I think this hits the nail in terms of what I really like about the Baader - as an aeroplane portable scope it’s virtually unbeatable imo (although the tv85 is pretty good as well). The 95mm aperture gives enough for good planetary observing and the f5.9 ratio makes its a) compact for fitting into various different types of aeroplane bags such as my think tank airport accelerator b) great for widefield scanning of the skies. I’m a bit of a wuss and just didn’t like the idea of taking the focuser and dew shield off of my Tak fc100df but I know several SGLers are fine with this. I’m guessing the views between the Tak and the Baader will be quite similar - i will do a side by side sometime...

I’m hoping to take the Baader to the Southern Hemisphere next summer.

Congrats. Lovely scope Gavin. And perfect for night vision. I have a Steeltrack focuser on my Lunt LS60 - mine was also a bit clunky when I got it - all sorted now and a very nice upgrade if you don't

Yep, total wuss Gavin ?   ?

In all seriousness, the Baader is pretty much the ideal scope for the reasons you've outlined. The Tak is just slightly too long in focal length for some of the largest objects and whilst removing the dewshield and focuser is perfectly doable, it is obviously less convenient than the Baader and would be a pain if having to pack it away every time.

Haha

An unrelated question from the image looking at the optic if i may Gavin......

What i think is the end of the focuser drawtube appears to be bare metal.

ie not painted. Would that possibly be an issue causing unwanted reflections and scatter

when look ing at bright objects.....??

Its probably not an issue at all and just me worrying unnecessarily.

No bare metal - the end tube is painted black like the rest. It was just a lighter colour in the image from the camera flash due to the angle of the picture.

And from observing the moon on the first light definitely no reflections etc ? ?

Thanks for putting my mind at rest.

I  have a year to save up for it now..........

It looks so beautiful. Is it possible for me to get one anywhere? I have asked Baader a few times and was told they don't accept new orders...

Hi Space hopper,

I was out using my Baader 95mm scope last week and thought how unusual (and nice) this scope is. Since it’s been over a year, I wondered whether you got one from Baader by now?

@GavStar  Hi Gavin, good to hear from you.

No, it never happened. I was totally stuck between 2 scopes : the Baader 95 and the APM 105.

I mentioned it to Rupert from Astrograph, and we had a chat and he persuaded me to opt for the 105. Aperture was the swaying point. I then cancelled my order with Baader for the 95.

The APMs LZOS lenses had become somewhat scarce a couple of years ago, but APM were able to source a new batch in between LZOS Russian military contracts.

Marcus at APM used a cheaper aluminium tube and focuser which brought the cost of the 105/650 down by well over £1000 and actually made it cheaper than the Baader 95 by the same amount.

A case, rings and dovetail + carry handle were all included, so with this and the saving i opted for the APM.

As well as the 105/650, LZOS also reintroduced the 100/800 and the 115/805. As you know, all have peerless optics.

I was very tempted by the 100/800, but really wanted the compactness of the 105/650.  No regrets, its a super little scope, and sits very nicely on my DM-4 grab/go mount.

Ok, it doesn't have the travel potential of the Baader 95, but for the time being with house arrest, quarantine etc its not like foreign travel is an option anyway for the foreseeable ?

I've also really wanted a Russian optic for a long time. This is an air spaced triplet design rather than the oil spaced design of the Baader Fluorite.

But i already have one with my new TEC140FL, and thought it better to compliment that with an air spaced designed scope.

One thing i have noticed is that the TEC does reach thermal equilibrium that little bit quicker even with its much larger aperture  : do you find that with your 160...??

Ok, thanks for the update. Yes portability was a key factor for me, I really like the ability to use the Baader on my Az gti mount whereas even the Tak fc100df struggled a bit on this mount (and hence got sold!)

Regarding cool down of my 160mm Tec, yes it does seem pretty quick,  I think this is a characteristic of oil spaced refractors.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

  1. BAADER APO 95/580 CaF2 Travel Companion

The following image of the Pleiades (M45), which our customer Christoph Kaltseis has achieved with the Baader APO Travel Companion and the 10 Micron GM1000HPS on La Palma (Athos Campus), is a special treat regarding image detail and star rendition. Partically interesting is the Nikon D810A camera with a 36x24mm sensor and 4.87my pixels.

Page 1 of 4 - Baader Travel Companion or AP Stowaway - posted in Refractors : I think the 90-95mm refractor is a sweet spot for an airline travel setup. (Although my tv85 did a fine job in tenerife recently 👍) If you had a choice between the following scopes which would you choose and why? (Assume price with rings etc is broadly the same).

  5. Baader Travel Companion

I've liked the look of the Baader Travel Companion for a few years now - it seemed to tick all the boxes: aperture, short length, light, fluorite and also a fast 5.9 focal ratio for nightvision use. However, from the Baader website it appears unobtainium...

  10. Baader Travel Companion

  11. Baader Travel Companion or AP Stowaway

After a very cloudy period in the UK last night I finally managed to do first light with my AP Stowaway as per this post. https://www.cloudyni...42#entry9062637. I also couldn't resist an initial comparison with my Baader Travel Companion. I tried both scopes with the same diagonal and the Ethos 21mm and Pentax xw 5mm on m42.

Page 3 of 4 - Baader Travel Companion or AP Stowaway - posted in Refractors : When i push my (and others) scopes to see their capability, i often get the mag up to about 50X/inch. Of course, perhaps my eyes are so bad that i need that image ...

  20. Anyone have the Baader Apo 95/560 CaF2?

Baader has manufactured a couple of 193 mm triplets with the same design but a higher f-number. It was cloudy when I visited Baader this summer, but word has it that the contrast in the 193 is so high that you can see many stars during daylight. They have one in a four barrel arrangement on a 10Micron GM4000HPS in their on-site observatory.
