Wading through the colorful coves and granite boulders of The Baths in Virgin Gorda is undeniably the most notable experience you can have in the British Virgin Islands. Travelers and experts alike agree: It's the must-see attraction of the BVI archipelago. Massive smooth ash gray boulders of varying sizes rise from the sea's crystalline waters, making a maze of sorts for travelers to wade or swim through. Climbing through the crevices and grottoes of The Baths isn't terribly intensive, but the granite boulders can be slippery so swim shoes or sneakers are encouraged. Once you reach Devil's Bay, the stunning beach clearing at the end of the rocks, you'll find shallow clear waters perfect for a little light snorkeling or restful sunbathing.

Visitors are consistent in their praise of The Baths, calling the natural wonder "beautiful" and the beach "pristine."  Although photo opportunities are rife at The Baths, some travelers recommend saving space on your camera for a few shots of The Baths' Cathedral Room – a natural pool within a small cave.

The Baths are located at the bottom of a hill on the southern end of Virgin Gorda. There's a moderately priced restaurant at the top of the hill – appropriately known as "Top of the Baths" – and a refreshment stand and lockers located at the base of The Baths. There's a $3 fee for adults and $2 fee for kids ages 11 to 17 and younger to access The Baths. Kids age 10 and younger get in for free.

#2 Cane Garden Bay (Tortola)

The center of activity in the BVI is on Tortola and the center of activity on Tortola is Cane Garden Bay. You'll spend the day at this northwestern beach swimming in the turquoise water, renting a boat or kayak, snorkeling around the beach's western edge and enjoying the great food. And when the sun goes down, Cane Garden Bay turns up. Happy hours are aplenty and live music wafts from local hotels with thrumming bars like Quito's Gazebo , Elm and Myett's – plus, chances are you'll be dancing.

Recent travelers can't say enough about Cane Garden Bay. They're especially amazed at how quickly the area bounced back after Hurricane Irma, noting a collection of operating restaurants and bars, and the opportunity to rent Jet Skis. However, some say the chilled out atmosphere of the beach changes when the cruise crowds roll in. Either try to avoid visiting when a cruise ship is in port (check the  BVI Ports Authority website  for details) or plan to arrive early in the day to stake out a prime spot on the sand.

The Baths National Park

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Encompassing the beaches and rocky shoreline at the southwestern tip of Virgin Gorda, The Baths is a collection of massive granite boulders as large as 40 foot in diameter, with white sand beaches and secret rock pools.

The cavernous surroundings are a result of molten rock seeping up into the existing volcanic rock layers. The molten rock did not reach the surface, so it cooled slowly and formed a hard crystalline granite layer. Further shrinkage and cracking formed blocks, which were exposed when the softer volcanic rock above eroded away. Weathering rounded the corners of the boulders to what they are today. These massive boulders are also found at Fallen and Broken Jerusalem.

A series of steps and rope handrails guide explorers along a trail through the boulders from the beach at The Baths to the sandy expanse that is Devil’s Bay.

This popular daytime anchorage is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The dinghy dock line offshore provides facilities for small vessels, whilst mooring buoys protect the reef from anchor damage. Swim line markers guide vessels through safe channels when approaching the beaches, but caution should always been used and speeds should not exceed 5 mph.

Onshore facilities include bathrooms and lockers, creating a safe and enjoyable experience in this unique environment.

Strong ocean swells can occur in the winter months, preventing use of the mooring buoys and access to the beach from the sea. Swimming is also discouraged during these periods, due to the strong currents.

Everything You Need to Know Before Visiting the Virgin Gorda Baths

The Baths beach at Virgin Gorda

No trip to the Virgin Islands is complete without a visit to the Virgin Gorda Baths. Pristine beaches with crystalline water are framed by remarkable granite boulders known as The Baths. This phenomenal destination has jaw-dropping views of the encircling Virgin Islands, scenic hikes, and a maze of caves that form colorful cathedrals. In this post, I discuss everything you need to know before visiting the Virgin Gorda Baths.

When we decided to take a week-long Caribbean cruise for my husband's 40th birthday, I was most excited to visit the British Virgin Islands, specifically to see the Virgin Gorda Baths. Apart from the fact that we would be traveling to The Baths on his actual birthday, the Tortola excursion also appeared to combine my two favorite travel things; adventurous hiking and beautiful beaches. Plus, 50 million-year-old boulders! Well, not only did the national park live up to my expectations, it exceeded them!

Virgin Gorda History

Virgin Gorda, which translated means The Fat Virgin, was named by Christopher Columbus in 1493 on his second journey to the Americas. The island's shape reminded him of a voluptuous woman, hence the name. In fact, Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the British Virgin Islands. The Gorda Baths are the most popular attraction and the gem of the BVI.

The Baths are a geological wonder, but how and where did these boulders come from? Simply put, they were formed by volcanic activity forced to the Earth’s surface. When the molten rock cooled, it created the gigantic granite boulders known as The Baths. Throughout the millions of years that’s passed, the waves from the sea have continued to shape the batholiths into the unique formations that reside today.

Tips to Know Before Visiting

  • The entrance fee is $3 per adult and $2 per child.
  • The Baths are open from 8 am -4:30 pm.
  • Restrooms are available at the Top of The Baths and The Baths beach but not Devil's Bay.
  • To beat the crowds, plan to arrive as early as possible. There was a small group of us at 8 am, compared to the large crowd we saw entering the park while we were leaving by 11 am. This will also help when multiple cruise ships are docked.
  • If it’s doable, try to come on a weekday rather than a weekend to also enjoy fewer crowds.
  • Pay attention to the safety flags on the beach! If you see a red flag, it means the water is dangerous, and visitors should not attempt to swim. If you see a yellow flag, take caution when swimming.
  • Travel light. Pack only the essentials as you’ll have to carry everything while hiking and scrambling through caves. Leave the beach/tote bag at home for this adventure.

How to Get to the Baths in Virgin Gorda

There are generally two types of travelers to make their way to Virgin Gorda: the Virgin Islands visitor and the cruiser stopping at the port of Tortola. I was the latter. There are three ways to get to Virgin Gorda. The cheapest and most common way is by ferry and taxi. A traveler could also fly into Virgin Gorda, but the airport is tiny, and flights are expensive. Finally, there’s the method of a private boat charter, also on the pricey side.

Getting There on Your Own

The two main ferries that travel to Virgin Gorda are Speedy’s Ferry Services and Smith’s Ferry Services . A majority of the ferries leave from Road Town Tortola, but you can also catch a direct ferry from Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. These direct ferries run on limited schedules. Ferrying from St. Thomas to Road Town and then to Virgin Gorda is an alternative option.

Prices start at $20 per person for a one-way ticket or $30 per person for round-trip tickets from Tortola. A taxi will cost less than $10 per trip and take less than 10 minutes to get to Virgin Gorda from the ferry dock. Prices start at $70 per person for direct ferries from St. Thomas. The ferry takes approximately 40 minutes from Road Town in Tortola and about 2 hours from St. Thomas.

For cruisers, you can make the trip to the national park from the port of Tortola on your own if you have enough time in port for that day. From Road Town at the Tortola port, catch one of the ferries and then grab a cab to and from The Baths at Virgin Gorda. This is a cheaper option if time allows.

Tip: Arrive at the ferry 30 minutes before departure for the ferry from St. Thomas.

Getting There With a Cruise Excursion

Cruisers can choose one of the shore excursions available through their selected cruise line. I decided to book through our cruise ship because I wanted the first ferry out to beat the crowds. Additionally, if something were to happen to cause a delay, the ship would have to wait for me since the excursion was booked directly through the cruise. It comes down to a matter of preference, but I would factor time into the decision.

Overall, I found the ferry was a pleasant trip each way, and the car ride was quick and easy. There were calm waters on the day we traveled, so I imagine this can be a bumpier journey on rough sea days. If you decide to book through your cruise line, try to book it before your vacation begins. These tours sold out quickly once we were on board.

Tip: Bring plenty of sun protection if you plan to sit on the top deck of the ferry as the sun can get dangerous on open water.

What to Expect in The Virgin Gorda Baths

The trail down to devil's bay.

Arriving at The Baths by car will take you up the hillside to the Top of The Baths. From there, you need to hike down to the beaches. There are two trails you can choose from, either hike down to The Baths or Devil’s Bay. I strongly recommend starting with Devil’s Bay since it’s not difficult to hike down and easier to hike back up from Baths beach. This isn’t a challenging trail by any means and is less than a half mile from the top, down to Devil's Bay. However, there are a few sections of slippery sand, loose rocks, and uneven ground, so be mindful of your surroundings when hiking.

Despite the struggle I had contending with several loose rock patches, mostly because I wore flip-flops which I regret and advise against, I was pleasantly surprised by how scenic the hike was. We passed multiple overlooks, that the national park conveniently points out with signs. The vistas were similar but equally beautiful, and all offered panoramic views. Lush greenery with cacti peppered through the area, the ocean stretching out for miles behind it, and countless islands in the distance rounded out the impressive scene. These spots were perfect for us to catch our breath, snap a couple of photos and then continue on the trail.

Vista in Virgin Gorda

The path was straightforward to follow, but there are still plenty of signs pointing in the right direction. As the descent grew closer to Devil's Bay, there were a few steep and narrow parts, but it was still manageable. Cacti bordered the path on each side, which was lovely to take note of, and before I knew it, I had reached the jaw-dropping Devil’s Bay.

Devil's Bay sign

Tip: Wear proper footwear. Learn from my flip-flops mistake. Sneakers or active sandals would be perfect for the trail down. Additionally, use the facilities at the Top of The Baths before hiking to Devil’s Bay.

Devil’s Bay National Park

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have visited some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. However, taking one step out onto the soft unblemished golden sand of Devil’s Bay, blew the rest away. Crystal aquamarine water that sparkled beneath the early morning sun was encompassed by massive boulders, the biggest I’d ever bore witness to. They give the beach a prehistoric look, which is quite fitting considering these boulders are millions of years old.

Couple together at Virgin Gorda

Devil’s Bay feels untouched from the rest of the world, with nothing but a blanket of sand, the sea, and granite boulders to occupy this stunning location. We were the first group to arrive for the day, so we had the opportunity to explore each side of the beach, and spent our time marveling at the behemoth rocks, scrambling over them, and playing in the water. This is hands down my favorite spot in the Caribbean now, and I could have easily spent hours here, but unfortunately, time was limited, and we needed to make our way to the next destination - the cave trail to The Baths.

The Cave Trail

If you’ve ever seen pictures of the Virgin Gorda Baths, then you’ve undoubtedly come across images from the famous cave trail. At this point, some physical dexterity does come into play. You will use ropes and ladders to climb into tight spaces and over rocks to get through the caves to The Baths.

The trail begins with a descent into a cavernous tunnel, it appears a little scary at first, but it’s all about taking your time. Holding onto a rope as a handrail, I climbed down a ladder, to make my way through the spacious alcove. The water was above ankle length but below the knees, and easy to wade through. For most of the trail, I remained awe-struck by the stunning rock formations, tucked-away grottos, and tidal pools.

Boulder cave in Virgin Gorda

After the initial descent, there are a few spots where I needed to squeeze through boulders and climb over rocks but nothing too challenging. Towards the end of the trail, there is another long rope to use as a handrail to safely shimmy across an uneven section. Once more a little scary, but I proceeded slowly and was rewarded with a stunning cathedral grotto. The cave walls created an explosion of color that was hard to tear my eyes away from, but I eventually made my way on and headed to The Baths.

Cave in the Virgin Gorda Baths

The Baths, similar to Devil’s Bay, is a gorgeous beach of huge boulders that frame the sparkling sea. It's equally impressive but much less secluded. There was a larger crowd here at this time, it was later in the morning at this point, and some groups start their tour of the Virgin Gorda Baths with The Baths beach first. This beach also has a bar, gear available to rent, restrooms, and souvenir stalls.

The Baths at Virgin Gorda

Further down the beach, there were more boulders to explore, but instead, we chose to swim in the beautiful water. On the day we visited the Gorda Baths, there was a yellow flag on the beach indicating to be cautious while swimming. They weren’t kidding, the waves were strong!

However, we stayed close to shore and managed the sea just fine. We encountered a few visitors who were even snorkeling! After a bit of sun, it was the hike back to the top. From The Baths, it was a simple under 10-minute walk up.

The Baths National Park sign

Where to Eat and Drink Near The Virgin Gorda Baths

Top of the baths .

This restaurant’s name speaks for itself, it’s perched at the top of The Baths National Park. Boasting killer views of the national park and the surrounding islands on their outdoor terrace, with good service and great Caribbean food. You can also find a pool, restrooms, and shopping up here. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to take in a meal, but we did enjoy a moment to soak up the views after the trek back up.

Poor Man’s Bar

Located on The Baths beach, this small but mighty bar is known for its tasty painkillers, a rum-orange pineapple-coconut cocktail beloved in the British Virgin Islands. You’ll also find all the classic tropical drinks like piña coladas and daiquiris, as well as beer, soda, and some light snacks and sandwiches. Best of all, you can rent all the items here you need to enjoy the beach: chairs, snorkel gear, and floaties.

Mad Dog Bar & Restaurant

Right across the street from Top of The Baths, sits Mad Dog Bar , an unassuming but charming eatery and bar. Mad Dog has rave reviews for their delicious fare and relaxed atmosphere. If you’re looking to kick back after a day of sun and climbing over boulders, this is a great spot.

What to Pack for Virgin Gorda

Waterproof dry bag .

A  dry bag  is perfect to keep your belongings secure from the water as you wade through the cave tunnel. It's also easy to carry. We used a backpack, which was fine but did get damp, and in the future would choose a dry bag. I wouldn’t bring a beach bag as it would be difficult to hike or climb with.

Active sandal

I know I’ve already mentioned multiple times how much I regret wearing flip-flops, but I honestly can’t stress it enough, I was sliding everywhere. While sneakers would also be fine, an active sandal would be easier to change in and out of on the beach.

Water shoes

These  water shoes  would be best for the cave trail if you’re worried about slipping on rocks. Wearing a shoe like this that grips will help. Travelers in our group also mentioned that these shoes protected the bottom of their feet from any stray rocks in the water. In full transparency, I was fine barefoot on the boulders. Nevertheless, I think everyone should consider water shoes based on their comfort level.

Waterproof camera or GoPro

If you’re hoping to capture those amazing images in the sea or through the caves then you can’t go wrong with either a waterproof camera or a GoPro .

Waterproof phone case

This waterproof phone case is what I opted to use rather than a waterproof camera. Then again, I always prefer my phone over a camera. It protected my phone well and all my pictures still came out perfect, a win-win.

Final Thoughts

That’s everything you need to know before visiting the Virgin Gorda Baths! If you’re planning a trip to the Virgin Islands or considering a cruise that stops in Tortola, then l highly suggest adding The Baths to your itinerary. Let me know in the comments if you’ll be visiting The Baths on your next Caribbean vacation!

Great post! The Baths have been on my list for a long time, and I want to go even more after seeing your photos.

I'm so glad! It's been one of my favorite excursions to date, you'll love it!

Nice write up, but you completely missed the nicest form of travel to the baths and the reason you saw people snorkeling the beach-those of us who sail the Caribbean pick up a mooring off of the baths, swim in and enjoy the caves without any of the hassle of land transfers. Another way of access you may choose to note.

Thank you! True, this is another way to travel to the Baths! I imagine that would be quite beautiful, and appreciate the input!

Thanks for the great write-up! I'm trying to decide between an excursion through the ship or doing the Baths on our own. The ship excursions seem to vary in how much you have to keep moving and stay with the group vs. explore on your own, but our ship is only in port from 6 AM - 2 PM and the ferry schedule doesn't seem to align with that very well. Can I ask what cruise line you were on, and what time your group arrived at the Baths?

I had a similar debate when I was deciding on how to visit the Baths prior to my cruise. I went with Norwegian and had the same time in port. I took the early morning tour and after the ferry and car ride, I was walking the trail by 8 am! I found I had enough time in the Baths on my own and really enjoyed getting there before the other tours/ferries. I also tend to lean towards ship excursions when the time in port is short since the ship then can't leave without me. No matter what you'll have an amazing time!

We are going to The Baths on a cruise in February. I so appreciate your attention to detail...even where restrooms are, shoes advice, etc. It REALLY helps to know all of that and not have to figure it out. Thank you for the great write up!!

I am so glad you found it helpful! I like to go into places knowing all the details beforehand so I'm happy to share! I hope you have an amazing time in The Baths, they were the highlight of my last cruise.

Sleeping in on vacation is so overrated. Why waste time in your cabin when there is plenty of beautiful sunshine, white sand beaches and 40-foot boulders to explore?

That is what was on our minds when the alarm went off at 5 am on the fifth day of our recent Norwegian Escape cruise. We were scheduled to meet for our shore excursion at 7 am when we would be escorted to a ferry for the short ride to The Baths at Virgin Gorda  in the British Virgin Isles . We would then get to spend the morning traversing these natural formations, taking pictures and relaxing in the warm Caribbean Sea.

Eight years ago the wife and I had visited The Baths, rated one of the most popular shore excursions for ships stopping at the British Virgin Island of Tortola . Our memories were a bit hazy, but we did remember really enjoying the time we spent at this natural wonder, so we decided to venture back there again. Wavering on whether we would just take the ferry there on our own or book through the cruise line, we decided to play it safe and purchase the tour through Norwegian Cruise Line after comparing the ferry schedule to our time in port.

Arriving at Virgin Gorda, home to beautiful beaches and remarkable rock formations.

Getting to The Baths

By the time we got to the Escape Theater, our meeting place on the ship, there were plenty of other cruisers in their swimsuits with towels in hand ready to enjoy this unique beach break as well. With little delay, we were ushered off the ship onto the docks for a short walk to our Speedy’s Ferry for the 35-minute ride over to Virgin Gorda, a small island northeast of Road Town, Tortola.

Out into the open water, I was able to get some great shots of our cruise ship from the open air deck of the ferry.

During the ride over, our guides gave us a short briefing about what to expect and our timeline for the day. Ocean swells at the beach were strong this morning with a “red flag” warning in place, indicating that it was not recommend for swimming or snorkeling. It was noted that this was a “recommendation,” as the guide knew that this group of weary cruisers had not traveled this far to not  go swimming.

Arriving in Spanishtown slightly before 8 am, we boarded open air buses for the 10-minute ride to The Baths National Park . Along the drive, our driver pointed out some of the vacation homes and resorts along with way, noting that Morgan Freeman owned a home on the island. When we arrived at the parking lot at the Top of the Baths, we realized the cruisers on our group of buses were the first visitors to the beach. Our marching orders were to be back to the meeting point by 10:45 am, giving us 2½ hours to enjoy the beach, natural pools and caverns that awaited us down along the shore.

Skull Rock, one of the first landmarks visitors will encounter on the way to The Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Descending to The Baths

There are two paths down to the shoreline. You can take the main path down to the beach or take the route straight to Devil’s Bay, bypassing The Baths. If you're not interested in doing some morning spelunking, then the direct route to this beach might be your ticket, but we came to explore. Camera? Check. Water shoes? Check.

To get down to the beach, there is a 1,000-foot decent along a desert-like path that is mostly manageable with some natural stairs. It took only 15 minutes or so to get to the beach. Along the way, be on the lookout for a skull-faced imprint on one of the large boulders. This is just the beginning of the magnificent formations and rock creations you'll see during your journey.

Once you arrive at the beach, you'll see some large boulders carving out natural swimming areas. There's also the Poor Man’s Bar that serves drinks and snacks during the day. Lockers are also available here to rent. Just keep in mind that if you do leave your belongings in a locker, you'll need to backtrack to collect them later.

While you could relax and enjoy the warm waters at this beach for the remainder of your visit, for most of us the adventure was just beginning.

View of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. See! It's not all boulders.

Make your way to Devil’s Bay

South of this main beach, you find the path to Devil’s Bay. Essentially, you make a big loop around the entire park. During this exciting journey to Devil’s Bay, you have to crouch, crawl, and wade your way through some amazing granite boulders and sea pools. Before entering the first cave, make note of the large boulder known as “the shelf,” which makes a great photo op.

While you do not need to be an iron man to make it through the caves, you do need to be somewhat agile as you will be traversing slippery rocks and maneuvering through tight spaces. For your very first challenge, you will need to crouch your way through a narrow cleft opening into the first cave. Along the way there are ropes, ladders and some stairs built to help you maneuver up and around these giant rocks.

Rock outcroppings at the edge of Devil's Bay on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands.

Walking through the caves you'll come across areas of varying water levels depending on the tides, but you can find a way to maneuver through the path in water that is below your knees. However, for those who love to swim, you can also take advantage of these natural sea pools.

As you meander along this cavernous trail, don’t worry about the crowds as they too will be admiring the natural beauty of the caverns and pools. There are plenty of nooks and crannies to discover, so take your time. We were sure to take in everything during our explorations and stopped to take many pictures along the way, and it only took us around 40 minutes to arrive at Devil’s Bay. Throughout your journey, have your imagination and camera ready as there are several boulders said to resemble different shapes like a Whale’s Head and Lion’s Head.

Shimmy time! A tight squeeze at The Baths in Virgin Gorda.

Go ahead, take a swim

We arrived to Devil’s Bay by 9:15 am, leaving us about 90 minutes to enjoy. Lucky for us, the tides had improved, and the beach was now flying a yellow flag. That was all the encouragement I needed to head straight for this pristine water. The wife, who does not swim, spent her remaining time relaxing on the beach.

This is your time to snorkel, swim, float or do all of the above. Be aware, though, that the tide can be quite strong, pushing and pulling you from shore. If you're traveling with children, we recommend staying close to the shore.

After spending about 45 minutes floating in the refreshing, lukewarm water, we decided to start our return trek around 10 am. We wanted to allow time to browse the shops, get our complimentary rum punch drink, and check out the views from the patio at the Top of the Baths Restaurant before boarding the bus back to the port.

We took the most direct path back from Devil’s Bay to the parking lot. Although still uphill, it is a relatively easy climb. Similar to the first path down, it is a dry, dirt path with some natural steps and cacti along the way. Taking our time, we were back at the main entrance in about 15 minutes.

The view from the patio at Top of the Baths restaurant on Virgin Gorda.

Before you leave

Before leaving The Baths, you should head over to the Top of the Baths Restaurant . You can score some postcard-worthy shots of the surrounding islands and the boulders below from the restaurant’s patio. The restaurant is open from 8 am to 10 pm, serving Caribbean treats for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also have a full bar, so after a day at the Baths, you might want to stop in for a bite to eat or a drink. Free wi-fi is also available here, so you can send out a few social media posts before leaving The Baths to make all of your friends at home jealous. (That's the goal, right?) A few shops can also be found nearby, including a local art gallery and your typical souvenir shop.

Hopping back on one of the open air buses at 10:45 am, we were back to the ferry docks in no time and heading back to Tortola slightly past 11 am. Our ferry ride back did take slightly longer than our trip earlier in the morning, but we still had plenty of time to browse the nearby artisan village in Road Town and capture more amazing shots of our cruise ship before heading back on board.

How about you?  Have you been to Virgin Gorda? What was your experience like?

Disney Cruise Excursion The Baths at Virgin Gorda

Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

For our Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Fantasy, we wanted to do an excursion at our first Tortola, British Virgin Islands. It was our first time visiting the port.

Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

The Planning

The most popular excursions seem to be to The Baths at Virgin Gorda. Disney Cruise offers two excursions to the site; TT23 Tour to Virgin Gorda and TT04 A Day at the Baths (I’ve included the complete descriptions below the post). Both excursions appear to be very similar; you take a ferry boat to Virgin Gorda, then take a safari bus to the Top of the Baths.

The differences are that TT23 Tour to Virgin Gorda lasts 4-4.5 hours , includes a beverage and costs $89 for adults and $69 for children aged 5-9 (as of February 2023). TT04 A Day at the Baths lasts 5.5 to 6 hours and includes lunch and a beverage. It costs $135 for adults and $115 for children aged 5-9 (as of February 2023), which is $46 more per adult for a lunch and an extra 1.5 to 2 hours, some of which will be spent eating.

TT23 Tour to Virgin Gorda

After weighing the pros and cons of each tour, we settled on the TT23 Tour of Virgin Gorda. The extra time and lunch didn’t feel like it was worth an extra $46 per person to us. The other plus with this excursion is that on our sailing there was a choice of two times. A morning time around 8 am and the time we chose was 12:45. Travelling with two teenagers meant that we would have a much easier morning for everyone.

Warning from Disney

Before I continue, I should let you know that Disney sent multiple messages over multiple days with a warning about the tour. “ Please be advised that during this call to Tortola, the tour may be considered strenuous depending on the physical condition of the participants as this call entails extended periods of hiking, standing and leaning over. However, if you want to check on your reservation due to this update, please visit us at the Port Adventures Desk located on Deck 5 Midship during opening hours, and we can provide you with all the information you may need. Have a Magical Day! Port Adventures Team. “

Disney Cruise Shore Excursion The Baths

I wasn’t concerned initially about the tour, but after the fourth message, I was beginning to feel a little anxious about the tour. Make sure you wear walking shoes and avoid wearing flip-flops. Some of the rocks had sand on them, making them a little slippery. There were also some stairs and a few ropes. Personally, I think the constant warnings were a little much. You just need to watch your step during some spots on tour.

Tortolla Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

Arrival in Tortolla

We docked in Tortolla early. Since we had lots of time before our excursion, we had breakfast and headed off the ship to see the shops in the port. There was a coffee shop that had wifi, and it was very busy. My daughter also did a little souvenir shopping too. You can also take pictures with a large BVI sign. after an hour or so we headed back onto the ship and met up with my sister and niece, and went to lunch in Cabanas.

Disney Fantasy British Virgin Islands Tortola

Excursion Meet Up

We went to the Walt Disney theatre to join the rest of the passengers on our tour. There were cast members outside the theatre to check us in and direct us to our group. Be aware that multiple excursions may meet in the same location, make sure you join the correct group for your excursion. The Cast Members will give you instructions while you are waiting. Bring your ID and Key to the World Card, remind you to leave any food behind, and pick up towels on the way off the ship.

The Ferry Ride

After leaving the ship, our cruise excursion group was led to a pier to board a ferry. There is seating inside and out, washrooms, and a counter to buy drinks. It was a bumpy ride, but the 40 minutes went by quickly. If you are prone to seasickness, try to sit outside or take some anti-nauseau medication before you head out. Once we arrived on Virgin Gorda, we were loaded onto Safari buses for a short ride to the Top of the Baths.

Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

We had a couple of tour guides with the group. They led us along the trail, we were able to walk at our own pace, and we had time to stop and take photos.

There are signs along the way pointing out photo spots.

Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

You can see the sand on the rocks here that could be a little slippery.

Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

At the end of the trail, before walking through the caverns at the Baths, we arrived at a secluded beach. The water was beautiful and warm, and it was just our group on the beach. I think that it was empty because it was in the afternoon. I would guess it is busier in the morning.

baths tour tortola

As you can see it wasn’t very busy with just our group.

Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

We spent about 30 minutes at the beach before we headed toward the caves.

Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

There was a little bit more climbing during the next part of the toouring. You do climb down a short ladder to climb down and some ropes to hold onto on your way through the boulders. Nothing too strenuous or difficult.

baths tour tortola

As you can see, there are many great photo stops along the trail. The highlight is a large cavernous area known as the Catherdral. The light coming through the rocks was beautiful.

The Cathedral

The Cathedral Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

The water isn’t very deep in this section. It came up to around our knees. Once you reach the Cathedral, there is no more climbing up and down. The path from there heads out to another beach. This beach was a little busier than the last one.

Disney Cruise excursion Virgin Gorda the Baths

There is a lunch counter with bar service where you can get snacks and drinks at the beach and bathrooms and outdoor showers to wash off the sand. The tour guides started to round everyone up after about 30 to 40 minutes. From there, we climbed back up to the Top of the Baths to get back on the safari buses to return to the ferry. A tip I would give is to head up as soon as they start to round up everyone. I was nervous about getting left behind and missing the ferry, lol! The tour excursion was due to get back close to the all onboard time.

The ferry ride back was uneventful. The crew handed out drinks; if I remember correctly, there was water and fruit punch available.

Final Thoughts

We enjoyed the excursion. It was well-run, and I thought the price was good. I am glad we chose the shorter excursion. The amount of time we spent at the Baths was just right, we didn’t feel rushed, and we had enough time to see and do everything we wanted. I would recommend the excursion if you haven’t been and you are comfortable with light hiking and some climbing up and down from large boulders.

You can go to the Baths on your own. There is a public ferry that will take you to Virgin Gorda, and you can catch a taxi to the Baths. I didn’t feel comfortable going on our own, especially with a ferry and another island involved. Speedy’s offers tickets for a round-trip ferry with a taxi to the Baths for $28. It is a significant saving over the Disney excursion. If youy are comfortable going on your own, it is a good option.

Sign up for our newsletter to find out which excursion we did in St Thomas. You will also get the latest Disney news , like what you can expect on the Silver Anniversary at Sea cruises and the latest discounts.

Our BVI Power Boat Charter Reviews

Made our whole vacation! Couldn't have wished for a better trip.

We had the absolute best time on nautigal with rosie and phil - i couldn't recommend them more.

We will be back for sure!!!

Charlotte - May 2023

BVI Boat Tour 4th January 2023

This was by far our favorite excursion! Our kids (20 and 18) had the best time too. The Snorkeling was the most gorgeous we have ever seen. Our daughter said it reminded her of the Great Barrier Reef. Phil bringing us through caves and tunnels made it extra exciting. We stopped at Willy T’s and Pirate Cove so our 5 hrs were packed full of fun. Rosie is efficient with communication and a joy to be around. They are also professional and punctual! Highly recommend!!! Can’t wait to stay on the Island next time and have them show us more!! Thanks for a great day!!

The Most Perfect End to the Year 31st December 2022

Rosie and Phil are absolute gems We took a whole day tour with them and they went above and beyond Their knowledge of the area was second to none It was the last day of the year and for us 2022 ended in the most magical way. Highly highly recommended

Soggy Dollar & Snorkeling - 14 January 2023

What a great way to spend our time in the BVI! Capt Phil was right on time with pick up and drop off. Boat was clean, cooler was full of refreshments for the day, and Capt. Phil was full of great, fun history of the areas we traveled. Trip was totally customizable by us, and modified several times during our time because we were having a blast! I would, will, use them again next time we’re fortunate to be back in the beautiful BVI’s!

A definite must!

We had the most incredible day with Captain Phil and Rosie.  They catered to all our needs and were extremely hospitable.  Phil was a hoot and had many stories to tell about the islands amongst other things, and Rosie served the best Painkillers!  We would definitely recommend them for a fun filled day whether you just want to bar hop, or swim and snorkel, we did a bit of both around the Baths, Cooper, Norman Island and the caves, and had a few drinks to finish on the Willy T.  It was the best day of our vacation.    NOV 2022
