Planter of Seeds  is bassist/composer  Jake Leckie ’s third release as a bandleader and explores what beauty can come tomorrow from the seeds we plant today.

“Big Sur Jade”   was written on a trip Leckie took with his wife to Big Sur, CA, and is a celebration of his family and community. This swinging 5/4 blues opens with an unaccompanied bass solo, and gives an opportunity for each of the musicians to share their improvisational voices. “ Clear Skies”  is a cathartic up-tempo release of collective creative energies in fiery improvisational freedom. “ The Aquatic Uncle”  features Randal Fisher’s saxophone and is named after an Italo Calvino short story which contemplates if one can embrace the new ways while being in tune with tradition. In ancient times, before a rudder, the Starboard side of the ship was where it was steered from with a steering oar. In this meditative quartet performance, the bass is like the steering oar of the ensemble: it can control the direction of the music, and when things begin to unravel or become unhinged, a simple pedal note keeps everything grounded.

Debut Album: Nate Sabat, Bass Fiddler

Debut Album: Nate Sabat, Bass Fiddler

While this record is, at its core, a folk music album, Sabat uses the term broadly. Some tracks lean more rock (‘In the Shade’), some more pop (‘White Marble’, ‘Rabid Thoughts’), some more jazz (‘Fade Away’), but the setting ties them all together. “There’s something inherently folksy about a musician singing songs with their instrument, no matter the influences behind the compositions themselves,” Sabat notes. To be sure, there are plenty of folk songs (‘Louise’ ‘Sometimes’, ‘Eli’) and fiddling (‘Year of the Ox’) to be had here — the folk music fan won’t go hungry. There’s a healthy dose of bluegrass too (‘Orphan Annie’, ‘Lonesome Night’), clean and simple, the way Mr. Bill Monroe intended.

Many of Sharpe’s projects and recordings have been about “standing on the shoulders of ancestors, heroes and sheroes.” Among his recordings and projects, include “Running Man” (celebrating the athlete Jesse Owens), “Ain’t I A Woman” (about Sojourner Truth), and his most recent project “400: An African American Musical Portrait” (marking the 400 years from 1619 to 2019).

Recorded once again at Scheps’ studio, drums and bass were recorded live, the only overdubs being vocals and some bass and accordion textures (Nifoussi is an accomplished accordionist). “We tracked the two together over 4 or 5 days and everything you hear was played live by talented humans, not put together after the fact.  I think that live energy is what makes the record so compelling!” says Scheps. “Andrew wanted to challenge us. We came in wired towards traditional songwriting – he wasn’t interested in that” explains Mehlbaum. “He encouraged us to think about instrumental bits that would drive the tune, as opposed to the sing-along chorus of a traditional song. As a drummer, he kicked my ass. I remember him saying “we’re gonna turn the click off. I want you to go completely ‘out of time’ then come back in.” That’s some crazy shit! But I fucking loved it.”

Concord Jazz

For two decades, the contemporary jazz quartet known as Fourplay has enjoyed consistent artistic and commercial success by grafting elements of R&B, pop and a variety of other sounds to their unwavering jazz foundations. In the course of a dozen recordings – six of which have climbed to the top of Billboard ’s Contemporary Jazz Album charts – the supergroup has continued to explore the limitless dimensions and permutations of jazz while at the same time appealing to a broad mainstream audience.

The Fourplay story begins in 1990, with keyboardist Bob James, who had already established himself as a formidable figure in keyboard jazz – not just as an instrumentalist but as a composer and arranger as well – with solo recordings dating as far back as the mid 1960s. In 1990, James reunited with his old friend, session drummer, producer, composer & recording artist Harvey Mason (Herbie Hancock, Barbra Streisand, Notorious BIG), during the recording of James’ Grand Piano Canyon album. Also involved in the project were guitarist Lee Ritenour (Sergio Mendes) and bassist/vocalist Nathan East (Barry White, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins).

The Grand Piano Canyon sessions marked the genesis of the group that eventually came to be known as Fourplay. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1991, and included a blend of jazz, R&B and pop.

The original lineup of James/Ritenour/East/Mason stayed together for three successive albums, including Elixir (1994), a set that features some high-profile guest vocalists: Phil Collins, Patti Austin and Peabo Bryson. East also delivers some noteworthy vocal contributions on Elixir, and has continued to do so throughout most of Fourplay’s subsequent studio outings.

Ritenour, whose guitar work in tandem with James’ keyboards served as the cornerstone of the early Fourplay sound, left the lineup in the mid-1990s and was replaced by Larry Carlton (The Crusaders, Joni Mitchell, Quincy Jones). Carlton made his first studio appearance with the band with the release of 4 in 1998. 4 included compositions by all four members, as well as an impressive crew of guest vocalists: El Debarge, Babyface Edmonds, Kevyn Lettau and Shanice.

Following the 1999 release of Snowbound, a mix of traditional and contemporary holiday songs, Fourplay shook things up a bit with Yes Please!, an album that challenged the standard definitions of contemporary jazz by incorporating elements of blues, funk and even Celtic music. JazzTimes critic Hilarie Grey called Yes Please! “An expansive album that incorporates each artist’s strengths, and in the process travels in some unexpected directions.” Grey added: “ Yes Please! works where similar projects fail simply because it lets its artists play, without imposing artificial boundaries.”

The sense of experimentation continued with the 2002 release of Heartfelt. The material in this set emerged from a series of improvisational performances that were assembled into full compositions. As a result, the tunes have less clearly defined melodies, but the overall album is both exploratory and accessible at the same time.

Journey, released in 2004, is a laid-back affair, but complex at the same time. Consistent with Fourplay’s eclectic philosophy, Journey incorporates a range of stylistic elements – as evidenced by such high points as the delicate cover of the 1993 Sting hit “Fields of Gold” and the Mason bossa nova flavored “Rozil.”

X followed in 2006, with guest vocals by blue-eyed-soul icon Michael McDonald, who delivers an inspired rendition of Steve Winwood’s “My Loves Leavin’.” JazzTimes called X “a softly funky, superbly crafted and unapologetically low-key album.”

Fourplay joined the prestigious roster of artists on Heads Up International, a division of Concord Music Group, with the 2008 release of Energy , which spent three consecutive weeks at the top of Billboard ’s Contemporary Jazz chart. The album grafts a variety of sounds – R&B, pop, African and more – to Fourplay’s unwavering jazz foundations. In addition to vocals by East, Energy features a vocal track by bassist Esperanza Spalding.

After 12 years with the group, Carlton left in April 2010 to delve further into his solo career, and the band welcomed its newest member, multi-faceted virtuoso guitarist, Chuck Loeb. His musical contributions undoubtedly enhance the creativity and pursuit of excellence Fourplay has enjoyed in the studio and on the stage.

Loeb made his debut with the quartet on Let’s Touch The Sky, released in October 2010. The album also includes thrilling performances by guest vocalists Anita Baker and Ruben Studdard. The infusion of new blood into the Fourplay lineup created an opportunity to bring an even higher level of energy and inspiration into a band that is already known for taking chances and pushing the limits of contemporary jazz.

Esprit De Four , Fourplay’s September 2012 release, explores the place where four unique perspectives become a single creative force. That symmetry and creativity are at the heart of the album, which included the poignant but hopeful “Put Our Hearts Together,” written by James – with lyrics by his daughter, Hilary James, and vocal featuring Japanese superstar Seiko Matsuda – as a tribute to the victims of the devastating tsunami that struck Japan in March 2011.

On Silver , set for release on November 20, 2015, Fourplay celebrates their 25th anniversary with their most wide-ranging and gratifying recording to date. Following the theme of the occasion, most of the 10 new original compositions comprising Silver play off of the anniversary, bearing titles such as “Sterling,” “Precious Metal” and “A Silver Lining.” Just like its namesake, Silver shines, each track a brilliant example of what has made this formidable ensemble – each of whom also has a highly successful career outside of the band – one of the most respected in the jazz world.

Neil Gaiman and FourPlay String Quartet Announce Debut Collaborative Album ‘Signs of Life’

By Larisha Paul

Larisha Paul

After 12 years of working together and developing an extensive collaborative partnership, Neil Gaiman and FourPlay String Quartet are ready to share their debut album. Sign of Life, which is set for release on April 28, is led by the newly-released singles “Credo” and “Bloody Sunrise.”

The latter single recounts the first-person narrative of a lovelorn vampire, just in time for Halloween while also calling back to the drama rooted at the beginning of the Sandman creator’s partnership with the string quartet, which originated when FourPlay was commissioned by the Sydney Opera House Graphic Festival to soundtrack his novella The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains in 2010.

He continued: “We did a tour together, but when we reached Carnegie Hall, we decided we needed something better than me reading a poem as our encore, so we stole some time from soundcheck and rehearsed a song. And then we performed our song on the stage of the Carnegie Hall, and that felt a lot like something special. We started to build a repertoire, and when I was in Australia we would make music together. These are some of the things we’ve made together. It’s been a long fallow winter, the last two and a half years. Here are signs of life.”

British author Neil Gaiman and Australian string quartet FourPlay.

‘Like a gothy yoghurt starter’: how Neil Gaiman and an Australian string quartet fell in love

The English author says crossover project with FourPlay is ‘gloriously strange’ – and unexpectedly popular

N eil Gaiman is well known for his melodic, dreamy voice, which has been put to use on everything from audiobooks to voicing the Simpsons’s cat Snowball. But Neil Gaiman the singer? When he’d occasionally perform live with his ex-wife, the musician Amanda Palmer, his voice was described by the New York Times, perhaps a little unkindly, as “a novelist’s version of singing”.

Next month Gaiman is bringing that voice to the Sydney Opera House , where he’ll be performing with the Australian string quartet FourPlay. How is he feeling about singing on one of the most prestigious stages in the world?

“Terrified. Absolutely terrified,” Gaiman sighs. “I’ve had to learn to trust FourPlay. I’m always reassured by the fact that Lara can actually sing.”

“I’ve been a singer for 30 years and I’m equally terrified, Neil!” interjects Lara Goodridge, one part of FourPlay along with Shenzo Gregorio and brothers Tim and Peter Hollo. “We are all vulnerable on stage together. But I think that’s a really lovely part of it – we’re there to catch each other. It’s exciting to be that alive.”

How a goth English novelist and an Australian string quartet that does Metallica and Radiohead covers became a match made in heaven seems beyond words even for Gaiman, who recalls it as “like going on a blind date where you really hit it off”.

The author and band met in 2010 when FourPlay were commissioned by the Sydney Opera House to soundtrack a live reading of Gaiman’s novella The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains.

Gaiman and FourPlay perform at the Sydney Opera House in 2010.

“A Neil story is a really meaty and fun thing to write to,” Goodridge says. “But having Neil in the room was terrifying …” Gaiman laughs, and Goodridge adds hastily “… for a short period of time, because we worked out that he’s awesome and wonderful. I think that is part of the magic of Neil: the beautiful, collaborative spirit that he has.”

That one show in Sydney led to Gaiman and FourPlay going on tour in the US and the UK, performing in Carnegie Hall and London’s Barbican. “At one point we were on stage in Hobart making weird sounds with David Byrne and Brian Ritchie,” Gaiman says. “I think it was Lara who actually said we had to record some of this, so it didn’t go to waste.”

Their album Signs of Life is the spooky result, a concept album based around a new zodiac contructed by Gaiman, along with a few other curios that snuck in – a haunting poem he wrote and performed about Australia Day back in 2011 ; his and Ben Folds’s song about Joan of Arc, titled The Problem with Saints.

At times, FourPlay’s spidery plucking and mournful bass recalls Bruno Coulais’s score for Coraline , the animated adaptation of Gaiman’s book of the same name: it seems there is something in his writing that can inspire a certain ethereal, grave eeriness.

“It’s like a gothy yoghurt starter,” Gaiman muses. “The gothy yoghurt starter that oozes through. You were going to say something so much more sensible than that, Lara.”

“No I wasn’t,” Goodridge laughs.

Gaiman and Goodridge sing together on Bloody Sunrise, a kind of dark doo-wop track about vampires. “I love that I can say things to Lara [like] ‘This is a lost Petula Clark song, if the follow-up song to Downtown was about a grumpy vampire being unable to bond with people’ and she’s like, ‘Oh right!’ And that’s exactly what comes out of her,” Gaiman says. “It is amazing.”

Signs of Life debuted at No 1 on Billboard’s classical crossover chart and has floated around there ever since. “I’m still baffled, amazed, delighted and sort of gloriously weirded out by that. I figured we’d sell some copies to the FourPlay fans and some copies to the Neil fans. But instead it has become its own thing,” Gaiman says. “There are people buying the album who have no idea who we are, they just like it. It sits there on the charts, slowly becoming The Dark Side of the Moon of classical crossover.”

Though he’s known for his novels, TV shows and comics, Gaiman has written for musicians before: in 2011 he, Palmer, Folds and Damian Kulash of OK Go formed the supergroup 8in8 with the aim of writing and recording eight songs in eight hours (they ended up with six in 12). When he writes for FourPlay, he sometimes comes to them with lyrics or a piece of writing to compose to. At other times, “we will be jamming around a concept and Neil is writing in the corner, our music as his background”, Goodridge says.

“There’s often a point where Peter will say to Shenzo: ‘You know that thing you used to do where you’d make a noise like a car crashing? Can you do that, but add a little bit of seagull to it?’ And somehow Shenzo makes a noise that sounds like a car crashing into a seagull,” Gaiman says. “I feel very privileged to be allowed in.”

The last time Gaiman was in Australia was in March 2020, putting the final touches on Signs of Life as the world was closing down. “That was where my life changed,” he says. “So for me, coming to Sydney and Melbourne and performing with these guys is a giant fuck you to Covid.”

At the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Hamer Hall they will play Signs of Life along with “gloriously strange things nobody’s even heard yet”, as Gaiman puts it.

“There’s one piece based around rude words in a Victorian dictionary that I think is one of the coolest things we’ve ever done,” he says.

“It’s really long because there are a lot of rude words,” Goodridge adds.

“The Victorians really loved euphemisms for sex,” Gaiman says.

Signs of Life is out now. Neil Gaiman and FourPlay are performing at the Sydney Opera House on 15 January and Hamer Hall, Arts Centre Melbourne on 18 January.

Recent tour reviews

I had always heard Coldplay were a fantastic band to see live. They did not disappoint last night at Fedex Field, right in the midst of their joyous and decidedly over-the-top Head Full of Dreams tour.

The show began with an explosion of color and light (including the LED wristbands supplied to every concertgoer) in the titular track on the band's touring album. Then came fan-favorite "Yellow," followed by "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," the ever-popular "The Scientist," and "Birds" (the latter was a bit of a personal disappointment as it replaced the brilliant "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" from recent setlists). This part of the show finished with the anthem "Paradise," featuring an incredible remix outro.

Next the show slowed down for an intimate trio of songs (most of us actually took a seat). This included one of the better tracks from the sub-par "Ghost Stories", "Magic."

Soon, however, things picked up with the timeless piano strokes of "Clocks," themed to a magical red light show. Next came the lighthearted "Charlie Brown." Before it began, lead singer Chris Martin asked everyone to put away their phones and simply enjoy the show. This was followed by the radio hit "Hymn for the Weekend," a candlelit (okay...Iphone flashlight lit) "Fix You," and "Viva la Vida." This last one was remarkable, as nearly the entire stadium knew the lyrics and sang along to the triumphant "Oh-oh-ohhhh" chant. The groovy "Adventure of a Lifetime" finished off this section, featuring Chris gettin' down with the audience, asking everyone to "Get low!"

Then came the highlight of the night for me: an acoustic quad of older (*cough* better *cough*) Coldplay songs which were as intimate as they were nostalgic. The lovely riffs of "In my Place" started off the set. "Don't Panic" was sung by drummer Will Champion; it's one of my favorites. But it couldn't top what was (for me) the best song of the night: "Trouble." Somber but beautiful in its own way, "Trouble" is a rare find in the setlists of today's Coldplay and was absolutely fantastic. Finally came another rare gem: "Green Eyes," which was somewhat marred by Chris's well-intentioned attempt at giving the local Redskins some luck (HA! what folly) by changing the lyrics.

The finale of the show was the hopeful and popular trio of "Something Just like This," "A Sky Full of Stars," and "Up and Up." This last track was played against the backdrop of the magical and visually stunning music video for the song.

And if there were two adjectives to sum up the show as a whole, they would be just that: magical and visually stunning. Thanks for an awesome show, Coldplay!

First of all I need to just say wow! Wow! Yesterday I experienced one of the greatest nights of my life. Yesterday I really did feel like I was part of something special, something so big and beautiful. The love, the happiness and the excaitment people were feeling last night were something you can't put words on. We stood in the rain for so many hours, we sat in a que and then we stood in the rain again.. but let me just say that when Coldplay came on stage they put on the best god damn show ever. You could really feel their thankfulness during the show. They promised us (in Chris Martins own words) "The best fucking show ever" and let me tell you it was! During the night I got to experience people from different countries dancing and singing along together, I got to experience that moment when Chris decided to write a new song about Sweden and Gothenburg! The night was amazing in so many ways. And just as he said during the night, that he believes when people are working together and last night everybody in that arena stood together. We celebrated the music, the evening and most of all we celebrated the love. Because in the end of the day Love is what matters and it will always win.

Yesterday was beautiful, just pure beautiful!

A Coldplay concert is a real face to face experience for a someone who love their songs. It may not be an intimate experience but considering the legions of fans that they have only a concert can accommodate everyone who are waiting all their lives for a chance to hear them live. and they never disappoint. A total performance complete with lasers and light and firework BUT without much fanfare, just them singing & playing their hearts OUT song after song alone or in harmony with the fans some crying, most gleefully dancing to their upbeat song or swaying OR slow dancing to slow Fix You or Yellow and probably thinking of someone they "cannot replace". Chris Martin is an awesome guy and so are the rest of the band. May their personal lives be as awesome as their professional lives, they deserve that too. as to Singapore, it may not be as engaging as it would be in the Philippines but hey, no one can complain; i had the best time celebrating my birthday in one of the best stadium this side of town with around 50K Coldpay fans celebrating with me :) :). Long live Coldplay, may you continue to bring joy to you fans worldwide. Looking forward to another Coldplay concert experience in the future.
