You probably know Peru better for the Andes mountains that cradle Cusco and Machu Picchu and for the Amazon rainforest ’s mind-blowing biodiversity. But you might be surprised to know that there are many wonderful and impressive Peru beaches that are well worth a stop on your trip. Although it doesn’t have the white sands and bath temperature waters of places like the Caribbean, Peru has an amazingly diverse and beautiful coastline.

1. Punta Sal (Tumbes Region)

Punta Sal is Peru’s top beach when it comes to your typical beach retreat.  The sun shines here nearly every day of the year, and the beaches have incredibly fine sand. The warm waters are teeming with marine life thanks to warm and cold water currents. It is the most developed in regards to accommodations and has some of the most luxurious, all-inclusive beachfront resorts in the country. From your resort, you can enjoy a number of activities from beach volleyball to kayaking, water skiing to cruising around on a yacht.

2. Máncora (Piura Region)

Mancora in the last few years has seen a major transformation from a quiet fishing town to a major beach destination. Although most famous for its party scene and bohemian backpacker vibe, Mancora is becoming a global tourist attraction with a variety of activities. Travelers come from all over to enjoy the soft sand, the surf, and the seafood. There is a variety of accommodations from super cool hostels to romantic beach resorts.

3. Playa Roja (Ica, Region)

Located in the Paracas National Reserve next to the town of Paracas , Playa Roja has the most beautiful coastal landscape of all the beaches in Peru and is well worth a visit even though you can’t swim here. Nature enjoyed playing with its primary colors with the volcanic red sand, the mustard yellow desert cliffs, and the bright blue ocean. You’ll find an incredible number of marine species, such as sea lions, dolphins, Humboldt penguins, and blue-footed boobies. In the town of Paracas, you can enjoy swimming and kayaking, tours of the Ballestas Islands , as well as more adventurous activities such as hiking, dune buggying, and ATV tours.

4. Huanchaco (La Libertad Region)

Huanchaco was a fishing center and port for over a thousand years for the Chimú and Moche peoples; the archeological site of Chan Chan , the largest city of pre-Columbian South America is just down the road of the beach. To this day you can still find caballitos de totora , traditional fisherman’s rafts used in the area for over 3,000 years. Not only is this area a historical treasure, but also a surf haven. In 2012, Huanchaco gained status as a World Surfing Reserve. To top it all off, researchers also believe Huanchaco to be the birthplace of ceviche , Peru’s world-famous seafood dish.

5. Playa de la Mina (Ica Region)

Playa de la Mina is named after an old nearby coal mine but you would no longer be able to tell given how beautiful the beach is. Located just outside of the town of Paracas, it’s easy to get to with plenty of accommodation options nearby. Because it’s within the Paracas Natural Reserve, it’s well taken care of, equipped with informational plaques and a railed path leading down to the beach. It’s one of the best swimming spots in all of Paracas with its calm, bright aquamarine water. Yet it still has an off the beaten path feel with few tourists.

6. Tuquillo (Ancash Region)

Located about 4 hours north of Lima just off the Panamerican Highway is a beautiful circuit of beaches called Tuquillo. The waters are aquamarine-colored and crystal clear, and the beaches have soft sand surrounded by picturesque rock formations. Right next to Tuquillo is a small beach called La Pocita, which is called the pool of the Pacific Ocean due to its beautiful turquoise tidepools. Tuquillo beach has also been awarded an eco-beach prize (Premio Ecoplaya) for its cleanliness and conservation.

7. Chicama (La Libertad Region)

The humble town of Chicama is home to the not-so-humble longest left-breaking waves in the world. Legend has it that a Hawaiian surfer saw the waves from a plane and later wrote to some Peruvian friends to help him locate it. On a good day with 6-foot-plus swells, surfers can expect to ride the wave for over a mile. The local surf resort even has a towback service so you don’t have to paddle or hike back up the beach to catch your next wave. Despite such great surf, the town remains small and unassuming with simple accommodations for surfers.

8. Las Pocitas (Piura Region)

Playa Las Pocitas is known as Máncora Chico, or Little Mancora. Located just down the way, it’s much more tranquil than its big, party town brother. Pools of oceanfront hotels look out onto a row of picturesque palm trees and a dark turquoise sea. You’re sure to have a peaceful stay in a lounge chair or shaded beach bed listening to the waves.

9. Cerro Azul (Lima Region)

Cerro Azul may sound familiar to all you Beach Boys fans out there. That’s because the band name drops this beach in their 1962 song “Surfin’ Safari.” Although you’ll still see surfers “angling in Laguna in Cerro Azul,” this beach also draws plenty of families looking to hang out on the shore under colorful beach umbrellas. Those looking to be more active can hike up the cerro at the end of the beach and check out the El Fraile (The Monk) rock formation. Cerro Azul is only a couple of hours drive south of Lima .

10. Cabo Blanco (Piura Region)

“He always thought of the sea as ‘la mar’ which is what people call her in Spanish when they love her.” Cabo Blanco was already well known in the 1950s and 60s for incredible sport fishing, luring the likes of Ernest Hemingway who later made it the setting of his novel The Old Man and the Sea. Nowadays you won’t find the giant marlin of those decades, but the beach has become an international destination for surfers drawn to its powerful left surf break.

11. Camaná (Arequipa Region)

Camaná is the most popular beach for Arequipeños , or residents of the city of Arequipa , and for good reason. It is considered the cleanest beach in all of Peru and has calm waters perfect for relaxing and splashing around. Here you’ll find some phenomenal seafood, including the typical arequipeño dish chupe de camarones , an intensely flavorful shrimp soup. There are also some neat archeological sites nearby, including the pre-Inca cemetery Cerro Mil Hojas and the Quilca petroglyphs.

12. Vichayito (Piura Region)

Vichayito is another chill little beach south of Mancora. During the summer season, it’s the perfect swimming spot since its shores are virtually rockless. And during the off-season when the winds pick up it transforms into a kite and windsurfing hot spot. In between surf sessions, you can relax while sunbathing or in a lounge chair under an aesthetic straw beach umbrella.

13. Asia (Lima Region)

Asia is one of the most frequented Lima beaches for weekend getaways from the city, at only an hour’s drive south. Many limeños , or Lima residents, have summer homes there or rent for a weekend or even a week or two for summer vacation. The beaches have been heavily developed so that there is truly something for everyone. You can hang out at the beach, go shopping at one of the many malls and boutiques, dine at nice restaurants, go to the movies, party at fancy clubs, or even go golfing. Be aware that the water is pretty chilly here so mixing up your activities is probably the way to go.

14. Los Órganos (Piura Region)

Los Órganos is an up-and-coming tourist beach for those looking for nice sand and tranquility. You can grab yourself a private little beachfront bungalow surrounded by palm trees and enjoy some sand and sun all year round. There are also a few surf points for those who want to earn their downtime. The town may not have much going on, but it will cover your basic necessities for places to stay, food, and banks.

15. Costa Verde (Lima Region)

The best place to look out over the ocean and catch the sunset in Lima is the Malecón , a park that runs along the city’s cliffside. However, if you’re looking to get up close and personal with the Pacific waves, you can venture down to the beach below. The Costa Verde beaches aren’t much to look at and parts are very rocky, but there are some incredible spots for surfing. The beaches in Miraflores and Barranco both have shopping centers and restaurants, including Rosa Nautica at the end of a pier. There is also the Chorrillos district with its local fish market, colorful little fishing boats, and pelicans waiting for fishermen to drop some of their catch.

16. Pimentel (Lambayeque Region)

Just seven miles away from the city of Chiclayo, Pimentel is a modern beach with plenty of convenient infrastructure for tourists. In the 1920s, it was a major port town and the end of a railway line for sugar production and shipping, the remnants of which you can still see on the pier. You can walk along the boardwalk, enjoy ceviche at a beachfront restaurant, and even take a ride on a caballito de totora , a traditional pre-Columbian fishing raft.

17. Zorritos (Tumbes Region)

Zorritos first became a popular beach for the aristocracy from the nearby city of Tumbes during an oil boom off its shore. Although the oil business there is no more, visitors can still see the perforation platforms way out in the water. The beach is now frequented mostly by locals as well as some tourists, with a handful of nice little hotels and restaurants in the area. You can even take a scuba diving tour around the oil platforms to see how the structures have been taken over by marine life.

18. Lobitos (Piura Region)

Lobitos once was a happening port town, welcoming cruise ships from Europe, as well as serving as a military base. Today, in comparison to nearby Mancora and Cabo Blanco, Lobitos looks a bit derelict with its abandoned buildings and sparsely populated beach. However, this is a prime spot for surfers. The space is much more open for swells than Mancora and Cabo Blanco so you’ll have a lot more waves to ride, especially if you’re looking for left handed ones.

19. Punta Hermosa (Lima Region)

Punta Hermosa is on its way to becoming a newer version of Asia. The beaches here have been developed in recent years to have many of the same luxuries, such as accommodations, restaurants, and nightclubs. Although still not quite as ritzy as Asia, it’s at least a more affordable option for a beach weekend. Plus, it’s closer to Lima at only a half-hour drive (depending on traffic) south of the city.

20. La Punta (Callao Region)

Callao is known as a very industrial city just north of Lima. This is where you’ll find the airport as well as the port where both shipments and cruise ships come in. However, there is a unique little spot right at the tip of the city, conveniently called La Punta, in one of the few ritzy neighbors. Instead of sand, it is completely covered with smoothed stones the size of your palm. It may take a few minutes to get yourself settled, but once you do you get to enjoy a hot massage stone-type bed. You can also watch the sunset from a retro-looking glass viewpoint or visit the historical Real Felipe Fortress.

As you can see, there is a lot more to Peru than just Cusco and Machu Picchu—Peru has quite a variety of beaches, too! Although both locations are unique in and of themselves, Peru’s desert coastline also has a lot to offer to travelers. Since Peru is so big, it’s not easy to nail down the best time to visit its beaches. That’s because all the beaches on our list are dotted along the country’s extended coastline. However, we can still give a basic guide on when to go to Peru – and since it’s almost always sunny, there’s never really a bad time to visit.

The sea is mostly cold, except for the beaches in the far north of the country, where the El Niño equatorial currents warm the waters. The beaches here are the best beaches in Peru for swimming, and December to March is when the water will be at its warmest.

Further down the coast, the water gets colder. The beaches close to Lima are also good from December to March. Pretty much at any point during the rest of the year, the sea will be too cold to swim in, and you’ll be lucky if the sun comes out during these times!

Miraflores is one of the most exclusive districts in Lima, and its a hit with backpackers in Peru . As a result, its beach has plenty surrounding it to keep you entertained. This beach can get quite cold, so you might need a wetsuit if you’re going in!

Previously owned by a British oil company, Lobitos is lined with former expats’ houses. It’s also home to the first cinema in South America – in an area where Peruvians weren’t actually allowed. The oil rigs off the coast are a reminder of the past but the oil company has since left and it’s been colonised by surfers… who are a bit friendlier. Lobitos is one of the best beaches in Peru to catch waves, but learning about the local area’s history is interesting too.

All your sites are beautiful but I prefer Cerro Azul out of season(May – Dec) when its quiet and peaceful. Long walks on empty beaches, a cliff face teeming with bird life and an archeological site adjacent to explore also. Some excellent ceviche restaurants too and a friendly population.

The aquamarine water rippling over soft, golden-white sand is hard to beat here, as are the little pools that form among the rocks at low tide, which make the perfect, tiny marine ecosystems for children to explore.

2. Playa Roja

Playa Roja, or red beach, gets its name from the red sand made from the erosion of ancient, solidified lava in the area, which beautifully contrasts with the blue sea and the dramatic rocks jutting from the ocean just offshore.

In many places, the beach is ringed by tall, jagged cliffs that give the area a fascinating, almost surreal feeling, like you’ve been teleported to another world.

Surrounded by a protected national reserve, Playa Roja’s beauty should remain unchanged for generations to come.

The area abounds with wildlife too, but to get the most out of the spread out attractions, it’s best to hire a local guide.

Boasting more sunny days per year than Arizona, Mancora is another popular spot for surfers and pleasure seekers of all types.

The Pan-American Highway runs straight through town, making it easily accessible and a favorite getaway for those who don’t want to take planes, trains, and helicopters to get to a decent beach.

Considering its population of only 8,000, it has a large number of restaurants, resorts and hotels.

5. Punta Sal

Perhaps the quintessential beach, Punta Sal is located on the Pacific coast in northern Peru.

6. Playa de la Mina

Ringed by a magnificent, stratified rock formation jutting from the sea and coiling behind the beach, Playa de la Mina will take your breath away from the moment you see it.

Depending on when you come, it could be empty or overcrowded.

Its popularity with tourists during the beach season can lead to unpleasant congestion, but you may have the place to yourself at other times of the year.

The water is very clear but can be cold too, especially in non-summer months.

7. Cabo Blanco

Sadly, many of the big marlin that made Cabo famous in the ’50s and ’60s are gone, but the beautiful beaches, gnarly rock cliffs, blue sea, and sky are just like they were in Hemingway’s day.

You won’t see many old men struggling with massive fish, but you’ll see lots of surfers and scenery second to none.

8. Huanchaco

Known as the birthplace of the fresh seafood dish ‘ceviche,’ Huanchaco is a beloved beach in the city of Trujillo.

Named a World Surfing Reserve Site in 2012, it draws surfers from near and far.

Once a quiet fishing town, Huanchaco is becoming a destination due to its laid-back vibe, wonderful beaches and proximity to the Chan Chan ancient ruins – one of the largest cities in pre-Colombian South America.

The archeological site is only three miles from Trujillo, and guided tours can be booked from the agents in town.

9. Miraflores

Let’s face it, the term ‘urban beach’ sounds a bit strange, like jumbo shrimp or civil war.

If you step back for a moment though, you may see that beaches like Miraflores are really the best of both worlds.

Below high, rocky cliffs adjacent to Lima’s ritzy downtown, you’ll not only have access to sun, sand, and surf but beautiful parks, wonderful restaurants, and the city’s fascinating museums and architecture as well.

There aren’t many places like it, where you can cram so many diverse and enjoyable activities into one day.

There’s a boardwalk, surfing and even paragliding too.

10. Paracas National Reserve

‘Where the mountains meet the sea,’ would be a great way to describe the beaches in Paracas National Reserve.

Framed by the desert and majestic Andes Mountains, the beaches here are remote and breathtaking.

Don’t expect to find a crowd or pesky vendors, as you’ll need to hoof-it to many of these unnamed beaches.

Once you’ve soaked up all the sun, surf and serenity you can handle, head to into Paracas and book a boat tour to the Ballestas Island Bird Sanctuary.

Though you can’t actually enter the island, the scenery from the boat will be more than sufficient.

11. Los Organos

Famous for its slow pace, marine life and surfing, the town of Los Organos is a good choice for those looking to decompress.

Punta Veleros is its most popular beach, but there are others nearby that are just as beautiful.

Hang around the docks and watch the local fisherman bring in their catch – most of which will end up in the quaint town’s family restaurants, and if you’re lucky, on your dinner plate.

Whale watching tours can be booked from town and sea turtles are pretty common too.

12. Paita District

The Paita District is in the northwest corner of Peru, not far from its border with Ecuador.

Stroll along deserted stretches of white sand, swim in seas that are 24 degrees all year round or enjoy some of the world’s best surfing competitions. Here are the best beaches in Peru to get you dreaming about your next South American adventure.

10. Miraflores [SEE MAP]

As a built-up, urban beach, Miraflores might not be the tropical paradise you have in mind when you imagine the best beaches in Peru, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth your time. The City Beach in Miraflores is situated in the affluent downtown area of the bustling Peruvian capital city, Lima .

Being part of the urban sprawl of a capital city means easy access to the city center, but enough space and fresh air that you feel like you have time to relax.

The beach is edged with high-rise apartment blocks, which sit on the edge of rugged cliffs coated in lush grass, complete with fantastic views of the ocean along the ‘Costa Verde’. It’s a popular spot for surfers who are attracted by the excellent surf, as well as paragliders who float dreamily over the sands. Nowadays, the search for huge fish has been overtaken by the hunt for big waves, as surfers are drawn to the area for its excellent surfing opportunities. Not a spot for beginners, the waves here are epically big.

The famously large ‘Peruvian Pipe’ is a challenge for the many surfers who descend on the beach and is a spectacle to watch. The beach itself is all soft sands bordered by craggy rocks that reflect in the deep blue of the sea.

This laid-back beach is the place to head if you’re a keen surfer. Huanchaco has grown from a humble fishing town with a pretty beach to being a spot on the traveling map which is fast becoming a destination in its own right. Visitors often stop off en-route to exploring the many historical sites in the area, and relax on the long stretch of golden sand.

The beach has built up a reputation for its many watersports, and is well known for an unusual style of fishing practiced by the local fisherman. Caballos de totora, or ‘little reed horses,’ are woven boats which the fishermen ride over the waves in order to catch hauls of fish.

Nowadays, surfboards are a more common sight than the reed horses, but it is still possible to see the tradition being carried out across the waves.

All surfers -from amateur to pro – should definitely make their way to this picture-perfect Peruvian beach. Labelled the best surf spot in Peru, the waves here are simply fantastic, thanks to a confluence of currents, which is why there are many surf schools in the area. The chilled-out surfing vibes are strong in the town, which was once in the hands of a British oil company.

The relics of the oil industry still lie scattered across the surrounding landscape – rigs remain out at sea and old buildings lie abandoned close to the beach. Rather than detracting from the attractiveness of the beach, the aftermath of the British influence has added a strange twist to the beach and town, with only the interesting architecture remaining.

Big, old, British buildings sit on the coast overlooking the sea – some now lived in by locals, others left abandoned – a few of them are now surf hostels!

Just south of Mancora beach, about 10 minutes along the road, is the lesser known, pretty little Las Pocitas – one of the most attractive beaches in Peru. Translating as ‘Little Wells,’ the beach takes its name from the pools of water that appear inside craters in the rocks at low tide – perfect for young children to splash around and play in.

Edged with palms and beautiful, natural vegetation, the atmosphere is quiet, peaceful and ideal for ambient afternoons spent frolicking in the surf.

The water on the Pacific beaches of Peru is not 24 degrees. It is much colder than that. If the temperatures were warmer they would not be so empty. Actually for most of the year average temperature is way less than 20 degrees.

Lima is one of the less well-known cities in the Americas, so it helps to know what to expect. Here are some tips for planning a trip.

1. Be prepared for gray skies

This is a heads up for those who suffer from seasonal mood swings in drab weather – don't assume this coastal Latin American capital is the land of sunshine.

For every month of the year outside of Peru’s summer season (January to March), the skies over Lima are consistently gray. This can be a huge disappointment for unsuspecting visitors – and can wear down even those prepared for this quirk of the Lima weather.

Keep this in mind when planning the timing of a trip to Lima . On the plus side, the Peruvian capital is dry nearly all year round and you can stay active on the malecón (waterfront esplanade) to keep your energy levels and mood up.

If you are in dire need of Vitamin D, consider a day trip down south to Pachacamac or a weekend trip to Reserva Nacional de Paracas where the sun is more likely to make an appearance.

2. Download a rideshare app for easy trips around Lima

Lima sprawls over numerous widely-spread districts, so you may spend a good chunk of time commuting. Though there are a handful of cheap and accessible ways to get around Lima, your best bet is to rely on a respectable rideshare app such as Uber or Cabify .

Even if you have a decent level of Spanish or are traveling in a group, the risk of theft or getting scammed when taking an unmarked taxi off the street in Lima is not worth the few soles (Peru’s official currency) difference in price.

3. Base yourself in a district that suits your interests in Lima

There are so many great neighborhoods in Lima , each with its own unique personality and attributes, and with the sprawling nature of the city, it pays to stay close to the things you want to see.

Do a bit of research to discover the best neighborhood in Lima for you – some areas are better for people traveling with children, while others appeal to travelers looking to keep to a budget or those seeking a taste of local nightlife.

Most tourists stay in the hip district of Barranco or centrally-located Miraflores, and for good reason. But less-visited districts such as Pueblo Libre or Magdalena del Mar can also woo you with their top museums and authentic vibe.

4. Consider distance and traffic when organizing your day-to-day itinerary

Sprawling across more than 1000 sq miles, Lima is the largest city in Peru and one of the five most populous cities in South America. While many of the most touristed districts are close neighbors, some of the best things to do and see in Lima are on opposite sides of the city.

Don’t waste a chunk of your visit to Lima commuting. Instead, invest a bit of pre-travel time in mapping out what each district has to offer, so you can plan your days based on activities and sights that are close to one another.

For example, it's a good idea to pair gallery visits in Barranco with lunch or dinner in a Miraflores restaurant or a trip to Pueblo Libre’s incredibly thorough and informative Museo Larco with a drink at the same district’s famed Queirolo pisco bar.

5. Don’t haggle excessively and keep cash handy

Speaking of respect for local culture, let’s talk about haggling. Many tour agencies encourage travelers to bargain for better prices, reassuring them that it is simply part of the Peruvian culture.

However, while it is common in Lima markets to see vendors and buyers discussing a better price, there is a point where arguing hard for a cheaper price becomes disrespectful.

Many of the artisans in Lima come from the highlands or tropical lowlands – distant regions where it is difficult to earn a steady income and the quality of life is much lower than in the cities and most countries tourists come from.

Unless you can be sure that the vendor is charging an extortionate amount, consider settling for a slightly higher than the locals price to help support local families.

Also keep in mind that many small businesses, as well as independent artisans, will only accept cash and they may not have change, so carry plenty of small bills.

6. Learn a few basic Spanish words and phrases for easier travels

A quick search on Facebook will turn up links to numerous groups of English-speaking expats who fell in love with Peru and set up a base in Lima, but the vast majority of locals do not speak fluent English.

Thankfully, rideshare apps do away with the need to give detailed directions to taxi drivers, and purchases in markets can often be negotiated with just some creative gesturing.

However, to fit in, and reduce the chances of being scammed, learning a few phrases in Spanish is a good way to express your respect for locals and be less of an outsider in this strongly Spanish-speaking city.

Many locals will give a passing greeting of qué tal (how are you?) or buen dia (good day), and doing so yourself will put a smile on people's faces.

Knowing your numbers is also helpful when it comes to paying a fair price – prices may be hiked for those who only speak English.

7. Trust your gut instinct when eating street food

Picarones (squash and sweet potato fried donuts), anticuchos (skewered beef heart), emoliente (a thick herbal drink served piping hot) – the list of tempting street food options in Lima goes on and on.

And while the foods served on the sidewalks of Lima provide a delicious, budget-friendly way to sample the flavors of Peru , your stomach may not be on board with the lax (sometimes non-existent) sanitary standards employed by street vendors. 

When choosing whether to eat from a street food stall, go with your instincts. Back home, you wouldn’t eat from a place that has more flies than customers, or from a cook who doesn't wash their hands or use gloves for food prep, so don’t risk it in Lima.

Another important rule of thumb for newcomers is to satiate your craving for ceviche in a proper restaurant; uncooked fish on the street is a fast track to a stomach bug.

8. Follow big-city safety precautions to avoid theft in Lima

Lima is a fairly safe destination for tourists when it comes to serious crime – but that doesn’t mean it's a good idea to walk around town at dusk with your camera or a shiny new phone on display. As with any large city, opportunistic crime, especially theft, is prevalent in Lima.

To avoid losing a precious valuable item, be street smart and aware of your immediate environment. Don’t leave your purse, bag or phone in the seat next to you while riding in a taxi or a public bus, and avoid walking around with your wallet on obvious display in your back pocket.

Phone snatching in the street is another problem. Don't be too shy to ask for directions or to use a paper map as opposed to carrying your phone in front of you as a digital map, especially in neighborhoods less frequented by tourists. 

9. Tips for staying safe as a solo woman in Lima

Lima is generally safe for female solo travelers. Be cautious (as, unfortunately, we always have to be) of eager offers of rides from drivers of unmarked taxis or free rounds of drinks at the bar, and avoid walking alone at night, particularly in quiet parts of town.

For safety in numbers, find a like-minded traveler from your hostel (or reach out to expat residents on Facebook groups) to join you on outings.
