Best Breweries in Alaska – Your Beer Tour of the Last Frontier

Last Updated on June 29, 2023

Alaska might be a massive state with many remote wilderness areas, but it’s also a place with lots of amazing breweries! Beer lovers shouldn’t miss the chance to visit the breweries in Alaska and pick your own favorite. You can even build your trip around visiting breweries with this brewery to brewery road trip across Alaska!

Alaska has one of the highest breweries per capita of any state and Alaskans love their beer and support local breweries whole heartedly! This article will share some beloved favorites as well as relative newcombers from Alaska’s biggest city of Anchorage to small remote towns and everything in between. With Alaska’s craft beer scene growing rapidly, there are likely to be even more than I don’t know about yet, so let me know if I missed one of YOUR favorites.

In addition to long term crowd pleasers like the Alaskan Brewery and Silver Gulch, there are lots of small microbreweries all over the state. Many feature creative Alaska names and Alaskan twists on old favorites (like spuce tips and rhubarb) with lots of seasonal beers and interesting experiments with local ingredients.

We’ll wrap up the list with an ideal road trip featuring some of the best breweries in Alaska (and plenty of other fun things to do near them).

*skip straight to the self guided beer road trip *

Breweries in Anchorage (and nearby)

A glass of beer on a bar. The glass says 49th State brewing company, Anchorage Alaska, one of the breweries in Alaska

Anchorage has at least nine breweries so there’s plenty of opportunity to enjoy some fantastic beer in town.

You really need to go to Moose’s Tooth ( Broken Tooth Brewing ) which is an extremely popular local pizza place with their own beer that always has a long wait. It’s totally worth it though and their sister restaurant, Bear Tooth has a movie theatre and is an Anchorage institution. You get the same amazing beer and pizza at both.

The Glacier Brewhouse is another very popular local establishment with good food along with their tasty beer.

A newer excellent spot for a delicious meal with your beer is 49th State Brewing , with Alaskan themed burgers and other interesting brewpub fare such as crab grilled cheese. You can also get a quesadilla with yak meat, tuna nachos and of course halibut tacos! 49th State also has a location in Healy near Denali National Park which is also excellent.

Clustered together for easy crawling are Midnight Sun Brewing (the oldest in Anchorage) and Magnetic North , and not far from them is another cluster of breweries. Anchorage Brewing Company , King Street Brewing Company and Turnagain Brewing round out this south side brewery zone.

While you’re in the area, don’t miss out on Double Shovel Cider Company, which makes some really good cider.

R esolution Brewing and Cynosure Brewing are newer with fewer tourists though very popular with locals. Cynosure is a must visit for anyone who loves Belgian beer.

A couple of other breweries that are not in Anchorage but are nearby include Girdwood Brewing Company in Girdwood and Odd Man Rush Brewing in Eagle River.

Breweries in Fairbanks

a beer in a glass next to a window with snow outside at a brewery in alaska. The glass has the outine of the shape of the state of alaska

Fairbanks is home to three excellent breweries! When I lived there, Silver Gulch was the only brewery in town and it’s a great choice. Enjoy their classic and popular beer in a historic roadhouse with a full menu. Pro tip – you can also try Silver Gulch at the Anchorage airport.

Black Spruce and HooDoo have opened their taprooms more recently and they both have plentiful outdoor seating for Fairbanks’s long sunny summer days and amazing beer! Black Spruce is one of my personal favorite breweries in Alaska.

Breweries in the Mat-Su Valley and Talkeetna

alaskan brewery tour

If you’re heading out of Anchorage towards Denali National Park and Fairbanks, you’ll pass through the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, also known as Mat-Su. The Mat-Su Valley is home to four breweries.

Palmer is home to the Matanuska Brewing Company with it’s home in a historic dairy. It is also home to the tiny Bleeding Heart Brewing, which is a must visit for true beer lovers who really want to talk beer while enjoying it. Akrose Brewing has really good German style beers with an Alaska spin.

Bearpaw Brewing in nearby Wasilla has excellent beer as well as tasty pizza and salads.

You really need to detour to the town of Talkeetna between Anchorage and Denali National Park! Not only is this small, quirky town full of mountain climbers and climbing rangers and lots of climbing Denali activity, it has a wonderful brewery. This brewery pumps out a ton of beer all over Alaska and also has really good food. It’s not just beer either! Denali Brewing Company also has it’s own mead (must try) cider (also must try) and spirits including gin and whiskey (again – must try!).

Breweries on the Kenai Peninsula

The relatively new Cooper Landing Brewing Company is one of my favorites, conveniently located on the Sterling Highway between the Seward Highway turn and Cooper Landing. They have an expansive tasting room and lots of outdoor space, some of which is covered and has firepits. They also have a fantastic food truck with lots of hot and cold sandwiches.

There are plenty of other options on the Kenai Peninsula, including the Seward Brewing Company in Seward. Soldotna has a couple of craft breweries, remarkable for a very small town! St Elias Brewing and Kenai River Brewing both have food along with their beer.

A required stop for beer lovers is the slightly out of the way Kassiks Brewery in Nikiski, a very small brewery that welcomes you for a tour and of course good beer.

Breweries in Southeast Alaska

Southeast Alaska has a beer brewing tradition that goes back much earlier than those in Anchorage, Fairbanks and the Kenai Peninsula!

The mother of all Alaska breweries that distributes across the entire state of Alaska and much of the Western US, the Alaskan Brewery is located in Juneau. You’re not likely to encounter a bar in Alaska that does not have Alaskan Amber on tap. Many bars in Seattle and across the Pacific Northwest and the West have Alaskan Brewery’s beer on tap too. It is also the oldest continually operating brewery in Alaska, since the mid 1980s.

In addition to their famous, crowd pleasing Alaskan Amber, they have a wide variety of beers available. Alaskan Amber is my personal favorite Alaskan beer, though I know a lot of that is just nostalgia!

If you like smaller operations better, then you’ll find plenty of other options in Juneau, including Devil’s Club Brewing downtown and Fordbidden Peak Brewery “out the road” in Auke Bay.

Many of Southeast Alaska’s very small towns have excellent breweries despite their small size! Ketchikan, Sitka, Hoonah and Skagway also sport their own tasty beers. Skagway is home to Alaska’s oldest brewery, Skagway Brewing Company, opening in 1897! It has not been continually operating since then, so technically the Alaskan brewery is older. If you’re stopping in Skagway, make sure to go!

Beer tours in Alaska

If you’re not wanting to do a big road trip or you want to drink more beer without having to drive, you have a few options for your beer oriented Alaska trip.

Big Swig Tours offers an afternoon beer tour of Anchorage taking you to four breweries around town in the afternoon. They also offer a version that involves morning biking before the beer. They also offer beer tours on the train, taking you to either Girdwood or Talkeetna and trying beer there, as well as taking in the amazing scenery from the Alaska Railroad!

7 day self guided beer road trip tour of Alaska

A fence with tables and tents over the tables at one of the breweries in Alaska. There is a large brown building and trees around a gravel parking lot next to the tents

This recommended beer oriented road trip includes some of the best breweries in Alaska while also seeing lots of amazing sites. For ideas for what else to add into your beer tour, read my full guide to planning a trip to Alaska and itineraries here .

I’ve set this up to be round trip from Anchorage, because most visitors fly into Anchorage and one way car rental is extremely expensive. You could also do this trip round trip out of Fairbanks, or split the trip into a 4 day or 3 day trip going either just to Talkeetna, Denali and Fairbanks or the Kenai Peninsula. No matter how you choose to do it, you won’t be disappointed by the beer or the many other activities you can take in on your trip!

If you have more time or you really love driving and going to quirky towns, head all the way to Homer at the end of the road on the Kenai Peninsula to visit the Homer Brewing Company and check out the Salty Dawg Saloon (which is not a brewery, but has plenty of beer in a unique and well known establishment). You can also spend more time at any of your beer stops, especially Fairbanks , Denali National Park , Anchorage and Seward .

The chart is a summary of the itinerary, with details below.

Day 1 – Anchorage to Talkeetna

Talkeetna has big atmosphere and big beer for such a small town! The jumping off point for climbing Denali, the climbing rangers are based here and the town is very oriented around climbing Denali. It’s fun and funky and of course it has delicious beer. Talkeetna is well signed and slightly off the main highway, a very worthwhile detour!

Denali brewing company also has local cider and spirits. The use lots of locally grown Alaskan ingredients in their delicious food too.

Breweries : Denali Brewing Company

Other activities : Hatcher Pass for hiking, exploring the town of Talkeetna, epic views

Day 2 – Talkeetna to Fairbanks

You’ll drive right past the entrance to Denali National Park today, well worth spending a couple days and taking the bus tour into the park. I have visiting Denali National Park on the way back, but you can do it either way. There are plenty of ways to spend an inviting afternoon and evening in Fairbanks!

Breweries : Silver Gulch (full restaurant as well as beer), Hoodoo Brewing and Black Spruce

Other activities : Epic views along the highway, walking along the river in Fairbanks, visiting Chena Hot Springs

Day 3 – Fairbanks to Healy (Denali National Park)

You’ll get to Healy a few miles before you get to Denali National Park and I recommend going to Denali on this day because it’s a shorter driving day. If you’re staying in Denali a few days you can do that at this point in the itinerary. If you didn’t plan on staying in Denali or you don’t want to take the bus tour, you can still head to the visitor center, visit the sled dog kennels and hike Mt Healy. However you do it, either stop at 49th State on the way, or backtrack slightly to it after visiting the park.

Breweries : 49th State Brewing (also has a location in Anchorage, full menu with excellent food as well as beer)

Other activities: Denali National Park visitor center, Mt Healy hike, rafting the Nenana River, Denali sled dog kennels

Day 4 – Healy to Girdwood

Today takes you back to Anchorage and slightly beyond to the small skiing oriented town of Girdwood. Where there is skiing and hiking, there will be beer and pizza! Grab some of the best at Chair 5 (be ready for a wait, it’s worth it).

Breweries : Girdwood Brewing Company (often a crepe food truck outside!)

Other activities : Hike the Winner Creek trail, ride the Alyeska Resort gondola

Day 5 – Girdwood to Soldotna

Today you’ll head down to the Kenai Peninsula with plenty of wonderful places to stop along the highway. Several breweries are ready to meet you when you get to Soldotna and the town of Kenai!

Breweries : St Elias Brewing (Soldotna – also a full menu), Kenai River Brewing (Soldotna- full menu), Kassik’s Brewery (Nikiski – taproom only)

Other activities : Fishing charter, fishing, hiking, salmon and bear watching

Day 6 – Soldotna to Seward

alaskan brewery tour

Today you’re heading to the delightful and gorgeous town of Seward. Make sure to stop in Cooper Landing along the way at Cooper Landing Brewing (one of my personal favorites!). Cooper Landing is one of the newest breweries in Alaska.

Breweries : Cooper Landing Brewing Company (has a delicious food truck with a variety of hot and cold sandwiches)

Other activities : Fishing charter, fishing, hiking, Kenai Fjords National Park , Alaska Sealife Center

Day 7 – Seward to Anchorage

Head back to Anchorage in time to spend the afternoon rounding out your visit to breweries in Alaska on a beer tour of Anchorage or a self guided Anchorage pub crawl! There are at least 10 breweries in Anchorage so you’ll need more time to hit all of them, but here are a few of my favorites

Breweries : Moose’s Tooth/Broken Tooth Brewing (local favorite and amazing pizza), Midnight Sun Brewing, King Street Brewing Company (for IPA lovers especially), Cynosure or Turnagain Brewing (for Belgian style especially)

Other activities : Alaska Wildlife Conversation Center, Flattop Mountain hike , bike the Coastal Trail

I’m a born and raised Alaskan who spent the golden years of my early 20s drinking as much Alaskan beer as humanly possible. My friends and I used to hike a local mountain, Flat Top, on the summer solstice and drink beer as we watched the midnight sun dip just below the horizon to rise again shortly after. Then I moved to Munich, Germany – home of Oktoberfest. And, you know what I miss most about home? Without skipping a heartbeat, I can tell you I miss the beer from Alaska. Ok, maybe that’s not the first thing; I mean, my family is pretty high up there too… But, people in Germany always look at me like I am bananas when I say I miss Alaskan craft beer and the microbreweries of my home state, Alaska. The craft beer scene in Alaska is one of the best in the country. We rank 6th for the most breweries per capita (with several breweries opening since that ranking). Alaskans know how to brew good beer with an experimental and crafty population. I was a tour guide in Alaska for a short while, and one of the most common questions I got asked was where to find the best craft beers in cities like Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Seward, and Palmer. So, here is a local’s guide to the best breweries, beers, and ciders in Anchorage and Alaska and what to order while there. Also, when I say a guide to the best breweries, I mean almost every brewery in the state because they’re all the best. So, this is really just an overview of nearly every brewery you can find in the state.

Best Craft Beers & Breweries in Anchorage

Broken tooth.

Broken Tooth is one of my favorite brewers in the Anchorage area. We purchased several pony kegs from them to serve at our wedding, which was a hit. Not only do they brew excellent beers, but the tooth family includes Moose’s Tooth, which is currently the highest-grossing single-unit independent pizzeria in the United States, generating up to $6 million in gross revenue annually. It’s wild! Pizza aside, I go to Moose’s Tooth to sit at the bar and drink their beer, mainly because I can’t get a damn seat in the restaurant, even as a local. I’m a sucker for a good Amber, and I love their Northern Lights Amber, but order a sampler, add the Chugach Session and try one of their revolving creations like Scared Kiltless scotch ale. With a designated area for picking up beer, this is a great spot to refill your Growler or get a party pony keg.

Broken Tooth is a staple in the Alaska beer scene. Their brewery is not open for tours but stop by Moose’s or Bear’s Tooth to enjoy these refreshing beers and grab some pizza if you can get a table (during the week, right when they open is your best bet).

Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide-3

Odd Man Rush Brewing

I grew up in Eagle River, the little town that no one has heard of between Wasilla and Anchorage. Thankfully Odd Man Rush is putting us on the map! Three local hockey and beer lovers (AKA every single person in my hometown) founded this brewery. They wanted to experiment with beer while investing in their local community. It is a hit with the locals and tourists alike. Hockey is the essence of the design aesthetic, so if you’re looking for a relaxed place to watch hockey, talk about hockey, or just drink good beer, this is the place for you!

Anchorage Brewing Co.

The inside of Anchorage Brewing is a piece of art, as is each and every one of their beer labels. Seriously, their cans and bottles are genuine pieces of unique, local art. Thankfully the beer inside is just as pleasing. One of the bigger breweries in Alaska, they export nationally and internationally. You can stop by and see their beautiful brewery or grab their beers at Speciality Imports on Ingra in Anchorage. Try their Love Buzz Saison or grab a sampler to try them all.

Relatively new in the brewing scene, Cynosure specializes in Belgian Ales and Lagers. Whenever I miss my German and European-style beers, this is the place to go when I come home. Their Pils is the talk of the town and just won a pretentious judges award at a local festival.

Midnight Sun Brewing

Midnight Sun Brewing Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide

This authentic all-Alaskan brewery is the oldest in Anchorage. They specialize in barrel-aged stouts and barely wines crafted with flavors derived from Alaska’s long, cold, and dark winters. But, for the long, endless summer days, they brew IPAs and Belgian ales. The glacial-fed water is the special ingredient in all their brews. Make sure to stop by their brewery lofe and try one of 16 beers or 2 homemade sodas on tap to pair with their hearty food. Don’t miss the Sock-Eye Red IPA and Panty Peeler. They offer free Brewery tours every Thursday at 6 pm. They also refill your growlers and sell beer to go.

Mon-Fri 11 am – 8 pm Sat-Sun 10 am – 8 pm 8111 Dimond Hook Drive

King Street Brewing

King Street Brewing Anchorage Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide

King Street Brewing just upgraded to a nice fancy multi-floor tasting room. They focus on classics like Hefeweizen, Pilsner, and IPA, along with seasonal rotating beers. It’s a great social spot to grab a solid beer, sample their tasting menu, or grab a keg to go.

Mon-Thur: 2 – 8 PM Fri-Sun: 12 – 8 PM 9050 King Street

Resolution Brewing

This is a hidden gem, popular with locals. They have a relaxed vibe, a dog-friendly tasting room, and a bring your food policy. Local tip: There are lots of tasty nearby restaurants that serve to-go food. The owner, Cole, is knowledgeable, friendly, and hails from Colorado. Don’t miss their Arctic Abbey Belgian Dubbel or Smokey the Beer – smoked beer similar to the Rauchbier from Bamberg, Germany. It is located in a diverse up-and-coming part of Anchorage, Mountain View, giving you a great excuse to get away from all the tourists and enjoy a local scene.

Mon-Thur: 3 – 8 PM Fri-Sun: 12 – 8 PM 3024 Mountain View Dr

Girdwood Brewing

Girdwood Brewing Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide

Girdwood Brewing recently opened in one of my favorite towns, Girdwood, which has long needed a brewery of its own – and finally, it is here! Girdwood is known as the hippy ski town focusing on sustainable living, so it is no surprise Girdwood Brewing does its job to reduce waste, hire locals, and use local ingredients. Their brewery and tasting room have a modern design with vintage ski decor. The outdoor firepits will keep you warm year-round. It’s a friendly place to hang with the locals and drink good beer. Don’t miss their Down the Chute Kölsch and other unique brews. They offer private brewery tours and tastings for $20 when booked in advance.

Mon-Sun 12-8 pm 2700 Alyeska Hwy

Turnagain Brewing

Ted and Mary Rosenzweig have a lengthy background in the science and medical fields. They turned their passion for science into a love for scientific brewing. After one of the pair accepted a job as a surgeon here in Alaska, they brewed their way into the hearts of Anchorage locals. They spent a lot of time drinking their way through Belgium, and their brews are an homage to Belgian-style ale and sours. I love this because I also drank my way through Belgium and legit gained 3 kilos drinking beer and eating Pommes. They offer brewery tours on Sunday at 2 pm and pour 11 beers on tap.

Double Shovel

Double Shovel Anchorage Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide

If you’re a cider fan, this is the place for you! Double Shovel cider is the first and best micro-cidery in Alaska. The ciders are created with Alaskan (or Washington) apples, berries, and other local ingredients for fresh, fun flavors. Don’t miss their classic Forget-Me-Hopped, Appalanche, Pineapple, or a rotating special.

Various hours, closed Tuesday.

Glacier Brewhouse

The Glacier Brewhouse is probably the most famous tourist microbrewery in Anchorage and is on many tourists’ bucket lists. The Glacier Brewhouse has been around since 1995 and is a staple in the Anchorage microbrewery scene. However, if you ask me, the GB has some tough competition as of late and wouldn’t be my first go-to recommendation for a craft beer in Anchorage or Alaska. Regardless of how I feel, they have 13 award-winning beers, including their renowned Blonde. The restaurant is damn near impossible to get a seat, but if you sit at their bar- which opens an hour before the dining room- and order a flight, you’ll be drinking in no time.

Open for lunch and dinner. 737 W. 5th Avenue

Best Craft Beers & Breweries in Palmer & Wasilla

Bearpaw river brewing company.

Four local brothers run this brewery in a region called the Valley. They combined their brew mastery, business, and logistics talents to quickly win their way into the mouths of locals and tourists alike. As an Alaskan, I love that the names of their beers feature some of my favorite places in Alaska, such as Hatcher’s Pass Pale Ale. They’re an approachable brewery, so stop by to sample some beer and chat with the team.

Sun-Wed: 3 pm – 8 pm Thur-Sat: 12 pm – 8 pm 4605 E. Palmer-Wasilla Highway

Matanuska Brewing Company

The campus of Matanuska Brewing has a long history in Alaska agriculture history. When Mat-Maid, our local dairy producer, went out of business, many locals were sad to see such a massive part of our economy die. So, when Matanuska Brewing finally opened its doors in the dairy factory’s old bones, we were happy to see a revival in the economy and drink the great beer they produce. They have a small tasting room and are hoping to expand soon. Make sure to swing by to try their Snow Bike White. Their sister company is Glacier Brewhouse.

Mon-Sun: 3 pm – 8 pm 513 S Valley Way, Palmer

Arkose Brewing

If you are looking for German beer inspired by the flavors and wilderness of Alaska, then this is the place for you. Co-founders June and Stephen have lived in both Germany and Alaska. Each of their beers combines science and art with unique and traditional flavors. June’s label art has won awards, and it is worth buying one of each beer to take home as a piece of art. Stop by on Thirsty Thursdays for $3 pour, $5 howler fills, and $7 growler fills on select beers. Thursday is small-batch Thursday, where they serve up a small batch of craft beer, and when it’s gone, it’s gone.

Since I speak German, I love that they have German names like Kürbis Saison, translated to pumpkin season for their hearty seasonal pumpkin ale. Their staples like Amber Earth EBA and High Ridge Double Red are fantastic. If you ask me, they are one of the more unique breweries in Alaska.

Tue-Fri: 4 pm – 7 pm Sat: 1 pm – 7 pm 650 E. Steel Loop, Palmer

Denali Brewing

Denali Brewing Talkeetna Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide

This is another one of my favorite breweries in Alaska. I stop at Denali Brewing every trip to or from Denali. It is worth visiting the quirky town of Talkeetna to drink their tasty beer. If you’re hungry, stop by Denali Brewpub in the heart of Talkeetna to sample beers and get some bomb grub. If you’re a taproom kind of person, then stop by their Brewery on Talkeetna Spur Road. They offer fantastic brewery tours, probably the best in the state. You can reserve a few spots online, but they also welcome walk-ins on a first-come, first-serve basis. You need to book ahead in the winter, and in the summer, they have four tours, daily at 12, 1:30, 3, and 5 pm. Alongside the brewery, they also have a meadery, a cidery, and a distillery. My favorite will always be the Single Engine Red, but almost everything they make is gold. They are an employee-owned brewery with sustainable and ethical business practices, like unique waste management that is transforming the Alaskan and national beer industry.

Brewery & Tap:  Mon-Sun: 1 pm – 7 pm Mile 2 Talkeetna Spur Road, Talkeetna Brewpub: 13605 E Main Street, Talkeetna

Bleeding Heart Brewery

Alaska’s smallest brewery is located on a small colonial homestead in the charming town of Palmer. These guys love beer and hope to bring together the veteran beer drinker with the new-age craft beer aficionado over a glass of cutting-edge beer. Make sure you try their signature Bleeding Heart Beat IPA.

Best Craft Beers & Breweries in Juneau & Pan Handle

Alaskan brewing co..

Alaskan Brewing Co Anchorage Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide

Alaska’s most notorious and popular microbrewery, the Alaskan Brewing company, is seen in stores throughout Alaska, the US, and beyond. Locals Marcy and Geoff founded AK Brewing. They combine years of chemical engineering and a love for the outdoors into a creative brewing process. While researching brewing, Mary came across historical brewing techniques in Alaska before prohibition, and they created a recipe with roots dating back to the gold rush days. This beer, the Alaskan Amber, is one of my favorite beers. They also take inspiration from local ingredients like spruce tips and Alder smoke. Hop on the shuttle from downtown Juneau and grab a sample or tour their brewery.

Mon-Fri: 11 am – 6 pm 5364 Commercial Blvd, Juneau

Scuttlebutt Brewing (formerly Baranof Brewing)

When it first opened, Baranof Brewing was so popular with the locals they literally ran out of beer. Unfortunately, they were a victim of the pandemic. A company acquired them and rebranded the joint to Scuttlebutt brewery. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying their beers, but they are known for refreshing citrus, fruity, and floral beers, such as the Bali Ha’i Rosé Ale, which has notes of hibiscus and pomegranate.

Mon-Fri: 11 am – 8 pm

1209 Sawmill Creek Rd, Sitka

Skagway Brewing

While Alaska’s craft beer scene really started to explode in 2016, Skagway has been brewing since 1897 to quench the thirst of Klondike gold rush prospectors. In the modern brewing era, they hold their own with unfiltered ales created using hydroelectricity and pure, untreated Alaskan water. They have five core ales, including their famous Prospector Pale. However, the best beer on tap might be the Spruce Tip Blonde Ale, brewed with hand-picked Sitka spruce buds – a true Alaskan treat. People around Alaska and the world have asked for beer exports, but they keep things local, so be sure to buy a few beers to take home. They are making sustainability waves by using the excess carbon from the brewing process for their aeroponic indoor farm. The greens from the farm are used in their dining room, which serves excellent pub fare, a bar with local live music, a game room, and an outdoor patio.

Mon-Fri: 10 am – 10 pm Sat-Sun: 11 am – 10 pm 250 4th Ave, Skagway

Barnaby Brewing

Barnaby Brewing is one of Alaska’s best. One of my favorite things about them is they are women and Native-owned, so you can feel good about supporting a progressive business. While they are certainly not the oldest brewery in Juneau, they are proudly one of Juneau’s most award-winning brewery two years running. Barnaby focuses on American-style ales and lagers and occasionally dabbles in experimental beers. Their taproom is just for tasting, but you can have food delivered or bring your own. They are family-friendly but ask you to keep your kids on a leash ;) – Now, that is a policy I can support.

Closed: Sunday-Tuesday

Devil’s Club Brewing Company

Three Juneau boys with backgrounds in chemistry, business, and brewing came together to create the unique flavors of Devil’s Club. Devil’s club is a local plant used traditionally in Alaska for medicinal purposes. They pride themselves on contemporary American styles and modern takes on Belgian beers. Try their signature IPA or Banana Breakfast Cereal.

Icy Strait Brewing

The little town of Hoonah near the Icy Strait is a charming seaside village. Enjoy five classic beers on tap ranging from IPA to oatmeal stout, in a cozy tasting taproom. Pair your beer with an all-Alaskan smoked salmon fish board or a selection of gourmet grilled cheese. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Mon-Sun: 11 am – 8 pm 286 Front Street, Hoonah

Bawden Street Brewing

Bawden Street is the only microbrewery in historic Ketchikan. They specialize in ales, Saisons, and sours. They have a classic nautical theme and are a new brewery making waves in the scene. I have not tried them yet, but if you’ve been, leave a comment and let me know how you liked their beers!

Best Craft Beers & Breweries in Fairbanks & Interior

49th state brewing.

49th State Brewing Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide

What started as a humble brewery in Healy, Alaska, just north of Denali National Park, 49th State, has expanded to Anchorage for double the goodness. Their location in Anchorage has a fantastic rooftop with views of the Cook Inlet. But, if you have the time and means, I suggest you visit the OG location in Healy. The original spot is rustic and charming, with a great outdoor area where you can play lawn games, dance to local artists on stage, and enter the “Into the Wild Bus” (from the movie). They offer a shuttle from Denali National Park so that you can drink and relax. Bring your dog because they are pet-friendly. Their menu features many locally sourced types of meat and veggies, organic food, and a great vegetarian menu to pair with your beer. Order the sampler or the Cabin Fever Brown Ale and pair it with a local yak burger or vegan deep-fried avocado sticks. The owner is committed to revitalizing Anchorage’s sustainable farming industry and always chooses ethical and sustainable food choices.

248 Parks Hwy 5 mile, Healy 717 W 3rd Ave, Anchorage

Black Spruce Brewing Co.

This new brewery opened in 2018 to provide Fairbanks, Alaska, with world-class craft beers. Brewery tours are on Saturday at 2 pm. They are first come, first serve, and closed-toed shoes are required. In the summer, drink the Short Days Golden Ale, and in the winter, order the Long Nights Imperial Stout. You can enjoy their wood-fired pizza food truck in the parking lot if you get peckish.

Tue-Fri: 3 pm – 8 pm Sat: 12 pm – 8pm Sun-Mon: Closed 3290 Peger Rd STE B, Fairbanks

HooDoo Brewing Co

HooDoo is the long-standing staple brewery in Fairbanks, operating since the early 2000s. Inspired by traditional German beer, these guys are innovating with their twist. These total brewery geeks had state-of-the-art brewing equipment made just for them. They pride themselves on keeping it simple while avoiding complicated names and crazy experiments and are best known for a classic Kölsch – which is honestly very German of them. Free tours are offered Saturday at 4 pm; sign up by calling 907-459-2337 (BEER).

Tue-Fri: 3 pm – 9 pm Sat-Sun: 11 am – 8 pm Mon: Closed 1951 Fox Ave, Fairbanks

Silver Gulch

The Northernmost brewery in North America is just outside of Fairbanks and a total treat to visit. With origins dating back to 1997, they have a newly renovated brewery and showroom. They brew their beers to please the five senses and not to follow beer traditions. You must try the Fairbanks Lager or a seasonal Raspberry Ale.

Open 7 days, various hours 2195 Old Steese Hwy N, Fairbanks

Gakona Brewing

If you are heading to or from Canada, this adorable little brewery in Gakona should be on your list. This place embodies the Frontier Alaskan spirit. The brewery was born in 2012 but established in 2015, once they figured out all the legal aspects. Who needs a legal brewery when you’re from Alaska, anyway? What started as an at-home experiment turned commercial when the owner, Eddie, could barely even try his beer because it was being consumed so fast by the locals. Gakona is an Athabaskan word, meaning Rabbit River. Don’t miss the Dark Side of the Hare stout, mainly because the label has a bunny dressed like Darth Vader, but also because it is tasty. Of course, you can’t go wrong with the Killer Rabbie IPA.

Mon-Thur: 3 – 11 pm Fri-Sun: 11 am – 11 pm 5, Mile 0, Tok Cutoff, Gakona

Best Craft Beers & Breweries on the Kenai Penisula

Seward brewing company.

Seward Brewing Co Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide-5

The location of Seward Brewing Co. dates back to 1904, when it was called The Seattle Bar, before closing due to prohibition. Over the years, the building has changed until it became Seward Brewing, located in the heart of the charming fishing town. The Rockfish Red is my personal favorite. They close over the winter and open their brewery and pub for tourist season starting in May.

Mon-Sun: 11:30 am – 10 pm 139 4th Ave, Seward

Homer Brewing Company

The halibut capital of the world is also home to Homer Brewing Co. pouring fresh traditional country ales. While they don’t offer tours, you can order the sampler in the taproom, which is nestled under their brewery equipment, making you feel like you are on tour. You should try the Broken Birch Bitter or their seasonal Oktoberfest if you like bitter beer. If you’re not a beer drinker, you’ll be able to get their home-brewed Chai tea.

Mon-Sun: 12 – 7 pm 1411 Lake Shore Dr, Homer

Kassik’s Kenai Brew Stop

Frank and Debara Kassik own this Kenai brewery together and have been so successful they have tripled in size since starting their brewery in 2004. You can find these beers all over the state and even in Washington. state Stop by the taproom for a pint or take a growler to-go. Their Whalers Wheat is probably the most popular and liked even by non-beer drinkers.

Alaska Craft Beer, Cider, and Brewing Guide-36

Kenai River Brewing

Kenai River Brewing has 20 beers on tap and is the perfect pairing with your outdoor Alaskan adventure, from fishing to snow machining. They have a brand new location for tasting. Enjoy their Peninsula Brewer’s Reserve. Or, for those who love hops, you must try the Arctic XPA.

Mon-Sat: 12 – 8 pm Sun: 11 am – 2 pm 308 Homestead Lane, Soldotna

St. Elias Brewing

St. Elias is a charming family-owned brewery and brewpub. Their beers can only be purchased on site. During the summer you can find their classic Puddle Jumper Pale Ale and pilsner. In the winter, you’ll be able to try some unique microbrews, like a whiskey bourbon barrel-aged selection. Make sure you try their wood-fired pizza to pair with your beer.

Sun-Thur: 12 – 9 pm Fri-Sat: 12 – 10 pm 434 Sharkathmi Ave, Soldotna

Brewery Tours in Anchorage

If your goal is to work through Anchorage’s extensive 11+ breweries, you can plan a self-guided tour using the reliable Uber service, Taxis, or a sober driver. Alaska is not where you can get away with drinking and driving, so don’t do it. You can tour just by drinking samples in the taprooms or taking some of the breweries, like Denali Brewery, up on their public or private guided tours.

You can also book a guided tour through Big Swig Tours . They offer several tours, including some that pick you up from the cruise ship terminal, some that involve a scenic train ride, or just brewery hopping. They offer tastings, behind-the-scenes entry, and a sober, safe ride. Alaska Tours also offers a brewery tour through the Anchorage area.

Food Vendors at Alaskan Breweries

Alaskan Food Truck microbreweries

Besides all the fantastic craft beer, microbreweries, and cider in Alaska, we also have an exceptional food truck scene. Where there is beer, there is a food truck. Almost all of the breweries in Alaska have a rotating food truck selection in the parking lot. You’ll often have the option of crepes, poke bowls, wood-fired pizza, BBQ, and much more. In addition, most taprooms allow you to bring your food or order for delivery right to the taproom.

Alaska Taproom Laws & Drinking Regulations

Alaska has strict laws regarding breweries’ tasting rooms. In accordance with Alaska state law, you are only allowed to consume 36 ounces of beer or cider per person while at a brewery or taproom. You may take up to 5 gallons for home consumption. Most taprooms must close by 8 pm and have limited serving hours. Please do not drink and drive! Plan and be safe.

Make sure you save this guide to Alaska’s craft beer and microbrewery scene for your next trip up to Alaska. If you’re doing a pre-or post-trip cruise, you can hit up a dozen or so of these microbreweries in Alaska. But, if you choose the slow and sustainable route of exploring all parts of the state, I challenge you to visit a brewery in every region. You’ll be happy you did because Alaska beer is excellent; I bring it worldwide, even to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! Have you had Alaskan beer? Which was your favorite brewery?

Fascinating! I never thought there’d be so many breweries in Alaska! I still have a lot to learn.

' data-src=

Yes, Alaska has quite the craft beer and microbrewery scene!

Very cool, I don’t think I would think about Alaskan beer being so great but will definitely try when visiting. Thank you for the tips!

Yeah, we have lots of great options for craft beers in Alaska.

NIccceee Susanna!! Thanks so much for writing up such a cool blog post on the best Alaskan breweries. I’m planning a visit to ANC and Seward and Double Shovel and the food trucks are definitely on my list! Pure awesomeness and quite informative as now I know which breweries are suitable for me while eating a juicy burger! Lol!

Love that you already have your options picked out! Are you headed to Alaska soon? Enjoy the frosty craft beers!

We visited the Haines Brewing Company two years ago while cruising. Delicious beers!

I can attest to the Skagway Brewing Spruce Tip beer is fantastic too!

We can’t wait for another AK cruise. Enjoy!

Thank you for this post! My family and I are actually visiting Alaska within the next few weeks for a family vacation and we were pretty nervous and excited about the beer prospects. Growing up in North Carolina and living in Charleston, SC for quite a while, I have been really spoiled with the breweries in Charleston, Charlotte, and Asheville, and thus make a point to find out the best beer a town has to offer. I have recently even become obsessed with the sour beers and dark stouts at Low Tide Brewing out on Johns Island in South Carolina and wanted to find some great spots in Alaska where I could try some similar beers. This post provided everything we needed to know and will make our trip ten times better! thank you!!

From the photos, Midnight Sun Brewing looks interesting! I’ve always wanted to visit Alaska, but seeing that they have so many breweries that can be visited as well, makes me want to file that vacation leave asap.

Any idea on how to get any Alaskan beers in Europe (Belgium) ?

There is only one major exporter of Alaskan beer and that is the Alaskan Brewing Company. You can likely find them at speciality beer shops focusing on stocking global beers. We had one in Munich, so I am sure there is one in Belgium! If your local speciality shop doesn’t stock it, you can ask if that would be something they could consider. Good luck!

Juneau Breweries & Distilleries

Local drinks and craft producers.

The craft producers movement has taken off across the nation and Juneau is no exception. Local brewers and distillers are harvesting local ingredients to infuse in the most uniquely Alaskan brews and spirits. Visitors can sample everything from Sitka Spruce tips to rhubarb during a tour or tasting. Have a couple sips at the source then make your way to one of Juneau’s craft cocktail lounges or bars and saloons. Let your bartender serve up a house-made infusion or a variety of beers and wine.

How to plan a memorable first-time alaska cruise.

The remarkable scenery of Glacier Bay is a highlight on many Alaskan cruise itineraries.

Embark on a journey through Alaska's pristine wilderness aboard a cruise ship, where you can experience the awe-inspiring nature of the last American frontier in comfort.

As you glide past icy fjords and into secluded bays, seize the chance to witness magnificent glaciers up close, and keep your eyes peeled for the mighty bears, whales and eagles that call this rugged landscape home.

However, don't make the mistake of thinking you’ll have peace and quiet. Remote it may be, but Alaska is one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations.

Ports such as Skagway can accommodate up to four large cruise ships at once. Smaller ports can easily become overwhelmed with visitors, while popular shore excursions sell out well in advance. As such, there’s a lot to understand about Alaska cruises before booking.

Cruise Lines In Alaska

Most major cruise lines sail in Alaska, ranging from large, modern ships full of amenities, down to smaller, older ships with more outside space and a relaxed vibe. Expedition cruises on even smaller ships focus more on wildlife and geology.

When picking a line and ship, consider your choice of cabin carefully. Although inside cabins offer a cheaper deal, the value of a balcony cabin shouldn't be underestimated. On scenic cruising days, you’ll be able to enjoy the landscape—and potentially wildlife—without jostling for position.

Alaska Cruise Itineraries Explained

There are two main types of Alaskan cruise itinerary: the Inside Passage roundtrip, and a one-way Gulf voyage. Each route offers unique opportunities to see both glaciers and wildlife, with specifics depending on the season.

Apple iPad 2024 Release Date: Your Final, Complete Guide To What And When

Katy perry met gala dresses go viral but they re ai fakes, huawei pura 70 ultra global version just available with features that outdo samsung galaxy.

Alaska is a popular cruise destination in the summer.

Seven-night Inside Passage cruises typically depart from hubs like Seattle or Vancouver, calling at popular stops like Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway. Many feature a scenic cruising tour of the breathtaking Glacier Bay National Park.

For example, this 7-night itinerary on Norwegian Encore including all those highlights is available between April and October in both 2024 and 2025.

For those seeking deeper exploration, one-way Gulf voyages include the highlights of the Inside Passage route, but also venture closer to the Arctic Circle. Typically, such itineraries start or end at Whittier or Seward near Anchorage.

This 7-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises includes port calls at Sitka, the historic Icy Strait Point, and scenic cruising of the Hubbard Glacier on the way from Vancouver to Seward.

Some cruise lines combine Gulf voyages with curated tours before or after the cruise for a comprehensive Alaska experience. Such tour packages include famous rail journeys, visits to Denali National Park, and optional overnight stays in Anchorage or Fairbanks.

Longer Alaskan cruise itineraries, especially those on smaller ships or expedition lines, may include remote locales like Kodiak Island and the Aleutian Islands.

Port Excursions In Alaska

Exploring ashore on guided excursions is a highlight of any Alaskan cruise. Each port offers unique opportunities to engage with the natural environment and local culture, but the popularity of cruising in the region means advance booking is essential.

Some of the most popular tours may fill up just days after they go on sale, in some cases months before the actual cruise. Consider independent tour options, but read the terms and conditions carefully and check for reviews from previous cruisers.

Mendenhall Glacier is a popular cruise excursion from Juneau on Alaska cruises.

Alaskan capital Juneau is renowned for its glacier tours and wildlife viewing opportunities. The hike through backcountry to the Mendenhall glacier requires a good level of physical fitness, while whale watching boat trips are just as popular.

The historic Skagway train tour along the Klondike route in a vintage coach, featuring stunning vistas and rich gold rush era history, is a must-do.

Cultural tours in Ketchikan often include visits to the Saxman Native Village, where totem poles and traditional dance performances offer insight into the local Tlingit culture.

When To Cruise Alaska

Alaska is not a year-round cruising spot, and the season is shorter than most leading cruise destinations. Alaska’s cruising season ranges from late April to late September.

April : Expect relatively dry days, though not completely devoid of light showers and fog. Bears are only just emerging from their winter slumber so sightings are unlikely, but you may see eagles and humpback whales.

May : With more ship options, relatively dry weather, long hours of daylight, and good value fares, May is a popular time to cruise Alaska before the peak. Wildlife, including migrating shorebirds, whales, and bears, are more visible.

June : Mild temperatures and long daylight hours—up to 19 per day—provide optimal cruising conditions. Enjoy vibrant greenery and more wildlife sightings, but prepare for the possibility of mosquitoes (especially on trips inland) and variable weather.

July : July brings mild temperatures, often reaching the 70s, but it's also the start of the wetter period. Expect long hours of daylight ideal for wildlife sightings, including salmon runs and bear activity. However, peak cruise season means high fares, busier ships, and busier ports. Local produce starts to feature heavily on menus shoreside.

Juneau, Alaska, has a spectacular natural setting and is a gateway to many exciting outdoor ... [+] experiences.

August : Expect rain, with daytime temperatures in the low to mid-60s and nights cooling to the upper 40s, and ample wildlife viewing opportunities, as bears and bald eagles are active near salmon streams. Fares, along with the number of daylight hours, fall later in the month.

September : Expect cooler temperatures and frequent rain, which may risk the success of outdoor excursions. Despite less demand, wildlife viewing remains good with bears still active near salmon streams and whales still present in coastal waters. September also offers a chance to see the northern lights .

What To Pack For Alaska Cruises

Packing smart for an Alaska cruise means being prepared for both adventure in the great outdoors and the comforts of cruise life.

An Alaskan journey demands attire for cooler climates. Essentials include a fleece jacket, thermal socks, and a warm hat to combat the cold, along with sweaters and thermal underwear for effective layering. Waterproof gear such as a reliable rain jacket and waterproof pants are crucial for unexpected rain or snow showers.

You should also consider waterproof bags to protect your electronics and important documents during shore excursions.

Sun protection is vital due to the deceptive Alaskan sun. High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are necessary to guard against UV rays and snow glare.

Footwear should include waterproof hiking boots for rugged terrain and slip-proof sandals for the deck, accompanied by thermal or wool socks for additional warmth.

For shore excursions, a collapsible backpack and a thermal water bottle will keep you organized and hydrated, while binoculars can greatly enhance wildlife tours. A simple first aid kit, sea-sickness bands, and insect repellent are other wise packing choices.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
