Do Detox Foot Pads Really Work?

  • What Are They?
  • Do They Work?
  • Risks and Side Effects

Detox and the Body

Detox foot pads are an over-the-counter (OTC) product that claims to remove toxins from the body while you rest at night. The makers of these adhesive pads, which you stick to the bottom of your feet, also assert that they can improve various other medical conditions. These claims have never been proven, and the product is widely viewed as a scam.

This article will debunk some of the claims made by detox foot pad manufacturers and discuss the body’s natural methods of detoxifying itself.

Carolin Voelker / Getty Images

What Are Detox Foot Pads?

Detox foot pads are adhesive patches that are placed on the bottom of your feet before you go to bed at night.

The product is left in place while you sleep. It's claimed that ions in the pads draw toxins—like heavy metals—out of your body.

When you wake up in the morning, the pads are typically discolored and may be stained with a brown or blackish hue. The manufacturers of this product claim (incorrectly) that this is proof that harmful or toxic materials were effectively removed from your body.

Do Detox Foot Pads Work?

Contrary to the claims of their manufacturers, detox foot pads do not remove toxins from the body. There is no proof that they effectively treat any medical condition. The makers of this product have been fined and penalized by the FTC for these false assertions.

Many of the claims made by the makers of detox foot pads are both false and misleading. In fact, not only might this product be both a waste of money and time, but its ingredients can actually cause harmful side effects, as noted below.

Sale of Detox Foot Pads

In 2010, Kinoki, a manufacturer of detox foot pads, was penalized by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for falsely claiming that its product could detoxify the body and treat medical conditions. These supposed benefits were proven to be false and the company was barred from selling or advertising the patches.

Claims About Detox Foot Pads

In addition to drawing out toxins, claims by manufacturers of this product include that the foot pads are beneficial for other medical conditions.

For instance, Kinoki has asserted that its product is able to:

  • Decrease headaches and insomnia
  • Reduce the effects of depression
  • Treat arthritis
  • Lower high blood pressure
  • Treat diabetes
  • Eliminate parasites from the body
  • Treat a compromised immune system

Each of these claims is both false and misleading. To date, no research supports the use of foot pads to treat any medical condition, nor is there any proof that they detoxify the body.

Why Do Detox Foot Pads Change Color

Foot pad manufacturers often point to changes in the color of the patch as proof that toxins are being removed from the body. This claim, however, is also inaccurate.

The dark color that is often seen on these pads after use is actually a result of the wood vinegar that they are infused with.  When this substance is mixed with the perspiration from your foot, a color change occurs. In fact, the same blackish or brownish hue can also be seen if the patch is spritzed with tap water.

Risks and Side Effects From Detox Foot Pads

While they do not provide any actual benefits, detox foot pads are often viewed as being relatively harmless, but this is not necessarily the case. Most of the foot patches are infused with either wood or bamboo vinegar to provide the color changes while you wear them.

These substances contain pyroligneous acid, an ingredient that can cause a number of side effects, including localized burning or irritation of the skin. In addition, this acid can cause dizziness or difficulty breathing if it is inhaled.

Because of this, the use of these foot patches is not without risk.

While people spend large amounts of time and money trying to cleanse their bodies of toxins, in most cases, body cleansing is unnecessary. This is because your body has its own natural methods of removing harmful substances, as described below.

How the Body Detoxifies Naturally

There are two types of toxins found in the body:

  • Endotoxins are substances that are created as a byproduct during normal bodily functions. This includes things like lactic acid buildup after exercise or fecal matter production after digestion.
  • Exotoxins are toxic substances that are inhaled from the environment or consumed when you eat or drink.

No matter the type of toxin, your liver is designed to process and eliminate these toxins. It does this by filtering harmful substances from your bloodstream and converting them into waste products. These toxins may be chemical byproducts from activities like digestion or exercise. They may also be inhaled pollutants or substances in the food or liquids you ingest.

Your liver also transforms nutrients and medications into beneficial proteins. Keeping this organ healthy is the key to effectively detoxifying your body.

Signs and Symptoms of Poor Liver Function

There are several telltale signs that can indicate your liver is functioning inefficiently and not properly filtering out toxins. These include:

  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, indicating a bilirubin buildup)
  • Stomach pain or swelling
  • Swollen legs or ankles
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Bruising easily

Paying attention to the presence of these symptoms can help alert you to a potential problem with this organ. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to contact your healthcare provider to discuss any concerns you have about your liver.

How to Improve Liver Function Naturally

Instead of taking supplements or using detox foot pads, there are several steps that you can take to ensure that your liver is functioning effectively. These include:

  • Avoid excessive alcohol use
  • Maintain a healthy body weight
  • Avoid recreational drug use or unprotected sex with multiple partners (which may increase your risk of contracting hepatitis )
  • Get screened for liver disease if it runs in your family
  • Stay hydrated
  • Avoiding unsafe detox practices
  • Consult your healthcare provider before taking supplements

Detox foot pads are advertised as a natural way to remove toxins from the body as you sleep. They have been deemed useless and their manufacturers were penalized by the FTC for making deceptive health claims. The ingredients found in the patches may even be harmful.

Keeping your liver functioning effectively is the most effective way to naturally detoxify the body.

Travel + Leisure / David Hattan

Once you’ve figured out your next cold-weather travel destination and picked out all your outfits, it’s time to accessorize, and not just with your new favorite hat or scarf. The best foot warmers will keep you warm while walking through the woods or Nordic streets, or even at home if your heating system isn’t keeping up. This category covers everything from disposable packets to plug-in massage apparatuses, so read on for the best ways to keep your feet toasty no matter where you are.

Best Overall

Hotronic foot warmer xlp 2c.

Hotronic provides an extremely impressive 24 hours of heat that you can control from your phone.

The technical value means they're much more expensive than other options on our list.

Hotronic’s foot warmer insoles are not messing around. With a 6,000mAh capacity, they’ll last for up to 24 hours on the lowest heat setting before needing a recharge. You can choose from three heat settings, plus a fourth Power Boost if you need an extra blast. Switch between the settings using the buttons on the battery packs or with the companion app; the app also tells you how much charge they have left. When you do run out, the batteries recharge via USB, so as long as you’ve got a computer with ports available, you’ve got charge. Their main drawback is the price tag, especially if you aren’t heading outdoors that often. You also have to purchase the insoles themselves separately; this pack only includes insole covers, but they are easy to fit to any custom insoles you may already have.

The Details: Lithium ion battery | 4 settings | Up to 118 degrees F | Up to 24 hours

Best Single-use

Hothands insole foot warmers.

These disposable options come in three styles and are super easy to use.

They don’t get as hot as other options and can’t be paused or reused.

Hot Hands are a ski lodge classic for a reason. These old-school foot warmers are easy to activate by shaking, then simply sticking them where you need them. They’ll heat up to 109 degrees Fahrenheit (running at an average of 99 degrees Fahrenheit) over the course of about 15 minutes. In addition to the insoles, Hot Hands makes toe warmers and “Bigfoot warmers” for men’s size 10 and up. Once these are activated, you can’t pause them, but you’ll get up to nine hours from the insoles, eight from the toe warmers, and seven from the Bigfoots. (Bigfeet?) If they feel like they’re fading before that, re-expose them to air and give them a good shake and they should come back to life.

The Details: One size | Chemical reaction | Up to 109 degrees | Up to 9 hours

Best Sustainable

Ignik foot warmers.

These compostable warmers are made of biodegradable ingredients and can be resealed if you’re interrupted during use.

They’re not adjustable beyond that — it’s either all or nothing.

The real most sustainable choice is not buying things you don’t need, or buying them once and keeping them forever. If neither of those are in the cards for your current foot warmer journey, you can at least go compostable with these insoles from Ignik. The simple foot warmers are made with all-natural, biodegradable ingredients and provide consistent heat for up to eight hours — a long time for any warmer, especially one that’s air-activated. Once you’ve activated them, if you haven’t used their entire eight-hour run time, you can reseal the pouch and then activate it again (within up to 72 hours). Once that runs out, the pouch is reusable and recyclable. Just cut the warmer sack and compost the interior components. Ignik also makes toe warmers if you don’t need as much coverage.

The Details: One size | Natural minerals | Chemical reaction | Up to 8 hours

Best Microwavable

Physionatural microwavable booties.

These fleecy, machine-washable booties surround your feet with natural grains and clay beads.

They only come in one size and are a bit bulky.

Take advantage of your microwave for more than just leftovers. These booties are filled with flaxseed, buckwheat hull, and clay beads, so all you have to do is put them in the microwave and then step in for their soothing, fleecy warmth. Because the fill is placed throughout the foot, ankle, and sole, you’ll be fully enveloped in heat immediately after the timer dings. And if you’ve worn them a little too much, just take out the filling containers and throw them in the wash. They come in one size that fits up to a women’s size 11 or men’s size 10, and they might be a bit bulky if you want to walk around, but are ideal for a cozy cabin getaway or relaxing at home.

The Details: One size | Minky fabric | Bead fill

Best Heated Socks

Day wolf heated socks.

These comfortable, battery-powered socks hold up to extreme conditions.

They aren’t machine-washable and take up to 15 minutes to heat up.

We tested out 15 different pairs of heated socks , and the Day Wolf came in at the top of the pack. Over the course of two months of testing, they kept us warm while out in the city and on the ski hill , feeling soft, breathable, and stretchy the entire time. They have excellent cushioning as well as a good level of thickness, and they won’t bunch up in your boots. The heat comes from a rechargeable battery, which you can remove in order to hand-wash the socks. They took up to 15 minutes to fully warm up in testing, but once they got there, they stayed nice and toasty.

The Details: S to XL | Polyester, elastane, nylon | Battery | 3 settings | Up to 121 degrees F | Up to 10 hours

Best Booties

Dr. arthritis heated booties.

These booties envelope your whole ankle while providing a soothing lavender scent.

You can’t actually do much walking in them; they’re better for reclining.

Dr. Arthritis lives up to its company name thanks to its founders, two actual medical doctors. Its booties go higher up the ankle than most other designs, providing plenty of warmth to your lower extremities thanks to microwavable, flaxseed-filled insoles. Just remove the insoles, heat them up, and then reinsert them before slipping your feet in. They’re available in blue or pink, though only one size, and are conveniently both hand- and machine-washable. They even smell like lavender for extra winter relaxation .

The Details: One size | Fabric | Microwavable insole

Best Slippers

Actionheat heated slippers.

The Warming Store

These fleecy, machine-washable slippers stay warm up to four hours.

They only come in one unisex size.

We named the ActionHeat our favorite heated slippers for their ability to warm up the entire underside of your foot with built-in heat panels accompanied by a soft fleece fabric and plush cushioning. They’re powered by three AA batteries per slipper, which last for about four hours, zipped into the soles and activated by an on/off switch on the side. You can remove the batteries to run them through your washing machine after taking advantage of their weather-resistant material by wearing them outside.

The Details: One size | Weather-resistant fleece | AA batteries | 1 setting | Up to 120 degrees F | Up to 4 hours

Best Insoles

Dr. warm rechargeable heated insole.

These remote-controlled insoles provide three settings and up to five hours of battery life.

Their battery life can be short, especially if you use the highest setting.

If you’d rather go for a pair of reusable insoles, opt for this rechargeable style from Dr. Warm. You get three heat modes to choose from, ranging from 100–113 degrees on low to 140–150 degrees on high, with a battery life that can range from two to three hours on high and four to five hours on low. It’s all controllable by remote, so you don’t need to worry about having your phone on you or taking your shoes off to adjust them. When the battery runs out, they plug in via USB-A cable, and a wall adapter is included if you don’t have any ports to spare. They also come in two sizes — medium, which fits a women’s 5.5 to 9 and men’s 4 to 8, and large, which fits a women’s 9 to 11 or men’s 8.5 to 12 — and black or red so they can blend in with your shoe or stand out. And if you want to customize your fit, take advantage of the trimmable front end.

The Details: M and L | Lithium polymer battery | 3 settings | Up to 150 degrees F | Up to 5 hours

Gintao Electric Heated Foot Pad

They let you tuck your feet right into a warm, fleecy pocket.

You may need to do some maneuvering to keep the warmth in and drafts out.

This top-rated pad lets you tuck your feet right in the middle, essentially sandwiching them in between two fuzzy flannel sheets. Choose from three heat settings that go up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, adjusted by the on-cord control panel. Since you can only use it while it’s plugged in, it can technically go indefinitely, but has an auto shut-off after two hours for safety. The 10-foot cord gives you plenty of space to choose from even if you’re short on outlet space, and since it measures a generous 20 by 22 inches, you’ve got room for a friend to snuggle in next to you as well. Since it's so large, though, you may need to do some maneuvering to keep drafts out and avoid heat escaping.

The Details: One size | Fabric | Battery/wall plug | 3 settings | Up to 120 degrees F | 2 hours before auto shut-off

Best Splurge Massager

Cloud massage shiatsu foot massager.

Get several modes of deep massage with this device that can accommodate multiple parts of your legs.

It’s quite bulky and weighs in at 22 pounds, so it's not easiest to store or maneuver.

Treat your lower legs after a long day of shoveling snow or hitting the slopes with the Cloud Massage. This heated massager with two separate cushioned sections can work on your feet, ankles, or calves with five different modes and an adjustable base. While you only get one heat level (on or off), you can choose from three intensity levels as well as a rolling massage, compression therapy, or sway function; if you upgrade to the remote-control version, you get two heat settings and four intensity levels. Just keep in mind that it's quite bulky and weighs in at 22 pounds, so it may not be the easiest to store or maneuver if you’re short on space, but since you plug it in to operate, you’ll never run out of battery life.

The Details: One size | Corded electric | One heat setting (no remote) or two heat settings (with remote)

Best Budget Massager

Snailax 3-in-1 foot warmer.

Tuck your feet into a cozy cavern with multiple heat and massage settings

The focus is more on vibration than heat, some of which may escape out of the opening.

If you’re still just dipping your toe into the world of foot warmers and don’t want to commit to a more expensive massager, the Snailax will serve you well. Tuck your feet into the plush cloth-lined opening and enjoy a heated (or not, if it’s not that kind of day) vibrating massage (kneading not included). There are two levels of heat to choose from, as well as five vibration modes. You can also unzip the foot pocket and just use the flat cushion base as a vibrating massage pad elsewhere on your body, like your lower back. There’s no battery needed, since you plug it into the wall, but it’s still fairly light and portable to move from under your desk to in front of the couch. If you choose to upgrade to the version that includes a remote control, you get three vibration modes and intensities and two heat levels.

The Details: Up to 3 heat settings | Up to 130 degrees F | 30-, 60- and 90-minute heating intervals

Tips for Buying a Foot Warmer

Consider your temperature control needs.

Do you want to be able to adjust the temperature of your foot warmer, or is a simple on/off switch sufficient? If you’re going to be outside all day and not doing any high-intensity activity, one setting is probably sufficient, but if you’ll be going indoors and out, you may prefer the ability to turn down the heat when you’re inside both to avoid sweat and to help your batteries last longer.

Check for footwear compatability

Make sure you try your foot warmers out with whatever shoes or boots you’ll be wearing them in, especially if you’re going to be wearing something notoriously tight-fitting, like ski boots . Thicker socks or pads may throw off the fit of your equipment or not fit into sleeker styles.

Think about portability

If you’re bringing your foot warmer on a trip, you should consider how it will fit in your luggage. Some reusables won’t be able to go in your checked luggage (check the battery type to see if it’s TSA-approved) or are bulkier or heavier than just throwing a few single-use packets into your bag.

Know your coverage needs

Many foot warmers, both single-use and reusable, only heat up in the front of your foot. If you’re facing colder conditions or just want a more fully enveloping heat experience, make sure your foot warmer has heating elements throughout the foot.

It depends, but most of them end up somewhere in the low 100s Fahrenheit. (Our top picks can reach around 120 degrees based on manufacturer specs.) If you’re worried about your foot warmers getting too warm, check the details from that specific manufacturer. Keep in mind that with battery-powered heaters, the higher you put the heat, the less battery life you get. Some plug-in foot warmers have multiple modes you can choose from if you want to vary your heat; single-use options aren’t adjustable, but may get overly hot if continuously exposed to oxygen, like in a ventilated shoe.

Yes. In terms of our top picks, Hot Hands states that their warmers have an estimated shelf life of three to four years, and Ignik states that their warmers are effective for three years from the manufacture date.

This is really a question for your doctor. People with peripheral neuropathy or other types of decreased sensitivity in their feet, diabetics, and those with sensitive skin may want to be cautious as they might not be as aware of potential overheating. Be sure to check with a medical professional if this is potentially an issue for you.

The footwear experts and product analysts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab test all sorts of orthotics and gear for your feet, from walking shoes for women to recovery shoes , knee braces and more. To choose the best insoles we relied on decades of Lab expertise. In our most recent evaluation, we tested more than 15 pairs of insoles, assessing each pair for its materials, construction, arch support, feel and more. Additionally, we gathered shopping tips on how to find the best insoles for your feet from two orthopedic surgeons and considered feedback from our at-home testers.

After checking out our top picks, continue scrolling to learn more about whether you need insoles and what to look for when choosing the right ones for you, with helpful tips from Jensen Henry, M.D. as well as Amiethab A Aiyer , M.D., Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon at Johns Hopkins.

If you're on the fence about custom orthotics, consider this 2023 Good Housekeeping Fitness Award -winning brand that’s frequently recommended by podiatrists as an alternative. Though these insoles are specifically designed to support high arches, testers with low arches found them extremely comfortable too. Our pros like that the insoles support the entire foot and that they’re trimmable so you can get a nearly perfect fit for your shoes.

“They feel very versatile and completely change the fit and feel of my shoes,” says Grace Wu , Textiles Lab product analyst for the Good Housekeeping Institute. “Compared to the rest, these insoles notably help take the pressure off your joints .” Online reviewers claim they’ve helped provide relief for common issues like foot pain, knee pain and more. Just keep in mind that they’re on the thicker side, so ensure your shoes are roomy enough.

Unlike the product name suggests, these insoles aren’t just for those who suffer from plantar fasciitis; they’re also a great choice for those with flat feet or high arches who require arch support and cushioning. Our footwear experts love that they’re affordable and suitable for a wide variety of everyday activities , from standing all day to walking to working out, hiking and more. An Amazon best-seller, these insoles have more than 60,000 reviews and an average 4.3-star rating. Online reviewers claim they have excellent arch support and are comfortable to wear, just keep in mind that it's recommended you replace them every six months.

High-impact activities like running can have a huge strain on your feet and joints, which is why supportive shoes are critical. Our footwear experts love this two-time winner of a GH Fitness Award that will help your shoes absorb shock. Dr. Scholl's Running Insoles received rave reviews from testers for their extreme comfort and bounce thanks in part to the gel construction. “These provide arch support with a responsive feel that makes them great for all kinds of exercise,” says Wu. “They're ideal for running but also walking or other workouts (aside from lifting). In our test, runners with medium to high arches gave them high scores across the board for their comfort and notable support.” Some testers did mention, however, that the insoles may squeak once inserted.

Pop these insoles into your hiking boots for some added support and comfort as you explore the great outdoors. Oboz hiking boots have performed well in our previous Lab tests, and these insoles from the brand will pair with them nicely by providing medium arch support and a deep heel cup for extra cushioning. “This pair offers firm support for more stability ,” says Wu, which can be especially helpful on uneven terrains. Though they’re not quite as responsive as other insoles, they held Wu's feet perfectly in place while walking, she said. Other testers who took them on hikes found them both comfortable and supportive, even after extended use.

On your feet all day long? These insoles from Timberland have nearly 20,000 reviews on Amazon and an average 4.4-star rating . They're constructed specifically for boots and sport the brand's "anti-fatigue technology" that Timberland claims to provide support and shock absorption. Though the online description says they're for men, these insoles are actually unisex and can be used in women's boots as well. "I stand for 10+ hrs on concrete and these inserts made the difference," one online reviewer shares. Several consumers note, however, that these don't provide much arch support and are a better choice for those primarily seeking extra cushioning.

timberland insoles

This popular pick on Amazon is great for a variety of activities: walking, running, working out and more. It's a sound investment (that won't break the bank) for anyone with high arches and in need of extra support throughout the day. "They elevate a good shoe into a better fitting and more comfortable pair," says one online reviewer. Several other users claim that they've helped alleviate pain from common issues like plantar fasciitis. Some do warn that the sizing and fit can be confusing, so make sure to double-check before purchasing.

High heels tend to be some of the least comfortable shoes out there, but you can help relieve pressure on the ball of your foot with these slim insoles from Dr. Scholl’s. Our footwear experts love how easy they are to insert into shoes simply by removing their adhesive backing and placing them on the hotspot. The super soft gel should provide some extra cushioning and help prevent your foot from sliding too far forward as you dance the night away. Some online reviewers do wish that these insoles were thinner, though others love how cushy they feel.

These insoles from Fulton were designed to absorb shock as you work out as well as provide arch support, whether you have flat feet or high arches. They’re available in a wide range of sizes and you can choose whether you prefer a standard or wide fit, depending on your sneakers. Because they’re made from a cork base, the brand recommends spending 10 hours acclimating to the insoles initially so they properly mold to your feet. Testers liked that the insoles provided adequate support and durability. “The insoles have enough integrity to remain supportive, and I think the insoles will last the lifetime of my usual running shoes,” one tester shares.

How we test the best insoles

insoles testing at the good housekeeping institute

The experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab have been testing footwear and orthotics for decades. To test insoles, we evaluate each pair for key specs like materials, construction, feel and design. We send our consumer testers home with insoles to use in their own shoes. They share feedback on overall comfort, arch support and fit. We also interview orthopedists and podiatrists who share expertise on insoles and useful buying tips. Our selections above are based on our years of Lab expertise as well as testing notes for insoles we've gotten hands-on with.

What to consider when shopping for insoles

line break

✔️ Size: Over-the-counter brands offer multiple sizes of insoles that, according to Dr. Henry, should fit according to your shoe size. "Usually, a supportive sneaker or a shoe with extra depth will accommodate insoles," she explains. Another expert tip: Don't forget to remove the premade insert that comes in your shoe before inserting the insole. For the best fit, consider getting trimmable insoles and make sure that the insole doesn't shift around inside the shoe.

✔️ Arch support: Finding the appropriate amount of arch support for your feet is essential when buying insoles. According to Dr. Henry, "If you have a flat foot (no or low arch), look for an orthotic that provides arch support and has a medial (inside of the foot) wedge to support the foot. If you have a high-arched (cavus or cavovarus) foot, look for an orthotic that has a lateral (outside of foot) wedge and/or recessed area underneath the big toe."

✔️ Cushioning: Cushioning can be beneficial if it helps offload an area of the foot that's painful, says Dr. Aiyer. But he warns that cushioning can sometimes be thick, which means you'll have less space between the top of the shoe and where you have pain.

✔️ Purpose: You'll find a wide range of insoles, including ones marketed for running, plantar fasciitis, hiking, walking and more. Consider whether you need activity-specific or pain-specific insoles and purchase your pair accordingly.

✔️ Materials: Over-the-counter insoles are typically made from a variety of materials, according to Dr. Henry. These commonly include "gel or foam (including polyurethane and ethylene vinyl acetate [EVA]), for cushioning and shock absorption." She explains that you'll also come across leather, cork, rubber, felt and viscoelastic polymers, especially in insoles constructed for people with symptomatic or painful misalignment of the foot as these materials help provide both "shock absorption and flexibility."

✔️ Comfort: "Tread lightly and listen to the body," says Dr. Aiyer. It may take a few tries before you find a pair of insoles that alleviate your symptoms, and you should stop using any insoles that cause discomfort or pain. According to Dr. Aiyer, "Some discomfort is OK but if the insoles continue to cause discomfort, it's not the right pair for you and you should consider another."

✔️ Durability: Dr. Henry explains that insoles usually last around 6 to 12 months. "Look for discoloration, visible damage, compression or loss of shape, or lingering odors – these are all signs that it may be time to get a new pair," she says.

What do insoles do?

line break

There are hundreds of insoles out there, but what do they do? Dr. Henry explains their several functions:

  • Correct or accommodate a deformity (i.e., a malalignment of the foot or ankle)
  • Offload high-pressure or high-stress areas in the foot
  • Cushion a vulnerable area of skin or soft tissue
  • Reduce motion at a painful area of the foot
  • Help with motion for a stiff area of the foot

Who needs insoles?

line break

If you're unsure whether you need insoles, our pros recommend being evaluated by an orthopedist or podiatrist to determine whether you might benefit from a pair depending on the symptoms you're experiencing.

A few common symptoms, according to Dr. Aiyer, include stiff big toes, arthritis, toe deformities, malalignment of the foot, flat feet and more .

Camping World’s Best RV Stabilizer Jacks

foot pads travel

This universal stabilizer is a great supplement to the existing electric or manual stabilizing jacks on your RV. The manufacturer recommends using two – one on either side of your RV or one in the front and one in the rear – for optimal stabilization.

Each stabilizer is manufactured with corrosion-resistant aluminum with a maximum weight rating of 250 pounds. They will fit RV frames from 14” up to 28” high and easily fold to be stored underneath your RV between uses.

Order your universal stabilizer.

Best Fifth Wheel Stabilizer Jack For the King Pin: Ultra-Fab Heavy Duty King Pin Stabilizer

Ultra-Fab Heavy Duty King Pin Stabilizer

This stabilizer is designed to stabilize the king pin of a fifth wheel. Depending on your fifth wheel’s floorplan, this added stabilization and support may be vital. For instance, many rear living fifth wheel floorplans have the bedroom at the front, meaning this stabilizer will give you added support so you feel less movement while trying to sleep.

This king pin stabilizer adjusts from 37” up to 50” high and weighs less than 25 pounds. The threaded cup at the top makes it easy to adjust to fit your fifth wheel’s king pin to provide front-to-back and side-to-side stabilization.

Find this king pin stabilizer at your local Camping World.

Best Replacement RV Stabilizer Jack: Ultra-Fab 24” Scissor Jacks

Ultra-Fab 24" Scissor Jacks

If you need to replace broken manual stabilizing jacks on your travel trailer, this set is a great option. Start by checking the extension height and mounting pattern for your existing stabilizer jacks and checking with your RV’s manufacturer to see if these will be a compatible replacement.

Technician Tip: Retail specialists at a nearby Camping World can also help you find replacement stabilizer jacks for your towable RV. And this tutorial walks through the basics of installing new scissor stabilizing jacks on your RV.

These scissor stabilizer jacks retract down to 4.25” when traveling. They are rated for up to 6,500 pounds per jack and offer 5” x 9” foot pads to help prevent tilting or sinking once extended, although you should consider using stabilizer jack pads below them to keep them out of the dirt.

Check the price on this pair of scissor stabilizing jacks.

Best for Slide-outs: Camco Eaz-Lift Slide-out Support

Camco Eaz-Lite Slide-out Supports

Slide-out supports are really only something you should employ for long-term stationary RV living. Their main benefit is relieving the stress on your slide-out’s mechanical components when extended, but they also reduce swaying, rocking, and slide-out sag.

However, your coach must be properly supported with jacks and/or jack stands before installing slide-out supports. This article explains why . If you’ve done that, you can use these Camco supports that extend from 19” up to 47” high and are rated to support up to 5,000 pounds each.

Learn more about these slide-out supports.

Are Jack Pads Necessary for RVs with Stabilizing Jacks?

Camper placing jack pads under the best RV stabilizer jacks

Some campgrounds require jack pads below your RV’s leveling system or stabilizing jacks. Even if the campgrounds you frequent do not, jack pads prevent the feet of your stabilizer jacks from sinking, which can cause your RV to shift or tilt as you move about inside.

The benefit of jack pads is most readily experienced when camping on less durable surfaces (i.e., any unpaved campsite). When the ground beneath your RV is dirt, grass, mud, or even rock, there’s a higher likelihood for the feet of your stabilizer jacks to sink or shift during your stay.

Here are a few stabilizing jack pads for different applications:

  • For Lightweight Travel Trailers: Camco Stabilizing Jack Pads
  • For Heavier Fifth Wheels or Travel Trailers: Camco Heavy-Duty Stabilizing Jack Pads
  • For Fifth Wheels or Motorhomes: SnapPad Permanent Stabilizing Jack Pads

Can You Level an RV with Stabilizer Jacks?

RV technician using crank handle to extend one of the best RV stabilizer jacks

It’s never a good idea to attempt to level an RV with stabilizer jacks. There’s a reason why you’ll find leveling blocks as a separate solution that should be used in tandem with stabilizer jacks for towable RVs. There’s also a reason why many motorized RVs are built with hydraulic leveling systems.

RV stabilization happens after your unit is level. Depending on your RV, you’ll use leveling blocks, your manual or electric tongue jack, and/or a hydraulic leveling system to level your RV. You’ll then employ stabilizer jacks to reduce shifting and movement inside your coach.

How To Stabilize an RV Trailer

The exact process for stabilizing an RV trailer will vary based on the products you’re using. However, it’s important to remember that stabilizing your RV always comes after you level it in all directions. This video walks you through the basic steps for leveling and stabilizing most RVs.

We also have a written tutorial with tips on stabilizing a travel trailer, fifth wheel, or motorhome that you should read if you haven’t already.

Do detox foot pads really work?

There's no reliable evidence that detox foot pads work.

Manufacturers of detox foot pads say that their products draw toxins out of your body while you sleep. Some manufacturers have claimed that detox foot pads also treat high blood pressure, headaches, cellulite, depression, diabetes, insomnia and aid in weight loss.

Detox foot pad are stuck on the bottom of your feet and left there overnight, purportedly to draw out toxins, such as heavy metals. When you peel off the detox foot pad in the morning, its darkened or discolored appearance supposedly reflects the toxins that have been removed from your body.

However, no scientific studies have been published that show that detox foot pads work or that they're safe. The Federal Trade Commission has even charged some distributors of detox foot pads with deceptive advertising.

The bottom line: As with anything that sounds too good to be true, your best bet is to wait for scientific evidence that proves a claim before investing your time and money.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

foot pads travel

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

foot pads travel

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

foot pads travel

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

foot pads travel

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

foot pads travel

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
