Had such a great time on this tour. Guide was awesome, and the whole group just clicked. The desert camping was amazing. Morocco is a beautiful country. I highly recommend this tour. The fact that it was targeted to my age group helped make it really fun.

10-Day Ancient Egypt Tour (Superior Hotels)

I enjoyed my recent Egypt trip with Vacations To Go Travel, just as my travel companion did! Bassem, our guide, was excellent, and the Nile cruise was unforgettable. However, the early start for day tours left me feeling exhausted, especially during Ramadan when daytime hours were shorter. Despite this, both my friends and I enjoyed the trip immensely. Thank you! - Jia Li

The tour was exactly what I had hoped it would be. In Cairo, Harry and Ahmed were amazing and my guide on the cruise, Mahmoud was the absolute best. Having the surprise of being the only one in the tour meant that the individual attention was key to my enjoying the tour. I saw everything I wanted to see and was not hurried along at all. I also enjoyed the down time. Thanks Nile Tours.

Overall this tour was amazing! There are some incredible game drives and fun places to say. A few of the excursions are a bit mediocre and the days on the bus can be very long. It was 100% worth it though. I had a once in a lifetime adventure and will never forget this trip.

Our guide, karim, helped make the trip quite memorable! He was very knowledgeable, was quick to point out areas of interest, and was patient while teaching us some of the local language. I truly felt immersed in the culture and learned so much in such a short amount of time. The hospitality we received on the adventure was so genuine and heartfelt, I can't imagine traveling to and navigating Morocco on my own and I highly recommend Marrakech Dream Trips !

12-day Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated) Tour

  • Overland Truck

12-day Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)

Great tour, well organised, very knowledgeable and friendly guide. 2 suggestions: - please add safari pass amount to overall tour fee and make payable upfront. It’s safer not to carry lots of cash. Also guide does not need all this cash as most fees can be paid by credit card. - tipping is expected on most activities. It’s often difficult to figure out the right amount even with the help of the guide. Suggest to make the guide tip on behalf of the group taking the money from the safari pass or ask everybody to pay a small amount upfront (e.g. USD 10) to the guide.

Amazing Tour. they were very flexible when we wanted to change what we were doing on the last day. the tour guides, Nasser and Muhammed were excellent. their knowledge was very comprehensive and more importantly, they always put our needs first so they were very empathetic. Nasser was very concerned to make sure that my Mum was happy and looked after. and Muhammed was happy to just chill out with us and share some amazing stories. they are a credit to the tour company.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Africa

This is an excellent tour but it's certainly not relaxing! We had 2 brilliant leaders who were very knowledgable and looked after us very, very well. Very long days, only occasionally did we reach our overnight accommodation with time spare to relax/swim. Lots of like-minded travelling companions, many of whom had done several GAdventure tours in the past and all of them were very good company.
Everything is good. The tour guide Sophie is the best.

African Group Safaris & Tours

Signing up to an African safari group tour is one of the most popular ways to go on safari. Having an expert plan the nitty-gritty of your safari package for you saves time and hassle. It means all you have to do is read up on African wildlife and hop on a plane. A small group tour can be a great way to see Africa. Special interest group trips, such as bird watching, conservation or big cats, are recommended. A special interest trip will put you in a group with like-minded people, and the guide will be an expert. Before jumping into a group safari though, there are a few things to consider.

6 Questions About Group Safari Tours

Stuart Butler

Answered by

Stuart butler.

african safari small group tours

Why should I choose an African group safari?

“The simple answer is cost. A group safari invariably costs less than a private safari of the same quality. However, there are other reasons. If you’re the type of a traveler who likes to make new friends on holiday, a group safari is the obvious way to go. There are also many specialized or expert-led group safari trips available. These allow you to have experiences that you wouldn’t have on a private safari. For example, a safari led by a renowned elephant or big cat expert will bring knowledge and add depth to your safari. There are also group safaris based on specific activities, such as birding. A small-group safari tour can be ideal for the single traveler who’d rather not travel alone.”

How is a group safari different from a private safari?

“As you might expect on a group safari, your schedule is largely fixed. Any minor changes are made at the request of the whole group. In most cases this isn’t likely to be much of a problem. What can be more problematic though is sorting out priorities when on a game drive. For example, if you’re a keen birder but the rest of your group is only interested in the Big Five (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino). Or the whole group might be interested in seeing an elephant, but some want to stay longer while others are happy just taking a quick snapshot. Being on a group safari doesn’t mean that you’re going to spend 24 hours a day with the same people. Most likely you’ll only be together when on safari or traveling to and from a park. In the camp, you’ll be left to your own devices. The advantage of a private safari is that you’ll make all your own decisions on schedules and safari details. However, you’re going to pay much more for the pleasure.”

What is the typical size of a group on a shared trip?

“On a budget safari there can be up to 10 people in the vehicle, which can detract from the wildlife-viewing experience. If you’ve signed up to a multicountry overland tour in a specially designed bus, you should check the max number of people they will fit into the bus. Note though, in many parks and reserves these kind of vehicles are banned. If you’re on a mid-range group safari, there will likely be between four and six people in the group. On a high-end safari, there isn’t much difference between a group safari and a private safari.”

What happens if I sign-up for a group tour but it doesn't attract enough people?

“Every company will have its own terms and conditions. You should check these carefully before signing up. Reputable companies will try and make satisfactory alternative arrangements for you. This most likely means altering the route somewhat to be able to merge two small groups into one. Otherwise you’ll be given the options of paying a bit more for the tour operator to run the safari as advertised or canceling and getting a full reimbursement. Reimbursements don’t include any flights purchased. Or, alternative travel dates might be offered. Make sure you read the fine print and ask if anything is unclear or missing. Always choose your operator carefully. Reading recent reviews can be useful.”

What type of vehicles can I expect?

“This depends on how much you pay for a safari. On a budget safari, you’ll most likely end up in a minibus with a pop-top roof. This isn’t ideal. In these vehicles, windows don’t always open fully. If the vehicle is full, not everyone will even get a window seat. This means that most of the time you’ll have to make do with standing and peering out of the open roof. This doesn’t give the best perspective of the animals, and it can still mean limited space for each safari-goer. At the opposite end, on a high-cost luxury group safari you’ll be in a long-wheel-base 4x4 customized for safaris. It will be an open-sided vehicle, and the number of people in the vehicle will be kept to a minimum. This means that whichever side of the vehicle an animal is, you will have a front-seat view. These vehicles often also have camera platforms or beanbags. They also have extra suspension, making for a generally smooth ride on the bumpy roads.”

What should I consider when choosing an African group tour?

“Does the tour visit all the parks and reserves you want to visit? This is the first thing you should look at when considering a group safari. If you have dreams of seeing the Serengeti–Mara wildebeest migration, there’s no point booking a group safari that doesn’t visit the Serengeti or Masai Mara. Also make sure you’re in the right part of the park at the right time of year. Ensure the tour doesn’t visit too many parks and reserves. If it sounds rushed on paper, then it will be hectic when you hit the ground. Many group safaris try and cram in too much in too short a time. The result is that you spend more time traveling to and from parks than on safari. Another very important point is to check the type of vehicle used and how many other people will be in your group. The smaller the overall group size the better. Consider if you have a special interest that might not be compatible with a group tour. For example, if you’re a birdwatcher or a serious photographer, look for a specialist tour dedicated to your interest.”

A small group African safari typically involves joining a guided tour with a limited number of participants, usually ranging from 6 to 12 people. These tours are designed to provide a more personalized and interactive experience, allowing you to explore wildlife-rich areas, national parks, and reserves in Africa while accompanied by experienced guides.

A small group tour allows you the space to stretch out and get to know your fellow travelers. With a relaxing ambiance while allowing you to truly get intimate with the sights and sounds along your trip. Another advantage is you can enjoy a closer interaction with the wildlife. The tours are reasonably priced while allowing the budget traveler an opportunity to get the most out of their adventure. Naturally, you interact more closely with the guides by getting to know them and assisting around the campsite. Getting involved allows you to maximize the experience in nature and get away from the routine of everyday life.

Our range of small group tours are perfect for single travelers as you can get to know each other more closely. Many travelers make friends that last a lifetime!

When to Go on a Small Group African Safari?

The best time to go on a small group African safari depends on the specific destination and the wildlife you wish to encounter. Here are some general considerations:

  • Migration Safaris  If witnessing the great wildebeest migration in East Africa’s Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara Reserve is a priority, plan your safari between July and October when the herds are crossing the Mara River.
  • Dry Season Many parks in Southern Africa, such as Kruger National Park in South Africa or Etosha National Park in Namibia, offer excellent wildlife viewing during the dry season (May to October) when animals gather around water sources.
  • Birding Safaris Bird enthusiasts should consider visiting during the wetter months when migratory bird species are present, typically between November and April.
  • Green Season Some travelers prefer visiting during the “green season” or low season, which is the rainy period. This time offers lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and lower rates. However, wildlife sightings may be more challenging due to dense vegetation.

Who Should Go on a Small Group African Safari?

  • Nature and Wildlife Enthusiasts  If you have a deep appreciation for wildlife, conservation, and the natural world, a small group safari allows you to witness Africa’s iconic animals up close and learn from knowledgeable guides.
  • Solo Travelers or Small Groups  Joining a small group safari is an ideal option for solo travelers, couples, or small groups of friends or family. It provides an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and share the adventure together.
  • First-time Visitors to Africa  If it’s your first time visiting Africa, a small group safari offers a well-planned itinerary, experienced guides, and a supportive environment. It helps ensure a smooth and rewarding introduction to the continent’s incredible wildlife and diverse landscapes.
  • Those Seeking a Hassle-free Experience  Small group safaris often include accommodations, transportation, meals, and activities, minimizing the logistical challenges of organizing a safari independently. This allows you to focus on enjoying the experience without worrying about the details.

Is a Small Group Safari the Perfect Adventure for You?

Dreaming of exploring Africa’s breathtaking landscapes and witnessing iconic wildlife in their natural habitat?

A small group safari might be the answer! But before booking your tickets, it’s essential to ask yourself: Is this type of safari the right fit for you?

Let’s delve into the pros and cons to help you decide. Let’s get brutally honest.

Thriving on Social Interaction?

Pros: Small groups, typically ranging from 6 to 16 people, foster camaraderie and shared experiences. You’ll connect with like-minded adventurers, sharing the excitement of spotting a lion or the awe of a vibrant sunset. Imagine swapping stories by the campfire, forging friendships that linger long after the safari ends.

Cons: If you crave complete solitude, a small group may not be ideal. While there’s free time for exploration, shared meals and activities can limit alone time.

Seeking Personalized Attention?

Pros: With fewer participants, guides can tailor the experience to your interests and pace. Ask questions, delve deeper into animal behavior, and enjoy personalized insights – a luxury often absent in larger groups.

Cons: Remember, you’re sharing the guide’s expertise with others. While flexibility exists, adjusting the itinerary entirely to your preferences might not be possible.

Budget Savvy Explorer?

Pros: Small group safaris usually fall between private tours and large group options, offering a balance between affordability and personalized experience. Sharing costs for transportation, guides, and accommodations contributes to a more budget-friendly adventure.

Cons: While more affordable than private tours, small group safaris still come at a premium compared to backpacking or budget-focused independent travel. Be prepared for the investment.

Craving Comfort and Convenience?

Pros: Many small group tours handle logistics like meals, transportation, and permits, allowing you to relax and focus on enjoying the journey. Experienced guides navigate unfamiliar terrain, eliminating the stress of planning and ensuring a smooth experience.

Cons: If you relish complete freedom and spontaneity, a pre-planned itinerary might feel restrictive. While some flexibility exists, exploring solely on your terms won’t be possible.

Ultimately, a small group African safari offers a well-rounded and immersive wildlife adventure, suitable for nature enthusiasts, solo travelers, first-time visitors, and those looking for a hassle-free experience. Research different tour operators, itineraries, and destinations to find the one that aligns with your interests, budget, and preferred travel dates.

Kruger National Park, Johannesburg, Hoedspruit, Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park

Discover true safari splendour on this once-in-a-lifetime eight-day luxury small-group tour of Southern Africa’s breathtaking natural wonders (max. 10 travellers), showcasing the region’s extraordinary wildlife – including the iconic ‘big five.’ Experience five-star lodge stays with all-inclusive food and drinks plus daily activities, selected wine and spirits at Imbali Safari Lodge, make magnificent sightings in South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park, savour a sunset cruise on the majestic Zambezi River, witness the majesty of Zimbabwe’s mighty Victoria Falls and explore stunning landscapes in Botswana’s unforgettable Chobe National Park.

This is an African adventure worth going wild for – included are seven nights of five-star luxury accommodation in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana, select international flights and on-ground transfers, daily breakfast, select dining experiences during lodge stays and the services of expert, English-speaking guides.

Your journey takes you to: Johannesburg, South Africa — Hoedspruit — Kruger National Park — Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe — Chobe National Park, Botswana — Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

african safari small group tours

Welcome to Johannesburg! On arrival in South Africa’s vibrant metropolis, you’ll be met by a Luxury Escapes representative at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), who will greet you before your transfer by domestic flight to Hoedspruit (‘Hat Creek' in Afrikaans), the vibrant gateway to the world-famous Kruger National Park. Upon arriving in town, you’ll be met by a tour representative and transferred to your luxurious accommodation, Imbali Safari Lodge.

Set within the extraordinary Kruger National Park, Imbali is the perfect base to explore a region steeped in history, brimming with spectacular landscapes and an abundance of incredible wildlife. Set within the central point of over 10,000 hectares of wild concession, each of the lodge’s 12 private chalets offers exquisite views, private jacuzzis and everything you need for a truly magical African experience. Spend your first evening admiring the majestic South African sunset and savouring time spent in the midst of the true wilderness.

Roam wild and free as you explore the Mpumalanga region, backed by the expertise of Imbali Lodge. Admire how Kruger National Park’s spectacular granite kopjes (hills) pepper the south, the Lebombo Mountains rise from the savannah in the east, and tropical forests cover the north of the staggeringly huge park.

Spend days in paradise engaging with Imbali Lodge’s incredible safari program. The park offers some of the best game viewing and wildlife opportunities in the world, including Africa’s iconic safari species and the coveted ‘big five’ – elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo. It’s also the perfect chance to catch glimpses of giraffes, zebras and menacingly cute hippopotamuses, as well as an extraordinary amount of native birdlife, including southern yellow-billed hornbills, crested barbets and glossy starlings.

If you’re feeling brave, ask your guide about ‘Qugunyan’s Fortune,’ an almost mythical abandoned fortune of diamonds, gold and coins found originally found just after the Anglo-Boer war.

Enjoy evenings with good company, great food and hours spent under the star-swept skies.

After breakfast, depart for Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) and your international flight of approximately two hours to Victoria Falls Airport (VFA), Zimbabwe, and the gateway to one of the world’s most magnificent natural cascades. After touching down, you’ll be met and transferred across the border to your Zimbabwe accommodation – Pioneers Victoria Falls (approximate transfer time is 4.5 hours).

Set among lush gardens, this boutique, heritage-inspired hotel offers elegant lodging just minutes from the thunderous beauty of Victoria Falls. Spend pleasant evenings in the serene central area, dining in Pioneers Falls’ nostalgic dining room or sipping local craft beer in the stylish lobby bar.

Today, learn about Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls, on a guided tour on the Zimbabwean side of the falls. Learn why the falls are known as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ – by locals, and witness what happens when the waters of the Zambezi River plunge over the 1700-metre-wide and 100-metre-deep chasm, creating a shower of spray and deafening noise.

As you amble along scenic pathways of the surrounding rainforest – stopping at each spectacular vantage point along the way – learn about the geological formation of Victoria Falls, the fascinating ‘discovery’ by David Livingstone and the abundance of birdlife.

After an afternoon of leisure, savour the experience of a lifetime – a sunset cruise along the mighty Zambezi River. Board the Ra-Ikane – named after historic explorer David Livingstone’s local guide and handcrafted to resemble a turn-of-the-century riverboat – and sip on your favourite sundowner as you relax and enjoy the riverine vegetation and exciting wildlife, including unique birds, hippos and the occasional crocodile. It’s the perfect way to experience Victorian splendour in the heart of Africa as you enjoy a welcome cocktail, tea and cakes while being given the history of the river. In the drier months, wildlife such as elephants and many antelope species can be seen grazing on the riverbanks or swimming across to the smaller islands.

Please note: Your sunset cruise may be moved to another day, depending on weather and transfers.

After a hearty breakfast, journey by vehicle roughly 90-minutes to your accommodation – Cresta Mowana Safari Resort & Spa, a luxurious riverside retreat in the heart of the Botswana bush, on the edge of Chobe National Park — home to Africa’s largest elephant population, buffalo herds, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles and a vast number of beautiful birds. Enjoy unparalleled panoramic views across the floodplains, the very best African hospitality and uniquely luxe lodge accommodation – the entirety of the hotel is under thatched roofing.

With countless gorgeous riverbank pathways and a wealth of amenities – including a bar, resident lounge, dining patio, golf course and safari boutique – Cresta Mowana Safari Resort & Spa is your gateway to splendour and safari. Enjoy a wide range of included safari activities, all the while being accompanied by the resort's impeccable service and expertise.

The options are almost limitless – spend your days exploring the stunning natural beauty of Chobe National Park. During morning and afternoon safari drives, learn of the rich ecosystems of the park, which lend themselves to an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna, as well as an array of stunning landscapes and spectacular wild animals.

During your included drives, watch for elephants feeding and washing, spot stampeding herds of buffalo, keep an eye out for hyenas hiding from majestic lions and encounter up to 16 types of antelope, including the rare, semi-aquatic puku, red lechwe and sitatunga. Depending on the season, you may also catch the second-largest migration of zebra in Africa.

Say goodbye to Africa’s untamed paradise as you depart for Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) and your onward journey.

Southern Africa: Small-Group Safari Tour with Five-Star Lodge Stays, Game Drives, Victoria Falls Cruise & Internal Flights route map

Your experience begins in Johannesburg, gateway to spectacular Kruger National Park.Embark on game drives led by expert local guides and trackers, who will share personal stories and help you spot elusive animals. Dubbed the ‘big five’ purely because they are the five most difficult animals in Africa to seek out on foot, there’s nothing more majestic than watching lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos in their natural habitat – it's an experience you will never forget.

You'll also visit Chobe National Park, home to Africa’s largest elephant population, with an estimated 120,000 of these beautiful animals calling the reserve home. Botswana has long been associated with the world’s greatest explorers, including David Livingstone, and you can follow in their footsteps with incredible wildlife experiences. Spend two full days in the Chobe area, taking morning and afternoon game drives. The rich ecosystems of the park lend themselves to an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna, as well as an array of stunning landscapes and, of course, spectacular wild animals, including lions, giraffes, hyenas and more.

Get up close to one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls, Victoria Falls, on a guided tour and learn why the falls are known as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ – by locals. Witness as the roaring waters of the Zambezi River plunge over the 1700-metre-wide and 100-metre-deep chasm, creating a shower of spray and deafening noise, and dividing the countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia in a most dramatic fashion. Determined to be the largest naturally formed waterfall on planet Earth, in 1989, it officially became one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Begin your journey with three nights at the lavish Imbali Safari Lodge, set on the banks of the N’waswitsontso River in the Kruger National Park. It's view of the valleys and mountains, the enchanting sunrises and African sunsets and the variety of game species that graze nearby create a serene ambience that makes the lodges at Imbali a truly spectacular experience.

Let all-inclusive dining and free-flow drinks fuel your adventures as you embark on exhilarating game drives to spot elephants, lions, giraffes and leopards. By night, unwind in your private lodging surrounded by lush landscape. Rustic and sanded wooden decks open to an expansive backdrop of the national park while sandstone bathrooms welcome you with sunken bathtubs and romantic outdoor showers – it’s the perfect setting to reconnect with nature.

You'll also spend two nights in the shadow of wonder at Pioneers Victoria Falls – an oasis of timeless glamour – and two nights at the opulent Cresta Mowana Safari Resort and Spa, located on the banks of the mighty Chobe River. Bear witness to the magical wonders of untamed Africa, where herds of elephants, antelopes, giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards and more roam freely against the backdrop of the spectacular floodplains.

Africa Safari Tours & Vacations

  • Africa Safari Tours & Holidays

Take a walk on the wild side on an African safari.

The word “safari” means “journey” in Swahili. And a safari in Africa is all about the journey. While seeing a leopard munch on a freshly caught gazelle or spying a curious lion cub venture away from its mother’s protective embrace will be highlights of your trip, you’ll discover the journey is as much a part of your trip as the destination.

The road-trip games you play with your new travel mates, the feeling of the wind (and maybe a little dust) in your hair when you’re travelling down long, winding roads, and the young Maasai boy who waved at you as you passed him along the road will stay with you long after you return.

A close encounter with these gentle giants is an extraordinary African experience that will always stay with you.

giraffes on the Serengeti in Tanzania

Float over the Serengeti

The only thing more magical than witnessing the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti? Seeing it from the sky in a hot air balloon. As the herds of wildebeest and thousands of other animals travel from Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can watch their journey and enjoy incredible views from a unique perspective.

Okavango Delta

Canoe in the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta has a unique system of waterways that are home to an immense array of wildlife. The best way to explore it is in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe. Visit in May to September, when animals are confined to small islands created by the annual flood, making it easy to spot great herds of elephant and antelope, hippos, crocodiles, lions, cheetahs and more.

Where we stay on safari.

Camping in Africa

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

How we get around

Africa overland truck

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

For more info on our overland trucks, see our Africa overland page .

African Safari FAQs

When is the best time to go on safari.

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Read more about the best time to go on safari .

Where is the best place to go on safari?

The best place to go on safari depends on what kind of animals you’d like to see and what other activities you’d like to do in destination. We offer safaris to some of the best safari destinations in eastern and southern Africa, like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and more.

Read more about how to choose your ideal African safari .

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colours is the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our accessible travel page for more information.

What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Responsible travel

Our stance on Animal Welfare

This world and the animals that call it home are precious, and we believe it’s our responsibility to help preserve them. We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance.

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

Read more about our Animal Welfare Policy here .

Small group African safari tours

Small group African safari tours

One of the more common methods to embark on safari is to sign up for a trip with a small group that specializes in African travel. Time and effort may be saved by delegating the planning of the specifics of your safari vacation to an experienced professional. This implies that all you have to do is brush up on your knowledge of African animals and then board a flight to the continent.

A trip to Africa in a small group may be an excellent way to experience the continent, and itineraries that focus on a particular interest, such as big cats, bird viewing, or conservation, come highly recommended. A vacation catered to a particular interest will surround you with individuals who share your passions, and you’ll be led by an experienced professional.

Table of Contents

The best Small group African safari tours

Price of small group african safari tours.

Expect a starting price of $1,200 per person to the thousands of dollars. Safari packages span a wide price range and are influenced by several variables. The biggest factor determining the price of a safari is the level of accommodation. This will ultimately categorize tours as being budget, mid-range or luxury and of course shared tours are usually cheaper than private tours.

This is especially the case for single travelers. On a 10 day trip or longer, you might want to consider a fly-in safari, but can be considerably more expensive than road safaris. Check out the seasons too; low-season prices can be favorable and while you’ll probably get some rain at this time, it’s when the scenery is at its best.

Breakdown of African safari group tours

Safari essentials and information

Why go on a group safari.

Comparatively, the price of a group safari is always lower than that of a private safari that has the same caliber. Nevertheless, there are further explanations. An organized group safari is the best option if you’re the social sort that enjoys meeting new people while on vacation and safari tours may be taken alone, or they can be taken as part of a group led by an expert.

They provide access to activities that would be unavailable on a personalized safari. A safari conducted by a well-known rhino or big cat specialist, for instance, will provide more context and insight into the experience.

Group safaris may also be organized for more niche interests, such as birdwatching. If you’re a lone traveler who would prefer not to explore Africa on your own, a small-group safari vacation may be the perfect solution.

How many people are usually on a group safari?

The fact that up to 10 passengers in one vehicle is allowed on a budgeted safari may be a major detriment to the quality of the trip for those hoping to see wild animals up close. Overland tours that span many countries sometimes use specially outfitted buses, so before signing up, make sure to inquire about the maximum number of passengers allowed on the trip.

Nevertheless, be aware that many parks or reserves prohibit the use of these vehicles. The average number of persons on a moderately priced safari trip is between four and six. There is not much of a distinction between a private safari and a group safari on a luxury safari.

After a long day surveying the incredible Africa landscape and wildlife on offer, guests can look forward to the very best safari accommodation the Africa safari has to offer. The accommodation here is excellent with numerous options from tented camps, luxury lodges to camping grounds.

From camping in the bush with amenities to mid-range and luxury lodges located inside park reserves, there’s something for everyone. On a short safari, high-end lodgings are commonly used on fly-in safari packages and excellent wining and dining is very much the norm.

Many are small designer ecolodges, often made to blend into the environment whilst others near watering holes are superb for wildlife viewing and guests can enjoy a front-row seat to spot the wildebeest and zebras crossing the river.

Animals on an African safari tour?

You’ll find just about everything on an African group safari! The continent is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) and visitors will also find spotted hyenas and hippos depending on the particular country and park you visit.

Tanzania contains the highest concentration of lions in the world with over 3,000 of them found in the Serengeti alone and about 1.5 million wildebeests, in addition to wildebeest, gazelle, giraffes, black rhinos. A view of these huge wildebeest crossing the crocodile infested river Mara has been included in the 7 wonders of natural Africa.

If you enjoy driving, it is possible to visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on a 10 day road safari. This combination gives you a reasonable chance of seeing all the Big Five in a short time. Ngorongoro is the only reliable park in Africa to see black rhino in the wild.

Uganda is a safari destination with a reputation for low density tourism, eco-friendly lodges and political stability whilst South Africa is the continents most popular and best-developed travel destination, famed for its sun-soaked beaches and vast wildlife-filled game reserves. It also provides exceptional opportunities to combine safari trips with wineland tours.

What factors should I think about when picking a group safari?

Are all the reserves & parks you’re interested in seeing on this trip included? If you are thinking of going on a safari with a large group, this is the initial thing you need to consider. If you want to view the wildebeest migration between the Serengeti and Masai Mara, there is no use in signing up for a small group safari that doesn’t go to either of those places.

If you want to see the park’s best attractions, you should go at the proper time of year and in the right section of the park. Make sure the trip doesn’t hit too many nature preserves in one go. The more hurried it seems on paper, the more frenetic it will be in practice.

Too often, tour groups on safari attempt to jam in too much information in too little time meaning so much time is spent going to and from the parks that actual safari time is cut short. Also, think about whether or not your own interests might clash with those of the tour group. If you’re a passionate photographer or birdwatcher, for instance, you should seek out a specialized trip catered to your hobby.

What countries are a must-do on a small group African safari?

There are many small group African safaris on offer, so you do have choices on what you can fit into your safari. The most-popular option is a Big 5 wildlife tour where you’ll see the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo in stunning parks such as the Serengeti in Tanzania or Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The continent has so much to offer and choosing may come down to personal preferences and the length of time it takes to travel to your destination with Botswana , Kenya , South Africa , Namibia and Uganda all offering incredible wildlife tours.

Lucky visitors can also hop between countries such as the Ngorongoro Crater , also in Tanzania or combine your 10 day safari with a neighboring country such as Kenya with gems like Masai Mara , which consistently rank in the top destinations for safari-goers in Africa.

How much does it cost to do a safari in Africa?

An affordable one week safari in Africa can cost up to $2,500 and as high as $7,500 USD or more, depending on the level of luxury that you choose for your vacation.

Which African country is best for safaris?

Botswana is widely regarded as one of the best African countries for a safari, with its superb animal protection of the Big 5, ecotourism efforts, wonderful national parks and reserves including Chobe National Park, home to a large population of elephants, the Okavango Delta, Moremi and the Makgadikgadi Pans.

What type of vehicles can I expect on safari?

Safari prices determine the type of vehicle you’ll travel in with inexpensive safaris using pop-top mini buses with open windows whilst luxury group safaris use long-wheel-base 4x4s. Here, the open-sided vehicle will carry few passengers and you’ll get a front-seat view of any animal.

Exellent and wonderful, reaching way above expectations.

Julia you did a fantastic job - everything was first class. Well organised, efficient and stress free. We all agreed it was the best holiday we've ever had. Cant wait to travel with CSC again.

We are so happy we put our trust in CSC, we had an amazing adventure and would recommend them to anyone.

The trip exceeded my expectations and was the best family holiday I have ever had. Our children simply loved it and now I know more about African wildlife than they do about our own farm animals.

Classic Safari are the people who genuinely know other culture and offer incredible insight to perfectly meet your expectations.

We loved it all. Our son wants to go back tomorrow. We would ALL go back again!

An amazing experience - the best family holiday we have ever had. We were extremely impressed by the meticulous attention to our itinerary. I can't speak highly enough of all the elements of this exciting journey!

Thank you for making our trip to Africa so spectacular. The attention to detail really made it special. It really was the trip of a lifetime.

Very knowledgeable and patient. Our trip was all that we hoped for. Wonderful!

Everything was perfect! Advice and information on destinations and activities hit everything I had hoped to experience. I contacted the Classic Safari Company upon recommendation and have now, in turn, recommended to others.

You can't improve on perfection. I had my best birthday and holiday with my family celebrating my 80th birthday in Africa. Everything that Julia organised was perfect and the whole trip was a highlight!

The trip of a lifetime, couldn't have dreamt of a better adventure if I tried.

Absolutely everything was first class & so well organised.

Classic Safari Company has done it again! A unique experience that ticked all the boxes - wildlife, culture and dining experience. A dream come true!

Their experience and knowledge of Africa is evident and we couldn't have been happier with the total package. This has given us a taste for Africa - now we are ready for more.

If you want the most sensational experience in Africa let Julia and the staff at Classic Safari Co plan it for you! Their knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm for their job means your every wish will be fulfilled.

Classic Safari is the place to go to for "top end" adventure travel.

Classic Safari Company were brilliant - 10/10

The Classic Safari Company is the best I have dealt with. Extremely knowledgeable & professional, friendly, patient & understanding of first timers to Africa.

It certainly was the best trip we have EVER had. The experiences were mind blowing.  We want everyone we know to experience Africa - the animals, the people - magical.

Would do it all again and not change a moment. Best holiday ever!

An absolutely fantastic travel company - every one of the many trips they have organised for us over 22 years have been faultless and fabulous.

Safety In Africa: Tips For Staying Safe

For many, just the thought of travelling to Africa is enough to send them scurrying under their bed with fear.

We’ve all heard the horror stories about crime and diseases, so most people’s concerns about visiting are usually centered around safety in Africa.

Africa is a daunting and challenging place to travel to. However, it is one of the most rewarding travel experiences you will ever have.

There is no place on earth like Africa, and if you can tame those monsters that hide in your shadows, then it is so worth you investing time and money travelling on this unique and vast continent.

In this guide, we share our top safety tips for traveling in Africa, so you can feel more at ease about visiting.

Global Peace Index Scores

Behaviour / appearance safety tips, 2. destination safety tips, 3. driving in africa safety tips, 4. health in africa safety tips, group tours of africa, final thoughts, more africa travel posts, is africa safe.

Since Africa is a continent, you cannot simply say yes or no with regards to safety.

Some of the safest countries to visit in Africa include Mauritius, Botswana , Rwanda, Seychelles , Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Namibia, and Zambia.

These destinations are known for their welcoming hospitality, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural experiences.

Malawi is also safe in terms of crime, and is often described as The Warm Heart of Africa, though there are malaria zones and other diseases to watch out for there.

On the other hand, certain areas may pose higher safety risks due to crime and civil unrest.

Some cities in Zambia, such as Lusaka and Livingstone, have a higher crime rate.

Travelers are advised to exercise increased caution when visiting some regions such as Sudan, South Sudan, and Somalia, as well as some cities in South Africa such as Johannesburg.

There are particular areas where crime is higher, such as the Townships, or slums, which are areas that tourists wouldn’t go anyway.

Stick to the main touristy areas and tourist attractions, and you shouldn’t run into any problems.

Also, check where they rank on the Global Peace Index , to get a feel for how bad crime is.

To help you understand which countries are considered safe, here are the gpi score for some of the most visited countries in Africa.

For context, the Global Peace Index (GPI) scores work by measuring and ranking the relative peacefulness of nations and regions based on various indicators such as levels of violence, crime rates, military expenditures, terrorism, and political stability.

The scores are calculated using a wide range of data, including surveys, qualitative analysis, and expert assessments, and offer a guide to the overall assessment of peace and security.

The lower scores indicate a higher level of peace and stability.

The following scores are as of January 2024. The lowest score is 1.1, and the highest is 3.4.

Safety Tips For Traveling in Africa

To make sure you don’t run into the wrong area, or attract any unwanted attention, be sure to follow these words of advice about safety in Africa…

As with any place you visit, act confidently and always be friendly . You don’t want to invite trouble your way. Africans are really friendly, there is no reason you can’t return their beaming smiles and chat with them.

Do not wear any flashy jewelry . Look like a budget traveller. Never talk about money and how much you have. Try not to carry a lot of money on you and keep it well hidden.

Ladies , there will be many local men that will want to chat you up, these are really young, cool, good looking men. It is so easy to be charmed by them. Just be careful.

We found the locals really aggressive in Tanzania. They will crowd you and pull at you in order to get you to buy from them etc.

Just be really firm and confident with them from the word go. Avoid conversation and eye contact. Just a curt nod of the head and move on.

Choose your destination wisely . Some African countries are safer than others, so always check your government’s travel advisory warnings.

Know your own comfort level and be prepared for any dangers you may encounter.

I personally would not go to places that are currently involved in acts of war or aggression or have a high crime rate.

Countries like Somalia have too many cases of kidnapping and robbery for me to see the appeal of going. For me, it is just not worth it.

Try to avoid walking around at night. Unless you are in big cities and with a group of people. I would just stick to the campsites/hostels/hotels, or if you do, don’t be rolling drunk or by yourself.

Know the area you are in. Just in case there are wild animals, you don’t want to be unknowingly walking around in their home at night time (or day for that matter).

Also have the number of the local authorities saved on your phone, so you know who to call in case you need to.

We stayed at St Lucia , one of my favorite South African towns, but it was also a place where hippos freely wandered the streets at night.

The only place I was really scared was Johannesburg, but that was because I had heard a lot of horror stories of carjacking, mugging, armed robbery, and worse.

Nothing happened to us.

The second time I went there I had my brother, who lived there for awhile, to look out for me and take me to the safe areas.

Make sure you are aware of where it is safe to go and where it is not . If you happen to be in Johannesburg, simply get an Uber everywhere. Don’t walk, even if it’s just 5 minutes down the road.

If you can spend time with local people you know and trust who know the area like this then hang out with them.

It will ease your mind and allow you to see the good side of the destination.

Or if you are that concerned then perhaps join a tour of these certain areas.

Hiring a car is a fantastic way to see certain parts of Africa, especially the Game Reserves and National Parks. Make sure you understand the road rules and take care . Check Discover Cars for best prices and availability .

If you do plan to self-drive a safari, be sure to check out our safari tips to maximize your experience.

When in the game parks keep your windows rolled up when you get close to the wild animals. Yes, they could jump in there. Only get out of your car at the designated rest areas and still keep your five senses heightened.

Don’t lean out of the car to photograph lions or rhino, as they may come up close to your vehicle.

When driving around Africa, you will have plenty of cars, trucks and other vehicles overtaking at any moment, blind corners or not.

I always honk my horn several times when approaching a blind corner to warn anyone coming opposite to stay on their side of the road until I pass.

Also note that speed cameras are ruthless in South Africa. You might not even know they are there, so be sure to make sure you’re not speeding if you want to avoid a fine.

If you come face to face with an elephant and he starts flapping his ears, that is your cue to reverse a bit and give him his space. And if he charges then lets hope you can drive like Michael Schumaker.

If you have to catch public transport i.e mini-vans, pick ups, never sit in the front seat/cabin. It is commonly known as the Death Seat . Take the squashy back options – it is safer.

Make sure that you get the recommended vaccinations before you arrive in Africa. You will need Yellow Fever and may not be allowed to enter your own country upon return if you have not had it.

You may also need to get vaccinations for Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, as well as the normal precautions such as tetanus jabs.

Carry your vaccination booklet with you as you will need a lot of vaccinations and won’t remember when you had it or when you need a booster. You’ll need to show it to prove you have had your yellow fever vaccination as well.

Do you have malaria pills? Probably something you should have. Although they generally just mask the symptoms rather than prevent them.

My brother still got malaria even while taking them and was holed up in a small, dusty cabin on Lake Malawi for three months. He was happy enough, as the World Cup Soccer was on so he could watch all the matches.

Some have ugly side effects so choose wisely. We didn’t have any problems with Doxycycline, although it can make you more sensitive to the sun.

They came in handy for me when I contracted Tick Bite Fever. They are an antibiotic so they helped clear it up.

Watch out when swimming in stagnant water (particularly in Malawi) where you can get Bilharzia. Check with the locals they will tell you if it is okay to swim or not.

Don’t go hiking mountains in the heat of a Malawian 40 degree day. You will feel like you are about to die from heat stroke – really stupid move.

We ate plenty of food from local vendors and street food and never got sick. Go for it! Choose places that are well frequented by locals. Make sure the food is piping hot before you tuck in and you should avoid food poisoning disasters.

It’s important to travel to Africa with adequate travel insurance! Check Visitor’s Coverage  and  World Nomads , and  SafetyWing  for prices and policies.

I was a little scared when we decided we were going to travel around East and South Africa independently.

The tours sounded safe and comfortable, but we really wanted more of an authentic experience.

With this came a certain amount of fear. But, my fears were alleviated as soon as we touched ground.

After almost five months of catching local transport, camping, and spending a lot of time with the locals, we had no dangers or horror stories to speak of – only challenging journeys, warm friendships made, and one out of the ordinary case of tick bite fever.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
