Meenakshi Amman Temple –  2 Day Madurai Itinerary

The famous Meenakshi Temple is for most people, the single most important reason for visiting Madurai. The temple is synonymous with Madurai, and the town has developed around the temple. The main deities of the temple are Meenakshi (Parvati) and Sundareshwara (Shiva) .

The original temple structure was built in the 12th century. A distinctive feature of the temple is its 14 Gopurams (Towers), of which the tallest stretch to a height of 170 feet. The temple has more than 33,000 sculptures and the roof is beautifully painted. One of the features not to be missed is the 1,000 pillars hall.

Koodal Azhagar Temple – 2 Day Madurai Itinerary

Koodal Azhagar Temple is dedicated to the Hindu God, Lord Vishnu . The temple is constructed with elements of Dravidian architecture and dates back to the 8th century. The temple complex spans an area of about 2 acres.

A unique aspect of the temple is that the deity can be seen in three postures inside the sanctum sanctorum. There is an image of the deity in a standing position , one in a sitting position , and the other in a reclining position .

This is a sacred temple dedicated to Murugan , also known as Subrahmanya , or Kartikeya , the son of Shiva and Parvati. The temple dates back to the 6th century and is believed to have been built by the Pandya kings. The temple is one of the six sacred abodes of Murugan in Tamil Nadu that finds mention in ancient Tamil Sangam literature .

After my trip around Kerala , I traveled to Madurai. I have to admit, I had never heard of Madurai before, but I am very glad I went!

Why should you travel to Madurai?

Madurai is an energetic, ancient city in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city’s skyline is dominated by the 14 impressive and colorful gateway towers of the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which is a major pilgrimage site, attracting visitors from all over India and beyond.

If you love visiting cities with a rich history, vibrant culture, delicious food, and welcoming people, Madurai deserves to be on your list.

Things to Do in Madurai

Madurai, because of its rich history, has been nicknamed Athens of the East .

You could spend days, if not weeks roaming the streets, talking to the locals, and admiring the incredible buildings.

But, you probably won’t have weeks to explore Madurai. That’s why in this article I will share with you the main things to do in Madurai and the highlights of this city, so that you know exactly what the best tourist places in Madurai are and what else makes Madurai worth visiting.

10 Places to Visit in Madurai

1. meenakshi amman temple.

For most people, this temple is the main reason to travel to Madurai .

Now let’s start with the name of this temple because that is where it gets confusing. If you are doing some research about tourist places in Madurai, you might find a wide variety of names for the temple: Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple, Meenakshi Temple, Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, Meenakshi-Sundareshwara Temple or Meenakshi Madurai Temple. They are all talking about the exact same temple.

This historic Hindu temple in the center of Madurai is one of the oldest and largest temples in India .

The enormous temple complex extends over an area of 65,000m² (700,000 square feet) and was first constructed 2000 years ago. Most of the present structure, however, was rebuilt after the 14th century, and further repaired, renovated and expanded in the 17th century.

The temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswara, who is an incarnation of Lord Shiva.

As a non-Hindu I find Hinduism a complex religion with all the different gods and different forms or incarnations of gods. I would therefore highly recommend getting a guide when visiting the temple . Plenty of guides will offer their services inside or around the temple and that will really teach you a lot about the temple, its history, and Hinduism.

The temple is open from 5:00 am – 12:30 pm and from 4 pm – 10:00 pm.

It attracts over 15,000 visitors per day, so expect it to be crowded and allocate enough time because the temple really is massive!

Entering Madurai’s Famous Temple

Both the dress code and rules regarding what you can take into the temple are very strict (this was different in the past).

As a woman, wearing a dress or skirt that just covers the knees is not enough . Make sure it covers your entire legs and wear something that covers your shoulders. With men they seem more lenient but please dress conservatively.

You are not allowed to take pictures inside the temple and you are also not allowed to take your phone or any type of electronics inside the temple. That includes power banks, charging cables, thumb drives… ANYTHING!

Two of my friends were also stopped for carrying soft drinks, cigarettes, and a lighter.

So my advice, since you can securely store your belongings at the entrance, store everything there. The last thing you want is to stand in line for half an hour to then be sent back by security because they found something in your purse or pocket that they didn’t like. You will also have to leave your shoes at this same place.

There are certain parts of the temple that can only be accessed by Hindus. These parts are clearly marked, in English.

2. Gandhi Memorial Museum

There are actually several Gandhi museums in India and this might not be the most famous one, but it definitely is one of the main places to visit in Madurai.

Among the exhibits at the museum you can find the blood-stained garment worn by Gandhi when he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse and a letter he wrote to Adolf Hitler addressing him as ‘Dear Friend’.

It’s an interesting museum if you want to learn more about who Mahatma Gandhi was and what he did during his life.

The building that houses the Gandhi Memorial Museum is a historic palace built around 1670 , belonging to Rani Mangammal of the Nayak Dynasty.

3. Thirumalai Nayak Temple Palace

This beautiful palace was built in 1636 by King Thirumalai Nayak, who ruled Madurai from 1623–1659.

It is famous for the stuccowork on its domes and impressive arches . Unfortunately only part of the palace remains, but it’s worth a visit and I wish I would have had time to see their daily light show.

There is a daily sound and light show in English and in Tamil. The one in English starts at 6:45 pm. 

4. Elu Kadal Street

Elu Kadal Street is an ancient street in the center of Madurai.

Elu Kadal means “Affluence of Seven Seas” and the street comes with an interesting legend.

Legend has it that Kanchanamala, the mother of Goddess Meenakshi wished to take a sacred bath in seven seas. When Lord Siva heard about this he miraculously brought water from seven seas to Madurai and formed a tank in this street to house the water, to help his mother-in-law take her bath.

Today there is still a Siva temple, on the western side of the tank, believed to have been worshipped by Kanchanamala and her husband Malayathuvasan.

On my trip to Madurai I took a walking tour of the city with Storytrails who told me this and many other interesting stories about Madurai.

Because Madurai’s history is so rich and complex, I can highly recommend a guided tour!

5. Temple Cars

There are two big and impressively decorated wooden temple cars at the center of the East Masi Street. The cars are mainly used in processions to carry images of gods and goddesses.

They are incredible works of art and if you go on a guided tour you will learn a lot about the history and the usage of the cars, plus the different gods and celebrations.

But even if you don’t, check out these cars just to see how big they are and imagine them being dragged around the city in a procession… Very impressive!

6. Ten Pillar Lane

These are ten pillars in a lane (hence the name), on the northern side of the Thirumalai Nayak Palace.

The pillars were part of the palace. They are believed to be part of the courtyard of a section of the palace created as the king’s younger brother’s residence.

It’s a small sight but worth a visit because of its historic value. 

7. Mariamman Teppakulam

This is a famous temple tank located about 4 km east of the Meenakshi Amman Temple.

Literally, Teppakulam means ‘temple pond’. It is mainly used for devotional festivals and is famous for the colorful Float Festival held here around January/February.

When I visited there was no water in the tank but most of the year there is. Again, if you want to learn more about the history of all of these sights in Madurai exploring the city with a guide is highly recommended.

8. Goripalayam Dargah

Although Madurai is predominantly a Hindu city, there is also a notable Muslim and Christian influence .

The Goripalayam Dargah or Goripalayam Mosque is the largest mosque in Madurai. It contains two graves (tombs) of Sultans of Yemen and the invisible grave of Khaja Syed Sultan Habibuddin Razi, also known as Ghaibi Sulthan, who came to India to spread Islam.

It is said that the mosque was built by Thirumalai Nayak for his Muslim subjects.

9. St. Mary’s Cathedral

This church was originally built in 1841 as a small chapel for about 30 Christian families in the area.

It received the status of cathedral in 1969 and is now the seat of the Madurai Roman Catholic Archdiocese.

10. Jain Caves

Another religion you will find in Madurai, if you look closely, is Jainism .

Jainism is an ancient Indian religion that teaches that the way to liberation and bliss is to live a life of harmlessness and renunciation. There is still a small minority in Madurai that practices Jainism.

If you want to know more about Jainism I suggest planning a guided tour to one of the Jain caves around Madurai.

Most caves are located on the periphery of the city and involve a short hike up a rocky hill, giving you a good view of Madurai.

I visited the Jain Cave listed on Google maps as ‘Jain Sculptures’, north-east of the city. Another popular location is Keelakuilkudi, at the foot of the hill Samanamalai.

Shopping in Madurai

You’ll find a wide range of shops throughout Madurai and if you are looking for souvenirs, clothes, jewelry, etc. you will enjoy shopping in Madurai.

But apart from all the shops you see when you are exploring the city, I want to highlight a few specific places worth visiting during your trip to Madurai.

1. Flower & Vegetable Markets

Madurai is known for the trade of flowers and vegetables and is often called the city of markets.

So a visit to a market, and especially the large Mattuthavani flower market (also referred to simply as the ‘Madurai Flower Market’), is a must.

It’s a great look into local life in Madurai.

2. Shopping Malls in Madurai

Madurai has two main shopping malls: Vishaal De Mal and Milan’em Mall.

Both malls offer a wide range of modern shops, similar to malls around the world but with many regional and national brands. 

What to Buy in Madurai

Madurai is a hub for textiles and jewelry, making those the two obvious choices for what to buy in Madurai.

If you are looking for something unique, then get yourself a Sungudi Sari. Madurai Sungudi is a cotton fabric of Madurai, which is an exclusive textile product traditionally produced using tie dye method by people from the Saurashtra region who migrated to Madurai in the 16th century.

But, you will also find plenty of “classic souvenirs”, from keychains to T-shirts, with plenty of options that are locally made.

Brassware is another popular thing to buy in Madurai.

And, with Madurai being nicknamed ‘the jasmine capital of India’, buying jasmine ( malli ) is also a favorite of many visitors.

A Food Tour in Madurai

One of the things I love when traveling is trying all the local food.

Foodies Day Out offers a great food tour in Madurai, taking you to some hidden gems to taste Madurai’s delicious food.

But, whether you join their tour or not, definitely try some idli (Madurai’s comfort food), a dosa (one of my favorite things to eat in India) and a Tamil style thali served on a banana leaf.

I was surprised to see that the food in Madurai is quite different from the food in neighboring Kerala . That’s definitely one thing I love about India: it’s such a big and diverse country that every part you travel to offers a different experience!

One of the oldest cities in South Asia, Madurai, on the banks of the River Vaigai, has been an important centre of worship and commerce for as long as there has been civilization in south India. It was often described as “the Athens of the East” and indeed, when the Greek ambassador Megasthenes visited in 302 BC, he wrote of its splendour and described its queen, Pandai, as “a daughter of Herakles”. The Roman geographer Strabo also wrote of Madurai, complaining that the city’s silk, pearls and spices were draining the imperial coffers of Rome. It was this lucrative trade that enabled the Pandyan dynasty to erect the mighty Meenakshi-Sundareshwarar temple. Although now surrounded by a sea of modern concrete cubes, the massive gopuras of this vast complex, writhing with multicoloured mythological figures and crowned by golden finials, remain the greatest man-made spectacle of the south. No fewer than 15,000 people pass through its gates every day and on Fridays (sacred to the goddess Meenakshi) numbers swell to more than 25,000, while the temple’s ritual life spills out into the streets in an almost ceaseless round of festivals and processions.

Although considerably enlarged and extended through the ages, the overall layout of Madurai’s old city, south of the River Vaigai, has remained largely unchanged since the first centuries AD, comprising a series of concentric squares centred on the massive Meenakshi Temple. Aligned with the cardinal points, the street plan forms a giant mandala, whose sacred properties are activated during the regular mass clockwise circumambulations of the central temple. North of the river, Madurai becomes markedly more mundane and irregular. You’re only likely to cross the Vaigai to reach the city’s more expensive hotels or the Gandhi Museum.

Enclosed by a roughly rectangular 6m-high wall, in the manner of a fortified palace, and with modern security measures to match, the Sri Meenakshi-Sundareshwarar Temple is one of the largest temple complexes in India. Much of it was constructed during the Nayak period between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, but certain parts are very much older.

For the first-time visitor, confronted with a confusing maze of shrines, sculptures and colonnades, and unaware of the logic employed in their arrangement, it’s very easy to get disorientated. Quite apart from the estimated 33,000 sculptures to arrest your attention, the life of the temple is absolutely absorbing, with the endless round of puja ceremonies, loud nagaswaram and tavil music, weddings, brahmin boys under religious instruction in the Vedas, the prostrations of countless devotees and the glittering market stalls inside the east entrance. If you’re braving the heat of late spring, check when the stunning Chithirai festival is taking place to celebrate the marriage of Meenakshi and Sundareshwarar (Shiva), marked by vivid chariot processions. Even if you’re not lucky enough to see a festival procession, something is always going on to make this one of the most compelling places in Tamil Nadu . Approximately fifty priests live and work here, recognizable by the white dhotis tied between their legs and silk cloth worn around their waists. You can roam freely within the complex but the main shrines can only be entered by Hindus.

Meenakshi: the goddess with the fish-shaped eyes

The goddess Meenakshi of Madurai emerged from the flames of a sacrificial fire as a 3-year-old child, in answer to the Pandyan king Malayadvaja’s prayer for a son. The king, not only surprised to see a female, was also horrified that she had three breasts. In every other respect, she was beautiful, as her name, Meenakshi (“fish-eyed”), suggests; fish-shaped eyes are classic images of desirability in Indian love poetry. Dispelling his concern, a mysterious voice told the king that Meenakshi would lose the third breast on meeting her future husband.

In the absence of a male heir, the adult Meenakshi succeeded her father as Pandyan monarch. With the aim of world domination, she embarked on a series of successful battles, culminating in the defeat of Shiva’s armies in his Himalayan abode, Mount Kailash. Shiva then appeared on the battlefield and upon seeing him, Meenakshi immediately lost her third breast thus fulfilling the prophecy. They then travelled to Madurai, where they were duly married. They assumed a dual role – firstly as king and queen of the Pandya kingdom, with Shiva assuming the title Sundara Pandya, and secondly as the presiding deities of the Madurai temple, into which they subsequently disappeared.

Today, their shrines in Madurai are the focal point of a hugely popular fertility cult centred on their “coupling”. The temple priests maintain that this ensures the preservation and regeneration of the universe, so every night the pair are placed in Sundareshwarar’s bedchamber – but not before Meenakshi’s nose ring is carefully removed so that in the heat of passion it won’t cut her husband. However, fidelity is never taken for granted, and has to be ritually tested each year when the beautiful goddess Cellattamman is brought to Sundareshwarar “to have her powers renewed”. After she is spurned, she flies into a fury that can only be placated with the sacrifice of a buffalo.

At one time, the huge Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam tank in the southeast of town, with its constant supply of water, flowing via underground channels from the Vaigai, was always full. Nowadays it is only filled during the spectacular Teppam floating festival (Jan/Feb), when pilgrims take boats out to the goddess shrine in the centre. Before their marriage ceremony, Shiva and Meenakshi are brought in procession to the tank, where they float on a beautifully illuminated raft pulled by devotees, which encircles the shrine. The boat trip is the overture to a seduction that reaches its passionate conclusion later that night in the temple. This traditionally makes the Teppam the most auspicious time of year for young couples to get married.

Today only a quarter of the seventeenth-century Thirumalai Nayak Palace, located 1.5km southeast of the Meenakshi Temple, survives. Much of it was dismantled by Thirumalai’s grandson, Chockkanatha Nayak, and used to build a new palace at Tiruchirapalli. The remains were renovated in 1858 by Lord Napier, then governor of Madras, and once again in 1971 for the Tamil World Conference. The palace originally consisted of two residential sections, a theatre, private temple, harem, royal bandstand, armoury and gardens. The Palace Museum in an adjacent hall includes unlabelled Pandyan, Jain and Buddhist sculptures, terracottas and an eighteenth-century print of the palace in a dilapidated state. A nightly sound-and-light show (in both English and Tamil) recalls the story of the Tamil epic, Shilipaddikaram, and the history of the Nayaks.

Across the Vaigai, 5km northeast of the centre near the Central Telegraph Office, stands Tamukkam, the seventeenth-century multi pillared and arched palace of Queen Rani Mangammal. Built to accommodate such regal entertainment as elephant fights, Tamukkam was taken over by the British, used as a courthouse and collector’s office, and in 1955 became home to the Gandhi and Government museums. The Gandhi Memorial Museum charts the history of India since the landing of the first Europeans, viewed in terms of the freedom struggle. The perspective is national, but where appropriate, reference is made to the role played by Tamils. Wholeheartedly critical of the British, it states its case clearly and simply, quoting the condemnation by Englishman John Sullivan of his fellow countrymen’s insulting treatment of Indians. One chilling artefact, kept in a room painted black, is the bloodstained dhoti the Mahatma was wearing when he was assassinated. Next door to the museum, the Gandhi Memorial Museum Library houses a reference collection, open to all, of fifteen thousand books, periodicals, letters and microfilms.

Madurai Tourism And Travel Guide

Amid all the hustle and bustle of an active town with a flourishing economic, political and social milieu, lies the culturally ancient city of Madurai in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India . Madurai has a history dating back to the Stone Ages and later to the golden period of Sangam literature, when the ancient classical language of Tamil flourished under the aegis of great poets and scholars who gathered at Madurai.

Tourists visit Madurai to experience the olde city, to see the magnificent Meenakshi temple and the other historic and natural sites that the city is full of. What makes Madurai so exceptional and special are the things that are native to the city and no tourist on a trip to Madurai will want to let pass; the Madurai Meenakshi temple, the GI tagged Madurai Sungudi saris and the Madurai Malli, the flowers that are the pride of Madurai ever since the Sangam period and of course, Madurai’s Jigardhandha.

As Madurai lies in close proximity to many other noteworthy tourist cities like Palani, Kodaikanal , Srirangam and Karaikudi, it makes for a worthy pilgrimage. Madurai tourism has in stock great places to visit and promises a number of thrilling things to do. How to Reach

The easiest and fastest way to reach Madurai would be by flight.

Madurai flies domestic flights to most major cities in India and International flights to Singapore , Colombo and Dubai . You could easily travel to one of these cities by flight and take a connecting flight to Madurai. You could use a state bus or hire a cab from the airport to your destination.

There are quite a number of long trains from the southern cities to the rest of the country that halt at Madurai. The premium super fast Tejas Express from Chennai ’s Egmore Station to Madurai is the latest introduction to train services to Madurai. You can get auto rickshaws or cabs from the railway station to your destination.

State and National Highways connect Madurai by bus transport to neighbouring towns, districts as well as states. Madurai boasts of a number of well maintained bus stations and plenty of buses, so travelling to Madurai by bus could be hassle free.

Getting Around:

There are local buses, auto rickshaws and cabs you can use for getting around within the city and the suburbs. Try the cycle rickshaws and the two wheelers that come on hire.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Madurai has a hot climate throughout the year. The best time to visit is the months of winter from November to February.

Summer (March-May):

Summer months are very hot and off season in Madurai. There might be occasional mango showers in April-May, which will bring down the maximum temperature. People go off to the waterfalls during these summer showers for a drench. But generally Madurai remains a hot place in summer. Take a breather in the hilly regions of Sirumalai and Kodaikanal .

Monsoon (August-October):

Monsoon brings moderate rainfall to the region. It’s a good season for nature tourists, for you can visit the waterfalls, but the rains might be a hindrance to long sightseeing trips.

Winter (November-February):

Winter’s neither too cold nor too warm. It’s the right, pleasant season to visit places and go for long drives. Winter is the time the winged visitors arrive at Madurai’s water holes. If you’re a birder, you’ll have great time in Madurai watching the birds.

Things to Do

Archaeological Sites:

If you are interested in archaeology, visit Devankurichi, about 40 km from Madurai. Amazing artefacts from megalithic and iron age periods were excavated from the site, which later was the region where Shaivism and Jainism flourished. You could still see the ruined Jain temples and the Shiva temples built by the later Pandya Kings.

Thiruaapudaiyaar Temple:

A beautiful ancient Shiva temple enroute to Vaigai River, the temple is the 2nd of the Thevara Stalas of the Pandya Kingdoms. According to the temple’s legends, a Pandya king worshipped a wedge or aapu as a Shiva Linga, and it mysteriously turned into a real linga.

Sound and Light Shows:

Don’t miss the Sound and Light Shows at Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal that run in English from 6.45pm-7.35pm and in Tamil from 8.00pm-8.50pm daily. Check out the Madurai Gandhi Museum’s Sound and Light Shows too. You could participate in yoga, pranayama and meditation classes held in the Museum.

Tiruparankundram:

This is one of Madurai’s unique rock cut temples. The Tiruparankundram temple for Subrahmanya was built by the Pandya Kings of the 6th century and celebrates the celestial marriage of Subrahmanya with Devayanai.

Sivaganga Palace:

Visit Gowri Vilasam, the 19th century Sivaganga Palace built over the more ancient Palace of the 1730s, which had been the secret meeting place of the warrior kings Veerapandiya Kattabomman and the Marudhapandi brothers. Visit the Raja Rajeshwari Temple inside the Palace and the royal tank. Sivaganga is about 45 km from Madurai.

Gorippalayam Dargah:

The Gorippalayam Dargah built in the 13th century, is the largest mosque in Madurai. Said to have been built by Thirumalai Nayakar, the mosque that sits on the banks of Vaigai River is a marvel of ancient architecture.

Samanar Hills:

About 15 km from Madurai, the rock cut Jain temples, with their sculptures and wall carvings of the 9th century are sure to amaze you. There are 2000 year old Tamil-Brahmi inscriptions, sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras and stone beds that the monks of the bygone eras used to rest.

Pottery making:

Visit Vilacheri in the suburbs of Madurai. The region has skilled pottery makers and you can watch them handle their clay with a dexterity that comes with craftsmanship and years of practise. Go ahead and dip your hands into the soft earth and make yourself a clay souvenir to take home. You could buy clay and Paper Mache dolls here.

Madurai’s huge market area is primarily spread out around the Meenakshi Temple. The Puthu Mandapam near the eastern gate of the temple has hundreds of shops selling bronze, metal, aluminium ware and traditional fashion accessories and toys along with a number of tailoring shops, where you can get your clothes stitched in an hour or two. Around the temple you’ll find a number of textile shops selling the traditional Madurai cotton Sungudi saris and dhotis. Visit Chithirai and Masi streets for clothes and Avani Mula Street for handicrafts. For branded items visit Vishal De Mal, Milan ’em Shopping Mall or Madurai Mall. Visit the Banana Market, which is one of Madurai’s popular tourist attractions. 

Madurai is a trading city, popularly called Thoonga Nagaram or the city that never sleeps. The business of loading and unloading vegetables at the markets go on till wee hours and flower merchants spread their wares before the cock crows, so roadside eateries work in tandem to keep up with a steady supply of food. A late night visitor to Madurai is familiar with the clang-clang of steel ladle on a hot tawa as the Kothu Parotta gets done to a gentle crisp. And do try the Ceylon Parotta, said to have been introduced in Madurai by the people of Sri Lanka . You will find a number of Messes that sell varieties of veggie or mutton biryani, kola urundai or chicken dosa. Call on Murugan Idli for Idlis and Onion Utthapam, Modern Restaurant for a variety rice and Ven Pongal, Prema Vilas for Tirunelveli Halwa, Arya Bhavan for Kachoris and Annapurna Mithai for Sarson ka saag and makki ki roti.

Beauty in Bloom: A walk through the Madurai Flower Market

Mounds of jasmine flowers are seen everywhere.

One of the most aesthetically beautiful parts of our meditation retreat to South India is our visit to the local flower market in Madurai . It is one of the biggest markets in all of India and provides exports of many different species of flora. Though it is an effort of the local Madurai community, the market itself has won international recognition for the quality and abundance of plants it provides.

Perhaps the most popular of all of the flowers in the market is the Jasmine flower, known as the Madurai malli . Jasmine is well-known for its unique and delightful scent. The oil that is extracted from the flower is said to help with depression and anxiety, and is also claimed to be an antiseptic and an aphrodisiac. The Jasmine flower is delicate and small, and is sometimes adorns ceremonial headpieces for occasions such as weddings.

The Madurai malli is sought after by various big names in the fashion industry for its fragrance. For example, Dior designers make sure to visit the market each year to gain inspiration for their designs and signature perfumes.

Besides the Jasmine flower, the rose is also extremely popular in the market. The market is said to store and sell as many as 10 tons of flowers every day — an unimaginable amount of color and beauty. It is worth it to see and smell for yourself, and it is one of the stops on our 2014 South India Spiritual Adventure this March.

Flower vendors from near and far come here to buy flowers in bulk which they then take back to weave into garlands that are used for a variety of purposes.
