IICA’s Caribbean Agritourism Network

Project proposals, national project concepts to strengthen agritourism linkages.

The IICA Caribbean Agritourism Network sees significant opportunities for building out agritourism linkages and experiences in the region. To further this objective, in 2019, IICA partnered with the former ACP-EU Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) to host national multi-stakeholder workshops in selected countries aimed at developing inter-sectoral policies and projects to strengthen linkages between tourism and the local agri-food sectors to ultimately lead to improved livelihoods and income of local farmers, rural dwellers and value chain actors.

Here, we present three Country Project Proposal Briefs which emanated from the IICA-CTA Agritourism Linkages Workshops in Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname. Full proposals can be provided on request. IICA and the countries are looking for partners to turn these concepts into reality.

Proposal abstract:

Agritourism—one of the fastest growing segments of agricultural direct marketing—allows farmers to diversify their core operations and keep farmland in production while preserving scenic vistas and maintaining farming traditions. By providing authentic farm experiences for visitors, agritourism helps educate the public about the importance of agriculture to a community’s economic base, quality of life, history, and culture. Agritourism is growing rapidly in the Northeast region, however the industry remains underdeveloped in many states, lacking technical assistance support, infrastructure, and networking opportunities to ensure best practices. The proposed project will provide tools to help farmers (1) determine whether an agritourism enterprise fits with a farm’s core business and at what cost; (2) prepare business and marketing plans; (3) assess and manage the risk of farm visitors; (4) comply with local, state and federal regulations; (5) leverage promotional activities of tourism and other agencies and organizations; (6) develop and deliver effective media tools; and (7) make use of technical assistance opportunities. To accomplish these objectives, collaborators from several states in the Northeast will develop a curriculum of core business skills training modules and deliver these modules through agritourism workshops and follow-up assistance. Workshops will be held in seven locations in the Northeast (Maine, Maryland/Delaware, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island/Massachusetts/Connecticut, Vermont, and West Virginia). Follow-up assistance for farmers interested in adopting new agritourism practices will be provided by agreements with agricultural, tourism, and business development staff in each state. Standardized surveys at workshops and one year later will form the basis for outcome measurement. Performance target: By the end of the two year project, at least 70 farmers in the Northeast will have adopted new agritourism practices that contribute to farm viability.

Performance targets from proposal:

MILESTONES 1. A minimum of one farmer and one service provider from each of the participating locations in the Northeast region (Maine, Maryland/Delaware, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island/Massachusetts/Connecticut, Vermont and West Virginia) commit to coordinate involvement in the proposed project for their respective states. This will ensure beneficiary input throughout the project and promote peer interaction and sustainable state-based leadership development (July – September 2008). 2. Collaborating farmers and service providers will develop curriculum of core business skills training modules, state-specific modules, and evaluation tools (September – December 2008). 3. Over 700 farmers in the Northeast region currently engaged in agritourism or considering diversifying into agritourism will participate in workshops and complete benchmark surveys (January – March 2009). 4. Over 140 farmers will identify agritourism practices they are considering adopting, including new venture concepts and areas for improvement. They will work with agricultural, tourism, or business resources in their respective states to plan and implement the changes. These farms will take at least one action that helps them (1) start a new agritourism venture, (2) improve an existing venture, or (3) decide not to begin a venture or activity based on business analysis (January 2009 – March 2010).

PERFORMANCE TARGET By the end of the two year project, at least 70 farmers in the Northeast will have adopted new agritourism practices that contribute to farm viability.

Enriched with biodiversity, cultural, and historical significance, the northern province has a high ecotourism potential. However, the province has not been achieved its full potential for ecotourism development even after the armed conflict. A one-year study was conducted from April 2020 to May 2021 to investigate the ecotourism potential. Data were collected through an online questionnaire survey and field visits. The ecotourism potentiality was evaluated using Pralong's method selecting 20 prominent places. Potentiality map for the northern province was produced using ARC GIS 10.3 software. According to the survey, the majority (89%) answered that there is a high potential for the northern province to develop as an ecotourism destination. However, there are several hindrances for this namely lack of community and institution participation, lack of infrastructure, lack of transportation, and the lack of accessibility. According to the analyzed map, the Jaffna district has the highest potentiality for ecotourism development, followed by Mannar, Killinochchi, and Mullaittivu. The Vavuniya district has a low potential for ecotourism development. Therefore, necessary infrastructure development and promotional activities should be operationalized to improve the area as an ecotourism destination. Hence, the northern province has an amazing ecotourism potential for future ecotourism developments in Sri Lanka.

Ecotourism, according to standard definitions, belongs in the sustainable tourism category. Not only is the concept of ecotourism now a buzzword, it is also a widely practiced concept around the world with managers of natural areas increasingly involved in the practice of ecotourism. The present study assesses the existing ecotourism practices found at the Pitawala Patana Forest Reserve in Sri Lanka using three criteria: responsible travel to natural areas, contribution to environmental conservation, and sustainment of the well-being of the local community. The study used a questionnaire survey and Participatory Rural Appraisal techniques for this assessment which reveal that ecotourism practices at the Pitawala Patana Forest Reserve currently constitute 52.54 percent overall of its practices, although benefits to the local community were not at a satisfactory level. The results indicate that visitors wish to experience new ecotourism-related activities, while the local community ar...

Moscow Metro Station Proposal

Variant Studio

Moscow, Russia

A proposal by London-based design and architectural studio VariantStudio to create a noise-absorbing metro station. The station would be covered in porous ceramic panels that would absorb the train noise and the echo from the tunnels, therefore providing a more relaxed atmosphere in the station and creating a much more positive journey. The quietest metro station in the world? Possibly!

Design Team

agri tourism project proposal

In the subway tunnels and its premises, the underground trains and a constant passenger flow create a lot of noise and a strong echo. The conceptual idea of the architectural design for Novoperedelkino station in Moscow is to cover the walls and ceilings with acoustic and sound absorbing elements, therefore reducing the possibility of the sound waves to bounce off the walls and ceilings and create echo.

The three dimensional pyramid and prism panels would be created from lightweight and porous ceramic, that would be sound absorbing and fire safe. The finishing of the station would not only absorb noise, but it would be also used as an element for passenger navigation. The walls, floor and ceiling would form a pattern that would point the way to the platform, nearest exits and indicate from which side the train is approaching, therefore helping the passengers to navigate easier in the subway station. Walls and ceilings are created in a neutral ochre tone, but functionally significant elements that require attention are highlighted in more bright blue indigo.

Though the station requires only low and simple maintenance, we've also developed an innovative solution for cleaning the platform wall. The platform walls would be cleaned with a method used in car washing—during the nighttime, incorporated brushes move along the wall and remove tough train grease.

The visual language of the entrance pavilions reflects the main purpose of the station: simple movement. The area between the pavilions is provided with multi-level green zones, pedestrian walkways, shrubs, flowerbeds and recreation zones. Just like the station itself, the green zone is designed to absorb noise from the nearby highway. The bushes are planted and trimmed, therefore absorbing a noise of 40 decibels from the passing vehicles.

Architectural design will provide the passengers comfort and safety.

The quietest metro station in the world? Possibly!

I realize you left the brushes uncovered for visualization purposes, but as I'm sure you know, they would have to be covered so as not to fling grime on passersby! Also, I couldn't help but notice the benches facing the tracks and thought I would paste this:   http://www.core77.com/posts/35103/Designing-a-Solution-to-Stop-Drunks-from-Falling-Off-of-Subway-Platforms  -  For consideration

There are many Montreal stations that had a bright style to them when new.  Now, half the lights are continually burned out and spider webs seem to never be removed.  Let alone the inevitable filth of 100,000 people bumping in and out everyday.
