How to Visit Ranthambore Fort – [what to see, how to get here]

We arrived in Sawai Madhopur specifically to try and spot wild Tigers in Ranthambore National Park. However, its impossible to ignore the magnificent Ranthambore Fort. It sits high on an escarpment in the middle of the National Park. We’d already seen the glorious Gwalior Fort, the dirty Delhi Red Fort and the lovely Agra Fort. We also planned to see more of the Rajasthan Hill Forts, so this was too good an opportunity to pass up.

Ranthambore Fort is one of the six forts included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title of “Hill Forts of Rajasthan”. The fort walls are around 7 kilometres long and it was founded in 944. Its located on an outcrop 700 feet above the surrounding land and was built by the Nagil Jats. There were also Buddhist stupa established here in the 3 rd century by Ashoka, who’s pillar we saw in the glorious Sanchi earlier in our trip.

Ranthambore Fort – UNESCO Hill Fort of Rajasthan

Ranthambore Fort gets its name from two hills – Thanbhor, on which the fort is located, and Ran which is nearby.

The fort has a long and detailed history, but eventually was passed to the Maharajas of Jaipur in the 17 th century. It remained part of Jaipur until Indian Independence. Ranthambore National Park that now surrounds the fort was a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Jaipur. Jaipur joined the state of Rajasthan in 1950. Ranthambore Fort contains three Hindu temples which are dedicated to Ganesh, Shiva and Ramlalaji. There’s also a Jain temple here too.

Our Tour of Ranthambore Fort

We arrived in Sawai Madhopur, checked into our hotel and then had lunch. After lunch on that first day we took a tour with Vishnu who runs the Green View Hotel. He’s also a National Park Guide. We left for our tour at 4pm, paying 1500 INR for his guiding services, a driver and a jeep for a three hour tour. This fee also included our park entry fees.

There were just us two, Vishnu and our driver in a small “gypsy” jeep. En-route to the fort Vishnu gave us an overview, background and history of the fort, ensuring we understood the most pertinent bits. We’re here to explore the fort and see some of the wildlife, but not specifically tigers, that will come later.

Entering Ranthambore Fort

It takes perhaps 15 minutes to drive into the National Park from Sawai Madhopur. Then it’s a further few minutes to drive to steps at the base of the Fort. This is where you leave the jeep and start the climb up the fort. It’s not an onerous climb, the path is stone clad and good.

Spotting Wildlife in Ranthambore Fort

Going through the park you’ll pass deer, peacocks and langur monkeys. Literally, just at the side of the road.

I’m definitely not a monkey fan. The langur’s, however, are more pleasant than the more aggressive red faced monkeys that you’ll find in the town. That said, don’t leave anything lying around or it will disappear pretty quickly!

The Buildings of Ranthambore Fort

The fort is in an arrested state of decay, many walls have been repaired and its possible to still see some of the decoration in some areas. There is, though, graffiti, but not a huge amount.

You will find fabulous views over Ranthambore National Park and be able to see that the fort’s defences are superb. There are still a number of active temples throughout the fort. They’re well worth putting your head into, especially if you have a guide to explain further. I don’t know how you would visit the park without a guide, as you’re not allowed to drive into the park without one.

Don’t miss the water tanks. It’s here, where, according to legend, thousands of Ranthambore women committed mass suicide, rather than falling prey to an invading army.

Entrance to Ranthambore Fort is free, but you’ll need to pay for a tour and if you choose to take a tiger safari then you’ll need to pay for that as well. Ranthambore Fort is open from October until June and is open to visitors from 06:30 until 10:30 and then from 14:00 until 18:30.

Don’t Miss out on Ranthambore Fort

If you’ve seen the Red F ort in Delhi, or Agra Fort , then you might be tempted to give Ranthambore Fort a miss and just head to see the tigers. Don’t! The wild forts of India have a mystique all of their own. They’re remote, often in harsh countryside, and so beautiful in their desolation. There just happen to be wild tigers at Ranthambore too. Don’t miss them either!

The Ranthambore fort was not made by any Nagil Jat ruler, but by the early Chauhans. Where did you get this information that it was constructed by Nagil Jat rulers? Would be really helpful if you may kindly answer

History of Ranthambore Fort

The Ranthambore Fort is one of the oldest and most historically significant forts in Rajasthan. Due to its location, it acted as a prime trade link between North and Central India and was captured and fortified by many rulers through centuries since its construction.

The actual date of construction of the fort is unconfirmed. However, many believe that construction was started in the 8th century by King Jayant, the Chauhan ruler. The fort was completed sometime in the early 1100s.

Since then, the fort has been attacked and fortified by many rulers, including Prithviraj Chauhan I, Muhammad Ghori, Prithviraj Chauhan III, Iltutmish, Sultan Balban and also the emperor of the Delhi Sultanate- Alauddin Khilji. The fort was finally conquered by the Mughal ruler- Akbar in 1558 and it remained under the control of the Mughals till the middle of the 18th century.

In 1763, after the influence of the Mughal empire started to diminish, the Rajput ruler Sawai Madho Singh attempted to capture the fort unsuccessfully, and instead fortified a village called Sherpur near the fort and renamed it Sawai Madhopur.

He was then the ruler of the Jaipur state and after creating Sawai Madhopur, he was eventually granted control of the Ranthambore Fort by the Mughal ruler. Sawai Man Singh built a railway line between the cities of Jaipur and Sawai Madhopur during the reign of the British over India. This railway station has since expanded to become the primary access point to Ranthambore Fort.

Ranthambore Fort – Attractions and Places to Visit

Apart from the Ranthambore ka Kila itself, there are quite some places that are quite popular and must not be missed when in Ranthambore.

Trinetra Ganesha Temple

The Trinetra Ganesh Temple is one of the oldest temples in India, built with red Karauli stone. It is situated inside the premises of the Ranthambore Fort , which is one of the most famous tourist attractions in all of Rajasthan. This temple is a one-of-a-kind temple, where Lord Ganesha is represented with all the members of his family.

The Sringar Aarti is performed at 9:00 am. The Bhog for the Lord is performed at 12:00 noon. The Sandhya or the evening Aarti, during the sunset is performed at 6:00 pm in summer and at 5:45 pm in winter. The Shayan Aarti is performed at 8:00 pm in the late evening, followed by a prayer in chorus chanted by the priests of the temple and the main devotees of the Lord. Even if you are not religious, or you want to see the fort and temple for their historical or architectural significance, the aartis are a spectacle to behold

In Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha is considered to be the powerful God of wealth, fortune, wisdom and education. Therefore, all year round, this temple receives thousands of marriage invitations and wish-fulfilment letters addressed to Lord Ganesh, addressed with the faith that the Lord will fulfil the wishes of His devotees.

Devotees from all over the world visit this temple throughout the year and even construct little images of houses near the temple premises, which in itself is an attractive feature about the place. People do this in the hope that their Lord will fulfil their dreams of buying a house or making one. Here, Ganesha is worshipped five times daily in the form of different “ aartis ”. The aarti or the first worshipping ceremony starts in the morning with the ‘morning aarti’ or the Prabhat Aarti.

Ranthambore Park

Ranthambore National Park is located about 13.5 kilometers from the city of Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan. Located at the junction of the Aravali and Vindhya hill ranges, this is one of the finest places to view wild animals, especially as they are used to being stared at here. The park covers an area of approximately 400 sq km, and if combined with the area of Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary area, is around 500 sq km.

Ranthambore National Park is dotted with structures that remind you of bygone eras. There are numerous water bodies scattered all across the park, which provide perfect relief to the wild animals during the scorching hot days in summers. A huge fort, after which the park is named, towers over the park atop a hill. There are many ruins of bygone eras scattered all over the jungle, which give it a unique, wonderful and mixed flavour of nature, history and wildlife. Tigers at Ranthambore National park have been known to even hunt in full view of human visitors.

Malik Talao

Malik Lake is the smallest of the lakes in Ranthambore, but is immensely popular for the frequent views of wildlife that are offered here. Despite of its small size the banks are often teeming with several wild animals and birds . The Indian Marsh Crocodiles or Mugger can also be found here so one must approach the banks with extreme caution. Nevertheless, due to its high wildlife activity, the lake is one of the best places to capture the animals with your camera. It is also one of the few places where spotting tigers is extremely frequent.

Padam Talao

Located deep inside the Ranthambore National Park, Padam Talao is one of the largest lakes in the city. It is believed that this is the very lake where Princess Padmavati would bathe, and also the place where she committed sati. The beautifully ornate Jogi Mahal stands in close proximity to the lake.

Surrounded by dense forests, the lake is frequented by several animals who make their way to the lake to drink water in the sweltering heat. One can also spot the rare Chinkara Deer in the morning.

Since several animals hunt in close proximity to the lake, it is a great spot for wildlife photography. In the summer, when the water starts drying out, you can spot crocodiles and other animals during the summers. Although you cannot go near it, you can catch a glimpse of it while enjoying a jeep safari, or from the Ranthambore Fort.

Ranthambore Fort- Hunting Grounds of the Kings of Jaipur

Located within the boundaries of the Ranthambore National park , the Ranthambore Fort has been declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Before India got Independent, the Ranthambore National Park used to serve as the hunting ground for the Kings of Jaipur, because of rich bio-diversity of animals and birds, who lived here. Even today, the 4km2 area of Ranthambore Fort is virtually divided into two sections. Whereas, the Western part of the fort contains many temples and Holy Stambhas, the Eastern part is still considered as a wild area where, a number of species of birds, leopards and Fishing cats etc. are frequently seen. The Ranthambore Fort used to be a place, highly coveted by the rulers of North India, due to its presence in between the trade route of North and Central India.

History of Ranthambore Fort

Rajput King Sapaldaksha of Chauhan Dynasty started the construction of the fort on 944 AD. And since then many of his successors contributed towards the construction of Ranthambore Fort.

Rao Hammir Deo Chauhan was the one whose role has been considered as the major one.

Alauddin khilji tries to capture the fort during 1300 AD but failed to do so. After three unsuccessful attempts, his army finally conquered the Ranthambhore Fort in the 13th century and ended the reign of the Chauhan’s.

After three centuries Akbar finally took over the Fort and dissolved the State of Ranthambhore in 1558. The fort stayed in the possession of the Mughal rulers till the mid 18th century.

In the 18th century, the Maratha rulers were at their peak and to check them Sawai Madho Singh, that time king of the Jaipur requested Mughals to had over the Fort to him.

Sawai Madho Singh then developed the nearby village and fortified the fort and renamed the village as Sawai Madhopur .

Pols of Ranthambhore Fort

The Ranthambhore Fort formed a significant part of the Chahamana kingdom of sakambhari. It is said to have been constructed by Maharaja Jayanta.

The Yadavas ruled over it and subsequently, the fort was occupied by the Muslim rulers of Delhi. Hammir Deo was the most powerful ruler of Ranthambhore. The following pols are situated in the fort:

Navlakha Pol: This is the first gate provided with an arch facing east, having a width of 3.20 m. There is a provision of guard rooms and gun slits, It is made of ashlar masonry. A copper plate inscription affixed to the gate states that the existing wooden doors were provided during the period of Sawai Jagat Singh of Jaipur.
Hathia Pol: The second gate, facing the south-east, is 3.20 m wide. It is bounded by a natural rock on one side and the fort wall on the other. A rectangular Guardroom is built over the gate.
Ganesh Pol: This is the third gate, facing south, having 3.10m wide span. The beam of the gate is supported by brackets over which is provided a recessed ogee arch. The eastern side of the gate is attached to the rock.
Andheri Pol: The last gate, facing north, has a span of 3.30m. It is bounded on both sides by fortification walls and is provided with a recessed ogee arch having projected balconies on sides.
Delhi Gate: : It is located in the north-west corner, facing north and measuring 4.70m wide. It is provided with a recessed arch. The gate also has a number of guard cells.
Satpol: : It is the loftiest gateway facing south and is situated on the western side of the fort along the nullah. It is 4.70 m wide and is provided with two-storeyed guard cells. Its recess is flanked on both sides by projected balconies. The battlements at the top are built of brick masonry.
Suraj Pol: : comparatively, it is a small gateway facing east along the eastern fortification. It is 2.10m wide.

Places to Visit Inside Ranthambore Fort

The fort has massive walls and gates. There is a number of structures inside the fort-like Battis Khambhat Chhatri, Hammir Badi Kachahari, Hammir Palace, chhoti Kachahari and many more.

There are seven gates in the fort namely Navlakha Pol, Hathi Pol, Ganesh Pol, Andheri Pol, Delhi Gate, Satpol, Suraj Pol.

Siddhasenasuri, who used to live in the Ranthambore Fort in the 12th century, has listed this place as one of holy Jaina tirthas.
The Ganesh Temple near to the main entry gate of the Ranthambore Fort is a Hindu Pilgrimage and is heavily crowded with the worshippers on Ganesh Chaturthi every year.

Ranthambore Fort located within the Ranthambore National Park, near the town of Sawai Madhopur, the park being the former hunting grounds of the Maharajahs of Jaipur up until the time of India’s Independence. It is a formidable fort having been a prime focus of the historic developments of Rajasthan. The fort was held by the Chahamanas (Chauhans) till the 13th century, when the Delhi Sultanate captured it.

In 2013, at the 37th session of the World Heritage Committee, Ranthambore Fort, along with 5 other forts of Rajasthan, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan.

The Ranthambore fort was built by a Chauhan ruler, although the specific name of the ruler is disputed. A widely held belief states that the fort was built the reign of Sapaldaksha, in 944 CE. Another theory states that the fort was built during the reign of Jayant, in 1110 CE. According to Government of Rajasthan’s Amber Development & Management Authority, it is likely that the construction started in the mid-10th century during the reign of Sapaldaksha, and continued a few centuries after that.
