WHY HIKE THE ALPS WITH WILDLAND?

alps trekking tours

1. TOP RATED ADVENTURE TOURS

Wildland began offering trips in 2005 and quickly became one of the top-rated trekking companies in the world. Over the last decade and a half, we have accrued more than 4,000 5-star reviews online and earned #1 spots on multiple Trip Advisor pages. Beyond Trip Advisor, other review sites where Wildland has 5 stars include Trust Pilot, Google and Yelp.

3. ALL-INCLUSIVE TRIPS

Another crucial factor in the quality of a hiking tour is what’s included. A huge benefit of joining a guided trip is the ability to travel light and let other people handle all the complicated logistics. On Wildland trips your local transportation, gear, meals, reservations and permits, supports staff, emergency communication devices, first-aid kits, risk management systems and more are fully handled by us. You get to focus 100% on fun and hiking through the Alps’ stunning landscapes!

5. HAND-PICKED ACCOMMODATIONS & RESTAURANTS

The Alps are renowned for their amazing hotels and incredible cuisine. On Wildland trips the lodging and restaurants we visit are carefully selected for their location, character and exceptional quality. We strive to take guests on unforgettable trekking journeys through the Alps, and the lodging and food are major components of these once-in-a-lifetime trips!

2. ALWAYS SMALL GROUP TRIPS

Many adventure tour companies try to book up to 18 or 24 guests per trip. At Wildland we cap our trips at 12 guests, and many trips run at 6-10 guests. This intimate group size allows participants the ability to truly interact with the trip leaders and each other in meaningful, memorable ways. It also allows things like hiking pace and dietary preferences to be much more customized to each person. Bottom line, smaller groups equal higher quality experiences.

4. LOCAL, EXPERT WILDLAND GUIDES

Ultimately the Wildland product consists of three main elements: the setting, the logistics (food, gear, transportation…etc.) and the guide(s). Of these three components, we believe the guides are the most important in terms of guest experience. That’s because the other two can change and how the guide handles it determines the outcome. We bring local guides who know the Alps inside and out onto our team, and we train them to meet the high Wildland standards. This combination gives guests the best of both worlds: local guides and a top-tier guided experience.

MORE ABOUT ALPS TREKKING TOURS

Why an alps hiking vacation.

The Swiss Alps, Italian Alps, and French Alps together comprise one of the world’s most beautiful and adventure-rich mountain regions. With soaring, glaciated peaks; lush alpine valleys; unique wildlife; and stunning panoramas, the Alps offer a wealth of trekking opportunities. But that’s only the beginning. The Swiss Alps, Italian Alps, and French Alps also offer wonderful backcountry huts, charming mountain hamlets, amazing European cuisine, and fascinating history. The Alps truly offer trekking and traveling experiences that are unique and difficult to match anywhere else!

SHOULD I HIKE THE ALPS WITH A GUIDE?

Many people hike the Alps with a trekking guide, and many do it on their own. The advantages of going with an Alps trekking company are many. At Wildland, we take care of all logistics including permits, accommodations, transportation, meals, gear, and more. Additionally, hiking the Alps does contain inherent risk, and going with a guide company adds an increased level of safety. The mountains are high with potential for extreme weather year round, and they are home to mandatory river crossings, snowfields, and glaciers. Additionally, the distances and elevations required between mountain villages is often significant, and so the hiking can be demanding and remote. Our guides also offer expert interpretation of the natural and cultural history of the region, which is a highlight for many guests.

MAKE THE MOST OF AN ALPS HIKING HOLIDAY

If you join an Alps hiking tour, we recommend adding time on the front and back to make the most of your holiday. The Swiss Alps, French Alps, and Italian Alps, are of course surrounded by amazing natural and cultural travel destinations. We heartily recommend adding a visit to the French or Italian Rivieras, where coastal towns offer history, beauty, and culinary delights. Or adding a visit to Europe’s wine country is a worthwhile addition – Italy’s famous Tuscany region or France’s Bordeaux region are both fantastic. Finally, some of Europe’s big cities offer tremendous history, architecture and, again, amazing cuisine: Rome, Milan, and Paris are of course some of the best cities to add to your visit.

The Mt. Rainier Inn trip with Wildland was perfect. The Inn was comfortable; the guide was an expert in his field; the pacing was just right to accommodate all those on the trip; the scenery was ideal. If you can go please do.

What Makes Our Alps Hiking Tours Special?

  • Expert Trip Leaders — Well-trained, experienced mountaineers with a passion for the Alps, our leaders infuse each trip with local knowledge and plenty of fun! We always have two (sometimes even three!) leaders on our Alps trips so you can hike at your own pace, opt for van pick-up, or choose your preferred hiking route (on select trips).
  • Carefully Planned Itineraries  — Experience an adventure designed to take you far from the crowds into the pristine heart of the Alps. Our itineraries span six countries and feature alpine hiking trails (several crossing international borders!) to mountain villages and secluded inns you’d never think to find on your own.
  • Exquisite Accommodations — We’ve hand-picked our lodgings, from luxurious hotels to historic mountain inns. At the end of the day, you can count on a warm welcome and charming alpine views, along with convenient access to the trails.
  • 45 Years’ Experience — Thanks to our longstanding relationships in the region, we’ll be treated like friends and family along the trail. Our local experience means we have the insider’s edge; we know where to find the best views and even the best spots for lunch!

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

We had a great time hiking the Italian Alps and especially loved the variety of the hikes and the four different countries and cultures we experienced. Once again, Wilderness Travel has exceeded our expectations and has shown why they continue to rack up awards as the best travel company for hiking experiences! Thanks to the entire company for never failing to delight us!
This was an ideal vacation for us: being in the mountains all day, at the peak of wildflower season, with two guides who were both knowledgeable and fun to be with, having a good hotel at night, and great French food in the evenings.
A once in a lifetime experience where the beauty of the mountains, the quality of the food/lodging and the hiking challenge were just magnificent.
Amazing trip, well planned, flexible staff and itinerary. Staff had great relationships with hotel and lodging hosts, chefs, making it even more special! What could be better than to have a world class mountain guide steering you around a beautiful setting like the Dolomites?
Excellent does not come close to describing my experiences on this trip. It was way beyond excellent for me. It was the best time of my life! The Alps were like a fantasy world and the guides made them real for me.
This trip really exceeded my expectations. The variety of hikes, the awesome scenery, the added benefit of two wonderful guides—it was one of the best trips I have ever taken!
A wonderful trip. WT consistently impresses me with their level of service. Most importantly, the guides are superior to any other service I’ve used. You feel completely at ease and supported by their level of professionalism.

Self-Guided Tours

Pizza illustration.

Self-guided tours are a great balance between the structure of a guided tour and planning a trip all on your own.

Our self-guided tours are carefully organized trips that combine the freedom to hike and travel on your own with your own personal travel planner. We’ll organize all of the reservations and logistics, buy appropriate rail passes, recommend favorite hikes and sights, and arrange a trip that meets your specifications.

There’s no guide and no group, so you’ll make your own decisions, choose your own pace, and enjoy Switzerland at your leisure. As Swiss travel specialists, we’ll fill you with knowledgeable advice and superb vacation plans. You do the rest.

If you want flexibility and privacy, we’ll give you the support you need to navigate on your own.

We describe each of your destinations in depth, noting activities and sights of particular interest, and providing you with choices for rainy days or taking a rest..

You will receive a personal information packet complete with daily itineraries, hotel confirmations, detailed hiking route descriptions, topographic maps of your hikes, train schedules, and specialized information about the regions you’ll be visiting.  Most tours include rail passes and luggage transfers.  Clients with non-US addresses, you will receive your materials digitally.

This is your personal guidebook, so we also help you with what to pack, how to get in shape for walking in the Alps, how to phone home, and what to do if your plans change en route.  And if you have any questions or need any help, we are always just a phone call away.

We have a lot of great itineraries like the Tour du Mont Blanc, Bernese Oberland Traverse and Dolomite Traverse to choose from, but our self-guided tours can be easily customized to meet your specific needs… make them longer or shorter, stay in rustic inns or luxury hotels, or a bit of both (why not)!  Choose any day to start – this is your tour.  If you can let us know your dream trip, we’ll make it work for you.

Just want to thank you for a wonderful trip to Italy’s Dolomites. Your package with hike descriptions, accommodations and other recommendations was spot on. We didn’t even get lost, which is unusual for us. Loved the food especially the Kaiserschmarrn at Gostner Schwaige. We were welcomed even though we were soaking wet. As we came out the hut the rain turned to snow. It snowed the rest of the way to Schlernhaus but made for a beautiful hike the next day with fresh snow and lots of sunshine. After that the weather was perfect. We had strudel at most every stop, which became a favorite for everyone. Will be happy to give comments or recommendations to prospective hikers. Thanks also for the additional tee-shirt. Will wear it proudly.

Words simply cannot express my excitement at receiving our travel packet.  It arrived the Friday before I flew out and I was simple blown away by the quality of resources you and your team put together.  Receiving everything before I flew out gave Scott and I a wonderful holiday to look forward to!

Amazing trekking through the alps. It was a challenge so be prepared! Our tour leader Diane was AMAZING. Everything was well organized and ran smoothly. Highly recommend if you like trekking.

Mont Blanc Explorer Tour

Mont Blanc Explorer

We hiked the Chamonix to Chamonix in September 2018. The hike was strenuous and challenging at times. Our guide Tom was great at judging our progress and rest requirements. He was very knowledgeable and Safety was always his first priority. The mountain accommodation was bunks in dorms but all refuges were comfortable and the food was good. The two hotels were comfortable probably 3 star. This was our first g adventure trip and we would use the company again.

Following are the things that should be included in your future offerings. - Tours should include some thrilling activities such as speed boat riding, 3D/VR experience, skydiving or other similar activities as an add-on options wherever available in the countries included in the package. This is because mere sightseeing and visit of cultural, religious and traditional places will add little to fun and thrill. - Hotels is the stay should be advised to ensure provision of basis necessities such as sleepers for washrooms, tooth paste. Hotels should also provide at least one or two Halal dishes to the people from Muslim countries.

The French Riviera - Monaco-Monte Carlo, Cannes, Nice, Antibes Tour

The French Riviera - Monaco-Monte Carlo, Cannes, Nice, Antibes

Did the Euroadventures trip to the French Riviera for Carnival at the end of February. What a great trip! Had the owner of the company, Shaun, as our trip leader and he was fantastic. Showed us a ton of great sights in Monaco, Antibes, Nice and Cannes and recommendations for food and nightlife too. The Carnival parties were super fun as the streets were packed with the parade and floats. Really worth it going up in the carousel to get great views over the parade. Even though it was February, the weather was great and we even managed a few hours on the beach in Cannes (water was too chilly to swim though). We had an amazing all you can eat mussels dinner in Nice (local specialty being seafood of course), and all the food in general was fantastic. Overall the French Riviera is like a dream destination. So much to see and do in a small connected area with the cities and seaside towns. I really felt like we got to know the destination well even though the trip is just a 3 night weekend and that's thanks to everything Euroadventures showed us and the great itinerary!

Hiking in the Dolomites Tour

Hiking in the Dolomites

Great value for money. Good tour guide. Excellent travel company. Some days the hiking was a bit light. Would have given it 5 stars if the hiking was every day. Also tourradar/intrepid could also consider providing a higher cost tour where we stay at different refuges every day. This will reduce the transportation constraints and time and increase the Dolomites amazing experience.

It was fun but it could have been organized a little better. Some of the hotels could have been chosen better and more central to the town centers. John and Tony were wonderful tour guides and shared lots of historical knowledge regarding the sites visited.

Hiking in the Dolomites Tour

A simply fantastic experience from so many perspectives. Andy was a brilliant guide… both in terms of hiking and integrating the group. The mountains were extraordinary. What an awesome landscape… and the hiking difficulties were challenging at times but not undoable. Came away with a great sense of achievement. Hoyle very comfortable. Good, solid Tyrolian food. Well organised and lovely company. Totally recommended.

Where to begin?! When I discovered EpikDrives, I knew this would be the perfect surprise trip for my husband. Initially the packages and trip seemed “to good to be true” but Stephan was quick to respond to my 1,000 questions. We didn’t find many reviews which made me nervous but booked regardless and ARE WE GLAD WE DID! This turned out to be one of the best trips we have ever taken. Planning of the trip and booking was seamless. Stephan was so helpful and prompt with responses throughout the entire process from start to finish. Once we arrived in Switzerland, Stephan was waiting at the hotel with our supercar on arrival. We were impressed with the ease of everything! We would get into the car each morning and essentially hit “go” on the GPS. Easy GPS guidance to follow along with designated stops for sightseeing, coffee if needed, and re-fueling. We also enjoyed the binder that accompanied with printed out information of the itinerary for each day and description of the different sites or mountain passes. I would certainly give EpikDrives and Stephan a 10+ if I could and we will definitely be taking another trip with them in the near future. Thank you, Stephan, for such an incredible experience!

Self-Guided Hiking: Alpe Adria Trail - 8 Days

I travelled with my family to Slovenia with this company. We wanted a holiday in nature, with the possibility to do several outdoor activities. Everything was well arranged, the airport transfers and the guide. The accommodation was a lovely guesthouse just in front of the river, we Had a large clean Room with wooden furniture. One mention for the customers service, and for how the guide took care about our specific needs during the outdoor activities which Are really enjoyable and not too challenging. Highly recommend for an Active Holidays In Slovenia!

Slovenia Hiking: Alpe Adria Trail 5days- self guided Tour

Slovenia Hiking: Alpe Adria Trail 5days- self guided

Everything is organised quite well, you get a hotel booked in each town and they transfer your luggage after you check out from each of them. You also get a dinner and a breakfast in each of the hotels but one(the one in Trenta - they have no restaurant). There was a tiny mix up with one of the hotels - where the name of the hotel we were informed about was different from what the travel voucher said, but Marco(who we communicate with via tourradar) helped us to find the correct one, even though our contact specified in the travel vouched was not picking up his phone. Perhaps because it was quite late - around 8pm, because in the mornings there was no issues reaching him. Also, if you don't feel like walking the whole distance you can ask them to transfer you half way or something like that, which we did on the 3rd day cause we were quite tired. But be sure to think about this in advance, before you take the trip. Overall - would recommend: hotels are good, nature is beautiful, the trails are not too difficult if you have some hiking experience. Just be sure to pack enough water because there is absolutely no water fountains along the trails, which we found weird, but I suppose you can drink directly from Soča river as it seemed super clean.

How to plan a road trip in the Bavarian Alps

A week-long drive through the mountains of southern Germany takes in a range of architectural wonders.

A view of the Schloss Neuschwanstein castle. The castle is white in colour, and is built on stilts to tower over the forest below.

While not as high or visually dramatic as some other sections of the European range, the Bavarian Alps come with plenty of charm. Cowbells resound across high pastures, wooden huts serve cold beer and turquoise lakes shimmer in the countryside below. There’s also, of course, a famous castle. Schloss Neuschwanstein welcomes huge numbers of visitors every year and fronts many a guidebook — and it has notably just undergone the largest restoration project in its 150-year history. Travelling from west to east, this road trip starts at the landmark before making stops at other impressive structures, notable buildings and feats of engineering across the region.

1. Schloss Neuschwanstein

Kick things off at one of Germany’s most recognisable locations, the enchanting castle said to have inspired those featured in Disney’s Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. The most extensive makeover to date, including meticulous work on paintings, furniture and a one-tonne chandelier, began in 2017 and is due to be completed this summer. Book onto a guided tour to see the results for yourself, then stroll to nearby Marienbrücke bridge for a view back at the turreted marvel.

2.   The Passion Play Theatre

For a scenic mountain route, drive via Plansee in Austria to reach Oberammergau. The village is adorned with murals known as Lüftlmalerei, including depictions of Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood. But there’s another, different story this place wants to tell. Locals have been putting on a once-a-decade Passion Play, telling the story of the Crucifixion, for almost four centuries — a pledge once made to fend off the plague. The next performance is scheduled for 2030, but you can join a daily tour of the specially built theatre.

3.   Zugspitze Cable Car

Drive south to the island-dotted lake of Eibsee and the Zugspitze cable car. Its construction, which began in 2015 and took two years, was a veritable engineering feat: carrying up to 120 people each, its glass cabins glide smoothly to the 2,962m summit of Germany’s highest mountain in a matter of minutes. Buy a return ticket, allowing plenty of time to take in the panorama: on a clear day, you can see peaks as far as Austria, Italy and Switzerland.

4.   Tegernseer Hütte

Next, head east and get ready for a hike to the Tegernseer Hütte, a mountain hut perched between the peaks of Roßstein and Buchstein. First constructed in 1903, it was rebuilt in 1965 after a lightning strike. The quickest path takes two hours or less from the car park just west of Bayerwald, zig-zagging through forests, meadows and rougher terrain at the end. Alternatively, there’s a gentler three-hour option. Set off early to reach the terrace for lunch or book well in advance for an overnight and time without the crowds.

5.   Wendelstein Cog Railway

Continue along the shores of the Tegernsee and through Bayrischzell until you reach the village of Brannenburg. From here, hop onto one of the yellow carriages that shuttle visitors up and down the Wendelstein mountain. Built between 1910 and 1912, this high-Alpine rack railway was the first of its kind in Germany. Since modernised, it takes you over bridges, through tunnels, under galleries and around rock faces in around 25 minutes.

6.   Eagle’s Nest

Follow the road via Reit im Winkl to the Berchtesgadener Land, where the Kehlsteinhaus (nicknamed the Eagle’s Nest) was built atop a rocky outcrop as a retreat for Nazi leadership in the 1930s. Leave your car in Obersalzberg and take a designated bus up Germany’s highest road; a brass-lined lift inside the hillside will then take you to the site, now maintained as a restaurant. There are guided tours of the area to learn about its turbulent past, then end the trip exploring the wider Berchtesgaden National Park.

Testimonials

What really sets you guys apart—and we have been on a few other guided hiking tours—was that we had a feeling that we were a part of Alpenwild rather than just a hike. Both of our guides conveyed the organizational commitment that Alpenwild has towards its guests. - T. H. - California

The Most Popular Trek in Europe—Perfected

The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is the classic hike, circling Western Europe’s highest peak. It combines inspiring mountain scenery with cultural vibrancy in the alpine regions of France, Switzerland, and Italy, and their distinct yet intertwined cultures. No wonder it's the most popular trek in Europe.

No Shortage of Stunning Alpine Scenery on the TMB

It’s a challenging route, to be sure, but you’ll hike with just a light daypack, and in the company of an expert Alpine hiking guide. On our route we skirt some of the most impressive glaciers in the Alps; we wind our way through deep-cut canyons, and pass characterful alpine villages. Every day offers spectacular scenery and extraordinary mountain landscapes.

Accommodations Others Only Dream of. Fully Supported

What sets this itinerary apart from any other is our choice of superb accommodations. We avoid the overcrowded huts, gites, and auberges and stay in 3- and 4-star hotels (with one 2-star hotel) with private ensuite bathrooms. Most have a pool and spa facility that you'll be able to enjoy. Additionally, our trip is fully supported by daily luggage transfers, so you will have clean clothes waiting for you at each hotel!

As with every Alpenwild trip, we seek out exceptional cuisine, which in this region means homey Savoyard dishes—potatoes draped in melted mountains of cheese, aromatic sausages, and crusty breads. We’ve searched out and uncovered some of the finest accommodations along the route—including hand-picked hotels and mountain inns, not offered by other operators. Many of the daily details of our route are exclusive to the Alpenwild experience.

Premier Alpine Resorts and Charming Hamlets

Our route includes a 2-night stay within the medieval town of Courmayeur, Italy. In Chamonix we stay in a 4-star in the pedestrian heart of this favorite mountain resort. And in the quaint villages in Alpenwild’s home base of Switzerland you’re sure to have an experience like none other.

Best time to travel: June for the “White Nights” Best gateway city: Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia Moscow and St. Petersburg Slide Show

Experience the art treasures of Moscow and St. Petersburg with guide, Amy Osaki. Begin in Moscow, continental Europe’s largest city, the seat of the government of Russia, and now home to over twenty billionaires! View iconic sites such as the Kremlin (which began as a fortress in the eleventh century), Red Square, and the sixteenth century St. Basil’s Cathedral. Then explore the art masterpieces at the Tretyakov Gallery, the National Museum of Russian Fine Art encompassing works from the eleventh to the twentieth century. Visit the Armory at the Kremlin filled with Imperial treasures including Faberge eggs once exchanged by the tsar and tsarina at Easter. Conclude your Moscow experience at the quiet seventeenth century Novodevichy Convent, one of many World Heritage sites included in the trip.

After a short flight, continue the trip with five days in St. Petersburg where you’ll be immersed in the opulence of Imperial Russia. Established by Tsar Peter I in 1703, St. Petersburg (known as Petrograd and Leningrad for most of the twentieth century) was the capital of the Russian empire for over two hundred years until the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Hermitage—said to be the largest art museum in the world with a collection of over three million objects housed in four main buildings—rivals the Louvre in Paris for both the quantity and quality of its treasures. Founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great, and open to the pubic for over two hundred years the museum is so vast that we’ll spread our visit out over several days and organize it by different themes. Also on the schedule is a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress—the original citadel above the river founded in 1703—as well as some of the Imperial palaces in and around St. Petersburg such as Peterhof, a World Heritage Site. Peter I hired French architects to work on his many palaces, including Jean Baptiste Le Blond who worked with Andre Le Notre at Versailles. Consider enhancing your Russian experience by purchasing tickets to a performance—perhaps a ballet at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre (also known as the Kirov).

Day 1 Overnight in Moscow Arrive in Moscow and transfer to your centrally-located hotel, your base for the next two nights. Enjoy an afternoon and early evening walk through Red Square (Krasnaya Ploshchad) past St. Basil’s Cathedral, and GUM department store all of which are back-dropped by the walls of the Kremlin fortress. Remember that we are here during the fabled “White Nights” when the summer days linger with light-filled evenings.

Day 2 Overnight in Moscow Within the walls of the Kremlin fortress, visit the Armoury Museum, one of Moscow’s oldest museums established at the start of the nineteenth century. The Kremlin Armoury was the royal arsenal; it produced and stored the weapons, jewelry and other regalia of the tsars. The museum’s collection encompasses four thousand items of applied art from Russia and elsewhere dating from the early fourth century to the twentieth century. Later in the day, visit the collection of masterpieces of the renowned Tretyakov Gallery. The Tretyakov collections were begun by the philanthropist Tretyakov brothers in the early nineteenth century. The gallery is recognized by many as a key repository of Russian art spanning the nation’s artistic tradition from early Orthodox icons to art nouveau, impressionist, and avant-garde works.

Day 3 Overnight in St Petersburg Enjoy a morning visit to the sixteenth century Novodevichy Convent named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004. The convent’s name is sometimes translated as “New Maidens’ Monastery” to differentiate is from the convent within the walls of the Moscow Kremlin. Surrounded by white crenellated walls, this complex of churches has remained essentially intact since the seventeenth century. Here you’ll find the five-domed Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk with its spectacular iconostasis and the tall, red and white Gate Church of the Transfiguration which is often cited as a fine example of “Moscow Baroque” architecture. The neighboring Novodevichy Cemetery is the final resting place of the likes of Anton Chekhov, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, and Boris Yeltsin. This afternoon fly to St. Petersburg, Russia’s second largest city situated on the banks of the Neva River where it empties into the Gulf of Finland.

Day 4 Overnight in St Petersburg Start of your exploration of St. Petersburg with a visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress, the original citadel of St. Petersburg. The fortress was built to the designs of the Swiss Italian architect Domenico Trezzini in the early eighteenth century. Trezzini’s Peter and Paul Cathedral dominates the fortress grounds and its iconic golden spire punctuates into the Baltic sky. Later visit the Yusupov Palace on the Moika, acclaimed as an “encyclopedia of St. Petersburg aristocratic interior design.” The palace was the home of the Yusupov family from 1830 and 1917 and was the place where Grigori Rasputin, a spiritual mentor to Tsar Nicholas II and the Royal Family in the early 20th century, was assassinated. A visit to the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood built between 1883 and 1907 rounds out the day. The church was built in “Russian Revivalist” architectural style by Tsar Alexander III in commemoration of his father, Alexander II. The church occupies a conspicuous location on St. Petersburg’s Griboedov Canal and contains 7,500 square meters of mosaics; the interior walls and ceilings are completely covered by mosaics.

Day 5 Overnight in St Petersburg Seeing St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum in a day would be like trying to see the Smithsonian in a day! Rather than a forced march through the galleries at a rapid pace, we will slow down and savor the masterpieces. Remember, there are nearly seven miles worth of exhibitions! Today we focus on “Imperial Russia,” touring the rooms decorated for members of the Russian Imperial Family and viewing the art they commissioned and collected. This is the art that influenced the style of the grand palaces of the era. View the Grand Suite of rooms, Peter I’s collection of gold, and the jewelers art owned by the Russian Imperial Family (including Fabergé eggs, gold and diamonds). Here, too, are the rooms of Catherine II and her son Paul I with their fifteenth to eighteenth century French paintings and sculpture (Poussin, Watteau, Fragonard, Chardin, and Houdon).

Day 6 Overnight in St Petersburg Return for a second dose of the Hermitage! Today is dedicated to the famous European masterpieces exhibited at the Hermitage. Feast your eyes on memorable works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Velazquez, and El Greco. At the Hermitage, you can revel in Rembrandt; there are twenty of his works in the museum’s collection. After lunch, enjoy the eighteenth to twentieth century masterpieces of Monet, van Gogh, Gauguin, Rodin, Picasso, Matisse and Kandinsky. Digest the art and reflect on this unique collection of human creations. Consider an evening performance, possibly at the Mariinsky Theatre.

Day 7 Overnight in St Petersburg Journey by hydrofoil across the Gulf of Finland to experience Peter I’s palace at Peterhof, a series of palaces and gardens that evoke comparisons with Versailles which Peter visited in 1715. Begun in 1714 with the construction of the Monplaisir palace and expanded by later Imperial generations who added Rococo and Neo-classical elements, Peterhof is now a World Heritage Site. The creative mastery of architects, engineers, artists and craftsmen from throughout Europe is on display here and all is choreographed to celebrate water in homage to Peter, the maritime emperor.

Day 8 Overnight in St Petersburg Go behind the scenes with an excursion to the Hermitage Museum’s Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Storage Center on the right back of the Neva River north of Kamenny Island. This vast treasure house is only accessible by private tour. Later, travel to Vasilvesky Island across the river from the Hermitage to visit Menishkov Palace completed in 1721 and now the oldest stone building in St. Petersburg. Enjoy a farewell dinner this evening.

  • JeffKuptchuck 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles This is definitely a unique experience After looking at all of the big cathedrals in Moscow and being rather overwhelmed this was a much more intimate and personal experience. It was great to be able to be there by ourselves and the monk that showed us around and Anton both were obviously very passionate about the monastery so you were able to understand much better what the various churches and icons meant to them The view from the bell tower was awesome even if the climb up took some faith! Dinner was very good except for my wife who doesn't like fish and that is all they eat at the monastery besides vegetables, but still very unique dinner. Read more Written February 9, 2020

  • TanechkaVas 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The whole day tour to Zvenigorod, the country side of Moscow, with Anton. We organized that tour from Australia well ahead of time, planning to visit Zvenigorod with big group of extended family and friends with teens as part of our New Year trip to Moscow. The communication with Anton, our guide, was excellent during the time since booking till the excursion day. The actual day was organized very good, taken into account mixed group of adults, born in USSR and kids, born in Australia. Anton organized our activities to be suitable for all of us. As adults, we were enjoyed country side during winter and Monastery's quietness and ability to jump to the cold "holy" water at one of the oldest Monasteries of Russia - Savva Storoghevskiy Man Monastery. That was the most amazing and nearly magical experience! Kids were enjoyed of snow and treats Anton provide for us, including buisquits and Sbiten'. We also visited very interesting Museum of Russian desserts and learn a lot about ancient russian sweets; have a look on our past in the Museum of USSR and bought some yammie things to enjoy later. In general we all agree that our tour to Zvenigorod with Anton was enjoyable and educational; well organized and unforgettable. We wish we would have more time there! We would recommend such trip to everyone wishing to see Russia's country side. Read more Written January 17, 2020
