What a fantastic way to enjoy our craft beer and beverage scene and save money…even if you’re just visiting the WNY area for a short time!

As always, we are truly proud to support our local craft beer and beverage scene and encourage others to visit and experience the amazing people and businesses all across WNY!

Thanks for stopping by and checking out the Pass! We can’t wait to see you out on the Trail! 🍻

In January of 2019 we formed an idea centered around celebrating the craft beer scene in the Buffalo and Rochester NY area. While we have several ideas of where to take the Beer Trail we have focused on photographing and posting the beers we’ve had along the way.  As we grow and develop new ideas, we will post them on all of our feeds to let you know what’s happening! We’ve had so much fun meeting some of the amazing individuals creating these beers!  Thank  you all for your time and willingness to talk about your craft...we truly appreciate your efforts!

Step inside the historic GLF silo’s and tour the home of Buffalo RiverWorks Brewing Co.

Take a tour of the world’s First silo brewery opened in an abandoned NY grain elevator!

Abandoned grain silos in Buffalo, New York have been given new life as a brewery. Buffalo RiverWorks recently opened the $2.2 million brewery as part of the revitalization of the city’s waterfront. Buffalo’s grain elevators have long been emblematic of the area but now could stand for a new era of innovation — both in brewing and architectural restoration.

Once part of the Wheeler-GLF grain elevator, the old silos now house the Buffalo RiverWorks brewery. RiverWorks employees transformed the silos into a brewery with the help of local architecture firm Abstract Architecture and engineering firm Kromac Design. They had to cut through rebar-reinforced concrete to create the space they needed, and also added a second floor inside. According to The Buffalo News, they had to carry out the work without plumbing or utilities.

General manager William Casale of the Pearl Street Family of Companies, which is behind the brewery, told The Buffalo News, “We were able to salvage these silos to create what we think is the first brewery built inside a silo in the world.”

** Brewery Tours are about 30min long. Close toed shoes REQUIRED (stairs are involved) **

Sip Your Way Through Buffalo

Buffalo’s rich industrial past is soaked in beer. In 1919, on the eve of Prohibition, Buffalo was home to twenty-nine breweries and featured more than 8,000 drinking establishments. But it wasn’t until the end of the 20th century that brewing returned to the city with the opening of  Flying Bison Brewing Company  and  Pearl Street Grill & Brewery . Today, the Buffalo area has nearly 50 craft breweries, including  Community Beer Works ,  Hamburg Brewing Company ,  Resurgence Brewing Company,   Big Ditch Brewing , and  42 North Brewing.

Oh and we hear that  wings  go PERFECT with beer.

5 MUST TRY BREWERIES IN BUFFALO, NY

  • March 30, 2020

AN INSIDERS GUIDE TO BUFFALO’S BEST BREWERIES

Buffalo, NY is home to a growing number of craft micro breweries and alcohol distillers. But if you’re visiting, you may not be sure where are the best places to check out. So on today’s blog we’re bringing you our Insiders Guide to Buffalo’s Best Breweries.

(Full disclosure: we lead food tours and history tours by bike, which bring you to many of the city’s best spots – on two wheels!)

Margaret St John’s House was one of Buffalo’s first bars

BUFFALO BREWING HISTORY 101

Buffalo and beer go hand in hand. The first brewery in Buffalo opened in 1811 in Black Rock by Joseph Webb. A year later, the entire city of Buffalo burned in the War of 1812. One of the only buildings saved was Margaret St John’s beloved bar. Much later, in the 1920s, Buffalo became a hotbed for The Mafia. Illegal booze run in from Canada through Buffalo’s West Side was a staple of the local economy.

Meanwhile, Buffalo’s large German population grew to master the craft. Due to Buffalo’s location on Lake Erie, Buffalo was the transportation and grain capital of the world. With that, came opportunity for grain-related industries and Buffalo’s breweries flourished.

Brands like Iroquois Brewery and Simon Pure Brewery have long faded but some buildings still remain. Many survived Prohibition by producing “near beer”.

The historic Iroquois Brewing Company on Pratt Street – a relic from Buffalo beer history

Many of these companies were forced out of existence by corporate pressures during consolidation in the 1960s. And for a while, things for the Buffalo brewing industry looked pretty dismal. But if you think that’s going to stop us, you don’t know Buffalo. Just check out this incredible map of Buffalo’s rich brewing history – past to present!

Map shows locations or approximate locations of Buffalo breweries, malt houses, distilleries, wineries, cider houses, and meaderies from 1828 to the present. Some breweries had on-site malt houses (i.e. Beck, Lang, Germania, etc.), so those were classified only under breweries to prevent duplication.

THE CRAFT ACT: BUFFALO BREWERIES ON THE RISE

In 2014, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed the craft beverage law (“The Craft Act”). This cut requirements placed on producers and eased restrictions on breweries in NY. He also gave over $3 million in economic support and tax incentives for brewers across the state. This has led to an emerging community of craft brewers in Buffalo, NY. Drawing on the city’s historical roots, there is boom of new distillers carrying on the tradition. Here are a few of our favorites.

Buffalo Distilling Company

BUFFALO DISTILLING COMPANY

Named after a distillery from the 1890s, Buffalo Distilling Company inhabits a building that manufactured and repaired carriages. They produce spirits under the moniker “One Foot Cock”. Be sure to try the Krupnik, a honey-based Polish liquor with long-standing roots in Buffalo. The drink is strong – but we highly recommend a bottle (or two) to go.

flying-bison-brewing.jpg

FLYING BISON BREWERY

Tim Herzog, owner of Flying Bison Brewery, named his bar after the two biggest industries in WNY in the 1950s: airplanes and brewing. Their microbrews often have an aviation theme: Dawn Patrol Gold, Aviator Red, and Blackbird Stout. You’ll also want to try their desert-themed beers including cannoli beer and one flavored with Paula’s doughnuts .

Gene-McCarthys_Buffalo_Beer.jpg

OLD FIRST WARD BREWERY

The Old First Ward Brewery is a little off the traveled tourist grid but is well worth visiting. Housed at Gene McCarthy’s Tavern, the bar dates back more than a century. Its roots are in Buffalo’s Irish community, many of whom worked as grain scoopers in Buffalo’s grain silos.

The bar was a gambling hall and had a strict no profanity policy back in the day. While neither applies these days, the bar serves some of the best local brews and wings in town (the Sheffield wing is a must).

Community_Beer_Works_Beer.jpg

COMMUNITY BEER WORKS

Community Beer Works is super passionate about Buffalo beer history. They also support the communities that connect the Buffalo area. They are well known for their philanthropy to local causes and for donating their spent grain to local farms. Check out their new tasting room on Buffalo’s burgeoning West Side and do good while enjoying some “damn good beer.

Belt-Line-Brewery-Beer-Buffalo-NY.jpg

BELTLINE BREWERY: BUFFALO’S NEWEST UP-AND-COMING DISTILLERY

Beltline Brewery is another new Buffalo brewery. They take inspiration from Buffalo’s “beltline” railroad system. Working hard as both a freight and commuter rail line, the beltline had 19 commuter stations supporting two dozen trains per day. Beltline Brewery has a new spacious tasting room in Larkinville, a perfect spot for summer nights and a cool beverage.

This article just skims the surface of our favorites. For more ideas of our rich brewing scene, check out Resurgence, Thin Man Brewery, and Froth Brewery. That’s not to mention standbys like Riverworks and Pearl Street Brewing. Before long, you’ll be extending your stay 🙂

Buffalo, NY: Where History, Wings, and Wonder Collide

W elcome to Buffalo, New York, a city with a rich history, vibrant culture, and an undeniable sense of community. Nestled on the eastern shores of Lake Erie, Buffalo has evolved from its humble beginnings as a small trading post into a bustling metropolis known for its industrial prowess, architectural marvels, and, of course, its mouthwatering cuisine. Let’s take a journey through the Queen City and explore what makes it a must-visit destination for travelers from near and far.

From Humble Beginnings to Bustling Hub

Buffalo’s story began in the early 19th century when it served as a crucial hub for trade and commerce along the Erie Canal. Constructed between 1817 and 1825, the Erie Canal connected the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean, revolutionizing transportation and turning Buffalo into a thriving boomtown. The city’s strategic location at the canal’s western terminus catapulted it into economic prominence, earning it the nickname “The Gateway to the West.”

Throughout the years, Buffalo experienced its fair share of ups and downs, from the heyday of the Industrial Revolution to economic challenges in the latter half of the 20th century. However, through resilience and revitalization efforts, Buffalo has emerged as a dynamic city with a bright future ahead.

The Canal’s Legacy: More Than Just Water

The Erie Canal remains a defining feature of Buffalo’s identity, serving as a reminder of its storied past. Today, visitors can explore the historic canal and its adjacent waterfront, where charming cobblestone streets, quaint boutiques, and lively restaurants await. When I last visited, we were able to see the construction of canal boat that was being built to commemorate the opening of the Erie Canal. Fascinating!

Take a leisurely stroll along the Buffalo Harbor and experience the bustling energy of Canalside, a vibrant entertainment district that hosts concerts, festivals, and outdoor activities year-round. Whether you’re taking a scenic boat tour or simply enjoying a picnic by the water, the Erie Canal offers endless opportunities for exploration and relaxation.

Culinary Delights: From Wings to Weck

Speaking of food, Buffalo takes its eats seriously. But let’s get one thing straight: Buffalo wings are not just chicken wings dipped in Frank’s Red Hot sauce (although that’s a classic, no doubt). Real Buffalo wings are deep-fried, then tossed in a fiery cayenne pepper sauce with a hint of butter. The result? Crispy perfection with a kick that’ll have you begging for more. Be sure to check out Anchor Bar, the home of the original Buffalo chicken wings. They are colossal, and sure didn’t disappoint!

But Buffalo’s culinary scene extends far beyond wings. Sink your teeth into a beef on weck, a local specialty featuring thinly sliced roast beef piled high on a kummelweck roll and topped with horseradish and au jus. Pair it with a side of crispy fries and wash it down with a locally brewed craft beer for the ultimate Buffalo dining experience.

Retail Therapy: Shop ‘Til You Drop

For those who love shopping, Buffalo offers an eclectic mix of boutiques, galleries, and specialty shops to explore. From trendy fashion boutiques in Elmwood Village to unique artisanal finds at the Broadway Market, there’s no shortage of treasures waiting to be discovered.

Head to the Buffalo Niagara region’s premier shopping destination, the Walden Galleria , for a one-stop shopping extravaganza featuring over 200 stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. Whether you’re hunting for the perfect souvenir or simply browsing for inspiration, Buffalo’s shopping scene has something for everyone.

Beyond Shopping and Wings: A Feast for the Senses

Buffalo isn’t just about shopping and wings (though those are pretty awesome reasons to visit). Here are a few more things to add to your itinerary:

  • USS The Sullivans: This historic Navy destroyer, now a museum ship, honors the crew who heroically fought during World War II.
  • Buffalo Naval Park: Set sail on a nautical adventure at the Buffalo Naval Park. Explore a collection of retired warships, including the legendary battleship USS Little Rock.
  • Buffalo Zoo: Get up close and personal with amazing creatures at the Buffalo Zoo. From majestic tigers to playful penguins, there’s something for everyone.
  • Albright-Knox Art Gallery: Immerse yourself in the world of art at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum , formerly known as the Albright–Knox Art Gallery. Their collection spans centuries and movements, featuring everything from Van Gogh to contemporary installations.
  • Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site: History buffs, rejoice! This is the exact spot where Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office as the 26th President of the United States.
  • Letchworth State Park: Escape the city and breathe in the fresh air at Letchworth State Park. Hike through dramatic gorges, kayak on the Genesee River, or simply relax and take in the breathtaking scenery.

Hidden Gems: Beyond the Tourist Trail

Of course, Buffalo’s got more to offer than just these big-ticket attractions. Here are a few hidden gems you won’t want to miss:

  • The Larkin Center: This architectural marvel was once a mail-order soap factory. Today, it’s a vibrant hub for art studios, galleries, and unique shops.
  • The Buffalo History Museum: Delve into Buffalo’s rich past at this museum. Explore exhibits on everything from the city’s industrial might to its vibrant cultural scene.
  • Anchor Bar : This unassuming tavern is the birthplace of the Buffalo wing! Grab a plate of the originals and soak in the historic atmosphere.
  • Shakespeare in Delaware Park: Pack a picnic basket and enjoy a free performance under the stars at Shakespeare in Delaware Park.

Buffalo’s Charm: More Than Meets the Eye

Buffalo might not be the first city that pops into your head when you think of vacation destinations, but trust me, it deserves a spot on your travel list . From its historical significance to its mouthwatering food scene and vibrant cultural offerings, Buffalo offers a unique and unforgettable experience. So, what are you waiting for?  Come discover the magic of Buffalo for yourself and see why this dynamic city continues to captivate hearts and minds around the world.
