An Insight into Arunachal Pradesh Tourism

Arunachal Pradesh is such a charmer. Adorned with beautiful and unspoilt rivers, lakes, hills and valleys along with opulent wildlife and culture, this Northeastern state is indeed a dream travel destination in India. Arunachal Pradesh shares its southern boundary with Assam, and on its west is Bhutan, whereas, China makes the north and northeast border for the state, and the pretty little Myanmar snuggles the east. It covers a spectacular area of 83,743 sq km that is dotted with numerous rivers, lakes, forests, hill ranges, valleys, grasslands, and sweet little settlements.

One of the major tourism attractions in Arunachal Pradesh is the opportunity for adventure sports. This unperturbed and in a way raw state has powerful rivers like Lohit, Siang and Subansiri that offer incredible river rafting and kayaking experience. On the other hand, the hidden trails and unmatched places challenge trekkers to discover for themselves some surreal trekking destinations. Meanwhile, trails from Bhalukpong to Tawang via Dirang and Bomdila are perfect for motor biking adventures in Arunachal Pradesh.

The state also boasts of a rich wildlife that includes rare species like White Winged Wood Duck. Namdapha, Dibang, Sessa and Pakhui are amongst the most popular wildlife reserves in Arunachal Pradesh that are home to a wide variety of animals, birds, amphibians and reptiles along with varied species of plants and trees. Arunachal is also famous for its orange and apple orchards in Aalo and Bomdila. The state also flaunts its rich orchid plantations as well which are available in more than 1000 varieties. What enriches Arunachal the most is its varied tribes and their distinct culture and traditions. With so many tribes inhabiting the state, a large number of festivals can be witnessed throughout the year.

Along with the famed Hornbill Festival, there are celebrated a plethora of feasts and festivals like Boori Boot, Losar, Solung and Dree by the tribes like Monpa, Adi, Apatani and Mishmi that add to the cultural diversity making the state a much more interesting place to visit. Different tribes in Arunachal Pradesh are skilled in assorted handicraft and handloom arts and cach tribe such as Wangcho indulge in either cane furniture and articles making, jewellery/grass jewellery creation and wood carving. Therefore, when visiting Arunachal Pradesh, shopping for handicraft items is a must thing to do.

Another thing that shall catch the attention of tourists in the state is its cuisine. Unique and sometimes even bizarre with dried squirrel and mouse, Arunachal can be an interesting place to experiment with your appetite. Arunachal is also a treasure trove of history. The Bumla Pass near Tawang holds immense significance for being the high mountain pass from where His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama entered India from Tibet. The Ita Fort in Itanagar also has a lot to tell about the rich history of the state and so does the exotic Dirang Dzong. Arunachal Pradesh is also home to the largest monastery in India which is situated in the ever so serene Tawang. Apart from these, Jaswantgarh and Bhismaknagar Fort are of major importance to the rich history of the state.

Arunachal Pradesh is Reaping the Benefits of Sustainable Tourism Practices: Nakap Nalo

In an interview on the sidelines of green tourism india conclave, shillong, nakap nalo, minister for tourism, arunachal pradesh, talks about the state’s responsible tourism practices and recent achievements.

arunachal tourism department

What are the key factors that have contributed to the success of Arunachal Tourism?

The support and leadership of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mr. Pema Khandu have been instrumental in our progress. Their vision and commitment have helped improve connectivity, accommodations, and infrastructure in the state. Today, Arunachal Pradesh stands proudly as one of the finest destinations in the country, boasting improved road and air connectivity, as well as a generous selection of accommodations, including delightful homestays, scattered across the state’s important tourist locations. We should all take pride in our collective efforts to address the crucial infrastructure and human resource needs within the tourism sector over the past five years. Moving forward, we remain committed to our sincere endeavours in further developing this vital industry.

arunachal tourism department

The awards and recognition received by Arunachal Tourism in recent years are quite impressive. Can you tell us more about these achievements and how they reflect your team’s hard work?

The awards, including the Lonely Planet Award for the “Best Emerging Tourist Destination in India” and Travel & Leisure magazine’s award for the “Best Emerging Green Destination of 2019”, among others, are a testament to the dedication of our team. They reflect our efforts to promote and develop tourism in the state. It’s a result of our relentless work in marketing and promoting Arunachal Tourism, as well as establishing new destinations on the tourist map.

Let’s delve into some of the major works done by the Department of Tourism over the past five years. Can you provide more details about your flagship schemes and projects, and the creation of new tourist circuits?

Festive offer

We’ve achieved significant milestones through schemes like Swadesh Darshan and projects like “Development of Parshuram Kund”, which aim to enhance both the tourist experience and the spiritual and heritage aspects of destinations. Additionally, we’ve opened new tourist circuits, satisfying long-standing demands and showcasing the cultural tapestry of our region.

To give you more details, we have completed Swadesh Darshan 1.0, the flagship scheme of the Government of India, at a total cost of Rs 146.49 Crores. We have commenced Swadesh Darshan 2.0 from this year. The project titled “Development of Parshuram Kund” under the PRASHAD scheme has commenced with a budget of Rs 37.87 Crores. Its aim is to enhance and rejuvenate the spiritual and heritage aspects of Parshuram Kund. It is nearing completion.

Meanwhile, in just a short span of time, Arunachal Tourism has emerged as the most followed social media tourism page among the Northeastern states on Facebook . This clearly showcases our successful endeavours in promoting Arunachal Pradesh as a sought-after tourist destination. We have also successfully established the brand Arunachal Tourism through our relentless marketing and promotional endeavours. Our strategies include advertising in print and electronic media, collaborating with influencers, organising roadshows, events, car, bike, and cycling rallies, as well as participating in and organising webinars, fairs and festivals.

We have also successfully established new destinations such as Anini, Walong, Dambuk, Namsai, Changlang, Longding, Khonsa, Pakke Kessang, and more. Noteworthy is the opening of two new tourist circuits, namely, Deomali – Hukanjuri – Khonsa and Kanubari – Longding.

The impact on entrepreneurship and skill development is also noteworthy. Can you share the initiatives you’ve undertaken to create entrepreneurs and skilled personnel in the tourism sector?

We’ve initiated programmes like the Chief Minister Paryatan Vikas Yojana (CMPVY) to provide financial assistance to over 800 beneficiaries in the tourism sector, including restaurants, homestays, and adventure tour operators. Additionally, we’ve been providing training to hospitality graduates and diploma holders as part of the Chief Minister Paryatan Sikhsha Yojana (CMPSY). We have had 80 beneficiaries so far. Over 250 young individuals had the privilege of undergoing training in the Chief Minister Skill Advanced Certificate Course at the esteemed National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS), located in Dirang. During their time at NIMAS, these enthusiastic participants were exposed to a wide range of exhilarating adventure sports. As a result of their training, a number of these talented individuals have successfully pursued careers as paragliding, rafting, and trekking guides.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has set the theme for this year as ‘Tourism and Green Investment.’ How do you plan to embrace sustainable and responsible practices in Arunachal Pradesh’s tourism sector, considering the ecological sensitivity of your region?

The theme ‘Tourism and Green Investment’ is extremely relevant for us, given our delicate ecosystem. We are committed to embracing sustainable practices by reducing our carbon footprint, promoting energy efficiency, and developing eco-friendly accommodations. It’s crucial that we protect our environment while supporting local businesses and preserving our cultural traditions. The only way we can truly develop our tourism is by embracing sustainable and responsible practises. It’s our only viable option.

How do you see investing in sustainable tourism benefiting not only the environment but also local communities and businesses? What steps will Arunachal Pradesh take to create a brighter future for all?

Investing in sustainable tourism is a win-win for everyone. It not only helps protect our environment but also benefits local communities and businesses by creating long-term opportunities. We will take action to ensure a brighter future by promoting eco-friendly practices and supporting local businesses, traditions, and our environment.

As a tribal society, we have been reaping the benefits of sustainable tourism practices for generations. It is crucial that we uphold our legacy by embracing innovative approaches that blend modern technology with our time-honoured traditions. We must strive to decrease our carbon footprint and advocate for energy efficiency by creating eco-friendly homestays, hotels, and resorts.

Can you share with us your thoughts on the role played by individuals within the tourism industry, such as tour operators, guides, homestay owners, and more, in bringing the state to this stage of development?

The individuals in our tourism sector have played a vital role in our state’s growth. They are the backbone of our tourism industry, and their dedication and hard work have been instrumental in getting us to where we are today. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the esteemed individuals who make up the backbone of the tourism sector in our state and express my heartfelt gratitude for the tremendous efforts they have made to bring us to the current stage of development.

Arunachal receives Best Offbeat Destination Award

arunachal tourism department

ITANAGAR, 20 Dec: In a proud moment for the state’s tourism department, Arunachal Pradesh has been named Best Offbeat Destination in India at the Outlook Traveller Awards, 2023.

Additional resident commissioner Sanjeev Dubey and resident tourism officer Adong Moyong, on behalf of Arunachal Tourism, received the award at a glittering function at a city hotel in New Delhi recently.

“This recognition is another pat at the back of all stakeholders–department of tourism, tour operators, hotel operators, and the public of the state to re-dedicate themselves to preserving their nature and culture. This will ensure sustainability of the tourism sector along with upliftment of the public and the society,” deputy tourism director Bengia Manna Sonam said in a release.

Itanagar, Jul 27 (PTI) The Centre has approved two new tourist circuits for Arunachal Pradesh to boost tourism in the northeastern state, officials said here on Wednesday.

The new tourist circuits are Dibrugarh – Deomali – Hukanjuri – Khonsa in Tirap district and Dibrugarh – Kanubari – Longding in Longding district of the state, they said.

“The proposal of Arunachal Pradesh government relating to opening of new tourist routes has been examined by the central government. It has, accordingly, been decided with the approval of the competent authority in the Ministry of Home Affairs to open the two new tourist routs in Arunachal Pradesh for tourism purpose,” a circular from the union home ministry stated.

The MHA also urged the Arunachal Pradesh government to augment the capacity of district administration including police of Tirap and Longding districts to cater to the security of the area for creating an environment conducive to promoting tourism, the officials said.

“The activities of tourists to be adequately monitored by the concerned agencies,” the order further stated.

A post by the Arunachal Pradesh tourism department welcomed the opening of the new tourist routes. “Now hitherto unknown, unexplored destinations of both these districts will be open for tourists. This will in turn boost the local economy and people’s livelihood. Tourists will be able to experience the enchanting culture, dances and cuisine of the area,” it said. PTI UPL KK KK

arunachal tourism department

The Arunachal Chief Minister – Pema Khandu on Thursday launched the online eILP Portal, a web-based application for hassle-free issuance of Inner Line Permit (e-ILP) to tourists.

The event was attended by the IT Minister – Wangki Lowang, Tourism Minister – Nakap Nalo and other senior state government officers at the Civil Secretariat in Itanagar.

Glad to have launched online eILP Portal ( https://t.co/3Xz4xNXqU2 ), developed by Department of IT, @ArunachalTsm & @NICMeity , in presence of Hon IT Min Shri @wangki_lowang Ji & Hon Tourism Min Shri @nakapnaloffcial Ji. 1/3 pic.twitter.com/NQh8dYtFi3 — Pema Khandu པདྨ་མཁའ་འགྲོ་། (@PemaKhanduBJP) November 17, 2022 (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Developed by the IT Department of Arunachal Pradesh, in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the Arunachal CM cited its launch as “a great step to serve exclusively the tourists and smoothen their entry in the state, thereby facilitating the process of obtaining Inner Line Permit (ILP).”

“The ID card-based registrations with mobile OTP-based self verification and QR Code-based digitally issued ILP, which can be verified by police personnel at check gates using specially designed mobile based application, will facilitate faster movement of tourists,” added the CM.

The ILP entails permit to official travel documents issued by the Central government, in order to allow inward travel of an Indian citizen into a protected/restricted area for a limited period.

A British-era regulation designed to preserve ethnicity and culture of the northeastern tribals, ILP requires all Indian citizens to secure a special permit for entering the border states and regions of the North-East India.

The permit system is still in force in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
