The Obama Portraits Tour

tour graphic

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery will extend “The Obama Portraits Tour” through October. The original five-city tour featuring the portraits of former President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama by artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald, respectively, will incorporate two additional cities with presentations at the de Young Museum in San Francisco (June 18–Aug. 14) and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Sept. 3–Oct. 30). The paintings will return on view in Washington, D.C., with celebrations at the Portrait Gallery in early November.

Unveiled in 2018, the Portrait Gallery’s commissioned portraits of the Obamas have garnered international attention. Initiated by popular demand from museums across the country and the Portrait Gallery’s mission to broaden discussions on portraiture, “The Obama Portraits Tour” commenced in Chicago, June 18, 2021, where it consistently broke daily attendance records for the Art Institute of Chicago before traveling to the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

“The very presentation of ‘The Obama Portraits Tour’ and the collaboration of eight premier institutions—the Portrait Gallery included—amidst a global pandemic speaks to the power of portraiture to bring audiences together,” said Kim Sajet, director of the National Portrait Gallery. “We look forward to further engaging West Coast audiences with the tour’s presentation at the de Young Museum, and exploring these contemporary paintings in the context of Boston’s longstanding tradition of portraiture during their time at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston."

Tour schedule:

  • The Art Institute of Chicago—June 18 to August 15, 2021
  • Brooklyn Museum—August 27 to October 24, 2021
  • Los Angeles County Museum of Art—November 7, 2021 to January 2, 2022
  • High Art Museum, Atlanta—January 14 to March 20, 2022
  • The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston—April 3 to May 30, 2022
  • de Young Museum, San Francisco—June 18 to August 14, 2022
  • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston—September 3 to October 30, 2022

The paintings were commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery and revealed in a special unveiling ceremony Feb. 12, 2018, in the presence of President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama and the artists. Wiley and Sherald are the first African American artists selected for the National Portrait Gallery’s official portraits of a President or First Lady. “The Obama Portraits Tour” is accompanied by The Obama Portraits book published in partnership with Princeton University Press and is overseen by the National Portrait Gallery’s team of art historians: Kim Sajet, director; Rhea Combs, director of curatorial affairs; Dorothy Moss, curator of painting and sculpture; and Taína Caragol, curator of painting, sculpture and Latino art and history.

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery recognizes the lead donors to the Obama portraits: Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg; Judith Kern and Kent Whealy; Tommie L. Pegues and Donald A. Capoccia; Clarence, DeLoise and Brenda Gaines; The Stoneridge Fund of Amy and Marc Meadows; Robert E. Meyerhoff and Rheda Becker; and Catherine and Michael Podell.

The Obama Portraits Tour is organized by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Support for the national tour has been generously provided by Bank of America.

Michelle Obama announces six-city book tour for 'The Light We Carry'

Former First Lady Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama plans a six-city tour this fall in support of her new book , “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times,” beginning mid-November in Washington. D.C. and ending a month later in Los Angeles.

“I’m looking forward to making some new connections — and of course, seeing some familiar faces from the last tour,” the former first lady said in a joint statement Wednesday released through her publisher, Crown, and tour promoter Live Nation.

“This book means so much to me — it’s a collection of perspectives and practices I’ve used to keep me afloat amid uncertainty. On this tour, I’ll be sharing some personal stories and lessons that have helped me along my path, and I can’t wait to tell you more.”

Obama will open at the Warner Theatre in Washington on Nov. 15, the publication date for her book. She will then travel to Philadelphia’s The Met, Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, the Chicago Theatre and San Francisco’s Masonic, before closing at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.

The venues have seating capacities ranging roughly from 2,000-6,500. The settings are far bigger than for most book events, but smaller than Obama’s stops on the first leg of her tour for the 2018 memoir “Becoming,” when she appeared at the United Center in Chicago and other arenas holding 15,000 or more.

“ Becoming ” was a near-instant million seller and went on to sell more than 17 million copies worldwide, making it the most popular book in modern times written by a former White House resident.

As with “Becoming,” Obama will speak at each city with guest moderators, to be announced later. Oprah Winfrey, Tracee Ellis Ross and Sarah Jessica Parker were among those who joined her for “Becoming.” In partnership with Live Nation, Obama will also set aside tickets at each venue for a select number of community members.

The acclaimed portraits of President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama come to the MFA on the final stop of their national tour

Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of President Barack Obama and Amy Sherald’s portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama have become iconic since the moment they were unveiled in 2018. A striking departure from earlier presidential portraits and images of first ladies, the two paintings have inspired unprecedented responses from the public.

Wiley and Sherald are the first African Americans commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery to create official portraits of a president and first lady. Their distinctive artistic visions are rooted in the tradition of American portraiture but committed to making space for people of color. Through their portraits, which are at once extraordinary and approachable, audiences can see themselves in President Obama and the former First Lady.

The seventh and final stop on a US tour that began in June 2021, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is thrilled to offer audiences in New England and throughout the world a chance to experience in person these works of art exploring power, identity, and legacy throughout history.

“The Obama Portraits Tour” is expected to reach millions of people who might not otherwise have an opportunity to view these remarkable paintings. Previous stops include the Art Institute of Chicago, Brooklyn Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and de Young Museum, San Francisco.

Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama stand next to their newly unveiled portraits during a ceremony at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery on Feb. 12, 2018. The portraits are set to go on a yearlong tour to five cities in June of 2021.

The National Portrait Gallery unveiled its official portraits of Michelle and Barack Obama nearly two years ago. Since then, the gallery reports that attendance has nearly doubled.

Next summer, the portraits will hit the road to reach an even wider audience.

Behind The Obama Portraits: Artists Put Their Own Spin On A Presidential Tradition

In Washington, D.C., dozens of people line up behind velvet ropes every day to admire artist Kehinde Wiley's interpretation of the former president. It features Obama sitting at the edge of a wooden chair, surrounded by lush foliage. Pink and white flowers are dispersed across the canvas.

"I think that it demonstrates the one drop of color that we've had in our 45 presidents, which is significant in its own way," says Michael R. Jackson, one of many visitors at the gallery on a recent afternoon.

Upstairs, near 20th century figures such as Toni Morrison and LL Cool J, the portrait Amy Sherald painted of Michelle Obama is displayed behind its own ropes. The former first lady poses against a pastel blue background, wearing a geometric dress of pink, yellow, black and white.

Kim Sajet, director of the National Portrait Gallery, explains that the ropes and extra security framing the portraits are partially to control the crowds that gather, but also to provide an opportunity for people to take photos in front of the paintings without interruptions.

Amy Sherald's painting of Michelle Obama is displayed behind its own ropes.

She credits Wiley and Sherald's artistic vision for much of the popularity of the pictures, which are a departure from some of the more conventional presidential portraits of the past.

"Portraiture used to be seen as this old-fashioned, fuddy-duddy, really for dead white people kind of way of painting," she says. "And it's just not true, and they've completely changed that and put it on its head."

Sajet says she began receiving calls from curators at other museums shortly after the unveiling, asking for an opportunity to host the artworks temporarily. Now five cities have been selected for the yearlong tour that kicks off in June of next year: Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Houston.

The Art Institute of Chicago will be the first stop.

The Art Institute of Chicago will be the first stop.

"We have such a strong connection to the Obamas," says Kati Murphy, the executive director of public affairs at the institute. "They had their first date at the institute. Michelle Obama used to come to the museum as a kid with her family."

Each city will host the portraits for roughly two months. And because admission is free at the National Portrait Gallery, Sajet says she's working with each museum to bring costs down and give as many people as possible a chance to see them in person — especially students and young children.

Two years ago, a photo of then 2-year-old Parker Curry staring up at the Michelle Obama portrait in awe went viral . Curry later got the opportunity to meet the former first lady and even had a children's book about the experience published.

That's what drew Barbara Whitman to the gallery on a recent visit from New York.

"My takeaway from it is they both are such modern portraits and they really capture the time — the modern spirit of that presidency and how they took us to a new place," she says. "Hopefully we can continue going to new places."

The Obama portraits are not the first to go on tour, but Sajet still says there's something unique about their impact. Attendance at the National Portrait Gallery has nearly doubled since their debut.

"[Barack Obama's portrait] is much larger than I expected, and the colors are very beautiful, much more than I expected, too," says visitor Mary Ruth. "People need to see it in person versus actually seeing it on a photo on their computer screen."

Former President Barack Obama, Biden’s old boss, also will be a featured guest as well as “other top surrogates and supporters,” a Biden campaign official told The Post.

In addition to their fundraiser appearance, Clooney, 63, and Roberts, 56, will be participating in a “contest” as part of the campaign, which will be blasted out on “social media, digital advertisements, and emails and text messages” to engage grassroots donors, according to the Biden re-election official.

Julia Roberts and George Clooney attend the premiere of Universal Pictures' "Ticket To Paradise" at Regency Village Theatre on October 17, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

The “Ticket to Paradise” stars, who have been appearing in movies together since the 2001 hit “Ocean’s Eleven,” will be pictured in the campaign materials to reach more voters.

Clooney endorsed Biden in 2020 and held a virtual fundraiser for him in July of that year.

“The Monuments Men” and TV “ER” actor had also supported Obama’s two terms and endorsed Hillary Clinton during her failed 2016 presidential run.

Obama, 62, had already been enlisted to campaign for Biden and joined him in March for a Radio City Music Hall fundraiser in Manhattan with former president Bill Clinton.

The three current and former presidents raised more than $25 million at the event, where tickets were running for up to $500,000 each.

The June mega fundraiser is intended to shore up more money for the Biden campaign and grow the “significant financial advantage” the president’s re-election camp has over 77-year-old former President Donald Trump, the Biden official added.

Biden’s campaign has enjoyed a larger pot of cash throughout the election cycle as Trump battles mounting legal bills over his four criminal indictments.

Biden’s April money numbers are not out yet, but at the end of March, the president’s team and the Democratic National Committee had $192 million cash on hand.

Barack Obama (L) and US President Joe Biden arrive for a campaign fundraising event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on March 28, 2024.

Last week, Biden’s West Coast swing brought in another $10 million for his campaign, according to a source familiar with the event.

As for Trump, the former president has personally hosted several large donor events, including a huge fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago in April that generated a record-breaking $50.5 million .

Trump’s team has acknowledged that they will likely not reach Biden’s level of cash but said their campaign strategy will still be enough to come out on top in November.
