What Can I Do in Aspendos?

This theater is one of the best places where you can feel the atmosphere of antiquity. Its wholesome architecture surrounded by the stage and seating rows are quite impressive, once you experience the acoustic features of this place.

The Aquaduct of Aspendos 

A visit to Aspendos is not complete without seeing pieces of the ancient aquaducts. The columns and vaults are partly standing behind the tiny hill nesting for the theater. This structure was a part of 25-kilometer long water channel that supplied the city of Aspendos with water. In other words, this engineering wonder brought life to Aspendos. 

The Acropolis of Aspendos

Just across the way, to the north of the theater, there are also the ruins of the stadium. When you walk the path between and, then climb the small hill, you reach the Acropolis of Aspendos. How to Get to Aspendos

Aspendos is in the village of Belkıs near a town called Serik. It is less than 50 kilometers from Antalya's city center, when you leave towards the east. So a it takes around 35-40 minutes by car . You can rent a car in Antalya easily.

From the  Antalya terminal , you can take a bus to Serik, first. And then, you will find minibuses departing for Belkıs to reach Aspendos.

The History of Aspendos

During the Roman Empire, it's believed that Aspendos was found by the survivors of the legendary city of Troy. Mopsos was the leader of the group coming to this region, which was called Pamphylia back then.  

The theater and the aquaduct were part of a legendary story about the king of Aspendos at the time. The story has it that two brothers wanted to be suitors of the princess. The king promised his beloved daughter to the person who could construct the most useful work for his city. In a harsh competition, one brother built the theater while the other built the aquaducts. Even though the water was more essential for the city, during opening of the theater project the king, sitting on the top row, clearly heard the architect whispering from the stage. He said "I deserve your daughter!"

The importance of Pamphylia increased as Roman dominance reached the shores of the Mediterranean. During the 2nd and 3rd centuries, Asia Minor became one of the most prosperous parts of the world. The splendor of Aspendos, from this golden age, is still visible at this stunning theater. 

The inscriptions on the structure tell us that it was designed and built by the architect, Zenon, between the years 138 and 164. Its spectator capacity is estimated between 12,000 to 15,000. One of the main factors that kept it in such a good shape is that it remained in use after the empire fell. In the Middle Ages, it was restored several times and used for different purposes like a royal residence or caravan saray.

Exploring the Ancient City of Aspendos: A Visitor's Guide

The ancient city of Aspendos, approximately 50 kilometers east of Antalya, is one of the big-hitter historic attractions for tourists visiting Turkey's Turquoise Coast region.

The site's theater – one of the Roman Empire's greatest remaining pieces of architecture – is the monument everyone is here to see.

If you can, try to come during the summer months, when this amazing building hosts the annual Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival. It's a wonderful chance to experience the theater used for its original purpose and hear its stunning acoustics.

History of Aspendos

The theater, tips and tours: how to make the most of your visit to aspendos.

In antiquity, Aspendos was probably the most important city in the state of Pamphylia. This glorious city came under Roman control in 190 BCE and reached its epoch during the Roman period, when trade and commerce flourished here.

According to tradition, the city was founded by the famous Greek diviner Mopsos around 1000 BCE, and archaeologists have found evidence of a settlement here from the Hittite era (800 BCE) onwards.

Similar to the nearby towns of Ancient Perge (the ruins of Perge are 34 kilometers west of Aspendos) and Ancient Side (the modern town of Side is 33 kilometers southeast of Aspendos), the city's eventual decline was due to the silting up of its harbor on the Eurymedon River and the centralization policies of the Byzantine Empire.

By the time of Seljuk domination over this part of Turkey, Aspendos' once great theater was only being used as a caravanserai.

Aspendos' theater is one of the largest ever built by the Romans in Asia Minor, and today it is one of the best preserved examples of Roman theater architecture.

Located in the lower town area of the site, the theater was built in the 2nd century CE, during Marcus Aurelius' reign, by an architect called Zenon.

The mammoth seating plan could fit an audience of between 15,000 and 20,000.

It has been thoroughly restored and is now used for music and drama festivals, including Turkey's famous annual Aspendos Opera Festival.

The semi-circular auditorium, divided into two sections by a broad passage halfway up, has 20 tiers of seating, with 10 staircases in the lower half and 19 tiers with 21 staircases in the upper part. Round the top runs a barrel-vaulted colonnade.

At either end of the stage are vaulted passages giving access to the orchestra.

The two-story stage wall was articulated by slender double columns with Ionic capitals on the lower order and Corinthian capitals on the upper one. The double column flanking the central entrance to the stage had a common broken pediment.

The stage itself had a wooden roof suspended by ropes, and the auditorium, too, was probably covered by an awning.

Although most tourists are here to simply see the theater, if you have some time up your sightseeing sleeve, there are plenty more things to do. Immediately above the lower town of Aspendos rises the 40-meter acropolis hill.

Beyond the remains of a small temple and the agora stands the nymphaeum (fountain shrine), once a monumental structure articulated by double columns but now represented only by a wall 32-meters long with 10 niches for statues.

Adjoining this on the north are the foundations of another building, probably the bouleuterion or council chamber.

Just to the north of Aspendos' acropolis hill are the remains of a magnificent ancient aqueduct and two linked water towers, which would have originally provided water for the city.

The aqueduct would have originally transported water for 19 kilometers and was built at some stage in the 3rd century CE. It's thought that the aqueduct was only in service for approximately 150 years, with earthquake damage being the probable theory as to why the aqueduct stopped working.

Most travelers visit Aspendos on a day trip from either Antalya or Side. The ruins of Ancient Perge are also nearby, so the two sites are usually included on the same trip in organized tours.

• Aspendos Tour: Both the Perge, Aspendos, Side and Waterfall Excursion and the Aspendos, Perge and Manavgat Waterfalls Day Tour are good options for visitors staying in Antalya to see the major tourist attractions in the Antalya region, even if they have limited time in the area. Both tours include guided visits to the ancient cities of Aspendos and Perge, lunch, and a stop at the waterfalls for photos. A side trip to the seaside town of Side, with its Roman ruins, is also included.

History of Aspendos

Aspendos is a city that dates back to the antiquity period when Antalya was known as Pamphylia and was a prosperous region.

At the time, Pamphylia was a stopping point for migrating people from Anatolia, and so the cities, including Aspendos, received much of their wealth through trade.

The fertile lands around the city also contributed to its successful agriculture. It is believed that the trade of olives, wine, grain, and salt, as well as Aspendian horse breeding, greatly impacted the city’s wealth.

Aspendos is divided into two areas; the Upper City and Lower City.

The Lower City received much of the river traffic and contained mostly trade, shipping, and commercial buildings, as well as residential areas. Very little remains of the Lower City.

The Upper City, also known as The Acropolis, is located on top of a hill, elevated 60 meters above. It extended for about 20 hectares and was surrounded by city walls, with three main gates.

This is the area that can be seen today.

Over the years, Aspendos was involved in many battles and was occupied by many tribes and settlers over the years, including Alexander the Great in 333 BC.

It was said that Alexander the Great once imposed a horse tax on the city, stating that it must give 4,000 horses per year.

The city reached its prime in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, which is when the monumental buildings such as the Basilica, the fountains, and aqueducts, as well as the iconic Roman theater.

It was believed that during this prime stage of Aspendos, 20,000 people lived and worked in the city.

When the Roman Empire fell, the city was largely damaged by an earthquake. It also saw frequent pillaging and marauding from pirates, as well as experiencing disease and famine.

By the 7th century, the city was practically abandoned.

How to Get to Aspendos

The best way to visit Aspendos is on a day tour from Antalya . There are several tour companies, but they all offer the same itinerary, which will take you to Aspendos as well as the Ancient City of Perge , to the historic town of Side to see the remains of the Apollon Temple, and to Manavgat Waterfall, which is located inside the city of Antalya.

Since Aspendos is small, remote, and only takes an hour or so to visit, this is the best way to see this attraction as it allows you to make the most of your day and visit all the main historic landmarks in the Antalya region.

However, if you only want to visit Aspendos, then here is how to get to Aspendos independently.

If you don’t want to visit by tour, your best option is to hire a car and drive yourself. You can hire a car either from Antalya, or from Side or Alanya if you plan on staying in these destinations instead.

From Antalya, it’s 46.7km from the city center of Antalya to Aspendos and takes approximately 45 minutes. The route is easy to follow since you drive along the D400 highway until you reach the turn-off signposted “Aspendos Yolu”, which comes just after the town of Serik.

Once you turn off the highway, follow the Aspendos Yolu road straight until you reach Aspendos. The road passes through a couple of small villages before you’ll see the theatre appear before you on the left.

The parking lot is just after the sharp right turn on the left side of the road, but it’s a huge parking lot so you won’t miss it.

If you are driving from Side or Alanya, you will also need to drive along the D400 highway until you come to the “Aspendos Yolu” exit.

By bus (don’t do it!)

You may hear people say you can get a bus to Aspendos, and following the advice we read online, this was how we decided to visit Aspendos. Based on our personal experience, we do not recommend this method.

The reason for this is the bus doesn’t take you to Aspendos , it drops you off on the side of the D400 highway. Not only is it quite dangerous to get off the bus and walk along a busy highway, but there are no taxis or buses that can take you the rest of the way – your only option is to walk.

The walk takes approximately one hour, and while it’s not a challenging walk since you simply follow the road if you’re visiting in the summer it will be uncomfortable. Much of this road is exposed to the sun and has little shade. Needless to say, it’s not fun.

Another reason not to take the bus is that the buses will not be able to take you back. Your only option to get the bus back to Antalya, Side or Alanya, is to flag one down from the side of the D400 highway , or walk to Serik which is 10km away . Buses do not stop on the highways, and we saw several buses pass us when we tried to flag one down.

Your only option to get back is to hitchhike. We were lucky that we were picked up by a friendly truck driver who didn’t speak any English but had a fondness for 80s disco. If it wasn’t for the kindness or generosity of the Turkish people, we would have been stuck there.

If this sounds like a fun adventure for you, then you can take the bus SA19 from Antalya to the town of Serik, and from there get a taxi to Aspendos . I highly advise that you negotiate with the taxi driver to come back and collect you, otherwise, you may need to hitchhike like we did. There were no taxis waiting in the car park at Aspendos, and there is no way to order and Uber either.

Things to See at The Ancient City of Aspendos

When visiting Aspendos, make sure you see the following landmarks…

Aspendos Theatre

The biggest attraction to Aspendos is the Aspendos Theatre, which is the best-preserved Roman theatre of the ancient world.

According to inscriptions above the Southern main entrance, the theater was built during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD).

It was designed by architect Zenon, who was local to the area. It was funded by two local brothers, Crispinus and Auspicatus Curtius, who dedicated it to the imperial family and city gods.

You can see the dedication inscription outside the entrance of the theatre today.

The reason the theatre is so well preserved is largely thanks to Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat, who restored the theatre in the 13th century and added elegant cobalt blue ceramic tilework to the structure. It was believed he used Aspendos as his summer residence.

The theater was well known for its acoustics throughout the centuries and is still used for performances to this day, including operas, concerts, and plays of folklore.

Monumental Nymphaeum

Aside from the theatre, much of the city has been left in a state of disrepair. There are many ruins and rocks around the complex, some said to be temples, market halls, and streets, but it’s quite hard to make out what these objects are.

One that has still stood the test of time is the Monumental Nymphaeum , which used to be a lavish fountain that stood outside the market hall. Today, you can still see the walls and arches where the Nymphaeum would have sat.

Aspendos Basilica

Across from the Nymphaeum is the Basilica , which still has all four walls standing (although lacking a roof). You can see the arches, naves, and windows, and if you use your imagination, it’s not impossible to think what it might have looked like.

Aspendos Aqueducts

Many people miss the aqueducts because they are not inside the ticketed complex of Aspendos, but don’t skip past them. The aqueducts are some of the best-preserved ruins after the theater and are a testament to Roman engineering.

You can either drive to the aqueducts and see them from the bottom ( we don’t recommend walking as we saw some wild dogs along that road ), or better yet, you can see incredible views of the aqueducts from above.

To see them from above, follow the path next to the ruins opposite the basilica around to the south side of the hill. You will also find signs directing you to the aqueduct along the main street.

Historic Aspendos Bridge

Located outside of the Aspendos complex, near the D400 Highway, is the historic Aspendos bridge, which crosses over the Köprüçay River.

The bridge has been lovingly restored to match its original style in the antiquity period. Although there isn’t much around the bridge, it’s a great place to sit and enjoy the serenity of the river and take in the scenic views of the river bank.

Aspendos Opening Hours & Entrance Fee

Aspendos is open all year round, but times vary depending on whether you are visiting in the summer or winter.

The summer opening hours for Aspendos are 8.00am – 8.00pm, with the ticket office closing at 7.30pm. In the winter, Aspendos is open from 8.30am – 5.30pm, with the ticket office closing at 5.15pm.

As of August 2023, the entrance fee for Aspendos is 350 Turkish Lira ($12.64 USD), or just 60 Turkish Lira ($2.17 USD) if you have the Antalya Museum Pass.

You can buy your entrance ticket for Aspendos from the ticket booth, located by the car park, next to the theater. You can also buy the Antalya Museum Pass from this ticket booth if you plan on visiting other museums in Antalya . The museum pass, as of August 2023, is 2200 Turkish Lira ($79.42 USD) for seven days, or 3500 Turkish Lira for 15 days ($126.36 USD).

Tips For Visiting Aspendos

Before you go, be sure to follow these words of advice to ensure your trip runs smoothly.

• Wear comfortable shoes. Although the theatre is close to the car park and has a flat, marble floor, the rest of the complex is less well maintained. The ground around Aspendos is rugged with lose rocks, plus you need to walk uphill a little way to see the rest of the ruins. Trainers will be better than sandals when visiting Aspendos.
• Carry plenty of water. It can get hot at Aspendos, especially when visiting in the summer. There is a shop selling ice creams, refreshments, and snacks, but it’s quite pricey, so we recommend bringing everything you need with you.
• Get your photo taken in gladiator clothes. This is a fun activity you can do at Aspendos. Head to the cafe behind the ticket office and you’ll find a photographer who has gladiator clothing. You can pay a fee and book a photo shoot in these period costumes. What a fun souvenir to take home!
• Visit later in the day. If you’re not booking a tour and you prefer to drive yourself, then visit later in the day to avoid the crowds. Since it opens until 8.00pm in the summer, you can easily visit at 5.00pm or 6.00pm to see it all.

The amount of time you spend at Aspendos largely depends on how interested you are in exploring it all. It will take approximately 1-1.5 hours to see the theatre and the ruins on the top of the hill.

In our personal opinion, we think Perge is better than Aspendos, simply because Perge is bigger, better preserved, and has more to see.

History of Aspendos

The ancient city of Aspendos was founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC and later came under Roman rule. During the Roman era, the city flourished and the Roman Theater was built to entertain the masses.

Despite earthquakes and other natural disasters, the theater has remained remarkably intact, a testament to the ingenuity of its ancient builders.

What to See?

When you visit the ancient city of Aspendos, there are several must-see attractions. Of course, the Roman Theater is the main draw, with its massive stone arches and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. You can explore the theater from top to bottom, taking in the stage, orchestra pit, and seating areas.

Beyond the theater, the ancient city of Aspendos boasts other ruins that are worth exploring. These include a stadium, where ancient athletes competed in foot races and other events, and an agora, a public square where locals would gather to trade goods and socialize.

You’ll explore the Roman Amphitheater at first sight. Other points of interest and architectural structures include the Stadion, aqueducts, baths, temples, city walls  and many other remains .

Aspendos can be explored by two parts that include the Lower and Upper Cities .

The famous Roman theater is situated in the Lower City, together with the other famous structure, the Stadion , where sport events took place during the period.

The Roman Theater of Aspendos is a magnificent structure and also one of the very well-preserved structures in the world. The inscriptions show that it was built during the period of the Roman Empreror Marcus Aurelius (161-180). The theater has an excellent plan and acoustics.

The Acropolis, Agora, Basilica, shops, Monumental Fountain, Odeon building are the remarkable ruins situated in the Upper City.

People come in droves to this ancient site near the modern-day village of Belkıs for one reason: to view the awesome theatre , considered the best-preserved Roman theatre of the ancient world. It was built during Aspendos' golden age in the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161–80 AD), and was used as a caravanserai by the Seljuks during the 13th century. The history of the city, though, goes all the way back to the Hittite Empire (800 BC).

After touring the area in the early 1930s, Atatürk declared Aspendos too fine an example of classical architecture to stay unused. Following a restoration that didn't please many historians, the 15,000-seat theatre became a venue once again. Operas, concerts and events, including the Aspendos Opera & Ballet Festival and Antalya's film festival , are staged here. The acoustics are excellent and the atmosphere at night is sublime.

Apart from the theatre, the ancient city ruins are extensive and include a stadium , agora and 3rd-century basilica , although there is little left intact. To reach them, follow the trail to the right of the theatre entrance. Further on are the remains of the city's aqueduct .

Aspendos lies 47km east of Antalya and 3km north of Belkıs. If driving, immediately on your right as you exit the D400 for Aspendos is a restored Seljuk-era switchback bridge with seven arches spanning the Köprü River. It dates from the 13th century but was built on an earlier Roman bridge.

Most folk visit Aspendos on a tour from Antalya or Side. Otherwise catch any dolmuş that runs between Antalya and Side along the D400 and get off at the Aspendos turn-off, from where you can walk (45 minutes) or hitch the remaining 4km to the site. Taxis waiting at the highway junction will take you to the site for (an outrageous) ₺20.

Aspendos Imagine the drama of centuries past

Aspendos , located about 50 kilometers east of Antalya, houses one of the largest Roman theatres ever built in Asia Minor. Built in 2nd century AD, the majestic theatre is awe-inspiring with its still-standing stage wall and seating for 15,000 – 20,000 people. Such care has been taken to restore the theatre, so the ancient tradition of performance continues in summer drama, ballet and opera performances. Most tour g roups highlight the area right inside the entrance gate, so expect crowds to be present in high season. If you want to experience the theatre without having to wait for people to pass, go in the morning when it opens or near closing time in the evening.   

Plan on a 30 minute visit if you just want to see the theatre, but we recommend packing snacks and water (or picking them up at the reasonably priced snack bar just inside the gate) and taking a couple of hours to roam the entire area. Follow the marked path up the hill and around to the left where you will find the Acropolis with remains of a basilica, agora, stadium and other various ruins. Our kids love to be set free here, and their creative minds run rampant as they climb and discover. With no ropes or areas blocked off, only their imagination and your comfort level limit the fun. A map as you approach the top that identifies the ruins, but otherwise, information is limited.   

To get a nice view looking down at the theatre, when you get to the one noticeable tree under which you can find shade just before the sign with a map on the Acropolis, climb to the left and up another hill. Follow the path and you will be rewarded with a chance to take in the entire majestic theatre in one shot, no drone necessary.  

For those who don’t mind walking a little farther, if you curve up to the right once you get to the top and keep going, you will come to an edge overlooking the remains of an ancient aqueduct and water towers, which is quite a site to see.   

Be warned: it can be hot up on the acropolis hill during summer months, so be sure to wear sunscreen and bring or purchase water as there is nothing once you pass the snack bar at the entrance. You might also want to wear sturdy and comfortable walking shoes as there is a slight incline up the hills and the path is rocky.   

For a special treat before or after your time in Aspendos, be sure to stop by  Kadir’in Yeri  to indulge in some delicious fresh-squeezed orange or pomegranate juice, Turkish tea, and flaky, filled gözleme (a deliciously layered Turkish pastry with meat, cheese, or potatoes that is a must try while you are here). You won’t be disappointed by their service with a smile.
