Marketing, pr, content strategy, careers, 15 steps to define, establish and promote your expertise, by stephen dupont, apr.

Do you desire to be recognized as an expert in your field?

To be onstage at a conference speaking alongside other industry experts?

To be sought out by the news media for expert opinion about a news story?

To be honored by your peers for your professionalism, leadership and expert knowledge of your industry?

To be sought out by clients or executive recruiters because of your expertise?

Being recognized as an expert authority can bring many advantages, from the respect of your colleagues, peers and clients, to attracting more business (consulting arrangements, speaking opportunities, book deals, etc.) for yourself or your organization.

What many don’t realize is it’s the rare person who becomes instantly recognized as an expert. Based on my 25 years of experience in public relations, marketing and branding, the process actually involves a number of steps taken over weeks, months and even years. And, even after someone is recognized as a leading expert, that reputation must continuously be maintained through ongoing investments in personal brand building for an expert authority to remain relevant in our fast-changing business world.

In other words, expertise is something that is cultivated and nurtured over time between a person or organization and an audience or fanbase (including customers, employees and other stakeholders).

The process begins with intention – the decision to focus on a specific niche or market by placing one’s talents, skills and insight into the service of that specific niche. This isn’t just a matter of picking a specific market and saying “I’m going to be an expert at this.” What’s it’s actually about is finding your “why” — that axis between what you’re really good at and your passion. We’ve often heard people say, “I can only sell what I believe in.” So, what do you believe in yourself? Because the process of establishing yourself as an expert starts in believing you are so good at something that others will want the expertise that you have to better themselves or their organization.

your journey our expertise

This applies to just about any profession – lawyers, doctors, plumbers, janitors, clergy, accountants, landscapers, truck drivers, or venture capitalists. Where people hire others based on their knowledge and insight, there are experts. And you could be one of them.

Here are 15 steps on how to define, establish and promote your own expertise or the expertise of another person, such as a business leader within an organization for whom you work or a client:

What is your expertise?

1.) Identify your professional expertise/specialty  – If you went to school to study a specific field of interest (e.g., business management, chemistry, neuroscience) and/or have worked within a specific profession for a number of years, you could say that you’re an expert in that field. However, whether you’re an electrician or a lawyer, within most professions, there are areas of specialties that further define expertise. In the world of communications, for example, you may be good at many things, but what you might be exceptional at corporate communications (e.g., working directly with the C-suite). As a roofer, you may be good at installing many types of roofs, but you stand out as an installer of flat roofs. So, start here: What are the three to five specialties within your profession at which you excel? Of these, are you more knowledgeable about a specific area or practice than your peers?

your journey our expertise

2.) Identify your industry expertise – In my career, I’ve worked with clients representing at least a dozen different industries, from financial services and transportation to packaged consumer goods and software automation, however the majority of my clients have been focused in just a handful of industries. Some of my peers have worked almost their entire careers in just one industry, such as health care or financial services. What about for you? Is there a specific industry where you have a great deal of experience? Also, are you an expert in working with organizations of specific sizes (small businesses, mid-sized companies, Fortune 500 companies)?  For example, my neighbor, who is a CPA by training, is an expert controller for small- and medium-sized trucking companies.

3.) Identify your geographic market – Expertise can transcend geographic markets. For example, if you’re a corporate lawyer who is an expert in pre-IPO digital ventures, that’s an expertise that can be taken just about anywhere in the world. However, you may choose to be an expert serving a specific area, such as my friend, J.C., who is an expert in HVAC systems serving customers along the Outer Banks islands of North Carolina. Because J.C. is recognized as the go-to guy, he does very little if any advertising – all of his work comes through word-of-mouth, and it’s allowed him to own a nice home alongside that of a Boston neurosurgeon who comes down for just a few weeks every year. Or, you may live and work in a smaller market, such as Duluth, Minnesota, and after realizing that there are only so many healthcare institutions in your city/region to support your healthcare IT practice, you look to expand your expertise to other nearby markets in Wisconsin and North Dakota. The key here is to identify a potential base of customers that will allow you to make a living. Keep in mind, some professions have limitations, such as the requirement of a license to practice in a specific state.

4.) Identify your experiential  expertise — Not all expertise is to be gained by following the traditional script of going to college and establishing a white-collar career. Look at Bill Sandy, owner of Sandy’s Blackhawk Island , who has established himself as one of the preeminent experts on muskie fishing in the U.S. and Canada, or   Sage Cattabriga-Alosa , one of the world’s most well-known extreme skiers. In the book,  The Third Door , author Alex Banayan explains, through face-to-face interviews with well-known experts and business leaders such as Bill Gates, Qi Lu, Lady Gaga, Quincy Jones, and Jane Goodall, that many of the most successful people we know did not follow a traditional path to success. So, you may be a very good CPA or a really great nurse, but maybe you should look beyond that to experiences such as flying drones, hiking up Colorado’s 14 mountains topping 14,000 feet, or collecting 2,000 comic books as an expertise that can be shared with others.

5.) Claiming your expertise – Here’s the one thing about expertise that you should know – it’s not determined by how many years you’ve worked in a specific profession or an industry. Rather, it’s based on how many miles you’ve traveled and how many different roads you’ve taken in the journey. So yes, a 23-year-old can be considered an expert on a particular subject (such as social media) based on his or her experiences and can be taken as seriously as a 50-year-old who has worked in that particular area for the last 25 years. Certainly we have seen over the past 15 years with the rise of various blogs, people who have become experts over time, even though they publicly stated when they started their blog that they knew little to nothing about their subject (e.g., weight loss, running, digital photography, cooking, etc.). Part of claiming your expertise is earning the respect you deserve. That comes when not just your followers adore you, but when your peers come to respect you as well. Often times, that’s tested in public when giving a talk, sitting on a panel discussion, or during a live interview with a media outlet – it becomes clear whether you know what you’re talking about or not.

6.) Sharing your expertise – Another aspect of being respected as an expert is your openness to sharing your knowledge and wisdom. There are many people whom we would consider experts, but who are not, because they withhold their knowledge and/or refuse to collaborate with others. The whole point of seeking to position yourself as an expert is your willingness to be a leader in your field, and that means leading by bringing others together to continue advancing the field’s pool of knowledge. In other words, experts give. They create value within their field of expertise by seeking others (not just new customers) to share their wisdom and insights. They think not just about today, but of the legacy they want to leave for the next generation.

Establish Your Expertise

7.) Build social credibility – To be recognized as an expert, you need to have social credibility (or social proof) – those authoritative factors or elements linked to your personal brand that are recognized by your peers, customers and other influencers. This may vary based on your profession or field of expertise. For a corporate attorney, social cred may be earned by representing blue chip clients, or having litigated a high profile case. For other professions, it might be obtaining an MBA or a Ph.D. from a well-known school such as Harvard, Cambridge or McGill, or having publishing an article or research paper based on original research conducted by you in a peer-reviewed journal. For advertising professionals, it might be winning a major advertising award for an ad campaign. For political advisors, it often requires working on a major political campaign. Other professionals, such as an HVAC professional I know, built his social cred with HVAC training videos on YouTube. A financial counselor built her social cred by writing a book and appearing on a local radio program taking questions from listeners. Look closely at how other experts in your field obtained the social cred they needed to speak as an authority figure.

your journey our expertise

8.) Identify other experts in your field or market – Within the spectrum of experts will be those who are well known, those who are not and many in-between. Identify where you stand among existing experts and start to cultivate relationships with them. While you may compete with some of these people for customers or in thought leadership (marketplace acceptance of ideas and concepts), the reality is that you and other experts in your field all have something in common — the desire to lift your profession or industry up. And that comes through collaboration, the sharing of information, and the setting of new standards.

9.) Understand what’s next – The top experts in your field don’t just think of today, they’re thinking of tomorrow, or possibly, way into the future. They apply a futurist mindset to their knowledge. They search for patterns and trends that will have far-reaching impact on future developments on their area of expertise. They push the edges of curiosity, and they’re continuous learners. For example, the expert intellectual property attorney may be curious enough to wonder about the legalities of an invention developed by an artificial intelligence-powered robot sometime in the future, or whether the intellectual property laws of the U.S. apply to an invention developed by an American living on the Moon or Mars.

10.) Build a platform – With so many experts out there, you need to distinguish yourself from the pack. How? By developing a unique point-of-view, or platform, from which to express your expertise. Take a close look at your industry or profession. What do you see that no one else sees? Notice any patterns? What would you change if you had the power, influence and resources? Where does the danger lurk? Should the alarms be sounded? Take some time to literally write out your views and compare them to what other experts in your field are saying. If you need to, do your own research to validate your thinking and your unique approach to your field.

11.) Take on leadership roles — Experts take on leadership roles within their profession, their industry and their communities. They serve as advocates for their industry, their community or the causes they believe in. They serve on boards, they participate on committees, and they mentor. It’s in leading that they build personal relationships that allow them to share their expertise and collaborate with their peers.

Promote Your Expertise

12.) Express your thinking – After you’ve developed your unique points of view (POVs), begin expressing those POVs with your existing customers, potential customers and your peers. One of the easiest places to start doing this is through LinkedIn, which allows users to publish articles through LinkedIn Pulse. Also consider: publishing articles on your company’s blog or on Medium , or posting shorter messages on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. At some point, you may want to create your own blog to share your ideas and expertise, seek opportunities to speak at industry meetings and conferences, and offer webinars or seminars, which allow you to share your expertise.

Note: Don’t confuse being recognized as an expert with the modern day definition of being an influencer (someone with a large social media following). You can be a highly sought-after expert without a large social media following.

13.) Write a book  – Many experts write and publish books to cement their expertise (their thinking or special point of view) while building out their marketing platform. Being an author and having a book to your credit is still perceived as a strong sign of social credibility. A book allows you to claim your expertise while creating a foundation of content that can be turned into other types of content (videos, articles, white papers), which can be used to attract new fans. In addition, a book offers an opportunity to generate editorial coverage, speaking engagements, and social media posts.

14.) Seek third-party editorial coverage – In his book, Endless Referrals , author and sales expert Bob Burg notes, “all things being equal, people do business with those they know, like and trust.” Let’s pay attention to that first word — “know.” If people don’t know about you and your expertise, then they’ll never come to like and trust you, and ultimately do business with you. That’s why experts need to put themselves out there and share their expertise. One of the most proven ways of doing this is making yourself available to media outlets, including bloggers, who are seeking expert sources for information, insights and informed opinion for the stories they share with their audiences. This means developing relationships with reporters, editors and bloggers and making yourself available for interviews or writing articles for a magazine or a blog.

15.) Build a community – As you become known, liked and trusted for your expertise, you will build your own community of followers, with whom you can communicate directly through “owned” media (a blog, social media pages, or an e-newsletter whose content you control).  To accelerate this process, focus your efforts on building an opt-in email list of people who have an interest in receiving information and insights directly from you (vs. through a third party). If you’re not sure how to start, begin by creating a short list of people with whom you have business relationships and start by sharing articles or videos created by yourself that you believe can add value to their lives. Eventually, this list may grow into a formal, opt-in email list that you can use for a daily, weekly or monthly e-newsletter or alerts (e.g., corporate attorney sends alerts to people on her email list about about new SEC regulations). Building a blog also is an efficient way to stay in touch with your growing fanbase by sharing free content about important issues and topics.

Your Expertise = Your Personal Brand

Building your expertise is the first step in a longer journey involving the building of your personal brand . It’s the foundation of your personal brand – the bricks, so to speak – that will help you attract and retain a growing following of people who trust you for your thinking and wisdom, and who are open to sharing that thinking with their network. After all, you become known by the company you keep and the ideas you share.

Make The Leap

How to position yourself as an expert: 10 pro tips.

So you want to become an expert – but how can you stand out and become the go-to person in your industry?

In the competitive world of digital creators, you need to find a way to catch the attention of the people who matter. That might be your customers, media outlets, potential brand partners or more.

To make your business a success, you need to learn how to come across as an expert to the people who can make all the difference to your business. That means building your personal brand to become an authority figure in your industry through careful positioning, consistency and a lot of confidence.

To tackle the question of how to position yourself as an expert, we learned from experts, Maya Elious and Tonya Rapley at a previous Think In Color conference to get the inside track on the topic.

Read on to find out how to come across as an expert in your chosen field, so you can win trust and business in no time at all.

What does it mean to position yourself as an expert?

Think of a topic you’re interested in. Whether it’s yoga, investing, DIY or anything else, is there someone you look up to as an authority on that topic?

Chances are, there will be a relatively small number of people who you follow to get information. These are the experts you trust to tell you what you need to know about the field you’re interested in.

Now think about what makes you gravitate towards these people. What makes you trust them? What about them convinced you they were experts?

First up, they have probably shown you that they know a lot about their chosen field.

There’s no getting around the fact that becoming an expert is hard work. An expert will know their subject inside out and will be able to fluently explain and present information or ideas that reflect this knowledge.

It’s their authority and knowledge about a subject that makes their audience – including you – confident enough to invest time and money into learning from them.

Adaptability

A true expert will be up to date and responsive to current trends and discussions in their industry, meaning you’ll continually return to them to get their perspective on new challenges or opportunities.

For example, what does a social media expert specializing in Instagram make of the latest algorithm update? How does a leading music production expert rate that exciting new recording software? How can they help you do the things you’re interested in even better?

The experts keep their community engaged, even in a rapidly evolving and changing landscape. People go to them for guidance when things start to shift because they have confidence that they know what they’re talking about.

How did you first get introduced to that expert? It’s likely that they came onto your radar because other people were using them as experts first – they have the most viewed videos on YouTube or they rank no. 1 on Google for an important question related to the topic, or maybe a friend recommended them.

Experts are only experts if other people believe they are. In the world of experts and authority figures, their audience matters.

Becoming an expert

People looking to educate themselves, develop their skills or improve their lives through online courses will be faced with a wide range of options. That means that in order to find success as an educator, coach or course creator, you need to learn how to position yourself as an expert.

If you can master this combination of authority, adaptability and audience trust, you can be seen as an expert in your field and draw people to your brand to find out the answers they need to know on the topics they care about.

Want to learn how to come across as an expert? Here are Tonya and May’s 10 top tips.

10 tips for how to come across as an expert

Consistency is key.

In the words of leading personal brand strategist Maya Elious , consistency means “building visibility”.

Maya first started out designing MySpace pages for aspiring models in college, before moving seamlessly into web and graphic design and then to content and brand messaging. She argues that consistency was one of the main things that got her to where she is now and helped her monetize her expertise .

“The people that come to me now trust me because I kept going,” Maya says, “not because of what I do or because I say I’m the best, but because I kept showing up for myself.”

Whether you’re chatting to clients, designing a new course or putting out a post on social media, the consistency of your communication style and the content you put out can help you position yourself as an expert among your audience.

Tonya Rapley, personal finance entrepreneur and creator of the award-winning money management site My Fab Finance , recommends setting up business social media accounts as one of the first steps to positioning yourself as an expert.

If you have separate profiles for your business, you can be confident that it says exactly what you want it to say. Keeping a business-based profile that’s solely focused on your topic of expertise not only ensures that your audience gets consistent and useful information – it also helps to optimize your online presence.

If you want to know how to come across as an expert, aim to create a consistent tone of communication across your website, blog and social media posts. At the same time, stay on topic with your business accounts and consider making a separate account or page for unrelated or personal content.

Be consistent and people will start coming back to you to hear what you have to say.

You can know all there is to know about a topic – which is awesome in its own right – but unless you’re communicating your knowledge to others, you’ll never be able to build a reputation as an expert.

Online forums, social media and publications are all buzzing with conversations about any and every topic under the sun. The more you can confidently dive in and make useful, valuable contributions to relevant discussions, the more you’ll be able to build a following for your brand.

The secret to how to come across as an expert is to be visible to the people who matter – including your audience, other authority figures and organizations that matter in your industry.

Tonya Rapley recommends using speaking engagements to be more visible in your niche and she has some great tips to help you land them:

  • Reach out to organizers and ask if they’re taking submissions for speakers
  • Connect with organizers on LinkedIn and send them a message
  • Go to other conferences that organizers might be attending to network
  • Consider volunteering your time for a relevant cause
  • Contact online and print publications to contribute knowledge or ideas

When you’re first starting out with your business and trying to figure out how to position yourself as an expert, you need to spend time building up your network to create connections and increase the visibility of yourself and your brand.

Start broad, then ‘niche down’

You may have heard of the phrase ‘niche down’ – nowhere is it more relevant than in the quest for how to position yourself as an expert.

Niching down is about taking the time to explore your industry and figure out exactly where you can offer your expertise.

Maya and Tonya both highlight the importance of not rushing into a niche just because you think you need one. Instead, it’s worth taking the time to find your niche by figuring out where your expertise lies, what your passions are, where there is the most demand and what your audience wants to hear about.

Tonya’s company, My Fab Finance, started out as My Fab Fico and was solely about achieving a better credit score. “But as time went on,” she explains, “I wanted to talk about things other than credit. I didn’t want to just be ‘the credit person’ because I was learning about budgets. I was learning about debt elimination. I was learning about so many other things and I felt boxed in with the name ‘My Fab Fico’ and felt limited talking just about credit and credit scores.”

Once Tonya changed the name of her brand and expanded her focus, it enabled her to niche down into the broader world of finance and become ‘the finance person’ instead!

By contrast, Maya didn’t rush to zone in on a particular specialty when establishing herself as a branding expert. She explains the value of taking the time to figure out where and how to niche down in her entrepreneurial journey:

“The reason I was able to niche down and figure out what I was excellent in […] was because I started off broad, you know – just like: ‘oh, brand designer, brand expert.’ And I kept going and I kept going and I saw the type of people I liked working with. I saw the results.”

When you’re trying to figure out how to become one of the best in your industry, you have to be okay with starting out and not knowing the answer yet.

The takeaways?

  • Allow your brand identity to be broad enough for future expansion
  • Don’t be afraid to pivot your brand or shift to a new specialty if there’s demand
  • Take the time to figure out where your strengths are and who your most engaged audience is

Finding a niche is important to help you stand out from the crowd but if you’re learning how to come across as an expert, it’s a good idea to leave space to change your niche or narrow your focus over time. You can’t predict the future so don’t paint yourself into a corner right away.

Keep studying and stay informed

The world is constantly changing. Experts aren’t just stores of knowledge – they’re highly adaptable people who can apply their existing knowledge and skills to new developments and shifting environments.

“Everything is evolving,” says Tonya. “Content creation is evolving. The way we deliver content is evolving. Laws are constantly changing. Laws are constantly evolving. Current events are happening.”

Things that are relevant to your industry are constantly cropping up, along with new competitors and new interests for your customers.

If you want to come across as an expert, you need to keep studying so you know what’s new, what’s relevant, and what’s important to your audience.

This makes sure you’re not just positioned as a go-to person, but you remain the go-to person in your industry. After all, how to position yourself as an expert also includes how to stay positioned as an expert long-term.

By reacting and responding to current developments and discussions, you can reassure your audience that your expertise is still relevant. Show potential clients that you’re offering not just your course and your knowledge, but an overall mindset and method for engaging with new obstacles and situations.

Here are Tonya and Maya’s tips to stay on top of new trends and important developments:

  • Set aside some time every week to explore new developments in your chosen topic
  • Try subscribing to newsletters or journals on the subject and read a lot
  • Communicate your own views and responses via a regular blog, newsletter or social media

If you want to know how to come across as an expert, you need to be willing to keep studying and engaging with your chosen topic to show your audience that you really do know what you’re talking about – especially when current events disrupt your industry.

Stay concise, stay relevant

There are fewer things more frustrating than Googling a question and finding out the responses don’t come anywhere close to answering it! If you want to come across as an expert in your chosen field, you need to identify what questions people are asking and then answer them directly and confidently.

Though it can be tempting to go beyond the simple answer to demonstrate your breadth of knowledge on the topic, it’s not what people want. They want bitesize, clear and informative responses that tell them exactly what they need to know.

This applies to your website, newsletter, social media and community space – if someone asks a question, answer it simply and concisely in a way that anyone can understand.

As well as saving both you and your audience time, this strategy shows that you are confident in your abilities and don’t need to prove anything with big fancy words. It also shows that you can listen to others and help them out when they need it!

Tonya explains this is also the secret to how to come across as an expert: “You need to learn how to distill what you want to be known for down into sound bites.”

“You don’t want people to get lost in a whole bunch of words. You want them to be able to say, “this is what she’s known for and she communicated it.”

Whether you’re outlining a course objective, weighing in on a topic for a publication or updating your social media profile, keep it sharp and to the point to create space for your knowledge and expertise to shine through.

  • Think carefully about the question you’re trying to answer or the point you’re trying to make.
  • Edit your content to make sure it’s clear and straightforward
  • Remember to keep things snackable and shareable

In the digital age, the secret for how to come across as an expert is to make your words and your expertise easy to understand and easy to share with others – it’s as simple as that!

Value your expertise and others will too

When you’re first getting your brand off the ground, it can be tempting to try and compete with existing brands on pricing. If you can just secure some clients at a discounted price, surely you can build your profile from there right?

If you’re doing this to try and position yourself as an expert, it’s rarely a good idea.

Why? If people think you don’t value your own expertise, they’re less likely to believe in what you’re offering them.

This is something that’s hugely important for digital creators.

As Maya explains: “When it comes to your pricing, think about what they are willing to pay to get this transformation in their life – in their love life, in their business, in their health, in their wealth. That’s what you want to think about.”

Focus on the person that you’re going to help and the outcome you can get for them – how their life will be changed if they make the investment. That’s what should guide your pricing structure.

You’ve put a huge amount of time, energy and resources into building your personal brand . Don’t undervalue your expertise.

If you want to know how to come across as an expert, this is a crucial tip to remember.

Avoid the hard sell

If there’s one consistent red flag for potential customers, it’s when a self-styled expert tries to do a hard sell of their services or expertise.

Marketing is about making people aware of you, including what you can offer them and how they can learn about a topic for themselves. Selling is about trying to convince someone to buy something from you.

Direct selling to people who haven’t yet made their interest clear is one of the quickest ways you can lose both a potential sale and your reputation as an expert.

To come across as an expert in your industry, you need to radiate calm confidence, not desperation or dependency. Focus on building your profile and establishing your expertise rather than going in for the sale. If you can build up your reputation as an expert in your field, you can generate leads naturally.

If you want to come across as an expert, let people come to you!

Be ready and available – and stick to the stuff you know

When you’re positioning yourself as a go-to person in your industry, there may be times when you’ll get a call saying “Hey, we have a segment coming up and we’re looking for an expert to speak about it tomorrow.”

To come across as an expert to your audience, you need to be so familiar with your content that you could talk about it with 10 minutes notice.

The more you can share your unique expertise and knowledge, the more potential interest from publications and potential customers will start to build. If all goes well, this will snowball into a reliable stream of interest that generates real revenue for your business.

Be aware that as your profile grows, people will assume that since you’re an expert on one thing, you’ll also be an expert on something that’s slightly related. For example, you know about green energy so you’ll be able to talk about electric cars.

To come across as an expert and avoid risking the reputation you’ve built, you need to be prepared to be upfront about things that are beyond your knowledge or skill set. If you don’t know a topic inside out, it’s best not to comment on it. This way you can ensure that your reputation as a reliable source of expertise stays firmly intact – and you can gain more opportunities down the line instead.

Tonya and Maya’s top tips for speaking as an expert:

  • Be familiar and comfortable with your chosen topic
  • Be ready to talk about it at short notice
  • Know when to turn down opportunities that are beyond your area of expertise

When you want to become an expert in a topic, it can be tempting to say yes to any and every opportunity that comes your way. But the secret to how to position yourself as an expert in your industry is to know what to talk about, when to talk about it – and when to say no.

Optimize your online presence

When people are looking for an expert to speak on their particular topic, one of the first places they go is Google. They will search for certain terms to find a relevant expert.

The good news is, you don’t need to be a marketing expert to pick up a few basic search engine optimization (SEO) principles that can drive more traffic to your website or social media account. Using consistent and relevant search terms and keywords will help to make sure you are easy to find online.

When you’re first starting out, it will be very hard to rank in search engines for high traffic keywords such as ‘motivational speaker’ or ‘career coach’. Instead, you need to find longer keywords that are more niche. These will have less competition and it will be easier to get your content on the first page of any search.

In the process of learning how to come across as an expert, you’ll need to take a look at your website and your existing content. Is it telling people what you do and where your area of expertise lies?

It all comes back to making sure you are getting your voice and your name out there. Take some time to research SEO principles and apply them in your website content and social media posts – or enlist the help of an SEO expert to do it for you.

Be confident, calm and approachable

When you think of the experts you look up to, how do they project themselves? If their expertise was questioned or doubted, how would they respond?

The process of how to come across as an expert is as much about your behavior as it is about your social media profile or your content.

Wherever possible, think about how you project yourself to your audience.

Aim to keep a collected, calm and confident demeanor even when you come up against unexpected hurdles or difficult clients or questions. Preparation and planning can help here – if you have a clear plan for your speech, event or lesson, you can present it with confidence even when things go wrong.

The same principle goes for Q&A sessions – practice with friends and family to learn how to handle tough questions and answer them carefully and expertly to cement your status as an expert.

Trust is crucial. So are first impressions. Make sure you’re presenting yourself like an expert to be able to come across like one.

Ready to become an expert?

Tonya and Maya’s tips are ideal to help you learn how to come across as an expert and how to position yourself as an expert in your chosen industry or niche. It takes time to build up your reputation but with consistency, content and confidence, you can become known as an expert.

The Path to Expertise: What It Takes to Be Considered an Expert

  • May 31, 2023

In today’s knowledge-driven world, expertise holds significant value. Whether you’re seeking professional recognition, aiming to establish yourself as a thought leader, or looking to gain a competitive edge in your industry, being considered an expert can open doors to new opportunities and elevate your business. However, true expertise is not acquired overnight. It requires dedication, continuous learning, and a commitment to mastery.

In fact, studies report it takes 10,000 hours in any one area to truly become an expert!

Think about it like this …

If you only work on something 1 hour per day, it will take you 26 years to master that subject! 2 hrs per day = 13.6 years 3 hrs per day = 9 years 4 hrs per day = 7 years 8 hrs per day = 3.5 years

So… are you really an expert?

In this article, we will explore the key elements that define an expert and the path one must take to attain such a status.

1) Deep Knowledge and Experience:

At the core of expertise lies a profound understanding of a specific subject matter. Experts possess a deep knowledge base that goes beyond surface-level understanding. They invest countless hours in research, study, and hands-on experience to master their chosen field. By continuously expanding their knowledge, staying abreast of industry trends, and honing their skills, experts develop a level of expertise that sets them apart from their peers.

2. Continuous Learning and Growth:

One common trait among experts is their unquenchable thirst for knowledge. They understand that learning is a lifelong journey and that staying ahead requires constant adaptation and growth. Experts are committed to staying current in their field, attending conferences, workshops, and seminars, and engaging in ongoing professional development activities. They actively seek out opportunities to expand their expertise and refine their skills, ensuring they remain at the forefront of their industry.

3) Demonstrated Track Record of Success:

Being considered an expert goes beyond theoretical knowledge. It is validated by a proven track record of success in applying that knowledge. Experts have a history of achieving notable results and delivering value in their field. They have practical experience and can point to tangible outcomes that showcase their expertise. Whether it’s through a portfolio of successful projects, client testimonials, or recognition from industry peers, experts have evidence that demonstrates their ability to make a real impact.

4) Thought Leadership and Influence:

Experts are not just knowledgeable; they are also influential. They possess the ability to shape opinions, drive conversations, and inspire others. They share their expertise through thought leadership platforms such as speaking engagements, published articles, blogs, podcasts, or social media. By sharing insights, providing guidance, and contributing to the advancement of their field, experts establish themselves as trusted authorities and earn the respect and recognition of their peers and the wider community.

5) Commitment to Excellence and Ethical Standards:

True experts hold themselves to the highest standards of excellence and ethics. They prioritize quality and continually strive for perfection in their work. Experts are reliable, consistent, and accountable for the advice and services they provide. They maintain integrity, transparency, and a strong code of ethics, ensuring that their expertise is grounded in trustworthiness and professionalism.

Becoming an expert is a journey that requires time, effort, and dedication. It is a continuous pursuit of knowledge, experience, and growth. By cultivating a deep understanding of your field, committing to lifelong learning, demonstrating a track record of success, and actively contributing to thought leadership, you can position yourself as an expert.

However, expertise is not just about knowledge; it is also about integrity, influence, and a commitment to excellence.

“What are your career aspirations?”

This has to be one of the most commonly asked questions in interviews besides the standard questions about the candidate’s professional background, skills, and experience.

"Career aspirations" refer to an individual's long-term professional goals and ambitions, encompassing the desired achievements and personal growth they seek throughout their journey.

Interviewers inquire about your professional aspirations to gain insights into your long-term motivations, passion, and alignment with the company's vision, helping them assess if your goals and the organization's objectives are in sync.

The key to providing meaningful answers is to be genuine and demonstrate a clear connection between your career aspirations and the value you can bring to the organization. Tailor your responses to the specific job and company, and let your passion for personal and professional growth shine through.

7 examples of answers about career aspirations

When asked about your career aspirations, a meaningful answer that goes beyond personal growth will help you differentiate yourself from other interviewees. Here are seven meaningful answers that can make a lasting impression on interviewers:

1. Pursuing continuous learning and skill development

Example: "My career aspirations are centered around constant growth and skill enhancement. I am committed to staying updated with the latest trends and technologies in the industry. In the coming year, I plan to pursue specialized certifications and attend industry conferences to learn from experts . By continuously improving my skills, I aim to bring innovative strategies to the table and contribute to the company's success in reaching new audiences."

While the above example is a generalized statement on continuous learning , you can improve it by naming specific skills and certifications that you mean to acquire.

2. Making a positive impact on society and the environment

Example: "Beyond personal career goals, I am passionate about creating a positive impact on society and the environment through my work. I aspire to work for a company with a strong commitment to sustainability. I envision aligning my career with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and actively participating in corporate social responsibility initiatives. I find immense fulfillment in contributing to a greener and more sustainable future, and I believe that my dedication to these causes will resonate with the organization's values and mission."

The above answer will help you showcase your interest in contributing to a larger purpose by making a difference in the world. Make it your own by discussing any volunteer work you are involved in to emphasize your commitment to meaningful impact.

3. Becoming a thought leader and influencer in the industry

Example: "My ultimate career aspiration is to become a thought leader and influencer in my field. I plan to publish research papers, contribute to open-source projects, and participate in conferences to share my knowledge. Additionally, I aspire to become an active member of industry forums and engage in public speaking opportunities to promote advancements in the industry. By becoming a recognized authority, I can position the company as a leader in our space."

Turn the above example into a highly specific answer by mentioning your area of expertise and your topic of research. Give examples of other thought leaders in your industry and how they helped establish their organizations as leaders in their space.

4. Embracing leadership opportunities

Example: "As a seasoned manager, my career aspiration is to take on more significant leadership roles and contribute to the growth of the organization's talent. I envision leading cross-functional teams, fostering a collaborative work culture, and mentoring emerging managers . A company can grow and succeed faster when the more experienced members of the team empower and guide others."

Communicate your interest in taking on leadership roles and guiding others to success. Make the above example your own by discussing your leadership style and how you plan to inspire and motivate team members.

5. Driving innovation and advancement within the company

Example: "Innovation drives me, and I am passionate about leveraging technology to push the boundaries of what's possible. My career aspiration is to lead the research and development team, where I can spearhead new product ideas and create groundbreaking solutions. I envision fostering an innovation-focused culture within the organization, where employees are encouraged to experiment and think outside the box. By introducing disruptive products to the market, we can elevate the company's position and stay ahead of the competition."

To be more specific with the answer, talk about your ideas for improving processes or developing new products or services for the company.

6. Cultivating a diverse and inclusive work environment

Example: "My biggest career aspiration revolves around creating an inclusive and diverse work environment. I envision implementing diversity training programs, establishing mentorship opportunities for underrepresented groups, and ensuring that all employees feel valued and respected. By fostering a workplace that celebrates differences, we can boost employee morale, creativity, and ultimately contribute to the company's overall success."

In your answer, discuss strategies for promoting inclusivity and building a diverse team. Emphasize the positive impact of diversity on organizational performance and innovation.

7. Becoming a mentor and guiding others to success

Example: "One of my most significant career aspirations is to take on a mentorship role within the organization. Throughout my career journey, I have benefited greatly from the guidance and support of mentors who have helped me develop both professionally and personally. I aspire to pay it forward by becoming a mentor to junior colleagues and assisting them in their career growth. By sharing my knowledge, experiences, and lessons learned, I hope to inspire and empower others to reach their full potential and contribute to a more dynamic and skilled workforce within the company."

Mentorship can have a profound impact on individual development and team cohesion. By showcasing your willingness to mentor and uplift others, you demonstrate not only a commitment to your own growth but also a dedication to fostering a supportive and collaborative work culture within the organization.

How to answer questions on career aspirations during an interview

When answering the question about career aspirations, demonstrate your alignment with the company's values and showcase your enthusiasm for personal and organizational growth. To ace this critical aspect of the interview, consider the following tips:

Read about the company’s vision and mission, and the job role

When asked about your career aspirations, connect your goals with the company's mission. Search the company's website and annual reports to understand their core values and long-term objectives. Read the job description carefully, because it will also have details about how the role you are interviewing for contributes to the overall picture.

You will be able to give better answers if you know what the company stands for and how you will potentially fit in and add value. For instance, instead of saying, "I want to improve my leadership skills," say, "I aspire to become a leader who can drive the organization towards achieving its mission of sustainable environmental practices."

Speak with a “We” mindset

Avoid phrases that focus solely on personal gain. Most employers look for a team-oriented and collaborative mindset in their employees. By focusing on how you can contribute to the collective success of the organization and its goals, you will show the interviewers that you are a team player.

Instead of saying, "I want to be making $150,000 in two years," say that "I aim to contribute to the success of the team by utilizing my skills to achieve higher growth."

Be specific and realistic about your goals

Instead of providing vague statements like, "I want to be successful," be specific about your aspirations, such as "I aspire to take on a managerial role within the next three years, leading cross-functional teams and driving innovative projects."

Being specific and realistic about your goals during an interview shows that you have a clear understanding of your career path and have thoughtfully considered your aspirations. It also indicates that you are pragmatic and grounded, making you a more credible candidate who can set achievable targets and work diligently towards them, increasing your chances of being seen as a reliable and valuable asset to the organization.

Show enthusiasm and passion for your career path

Demonstrate your excitement for your chosen career path by saying, "I am genuinely passionate about (let’s say) marketing, and I look forward to creating impactful campaigns that can connect with customers on a deeper level and drive brand loyalty."

Employers value candidates who are enthusiastic about their work as they are more likely to be motivated, proactive, and willing to go the extra mile to excel in their role.

Common pitfalls to avoid when answering questions about career aspirations

By effectively communicating your career aspirations during an interview, you can leave a lasting impression on potential employers. However, candidates should steer clear of the following two common pitfalls:

1. Using cliches and vague responses

Using cliches and providing vague responses can make your answer sound insincere and lacking in authenticity. Vague statements like "I want to make a difference" or "I want to be successful" don't provide meaningful insights into your actual goals and may come across as generic.

Instead of saying, "I want to be a leader who inspires others," be more specific by saying, "My career aspiration is to become a compassionate and influential team leader, empowering my team members to achieve their goals and foster a collaborative work environment."

2. Being too modest or self-deprecating

While it's essential to strike a balance between confidence and humility, being overly modest or self-deprecating may undermine your credibility and hinder your chances of making a strong impression. It's crucial to showcase your strengths and aspirations with conviction without sounding arrogant.

Instead of downplaying your accomplishments with statements like, "I was just lucky to receive that award," own your achievements and say, "I am proud of the hard work and dedication that led to receiving the award, and it motivates me to continue striving for excellence in my career."

Strike the right balance between authentic and impressive

When answering questions about your career aspirations, honesty in your responses is essential, as it reflects your genuine motivations and long-term goals.

Strike a balance between authenticity and alignment, and let your enthusiasm for your career path shine through. By articulating your aspirations with clarity and conviction, you present yourself as a proactive and dedicated candidate, poised to make a significant impact within the organization. Your ability to combine honesty and alignment is the key to leaving a strong impression and increasing your chances of securing the opportunity that aligns perfectly with your career aspirations.

Want to Give Your Life More Meaning? Think of It As a ‘Hero’s Journey’

your journey our expertise

Y ou might not think you have much in common with Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, or Katniss Everdeen. But imagining yourself as the main character of a heroic adventure could help you achieve a more meaningful life.

Research published earlier this year in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology touts the benefits of reframing your life as a Hero’s Journey—a common story structure popularized by the mythologist Joseph Campbell that provides a template for ancient myths and recent blockbusters. In his 1949 book The Hero with a Thousand Faces , Campbell details the structure of the journey, which he describes as a monomyth. In its most elementary form, a hero goes on an adventure, emerges victorious from a defining crisis, and then returns home changed for the better.

“The idea is that there’s a hero of some sort who experiences a change of setting, which could mean being sent off to a magical realm or entering a new thing they’re not used to,” says study author Benjamin A. Rogers, an assistant professor of management and organization at Boston College. “That sets them off on a quest where they encounter friends and mentors, face challenges, and return home to benefit their community with what they’ve learned.”

According to Rogers’ findings, perceiving your life as a Hero’s Journey is associated with psychological benefits such as enhanced well-being, greater life satisfaction, feeling like you’re flourishing, and reduced depression. “The way that people tell their life story shapes how meaningful their lives feel,” he says. “And you don’t have to live a super heroic life or be a person of adventure—virtually anyone can rewrite their story as a Hero’s Journey.”

More From TIME

The human brain is wired for stories, Rogers notes, and we respond to them in powerful ways. Previous research suggests that by the time we’re in our early 20s, most of us have constructed a narrative identity—an internalized and evolving life story—that explains how we became the person we are, and where our life might go in the future. “This is how we've been communicating and understanding ourselves for thousands of years,” he says. Rogers’ research suggests that if people view their own story as following a Hero’s Journey trajectory, it increases meaning regardless of how they initially perceived their lives; even those who thought their lives had little meaning are able to benefit.

While Rogers describes a “re-storying intervention” in his research, some psychologists have used the Hero’s Journey structure as part of their practice for years. Lou Ursa, a licensed psychotherapist in California, attended Pacifica Graduate Institute, which is the only doctoral program in the country focused on mythology. The university even, she notes, houses Campbell’s personal library. As a result, mythology was heavily integrated into her psychology grad program. In addition to reflecting on what the Hero’s Journey means to her personally, she often brings it up with clients. “The way I talk about it is almost like an eagle-eye view versus a snake-eye view of our lives,” she says. “So often we’re just seeing what’s in front of us. I think that connecting with a myth or a story, whether it’s the Hero’s Journey or something else, can help us see the whole picture, especially when we’re feeling lost or stuck.”

As Rogers’ research suggests, changing the way you think about the events of your life can help you move toward a more positive attitude. With that in mind, we asked experts how to start reframing your life story as a Hero’s Journey.

Practice reflective journaling

Campbell described more than a dozen key elements of a Hero’s Journey, seven of which Rogers explored in his research: protagonist, shift, quest, allies, challenge, transformation, and legacy. He says reflecting on these aspects of your story—even if it’s just writing a few sentences down—can be an ideal first step to reframe your circumstances. Rogers offers a handful of prompts that relate back to the seven key elements of a Hero’s Journey. To drill in on “protagonist,” for example, ask yourself: What makes you you ? Spend time reflecting on your identity, personality, and core values. When you turn to “shift,” consider: What change or new experience prompted your journey to become who you are today? Then ponder what challenges stand in your way, and which allies can support or help you in your journey. You can also meditate on the legacy your journey might leave.

Ask yourself who would star in the movie of your life

One way to assess your inner voice is to figure out who would star in a movie about your life, says Nancy Irwin, a clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who employs the Hero’s Journey concept personally and professionally. Doing so can help us “sufficiently dissociate and see ourselves objectively rather than subjectively,” she says. Pay attention to what appeals to you about that person: What traits do they embody that you identify with? You might, for example, admire the person’s passion, resilience, or commitment to excellence. “They inspire us because there’s some quality that we identify with,” Irwin says. “Remember, you chose them because you have that quality yourself.” Keeping that in mind can help you begin to see yourself as the hero of your own story.

Go on more heroic adventures—or just try something new

In classic Hero’s Journey stories, the protagonist starts off afraid and refuses a call to adventure before overcoming his fears and committing to the journey. Think of Odysseus being called to fight the Trojans, but refusing the call because he doesn’t want to leave his family. Or consider Rocky Balboa: When he was given the chance to fight the world’s reigning heavyweight champion, he immediately said no—before ultimately, of course, accepting the challenge. The narrative has proven timeless because it “reflects the values of society,” Rogers says. “We like people who have new experiences and grow from their challenges.”

He suggests asking yourself: “If I want to have a more meaningful life, what are the kinds of things I could do?” One possible avenue is seeking out novelty, whether that’s as simple as driving a new way home from work or as dramatic as finally selling your car entirely and committing to public transportation.

Be open to redirection

The Hero’s Journey typically starts with a mission, which prompts the protagonist to set off on a quest. “But often the road isn’t linear,” says Kristal DeSantis, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Austin. “There are twists, turns, unexpected obstacles, and side quests that get in the way. The lesson is to be open to possibility.”

That perspective can also help you flip the way you see obstacles. Say you’re going through a tough time: You just got laid off, or you were diagnosed with a chronic illness. Instead of dwelling on how unfortunate these hurdles are, consider them opportunities for growth and learning. Think to yourself: What would Harry do? Reframe the challenges you encounter as a chance to develop resilience and perseverance, and to be the hero of your own story.

When you need a boost, map out where you are on your journey

Once you find a narrative hero you can relate to, keep their journey in mind as you face new challenges. “If you feel stuck or lost, you can look to that story and be like, ‘Which part do I feel like I’m in right now?’” Ursa says. Maybe you’re in the midst of a test that feels so awful that you’ve lost perspective on its overall importance—i.e., the fact that it’s only part of your journey. (See: When Katniss was upset about the costume that Snow forced her to wear—before she then had to go fight off a pack of ferocious wolves to save her life.) Referencing a familiar story “can help you have that eagle-eye view of what might be next for you, or what you should be paying attention to,” Ursa says. “Stories become this map that we can always turn to.” Think of them as reassurance that a new chapter almost certainly awaits.

The client experience: elevating beyond customer service.

James Loffler is the President of Loffler Companies , a leader in business technology services and solutions across the Upper Midwest.

In the dynamic landscape of business and office technology, the concept of customer experience (CX) has been receiving significant attention. While CX is often associated with consumer-facing industries, I think it’s also essential to explore how it applies to service companies.

According to a report by PwC, 59% of consumers state that they "will walk away after several bad experiences" with a company or brand.

To achieve truly outstanding client experiences, differentiation begins at the top; it's up to CEOs and leadership teams to steer their organizations. Especially for services firms where relationships are at the core, I believe it is imperative to up the bar from just "good customer service" to creating truly world-class experiences for clients.

Leadership’s Role In Shaping Client Experience

In any well-functioning organization, effective leadership sets the tone. The best place to start? Inspect what you expect.

Samsung Issues Critical Update For Millions Of Galaxy Users

How to watch real ‘martha’ ‘baby reindeer’ interview with piers morgan, microsoft is finally ending its focus on big budget gaming nonsense, delivering beyond expectations.

As leaders, we set the bar for client experience. If we expect our organization to deliver world-class service, we must actively define what that entails.

Explicitly outline the outcomes and standards you expect from your team, particularly regarding exceptional client service. Engage your team in defining excellence and encourage discussions to shape the service culture. Develop KPIs aligned with these expectations and regularly report on them for ongoing improvement.

Creating Mechanisms For Inspection

Expectations alone won’t suffice. Ensure that qualitative and quantitative mechanisms are established to assess the degree to which your organization is meeting those expectations. Tools like end-user experience scoring, company net promoter scores (NPS), customer surveys and formalized feedback loops can provide valuable insights into client experiences. When receiving positive feedback, ensure to acknowledge and commend your team’s contributions, as this helps to reinforce world-class customer experience.

Taking Personal Accountability

Ultimately, it starts with us—the leaders. We must embody the commitment to exceptional client interactions. Through active listening, empathy and responsiveness in your own client interactions, you set the tone for your company. Additionally, coaching and mentoring our teams, advocating for necessary resources and celebrating successes reinforce your desired culture.

I find this concept crucial, as it extends beyond internal leadership practices. As leaders, it is our responsibility to proactively engage with key stakeholders and solicit feedback on customer experience. Conduct targeted discussions with clients to assess interactions, pinpoint successful practices, identify areas for improvement and strategize on enhancing the overall experience.

Cultivating A Culture Of Client-Centric Ownership

The concept of culture is frequently discussed, yet it is far more than a buzzword. It’s a strategic approach that influences internal morale and values, driving business growth and client satisfaction.

The ethos of client-centricity should permeate every level of your organization. From frontline staff to senior executives, everyone must prioritize exceptional client experiences—whether through addressing concerns promptly or advocating for clients at the highest level. When you encourage innovative thinking and advocate for clients' best interests, it empowers team members to surpass expectations, even if it means a small investment on the organization’s part.

It’s crucial to remember that these seemingly minor investments can yield substantial returns in terms of client satisfaction, loyalty and long-term success. By committing wholeheartedly to delivering exceptional client experiences, you position your organization as a strategic differentiator in the market.

Building Exceptional Client Experience

Delivering a world-class client experience requires a multifaceted approach that goes beyond transactional interactions. Here are three pillars to put into practice that can contribute to exceptional client engagement.

1. Educate, Don’t Sell

The principle of "educate, don’t sell" is a critical aspect of client engagement. It extends beyond the initial prospect stage, encompassing both pre-client interactions and ongoing relationships. When prospects and clients express interest in solutions or services, the focus should not solely be on product marketing. Instead, the emphasis should shift toward education.

Ways to educate include generating valuable content, hosting engaging events and meeting clients on their terms; the aim is to equip them with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. This approach fosters a deep understanding of the solutions or services, enabling clients to see the value beyond the product itself. It’s about building a relationship based on trust and mutual respect rather than a simple transactional exchange.

2. Tailored Interactions, Not Cookie-Cutter Approaches

When working with clients, prioritize tailoring interactions to their specific needs rather than relying on generic approaches. Actively listen to their challenges and understand their pain points. It’s not about offering a one-size-fits-all solution but crafting strategies that resonate with each individual client.

Ask specific questions to reveal the client’s distinct needs, such as "What are the key long-term goals and aspirations you have for your business?" Consider the strategic vision of their business as a whole—sales, finance, operations, etc.—rather than solely focusing on a specific segment your solution is built to support.

This understanding helps form the foundation for designing innovations that are not only effective but align with your client’s long-term business objectives.

3. Harnessing The Human Factor

Expanding on tailored interactions, I find that the human factor is critical to successful client experiences. With this in mind, face-to-face conversations with clients can hold significant value. These interactions are not just about exchanging information; they are opportunities to build rapport and understand your client on a personal level.

Coming prepared to these meetings with a clear understanding of the client’s needs and potential solutions can make these interactions more productive and personalized. Sitting down with clients, discussing their requirements in detail and co-creating solutions not only involves the client in the process but also ensures that the solutions are perfectly aligned to their needs.

Remember, differentiation through client experience begins at the top. By placing the client at the heart of everything we do, we can create a client experience that truly stands out.

Excellence in client experience isn’t just a strategy; it’s a culture that should permeate every level of your organization. So, let’s inspect what we expect, elevate our interactions and lead by example.
