Average accomodation

We made a 2 weeks round trip in Norway with our car. Norway is beautiful and we enjoyed the nature. Booking a trip through Voigt is expensive, we paid over 5000 euro for 2 weeks for 2 adults and 2 young adults for the ferry from Denmark and a mix of berg cabin and hotel rooms, without meals, fuel so the total expenses where a lot higher. Voigt creates the image that their accommodations are all handpicked, unfortunate this is not our experience, 1 accommodation was a new development, we where on a building site instead of in beautiful nature, another was not the same as in our travel itinerary, the local booking agency found us another place. quite far away. Basically they are selling apartments, cabins, hotels in wintersport resorts that are not busy in the summer season. My experience was that with a little time I could have put together a better itinerary and found better accommodation through a booking site, we where in high season, but there is plenty available.

mars trip sign up

Signing up for a mission to mars, and planning to never return.

Thousands of candidates are trying out for Mars One's mission of a lifetime.

— -- Kellie Gerardi is training for the mission of her life, one from which she might never return.

Gerardi is one of thousands of applicants vying for a trip to Mars, courtesy of an audacious new company called Mars One.

Only 100 potential astronauts will be finalists, but there’s a pretty massive catch: It’s a one-way ticket.

Despite the no-return clause, Mars One said 200,000 people from around the world, including Gerardi, have applied to leave everything on Earth behind.

“I know for a fact that no matter what, in my lifetime, I’m going to space,” said Gerardi, who is newly engaged.

Signing Up for Mission to Mars With No Plan to Return

What it's like to train for a mission to mars, how mock mars mission will simulate life on the red planet.

The 26-year-old Florida native trained for the mission in the rocky plains of remote Utah, where she spent three weeks at the Mars Society’s Desert Research Station to learn what it takes for humans to survive on Mars, from moving and breathing in a space suit, to eating bizarre cuisines like zebra tarantulas, because bugs would be a food source on Mars.

The commercial space industry has boomed in recent years, with companies like Space-X and Virgin Galactic building their own rockets and spaceships in an effort to make outer space available to everyone who wants to go.

And it’s not just for sport. Some scientists believe settling other planets is the best hope for human survival.

And when it comes to colonizing Mars, Bas Landorp, the 37-year-old CEO of Mars One, and his team of space experts claim they can do what NASA, so far, has not.

“Accept the new reality,” Landorp said. “Literally everybody on the globe will be watching, just like when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon.”

“We’re hiring the established aerospace companies from all over the world to design the systems, to build them, to test them, but no new inventions are needed to implement our program,” he added.

But while Landorp said the technology exists to get people to Mars, his company does not have the technology to bring people back to Earth, so the plan is to form a permanent colony with new crews arriving each year.

Of course there are extreme hurdles to overcome. Mars is about 200 million miles away from Earth, which translates to at least seven months of space travel to get there -- and no one has ever been there before.

But for people like Kellie Gerardi, the unknowns are not scary, just part of the dream.

“I think either you get it or you don't,” she said. “I would equate it almost to seeing Mt. Everest for the first time. Here is this hostile challenging environment, and either you feel a yearning to climb it or you don't. And if you don't, I don't know if--that I could ever explain that to you.”

Gerardi is planning her wedding, but says getting married won’t stop her from leaving Earth and her fiancee is supportive of her decision.

“Everyone makes the joke to us, ‘til Mars do us part,’” she said. “I'm getting married next year. I couldn't be more excited. I couldn't be more in love. Do I still see myself going to space in the future? Yes… I would go, and that's a hard reality.”

Another Mars One hopeful is Sue Ann Pien, a 35-year-old tech worker from Los Angeles. She said finding out she was a potential candidate “changed the entire trajectory” of her life, and she started a sort of Earth bucket list.

“I just took off and I went and I experience amazing things around the world that I wanted to do,” Pien said. “I was going up volcanoes in Bali and scuba diving.”

Apply Now For A One-Way Trip To Mars

Mars One has begun accepting video applications for a mission to colonize the red planet in 2023.

By Rose Pastore | Published Apr 22, 2013 11:00 PM EDT

Mars colony

Want to live and die on Mars? Mars One has officially begun its worldwide search for astronauts who will fly to Mars in 2023—and never come back.

The first humans on Mars may be reality TV stars.

The ultimate goal is to select 24 to 40 candidates who will travel to Mars in groups of four. Mars One wants to land the first group (two men and two women, ideally from four different continents, says CEO Bas Lansdorp) on the red planet in 2023, with the other groups following one at a time, every two years. Applications close August 31, 2013.

Mars One Dragon Capsule

The nonprofit organization plans to televise the final rounds of the search in 2014, which means the first humans on Mars may be reality TV stars. But first, Mars One is asking the public to rate the application videos to help narrow down the selection pool. According to Norbert Kraft, the chief medical officer and head of the astronaut selection program, aspiring Martians should have five qualities: resilience, adaptability, curiosity, empathy, and creativity.

Mars One living quarters

Mars One habitat

To filter out spam and frivolous entries, Mars One is charging an application fee that varies by country (it’s $38 in the United States). Applicants must create a 30- to 70-second video that explains why they want to go to Mars, and why they’re the best candidate. The pool will be narrowed to 24 to 40 in 2015.

If you’re one of the (uh, lucky?) people chosen for the program, you’ll move to the United States to spend the next seven years as a full-time, salaried employee of Mars One. Nine months of each year will be spent learning dentistry, emergency medicine, general medicine, engineering, biology, mechanics—anything you might need to know on an inhospitable planet with a population of four. The other three months of each year will be spent in a Mars habitat mock-up, complete with a 40-minute communication delay to the outside world and simulated emergencies. The hardest thing they’ll face during the simulation? A broken toilet, Lansdorp says. “That’s when people get out of control.”

hydroponic garden on mars

It will cost $6 billion to get the first group of four to their new home (the reality show is supposed to fund the mission). The company will use SpaceX spacecraft to send rovers and supplies ahead of the astronauts, and then the SpaceX Falcon Heavy will get the crew to Mars, where they will assemble their habitat and begin growing their own food. Once on the red planet, the crew can do what they want—they won’t be taking orders from Mars One or anyone else back on Earth. “They will make a new civilization,” Kraft says. “They will make their own holidays, their own laws. We need to send mature people, because we won’t be telling them what to do.”

Why sign up for a one-way Mars trip? Three applicants explain the appeal

Mars looms large in a Hubble Space Telescope photo - and in the imaginations of those who have signed up for a one-way trip to the Red Planet.

A one-way trip to Mars sounds like something you'd wish on your worst enemy — so why would more than 78,000 people from around the world pay up to $75 for a chance to die on another planet?

"I can say I have an ulterior motive," said David Brin, who has written more than a dozen science-fiction novels — including "The Postman," which was turned into a Kevin Costner movie in 1997 . "I'd get a lot of writing done, and it might be memorable."

As a master of hard science fiction, the 62-year-old Brin knows better than most applicants what the first Red Planet settlers would face if they're sent off in 2022, as the Dutch-based Mars One venture has proposed.

The settlers would have to be sealed up in habitats, protected from harsh radiation, supplied with machine-made air and water, and nourished by whatever food can be grown on a cold, barren planet. They'd have to keep their sanity, millions of miles away from their families and Mission Control. Worst of all, they'd have to face the fact that there's no guarantee of ever going back.

Will this scheme actually work? "I give it a low probability of happening," Brin said, "and I don't consider it to be the most responsible thing I've ever seen."

Nevertheless, the venture has an attraction for Brin and tens of thousands of others, The ages of those listed in Mars One's database range from 18 to 71. All those applicants are facing a long road even before the first four-person crew gets off the planet. Mars One is accepting applicants through Aug. 31. The field of applicants would first be whittled down by panels of experts. Then they'd undergo trial by reality TV, followed by years of training.

"This may sound crazy, but it kind of reminds me of 'The Hunger Games,' " said Kayli McArthur, an 18-year-old student who's one of the youngest Mars One applicants. "It's cool that it would be televised, but that's not my whole thing."

On the other end of the age spectrum, 71-year-old psychiatrist Sanford Pomerantz is a little surprised that it's taking this long to get something like Mars One off the ground. "I thought by now we would have colonized Mars," said Pomerantz, who's currently the oldest applicant on Mars One's list.

So what's the appeal of Mars One? It's too early for Brin, McArthur and Pomerantz to give a lot of thought to their adventure on Mars, let alone their death on Mars. Instead, they're focusing on the adventure here on Earth. Here's what's behind their thinking:

Click on the image to go to David Brin's Mars One application video.

David Brin: 'My main purpose is the conversation'

Brin sees Mars One as just one of a number of ventures aimed at expanding humanity's frontier, ranging from Virgin Galactic's suborbital space tours to Golden Spike's moon missions . "It's emblematic of the new era that we're about to enter at long last — what I call the barnstorming era," he said.

Like the daring airplane fliers of the 1920s, these 21st-century space barnstormers are willing to take bigger risks in hopes of providing bigger thrills — and eventually, earning bigger payoffs. The Mars One project is "a great way to get the discussion going," Brin said.

"You have to assume that it may not work, and that there will be a statue of you on Mars someday," he said. "I'm aware of the tradeoffs, and I'm willing to explore it further, but largely my main purpose is the conversation. We've got to be talking about how we can be a more exploratory people — a more interesting people, if you like."

Brin doesn't doubt that Mars One will find plenty of qualified (and interesting) people willing to take the risk.

"People who cannot imagine any sane person making that choice simply aren't envisioning the wide range of human diversity," said Brin, who has three children in school. "Consider what I told my family. By the very earliest date that Mars One might launch, I expect to be a spry 75-year-old whose kids are already successfully launched, and who might spend a few years doing something truly remarkable."

Even if it means dying on alien soil? Brin isn't completely sure he'd go that far, but he's willing to bet that others would.

"I think you'll find tens of thousands of people who, under those circumstances, will at least ponder it seriously," Brin said.

Click on the image to go to Kayli McArthur's Mars One application video.

Kayli McArthur: 'I'm trying to strive for something more'

McArthur, a freshman at the University of Arizona, is one of more than three dozen  18-year-olds  on Mars One's list of applicants. Ever since she applied, she's been hearing that she has her whole life ahead of her, so why would she want to leave it all behind for Mars?

"Being young doesn't make me want to do it any less because I have my whole life ahead of me," she said. "It makes it more exciting. ... I love all my friends, my guy friends, my family. It's not that I'm trying to get away. It's like I'm trying to strive for something more."

She has long dreamed of going into outer space, and she figures that her future degree in materials science would come in handy for creating the first interplanetary settlement. "Going to Mars, there are so many opportunities for that," she said.

So far, her family hasn't stood in her way. "My family jokes, like, 'Oh, Kayli, have your fun with it,'" she said. If the selection process gets more serious, she suspects she might face more resistance from her parents. But not from her grandfather.

"My grandpa is a retired three-star [general] in the Air Force," she said. "We were talking about it. I get really worked up and excited, and he was talking about it, too, and being realistic about it. He said, 'That would be so cool if you were able to do it.' ... I know my grandpa would totally support me."

Sanford Pomerantz: 'Grandpa is going to Mars!'

Pomerantz is old enough to remember when the idea of sending people into outer space seemed as far out as the idea of sending people on a one-way trip to Mars seems now. One of the books that made an impression on him in grade school was Robert Heinlein's "Red Planet: A Colonial Boy on Mars,"  which was published in 1949.

"I started as a physics major in the university, but then I got accepted into med school and changed directions," he said. At the age of 71, he's still a practicing psychiatrist in Topeka, Kan. But he's also still holding onto that boyhood dream of spaceflight.

"The Mars thing is exciting, because I hope it'll stimulate people to get interested in space. ... And I hope it has the secondary effect of stimulating science education, especially in the U.S.," he said.

Just as McArthur believes that Mars will need a materials scientist, Pomerantz believes the crew will need a psychiatrist. "Psychologically, it's going to be an interesting challenge, but human beings are very adaptable," he said. "It'll be exciting to go to a whole new world. It'll be a major step in human evolution."

If Pomerantz ends up being selected for the first Mars crew, he's likely to become not only the oldest human to head for the Red Planet, but the oldest human to go on any space mission. (The current record-holder is John Glenn , who flew on the shuttle Discovery when he was 77 years old.) For now at least, that prospect doesn't faze Pomerantz's three children and two grandchildren. "The grandchildren are excited," he said. "It's like, 'Grandpa is going to Mars!'"

Pomerantz became a certified scuba diver just two years ago, and he still expects to be in good physical and mental shape for liftoff in 2022. "Remember, age is a state of mind," he said. "Chronologlcally, I may be 71. ... But psychologically and physically, I'm definitely in my 20s. I look in the mirror and say, 'Who's that old guy?'"

One-Way Mars Trip: Aspiring Martian Colonists Land In Washington

In June 2025, the second crew of Mars One pioneers is slated to land on Mars.

WASHINGTON — A group of volunteers hoping to become the first human Martians congregated in one spot for the first time Saturday (Aug. 3) to discuss their hopes to join the Mars One mission, a project to send colonists on a one-way trip to the Red Planet.

Mars One CEO and co-founder Bas Lansdorp addressed a crowd of about 50 Mars One applicants, almost all male, in an auditorium here at George Washington University. The mood at the event, which was webcast live, was something akin to a gamer's LAN party — excited discussions blended with nerdy banter. But the purpose was serious.

Mars One co-founder Bas Lansdorp addresses the Million Martian Meeting in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 3, 2013 to discuss plans for a Mars colony mission in 2023.

"How many of you want to go on a one-way trip to Mars?" Lansdorp asked. Nearly everyone raised their hands. [ Mars One’s Red Planet Colony Project (Gallery) ]

The Mars One colony mission , announced in May 2012, aims to send humans to Mars in 2023. Yet unlike other proposed manned Mars missions, they won't be coming back.

The colonists will be sent in groups of four, and the first group will have two men and two women, hailing from four different continents. The company is accepting applications from anyone over the age of 18, through August 31. The response has been overwhelming — as of May, some 78,000  Mars colonist applications had been received.

A colony on Mars

Robert Zubrin, president and founder of the Mars Society and an advocate for manned exploration of the red planet, kicked off the meeting. Somewhat fittingly, he joined the meeting remotely via video chat.

"I think this is the most important thing going on in the world today," Zubrin said. He likened the colonization of Mars to humanity's expansion from a few tribes in a Kenyan rift valley to a global species. "Right now we have the prospect of taking this to the next step, of breaking out of planet Earth and going from a global species to a multi-planet, space-based species," he said.

Zubrin went on to explain why Mars was more suitable for a colony than the moon, and elaborated on the heavy lifter technology needed to supply such a mission, which he thinks is technically feasible. He also lamented NASA's "avoidance" of pursuing a manned Mars mission.

Afterwards, there was a screening of the film "One Way Astronaut," a documentary about some of the Mars One applicants. A YouTube trailer is available online, and the full movie is available via pay-per-view via: http://www.onewayastronaut.com/

Leaving Earth behind

Four Mars One applicants (three men and a woman) were on-hand to answer questions about their decision to apply: a married doctor, a married physics student, a hotel manager, and a graduate student in applied intelligence.

So why leave everything behind to go to Mars? "It's literally something that I've wanted forever," said Aaron Hamm, the hotel manager.

Mars One volunteers for a one-way trip to colonize Mars in 2023 speak during a panel at the Million Martian Meeting in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 3, 2013.

"You're kind of born knowing that you want to travel," added Joseph Sweeney, the graduate student who founded the Aspiring Martian Group on Facebook. Even if the risk of failing were 99 percent, Sweeney said he would go.

"I have wanted to go to space for as long as I can remember," Sara Director, one of the few female applicants, told SPACE.com.

Only 20 percent of the applicants have been female, Lansdorp said.

The meeting concluded with a talk by Lansdorp himself about the history of Mars One and his hopes for the mission. The technology exists to send people on a one-way trip to Mars , so the biggest challenge will be funding, Lansdorp told SPACE.com.

The company estimates that getting the first crew to Mars will cost about $6 billion, to be be funded primarily through a reality-TV program about the red planet's first colonists.

Skeptics of the mission abound, but they weren't present today. Technical and financial hurdles aside, many people balk at the idea of a one-way trip.

"Permanent settlement is so different from what people are used to," Lansdorp said, but "we're not going to Mars to die — we're going to Mars to live."

Mission Timeline Summary

While every mission's launch timeline is different, most follow a typical set of phases - from launch to science operations.

Launch, Cruise/Approach, Entry, Landing, and Descent, Surface Operations

Pre-launch Activities

Preparation for the mission, including pre-project planning, science definition and instrument selection, landing site selection, assembly and testing, and delivery to the launch site.

Cruise: The Trip to Mars

The interplanetary cruise phase is the period of travel from Earth to Mars and lasts about 200 days. The phase begins after the spacecraft separates from the rocket, soon after launch. Engineers on Earth keep close tabs on the mission during cruise. Major activities include:

  • Checking spacecraft health and maintenance
  • Monitoring and calibrating the spacecraft and its onboard subsystems and instruments
  • Performing attitude correction turns (slight spins to keep the antenna pointed toward Earth for communications, and to keep the solar panels pointed toward the Sun for power)
  • Conducting navigation activities, such as trajectory correction maneuvers, to determine and correct the flight path and train navigators before orbit insertion or atmospheric entry. The last three correction maneuvers are scheduled during approach.
  • Preparing for entry, descent, and landing (EDL) and surface operations, a process which includes tests of communications, including the communications to be used during EDL.

The mission is timed for launch when Earth and Mars are in good positions relative to each other for landing on Mars. That is, it takes less power to travel to Mars at this time, compared to other times when Earth and Mars are in different positions in their orbits. As Earth and Mars orbit the Sun at different speeds and distances, about once every 26 months they are aligned in a way that allows the most energy-efficient trip to Mars.

Orbiter’s Journey

The approach phase begins two months prior to Mars orbit insertion.

Illustration of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s approach phase to Mars orbit insertion.

Mars Orbit Insertion

Mars Orbit insertion is the point in the mission when a spacecraft arrives just short of Mars, firing onboard rockets to slow its speed relative to the planet, and it is captured into a long, looping orbit.

Artist's concept of Mars Odyssey’s orbit insertion at Mars.

Aerobreaking

Aerobraking is a spaceflight technique wherein an orbiting spacecraft brushes against the top of a planetary atmosphere. The friction of the atmosphere against the surface of the spacecraft slows down and lowers the craft's orbital altitude. The solar panels are used to provide the maximum drag in a symmetrical position that allows some control as the spacecraft passes through the atmosphere.

Instead of using onboard jets and propellant to adjust a spacecraft's orbit, aerobraking uses the atmosphere as both a brake and a steering wheel. The technique, however, shares more elements with sailing than with driving: successful aerobraking depends upon precise navigation, knowledge of weather, and a solid understanding of the forces the craft can withstand.

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter dips into the thin Martian atmosphere to adjust its orbit in this artist's concept illustration.

Science Operations

Orbiters begin their primary science phase when they enter science orbit and their instruments and other systems are calibrated and ready to collect science data.

Communications Relay

At the end of their primary missions, orbiters support the Mars Exploration Program by providing communications support to future Mars missions during approach, navigation, and relay. The relay orbit is similar to that of the primary science orbit. In general, this orbit allows for relay access to any point on Mars. Most locations on Mars will have contact opportunities once or twice per day.

Relay activities and other activities in support of newly arrived missions have highest priority during the relay phase. Electra, the navigation and telecommunications relay payload, can provide UHF coverage to Mars landers and rovers on the surface using its nadir-pointed (pointed straight down at the surface) antenna.

Rover/Lander’s Journey

To ensure a successful entry, descent, and landing, engineers began intensive preparations during the approach phase, about 45 days before the spacecraft entered the Martian atmosphere. It lasted until the spacecraft entered the Martian atmosphere, which extends 2,113 miles (3,522.2 kilometers) as measured from the center of the Red Planet.

This illustration shows NASA’s Mars 2020 spacecraft carrying the Perseverance rover as it approaches Mars.

Entry, Descent, and Landing

Entry, Descent, and Landing – often referred to as "EDL" – is the shortest and most intense phase of a rover mission. It begins when the spacecraft reaches the top of the Martian atmosphere, traveling at high speeds. It ends about seven minutes later, with the rover stationary on the Martian surface. To safely go from those speeds down to zero in that short amount of time, while hitting a narrow target on the surface, requires “slamming on the brakes” in a very careful, creative, and challenging way.

Instrument Checks and First Drive

After landing, when engineers first conduct tests to ensure the rover is in a "safe state."

Surface Operations

For spacecraft that land on the surface of Mars, the surface operations phase is the time when spacecraft learn about Mars through day-to-day scientific activities of the rover.

A NASA Mars rover is in a great place to search for signs of life

While we go about our daily lives on earth, a nuclear-powered robot the size of a small car is trundling around mars looking for fossils.

Perseverance’s view of ‘unsen Peak.

Unlike its predecessor Curiosity, NASA’s Perseverance rover is explicitly intended to “search for potential evidence of past life,” according to the official mission objectives .

Related Content

Jezero Crater was chosen as the landing site largely because it contains the remnants of ancient muds and other sediments deposited where a river discharged into a lake more than 3 billion years ago. We don’t know if there was life in that lake, but if there was, Perseverance might find evidence of it.

We can imagine Perseverance coming across large, well-preserved fossils of microbial colonies — perhaps resembling the cabbage-like “stromatolites” that solar-powered bacteria produced along ancient shorelines on Earth. Fossils like these would be big enough to see clearly with the rover’s cameras, and might also contain chemical evidence for ancient life, which the rover’s spectroscopic instruments could detect.

But even in such wildly optimistic scenarios, we wouldn’t be completely sure we’d found fossils until we could see them under the microscope in laboratories on Earth. That’s because it’s possible for geological features produced by non-biological processes to resemble fossils . These are referred as pseudofossils. That’s why Perseverance isn’t just looking for fossils on site: it’s collecting samples. If all goes well, about 30 specimens will be returned to Earth by a follow-on mission, which is being planned in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).

Earlier this month, NASA announced that a particularly intriguing sample, the 24th for Perseverance and informally named “Comet Geyser,” had joined the rover’s growing collection. This one comes from an outcrop called Bunsen Peak, part of a rocky deposit called the Margin Unit that’s close to the crater’s edge.

This rock unit may have formed along the shoreline of the ancient lake . Rover instruments have shown that the Bunsen Peak sample is dominated by carbonate minerals (the main constituent of rocks like limestone, chalk and travertine on Earth).

The little carbonate grains are cemented together with pure silica (similar to opal or quartz). NASA’s press release quotes Ken Farley, project scientist for Perseverance, saying: “This is the kind of rock we had hoped to find when we decided to investigate Jezero Crater.”

But what’s so special about carbonates? And what makes the Bunsen Peak sample particularly exciting from the point of view of astrobiology, the study of life in the universe? Well, first, this rock may have formed under conditions that we would recognise as habitable: able to support the metabolism of life as we know it.

One ingredient in habitability is the availability of water. Carbonate and silica minerals can both form by direct precipitation from liquid water. Sample 24 may have precipitated from the lake water under temperatures and chemical conditions compatible with life, although there may be other possibilities that need to be tested. In fact, carbonate minerals are puzzlingly rare on Mars, which has always had plenty of carbon dioxide available.

In the wet environments of early Mars, that CO₂ should have dissolved in water and reacted to form carbonate minerals. Analysis of Bunsen Peak and of Sample 24 when it is sent to Earth, may eventually help us solve this mystery. One face of the outcrop has some interesting rough and streaky textures which could clarify its origins, but they are hard to interpret without more data.

Second, we know from examples on Earth that ancient sedimentary carbonates can yield wonderful fossils. Such fossils include stromatolites composed of carbonate crystals precipitated directly by bacteria. Perseverance hasn’t seen convincing examples of these.

There are some concentric circular patterns in the Margin Unit but they are almost certainly an effect of weathering. Even where stromatolites are absent, however, some ancient carbonates on Earth contain fossil colonies of microbial cells, which form ghostly sculptures where the original cellular structures have been replaced by minerals.

The small grain size of the “Comet Geyser” sample indicates a higher potential to preserve delicate fossils. Under some conditions, fine-grained carbonates can even retain organic matter—the modified remains of the fats, pigments, and other compounds that make up living things. The silica cement makes such preservation more likely: silica is generally harder, more inert, and less permeable than carbonate, and can protect fossil microbes and organic molecules inside rocks from chemical and physical alteration over billions of years.

When my colleagues and I wrote a scientific paper called “ A Field Guide to Finding Fossils on Mars ” in preparation for this mission, we explicitly recommended sampling fine-grained, silica-cemented rocks for these reasons. Of course, to crack open this sample and explore its secrets, we need to bring it back to Earth.

An independent review recently criticised NASA’s plans for the return of samples from Mars as too risky, too slow, and too expensive. Modified mission architectures are now being evaluated to meet these challenges. In the meantime, hundreds of brilliant scientists and engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California lost their jobs because the U.S. Congress effectively reduced funding for Mars sample return by failing to commit the necessary level of support.

Mars sample return remains NASA’s highest planetary science priority and is strongly supported by the planetary science community around the world. The samples from Perseverance may revolutionise our view of life in the universe. Even if they don’t contain fossils or biomolecules, they will fuel decades of research and give future generations a completely new view of Mars. Let’s hope NASA and the U.S. government can live up to the name of their rover, and persevere.

NASA Seeks ‘Hail Mary’ for Its Mars Rocks Return Mission

The agency will seek new ideas for its Mars Sample Return program, expected to be billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule.

A concept illustration showing five spacecraft on or just above the Martian surface. Two are on the ground while the other three include a satellite, a rocket and a helicopter.

By Kenneth Chang

Kenneth Chang has reported on almost every NASA mission to Mars during the 21st century.

The cost of a proposed NASA mission to gather rocks on Mars and return them to Earth is spiraling upward and slipping further into the future. So on Monday, space agency officials asked for ideas on simplifying the mission and trimming its price tag.

“The bottom line is that $11 billion is too expensive,” Bill Nelson, the NASA administrator, said during a news conference on Monday. “And not returning samples until 2040 is unacceptably too long.”

The mission, known as Mars Sample Return, is central to the search for signs that life may have existed on the red planet. The idea is to bring samples of rock and soil back to Earth so that scientists can prod and poke at them using their most sophisticated tools.

NASA had hoped that Mars Sample Return would cost $5 billion to $7 billion, and that the rocks would arrive on Earth in 2033.

But last fall, a panel that reviewed the mission concluded that the cost was likely to be much higher, from $8 to $11 billion. NASA officials said on Monday that after they looked over the review, they agreed with that cost estimate, and that, given budget constraints, the current Mars Sample Return mission would not be able to deliver the rocks before 2040.

On Tuesday, NASA plans to issue a “request for information” seeking alternative plans from aerospace companies as well as experts within NASA, with proposals to be due on May 17. Of those, NASA would finance several of the proposals, with studies finishing later this year. Then NASA would have to decide its next step.

“We’re going to need to go off to some very innovative new possibilities for design and certainly leave no stone unturned,” said Nicola Fox, the associate administrator for NASA’s science mission directorate.

At the same time, she said she hoped for “traditional, tried-and-true architectures” that would reduce the risk of delay and failure.

“This is the Hail Mary,” Casey Dreier, the chief of space policy at the Planetary Society, a nonprofit organization that supports space exploration, said in an interview. Mr. Dreier said he had thought that NASA would simply announce a delay, which would reduce the amount it was spending on the mission in a given year, while adding to the final price tag.

“That would have been an easier way, from our perspective, to preserve the plan as it existed, to add certainty where there’s uncertainty,” Mr. Dreier said.

The first phase of Mars Sample Return is already underway. NASA’s Perseverance rover , which landed on Mars in 2021, has been drilling and collecting cylindrical samples of rock and soil in the Jezero Crater , which contains an ancient river delta.

The current Mars Sample Return plan, devised by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, involves a complex choreography . First, a new robotic spacecraft would land near the Perseverance rover, which would then hand over about 30 of its rock samples. Those would then be launched into orbit around Mars. Yet another spacecraft, from the European Space Agency, would retrieve those samples, take them back to Earth and drop them off within a small disk-shaped vehicle that would land in a Utah desert.

To undertake a mission that would move more quickly and at a lower cost, one idea might be to leave some of the samples behind on Mars. That would reduce the size and complexity of the spacecraft needed.

If scientists were forced to choose which rocks they want most, “I think that will be some very, very lively and very exciting scientific chatter,” Dr. Fox said.

In February, Mr. Dreier wrote an essay about whether NASA could turn to Elon Musk’s SpaceX for a cheaper robotic Mars Sample Return mission. SpaceX’s mammoth Starship rocket is being designed with the goal of sending people to Mars .

“The answer is almost certainly ‘no,’” Mr. Dreier wrote then. “At least, not anytime soon.”

But if Mr. Musk and SpaceX are interested, NASA is now willing to listen. Mr. Dreier said that SpaceX would need to solve numerous technical challenges, including how it could produce propellants for the return trip.

“Is this getting to be less, or more expensive and time-consuming and risky than the original J.P.L. concept?” Mr. Dreier said, referring to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s plan.

SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Dreier said that, as an optimist, perhaps Mr. Nelson was right and that someone would offer a better solution.

But he added that NASA’s announcement on Monday could be a pretext for canceling the mission, or trying to convince Congress that it indeed needed $11 billion.

“It may just be that people don’t want to accept that that’s what it costs,” he said. “I guess that’s one of the things we’ll find out.”

Former Cardinals GM Opens Up on Rehab Trip, Mental Health

Former Arizona Cardinals GM Steve Keim discussed his struggles with mental health with NFL insider Jay Glazer.

  • Author: Donnie Druin

In this story:

ARIZONA -- It's been over a year since former Arizona Cardinals GM Steve Keim was leading the organization, though much has changed since on both sides.

The Cardinals hit the reset button after 2023, firing head coach Kliff Kingsbury and seeing Keim step down due to personal/health reasons.

Now, Arizona's led by GM Monti Ossenfort and HC Jonathan Gannon. Kingsbury departed for USC for one season before recently accepting a job as Washington Commanders offensive coordinator while Keim has done some studio analysis work and has yet to rejoin a role in any front office.

Keim recently appeared on the "Unbreakable with Jay Glazer Podcast" and opened up on his mental health after checking himself into rehab while still with the Cardinals:

"Leading up to it, I had enough people - again, friends, family, coworkers, Michael Bidwill even came, our [Arizona Cardinals] owner came and sat with me multiple times and said, 'hey, you just don't seem like yourself' and I didn't know what it was," Keim said.

"But I also didn't try to hide from it. I told him straight up, 'I'm not doing good. I don't know what's wrong with me.' And you know, he was great, supportive, here for you. But at the same time again, there's a difference between acknowledging and saying, 'Hey, I don't know what's wrong with me and I'm not perfect' versus 'I really need some help'. Again, that at the treatment center is the number one thing that they emphasize is making sure that if you have problems out there, I don't care who it is, whatever your problems may be in life, ask for help. That that's the vulnerability that's important."

The Crab Nebula, the result of a bright supernova explosion seen by Chinese and other astronomers in the year 1054, is 6,500 light-years from Earth. At its center is a neutron star, a super-dense star produced by the supernova. As it rotates at about 30 times per second, its beam of radiation passes over the Earth every orbit, like a cosmic lighthouse. As the young pulsar slows down, large amounts of energy are injected into its surroundings. In particular, a high-speed wind of matter and anti-matter particles plows into the surrounding nebula, creating a shock wave that forms the expanding ring seen in the movie. Jets from the poles of the pulsar spew X-ray emitting matter and antimatter particles in a direction perpendicular to the ring. This image show the X-ray data from Chandra along with infrared data from the Webb space telescope.

NASA has selected a new crew of four volunteers to participate in a simulated mission to Mars within a habitat at the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Jason Lee, Stephanie Navarro, Shareef Al Romaithi, and Piyumi Wijesekara will step into the agency’s Human Exploration Research Analog, or HERA , on Friday, May 10. Once inside, the team will live and work like astronauts for 45 days. The crew will exit the facility on June 24 after they “return” to Earth. Jose Baca and Brandon Kent are this mission’s alternate crew members.

HERA enables scientists to study how crew members adapt to isolation, confinement, and remote conditions before NASA sends astronauts on deep space missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Crew members will carry out scientific research and operational tasks throughout their simulated mission to the Red Planet, including a “walk” on Mars’s surface using virtual reality. They will also experience increasing communication delays lasting up to five minutes each way with Mission Control Center as they “near” Mars.

This crew is the second group of volunteers to participate in a simulated Mars mission in HERA this year. The most recent crew completed its HERA mission on March 18. Two other missions will follow this year, with the final HERA crew slated to wrap up on Dec. 20.

In a first for HERA, one crew member, Shareef Al Romaithi, hails from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and will participate in the mission through a partnership between NASA and the UAE’s Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC).

As with the previous HERA mission this year, NASA’s Human Research Program is conducting 18 human health studies during the mission. The experiments will evaluate the physiological, behavioral, and psychological responses of crew members in an environment similar to what astronauts will face on a trip to Mars. Seven of these studies are collaborations with the MBRSC and the European Space Agency (ESA). Insights gleaned from the studies will allow researchers to develop and test strategies aimed at helping astronauts overcome obstacles on long missions deep into space.

The primary crew of the upcoming mission is:

Jason Lee portrait

Lee holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and master’s and doctorate degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. His graduate research focused on manufacturing processes involving heat transfer and the characterization of heat shielding materials. He completed a postdoctoral degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, studying high-strength nanofibers.

Lee lives in Boston. In his spare time, he enjoys running, martial arts, chess, and indoor rock climbing. He also likes to watch movies and plays, try new cuisines, spend time with friends, and visit his nephew and nieces.

Stephanie Navarro

In addition to HERA, NASA’s Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA ), a series of analog missions that will simulate year-long stays on the surface of Mars, is informing the agency’s efforts in preparing for future human Mars missions.

HERA and CHAPEA complement each other by assessing human health and performance in isolated and confined conditions that simulate spaceflight operations in the remote exploration environments of the Moon and Mars, including communication delays and environmental stressors.  Both analogs collect data on humans living and working in separate habitats at NASA Johnson.

NASA’s Human Research Program

NASA’s  Human Research Program , or HRP, pursues the best methods and technologies to support safe, productive human space travel. Through science conducted in laboratories, ground-based analogs, and the International Space Station, HRP scrutinizes how spaceflight affects human bodies and behaviors. Such research drives HRP’s  quest  to innovate ways that keep astronauts healthy and mission-ready as space travel expands to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Travel to Mars The minimum distance between the orbits of Mars and Earth from 2014 to 2061, measured in astronomical units. The energy needed for transfer between planetary orbits, or delta-v, is lowest at intervals fixed by the synodic period. For Earth-Mars trips, the period is every 26 months (2 years, 2 months), so missions are typically planned to coincide with one of these launch periods.

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Dear Mrs. van den Enden, Sorry to hear that your trip did not meet your expectations. Before the trip I had extensive contact with your husband regarding the accommodations, it is therefore regrettable to hear that these have not been entirely satisfactory. I have tried to reach you by telephone and have also contacted you by email. Here I have shown that if you want to share your further feedback, I would like to hear from you. Moscow Travel Guide

Despite the Soviet past, today’s Moscow is a dynamic, cutting-edge city – and the most populous in Europe. Well-heeled Muscovites flaunt their wealth by sipping Champagne with sushi at elite restaurants and shopping for designer labels at frighteningly expensive boutiques. Meanwhile, a growing middle-class has seen a proliferation of hip bars and trendy cultural centres.

While the Russian capital has striven to move on, recent tensions with the West have stirred up memories of the past. Moscow has previously led the way with protests against Vladimir Putin, but even with the tumbling ruble and economic sanctions, his popularity remains strong.

This doesn’t make Russia a no-go area, and Moscow – with its cosmopolitan, globe-trotting denizens – is not the formidable crucible often depicted. In summer, temperatures soar and the city’s vast parklands flourish. The historic Gorky Park received a complete makeover in 2012, installing free Wi-Fi and even a beach, while the Soviet behemoth that was the Rossiya Hotel has been demolished to make way for an ambitious central park.

Before that project comes to fruition, there is Red Square to marvel at, not least the mind-boggling St Basil’s Cathedral. Built by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, its multi-coloured domes and acid-trip patterns seem to defy logic. Nearby is the 14th-century Kremlin and seat of the tsars.

Indeed architecture is one of the city’s main attractions, especially for aficionados of Soviet buildings. All too many have been destroyed to make way for gleaming 21st-century skyscrapers, but Stalin’s unmistakable Seven Sisters still stand tall against the modern towers.

The city is naturally keen to celebrate its great writers, composers and artists too. This sophisticated city boasts world-class institutions like the Bolshoi Theatre, the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.

As for nightlife, the city is becoming increasingly hedonistic – whether jazz, rock or vodka is your thing, there are plenty of options. Even the culinary circuit has come on leaps and bounds, though an evening at one of the city’s growing stable of world-class restaurants requires considerable investment. This is, after all, a capital of oligarchs.

Top 5: Destinations fit for spies

Live out your secret agent dreams while you perfect your plotting with these spy-inspired destinations

Book Accommodation

Featured hotels, izmailovo (gamma-delta).

Constructed to accommodate visitors to the 1980 Olympics, the concrete towers of the Izmailovo boast a staggering 8,000 rooms. Institutional in atmosphere, and located far out in the northern suburbs, the hotel is handy for the enormous Izmaylovo Market and has decent city centre links. There are several onsite restaurants and in-room Wi-Fi is available too.

Peking Hotel

Built in 1956 as a little sister to Stalin's Seven Sister skyscrapers, and intended as post-war headquarters for the secret police, Moscow's Peking Hotel is a heritage hotel with a small 'h', in a good location just northwest of the centre. Although slightly old-fashioned, its 130 rooms are comfortable enough, with satellite TV and en-suite bathrooms.

Warsaw Hotel

Although its location may not be one of Moscow's most picturesque, the Warsaw Hotel is convenient for Gorky Park. Considering the quality of the competition, this is one of the best cheap options in the city, with clean and comfortable rooms, albeit in a rather dated style. Wi-Fi is complimentary and the Oktyabrskaya Metro station is right next door.

Golden Apple

A boutique hotel on a refreshingly human scale, the Golden Apple offers imaginative styling and a personal touch that many 5-star hotels lack. Behind the baroque facade, its minimalist rooms are cosy, and there's an onsite restaurant and an open-plan bar too. Staff speak excellent English and there's Wi-Fi access, a gym and a sauna.

Historical Hotel Sovietsky

In the 1950s, Joseph Stalin decreed that the famous Yar restaurant should be upgraded to a hotel and the Historical Hotel Sovietsky was born. It quickly became a showcase for the image of sophistication that the Soviet government wished to present to the world, and its 107 rooms still conjures up the nostalgia of this period in history.

Hotel Danilovsky

It's hard to imagine a more atmospheric place to stay than the 12-century precincts of the historic Danilovsky Monastery. Set amidst chapels and gardens, the hotel is a modern construction, but the rooms are comfortable and all have a view of the stately monastery buildings. There's a sauna and bar onsite too.

Men’s Tennis Team on a Quest for First Patriot League Title

Tournament top-seed terriers travel to west point for four-day tournament this weekend.

Charles Moore (COM’24)

Last year, the Boston University men’s tennis team reached its first-ever Patriot League championship match, but fell 4-0 to then top-seeded Navy. This year, the Terriers have posted a perfect 6-0 record in conference play and are the No. 1 seed entering this weekend’s four-day conference tournament at Army West Point.

The Terriers begin play in the tournament quarterfinal on Friday at Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. Each round will stage nine possible matches. Three doubles matches are played first, with the school that wins two of three clinching the round’s first point. Then, a possible six singles matches will be played—each singles match is worth one additional point. The school earning four total points will win the matchday.

Dejan Stankovic (Wheelock’08,’11,’15), men’s tennis head coach, says he is confident about the program’s chances of capturing its first-ever Patriot League title.

“I know we’re really good,” Stankovic says. “For other teams to challenge us, they’re going to have to be at their best. I am definitely not underestimating the competition, but I think we’re playing really well, so I’m feeling pretty good going into this tournament.”

Last year’s third-place regular season finish was the first top-3 Patriot League finish for the BU men’s tennis program since 2016, earning them their first-ever PL championship match appearance. The Terriers have not won a conference championship since 1996, when they played in the America East conference.

“We haven’t won a conference tournament in decades,” Stankovic says. “So maybe there’s some type of a target on our back, but [we have] more of a sense that we’ve got a really good shot.”

Cocaptain Owen Voigt (Questrom’24) says he’s seen the program improve from a 3-18 record in 2021 to this year’s 18-7 finish. He says that while the roster hasn’t changed significantly during his four years at BU, the team’s confidence has more than doubled.

“We’ve had pretty much the same guys for the past three years,” Voigt says. I think our confidence in ourselves and our teammates has grown a lot. We all believe in each other. I am the oldest guy on the team, and I’ve seen it all—I haven’t been on a team where it was like this before, where we all just believe in ourselves. Every single match that we play, we know that we are the better players.”

Photo: A college tennis player wearing a red Boston University shirt and white shorts hits a tennis ball at a recent match

Headlining the Terriers best finish during their Patriot League tenure is six-time PL Player of the Week Corey Craig (CAS’26). The reigning PL Rookie of the Year went undefeated in his four most recent matches, against Lehigh on April 12 and Army-West Point on April 14.

Although Craig has set the Patriot League record for weekly accolades in a single season, Voigt and Stankovic agree that the team’s biggest asset has been its willingness to come together—a rarity in such an individual sport as tennis.

“It can be pretty difficult to get a group of 8 to 10 individuals to work together towards one goal, but I’ve never seen a team where we’re as together as we are on this team,” Voigt says. “What’s different is that we all believe in each other. I tell the guys, and what our coaches say is: everybody can bring value during a tennis match, no matter if you have a racket in your hands or not.”

Stankovic lauds his team, but reserves special commendation for cocaptain Voigt.

“Owen is one of those guys that just gets the team going,” the coach says. “He’s so selfless—he’ll do anything for the team to win. And I feel like you can’t find a player like that too often. So the culture of our team is a lot better because we have a captain who demonstrates that and walks the walk every single day.”

Voigt says he’s focused on getting his teammates prepped for a successful weekend in West Point. “I’m just just trying to get everybody excited,” he says. “This year, we have a target on our back, which we haven’t had in the past couple of years. Being the number one seed and beating all of these top teams already this season and going to the tournament undefeated, everybody wants another shot at us. So we have to be ready for other teams to punch us back.

“But I think that we will be able to handle any team that comes our way. So I’m just getting everybody to be super confident in themselves and making sure that we’ll be able to work together over this next week to bring it home.”

The Boston University men’s tennis team will begin play in the 2024 Patriot League Championship Tournament on Friday, April 26, at Army West Point’s Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. Live statistics will be posted on goterriers.com and updates will be posted live via Twitter @BUGameDay and @TerrierTennis.
