Balkans — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

The term Balkan means “mountains” in Turkish and there is no doubt why as the region is carved with beautiful sprawling mountains. This vast region of eastern Europe encompasses Albania , Yugoslavia, Bulgaria , Romania , Moldova, Turkey and parts of Greece and is a backpacker’s paradise. From wine cellars, to medieval towns, islands and sandy beaches, castles and cobblestone streets, and hundreds of street markets, the Balkans region is full of history and architecture ready to be explored.

Tour Highlights

  • Tour through Bulgaria and explore the old-world charm of Sofia  and marvel at the famous gold dome of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
  • At the center of the Balkan peninsula in Macedonia is Skopje , an ancient city on the Vardar river that’s crossed by a beautiful stone bridge. You’ll find the memorial house of Mother Teresa, fortresses, monasteries, and vibrant bazaars built during the Ottoman empire. A trip to Macedonia will certainly take you through a culturally and historically rich country.
  • Staying one day in Dubrovnik in the south of Croatia is an experience you’ll never forget. This walled city is full of art, cobblestone streets, and a displays a magnificent beach. You can also travel over to the capital, Zagreb , which is a costal city and a wonderful cultural hub. While it has become more popular to go on a tour to Croatia , the country is still relatively cheap compared with other mediterranean countries such as Spain, France and Italy.
  • Don’t forget to tour through  Bosnia , Albania, Montenegro and Serbia as well in between as each has their own unique style and beauty.

Travel Tips

  • Bus and train stations in the Balkan region often has outdated times of departure and prices. If this happens, just ask someone at the station for the time and price of departures. While most of the areas you will travel through, they will speak English, if they don’t speak, just write down the location and time you’re looking to travel on a piece of paper and they will understand and correct it for you.
  • In terms of safety, the Balkans is a very safe region as they are no longer at war right now. While there are still some ethnic tensions that remain, you’re not likely to encounter any difficulties. As in all countries, keep a close eye on your belongings and stay towards well maintained/lighted areas.
  • When you’re looking to decide what time of year to go, it’s best to travel during spring or fall since the summer time is way too hot and crowded with people. This means from March to June and September to October are the best timeframes.

All About Balkans (4 Star Hotels)

Very exiting trip, we visited many beautiful places. End of May / beginning of June is the perfect time, because it's not so hot and not so full yet. However, I found the group to big (42 people), we spent quite some time on administrative tasks like check-in and out, toilet breaks, etc.

Balkan Discovery (4 Star Hotels)

This was my first time booking through TourRadar and I am NOT disappointed. My son and I had an amazing adventure and I will definitely recommend and be using TourRadar again. Our Balkan Discovery tour was well organized. Our guide Vijor was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, as was our driver.

Filip was outstanding. He was interactive and informative and available the entire tour. It was a large group but he took the time to get to know us individually early on which made all the difference. Would highly recommend this tour and will be a return Expat Explorer once again.

I loved the tour and everything was amaizing. The stuff was so friendly and the tour guide too

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals Tour

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals

This trip was overall in one word... amazing. The destinations covered were amazing & beautiful. It was handy to have everything sorted out : the accommodation (mix of hostels & hotels), the transportation and many of the activities. Most of the places stayed did not have breakfast, but it was stated clearly that they wouldn't. Some of the places that had breakfast included a selection of breads, cereals and coffee - everything that you need. Croatia blew my mind.. The Croatia part of the tour was very in depth and I have a great idea of what the country is all about now & I also want to go back to see more in the future - The tour goes to cities, lakes, medieval villages, islands, beaches and has stops along the way to each usually. Note that on occasion there are stops along the way & the activity isn't always included in the tour.. I found that out the hard way in Albania. The transportation was a mix of using local transportation, personal buses and ferries. Note that in Albania MOST places do not accept credit card & we had troubles using the bank machines to take out cash.. Albania accepts the Euro as currency so make sure you have lots before you go (I also found out the hard way and didn't have any Euros as i Spent them in Montenegro) The groups for the tour are really what made the trip amazing.. Both groups were super friendly & alot of fun.. being a smaller tour and with the age restrictions it did make for a better trip because we were all around the same age, so had more in common! It was great having a smaller group too because we all became closer & spent even the "free time/Free days" together doing the activities. Our guide Marco was with us for both parts of the tour and overall he did a great job covering the information needed and I felt like we could always go to him if we had questions about anything. That was a part of the tour that I liked: knowing that I had someone to ask questions to who knows the area..Overall, HIGHLY recommend doing BOTH parts of this tour, as Many who didn't do the 2nd leg of the trip were super jealous and wishing they did! You won't regret doing this tour!!

Balkan Adventure (14 Days) Tour

Balkan Adventure (14 Days)

An excellent trip with an outstanding tour director (Sarah Rossi) and highly skilled bus driver (Bruno). Plenty of option excursion choices along with very good included tours with knowledgeable local guides. The only down side were two of the hotels - Hotel Marinela, Sofia Bulgaria, and Mercure Belgrade Excelsior - that were in desperate need of refurbishment not to mention functioning air conditioning and bathroom cleaning. Otherwise, great trip.

Western Balkans Uncovered Tour

Western Balkans Uncovered

I did not know what to expect and was pleased to find it all very interesting and different from our North American standards. The kindness of the people toward tourists was wonderful to experience especially given the difficult history all of the countries visited had gone through. Food and drink were very good.

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP Tour

Balkan Experience – seven countries in two weeks - SMALL GROUP

This is my third time in the area, but first time in this part of the Balkans. We are absolutely satisfied. We saw and experıenced so many beautıful places. I am still full of impressions. Perfect choice of the hotels, better than promised. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and a very safe driver. From day 1 we felt safe and peaceful. The communication with the office was also smooth. All in all - a faultless tour.

Balkan Dreams end Bulgaria Tour

Balkan Dreams end Bulgaria

Good trip to get a feel for the region and an appreciation for the uniqueness of each of the nations you visit. Hotels were very good for the most part. Only one looked like a carryover from the bad old days. Breakfasts and dinners were typically quite good Places visited were very good. Dubrovnik was not to be missed. Mountain top monastery in Greece was truly spectacular. Albania was surprisingly modern in the city center of the capital Needed an additional day in Sarajevo. With the assassination, the Olympics and the siege of the 90's, there is too much history to only have a single day there. Biggest problem was the amount of time in transit on the bus compared to the time seeing the sights we drove to. Interesting concept in the way the company recombines groups at each point to customize the experience desired by each of the travelers. Does mean that you may be travelling with totally new companions and guides each couple of days. Our guide for most of the time was Victor. Relatively young and new to the business. Fluent in Bulgarian, Spanish and English. Struck a nice balance in furnishing information about the places we visited without being over-bearing with it. Had the ability to keep things organized and get what we needed at various points. Street smart and I'm sure will get better with his knowledge of the region as time goes on. I'd bet he'll be really good at this down the road.

Dubrovnik to Athens: Beachfronts & Fortresses Tour

Dubrovnik to Athens: Beachfronts & Fortresses

This trip was absolutely amazing! And it was all due to our amazing guide - he was, hands down, the most knowledgeable and charismatic tour guide a person could have dreamed up! He not only made it possible for our diverse group to get to know one another, he introduced us to experiences, places and persons that a local would only know. He was meticulously organized down to a "T", arranged for upgrades at his own expense, and left the group with little to no worries about where/what would be done next. If I could book tours with this guide solely - I would. In fact, for my next adventure I do plan on booking with G Adventures and requesting his tour.

Balkan Kaleidoscope Tour

Balkan Kaleidoscope

Enjoyed the beauties of all the countries in Balkan. Good learning of the complicated histories there. Admiring the people experiencing the difficult transition.

What people love about Balkans Tours

My experience with this tour was great. The hotels were tops. Our tour guide very attentive and knowledgeable. Our bus driver, Barry, was the best. The itinerary is very busy and a bit tight. I would suggest spending less time at Dubrovnik and more at Kotor. Our pre-fix meals were good, but maybe offer a choice of two or three entrees? Overall, it was a very enjoyable trip!
Itinerary - Great. Good mix of hotspots like city capitals, and some lesser known places like smaller towns and hidden gems. Guide - Excellent, 10 stars to both of my guides this trip. Organization - Everything went extremely smoothly, also in part to other travelers being amazing.

All you need to know about Balkan Sightseeing Tours

What countries make up balkan.

If you’re trying to choose your Balkan travel destinations, you’ve got plenty of options. There are several countries within the Balkan Peninsula including Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Bulgaria and Kosovo. Parts of Croatia, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Slovenia, Romania and Serbia also make up the Balkans.

What is the best time to visit the Balkans?

Spread over half a million square kilometres, the climate varies greatly around the Balkans. In general, the spring and autumn shoulder seasons are perfect for mild temperatures, less crowded cities and blooming national parks, while summer brings hot weather and perfect beach days. If you’re taking on the chilly winter, pack your snow gear!

Why are they called the Balkans?

The meaning behind the name ‘Balkans’ is obscure. The word ‘Balkan’ means ‘mountain’ in Turkish and was aptly used to describe this mountainous region throughout history. While the concept of the “Balkans” was created by a German geographer in 1808, the term became more popular in the 19th and 20th centuries as a geopolitical concept.

What is the best Balkan route?

Dreaming of a Balkans road trip? Our top Balkans itinerary takes you to the best places in the region, starting in Romania’s capital Bucharest. Head to Sofia in Bulgaria, cross to Skopje in North Macedonia, then arrive in Tirana in Albania. Travel up to Montenegro, see the sights of Bosnia and Herzegovina, then finish up in Serbia’s Belgrade for the ultimate Balkan adventure.

Serbia has connected the West and the East for centuries. A land, where cultures, faiths, climates and landscapes meet, that today represents a modern, European country. Nevertheless, Serbia knew how to preserve the genuine beauty of its mountains, canyons, gorges, caves, forest and other natural jewels.

WHY TO VISIT SERBIA?

The city of Belgrade lies on two international waterways, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, which surround it on three sides. Because of its position, Belgrade is fittingly referred to as the ''Gateway to the Balkans'' and the ''Door to Central Europe''. The oldest archaeological finds in the Belgrade area date from the fifth millennium BC. The prehistoric site of Vincha, located on the right bank of the Danube, holds traces of prehistoric human cultural material (Neolithic plastic art), thus making Belgrade one of the oldest cities in Europe.

Museum of Yugoslavia, located in Belgrade, is dedicated to Yugoslavia, once one of the strongest countries in Europe, which disintegrated in 1991. It holds more than 200.000 items, which illustrate the life in former Yugoslavia, with emphasis on the life and work of Yugoslav president Josip Broz Tito.

On a rocky cliff at the base of Frushka Gora, sits the grand Petrovaradin Fortress, which has been the site of many military forts throughout the ages. The latest archaeological studies indicate that this site has a history spanning for more than 2.000 years. A sample of the many cultures and societies that have used this site include Celts, Romans, Byzantines, Hungarians, Turks, and Austrians. According to one legend, the name Petrovaradin is derived from words of numerous languages – "Petra" is Latin for rock, "var" is Hungarian for town and "din" is Turkish for faith. Hence, the whole name would be translated as "The town of the Rock, Firm as Faith".

Sharganska Osmica (the Shargan Eight) is an old-fashioned narrow-gauge railway. Its construction was finished in 1925. Today it represents a major tourist attraction, because of its ancient look, carriages with wooden seats and wood stoves, as well as the beautiful, wild landscape of Tara Mountain that the train runs through while making its arduous way to one of the mountain peaks.

Ljubostinja is one of the most beautiful and most significant monasteries in Serbia. It was built by Princess Milica, from 1388 to 1405, and is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Its name comes from the Old Slavic words ''Ljubov'' and ''Stinja'', which mean "place of love". This monastery is indeed a place of love. The Princess gave the monastery this name in honor of her love for Prince Lazar. The Prince and the Princess met exactly where this monastery was built.

Open sky museum ''Staroselo'' (Old village) in Sirogojno is actually an authentic village from the end of the 19th and beginning of 20th century and depicts the life of a country family. In the ''Staroselo'', which is a complex of houses and accompanying wooden buildings, you can find an exhibition, which features old national architecture saved from the village of Zlatibor. All objects and households are authentic and the museum workshop offers replicas of the museum pieces of art, pottery, carpentry and other craft.

UNESCO protected Gamzigrad-Romuliana is a Late Roman palace and memorial complex built in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries, commissioned by the Emperor Galerius Valerius Maximianus, who in honor of his mother, Romula called it Romuliana. The strong fortifications of the palace are an allusion to the fact that the Tetrarchy Emperors were all senior military leaders. The spatial and visual relationships between the palace and the memorial complex are unique.

Located near the town of Knjazevac, Stara Planina is the largest mountain in eastern Serbia. This high mountain range of fascinating beauty and unspoiled nature is a natural border with Bulgaria. As one of the most beautiful mountains in the country, Stara Planina is a natural resource of extraordinary importance, as it belongs to the first category of natural resources. Babin Zub, situated at an elevation of 1.758 m, holds one of the most beautiful landscapes of Stara Planina. The striking rocks of Babin Zub end to the southeast of Midzhur (2.169m high), the highest peak of Stara Planina in Serbia. Babin Zub is a protected natural reservation and holds a developed ski resort.

Saratov, Russia

Saratov, Russia

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Saratov

Full-flowing Volga gave birth to many cities. One of these cities is Saratov, a former center of the largest Russian province, a city of merchants, gold miners and first Russian manufacturers. Saratov is still has the charm of those times. Old farmsteads, bank buildings, retail and apartment houses – all that is a part of Saratov’s history, which are proudly demonstrated to numerous tourists now.

People go to Saratov not to find adventures. This region is deprived of high dangerous mountain hills, swift rivers, sea coasts, promising an exciting extreme leisure. Instead one can find here mixed forests, groves, woods, deserts and steppes. The mixed flora and fauna of Asia and Europe has created here unseen picturesque scenes. There are 124 monuments of nature here.

The natural diversity of Saratov region creates favorable conditions for active recreation both in summer and in winter. In winter, ski routes are ready for fans of skiing sport whereas during warm seasons fishing, hunting, active water recreation, namely rowing and canoeing, sailing, yachting, boat, motor boat and water scooter trips are available for toursists.

Saratov is located on the right bank of Volga, and surrounded on three sides with not high mountains. The city’s name originated from Tatar word “sara tau” – “yellow mountain”. The main trade routes from the Black Sea, Caucasus, Persia, Khorezm, and the Urals and, of course, from Russia ran across Saratov Povolj’e (Volga Region).

According to one of the versions, the city was established in 1584-1589 years approximately, on the place of a Tatar village, where Saratovka river fell into. Another version says that the city was found in 1590, and it was built as a guard point on the Volga way. The exact location of the first settlement was not established.

The town was burned down in 1613 year, and in 1674 was moved to the right bank of Volga River, that is to say, to its present position. Gradually Saratov became famous as a merchant city. That time people were engaged in pottery, selling of fish, salt and bread. The manufacturing production was well-developed. And Saratov became a capital of the Volga Region. It was the 3rd largest city after Moscow and Petersburg among the cities of Russia.

In 1722 Peter I visited this city on his way to Persia as well. In 1781 a famous rebel Emel’yan Pugachev which took the decision to occupy the city, entered Saratov. Those historical facts were described in the novel “The Captain's Daughter” by A.S. Pushkin. From a shabby town into which Saratov turned after Pugachev’s invasion, it became soon a rich merchant city and remained to be the largest cities of the Volga Region till 20-ies of XX century. In USSR Saratov was a closed city. There were several big enterprises of defense industry, particularly, the Saratov aviation plant.

Saratov is a motherland of many famous Russian figures. Nikolay Chernyshevskoy – Russian publicist, writer and literary critic, was born in Saratov. Such actors as Sergey Phillipov, Oleg Tabakov and Evgeniy Mironov were born here.

Many old farmsteads and hundreds of architecture monuments are preserved in Saratov Region. The cultural tourist complex “The Old City of Uvek”, which is situated on the place of an ancient settlement and whose prosperity period fell to the 12th century is not far from Saratov.

Saratov is a major city in southern Russia. The city was initially founded in the 16th century as a fortress to protect the southern districts of the Russian Empire. Situated on the Volga River, Saratov was a major military aircraft manufacturing site, the home of the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, and a vital part of the Soviet space program. There is a museum dedicated to Gagarin and his life. Saratov has a rich cultural life, as well - among the most famous sites is the Conservatoire designed in a Neo-Gothic style as well as the Drama Theatre named after Ivan Slonov, one of the oldest theatres in Russia. For those interested in art there is the Radischev Art Museum with more than 20,000 exhibits. Of other interest, the community of Volga Germans was centred in the Saratov region. In the early 20th century over 800,000 ethnic Germans made their home in this area preserving many of their German customs.

There are flights and trains from Moscow to Saratov, but is normally visited as part of a river cruise. The embankments along the Volga give some spectacular views including the ‘Old Bridge’ which was the longest bridge in Europe until the 1980s.
