am happy to invest in good facilities and great service. Any advice and suggestions gratefully received.

While in the area, in addition to the Space Center Complex we've also enjoyed kayaking in the surrounding Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge with this company: http://www.adayawaykayaktours.com/home.html The birds, dolphins and manatees were amazing.

Several hotels are nice, including the Hilton .

A drive down to Sebastian Inlet can be worthwhile. The State Park has a museum at a survivors' campsite from the lost 1715 Spanish treasure fleet. Also a fishing museum.

Pioneering spaceflight and innovation

In July 1962, the Launch Operations Center was established, and by December 1963, it was renamed the John F. Kennedy Space Center.

Launch pads and towers rose one by one above the scrub land, dotting the shoreline of Florida’s East Coast. By 1960, the Missile Firing Laboratory had become an extension of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. On July 1, 1962, NASA officially activated the Launch Operations Center at the seaside spaceport, granting the center equal status to Marshall and offering the center’s new director, Dr. Kurt H. Debus, a direct report to the agency’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. The following year the center was renamed to honor the president who put America on the path to the Moon.

Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Located just a few miles from the Kennedy Space Center, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful and peaceful nature reserve that's home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Visitors can hike, bike, or drive through the refuge, and there are plenty of opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife viewing.

Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour

The bus tour takes visitors on a guided tour of the centre, including stops at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, the launch pads, and the Vehicle Assembly Building.

Day or night, watching a rocket launch on the beach is so Florida. We’re especially lucky to see this on the Space Coast — it’s why we earned our moniker.

But it turns out our neighbors to the North and South of us can get a spectacular view of a rocket launch from Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral . Weather permitting and depending on cloud cover, of course.

Below are suggestions on where and how to watch a rocket launch from Ormond Beach to Fort Pierce and what to know about this weekend’s SpaceX doubleheader.

Though SpaceX has not publicly announced this mission, a National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency navigational warning shows this launch window will open Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Where to watch a SpaceX rocket launch from Space Coast of Florida

Pretty much anywhere  in Brevard, you'll get a view of the rocket  launch. The best view to watch a rocket launch from the Space Coast is along the beach. However, visibility will depend on weather conditions and people should make sure not to block traffic or rights of way on bridges and to follow posted rules at beaches.

If you are viewing the launch along the Indian River in Titusville from Space View Park or Parrish Park, look east directly across the river.

If you are farther south along the Indian River, look northeast.

Playalinda Beach or Canaveral National Seashore is the closest spot to view liftoff because it is almost parallel to Launch Pad 39A. On the beach, look south along the coastline, (you can even see the pad from some spots).

The best views to watch a rocket launch around here is along the beach.

How about watching a rocket launch in Volusia County ?

Watching a rocket launch  or  waiting for that launch window  while at the beach is a pretty Florida thing to do.

In Volusia County, immediately north of Brevard County, you can get a great view of a SpaceX, NASA or United Launch Alliance rocket launch.

The  best views to watch a rocket launch from here  is along the beach. Look due south.

• South New Smyrna Beach  (Canaveral National Seashore), there may be parking costs. New Smyrna Beach features 17 miles of white sandy beaches. An eclectic and quaint beach town, despite its reputation as the "Shark Bite Capital of the World," New Smyrna Beach has always been a haven for surfers who come for the waves.

Dinner and a launch:  Perfect for a SpaceX or NASA rocket launch, best waterfront restaurants in Volusia County

• Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park , 6656 S. Atlantic Ave., New Smyrna Beach. Bethune Beach, which is 3.5 miles south of New Smyrna Beach and one mile north of the Apollo Beach entrance to Canaveral National Seashore Park, has restrooms, picnic pavilions, showers and nearly 800 feet of beachfront sidewalk,  according to Volusia County's site . The nearby riverside park area is across South Atlantic Avenue with tennis courts, pickle ball courts, basketball and volleyball courts, playground, fishing pier and restrooms. The river by the park can be a great viewing spot for manatees, dolphins and pelicans.
• Apollo Beach  at  Canaveral National Seashore  (south of New Smyrna Beach). Canaveral National Seashore runs along Florida's East Coast in Volusia County and Brevard County. To access Apollo Beach, take Interstate 95 to exit 249, then travel east until it turns into State Road A1A. Follow SR A1A south to the park entrance.
• Oak Hill riverfront  is the  southernmost city in South Volusia County .
• Sunrise Park , 275 River Road, Oak Hill
• Goodrich's Seafood and Oyster House  back deck, 253 River Road, Oak Hill
• Seminole Rest national historic site , 211 River Road, Oak Hill
• Riverbreeze Park , 250 H.H. Burch Road, Oak Hill
• Mary Dewees Park , 178 N. Gaines St., Oak Hill. Facilities include a rental building, playground, baseball field, basketball courts, tennis courts, outdoor restrooms, pavilions, picnic areas and grills.
• Nancy Cummings Park , 232 Cummings St., Oak Hill. Facilities include a playground, baseball field, basketball courts, outdoor pavilion and restrooms.
• Jimmie Vann Sunrise Park , 275 River Road, Oak Hill. This location has about 350 feet of beautifully restored shoreline, according to the city of Oak Hill online. Facilities include a pavilion, picnic tables and kayak launching facilities.
• A.C. Delbert Dewees Municipal Pier , 243 River Road, Oak Hill. Facilities include a 520-foot observation pier with two covered decks and seating, the city of Oak Hill site states.
• Bird Observation Pier  on River Road across from A.C. Delbert Municipal Pier (see above). Facilities include a 100-foot observation pier.

Blast off to infinite fun: Rediscovering the feeling 'anything is possible' at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

Noisy excited chatter pierces the air punctuated by requests for ‘bags open for inspection please’ but then, once through the turnstiles, hush, calm, reverence, almost like stepping into a vacuum.

Looking around, I’m not alone in feeling this way. It’s that first moment when you find yourself looking upwards at the heavens from the shadow of the Rocket Garden at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex that it crashes over you like a wave.

This is somewhere special, a place where dreams were dreamed, and tinkered with, and put out into the world, and history is forever changed because of it.

If you need a rundown of that history, and time your arrival for one of the guided tours, the Rocket Garden which pays homage to NASA’s Mercury, Gemini and Apollo progammes, is the perfect spot to quickly brush up on your space facts, gather your bearings– and squeeze in a selfie or two.

Otherwise chart a course for the Atlantis attraction where you’ll find the mighty space shuttle suspended seemingly weightlessly from the ceiling.

Atlantis flew 33 missions to space before being decommissioned in 2011. It’s angled with the payload doors open to give an up close and personal look of the astronauts quarters, and peering inside you can, at a squint of the eyes and the imagination picture the scene: the nerves mounting at an equal rate to the excitement, that first shuddering start, the wonder at what was before them, the worry for who was left behind waiting for their safe return.   

It’s probably the closest us earth dwellers will ever get to outer space.

‘Everything floats in space,’ quips astronaut Ken Cameron delicately answering that age-old bathroom question we’ve all wondered at, but which it took a child to ask.

Kennedy Space Center offers a Chat With An Astronaut add-on option with general ticket admission, and which (I promise) will be the highlight of any trip to the park.

Ken started his career in the US marines, touring all over the world, including a stint in Vietnam during the war before being selected for the NASA programme in the early eighties. 

He flew for 30 years and still recalls that first glimpse of outer space, remembering it as one does a first idealised romance: ‘When you look out the window, the earth is half of everything you can see and in the other direction, there’s nothing, there’s nothing there for millions of miles, there’s nothing for a long, long way, and it’s beautiful.’

His real first love is his wife of fifty years (they had just celebrated their wedding anniversary during our visit) even if he has found himself caught in a tug-of-war battle between the two over the years.

One of his biggest dilemmas came down to a bowl of chilli. Astronauts preselect their meal options which are then freeze dried or run through a machine to kill bacteria because there are no refrigerators in space. 

Ken explains: ‘My wife is a trained cook and when we were newly trained astronaut candidates we had to sign up for the chilli cookoff, at the Johnson Space Center (in Texas)… and our candidate team won the chilli cookoff based on her research into the spices and the whole thing, the way they were judged, it was astonishing and horrifying to everyone else at Johnson Space Center that these new guys could win.

‘A few years went by, and I went to the food lab, and I said “well you’ve got no chilli on your menu” and that’s probably because people associate chilli and beans and other people associate beans and inside of a spacecraft as maybe not being a good idea but there’s no beans in real chilli.’

‘They said “Look have your wife cook up three gallons of chilli bring it in we’ll test it and if it passes the test then we’ll process it for flight.”

‘So now I’ve got a real problem’ he recalls ‘if they reject her chilli who do I go with her or NASA? He naturally went with her but breathed a sigh of relief when her chilli passed the inspection.

 Chilli anecdotes aside, Ken knows better than anyone the strain space life can put on a marriage.

‘I’ve been married a long time and I was a pilot when we met, her dad had been a flier so I think she understood some of the separation that’s involved and the separation is a real strain on the marriage because we had two boys and she did more of the raising of them, when I was with NASA than I was able to,’ he concedes.

That separation comes on the top of the very real threat to life. Ken’s most terrifying encounter came while still on the launch pad.

With the countdown clock ticking away, the computer system jumped from T minus 11 seconds back to nine minutes and no one knew why.

‘That could have been a serious bad day… have you heard of Murphy’s law? Anything that can go wrong sooner or later will, you just have to prepare for that, you just always have to be thinking what could go wrong next?

‘…the secondary rule is that we practice because there’s no situation in a spacecraft no matter how bad it is that you couldn’t make worse by doing the wrong thing,’ he says.

Forever Remembered the gut-wrenching memorial to those lost in the Challenger and Columbia disasters is the real and very moving reminder of the risks astronauts take in the name of space exploration and bring to mind John F Kennedy’s poignant words ‘We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things not because they are easy but because they hard.’

Every astronaut that has ever reached the moon has set off from the Kennedy Space Centrer and it’s President Kennedy’s race to be the first to plant a flag there that is the focus of the Apollo/ Saturn V Center.

Brace yourself for impact, nothing quite prepares you for the sight or scale of the Saturn V Rocket, one of only three such remaining rockets and which trumps the Statue of Liberty in size by around 60ft.

Venturing boldly onwards we found ourselves sucked into a time warp of controls, interactive exhibits and history making moments.

The firing room contains the same controls that allowed Apollo 8 to orbit the moon for the first time in 1968. Spoiler alert: There’s more advanced tech in your smart phone or a digital calculator than the system computer. 

The Lunar Theatre captures every heart pounding second in the build up to July 1969 when Neil Armstrong uttered the immortal words 'Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.' and wrote himself into the history books forever as the first man on the moon.

Having talked the talk, the only thing left to do was walk the moon walk- or Mars walk to be exact as I find myself hurtling through the stars on one of Spaceport KSC’s rides 'into space'. Here you might find yourself queueing for 5-10 mins but don't let that deter you, the number of repeat customers (myself included) lining up over and over, speaks for itself.

Another ride definitely worth the hype, that will send your adrenaline soaring is the VR-themed Hyperdeck that sucks you into your very own mission but be warned it might just bring out your competitive side. This ride has pre-booked slots to avoid queues.

Digesting everything the Kennedy Space Center had to offer in one sitting is doable but daunting mission, instead block off two days and plan breaks to avoid information overload.

For the latter there are plenty of pitstops enroute, ranging from salads and healthier snacks (Space Bowl Bistro) to burgers and bites (Orbit Café) to a gift shop that will leave you lost in merch and perhaps best of all for world weary parents, Planet Play, the interactive fun zone for little ones that serves wine on tap for big kids.

As for where to lay your head, local sleeping options are somewhat and deliberately limited for security reason as Kennedy is first and foremost a working space centre. The Courtyard by Marriott is a stone’s throw away but if you want to combine space learnings with a little beach time consider venturing out to dreamy New Smyrna Beach about an hour away.

The biggest takeaway from a trip to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is that it reawakens that childlike sense of awe, the feeling that anything is possible if you cast your ambitions high enough. Book your trip now and get ready to blast off.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is open from 9am - 5pm daily (closing times can vary depending on the season), last admission is 4pm. It's located 45 mins from Orlando and 50 mins from New Smyrna Beach.

Russia set to build new space center in Moscow (PHOTOS)

Russia’s new National Space Center is being constructed on the site of the Khrunichev State Space Research and Production Center in western Moscow.

On June 21, the Moscow City Architecture Committee approved the urban planning solution, according to the official website of the Moscow Mayor’s Office.

The tender to develop the architectural concept, announced in October 2019, was won by the Russian design bureau UNK Project.

According to their concept, the main component of the center will be a triangular tower in the form of a 248m-tall rocket, which will house the headquarters of Roscosmos. The facade of the building will be illuminated to create a moving-up effect. And at the base, lighting fixtures will simulate the flame of a rocket booster.

Adjoining the tower will be a long building with research labs and offices. This building will be traversed by a 545m-long central gallery, along which canteens and consumer services will be located.

In addition, the complex will feature open-air museums in U-shaped courtyards, where pieces of aerospace equipment will be suspended in the air via cables between the buildings.

The ceremonial laying of the first stone took place in September 2019, and construction is scheduled to finish by 2022.
