Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers Team Up for 2020 Tour

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers have announced dates for their anticipated 2020 tour. Dubbed A Good Look’n Tour, the trek kicks off in February in Birmingham, Alabama, and winds its way across the country before wrapping up with a home state show in Louisville, Kentucky. Both Simpson and Childers are Kentucky natives.

The pair’s relationship goes back to Childers’ 2017 album Purgatory , which Simpson co-produced with David Ferguson. He and Ferguson also produced Childers’ latest album Country Squire , released in August. Childers is currently on his Country Squire Run Tour. He’ll play four nights at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium just prior to the tour with Simpson, setting up shop at the Mother Church on February 6th, 7th, 15th, and 16th.

Simpson released his new album Sound & Fury in September. A skronky rock record, it arrived with an accompanying anime film on Netflix.

Tickets for Simpson and Childers’ tour go on sale November 8th.

Once again, Sturgill Simpson is screwing with all of us. This time it has to do with the revelation of his upcoming tour dates behind his new album and anime film, Sound & Fury. We already knew that Sturgill was going to be touring with fellow Kentuckian Tyler Childers. Now he’s revealed the dates and cities, but not in the conventional way.

Sturgill Simpson

Following the release of his new album, Sound & Fury, GRAMMY award-winning singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson has announced North American dates for his 2020 Sturgill Simpson: A Good Look’n Tour. The blues hangover, sturgill simpson revives classic rock on his good look'n tour.

a good look'n tour

As I was being scanned into Birmingham, Alabama’s Legacy Arena at the BJCC on February 21, I could already hear Tyler Childers’s Appalachian party anthem “I Swear (To God)” floating through the rafters. The arena was packed with flannel shirt-wearing country music lovers listening intently to the down-home jam session happening on the stage. Front-and-center was Tyler Childers himself donning a baseball cap and a long sleeve t-shirt. Surrounding him were the Food Stamps, playing the type of music that must stream through the windows of heaven’s honky tonk bars. The electric part of his set consisted almost entirely of music from his Purgatory and Country Squire albums. After playing a stirring rendition of The Charlie Daniels Band’s song “Trudy,” the Food Stamps exited the stage leaving Tyler alone with an acoustic guitar.

The final three songs in Childers’s set were performed solo. Childers began the triplet with classic “Nose on the Grindstone.” Following that was “Lady May,” a love song Childers wrote for his wife, singer-songwriter Senora May. Childers topped off his performance with the heart-wrenching “Follow You to Virgie.” After the Kentucky Bard finished his set, he took a bow and exited stage left, leaving the audience awestruck. Childers has the type of voice that would have still been famous in a time long before the advent of things like the internet and electric instruments. His music comes directly from the soul and touches the hearts of listeners in a primeval sort of way. Childers just recently finished a solo tour of his new album Country Squire , so having him as an opener was certainly a treat for myself and my fellow concertgoers. His performance provided a wonderful start to what would soon become an unforgettable night.

After about a twenty-minute intermission, Sturgill Simpson and his band took the stage for their first performance of the Good Look'n Tour. Each man wore a solid-colored suit with a floral motif. Sturgill’s suit was black (to match his sunglasses), and his band donned red. At the back of the stage hung a grand red curtain, illuminated by bright lights. On the floor were four bright spotlights, emanating a radiance reminiscent of the headlights on the cover of his new Sound and Fury album.

The band started out with a rocking rendition of “Ronin” the first song on Sound and Fury . From the start, they electrified the atmosphere. Every aspect of the performance was immaculate. A sharp detour from his pure country past, the performance of hearkened back to the hair-band era of the late-80's. It was pure rock-n-roll the way it was meant to be played. Sturgill was on guitar, riffing and having the most fun I have ever seen a country musician have on stage. Bassist Chuck Bartels was gloriously grooving. Drummer Miles Miller was nearly blowing the roof open. And keyboardist Bobby Emmett had me convinced that the keyboard was made to be a rock instrument. My personal favorite songs in this set were the operatic “All Said and Done” and the cosmic “Mercury In Retrograde.”

Some concertgoers were beginning to get frustrated with this rock set. Simpson did, after all make his name playing what most people would call outlaw country music. One woman to the left of me even shouted, “Come on Sturgill, play something good!” About ten songs in, Sturgill gave the people what they wanted and played some old favorites. He played a couple songs from each of his previous albums including “Breakers Roar” and “Brace For Impact (Live a Little)” off his Grammy Award winning A Sailor’s Guide to Earth , “It Ain’t All Flowers” and “Turtles All the Way Down” his Metamodern Sounds in Country Music , and even “Some Days” from his 2013 album Hightop Mountain .

At some point in his set, Simpson addressed rumors that the Good Look’n Tour would be his last saying, “Y’all don’t believe that bull-. It’s called marketing mother-,” a statement to which the audience responded with raucous cheer. It was plain to anyone at that show that Sturgill Simpson is first and foremost an artist. He loves his music and that is precisely why he plays it so well. Arguably, one of the reasons he has been so successful is because he refuses to cater to the opinions of mainstream country record executives, and he isn’t shy about playing the music he wants to play no matter what anyone thinks (a message stated clearly in his song “Make Art Not Friends”). At one point in the concert, he was turned around, facing the amplifiers behind him, playing his guitar, and absorbing the music emanating from the speakers. In that moment something became clear: Sturgill Simpson has always been playing music for himself, we’re just lucky enough to be in the proximity.

Rose Zhang Wins Founders Cup To End Nelly Korda's Record-Tying LPGA Tour Winning Streak

C LIFTON, N.J. (AP) - Great things have been expected from Rose Zhang from the moment the two-time NCAA champion won in her professional debut last year and joined the LPGA Tour the following week.

The 20-year-old finally delivered again Sunday, birdieing four of the final five holes to win the Cognizant Founders Cup. She beat Madelene Sagstrom by two strokes while putting an official end to Nelly Korda's record-tying LPGA Tour winning streak.

"I was able to grow so much throughout the journey in this past year,” Zhang said. “I don't know, it's crazy to come out here. Didn't have any expectation of having to win because I realize that it's all just noise and I really just have to be able to work at it myself and try my best to put myself in positions like this.

"But no matter what happened this week, I would've been very satisfied and it reignited my passion for the game once again," she added after winning on Mother’s Day.

Zhang, who was talking to her mom coming into the media room, actually had a funny start to her round. The Stanford product almost fell on her rear end taking a shot from an ackward stance on the first hole. The shot could have gone anywhere. It hit the pin and she made par.

"I just thought to myself, wow, I mean, today is probably going to be a lucky day," said Zhang, who played with Sagstrom in a stroke-play duel with the rest of the field far back. “Maybe I can get something going. Would not have imagined myself being who are now, especially after 12.

Sagstrom birdied that hole to take a three-shot lead and things did not look good for Zhang.

It got better in the event that honors the 13 founding members of the tour.

Zhang, who shot a 6-under 66, birdied Nos. 14, 15, 17 and 18 at Upper Montclair Country Club, while Sagstrom bogeyed the 16th in finished two back.

Korda, who struggled the final two days after playing magnificently in winning the five straight events she entered, began the day 11 strokes back and shot her second straight 73 to tie for seventh at 7 under.

She had no regrets. She hopes someone will join her and Hall of Famers Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam in winning five straight or even more.

"But just to do that with all the competition out here is super, super rewarding with how much work that I've put in," the 25-year-old Korda said. "So I think to get a streak like that in any sport in general is amazing with the amount of talent that I feel like every athlete has in their sport. Just an amazing feeling and hopefully one day it'll sink in."

It was a heart-breaking end for Sagstrom, the 31-year-old Swede who started the day with a one-shot lead and was looking for her first victory since 2020 and second overall on tour.

“I struck it so nicely this week. I've worked really hard for a long time," Sagstrom said. "I putted incredible. It's really high up there. That's probably why it hurts more. Nothing against Rose. She played incredible. I kind of wish I gave myself a few more chances at the end there. Didn't want it to end that way. This is probably the best golf I played in years."

Sagstrom led by three after 13, but Zhang curled in a birdie putt at 14 and made an 8-footer on the next to draw within one. They were tied after after 16, with Sagstrom missing a 10-foot par putt after a bad chip from the back fringe.

After Sagstrom saved par at the par-3 17th with a fast, downhill 25-footer, Zhang took the lead with a short birdie putt and she closed things out on the final hole with Sagstrom waiting to make a birdie attempt.

Zhang, who won last year at nearby Liberty National in her pro debut, finished at 24 under 264.

Rookie Gabriela Ruffels of Australia was third at 9 under, her best finish. She shot 71. Peiyun Chien of Taiwan and Ruoning Yin and Xiyu Lin of China tied at 8 under.
