The Away Bigger Carry-On with Pocket Is the Smart Luggage I'd Buy

The Away Bigger Carry-On with Pocket is a well-designed smart suitcase with plenty of room and a removable battery for charging your gadgets.

Away is one of the biggest brands in the newly burgeoning Smart Luggage category. Yes, even the suitcase you take on vacation is getting tech-y features. The standard feature on all smart bags is a portable battery that snaps into the suitcase, so you're not scavenging for an outlet at the airport if you need to charge your phone. Away also sells an optional accessory that allows you to track your bag in case it gets lost.

The new Away Bigger Carry-On with Pocket ($295) adds an incredibly sensible feature: a nylon pocket. Why is this simple adjustment so important? It enhances the convenience factor of Away's suitcases, which feature an easy-to-use portable power supply for charging your phone, so you can keep your laptop and important documents within close reach.

On the downside, this pocket costs $50 extra, and that version of the Away isn't available in as many colors. Still, I found the Away Bigger Carry-On with Pocket to be an excellent, albeit pricey, way to travel.

What about that TSA ban on smart luggage?

So, you might have heard about American Airlines , Delta and Alaska Airlines instating bans on smart luggage at the end of last year. But fear not, traveler, not all smart suitcases are banned, only the ones with non-removable batteries. That means the current set of Away's luggage is free to fly the friendly skies, as its battery is easily ejected.

Away's luggage has long stood out for its elegant minimalist designs and for an ever-changing series of hues that were either eye-catching or elegant. Although I liked the dark, restrained blue (the pocket-bearing Away's colors  come in only black or blue) of the bag I tested, I'm a much bigger fan of the purple tone they've used in luggage released in partnership with Kode With Klossy, the coding summer camp from model/entrepreneur Karlie Kloss.

I tested the Bigger Carry-On format of the Away luggage, which measures 22.7 x 14.7 x 9.6 inches, weighs 7.3 pounds and has a capacity of 46 liters. That means it's larger, lighter and roomier than Muji's Adjustable Handle Hard Carry Suitcase (21.3 x 14.6 x 9.3 inches, 7.7 pounds, 35 liters). The smaller, heavier and less-spacious Raden A22 Carry -on (22 x 14 x 9 inches, 8.4 pounds and 35 liters) is the other smart suitcase with an ejectable battery that's ready for flight.

The Away's shell is made of a durable-feeling polycarbonate material that the company calls "unbreakable." A leather hinge on its spine reinforces the connection between its halves. Its 360-degree wheels did an exceptionally good job of rotating to the correct position, which I admit is kind of a challenge when you carry your luggage as hurriedly as I do. The rubber handles at the top and right of the Bigger Carry-On feel reliable. Raden loves to promote the durability of its luggage, with video of someone standing on it, and leaning in, seemingly trying to break it.

away travel luggage with charger

The Away's pocket is a nylon sleeve that measures 16.5 x 11.25 x 1 inches. That's big enough to fit my 2012 15-inch MacBook Pro, which is thicker than current models, but I instead opted to store my shampoo, body soap and face wash container bag in that sleeve, as that's equally important to have at the ready. The Muji and Raden bags have no such pockets.

away travel luggage with charger

After you unzip the Bigger Carry-On, you'll notice a mesh window can zip up the front half, and that there's a flat divider between both sides that offers a zipper-closed pouch. So, if you buy the Carry-On or Bigger Carry-On without the exterior pocket, you still get a place to store sensitive materials, but it's less accessible. Two buckles can secure that flat pocket against whatever is under it.

The insider lining of the suitcases are nylon, with zippers that run from the top to the bottom. This is because Away suitcases come with a lifetime warranty, and the nylon and zippers cover up the panels where Away's repair technicians  access handles and feet, if a repair is ever needed.

What's in the box

When I opened the large cardboard box with the Away Bigger Carry-on, I was pleasantly surprised to see the luggage came inside a canvas bag. While it seems like a great way to keep the Away clean while it's stored away, I could also see college students using it for an oversized laundry bag.

MORE: Best Smartphones on the Market Now

Inside the bottom half of the Bigger Carry-On, you'll see a small buttoned-up pouch containing a small bag, which I used for laundry during the trip. My extensive testing showed that this bag can fit two dress shirts, five T-shirts and five pairs of socks and briefs. Also, Away includes a USB-based power adapter and a micro-USB-to-USB cord, for charging its battery.

Portable Charger

The major perk of the Away luggage is the 37-watt, 10,000 mAh portable charger that sits conveniently in a slot below the handle, with a cover to protect its ports from spills A 10,000 mAh battery has enough juice to refuel most flagship smartphones completely, and some of them twice. The charger is easily ejectable; you just push down until it clicks, and it then jumps up. The Raden A22's power supply has a smaller capacity of 7,800 mAh.

It draws power from a micro USB port and features dual USB 3.0 ports for charging, with one being a 2.4-amp fast-charging port and the other a 1-amp standard-speed port. Personally, this was a lifesaver at the airport, as it meant I didn't have to run around the terminal, looking for an outlet so I could fill my phone up before a flight.

After I drained my iPhone 8 Plus of its charge, the Away charger's 2.4-amp port refueled 16 percent of the phone in 15 minutes, and 32 percent in 30 minutes. These numbers are similar to the fastest-charging portable charger we've tested, which filled 17 percent in 15 minutes and 33 percent in 30 minutes.

away travel luggage with charger

The portable charger was a lifesaver at the airport, as it meant I didn't have to run around the terminal, looking for an outlet so I could fill my phone up before a flight.

Also, dual ports means you can charge both your phone and your Bluetooth headphones, or one of your devices and one that belongs to a friend, if you're  kind and not traveling solo.

Bigger is better?

My biggest concern with the Away Bigger Carry-On was that Away was sure that the bag would be allowed on flights. I was not as confident, because the bag's measurements exceed the advertised baggage limit of 22 x 14 x 9 inches  that airlines declare online and at the gates, where they present the small compartment to check your bag's size.

away travel luggage with charger

Away says the bag would fit and be allowed on most planes, because the bin you check your bags in is larger than the advertised measurements. After a series of emails with a Delta employee named Michael, who couldn't clear up this question, I bit the bullet and decided to test the Bigger Carry-On to find out what would happen if I tried to get it on a plane. My concern was for naught, as the flight attendants on my Delta plane from New York to New Orleans didn't bat an eye at my luggage.

The Bigger Carry-On's capacity is 6.2 liters more than that of the Carry-On, and as someone whose suitcase was packed to the brim upon his return — I had to bring back beignet mix from the world-famous Café Du Monde — I was happy to have that space.

TSA-Friendly Lock

If you're worried about prying hands opening your checked luggage, you've probably breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of the TSA-approved combination lock.

away travel luggage with charger

I had no trouble setting a three-digit combination code on the lock, and locking the suitcase is as easy as snapping its zippers into the dual grooves at the top of the suitcase, near the keyhole that TSA agents can easily unlock. The Raden and Muji bags have similar locks.

Bluetooth location tracking

Away has partnered with the Bluetooth tracker-maker Tile for a $30 Tile Luggage Tag, which works by logging its location when its within 100 feet of the paired smartphone, and when any other Tiles come within that  range. From Tile's app, you can set your tracker to ring when it comes within the range, or instruct your phone to send a push notification when the Tile tracker is found.

away travel luggage with charger

At the baggage claim, I got a notification on my phone shortly before it appeared on the carousel, and could hear the tag's ringing chime as it came out of the entrance.

After I checked my bag for my return flight, I set it to alert me when the bag's location was next detected. I got my first notifications when the flight was getting closer to taking off, as the suitcase was loaded into the belly of the plane. At the baggage claim, I got a notification on my phone shortly before it appeared on the carousel, and could hear the tag's ringing chime as it came out of the entrance.

away travel luggage with charger

The Muji suitcase has no battery or location tracking, while the Raden includes built-in location tracking, and uses a similar group-based GPS tracking. The Raden can also weigh itself, which is helpful for those who overpack but also want to reduce fees at check-in.

Bottom Line

While you could place a Tile tracker and a portable charger inside  any suitcase, the Away Bigger Carry-On with Pocket streamlines the process completely. The amount of care that's gone into this design shows, and the simple move of adding an easy-access pocket has made the bag all the more convenient.

The Muji bag is a more-affordable $160, but it carries less luggage and doesn't include the portable battery or a place to easily access it. The $295 Raden packs more built-in smart features, but isn't as spacious. The Away, though, especially with the Tile tag, does a lot to take the pain out of going to the airport.

Are Away Carry-Ons Worth the Hype?

The Away Carry-On in front of a pink field, surrounded by a globe, a beige duffel, and some paper cacti.

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

In the past, we have not been fans of hard-sided luggage.

Hard-sided suitcases are not (despite what many may think) tougher than their soft-sided counterparts. But they do have attributes that some people may value over durability.

Hard-shell bags usually weigh less than fabric ones, and they come in far more colors, prints, and textures.

So if, for whatever reason, you prefer a hard-shell case, we recommend the  Away Carry-On after seven years of testing hard-sided suitcases.

away travel luggage with charger

Away The Carry-On

The best hard-sided carry-on suitcase.

This is a great-looking, resilient piece of hard-sided luggage, with top-of-the-line components—including sturdy zippers and the smoothest wheels we tested—at a decent price.

Buying Options

If you want the look and lighter weight of a hard-sided bag, the Away Carry-On is our choice. Weighing 7.6 pounds and able to hold nearly 40 liters, this bag stood out among competitors for its high-end components, such as sturdy zippers and the best-rolling wheels of any bag we tested. We liked the wide array of available colors and the strong yet flexible polycarbonate shell. Polycarbonate shells will always show more wear than soft-sided luggage. But after using multiple models over seven years, our testers found that the Away had endured most of the trials of traveling, with only a few scratches. Away bags are also backed by a lifetime limited warranty , which covers you for cracks in the shell and any broken hardware (wheels, handles, and zippers).

The research

Should you choose a hard-sided or soft-sided carry-on, is the away bag really the best hard-sided carry-on, our pick: away the carry-on, the competition.

I recommend soft-sided luggage for most people . This is a conclusion I’ve come to over nine years of testing bags, traveling with them, and interviewing travel experts, flight attendants, baggage handlers, and luggage designers. Soft-sided luggage picks up fewer scuffs and marks, and it generally provides multiple pockets and compartments, so it’s more adaptable to individual travel habits.

The ubiquitous clamshell design of a hard-sided case makes packing and unpacking clumsy. Split into two sections, the entire case splays out when you open it, which can be particularly awkward in confined spaces, such as small hotel rooms. It’s tricky to pack two shallow, equal-size compartments if you have large or bulky items. Counterintuitively, hard-sided luggage also lacks rigidity when it’s not fully packed, and most hard-sided designs lack external pockets.

So why would anybody still want a such a bag? Because hard-sided suitcases look great. They come in bold colors and patterns that soft-sided luggage is incapable of matching. The bags are sleek and minimal; they typically weigh less than fabric shells; and they’re as unencumbered by any pedestrian concerns over exterior pockets as the lithe influencer gliding through your Instagram feed is by traditional employment opportunities.

Okay, you want a hard-sided suitcase. Walk through any airport today and the Away’s popularity is self-evident. But Away is not the only brand out there creating a minimalist, hard-shelled piece of luggage. Which of these new pieces of luggage—deliriously engineered to make millennials pull out their wallets—are actually worth your money?

Bags like these have a few traits in common. They’re nearly always made of polycarbonate (that is, synthetic resin), although the less expensive models may use acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastics or blends of ABS plastic and polycarbonate to form their shells. (Polycarbonate is lighter and more flexible and has higher impact resistance than ABS.) These bags usually have a clamshell design—that is, they split down the middle and close with a zipper or locking hinge—and they normally come with four wheels, rather than two.

It’s difficult to know the strength of polycarbonate shells, and it’s difficult to test them. We can assess the flexibility, relative weight, and composition of the material, and take into account the brand’s reputation, but that’s only enough to give us a rough idea of the limits of these suitcases. Our primary goal here, however, wasn’t to find the strongest luggage. Instead, we wanted to figure out which bag was the best to pack and the best to travel with, and which was ultimately worth the price.

We chose seven models that we felt best represented this category of minimalist luggage: the Away Carry-On , the Muji Adjustable Handle Suitcase (since discontinued), Arlo Skye’s The Frame Carry-On , Lojel’s Cubo Medium , Herschel’s Trade Luggage Carry-On (since discontinued), Calpak’s Ambeur Carry-On , and the AmazonBasics Hardside Spinner Luggage - 24-Inch . We compared the bags’ layouts, the comfort of their handles, and their looks, and then narrowed down the list to our top four candidates. I’ve traveled intermittently with the Away since 2016. Over the years, we had additional testers travel with models of the Away, the Muji, the AmazonBasics, and the Arlo Skye.

The Away Carry-On in front of a pink field, surrounded by a beige duffel, and some paper cacti.

I’ve tested the Away Carry-On for seven years now and have also lent the bag to several friends and frequent travelers to see how they would enjoy using it. The minimalism of the Away bag stands out among the other hard-sided suitcases we tested. There is (despite the impracticality) a peculiar comfort that comes from carrying a suitcase without external pockets. Everything you are traveling with is packed away in a single brick. The simplicity of the design, the matte texture of the plastic, the luxurious quality of the interior liner—all of it invites you to believe that there’s one less thing to worry about while you’re traveling.

The Away bag itself feels good in your hands, and its wheels are noticeably better than those of any other bag we tested, except for those on the Muji. Away formerly used YKK zippers, but as of 2023, the company is sourcing its zippers from a number of suppliers. We’ll keep an eye on how the zippers of newer Away bags perform. We also liked the compatible packing cubes sold by Away , which are shaped to fit perfectly into the bags’ beveled corners.

The Away’s polycarbonate feels similar to that used in more high-end suitcases, such as the Rimowa Cabin S, which is twice as expensive as the Away. The polycarbonate that Away uses is both strong and flexible. When we first started testing the Away, seven years ago, we found that flexibility to be a liability, especially on airport carpets—the Away tended to flex into itself and jam up its own wheels when we pushed it in front of us. But the company seems to have fixed that problem—I haven’t experienced it with any of the latest models of this suitcase.

Away makes a similar model of suitcase with an expandable zipper, The Carry-On Flex . For all intents and purposes, the Flex is the same overall bag as the standard Carry-On except for the expanding center zipper and the price (it’s $50 more; also, the Carry-On original does go on sale more frequently). Personally, I’m not a fan of expanding zippers on suitcases. It feels like potentially just one more thing to break. But some people may prefer having the extra flexibility.

Closeup of a wheel on the Away luggage.

The Away has the most pleasant online ordering experience. Pick your size, pick your color, and wait for your luggage to arrive at your door. If you want a set of luggage that nests within itself like a set of Russian dolls, Away’s regular Carry-On and The Medium  checked bag can both be stacked into  The Large  checked bag. If you need only a single carry-on but want a larger option, The Bigger Carry-On gives you 8 more liters of space than the Carry-On, which holds almost 40 liters.

Like many hard-sided cases we tested, the Away has an optional removable battery and external USB ports for charging. However, we still aren’t convinced that your luggage needs to have a battery inside. Portable batteries are cheap and come in a bunch of sizes , but they’re useful on a plane only when they’re close to you. The quick-release latch on the Away’s battery compartment made it the easiest to access the encased batteries that we tested. But it’s ultimately still just a fancy place to put a portable battery. (It’s also begging to be forgotten if your bag ends up getting gate-checked, which is unadvisable .) And without quick-charging USB-PD ports, the Away battery is also a step behind more-current models. In short, we think you’ll be happier buying a battery separately and keeping it in your pocket or your under-seat bag.

The Away is covered by a lifetime limited warranty that should cover you in the event of any large failure, such as the shell cracking or the zipper breaking. (Cosmetic damage isn’t included.)

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Our complaints about the Away mirror the complaints we’ve always had with hard-sided luggage, beyond any decreased durability. The clamshell design of all of these bags, which split down the middle and open into two parts, makes them frustrating to pack and unpack. Packing cubes help a bit, but after years of packing and unpacking soft-sided luggage with single lids, I definitely find a clamshell design to be more finicky. If you want or need a single compartment, you’ll prefer soft-sided luggage.

The Away Carry-On, open, showing the zip compartments on each side.

Ultimately, what I’ve found is that those who loved the bag went into testing it already wanting to love it. And those who disliked the bag resented it before they even held it. But if you’ve decided that the bag’s sleek aesthetic and simple, uncomplicated design will make you feel calmer while you travel, you probably won’t be disappointed.

Dimensions: 21.7 by 13.7 by 9 inches Weight: 7.6 pounds Capacity: 39.8 liters

We found it hard to square The Frame Carry-On , from Arlo Skye, with its price, which is $200 higher than the Away’s. It’s a decent piece of luggage, but at that price you could spend a bit more for one of our soft-sided luggage upgrade picks from Briggs & Riley , which would be a much better suitcase all around.

Although we liked the uncommon top-loading design of the Lojel Cubo Medium , the internal organization of the lid made packing it difficult. We also weren’t impressed by the Lojel’s zippered expansion system, which made the suitcase feel bulkier than our picks.

The Herschel Trade Luggage Carry-On is a little less expensive than the Away carry-on, but we preferred the Away’s more solid feel. If this bag were half the price, it would be a more competitive choice. (It’s now discontinued.)

The Calpak Ambeur Carry-on is fine but not great. We ultimately aren’t impressed with how the Calpak handled—it felt jittery on normal airport-floor surfaces.

The AmazonBasics Hardside Spinner Luggage - 24-Inch is a surprisingly good bag for just over $100. However, as with the Calpak bag, the weaker ABS plastic shell is just not as tough as a polycarbonate shell. We think it’s worth investing a little more in your luggage. Your suitcase will last longer and work better.

Review of the updated Away The Bigger Carry-On: Same great bag, revamped features

Summer Hull

Editor's Note

  • The Away The Carry-On and the Away The Bigger Carry-On bags offer high-end luggage looks and features.
  • Standout features include a handy mesh laundry compartment, fun colors, optional ejectable battery and 360-degree spinner wheels.
  • However, the bag does scuff, and there are some elements to be aware of before spending close to $300.

Since it debuted in 2015, Away has become a popular luggage company with bags that are often easy to spot in every corner of an airport, from airline lounges to baggage carousels. It's almost like the iPhone of carry-on bags — simple, stylish and priced in a way that walks that line of exclusivity while simultaneously feeling affordable enough for many frequent travelers. It likely doesn't hurt Away's popularity — and visibility — that a few times a year, it unveils seasonally refreshed colors for its bags, too.

Right now, you can purchase away bags for what is likely the best deal of the year with 20% off for Black Friday . This Black Friday sale drops the price to $236 for the Away The Bigger Carry-On and $220 for the Away The Carry-On . And if someone with an Away bag refers you, that can drop the price an additional 20% as those discounts stack.

Personally, my family now has five Away bags: two child-size bags (that are no longer available) and one adult carry-on size from a limited-edition collection inspired by the northern lights as well as two of the more traditional colors and styles. The northern lights Away bag, which was beautiful when it first arrived at my door, didn't hold up very well.

But the Away The Bigger Carry-On in the coast color that Away provided for product testing a year ago and, more recently, the revamped design in olive, have both held up wonderfully overall.

Now that I've flown more than a dozen flights with the revamped Away The Carry-On in olive and spent a year and about 100,000 miles with the previous version in coast, I'm here to share my review of the Away The Bigger Carry-On bags. I'll also talk about some differences between the most recently released version and previous iterations.

What you should look for in a carry-on bag

The best carry-on bags have a few things in common. Notably, they have a sturdy handle and are easy to roll — not only on smooth airport surfaces but also on some slightly imperfect surfaces. Sometimes, taking that train to the city center and walking the rest of the way to the hotel while pulling your bag is the best course of action, and your bag needs to be able to handle that journey.

Ideally, carry-on luggage has some compartments to help keep your belongings separated and make the act of physically closing and opening the bag a bit easier. No one wants all the items that were so carefully packed exploding everywhere, thanks to gravity during the zipping and unzipping process.

Strong zips. (Photo by Isabelle Raphael/The Points Guy)

The best carry-on bags don't waste a ton of weight on the bag itself and fit in airline overhead bins, pushing right up to that maximum limit allowed so you have as much packing space as possible. They're also built to withstand the harsh realities of frequently flying without becoming the ugly duckling at the baggage carousel shortly after buying them.

Why we like Away's The Bigger Carry-On

Spoiler alert: After a year of using Away The Carry-On (often instead of my beloved Rimowa), I'm a fan.

While I still love my Rimowa carry-on bags that I've used for almost a decade, there is no question that the Away bag is more functional in a few ways — which is why it is now the primary bag in my rotation.

The mesh, zippered laundry compartment on one side of the bag is one of my favorite components, as it is so useful for keeping things organized and in place. The other side of the bag can then be used for packing cubes and the like, making it easy to pack, unpack and keep everything together.

In fact, the updated carry-on model released in the summer of 2023 has even more pockets and sturdier zips. It also has redesigned handles that are easier to grip and refreshed 360-degree spinner wheels.

Purchase link: Away The Bigger Carry-On

The zippers themselves are strong and easy to move, even when you may have slightly overpacked and are leaning all your weight on the top of the suitcase to get it to close while you zip it up. I absolutely do this all the time and am continually impressed at how much I can cram in there.

away travel luggage with charger

The 360-degree spinner wheels have made moving through the airport, along sidewalks and more basically a dream.

away travel luggage with charger

As someone who avoids checking a bag as much as possible, I'm particularly fond of the slightly larger size of Away's standard carry-on bag.

The Bigger Carry-On allows you to add an extra set or two of clothes or one more pair of shoes without drifting into that "must check a bag" situation. We'll get more into the exact dimensions in a bit, but this little extra room makes a noticeable difference when packing.

Things to know about The Bigger Carry-On from Away

While this bag can be thrown in and out of a cab and dragged off a carousel without a worry in terms of functionality, be prepared for some scratches on the shell. (If you really want to see the durability in action, jump to the three-minute mark of the "Kids Away Luggage review video" at the end of this article to see how we tried to destroy that bag.)

Even with normal wear and tear, scuffs can absolutely be seen on the matte material. I found some on my test bag after just the first few flights.

away travel luggage with charger

Additionally, I've discovered that this coast color is quite popular, as I've been in a few situations now where multiple people have had the exact same bag.

Without something clearly identifying the bag as yours, you're risking bag mix-ups. Consider getting some kind of special identifier (such as a colorful luggage tag) and toss an Apple AirTag in for good measure, just in case. Or, choose a non-traditional or limited-edition color that fewer people will have.

One thing that's no longer an option on the Away carry-on bags is the removable battery, which I think is a good thing as I get stopped frequently when boarding flights to ensure mine is removed on the bags we have that still have that slot. The bag we got over the summer of 2023 does not have that battery slot, which I consider an improvement.

How Away's carry-on measures up

Regularly priced starting at $295, the Away The Bigger Carry-On from Away is currently available in 12 colors (though a few are temporarily sold out or are limited-edition options) and is sized to fit in the overhead bins on most airlines.

Some of the Away bag's features include:

  • Durable polycarbonate shell
  • Leather detailing, including a black leather luggage tag
  • TSA-approved combination lock for extra safety
  • 360-degree spinner wheels that ensure a smooth ride
  • Interior compression system
  • Hidden laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate
  • Underside grab handle (new to the 2023 model)

away travel luggage with charger

The Bigger Carry-On that I've been trying out has the following measurements:

  • Exterior: 22.7 inches by 15.4 inches by 9.6 inches
  • Interior: 20.9 inches by 15 inches by 7.9 inches
  • Weight: 7.4 pounds
  • Capacity: 47.9 liters

away travel luggage with charger

For reference, Delta Air Lines , American Airlines and United Airlines all have posted maximum carry-on sizes of 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches, which is technically a hair smaller than this bag on all sides.

In practice, on most flights, a bag that is a fraction of an inch over will still fit in the sizer and in the overhead bin. Still, know that there is a possibility that you may need to gate-check your bag .

Southwest Airlines currently has a maximum carry-on size of 24 inches by 16 inches by 10 inches, which means this larger carry-on does officially comply with that carrier's baggage dimension limits.

Away The Carry-On vs. Away The Bigger Carry-On

The two main differences between the Away The Carry-On and the Away The Bigger Carry-On are price and size.

The standard Away carry-on bag is usually about $20 cheaper than the Bigger version, at $275 instead of $295 (prices vary by color and exact model). Additionally, the traditional Away The Carry-On measures 21.7 inches by 14.4 inches by 9 inches, meaning it is smaller than the maximum carry-on size requirements for all major U.S. airlines, unlike the Bigger version. In the U.S., that difference isn't likely to cause issues most of the time, though it may be problematic when flying carriers internationally.

As someone who stuffs their carry-on to the brim, the additional capacity in The Bigger Carry-On is worth it.

But if you don't find yourself needing every square inch in your carry-on, then getting The Carry-On will save you a few dollars and be sure to keep you within the posted airline carry-on size limits.

Even with the scuff marks that just happen over time, my Away suitcases still look pretty good.

I love the more voluminous Bigger version. I'm also a sucker for the zippered side of the bag that makes organizing — especially in conjunction with packing cubes — a cinch. And in perhaps the best test of all, my kids will pretty much only pull the Away bags on the rare occasion that some of our other bags are in the mix at the airport because they roll so much easier than all of our other luggage brands.

The new version that came out in 2023 is even better, especially with that handy spot to grip when pulling in or out of the overhead bins.

We're pretty much a fully Away bag family at this point, as they are the right balance of quality, style, durability and price. I give it a big thumbs up if you are in the market for a new carry-on bag this year.

Review: Away’s USB-powered Carry-On luggage helped me survive CES

Avatar for Michael Steeber

Traveling can disrupt even the best laid plans, and with today’s connected lifestyles, the stress of an unexpected situation is only exacerbated if you’re worrying about keeping your devices powered up. Combine that with the chaos and and spectacle that is the annual Consumer Electronics Show , and you’ve got the perfect storm for a travel headache.

Earlier this month, I spent 5 days in Las Vegas for CES 2018 . With me came The Carry-On , modern and thoughtfully designed luggage with USB power sent over to try out by Away . Over the course of the show I put The Carry-On to the test, traversing miles of hotel, casino, and airport carpeting to bring you my thoughts. Let’s take a look at how well it held up and how it kept my devices charged…

Before we dive into the details, it’s important to establish a little context about Away. The company was formed by two former executives from Warby Parker – the eyewear manufacturer.

Away prides themselves on thoughtful design, a quality that fans of Apple products will surely appreciate. The company claims that their luggage typically costs less than other premium brands, even though they use materials of the same quality. What caught my attention is how Away luggage is truly made for modern lifestyles.

away travel luggage with charger

Clever interior compartments, a built-in USB charger, and carefully selected materials all recognize the most common pain points of travel and try to mitigate them. You can tell that the products were designed by people who actually travel, not in a sterile lab.

Away sells several sizes of luggage, but I chose to try out their smallest size for adults, The Carry-On. I’m a fairly light traveler, trying to avoid checking bags if possible. My previous rolling luggage was old and tired, so I was immediately taken by the build quality of The Carry-On when I pulled it out of the box. Away sent me the black model, but I would recommend a lighter (but not too light) shade if you’re purchasing for yourself. Dirt and winter salt residue quickly built up on the exterior of the luggage as soon as I got outside of my house.

away travel luggage with charger

The exterior of The Carry-On, like all of Away’s products, is made of what they describe as unbreakable polycarbonate. I took the company’s word, and tossed my luggage into airport bins, thumped it down steps, and pressed the case’s capacity to the limit without fear of cracking. It held up. Around the exterior you’ll also find three handles – one on the side, one on top, and a telescoping handle for rolling the luggage. The exterior also holds two of my favorite features – a combination lock and USB charger. More on these later.

I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to fit 5 days of clothing plus the 10,000 free USB flash drives from CES into carry-on sized luggage, but I was thankfully proved wrong. Packing to leave was made easy thanks to the interior design of the case. The top shell contains a sequestered zippered section that I used to store dirty clothes, and a top mesh zipper panel to hold everything in place and compress it to fit. Away also includes a dirty clothes drawstring bag, but I found that I didn’t need to use it.

The bottom shell of the luggage accommodates space to enclose the tires and telescoping handle, so some internal room is sacrificed. This wasn’t a problem, but makes for an oddly shaped and bumpy interior. Two buckling straps allow you to compress your clothes underneath a hard mesh organizer that folds over the top. Without this feature, there’s no way I would’ve gotten the case closed given how tightly I packed it.

Arriving at General Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee, my favorite feature of The Carry-On came in handy right away – the tires. Unlike my old luggage, Away’s four tires freely pivot in any direction, meaning that you can roll the case forward, backward, left, right, behind or alongside you without shuffling it around. This was especially welcome during the frantic run-walk from my vehicle to the airport terminal necessitated by the subzero temperatures that Milwaukee was experiencing when I arrived.

Not quite everything stays in Vegas.

Inside, The Carry-On fit comfortably in Southwest’s luggage sizer. I breathed a tiny sigh of relief. Navigating through the TSA line, I was a little worried about the case’s built-in USB charger. Batteries in luggage have been in the news recently, thanks to tightened security regulations . I wondered if I’d get through the line without issue, or if I’d need to remove the battery in order to bring the luggage on board. Away promises that the battery is TSA-approved, and indeed I faced no issue.

Boarding my flight, The Carry-On stowed easily in the overhead bin, but was noticeably heavier than my old luggage when I hoisted it up above my head. This wasn’t a problem for such a small case, but might be an issue with larger luggage.

Staying in Vegas

I arrived in Las Vegas on a Saturday for press events, a few days before the official start of CES the following Tuesday. While most of the show’s attendees hadn’t yet arrived, Vegas is busy even on a normal day. Needing to store my luggage at hotel bell desks all over the strip made me appreciate The Carry-On’s built-in, TSA-approved combination lock. I could leave for the day’s events with peace of mind that nobody was rummaging through my extensive collection of Oxford shirts.

away travel luggage with charger

As soon as I was settled in, I popped out the built-in 10,000 mAh battery and stowed it in my laptop bag. This battery literally powered my CES coverage from the show floor all week, where a phone charge will cost you $1.99, and even low power mode isn’t enough to get an iPhone through the day. I was running low by early afternoon every day, and without a backup battery I wouldn’t have been able to bring you 9to5Mac’s video coverage of CES. Since the battery is so capacious, I only needed to top it off at my room twice all week.

CES operated under heightened security this year, and rolling suitcases are no longer allowed on the show floor. Due to these restrictions, I kept my luggage in my hotel room as much as possible during the actual show. The aforementioned storage compartments meant that I could live right out of the case without having to unpack and shuffle through my items.

As my time at CES came to a close, I tossed my Carry-On into the back of a Lyft and braced myself for the gridlocked crawl back to the airport. I had successfully navigated CES. While I picked up a cold on the show floor, my luggage returned home unscathed (aside from a little Las Vegas dirt).

Could I have made it through my travels with my old luggage? Sure, but Away’s goal is more ambitious than that. Your attention is pulled a thousand different ways when traveling, and your luggage is the last thing you want to spend mental energy worrying about. The Carry-On helped me have a less stressful, more productive week. If you travel frequently, it’s a purchase that’ll be well worth your investment. The Carry-On (and larger sizes) are available on Away’s website starting at $225.

Luggage these days is much more than just a way to carry your stuff from home to the hotel and back again. Rebooted and redesigned, suitcases are now more stylish than ever, with smart features and sleek upgrades that have made them Instagram-famous and utterly desirable.

American luggage brand Away has gone back to basics with bags and cases that are designed to work with you and offer creative solutions that help you enjoy your travel experience better.

Every piece in its collection has been thoughtfully designed to function perfectly and provide practical solutions to real-life travel problems.

From carry-ons to checked luggage and daypacks to a garment bag, every piece from Away has an attractive minimalist aesthetic on the outside, complemented by interiors that will transform the way you carry your belongings.

Bottom Line: With compression compartments to maximize your luggage load, hardshell exteriors that can be thrown around and still look super chic, and even a hidden battery to charge your devices on the go, the people at Away may just have created the ultimate suitcase.

Away Travel Carry-On Luggage Review

Away Luggage

With a hard, impenetrable shell, The Carry-On looks sleek and minimalist , and will never be out of place being pulled through any cosmopolitan metropolis or high-tech airport.

Unlike most monotone hipster carry-alls, The Carry-On is available in a range of colors, including navy, coast grey, sky blue, green, asphalt, white, sand, blush, and violet. Finding the right color to suit your personality shouldn’t be a problem.

Away Luggage compartments

Sized to fit in the overhead luggage compartments of most major airlines , this is practically the perfect carry-on . Measuring 21.7 x 13.7 x 9 inches on the outside, you can stow above or below every time you fly.

On the inside, you’ll find 2 separate compartments. A large zippered compartment to one side will deftly house your shoes, toiletries, and other hard objects. While to the other side, there is an impressively large open space for your clothing. The internal measurements are 20 x 13.5 inches with a total capacity of 39.8 liters.

Away Luggage compression straps

Want to fit more in? One of the absolute best bits of the Away brand cases is the unique interior compression system .

Much more than just a couple of straps to pull around a bulging clothes pile, this offers an entire semi-rigid panel on top that squashes down to give you those all-important extra inches of interior space when you need it.

Away luggage pocket

If that wasn’t enough, the case also comes with a washable laundry bag that folds up when not in use. While the bag isn’t huge, it’s fine to keep dirty items separate over a long weekend.

Away Luggage hard shell

Made from an impenetrable shell that bends under pressure, but never breaks, The Carry-On offers first-class construction.

The sturdy, hard-wearing polycarbonate outer shell can take its fair share of knocks and bangs, while the softly lined interiors and genuine leather luggage tags and hinges give it a luxury feel that belies its functional form and price tag.

Bottom Line: By cleverly blurring the lines between a traditional hardshell suitcase and a flexible nylon/canvas one, The Carry-On offers rigid durability alongside complete adaptability.

Away Carry-On Luggage Black

This smart little case can charge cell phones, tablets , e-readers , and anything else that’s powered by a USB cord. With enough energy tucked away to fully charge your iPhone up to 4 times, The Carry-On is the ultimate companion for the tech-savvy traveler.

You can even fly with your electable suitcase battery as it’s compliant with current airline policies, FAA, TSA, and DOT regulations and meets UN/DOT 38.3 requirements. When you reach your destination, plug it in and let it recharge before you set off once again.

Be aware that while it can be carried in the cabin, checked luggage cannot contain lithium batteries. The Carry-On battery can be removed in a matter of seconds and carried with you in the cabin.

These sorts of design features add value to you as the passenger and set the Away brand miles apart from the competition.

Hot Tip: If the charging capability isn’t your thing or you already own a power bank, you can opt to purchase the case without a battery, which will make the case lighter and increase the interior space. Just know that if you opt for this you can’t add a battery later on.

Away Luggage wheels

With 4 360-degree spinning Japanese Hinomoto wheels, The Carry-On makes light work of long runways and endless terminal buildings. Agile and incredibly easy to maneuver, you can guide the case with just a single fingertip should you need to.

Away luggage wheels

The pull-along handle is light and smooth and effortlessly extends or retracts to suit the height of the carrier. Made from superior materials, the telescopic handle is just like any other suitcase handle, only that bit better.

Away Luggage TSA lock

With not one, but 2 zippers for easy opening and closing, The Carry-On does away with the need for separate locks by offering an integrated combination lock. Just activate a 3-digit combination and the mechanism secures the zippers in seconds.

As the lock is part of the actual suitcase, you never run the risk of losing your travel lock again, and even more impressive, the lock is TSA-approved to allow agents access when they need it.

All Away Carry-On cases come complete with a limited lifetime warranty that covers any damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers, or anything else that functionally impairs the luggage.

The electronic components are guaranteed for 2 years. That said, the good folks at Away do offer replacement batteries should you experience any issues outside of this warranty period.

Impressive credentials and an even more impressive Instagram campaign have made the Away cases some of the most sought-after in the travel sector. But, while they may be both pretty and practical, there are just a couple of really tiny downsides, too.

If you want to recharge your case to keep your phone topped up, you’re realistically looking at an overnight charge in your hotel before it has enough power to start charging your devices again.

While these cases are incredibly durable and designed to last a long time, they’re best suited to vacations and tourist travel . What is essentially a lifestyle brand with an excellent social media following, it attracts travelers who want to see the world without roughing it.

Globetrotting adventurers who plan to stray from the road less traveled may find a backpack or duffel bag more practical and hard-wearing.

Finally, the telescopic handles are a bit on the shaky side. While adept enough to wheel your case through the airport, you can still feel a slight tremor when you walk.

Bottom Line: All of these are minor gripes, and for the most part, The Carry-On from Away is an excellent suitcase that delights in providing both form and function to give you a good-looking case with on-trend extras.

Other Away Travel Luggage

Concerned that The Carry-On isn’t right for you? Away offers a full collection of luggage essentials to suit every traveler and every journey.

  • The Bigger Carry-On — This carry-on is just like the standard one, but is a little bit bigger. Measuring up at 22.7 x 14.7 x 9.6 inches, this little beauty was designed to squeeze into the cabin bag containers found at check-in and to give the user some all-important extra internal inches. It also has just over 8 liters of extra space compared to the standard-sized The Carry-On.
  • The Medium — This midsize suitcase is designed to be checked in the hold when you travel and offers enough space for all those extra outfits, as well as the same unique compression system and high-quality polycarbonate construction. It measures 26 x 18.5 x 11 inches and has 68.8 liters of storage space.
  • The Large — Away’s biggest suitcase yet, this full-size family case has the same attractive and durable polycarbonate shell, interior compression system, and removable laundry bag. Just as impressive as The Carry-On, only much bigger! It measures 29 x 20.5 x 12.5 inches and has 99.2 liters of storage space.

Away Carry-On Luggage With Pocket

  • The Carry-On with Pocket  — Like a regular carry-on , only better, this is still the perfect size for overhead storage bins, but with an extra, useful pocket. The nylon front pocket is big enough and protective enough to carry your boarding passes and travel documents, without eating into that all-important interior space.
  • The Bigger Carry-On with Pocket — This suitcase offers an external nylon pocket that’s perfect for carrying your vacation documents, magazines, or other useful bits of kit close by your side when you travel.
  • The Daily Carry-On with Pocket — A new release by Away, this carry-on is slightly smaller than its other carry-on counterparts and is geared towards short trips and business travel. The pocket provides easy access to your daily essentials.

Make it a family affair with The Kids’ Carry-On . Just like the regular version, your mini-me can enjoy a shell that never breaks, a battery that charges their phone or tablet, and a versatile interior with a compression system and separate laundry bag.

This is the very same as the grown-up version but is just a little bit smaller in size at 18 x 12 x 9 inches with a 31-liter capacity.

Away Carry-On Luggage Aluminum

  • The Carry-On: Aluminum Edition — Made with a durable aluminum shell and leather-wrapped, slow-release handles, this little beauty offers the same standards as the regular The Carry-On, but this time is made of even more robust stuff.
  • The Bigger Carry-On: Aluminum Edition The Carry-On — Sized up but still made from aluminum, this is the bigger of the 2 carry-on cases. It offers all the same great features but in a slightly larger package.
  • The Medium: Aluminum Edition — With the same beautiful curved lines and an attractive aluminum shell, the medium-size case is perfect for those who want more than a carry-on but don’t crave a full-size case.
  • The Large: Aluminum Edition — With enough room for all the family, the trusty aluminum shell will protect everything inside. Shoehorn even more in with the interior compression system, and as you have come to expect, bring home your dirties in the removable laundry bag.

Modern-day luggage is fast becoming a reflection of the way we travel and indeed, where we travel to.

Away not only creates beautifully designed, cleverly crafted suitcases and bags that are more than fit for purpose, but it is also one of the few brands that take a holistic approach to modern-day travel. It offers practical solutions to the rigors of reaching your next destination with ease.

Hardshell exteriors, internal compression systems, and the ability to charge almost every kind of device on the go makes the Away cases some of the very best, and most thoughtful, on the market today.

I’ve Been Using Away Luggage For Years — Here’s Why I Recommend It

By Morgan Greenwald

Morgan Greenwald

If you’ve done any sort of research on popular luggage brands or have spent some time scrolling through Instagram, odds are you’ve come across Away , the trendy, DTC luggage brand known for its sleek suitcases and vibrant colorways. The polycarbonate shell suitcases have maintained their popularity almost a decade after their launch and social media virality, but for those who may be hesitant to spend upwards of $300 on a piece of luggage, the question remains: Is Away really worth the hype (and price tag)?

At a Glance: Our Top Picks

  • Editor’s Choice: Away The Carry-On Flex
  • Large Carry-on Pick: Away Bigger Carry-On
  • Also Consider: Away Large Suitcase

As a journalist and avid traveler, I have used Away’s Carry-On Flex , Bigger Carry-On , and Large suitcase since 2018 to travel everywhere from Spain and France to California and Vermont. During this time, I’ve tried other suitcase brands like Monos and Samsonite , but Away has remained my top choice thanks to its roomy interior and lightweight shell. There are some drawbacks to the bags — notably, the lighter colors scuff pretty easily and it can be hard to find your suitcase on a conveyor belt full of Away bags — but ultimately the pros far outweigh the cons, especially if you travel often.

In This Article

What is away luggage, what makes away luggage so unique.

  • Away Luggage Pros & Cons

How Does Away Luggage Compare to Competitors?

  • Is Away Luggage Worth it?

Away was founded in 2015 by Jen Rubio and Steph Korey, who previously worked together at Warby Parker. They originally launched with a single product — the Carry-On — but later expanded their suitcase offerings and eventually branched out into accessories, totes, and other travel-related essentials.

Since its launch in 2015, Away has taken customer feedback to heart, and the brand’s suitcases have evolved significantly: Among other things, the bags now have a grab handle under the wheels that make them easier to carry, and previously existing handles now protrude less. The carry-on pieces were previously offered with built-in battery packs, but these have since been phased out based on customer feedback. (As someone who owns one of the older battery pack models, I agree that while the battery pack was convenient, it’s just as convenient to bring a portable charger with you on the plane.)

There are a lot of things to appreciate about Away’s suitcases . All of the brand’s signature carry-ons and checked bags are protected by a polycarbonate hard shell that, according to Travelpro , is sturdier and more crack-resistant than other common hardside materials like polypropylene. Thanks to the hard shell, it’s also easy to fill the suitcase to the brim without worrying about whether it will fit in an overhead compartment. “I am an overpacker through and through, and I love that the shell is hard but also flexible, so I can pack as much as I want into this bag that fits into a carry-on compartment,” says Becca Higgins , Rolling Stone ’s senior producer of artist relations who has been using her Bigger Carry-On for years.

The bags are also secured by a three-digit, TSA-approved combination lock that’s built directly into the suitcase. (A word to the wise, though: Do not forget your lock combination. More on that later.)

From a size standpoint, the Away bags also offer a lot of bang for your buck. All of the suitcases have an interior compression system that keeps your belongings compartmentalized while condensing them down. If you tend to be an overpacker, the Flex suitcases also come with zipper expansions that enlarge the interior to give you more packing space.

Away The Carry-On Flex Review

Away carry-on flex.

Specs: • Measurements: 21.7″ x 13.7″ x 9″ (exterior) and 20” x 13.5” (interior)
 • Weight: 8.15 lbs
 • Capacity: 39.8 L (46.7 L when expanded)

Away’s The Carry-On is the bag that first helped the company rise to prominence in 2015. The smallest suitcase option in Away’s lineup, the bag has deep compartments on either side that are secured with either a zippered mesh sleeve or a buckled mesh compression divider.

“The square shape maximizes the usable storage in all bag sizes,” says Jessica Seib , Rolling Stone ’s VP of Commerce who owns several Away bags. “The mesh zip compartments and divider built-ins also make sorting clean and dirty or delicate clothing and shoes within one bag a breeze.”

When I used my Carry-On Flex for a four-day trip to Lake Placid, I had no trouble packing six outfits, a few sweaters, and all of my toiletries; however, there wasn’t any room left to pack a second pair of shoes, so I would recommend The Bigger Carry-On Flex (which has a 55.7-liter capacity) if you want to pack larger items like sneakers or a hair styling tool.

Away The Bigger Carry-On Review

Away the bigger carry-on.

Specs: • Measurements: 22.7″ x 15.4″ x 9.6″ (exterior) and 20.9″ x 15″ x 7.9″ (interior)
 • Weight: 7.9 lbs
 • Capacity: 47.9 L

The Bigger Carry-On has been my go-to travel companion since I first bought it in 2018. Though it’s just slightly bigger than the Carry-On Flex at its full capacity, I have found that it offers more room for larger items like shoes, jackets, and heavy sweaters. I have relied on my Bigger Carry-On alone for week-long work trips, bachelorette trips, and more; on average, I can fit up to eight or nine outfits in my bag, but that number gets smaller depending on how many larger items I need to bring with me.

Away The Large Review

Away the large.

Specs : • Measurements: 29″ x 20.5″ x 12.5″ (exterior) and 26.9″ x 19.7″ x 10.6″ (interior)
 • Weight: 12.1 lbs
 • Capacity: 99.2 L

Away’s checked bag offerings include The Medium, The Large, and The Trunk, as well as Flex and Aluminum versions of the first two. The Large , which remains relatively lightweight at 12.1 pounds, has a shockingly sizeable interior; on a recent two-week trip across Germany and Denmark, I was able to fit everything into my Large suitcase without having to bring a carry-on (on top of my usual outfits, I had to pack gym clothes and a dirndl for Oktoberfest!).

The Large is easily my favorite Away suitcase of all the ones I own thanks to how reliable it is on longer trips. My light pink shell is pretty scuffed up after years of use, but there isn’t any damage that would compromise the integrity of the suitcase. The other thing that I love about The Large is that, when I’m not traveling, my Bigger Carry-On can be stored inside of it so the two suitcases aren’t taking up as much space inside my closet.

Away Luggage Pros:

• The Away suitcases are relatively lightweight, which makes them easier to lift into overhead bins and makes it easier to stay under the weight limit.
 • The suitcases’ 360-degree wheels hold up well after several years of use and easily glide across all types of surfaces, from carpeting to asphalt — “the wheels are 360-degree magic and so smooth,” Higgins says.
 • Away’s customer service is excellent and the lifetime limited warranty covers most major damage.
 • The myriad pockets (and optional packing cubes ) allow for maximized use of the interior space.

Away Luggage Cons:

• The polycarbonate shell scuffs relatively easily, especially in the lighter colorways.
 • The combination lock is impossible to reset if you forget the code.
 • The suitcases are on the pricier side, so they may not make sense for people who don’t travel as often.
 • Since Away bags are so popular, it can be easy to mix your bag up with someone else’s. “My suggestion: Buy an Away suitcase and then pick up one of these cheap accessories to help differentiate your bag from someone else’s,” says Tim Chan , PMC’s associate VP of editorial and commerce.

While I have found that the Away suitcases best fit my travel needs, some of the other popular luggage brands may be a better option depending on how often you travel and the type of travel you’re doing. If you’re looking for something to use for work travel, for instance, I am a fan of Monos’ Carry-On Pro ; in addition to boasting many of the features of the Away bag — like a polycarbonate shell, combination lock, and 360-degree spinning wheels — it also has an exterior pocket that can hold a laptop, notebooks, and other work travel essentials. A more affordable alternative that Chan is also a fan of is Brandless’ Checked Luggage : “It features a suitcase with vertical lines (Away has horizontal lines) so I can always pick my bag out of a crowd,” he says.

Though many of the popular luggage retailers offer similar features, one of the biggest selling points when it comes to Away is the company’s customer service. Most Away bags come with a lifetime limited warranty , which covers everything from cracks and unusable wheels to broken zippers and fabric tears. “My first Medium Bag zipper was damaged by an airline bag handler when it was brand new. I brought the bag to an Away store in Brooklyn and received a brand new bag within minutes,” Seib recalls.

So, Is Away Luggage Worth it?

Away’s luggage isn’t going to make sense for everybody; for those who travel less often, something more affordable might make more sense, and if you’re mostly traveling for work, you might want to consider a carry-on that offers easy access to your laptop, notebook, and electronics. However, if you travel regularly and are looking for a durable, sleek suitcase that’s easy to organize, the Away bags are well worth the price tag when you consider how long they last and the brand’s lifetime warranty. “I basically overstuff my suitcase and put it through the wildest conditions and it comes out unscathed,” Higgins notes. Away even has a 100-day free return policy on unused bags, so if you’re on the fence, you can order one to test out at home before you fully commit.

What is smart luggage?

line break

Smart luggage refers to suitcases with tech capabilities — typically USB ports to connect portable chargers for easy access. Some styles include their own portable chargers, while others require you to provide your own. Either way, you'll never have a dead phone while traveling. Make sure to bring a charging cable as no smart luggage picks include them. In addition to chargers, there are some newer suitcases with self-weighing options and tracking capabilities, but they have a much higher price tag and we've found they don't meet our standards for top performance. If those features are important to you, try a hand scale or a luggage tracker .

How we test smart luggage

line break

Our textile pros spend months reviewing luggage using standardized test methods and state-of-the-art lab equipment, then set up an obstacle course for users to try them out. In our latest evaluation, our pros tested 25 styles, leading to over 3,000 data points to analyze before making our selections . Here's how we rate the luggage in our evaluations:

✔️ Technology capabilities: Our pros try out each smart luggage's tech features and rate them for ease of use and accessibility.

✔️ Size and weight : Each piece of luggage is weighed when empty because we've found the online specs aren't always accurate. We then put the luggage in a 22" x 14"x 9" area to see if it complies with average airline carry-on restrictions.

✔️ Packing capabilities : Our analysts pack each piece of luggage using a standard load with real travel items like clothing, shoes, toiletries and more. In this process, we rate the ease of opening and closing the zippers, ease of accessing the compartments and how much of our load actually fits inside. We also make note of the important specifications, like the wheels, telescopic handle and any extra features. When the bag is fully packed, we practice rolling it over different surfaces and lifting it on and off countertops to get a feel of the handles.

✔️ Drop durability : Each carry-on is filled with a standard weight and loaded onto our drop tester, which releases the luggage from a three-foot height. The test is repeated in various directions, with damages and imperfections noted and scored throughout.

✔️ Abrasion resistance : Swatches of fabric are cut from softside luggage and loaded into our abrasion machine which rubs the fabric over an abrasive material 15,000 times before being graded for signs of wear.

✔️ Scratch resistance : A wire is dragged over hardside luggage material, then analysts visually assess scuffs and marks left behind.

✔️ Water resistance : Water is poured over the zipper. The amount of water that seeps through is measured by weighing blotting paper before and after it catches the liquid.

✔️ Consumer tests : Each carry-on case is filled with weight to mimic a real load, and a standard course is set up to cover a variety of surfaces and obstacles like going through twists and turns, lifting over curbs, transitioning to different flooring and more. Consumer testers then wheel the luggage through the course and rate the luggage on factors like ease of using the handles, comfort when pulling, sturdiness, wheel performance and maneuverability.

What to look for when shopping for the best smart luggage brands

First and foremost, smart luggage needs to be high quality and durable, because no tech features will be helpful if your suitcase doesn't last. Additionally, look for features that match your preferences.

✔️ Portable charger: Some smart luggage includes a portable charger while others do not and just have a USB port. If you already have a portable charger you like, you can usually save a few bucks by choosing a style without one included. Our picks with portable chargers feature high-quality chargers that are great to use with the suitcase and without.

✔️ Softside vs. hardside: In GH testing, we have had top performers in both hardside and softside luggage. Based on feedback from testers, it comes down to personal preference. When shopping for hardside luggage, look for durable materials like 100% polycarbonate. Our pros recommend softside luggage made out of nylon or polyester if you want a more affordable option.

✔️ Wheels: For rolling luggage, our testers prefer four 360° wheels for easy maneuverability. Two-wheel luggage only lets you push it forward and back, while four wheels give you the flexibility to push in all directions.

✔️ Handles: When shopping, look at all the handles on the suitcase. Check how easy it is to lift the telescopic handle to different heights. Some styles put padding on the handles, which can make it much more comfortable to use after a long day of traveling. Look for styles with top and side handles to make it easy to put in an overhead bin.

✔️ Weight: Avoid bulky styles and stick with lightweight carry-ons that weigh less than 8 to 10 pounds when empty.

Do airlines allow smart luggage?

Yes, smart luggage is allowed on airplanes, but there are limitations that depend on the airline. Airlines do not want lithium-powered portable chargers in the cargo hold, so they ask that all portable chargers are removed from the suitcase before boarding and carried in hand. Even if you plan on carrying on your bag, you must remove that battery before boarding in case your suitcase gets checked at the gate. Because of this rule, smart luggage with a built-in charger or battery that is not removable may not be allowed on the plane. If you are using your own personal portable charger, check that it meets FAA and TSA regulations . Always check the specific luggage rules and size limitations from the airline before flying to ensure a smooth airport experience.

We've all been there: stuck waiting at the airport gate with nary an outlet in sight. With the proliferation of mobile boarding passes, a dead phone battery could pose a serious problem, not to mention the stress of finding alternative methods of entertaining yourself during the flight if there's no USB port at your seat.

That's where smart luggage comes in. Although smart luggage could mean any type of bag with technology that makes your travel experience more convenient, it most often refers to pieces with charging capabilities via a removable battery.

We narrowed down the best smart luggage from our extensive tests, including more than 450 suitcases, backpacks, duffels, and weekenders. During a process that lasted at least six months, we analyzed each bag's capacity, design, value, and durability, and we evaluated maneuverability, portability, and comfort, too. First we tested the bags in our New York City lab, where we recreated an airplane set, then we sent the bags out to test during our team's travels. Whether you're looking for a lightweight hardside bag, an expandable softside suitcase, or even a smart backpack, our list has an option for you.

Best Overall

July carry on.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Organization 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

It includes the power bank, rolls smoothly, and is available in a variety of colors and neutrals.

It’s spacious for a carry-on but doesn’t have an expander or many pockets.

While many of the bags on this list do not actually come with a power bank for charging, the July Carry-on does include an ejectable battery with a USB-C connector, so you don’t have to buy a separate one. The charging slot is located behind the integrated TSA lock and multi-stop telescopic handle, which you can conveniently adjust to 20 different heights. We found this 42-liter bag plenty spacious for a carry-on, although it doesn’t have an expander if you do need extra space. It does have a Y-Strap compression system on one side and a zippered mesh overlay on the other to keep clothing in place.

The carry-on was super easy to maneuver during testing — the handle was sturdy when we made sharp turns in our obstacle course, and the wheels glided smoothly from concrete pavers to carpet. It also held up well to our durability tests. There were a few scuffs after we threw it off tables and hit it with a baseball bat (and the charger did pop out at one point), but the outer shell didn’t dent at all, and the bag seems durable enough to stand up to lots of jostling during travel. We also love, as with other July luggage , the range of color options — from classy neutrals like sand and charcoal to stand-out shades like moss, plus limited-edition colors, too.

Best Hardside

Briggs & riley sympatico domestic carry-on expandable spinner 22-inch.

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 4 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

It's stylish yet extremely durable.

It's on the more expensive side, and its expander isn't the most intuitive to use.

If you're willing to splurge a little on a suitcase, this sleek piece is the one. Though it's expensive, this Briggs & Riley carry-on is one of the most durable bags our team has ever tested. Its polycarbonate shell didn't dent or scuff at all after several blows from a bat, and our tests estimate the bag could handle five to 10 years of regular use without issue. We also found the bag to maneuver well, particularly on two wheels. It had some minor troubles handling bumps on all four wheels, but we didn't find this particularly problematic.

As for its charging capabilities, it has a “Power Pocket” with a pass-through for a USB cable. There's no physical port on the bag, as you'd connect your device to the battery directly via a cable. The only major note is that, while this bag expands, it does so from the inside, which is a little counterintuitive. But still, we appreciate the function!

Best Softside

Travelpro crew versapack max carry-on spinner.

  • Maneuverability 4 /5

This carry-on has a ton of pockets and comes with a removable packing cube that you can zip onto the lid.

This is a large carry-on and may not fit in the overhead bin if you overpack it.

If you’re partial to softside luggage , the Travelpro Crew Versapack Max Carry-On Spinner’s smart features include a built-in USB port and an exterior power bank pocket (charger not included). What stood out most about this carry-on during testing was the sheer amount of pockets and organization extras, including an exterior laptop pocket and one of our favorite features we’ve ever seen in a suitcase: a compression packing cube that you can zip onto the lid of the case to keep it in place or detach from the bag to remove it as needed. The suitcase is short and stout but a bit front-heavy, which makes it easier to roll it on two wheels rather than four, and we wish the wheels were a little larger to make it more steady. It proved to be extremely durable after we threw it off a counter and hit it with a bat, and it was surprisingly spacious for a carry-on thanks to all of the pockets and the generous two-inch expander, but keep in mind that it may not fit in every overhead bin if you pack it completely full.

Best Zipperless

Arlo skye the frame carry-on max: aluminum edition.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Organization 4 /5
  • Maneuverability 3.5 /5
  • Durability 4 /5

Not only does this sleek bag come with a removable power bank, but it also includes an adapter and USB-C cable.

This is one of the most expensive option on this list, and aluminum frames will show dents over time.

If you’re looking for something stylish to turn some heads at the airport, this aluminum carry-on with hand-stitched leather handles will do the trick. Instead of zippers, the luggage closes with two TSA-approved clasp combination locks for more security. For that reason, you cannot overpack this bag because there’s no flexibility like there is with zippers. The discreet charging port is located under the handle, and the bag comes with a removable power bank that has both USB-C and A ports. Aluminum bags are typically heavier than other suitcases (this one is 10.5 pounds), and we felt like we had to use a little extra effort when rolling it over rough surfaces during testing. It’s also important to note that aluminum frame cases tend to dent easily in general, and this bag did dent when we hit it with a baseball bat, but it still felt durable and protected all of our packed items. We also hit the back of the bag right behind the handle and though the aluminum dented, it didn't damage the handle at all, and we were still able to pull the handle out seamlessly after. That being said, prepare for it to get dinged — it adds character.

Best Rolling Duffel

Samsonite weekend wheeled duffel.

Samsonite

  • Portability 5 /5

It has an almost shockingly sophisticated look for a duffel.

Using two wheels instead of four takes some getting used to.

This rolling duffel is a supremely versatile bag. For one thing, there are various ways to carry it: via a shoulder strap or two handles or rolling it on two wheels. Though wheels aren't always the primary method of movement for duffel bags, we found this bag to perform well in maneuverability tests just the same as its suitcase counterparts. The bag's look also makes it particularly versatile. The durable, matte black fabric is quite chic, so the duffel would work equally well as a gym bag and as a carry-on bag for a business trip.

The duffel also has impressive bonus features: a USB charging port and a wireless charging pocket, a padded laptop sleeve, a padded tablet sleeve, and a detachable wristlet. It's incredibly easy to stay organized with this duffel, despite it being fairly spacious for a weekender. But keep in mind that it is a weekender, not a suitcase, so its capacity is somewhat limited for longer journeys.

Best International Carry-on

Delsey chatelet air 2.0 carry-on spinner.

  • Design 3.5 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.5 /5
  • Durability 4.5 /5

It has an elegant look, and it's very lightweight compared to some other carry-ons.

There's no expander, so the capacity is quite limited.

International airlines often have smaller size requirements for carry-on bags, so if you find yourself flying an international airline regularly, you'll want to get a suitcase that complies. This Delsey suitcase, which has a USB-A port for charging, fits the bill. While we adored the chic exterior with its luggage trunk–inspired detailing, we did find the bag to be rather limited in capacity (which isn't too surprising given the airline size requirements!). The bag does, however, have quite a few internal pockets that help with organization. One shortcoming of the interior of the bag is that the compression straps are not adjustable, which renders them useless if you can't close them over your items, as was the case with our packing list. But we do appreciate the bag's maneuverability, particularly on carpet.

Best Underseat

Samsonite spinner underseater.

  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5

It's rather spacious for such a small bag.

It doesn't necessarily fit underneath all seats, especially if you overpack it.

Underseat rolling suitcases are a favorite of travelers who hate fighting for overhead bin space. If you don't mind giving up a little bit of legroom, it could be the right type of suitcase for you. This model comes with a USB-A charging port for flights, train trips, bus rides, or really any form of transportation where there's room. The one thing we'll note is that while this bag is super spacious — we were able to pack for a two-day trip in it — if you overstuff it, it might be difficult (or even impossible) to fit underneath a seat. You can, however, pair it with a larger carry-on, sliding the carry-on's handle through the underseater's sleeve. But when used alone, it's extremely easy to maneuver this suitcase, thanks to its four spinner wheels. We also found it was easy to roll over multiple surfaces, and it was able to tackle elevators, escalators, and stairs with ease.

Best Splurge

Tumi alpha international dual access carry-on.

Its dual-access function makes it easy to retrieve items from within the suitcase without opening it up all the way.

It's a heavier bag, weighing over 10 pounds.

Tumi has long been regarded as one of the top luxury suitcase brands , and it's a favorite of business travelers around the world. Perhaps that's why this suitcase comes with a garment bag with a capacity of one suit. This suitcase's standout feature is its dual accessibility — you can open just one part of the suitcase to grab any necessary items without opening the full suitcase. Because of that dual accessibility, we think this suitcase is best for those who can pack in an organized manner. If you use the smaller compartment, it eats into the space of the main compartment, so there's a bit of planning necessary to pack all your items conveniently. Still, we found this bag rather spacious — albeit somewhat heavy, thanks in part due to Tumi's extra-durable ballistic nylon material. For charging purposes, there's an exterior USB-A port that connects to an inner pocket that can hold a portable power bank.

The Details: 10.7 pounds | 22 x 14 x 9 inches | 35-liter capacity | Battery not included

Delsey Paris Cruise 3.0 Carry-on Spinner

Delsey Paris

It's spacious, lightweight, and incredibly stylish.

It lacks organizational features.

If you're in the market for a reasonably priced carry-on suitcase with a sleek, contemporary look, this Delsey bag is the one for you. Though we first thought the lightweight polycarbonate shell would be rather flimsy, it held up surprisingly well during durability tests, so don't let that initial impression dissuade you from this suitcase. The bag has an expander, but we didn't find it necessary to use for our packing list as there was of plenty of room to pack everything for a long weekend stay in the suitcase. One thing to note, however, is that there isn't much inside the bag in terms of organization, so things can get messy fast without packing cubes . However, once you get everything inside the bag, it's easy to maneuver it across all types of terrain. And when you need to charge your phone, there's a USB-A port that can connect to a portable charger inside the bag.

The Details: 7.4 pounds | 15 x 10 x 22.75 inches | 45-liter capacity | Battery not included

Best Backpack

Bee & kin the midi nomad backpack.

Bee & Kin

  • Comfort 4.5 /5
  • Durability 4.8 /5
  • Value 4.8 /5

This sleek leather bag is easy to carry and is one of the most lightweight options on this list.

It could use more internal organization.

With a very petite profile, this chic leather backpack is the perfect go-to for a personal item on a flight or as a work bag. It has a laptop pocket large enough to fit a 13-inch device, but note that that pocket isn't padded, so you'll want to be careful toting around any expensive hardware. (If you have a larger laptop, there is a larger version of this bag that can fit a 16-inch device.) While the leather adds a certain sophistication to this bag, the material is heavier than nylon, which is something to consider. Still, we found the bag to be very lightweight overall, weighing under three pounds. As for its smart features, there's no USB port, but there is a wireless charging pocket — which is, of course, only useful if you have a compatible phone. The wireless charger is sold separately by Bee & Kin.

Other Smart Luggage We Liked

We found a few more smart bags that didn't make the cut for various reasons, but are still worth considering.

Tumi Continental Expandable 4 Wheeled Carry-on : While we loved this bag for its spacious, well-organized interiors and easy maneuverability, it's a bit wide for standard carry-on sizing.

Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential Carry-on Spinner : This bag received high marks during testing for its deep main compartment and sturdy construction, but we found its wheels to be slightly stiff, impacting the suitcase's ease of movement.

Matein Travel Backpack : With a 40-liter capacity, there's room for everything in this backpack. But we found the material to feel a little cheap, despite it performing well.

We began our evaluations in our Travel + Leisure lab with an external and internal inspection of each piece of luggage or bag, reviewing features like hardware, storage, and compression straps. Then we packed each bag to capacity, evaluating its organization and spaciousness. Next up were the physical tests to see how each bag works in action. We pushed and pulled rolling suitcases on various surfaces like carpet and concrete pavers and rolled them through our obstacle course to check maneuverability, while we carried backpacks and weekenders to test their weight distribution across the body. We also tested carry-on suitcases on the T+L airplane set to see how it felt to lift them into real overhead bins, roll them down aisles, and place them underneath airplane seats.

All bags were also evaluated for durability, with our T+L editors pushing the bags off counters multiple times and hitting them with baseball bats to see how easily they scuffed or dented. After this first round of testing, we sent the winning bags out into the real world, where our editors will continue to test them while traveling over a period of six months. We will update the results with our findings.

Tips for Buying Smart Luggage with Removable Batteries

Look at the inputs and outputs.

Most smart luggage has a pocket for your battery with a cord in it — that cord threads through the suitcase, connecting your battery to the charging port. The port is where you'll plug in your charging cord for your device. You'll need to make sure your battery and your cord are compatible with the input and outputs on their respective ends of the system, whether that's a USB, USB-C, or something else entirely. Otherwise, you'll need to buy an adapter.

Consider the accessibility of the port and battery

Smart luggage is all about making your life easier, so make sure that your charging port is in a convenient spot — one that's accessible when you're carrying the bag or when it's sitting next to you on the ground. If the battery or charger is difficult to reach or requires you rifling through the bag to unzip multiple compartments, it's not going to make your life easier.

Shop for a compatible battery, if not included

Because most pieces of smart luggage do not come with an external battery (though some do!), you'll want to make sure that the one you plan to use is compatible with the bag. Make sure it is the correct size to fit in the pocket, and make sure you have the right port or adapter as mentioned above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Smart luggage is any travel bag that includes some form of technology that makes your life easier. Most commonly, smart luggage includes charging capabilities, often through a USB port that connects to a removable lithium-ion battery. Those batteries are usually not sold with the bags, but sometimes they are included, so make sure to read the product description carefully. Some smart luggage has additional technology, like built-in GPS trackers.

This varies per device. Typically, you plug the battery into an internal cord that weaves through the bag. That ends in a port elsewhere in the bag. Then you plug in your charging cable to that port. Keep in mind that some bags have USB-A ports, while others have USB-C ports, so it's possible you might need to buy a converter to make your bag and portable battery compatible.

While you're not allowed to leave a battery in a checked bag , you can usually bring one in your carry-on suitcase throughout the airport process. The reasoning behind this is that lithium-ion batteries have been known to explode if they're damaged. It's far easier to extinguish a fire in the cabin of an aircraft versus its cargo hold. And, on that note, if you think your portable battery is damaged, don't bring it on a plane!

As stated above, you are permitted to bring portable batteries into the cabin on planes but cannot check them into the cargo hold. Some airlines will ask you to take out the portable battery if you plan on putting your bag in the overhead bin as well. In some cases, you may also be asked to remove it during security screening, but this is not very common — it's up to your specific security agent. And, since you are not allowed to check lithium-ion batteries, if you gate-check your bag, you'll have to take it out and carry it with you.

Right now, you'll get the best deal on the carry-on in the shade purple.

"I was able to fit a lot more than I thought in this little suitcase," shared one Amazon reviewer . "It's easy to maneuver and even with the extension added to it it's small enough to fit airplanes' carry-on requirements."

Why we like the Rockland Melbourne 20-inch carry-on:

  • The carry-on meets size restrictions for most major airlines, including United, American, Delta, Southwest and Allegiant.
  • It earned a 4.6-star rating with over 1,800 reviews.
  • The ergonomic handle and seamless spinner wheels make it easy to maneuver.
  • The best carry-on luggage

The main thing to keep in mind when shopping for luggage? Size. While carry-on luggage may vary in dimensions and shape, make sure to select a bag that is no larger than 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches, including handle and wheels. That's the standard carry-on size for most domestic airlines. If you're not sure that your carry-on will make the cut, you should check your airline's size restrictions before your flight.

We selected 7 great carry-on bags that fit in the overhead bin or under your seat. All of our top picks are functional, aesthetically pleasing and come with with great features.

14 best travel carriers for dogs, according to editor reviews

The size, material and safety certifications can all determine which travel carrier is right for your dog.

We’re celebrating National Pet Week at NBC Select by sharing our favorite pet products. Shop puppy supplies , kitten essentials and more on our pets homepage .

We all want our dogs by our side as much as possible, and that might include them tagging along on vacations and holiday trips. But traveling with a pet usually involves a range of safety considerations, including gathering the right health paperwork , keeping treats and water on hand and making sure they’re comfortable. Since most airlines and other transportation methods will require taking your dog in some kind of enclosure, the pet carrier you choose is crucial in keeping your dog safe and comfortable.

We spoke to veterinarians, vet technicians and travel safety experts about what to look for in a travel carrier for your dog and how to shop for one that’ll keep them safe. We also compiled a list of carriers either tested by NBC Select staff or recommended by our experts to consider.

How we picked the best dog travel carriers

When shopping for the best travel carrier for your dog, our experts recommend considering the following factors:

  • Size: Pick a carrier that’s big enough for your pet to comfortably stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. The carrier should be as long as the tip of the dog’s nose to the base of the tail, says veterinarian Dr. Kristen L. Nelson . Carriers will usually come in a variety of sizes to fit different breed types (though keep in mind that airline-approved carriers have very specific dimension requirements that will usually only fit small dogs under 20 pounds, according to our experts).
  • Materials and build: Carriers are usually soft-sided and made of polyester or nylon, which are easy to clean and water- and tear-resistant, according to our experts. Choose one with mesh sides to provide a good amount of ventilation. Most importantly, you should opt for a carrier that can stand up on its own and not collapse around your pet or deform easily, says Dr. Christina Carlo , a veterinarian and medical director at VCA Avondale Veterinary Hospital. Hard plastic carriers are usually designed for airplane cargo holds, but they’re a safe and durable option for car rides, too, says Carlo.
  • Airline requirements: Commercial airlines will usually have certain dimension requirements for carriers that go in the plane’s cabin (with the passenger) and crates that travel in the cargo area of the plane. Most airlines like United Airlines , Jetblue and American Airlines have varying dimension requirements, so be sure to visit their site before traveling.
  • Crash testing: Look for carriers and crates that have undergone independent crash testing by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS), which gives your pet the best possible chance of survival if a crash occurs, says Dr. Wendy Hauser , a veterinarian and special advisor to ASPCA Pet Health Insurance.

Best dog travel carriers of 2024

Below are the best dog travel carriers based on experts’ guidance and NBC Select staff experience. We also include top-rated options and key factors to consider, including the carrier’s material, weight capacity and dimensions.

Best overall travel carrier: Away The Pet Carrier

Away Pet Carrier

Away Pet Carrier

  • CPS certified
  • Mesh sides and top
  • Removable and washable bedding
  • Recommended for smaller dogs

This Away travel carrier, an NBC Select Pet Award for best overall travel carrier, is designed for both car and airline travel. It has zip openings on the top and front with see-through mesh to help your pet see out of the carrier (if you prefer to avoid this, there’s a piece of fabric that rolls down to cover their view).

Dog sitting in blue travel carrier

I use this carrier to fly with my 16-pound havanese and bichon frise mix, Bella, because it’s sturdy and makes her feel safe and supported thanks to its durable nylon and leather construction. The mesh gives her enough visibility to know what’s going on outside and helps me keep tabs on her, too. It also comes with machine-washable bedding on the inside that’s soft to the touch, and multiple pockets that keep my belongings and pet essentials accessible during the whole flight. If you’re traveling by car, the carrier has latches on one side that securely fasten to a car’s seat belt system. The Away carrier comes in black and blue colors and you can also personalize it with your initials for an additional $35.

Pet weight: Up to 18 lbs | Dimensions (LxWxH): 18.7 x 10.8 x 10.75 in. | Material: Water-resistant nylon

Best airline-approved carrier: Sherpa Pet Carrier

Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier

Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier

  • More affordable option
  • Very well ventilated
  • Removable and washable liner
  • Recommended for smaller pets

Another NBC Select Pet Awards winner, this Sherpa carrier is a favorite of CPS founder Lindsey Wolko, who has used it for years to travel with her own pets. She specifically recommends it for air travel because it fits under the passenger seat (it meets the dimensions for most airlines, but always check your specific airline’s requirements before traveling) and has a large zip pocket to store pet supplies like water bowls, leashes and treats. However, it’s not the best pick for car travel because you can’t strap it in using your vehicle’s seat belt system — you’re better off placing it on the floor behind the driver’s seat for safety and to avoid the stitching or zippers to fail, says Wolko.

Cavalier King Charles spaniel dog sitting in black travel carrier

NBC Select manager of editorial operations Shari Uyehara uses this carrier to fly with her 20-pound cavalier King Charles spaniel, Loki, and says it’s a great affordable option. Loki can comfortably shift positions during the flight, and the carrier itself is structured enough to maintain its shape while under the seat, says Uyehara. The sides are made of see-through mesh that allows your pet to easily see out of it. Available in medium and large sizes, the carrier also has shorter top handles and a longer shoulder strap to fit your carrying preferences.

Pet weight: Up to 16 lbs | Dimensions: 17 x 11 x 10.5 in. (medium size) | Material: Polyester and mesh

Best hard-sided carrier: Gunner Kennel G1

Gunner Kennel G1

Gunner Kennel G1

  • Can't be used as carry-on

This crate earned a 5-star safety rating from the CPS in both the crate and carrier class (the only product to earn a dual certification), and it’s a favorite among our experts. The crate has a thick exterior layer for impact protection, which keeps your pet safe if there’s a crash or a fall, according to the brand. Its reversible door design with an aluminum frame lets you open the crate from either side, and won’t pop open in the middle of a flight, according to the brand. It comes in four sizes — small, medium, intermediate and large — and Gunner offers a size guide that gives recommendations based on your dog’s weight and length.

Pet weight: Up to 30 lbs for small, up to 45 lbs for medium, up to 75 lbs for intermediate and up to 110 lbs for large size | Dimensions: 24.5 x 18.625 x 19 in. (small), 29.5 x 20.5 x 23.5 in. (medium), 34 x 23 x 28.5 in. (intermediate), 40.25 x 28 x 33.25 in. (large) | Material: Reinforced aluminum frame

EliteField Soft-Sided Dog & Cat Carrier Bag

At just over two pounds, this is the most lightweight soft-sided pet carrier on our list. It also comes with removable and machine-washable bedding and has a back sleeve that attaches to your suitcase, as well as loops that latch onto your car’s seat belt system. The polyester and synthetic build is water-resistant and available in six colors to fit your personal style.

Best tote carrier: Wild One Everyday Carrier

Wild One Everyday Carrier

Wild One Everyday Carrier

  • Remains open

If you’re looking for a tote to carry your dog around town or on the train, consider this Wild One carrier. This NBC Select staff-favorite option has a small dip in its design, which allows your dog to peek their head out while you carry them around. “I love that Loki’s weight remains balanced in the carrier, but he still has room to move around,” says Uyehara, who appreciates its stability. It also includes a safety clip that attaches to your dog’s harness, ensuring they won’t jump out at a bad time, according to Karwacki (but be sure to never connect this clip to their collar since it poses a choking hazard). It also comes with carrying straps of two different lengths — one for carrying it like a shoulder bag, and shorter straps to carry it by hand. There is a machine-washable mat on the inside and three exterior pockets to hold all your pet’s essentials like bags, treats and toys.

Pet weight: Up to 20 lbs | Dimensions: 21.5 x 7.5 x 14.25 in. | Material: Recycled polyester outer, cotton interior

An NBC Select Pet Awards winner, the small version of this Roverlund carrier is an airline-approved option for both dogs and cats because it’s less than 18 inches long. The straps are all ropes, which our staff found to be more comfortable and supportive than other carrier straps made from typical polyester or fabric. The interior lining is machine-washable and you can also shop the larger version of this carrier for dogs up to 25 pounds.

It has mesh panels on all sides to let your pet see out and comes with removable fleece bedding to keep them comfortable while creating a sturdy base that can hold their weight, according to Apollo. It also comes with a clip that attaches to your pet’s harness to prevent them from escaping or falling out.

Best expandable carrier: Midwest Duffy Dog & Cat Carrier

MidWest Duffy Dog & Cat Carrier

MidWest Duffy Dog & Cat Carrier

  • Not as ventilated as others

This Midwest Duffy carrier comes recommended by Karwacki because it’s expandable — the mesh sides open up to give your pet more room to move around and stretch their legs. It has two zippered side openings, as well as one on top to make taking your dog in and out easier, according to the brand. It also folds completely flat, so you can store it away when it’s not in use. It comes in three colors and sizes small, medium and large.

Pet weight: Up to 15 lbs | Dimensions: 16.3 x 10.1 x 9.3 in. (small), 18.3 x 11.3 x 11.1 in. (medium) and 19.3 x 12.2 x 12.2 in. (large) | Material: Polyester

Best for small dogs: Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

The Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed is an expert-recommended and CPS-certified option that has breathable mesh and a machine-washable interior — it’s built for plane travel for dogs under 15 pounds. Nelson recommends the Sleepypod because it’s easy to carry and gives the pet privacy while traveling since it’s fully enclosed with a mesh panel at the top.

Like several other carriers on this list, the Sleepypod isn’t limited to airline travel: It straps into a vehicle’s seat belt system, so you can comfortably take road trips with your pet. You can also separate the bottom of the carrier to transform it into a bed for your pet, which makes training easier since they can form a positive association with it, says Wolko. The brand’s Sleepypod Atom is another CPS-certified carrier that’s crash-tested for even smaller dogs up to 12 pounds, the lowest weight requirement on this list.

Pet weight: Up to 15 lbs | Dimensions: 17 in. (D) x 6.5 in. | Material: Polyester

Molly and Stitch Alpine Dog Carrier

The brand’s Passenger Travel Carrier is great for both plane and car travel: It fits many airlines’ size requirements, and it has custom seat belt clips and a buckle strap to place it safely in your car. It also comes with a Diggs Pee Pad that attaches to the included bed — if your dog chooses to use it, you can open the side panel to swap it out without disrupting your pup, according to the brand.

Designed for small dogs up to 10 pounds, this sling carrier crosses over your body so you can take your dog around town hands-free. The base has a built-in drawstring that adjusts the size of the opening to fit different sized dogs, and the crossbody strap length is also adjustable to fit your comfort level. The carrier includes a safety buckle inside that connects to your dog’s harness to prevent them from falling out, according to the brand. I purchased this carrier for my dog Bella when she was a puppy, and I was able to comfortably carry her around when she got tired of walking. It held her weight well without tearing or damaging the fabric, and the crossbody strap caused less strain on my back.

Pet weight: Up to 10 lbs | Dimensions: 9 x 6 x 3 in. | Material: Polyester

How to shop for a dog travel carrier

Carriers and crates are the most secure type of enclosure when traveling with your dog because they prevent them from escaping and minimize distraction while you’re traveling (especially while driving), says Wolko. But the right carrier for your dog will depend on what type of trip you’re taking, your method of transportation and their temperament.

When shopping for the right carrier for your dog, our experts recommend considering the size and fit of the enclosure, whether it’s crash-tested, if it meets airline requirements and more.

Your dog or cat should be able to easily stand up, turn around and lay comfortably in their carrier. That means the length of your carrier from front to back should measure about the same, or one or two inches more than the tip of your dog’s nose to the base of their tail, says Nelson. You should add a few more inches for brachycephalic breeds like pugs, pekingese and French bulldogs, though experts don’t recommend taking these breeds on flights because their shorter noses increase the risk of overheating and oxygen deprivation, says Nelson (some airlines even ban this breed from flying in the cargo hold , according to the American Veterinary Medical Association). To determine the right height of your carrier, make sure it measures the same or larger than the height of your pet from the floor to the top of their shoulders, says Carlo.

Place a mat or bed in the carrier to make the space more comfortable for your pet, says Carlo (though you should avoid this if your dog usually destroys their bedding because they might eat the pieces and cause intestinal obstruction). Putting soft blankets or their favorite toy in the carrier can also help them feel familiar and safe, according to our experts.

Whether your dog can see out of their carrier is a matter of personal preference, though our experts recommend mesh so the outside is visible, which prevents your dog from feeling threatened or confused while they’re traveling, says Wolko.

Materials and structure

Most carriers are soft-sided and made from materials like polyester, mesh and nylon fabric. Consider whether the carrier has structure, meaning it can stand up on its own and won’t automatically collapse around your pet, according to Carlo. You should also look for carriers that have pockets, so you have room for your pet supplies.

You can take a hard-sided, non-collapsible crate or kennel on an airplane, but they must be able to fit under the passenger’s seat, according to Hauser (this might be harder to do compared to soft-sided carriers since they don’t mold to a different size). Plastic hard-sided crates are usually good for transporting your pet in an airplane cargo hold and the cargo area of a car — they’re considered to be the safest option since they won’t lose their shape and provide impact protection in case of a crash, turbulence or hard fall, according to our experts. However, you should avoid metal wire crates because pets might be able to stick their feet or limbs out, which can be a safety hazard while traveling, says Karwacki.

Safety considerations

For car travel, look for carriers and crates that have undergone crash testing by the Center for Pet Safety, a registered nonprofit and advocacy organization that crash tests car restraints and containment devices. This provides an extra layer of safety when traveling with your pet, our experts say.

“Most carriers on the market only prevent distractions [for the driver], which is important, but in a crash, they may not perform as you would expect them to,” says Wolko. The CPS certification tests carriers as an unaffiliated third party. This is important when considering that many brands subjectively “pass” their carriers if they test them in their own labs, which can ultimately give pet owners a false sense of security, according to Wolko.

Though the CPS does not specifically test carriers and crates for airline travel, you can use most carriers that meet the airline’s size requirements and have ample ventilation, according to Wolko.

A CPS-certified crate usually has backup door latches and locking mechanisms to prevent your pet from escaping, which is especially useful if they travel in the aircraft’s cargo hold. “So, if something tumbles, the kennel is so robust that the pet is not getting out,” says Wolko. Most airlines have certain regulations for what carriers to use when transporting an animal in the cargo area of a plane. The International Air Transport Association, a globally recognized trade association for the world’s airlines, details specific requirements for crates to transport animals in the cargo hold, including construction and adequate ventilation (more on that below).

Frequently Asked Questions

For air travel, always check with your airline to see what type and size of carrier it allows. The approved dimensions of your carrier vary from airline to airline but, in most cases, carriers can’t exceed 11 inches in height, which allows it to fit under the seat in front of the passenger, according to Hauser. Also, the carrier will likely count as your carry-on luggage on most airlines, and in-cabin travel will usually require you to make a reservation or reserve a seat specifically for your dog.

Certain airlines might also have specific pet size and weight requirements for in-cabin travel. Typically, pets must weigh 20 pounds or less, though this varies by airline, and most larger dogs can’t ride in-cabin unless they’re a trained service animal, says Wolko. If your pet exceeds that limit, they’ll need to travel in the cargo area of the plane.

Most airlines will allow trained service dogs on board at no cost. However, some airlines like Delta Air Lines, Southwest, American Airlines and Alaska Air are no longer accepting emotional support animals on board.

Carriers and crates for dogs are usually used interchangeably, but there are a few key differences. The CPS defines crates as enclosures that are secured in the cargo area of a plane or tethered securely to the floor of a vehicle like a van or SUV. They’re usually constructed of thick molded plastic or metal and designed for larger dogs, according to our experts.

Carriers, on the other hand, are usually designed for smaller dogs and made of a soft-sided fabric (though some are constructed of a harder plastic or nylon to prevent them from collapsing on your pet). When traveling in a car, the carrier usually goes in the backseat and is strapped in using the seatbelt system of your vehicle.

Yes, it is generally safe and common to travel with your dog in the cargo hold (also known as the lower deck) of an airplane, which also holds baggage. However, experts recommend only flying your pet in the cargo hold when it’s absolutely necessary because it can be a very stressful experience for them.

“There’s a lot of weird noises, not much light down there — it’d be scary for anyone to go in the [cargo hold], ” says Karwacki. And, most handling risks come before they even board the plane: Dogs usually endure the most force when being transported across the rough, uneven tarmac to get to the plane, says Wolko.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) lists specific requirements for crates, including construction and ventilation, to keep your pet safe when flying in the cargo hold. For example, the trade association specifies that crates must be sturdy and inescapable and adequately ventilated on three sides, with the majority of the ventilation being provided on the upper part of the container.

Most aircraft cargo holds are temperature-controlled and pressurized, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture . Animals can’t be exposed to temperatures above 85 degrees Fahrenheit or below 45 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 4 hours, per the USDA’s website. Most airlines won’t transport dogs altogether if ground temperatures reach those extremes.

How to help your dog feel calm in a travel carrier

Your pet’s comfort level in their carrier can determine how smooth your travels are. Below, we list a few expert tips about how to get your dog adjusted to their carrier and how to keep them comfortable during long trips.

  • Know your dog’s safety and security preferences. Some dogs prefer more open-sided kennels with better airflow and visibility, while others feel safer with the cave-like security of a molded plastic carrier with smaller windows, says Hauser.
  • Make the carrier or crate their “happy spot.” Allowing your pet to build a positive association with their carrier helps them feel calm and safe while traveling, according to our experts. In your home and before traveling, leave the door open so that your pup can explore the enclosure on their own terms, which demystifies it, says Hauser. After some time, it isn’t uncommon to find pets that preferentially sleep in their enclosures,” she says. Once they get acclimated to the crate or carrier at home, you can then graduate to car trips and, later on, plane rides. Start off with brief trips that increase in duration over time.
  • Make the carrier feel familiar. As we mentioned, putting their favorite bed, blankets or toys in the carrier can help make them feel more comfortable.
  • Avoid any safety risks while on the plane. For example, if you’re traveling with your pet in-cabin, never put the carrier in the overhead compartment of the plane with your pet inside because it poses a suffocation risk, says Wolko. Also, feed your pet before you get on the plane — if they choke or get something lodged in their throat while you’re in the air, they likely won’t get help in time, according to Wolko.

What Nick Viall Can’t Live Without

away travel luggage with charger

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts — like their hair spray and electric toothbrush. We asked TV personality and podcast host Nick Viall, who recently partnered with Patrón El Alto , about the outdoor pizza oven , breakup movie, and at-home weights he can’t live without.

Baby Big Ass Candle

Everyone loves a good candle. These are just nice to have around the house. I just like the way they smell. Even when they’re not lit, they actually give off a nice scent. I think that’s the making of a high-quality candle . To be totally honest, I really lean on my wife Natalie for the scents. She has a better palate for that than me. This was more her input. If she’s happy, I’m happy when it comes to how our house smells.

Wild One Walk Kit

If you have dogs, this is a must-have. Our two Labradoodles have a tendency to yank us on walks if we put the leash on their collar. This helps them walk a lot better when they’re on leash. It takes away that sensation to pull. I also find that the rubber leash is more durable. It’s a pretty simple product, but we’ve gone through a lot of different leashes, and this one works for us.

Ergobaby Evolve 3-in-1 Bouncer

We hold our baby, River, a lot. She’s usually in our arms, but every once in a while, we need to set her down. This is something we find to be safe and something she enjoys. We can just set her down to get some house chores done, like washing dishes. We’ve been lucky enough to try different products out, and she seems to really like this. It keeps her entertained and comfortable.

Away Bigger Carry-On

I’ve been an Away customer for many years now. It’s a great suitcase . I think they give you a lifetime warranty even though you don’t really need it, because it’s incredibly durable. It’s amazing how brand-new my probably four-year-old luggage still looks. It’s very convenient. It’s easy to pack and has a lot of space. It’s incredibly easy to roll, because of its 360 spin wheels. And if we ever have an extra bag, we can set it on top of the suitcase easily. All our luggage is from Away.

All In Motion Weighted Jump Rope Black

I try to stay active and work out. Jumping rope is an exercise I think people forget about. It’s fun and easy to travel with, especially when I’m on the road. Not every hotel I stay in has a gym or a gym that I want to use, so it’s just a great, easy way to get cardio in when I’m on the go. It’s also a different type of exercise you don’t normally get with the plyometrics. And the weighted handles add a little extra to it, too.

Amazon Basics Neoprene Workout Dumbbell

I don’t take these on the road. Natalie and I use these at home . Obviously, they’re lighter weights, but as I’ve gotten older, just staying active has gotten more important to me, even if it’s a few reps or exercises throughout the day. These dumbbells are just perfect for just a little bit of weight resistance — nothing too heavy. And they’re something everyone can use. Natalie’s mom actually uses them a lot, too. (She’s in town and has been very helpful with the baby.) She’s constantly using them, and she’s not a big gym person. She’s always doing these arm exercises, so they’ve been a nice thing to have around.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall DVD

One of the greatest movies of all time. It’s an excellent breakup movie. It’s rewatchable. It’s one of my go-tos, especially for anyone getting out of a breakup. And if you’re not going through a breakup, it’s just a good time. We actually stayed at the hotel where the movie was filmed last year for Natalie’s cousin’s wedding.

Breville The Café Roma

I’m a big coffee drinker. I can never have too much. I love a nice little espresso after dinner. This is very easy to use, and I’m not paying the high prices from going to the coffee shop every day. I’m more of an espresso-shot person, but my wife Natalie’s more into lattes.

Williams Sonoma DIY Sushi Kit

I’m a big cook. As I’ve gotten older, I like to try cooking new foods. Sushi is something I just started dabbling in. I’ve tried making your basic hand roll with rice and salmon. I’ve also done yellowtail and tuna. I’m not very good at it, but this kit was a great place to start. It makes it a bit more approachable. It’s very much a work in progress for me.

Ooni Koda Gas-Powered Outdoor Pizza Oven

I stand by my homemade pizza. It’s restaurant quality. Natalie and I make pizza at least once a week usually. I used to make it in the oven, which works, but I really enjoy the pizza oven . It’s nice to have outside because sometimes the cheese will melt and drip in the oven and it starts to smoke a little bit. Using this makes the crust better and the pizza a little more flaky. It also makes you feel like you’re a little more authentic with your pizza making. It’s also really simple to use. You just put a propane tank on it, pop it in, easy to turn on, easy to turn off. I love it. I use it all the time.

Patrón El Alto

I like to enjoy the alcohol I drink. I’m not a big shot person. I don’t drink in excess. I drink my liquor either neat or on the rocks, so I like to drink high-quality stuff. Patrón El Alto is that. It’s smooth, sweet. It’s something you can actually sip. You don’t have to add anything to it to enjoy it. That’s what I love most about it. It’s truly what got me into tequila. Also, it makes a great gift. Obviously, any type of spirit is a great gift, but this has a luxury feel to it. Anytime I go to a house party, it’s a go-to gift.

Best TSA-approved locking luggage in 2024

I f you've been using the same bag for years, investing in a great piece (or set) of luggage can upgrade your travel experience. Like the selection of bags we'll show you below, many of the best luggage in 2024 comes equipped with TSA-approved locks.

Why select a piece of luggage with a TSA-approved lock? As the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) explains , if its officers need to inspect your locked, carry-on or  checked luggage , a TSA-approved lock may save you from having your lock cut off. That's because a TSA-approved lock can be opened by TSA officers with a universal master key.

While TSA-approved locks can be purchased and placed on luggage you already own, many newer luggage pieces incorporate them into their design. We've rounded up some of the best luggage pieces with TSA-approved locks. Some of these easy-to-transport bags also offer useful tech features, such as USB outlets and charging ports.

The best TSA-approved locking luggage

Take a look at our picks for the best TSA-approved locking luggage in 2024.

Best soft-sided luggage with a TSA-approved lock: Travelpro Platinum Elite spinner

Best customizable luggage with tsa-approved locks: roam luggage.

  • Best TSA-approved luggage with locking pockets : Victorinox Spectra 3.0 luggage

Best eco-friendly luggage with TSA-approved locks: Paravel Aviator

  • Best budget luggage with TSA-approved locks : Samsonite Omni luggage
  • Best TSA-approved locking luggage for international travel: Delsey Paris Chatelet

Learn more about each of our selections below.

Available in three carry-on and two checked sizes, and a variety of colors, the Travelpro Platinum Elite spinner offers a great value at a moderate price point.

The stain-resistant-fabric bag (with leather accents) features a TSA-approved lock, an internal tie-down system, integrated accessory products and a removable, TSA-compliant wet pocket for toiletries. It's rated 4.7 stars (out of 5) on Amazon.

Why we like the Travelpro Platinum Elite:

  • Travelpro offers a lifetime warranty.
  • The TSA-approved lock keeps your belongings secure.
  • Reviewers praise the bag's durability.

Roam allows you to customize your own bespoke suitcase. Start by choosing from one of eight sizes, ranging from a 37-liter capacity carry-on ($450) to a 121-liter large expandable check-in ($675). Then select your colors.

Not feeling creative? You can choose from pre-designed bags, too.

Each Roam luggage piece comes with a TSA-approved lock, so you can keep your belongings secure while traveling with your customized bag.

Why we like Roam luggage:

  • You can heavily customize the suitcase and choose your favorite colors.
  • Roam suitcases come with a lifetime warranty.
  • Roam luggage comes with a 100-day trial period and a lifetime guarantee.

Best TSA-approved luggage with locking pockets: Victorinox Spectra 3.0 luggage carry-on

The sleek Victorinox Spectra 3.0 is constructed out of Sorplas, a recycled polycarbonate sourced from plastic bottles. The carry-on is a great option for frequent fliers. You can also get the Spectra 3.0 in a medium checked bag or large checked bag.

It offers a lockable section (to secure belongings in case your bag gets left behind), and also an expansion system. The bag boasts ample space for your belongings and TSA-approved locks.

Why we like the Victorinox Spectra 3.0:

  • It expands by up to 20% for extra storage space,
  • It offers a lockable quick-access front pocket.
  • The carry-on has a dual-tube telescopic handle for easy maneuvering.

It's all in the details with this chic, carbon-neutral carry-on. Paravel makes its Aviator bag in three sizes: two carry-on options, and a larger check-in. Frictionless, carbon-steel-bearing wheels offer 360-degree movement, while a telescopic handle makes walking (or running) through the airport a breeze.

To customize your travel look, don't forget to order a monogrammed cabana tote or cabana bundle. The latter features a monogrammed luggage tag, card case and passport case.

Why we like the Paravel Aviator carry-on:

  • The carry-on is carbon neutral and made with recycled materials.
  • Reviewers state that it is easy to maneuver.
  • It features a scuff-hiding textured finish.

Best budget luggage with TSA-approved locks: Samsonite Omni luggage

The Samsonite Omni, another polycarbonate suitcase option, offers high quality at a reasonable price point. Features include TSA-approved, side-mounted locks, multidirectional spinner wheels, an interior mesh divider and cross straps. You also have the option of purchasing the bag as part of a two- or three-piece set.

Why we like the Samsonite Omni:

  • This is one of the best-selling and well-reviewed suitcases on Amazon.
  • It's a premium luggage option available for a more affordable price.
  • Comes in a wide range of color options to fit your tastes.

Best TSA-approved locking luggage for international travel: Delsey Paris Chatelet

With faux-leather accents and rounded edges, the Delsey Paris Chatelet makes for an aesthetic international travel companion. The lightweight polycarbonate model is durable, and features multidirectional double-spinner wheels, a USB charging port and an ergonomic handle.

The suitcase also comes equipped with laundry and shoe bags, as well as mesh-zippered pockets. Its TSA-approved lock is recessed.

Why we like the Delsey Paris Chatelet:

  • The carry-on's polycarbonate shell is lightweight and resistant to cracking.
  • An odor-resistant lining helps keep the suitcase from absorbing smells when traveling home with dirty clothes.
  • Reviewers praise the carry-on's smooth wheels and easy maneuverability.

Rimowa's aluminum suitcases have been in the hands of international jet-setters for nearly 100 years. The Rimowa Original Cabin features 360-degree spinner wheels, TSA-approved locks and a telescopic handle that easily glides up and down. Available in black, silver and titanium colors.

You can find Rimowa Original luggage in a carry-on (price shown below), a medium checked bag ($1,650),  a large checked bag ($1,800), a trunk ($1,975) and more.

Why we like the Rimowa Original Cabin carry-on:

  • Its aluminum construction protects your belongings much better than soft-sided or polycarbonate luggage.
  • This suitcase comes with a lifetime warranty,
  • Its sleek metallic material gives this carry-on a trendy, high-end look.
  • Available in four colors.

The Away Bigger Carry-On polycarbonate bag features a removable, rechargeable battery (for on-the-go phone charging), an easy-to-set, TSA-approved lock and smooth-rolling spinner wheels.

If you don't like your Away bag, return it within 100 days for a full refund. It also comes with a lifetime guarantee for defects.

Why we like the Away The Bigger carry-on:

  • The included, removable charger ensures you'll be able to recharge your phone on the go, even when you can't find an outlet.
  • The compression panel can help you fit more clothing into this suitcase when packing.
  • It comes with a lifetime warranty.

Away also offers upgraded aluminum editions that are stylistically on par with the James Bond-worthy suitcases sold by Rimowa. The aluminum edition luggage also includes TSA-approved locks.

The buildings of all three railway stations themselves are historical value.

Leningradsky railway terminal is the oldest of Moscow's nine railway stations .

As for nothing to peruse, I would say without a really good guide book, or being part of some guided tour group, simply wandering around likely will not do much for you. I have gone on some very nice ones IN RUSSIAN by a group I do some work with, but, they only offer Russian-language tours, and these are per their schedule. Too bad, because the area does indeed have a lot of history.

Department of Transportation’s changes hope to ease travel burdens

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - The Department of Transportation is making some new rules they hope will hold airlines more accountable.

More than 212 million Americans plan to take a summer vacation this year, according to travel experts at The Vacationer.

Half of those travelers will head to the airport before stepping on sandy beaches.

From canceled flights to lost luggage, countless travelers have experienced a travel horror story.

Aviation analyst Jay Ratliff says it is no secret airline travel is not what it used to be.

“We no longer enjoy travel; We endure it and it’s almost a reality show of ‘how much can these people take on their journey to San Diego?’” Ratliff explains.

Passengers should soon see welcome improvements over the next few months thanks to some recent Department of Transportation rule changes.

“Right now, I think we’re kind of held captive,” says traveler Salina Messman. “I mean, if you’re delayed or you’re sitting on the tarmac for more than an hour, there’s absolutely nothing you can do.”

Among the new rule changes:

  • Passengers will now be automatically entitled to a refund in the original form of payment for flights that are canceled or delayed more than three hours domestically or six hours internationally.
  • You do not have to accept a travel voucher.
  • That is if the bag is not delivered within 12 hours of a domestic flight arriving, or 15 to 30 hours internationally, depending on the length of the flight.
  • You can get your money back on any extra services you paid for, like WiFi or seat selection, which weren’t provided.

Passengers at CVG say the rules help to level the playing field.

“I think it’s fair for the most part,” said Hunter Abramson. “That’s the least they can do for people missing their plans and missing flights.”

If an airline loses your bag, you are also entitled to compensation.

The federal government requires airlines to pay up to $3,800 for its contents on domestic flights.

“Putting a copy of your itinerary inside the bag right before you close it on your checked luggage will help the airline so that if all the tags come off, they can open up the bag and see who it belongs to, where you’re at, and then they can begin the process of reuniting you and the bag,” Ratliff explains.

If you want to take it even further, Ratliff says some tech-savvy travelers use Apple AirTags to track their baggage location.

An easy option that could lead to a less stressful and more enjoyable summer vacation.

The new rules will be rolled out over the next several months.
