Anheuser-Busch announces $20 million investment in Columbus brewery

by Sarah Wynn

This Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, photo shows cans of Bud Light in Washington. Starting next month, packages of Bud Light will have prominent labels showing the beer’s ingredients and calories as well as the amount of fat, carbohydrates and protein in a serving. Bud Light is likely the first of many to make the move. The labels aren’t legally required, but major beer makers agreed in 2016 to voluntarily disclose nutrition facts on their products by 2020. COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Anheuser-Busch announced Thursday a $20 million investment at its Columbus brewery.

The investment is part of the brewer's announcement made earlier this year to invest $1 billion over two years in the company's facilities.

“We’re proud to be a dedicated member of this community since 1968, and this investment epitomizes our deep commitment to Columbus and to the broader beer industry,” said Kyle Topping, General Manager, Anheuser-Busch Columbus brewery. “Our team of nearly 600 people is excited to continue expanding our ability and capacity to brew some of America’s most recognizable and beloved brands for consumers across the country.”

The investment will increase brewing and packaging capacity and capabilities. An existing bottle line will be modified to also accommodate can packaging to package beer in both 12 oz alumni cans and 12 oz sleek cans. In addition to the company's non-alcoholic brews, the facility will also produce more of its innovations outside of beer.

“The State of Ohio is appreciative of Anheuser-Busch for their longstanding partnership and presence in our state,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “Thank you to Anheuser-Busch for your commitment and investment in our community that will continue to positively impact the broader economy for years to come.”

Also, the upgrades will help the brewery to meet consumer demand while reducing its overall environmental impact.

“Our planned $1 billion investment in our facilities over the next two years is about supporting our local communities by creating and sustaining jobs as our nation recovers and looks forward to growth and prosperity,” said Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch. “The Columbus brewery plays an important role in enabling our innovations and producing the highest-quality products for our consumers to enjoy. This investment in Columbus and the surrounding community is one way that we are helping to accelerate our overall recovery.”

Construction to upgrade the Columbus brewery is currently underway and is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

No public tours planned for Anheuser-Busch brewery in Columbus

Anheuser-Busch says it doesn't have any immediate plans to open its Columbus brewery for public tours. The mega-brewer recently decided to offer regular tours at its Houston facility and offered a new "pop-up brewery tour" last month at its Cartersville, Ga., location.

"At this point, we don’t have any plans to open in Columbus," spokeswoman Beth Kerley said when asked by the Akron Beacon Journal.

Of course, never say never.

"But the beer industry and consumer taste and consumer interest are something that we're on top of so if there are some reasons to open there, we certainly would be open to consider it," she added.

The Houston facility is providing three different kinds of tours , including a behind-the-scenes tour and beer school. It's the first time the brewery has been open to the public in nearly 20 years, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Anheuser-Busch used to offer public tours at its Columbus brewery, which opened in 1968 and is located near the Interstate 71-Interstate 270 interchange. But the last one was held in 1999, Kerley said.

The Columbus facility produces about 10 million barrels a year and supplies all of Ohio and surrounding states with Budweiser, Bud Light and other brands.

On the way up to the White Mountains I dropped in here because it's right over the Mass state line in New Hampshire. The Anheuser-Busch Brewery was opened here in the 70s. I have been here before when I was younger but it's a nice few hours of going on the tour of the factory and at the end of the tour you end up in a large tasting room and the bar has many choices of their beer to try. On the other end of the property is where the Clydesdales are housed plus a large area to exercise them. It isn't always open so I guess you have to get lucky. The Clydesdales are huge!

the tour guide was fantastic . She knows her job and it was a pleasure meeting her . They have future activities scheduled that we are interested in and we will be back !

These tours are back on after they took some time off. We had Monique for a tour guide and she did not disappoint. She has 37 years of experience and a wealth of knowledge about the plant operations. She is friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable. If you book a tour you will not be disappointed. Fascinating plant operations if your into mass-production engineering.

Do not waste your time driving here for the tour. The tours are permanently closed and no longer being offered. The horses are no longer at this location either. Nothing on google has been updated to state this. The website redirects you to the Missouri location.

I HIGHLY recommend the Beermaster tour! It is worth the money! It was far more than I had expected, to be honest! If you take this tour, be sure to read all of the information beforehand about how to dress or else you won't be able to go in. We were equipped with safety vests, safety glasses, a ball cap, ear plugs & an ear piece for some of the areas where it was loud (so that we could hear our tour guide). Our tour guide was Ally & she was so friendly & knowledgeable! My boyfriend & I had booked this tour as part of our anniversary celebration trip & one of the things that we are trying to do is visit as many breweries in the region as we can. So far, this one has been the BEST experience. Our group was a total of 6 people & I liked that it wasn't a massive group. There was so much to see & learn! We even got to sample Bud Light fresh out of the vat before it went through its last filtration. IT WAS SO CRISP! At the end we got to spend some time in a lounge (where the tour started) & sample a couple of brews! I truly felt like I was a VIP getting to experience so much more of the tour than the free tours they offer. We were so close to everything! Seriously, the best experience yet. I want to go back!

There is no better way to experience the Budweiser world from "seed to sip". They have a variety of tours you can't miss. Good for all ages, the complimentary tours @ the perfect price point, takes you behind the scenes of the brewing process & includes a complimentary beer. The Clydesdales experience and beermaster tours are charged between $10-$25. When we were done, we realized we had spent over 4hrs or so, that's how much we enjoyed it. I highly recommend visiting. The property is impeccable, so well maintained but the Clydesdales take the crown. You can get up close these gentle giants at their well kept stables, super clean...they are their priced possessions after all. We always make it a point to come see the Clydesdales when ever we are in the area and have the opportunity to do so. Oh! One more thing, they have a special program if you are turning 21...now ain't that a perfect celebration!ya

I took the beermaster tour. I went on a Wednesday morning, I and my girlfriend were the only 2 people in the tour. There was a Groupon available for this tour. The tour was 2 hour long. You meet your guide in the store. Your first stop is their lounge. You will be given a beer. Different ingredients of beer will be shown to you. Hop was the ingredient I was not aware of. It comes from a plant, and gives the beer hoppy flavor. Hop has a nice flavor to it. Safety instruction and gears will be handed over to you here. From there, you visit the control room. This is the place where the whole beer making is controlled from multiple computers. Then you will start going through the different stages of beer making. First the mixing stage, where yeast and other ingredients are mixed, then fermentation, then the carbonization and finally the tanks before packing. All these things are done in different areas and all the tanks are huge. On the last tank before bottling, you will be given a chance to enjoy fresh beer right before bottling. I felt the fresh beer tasted slightly different from the bottled beer. From there you will be taken to the bottling area, where you can see how the beer is getting bottled and packaged. From here you return to the lounge. The amount of time left for 2 hours (for me it was 20 minutes), you can enjoy any beer available. At the time of leaving You will be given a budweiser cap and a glass. You can pick some coaster and bottle caps if you like. You will learn the history of anheuser busch and the process involved in making beer. You can go and see the budweiser clydesdale for free after that. Those are huge draft horses. Those horses are majestic. definitely go and see them. If you are hungry there is a food court. Food prices are reasonable. You can buy t shirts or other memorabilia from the store. Overall it is a worthwhile place to visit.

A look inside the Budweiser plant

Editor's note: This story and video from the Dispatch archives was originally published on May 21, 2015.

With summer on the way, workers at the Budweiser plant have increased production to meet the seasonal demand.

“Right now, we are brewing at almost full capacity,” said Jackie Hamel, general manager of the Columbus brewery. “We’ll make up to 900,000 barrels of beer every month from May until September.”

The plant makes 10 million barrels of beer a year.

That works out to be about the equivalent of 20 million kegs, said Tyler Hunter, the plant’s brewmaster.

The bulk of the production is Budweiser and Bud Light, but the brewery produces 20 different Anheuser-Busch brands. Some of the others include Michelob, Natural Light, Landshark and Busch. The beer is then distributed throughout Ohio and Michigan and parts of Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia.

“We have about 250 loads of beer that go out of here every day,” Hamel said.

The brewery opened in 1968, but it has grown since then to produce three times as much beer.

At any time of day, drivers heading south on I-71 can expect to see steam from the brewhouse billowing in front of the Budweiser sign. It takes 30 days to make Budweiser and the workers brew beer around the clock.

“There are 500 employees that go into the production,” Hamel said.

Sampling the product is one of the duties.

“The most important quality check that we do is we taste every step of the brewing process,” Hunter said.

A tasting panel convenes daily to sample not only the finished product but also beer in the stages of primary fermentation and lagering. They even test the water that rinses the bottles.

“You find deviations in your process,” Hunter said. “The art of brewing is we’re always constantly dealing with incoming raw materials.”

This is still his favorite part of the job.

“You get to sit down and say, ‘Here’s all the hard work we have done,' ” Hunter said. “And make sure that it’s perfect.”

Beer Tour: Visit the Anheuser-Busch Brewery (with the kids)

Remember how I said that St. Louis is known for three things? Beer was one of those three–baseball and  toasted ravioli  being the other two. So let’s talk a little beer.

anheuser busch tour

(NOTE: Anheuser-Busch changed their tours around this month. The free tour is now shorter and takes a smaller group (max. 60). I’m told they no longer visit the bottling facility. They added a longer tour for $10 (kids are $3) that lets you sample more beer and offers a trinket to the kids. I’ll add a fresh post after we get down there and investigate for ourselves!)

St. Louis and the Anheuser-Busch brewery are forever linked, and the founding family of AB has done tons of cool things for moms. You know, beside making us margarita flavored beer.

Without Gussie Busch we may not have awesome things like Busch Stadium (he built the first one for his  Cardinals) or Grant’s Farm . Yep, it was Gussie that opened up the family estate to tourists and established the long held tradition of feeding your children to tiny goats.

We can also thank Gussie for St. Louis’ number one animal mascot–the Budweiser Clydesdales. He gave his dad a hitch of six beer pulling Clydesdales to celebrate the end of prohibition back in 1933.

Now back to the beer. The Anheuser-Busch brewery in St. Louis is open for tours. And yes, it’s is a family-friendly tour. It’s also totally free, so it’s fun touristy thing to do if you run out of ideas and want to do something that involves local history, walking and free beer.

beer tour st. louis

The tour starts in the main lobby where the company has tons of memorabilia set out. Yes, most of this is beer related, but the kids will get a kick out the old truck (which they can get into), some of the racing history and information on the Clydesdales. While you’re waiting, mom and dad can snag a sample of whatever is on tap or check out the gift shop for a Clydesdale toy.

The tour takes about an hour and involves a lot of walking. You can take a stroller, but it’s a bit of a pain due to the escalators and steps. However, the brewery is very friendly and handicap accessible, so a tour guide will give you hand and either show you to a secret elevator or hold the stroller for you.

clydesdale st louis

The tour’s first stop is the Clydesdale stables, one of the historic buildings on the company campus. Back in the day, the Busch family lived right next to their factory and the stable is all that remains of their living quarters. (Remember, they were brewing beer before cars, so it made sense to live next door to your business!) The stable is home to the St. Louis hitch, so there’s always a couple horses around to visit.

Next you’ll see the giant vats where the beer ages then over to another building where the guides will talk about how beer is made and show you more behind the scenes factory stuff. The last stop is the bottling plant were you can see the beer being packaged. Finally, they’ll load you up on a tram and give you a ride back up to the hospitality room.

beer tour st louis

The hospitality room serves up pretzels and two samples of beer for the adults. Kids and non-drinkers can help themselves to free soda.

And everyone is happy.

The Tour Center is open seven day a week . It’s located at the corner of 12th and Lynch Street in Soulard. Take the Arsenal exit off Hwy 55 when you visit. ( Gus’s Pretzel’s is also on Arsenal , just across the highway from the brewery. You might want to work that into your visit too!)
