Things To Do

Things to do | popular attractions returning to african safari wildlife park on may 11 and 12.

A lemur will be on display May 11 and 12 at African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton. (Submitted)

The popular family destination is beginning its Extended Weekends on May 11 and 12, the release said.

During Extended Weekends, the Park’s Walk-Thru Safari — featuring kangaroos, warthogs, porcupines, lemurs, macaws and more than a dozen other species — reopens for the season; and attractions such as educational animal shows, camel rides and tortoise feedings return, according to the release.

Dinosaur Takeover, featuring more than 20 moving, roaring prehistoric creatures, also is included with general Park admission, the release said.

Extended Weekends run every Saturday and Sunday through Memorial Day weekend, when the Park beings to offer its full slate of attractions daily for the duration of the summer season, according to the release.

Discounted tickets for up to $14 off per guest are available for purchase on the Park’s website, www.africansafariwildlifepark.com, through Sunday evening.

Mysteries can be complicated but not as hard to follow as this one, which starts out promisingly enough.

African Safari Wildlife Park

Located not far from the shores of Lake Erie is the African Safari Wildlife Park, which is a featured drive-thru safari type park that features animals that will come up to your car. There are no dangerous (man-eaters) in the park, but there are quite a few animals with long tongues that might give your vehicle a good slobbering though! Tickets are purchased by the carload and each car is given a plastic cup with food. No food is allowed to be brought in. Visitors are given instructions on how to hold the cup so the animals can feed.

The park is divided into 3 areas: the drive-thru section where you can see plenty of 4-legged creatures, all of which you're given the opportunity of feeding from your car with a cup of food provided with your admission (additional food is available for an extra charge). Some of the animals are considered "Endangered Species" but for the most part, they are not, especially on the drive-thru section.

The other main section is a small zoo with a comfortable path that meanders in and around the cages. Included in this area are several animal opportunities where children can take a ride. There is also an interesting educational program where several animals are presented in an informative way and the kids can pet.

The other part of the park is more suited to a county fair and that is the pig races. Although they are entertaining and drew a large crowd, it seemed entirely out of place for an African Safari Wildlife park. Even so, it was fun to watch the kids cheer on for their assigned swine.

The park includes the usual gift shop plus cafe serving fast-food items, plus a good tasting ice cream parlor with plenty of outdoor seating for casual dining under the trees.

Location and admission

It must be remembered that you will be driving your vehicle through an area where there are some very large animals coming in close contact with you and your expensive vehicle. You are responsible for personal injuries or vehicle damage. Visitors are reminded that they are entering the area at their own risk.

During peak tourist times, lines can be long and travel through the park can be extremely slow and frustrating.

Prices vary with the number of people inside the vehicle. Some special admission rates include all the occupants. Discounts are published online and in various publications. Even without these coupons, zoo memberships and other organizations (i.e. AAA) will also earn you a steep discount.

The park is located just east of Port Clinton and about 20 minutes west of Cedar Point.

Dinosaurs Hatching at African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton, Ohio

Category Icon

Starting Father's Day weekend, park visitor will have the chance to experience the new Dinosaur Takeover.

A worker assembles the head of an animatronic dinosaur.

Generations of families have been experiencing wild animals at African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton. But starting this year, they can get a different kind of animal experience. Beginning on Father's Day weekend and running through Labor Day, visitors on the park’s walk-thru safari can see a Dinosaur Takeover. A total of 20 different dinosaurs, custom-fabricated for African Safari, will be on display, from the better-known ones including triceratops, tyrannosaurus rex and stegosaurus, to the more obscure ones like maiasaura, oviraptor and quetzalcoatlus. They’re constructed of foam and silicone rubber over a mechanized steel frame, so they can all move and roar, and they’re life-size (the T-Rex is 48 feet long, weighing in around 3,000 pounds). There are also opportunities to take pictures inside a dinosaur egg, and you can recreate your favorite doomed Jurassic Park minor cast member and take a picture in the T-rex’s mouth. “Dinosaurs have a universal, enduring appeal that inspires wonderment in all of us,” says Kelsey Keller, the Park’s director. The display is intended to also call attention to the idea of extinction. The dinosaurs disappeared 65 million years ago in what’s known as the fifth mass extinction, and African Safari cites a World Wildlife Federation report that says we’re currently in the middle of the sixth — driven in no small part by human activity. Dinosaur Takeover is included in every walk-thru safari, which features a variety of animals, including kangaroos, camels and a rare albino alligator, along a certified wildlife habitat. The park, in its 55th season of operation, also offers a drive-thru safari, featuring zebras, giraffes and llamas, as well as native birds, pollinators and plants. Also new this year is an expanded patio and deck outside of the Safari Café, which serves snacks, meals and desserts, including Toft’s Ice Cream, made nearby in Sandusky. 267 S. Lightner Road, Port Clinton, Ohio; 800-521-2660, africansafariwildlifepark.com
