Behemoth is a blackened death metal band that formed in 1991 in Gdansk, in Poland. The band consists of Adam ‘Nergal’ Darski, Zbigniew ‘Inferno’ Promiński and Tomasz ‘Orion’ Wróblewski.

Behemoth takes its name from the biblical beast, suggesting immediately the type of style its founders were going for. The band formed in 1991 with Nergal being the only original member to still be in the current line-up of the band. With Nergal on the guitar and lead vocals, the other two original members consisted of Adam ‘Baal Ravenlock’ Muraszko on drums and Adam ‘Desecrator’ Malinowski on the guitar and bass. The band started by recording demos in the early 90s, which gained little attention anywhere outside the Polish underground metal scene. They began to tour during this period, but failed to gain a large fan base due to bad promotion.

The band’s fifth album saw their real rise to fame as a headlining tour soon followed. The album, titled ‘Thelema.6’ marked the band’s real move towards blackened death metal. The album showed off the band’s precise and impressive guitar parts and drumming and was heavily supported by the press and media. With the major success of this album, the band was able to play at a number of prestigious live events like Wacken Open Air, With Full Force, Inferno Metal Festival, Mystic Festival, and Mind Over Matter Autumn, all of which helped them to increase their fan base.

With ten albums to their name as of 2014, hit singles such as ‘Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel’ and ‘Decade of Therion’ and a number of nominations, and one win, from the Polish Fryderyk Awards, the band has built quite a following for itself.

Live reviews

Behemoth great as always, The Wiltern venue in LA... much less great. Floor/mosh pit not general admission?? Got stuck around a TRUCK LOAD of hipsters and I could only see around an average of 15-20% of the stage for the bulk of the concert. If social media is a higher priority than watching a concert and you understand the intricate and varied nuances of mustache/beard waxes... The Wiltern in LA is probably a great place for you. Behemoth's stage presence has improved every show I've been to and this was easily my favorite setlist in the 7yrs since i found Behemoth but I easily had more fun last year with their 6 song setlists when they were opening for Slayer just do to other venues having more natural means to let the various types of fans find each other as they filter through a venue (I've been going to metal shows for 18yrs and this is the first time I've been surprised where you could or couldn't go with general admission). Great show... and I'm sure upwards of 40-50% of general admission purchasers got to see it properly. If you were there and got a good spot then good for you, you'll have more room next time because I won't ever pay for a metal show at The Wiltern again.

Third time I’ve had the great pleasure of seeing this truly amazing band and they did not disappoint. With every tour the quality of the production gets better and better - apparently there was a restriction on using actual flames at The Forum last night but there was plenty other forms of smoke and pyromania to add to the atmosphere, as well as very cool visual set-pieces and costume changes.

They ploughed through a good chunk of their classics and cuts from the new album that fans were hoping for such as ‘God = Dog’, ‘Ecclesia Diabolica Catholica’ and ‘Bartzabel’. ‘Daimonos’ from 2009’s Evangelion was also a nice surprise and as always, they closed out with an incredible finale.

What else is there to say that many others haven’t already? A vital, life-affirming performance from a vital, life-affirming band that any self-respecting metal fan should make a point of seeing at least once.

As a brief aside, At The Gates made for a superb main support, their material speaks for itself and they had the crowd in the palm of their hand like it was 1996 all over again. Wolves In The Throne Room also showed enough to merit checking them out further.

Behemoth is a black metal band anti church band., so they come out clad in Gothic leather or battle regalia and have their faces painted white and black with unique patterns. They come out flames ablaze on the stage with awesome pyros, massive drum set and their ambiance is overpowering. The stage is simple with the band banners and some art work.

During the sets the crowd goes wild, chants, sings, moshes. People get trampled over during some of the moshes. I mostly go for the music because I do not care to get hurt, but the one concert I went too they brought out "fake blood" and sprayed the crowd which was pretty unique and neat. The feed on the crowds energy and so does the crowd.

During each song intermission they will scream at the crowd, give them some background information or tell them to get ready for the mosh, this usually gets the masses riled up and makes them charge at each other like animals. Most of the lyrics and singing are guttural screamings so you actually need to enjoy this type of music to be able to understand it.

The show they put on is amazing for small venue, i am sure the bigger venues for them include more theatrics and better props

First off....

I would have never even known Behemoth was coming to Denver without SongKick. Good job.

Second off....

I've never seen them before in concert.

A friend and I snagged tickets for their show at the gothic theater.

This happens to be my friends favorite band too...

The concert itself was pretty good.

The opening band was a folk style death metal band from overseas...

Damn could that girl sing.. Amazing voice.

The crowd went absolutely crazy when Behemoth came out.

I've never seen anything like it.

You could tell the band and the fans were having a good time.

Their encore was great.

They said they were going to do one more song & that turned into 5 more songs.

I would definitely recommend anyone & everyone to go see these guys live.

I'm not a big death metal fan but these guys put on a great show.

I'd definitely see them again.

Hail the light !

Hail Illuminati.

Somehow I had never seen Behemoth live before now. They are not only superb musicians, but performers, as well. The music completely ripped and the show was quite a spectacle. Attendance was great and everyone was clearly really into it. You should go if you get a chance to see them. At The Gates opened and really warmed the crowd up good. It was immediately apparent that they've been doing this for a while. Very tight set. Either band could have just as easily been the headliner.

I love watching Behemoth but that was the first time I've seen them as an opening act. Pretty straightforward, the only new things were Nergal breaking out a megaphone and Orion's new goatee since last I saw them gave a little more stage presence. Other than that, being limited to 7 songs made it feel a little hurried in between them. Pretty decent set list for me, but that's always subjective so it could be better or worse depending on your favorites.

Absolutely the best show I've seen in a long time. At the Gates were engaging and put on a terrific show, while Wolves in the Throne Room did well for what they do.

However, it was Behemoth who blew me away. Specifically, Nergal, whose intensity was utterly infectious. They played a great selection of tracks from various albums, and sounded amazingly close to the studio recordings. I would most definitely travel to see Behemoth again.

I attended this show especially to see Behemoth and Slayer. All the bands were good but Behemoth kicked ass. They had a very short set which disappointed me, but I'm hoping they return. I wondered how it would go, with the temp's close to 100, but they didn't disappoint. The high point of their set was when they done, O Father O Satan O Sun. They absolutely killed it. Very few bands can pull off corpse paint in the light and temps so high.

BEHEMOTH released their last album Opvs Contra Natvram on September 16th 2022 via Nuclear Blast Records. The band's 12th studio album is a stark reminder of the rebellion, individuality and unflinching self-expression that BEHEMOTH's phenomenal work inbues, shaped by a literary worldview. It also reflects a musical evolution, as there's little doubt that Opvs Contra Natvram is BEHEMOTH's strongest and most sophisticated musical collection to date.

BEHEMOTH Announces June/July 2023 European Tour

BEHEMOTH will make appearances at some of the biggest festivals, including Download , Hellfest , Graspop Metal Meeting , Sweden Rock and more, plus play headlining shows with a curated accompaniment, featuring HYPOCRISY , VENDED , IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT and GAEREA .

We aim to make a lasting impression on these massive stages alongside the biggest names in metal. We've also put together some awesome club shows with a mix of legendary and contemporary artists. We can't wait to be amongst you, Legions!"

In a recent interview with Australia's Heavy , Nergal spoke about his desire to make BEHEMOTH 's 12th studio album, "Opvs Contra Natvram" , "sound very organic", especially when compared to its predecessor, 2018's "I Loved You At Your Darkest" . He said: "Every band these days, you talk to every band, and every band — literally — heavy metal band, thrash, death, whatever, says, 'Oh, we managed to get that organic sound.' And then I go and listen to those records and I'm, like, 'There's nothing organic about this record.' Ninety-nine percent of the records, they sound robotic. Every fucking click, every kick, every snare drum, every part of the record is exactly the same. It's not organic. 'Organic' is when music fluctuates, when there's dynamics, when it goes up and down. That's why we tapped Joe Barresi [to mix the LP]. You know him for his work with NINE INCH NAILS , QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE , MONSTER MAGNET and a lot of rock bands. SLIPKNOT … Basically, rock bands, mainstream bands. And he does this old-school mixing. He doesn't use Pro Tools . I mean, he uses Pro Tools , but then, when he's done with one song, he just pulls all the knobs down and starts from scratch. You go, 'Hey, but I wanted to do some tweaks in the previous one.' 'Sorry, it's done.' You've got to pay for everything again. So [when] it's done, it's done. You don't endlessly go and correct that, which is beautiful. Twenty, thirty years ago, it was done that way."

He continued: "These days, you can fucking perfect things to the point that you cannot fucking listen to it, because the perfection makes things boring, imperfect and a whole lot uninteresting. Live, it's not perfect; that's why it's so fucking exciting. So why make things that are just so fucking polished? I don't get it, especially in extreme metal music. It's gotta be fucking weird, it's gotta be dangerous. Where is the danger factor? So I really wanted to bring the danger factor back to our music. It was present, but maybe this is the record [where] it's the most present ever."

Released last September, "Opvs Contra Natvram" was previously described in a press release as "a stark reminder of the rebellion, individuality, and unflinching self-expression that BEHEMOTH 's phenomenal work imbues, shaped by a literary worldview."

"Opvs Contra Natvram" features twin cover art available in both black and white and was released in an array of physical formats designed by Bartek Rogalewicz ( Lodge.Black ).

Behemoth at The Stage AE

Stage ae, pittsburgh, pennsylvania, tickets from $69.

This summer, Poland’s most sinister metal band is making its way towards North America! The highly-acclaimed extreme metal powerhouse Behemoth recently announced a series of headlining one-off dates. The band, known for their traditional black metal style and occult-driven lyrics, will embark on a 21-date trek across the U.S. and Canada! On Friday, 15th September 2023, Behemoth will make a coveted stop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to perform at the iconic Stage AE! Heavy metal fans can anticipate a fully-packed setlist, which includes fan favorites, such as “Opa Pro Nobis Lucifer,” “Conquer All,” “Ov Fire and the Void,” and more! The band will also feature tracks from their latest album, Opvs Contra Natvramm, which featured hits. “Once Upon a Pale Horse” and “The Deathless Sun! Behemoth is currently at the forefront of the most infamous but beloved metal bands on the planet, so if you’ve got a taste for the most extreme of all the extremes, you better hurry and score your tickets now!

Behemoth Tickets from $69

Behemoth’s highly-anticipated headlining tour is a series of on-off dates from their supporting trek with Danzig. The band will make their way across 21 cities to perform headlining shows for American fans during August and September. For their show at Stage AE in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Behemoth brings along special guests Twin Temple and Imperial Triumphant. If you’re curious how an obscure metal band from Poland has made its way into the American heavy metal radar, the answer is simply because Behemoth's musicianship is quite brilliant. The band may have a sinister aesthetic, coupled with anti-christ lyrics and a controversial frontman. Primary songwriter and vocalist Adam “Nergal” Darski has come under fire in his home country for his “intentionally insulting the Holy Bible.” However, the band, controversial as they come, creates outstanding compositions, and their musicality is top-tier.

Sure enough, Behemoth has amassed a massive and loyal following. This is why the band’s European summer trek, The Deathless Svmmer Tour, had them performing in multiple major festivals, such as Download, Hellfest, Sweden Rock, Graspop, and Mystic Festival.

During their upcoming North American tour, fans can anticipate Behemoth’s plethora of hits. The band has been known to release numerous hits and music videos with each studio release. In 2004, they released their breakout album, Demigod, which spawned the hits “Conquer All” and “Slaves Shall Serve.”

Their follow-up album, The Apostasy, entered the top 10 in Poland’s mainstream charts, as well as the U.S.’s Billboard 200. The album featured several fan favorites, such as the “Prometherion,” “At the Left Hand Ov God,” and “Inner Sanctum.” Since the release of their ninth studio album, Evangelion, in 2009, Behemoth has consistently charted across multiple countries, even topping the mainstream chart in Poland. Their latest album, Opvs Contra Natvram, is their third effort to go number 1. Released last year via Nuclear Blast, the album featured several titles, including “Ov My Herculean Exile,” “Off to War!” “The Deathless Sun,” and many more.

If you love heavy metal, you should experience Behemoth’s live show. The band is known for their extremely tight sets and impressive productions! So hurry and score your tickets now before they’re gone!

behemoth band tour 2023

Behemoth, Auckland NZ, 2023

Behemoth performing live at Powerstation, Auckland New Zealand 2023. Photo by Doug Peters.

24th November 2023 Powerstation, Auckland, New Zealand.

Review by Sarah Kidd . Photography by Doug Peters .

There can only be one thing sweeter than an international metal gig, and that is one that is held on a Friday night. For it is not often that New Zealand lucks out on the roulette wheel of dates to be able to let their hair down at a show and not have to suffer through the rest of the week.

A swarm of black descended upon Powerstation last night in order to see the mighty Behemoth, supported by not one, but two very different but equally as divine New Zealand support acts.

To begin the evening, Undiscovered Moons of Saturn brought their own brand of atmospheric godliness to the stage, two cloaked figures, their painted faces materializing from under minimalist lighting and haze.

Led by the esoteric Sean O’Kane Connolly and bringing their own form of dark ambient / drone that shapeshifted from dungeon synth laden soundscapes into reverent chanting complete with animal skulls and vocals that seeped inside of you, Undiscovered Moons of Saturn were the perfect opener for the night. On a side note, but one that is of great importance, Connolly is also a tireless champion of the local music scene, long may humans of his disposition continue to exist within our realms.

Formed in 2017 “from the flames of MetalTower and the embers of Nullifier” the trio that goes by the name of Sciolism arrived to bring a healthy dose of blackened death metal; their unassuming demeanour soon transforming into a three headed beast that had the crowd paying full attention within seconds.

While Dan Bernstein certainly has the vocals and guitar down, leading the charge with a voice that rumbled from deep within his core, and impressive alternate picking. It was hard to tear your eyes away from Steven Bernstein on drums who somehow made incredible blast beats look like a stroll in the park.

Of course, serious bass is required to balance the sound and bring that true darkness, bassist Allan Lachlan delivering the goods and a stage presence worthy of such a prestigious support slot.

Having released their debut album Sacred Nothingness just over a year ago it was only fitting that Sciolism dropped the title track, the song itself slowly building in intensity, melodic riffing soon evolving into a cacophony of blast beats and guttural growls that made one salivate.

If you haven’t already obtained a copy, pick one up today, available on Bandcamp and Spotify, so any and all excuses are null and void.

By now Powerstation was heaving under the weight of black band shirts and some serious hair, everyone focused on the stage as the impressive drum kit was revealed just before the house lights were snuffed out, eliciting a roar from the crowd that sounded like a battle cry.

Suddenly Nergal appeared at the edge of the stage, his face hauntingly illuminated by a light held in his hand, the track ‘Post-God Nirvana’ providing the backing to his display. Leaping back and forth the crowd went wild as he hurled the light away and the stage was momentarily once again plunged into darkness, only to reveal seconds later the band standing in position and ripping into the first track of the evening ‘Ora Pro Nobis Lucifer’.

Formed in 1991, those that have been following Behemoth know of their origins, the Polish band from Gdańsk rising the ranks as a black metal band, but soon becoming known as extreme metal (although Nergal would prefer you don’t label them as anything at all except as what they are, which is Behemoth).

Attending a Behemoth concert is a lustral and cathartic experience, this isn’t just about the music, which is on point completely from beginning to end, but the performance itself. Nergal being the ringleader that brings it all together with a presence that truly is show stopping.

Addressing the fans, Nergal does the math, declaring that it has been eight years since they have graced our shores and how truly grateful, they are for the support from Aotearoa; “without you we would be nowhere” he declared with arms raised, the crowd voicing their heartfelt appreciation. The impassioned speech was the idyllic intro into ‘Conquer All’ the front row surging against the barrier, horns piercing the air.

The spoken intro into ‘Deathless Sun’ once again brought delicious ceremonial overtones to the set as Nergal appeared in a black cloak and intricate masquerade style half mask, his tremolo picked melodies faultless throughout. Flanked on either side by bassist Orion and guitarist Seth (also from the band Nomad) the trio made a formidable frontline of sound, drummer extraordinaire Inferno looming over them from behind his kit delivering blast beats so tight you could use them to slice flesh from the bone.

As the opening notes of ‘Blow Your Trumpets Gabriel’ echoed through the venue, those in attendance decided to show Behemoth just what they could do vocally as well, the choir of voices rising into the air delivering goosebumps. This is what metal is about, not gatekeeping or bullshit attitudes, but a room full of bodies united as one under the banner of music that they all cherish and live by.

Picking up on the vibe, Nergal declares that this is where they feed off the fan’s energy, as he led them through a chant that was almost deafening in volume, but one that brought grins to the faces of all that were present.

Straight into ‘Once Upon a Pale Horse’ a definitive crowd favourite and it felt like this could quite possibly be frontrunner for metal gig of the year; the rhythmical beat almost hedonistic in nature reverberating throughout and being welcomed with open arms.

Part of the appeal of Behemoth is the theatrics of their live performances, the band at one point disappearing under momentary darkness only for Nergal to reappear cloaked in red and gold and holding a thurible (an ode to his catholic upbringing). Guitar slung behind his back he dropped the metal censer to the ground as he stood upright and presented a bible. Raising it above his head he slowly eviscerated it, the pages tumbling to the ground as the crowd screamed for more. Considering Nergal (Adam Darski) faced two years in prison for this act back in 2007, it is great to see that he continues to be his authentic self.

But one of the greatest moments last night had to be when Nergal addressed the crowd and pointed out that the man responsible for Behemoth even being on stage right at that moment was standing in the front row. That without people like him, who are willing to give their blood, sweat and tears and most importantly invest time into what they do there would be no scene. Ben Mulchin of Vahalla Touring is a stalwart of the metal community here in Aotearoa and while a humble man who evades the limelight where possible he is worthy of the recognition. We salute you Ben!

Going on to say how Orion had a back injury the day before and could not even stand up, Nergal described it as some kind of miracle that he was even on stage giving it his all and that it was down to the unfailing devotion of all who were standing before them.

A classic was then gifted in the form of ‘No Sympathy for Fools’ which was embraced wholeheartedly as Nergal introduced it as a track that when he wrote it, he had no idea about the corruption that festered within our society, a wry smile passing across his face indicating that he certainly saw it coming.

Closing the set on ‘Chant for Eschaton 2000’ and Behemoth gave it their all, both Nergal and Orion spitting blood into the front rows, those splattered by it only invigorated to mosh harder. Guitar pics and sticks were handed out to ravenous hands, Behemoth barely leaving the stage before the demands for an encore were nipping at their heels.

Of course, the show finished on ‘O Father O Satan O Sun!’, Behemoth and the fans giving it their all one last time, the closing notes seeing the members leave the stage and the house lights slowly chase away the darkness. Fans were left breathless, but ecstatic as they turned to one another as if to check that the person next to them could verify what they had just witnessed was real.

Behemoth have often been described as juggernauts of their genre. Last night they emphatically proved why.

Behemoth

Friday 24 November 2023

In the annals of metal there is no band more synonymous with an unswerving commitment to the single-minded defiance of expectation than Behemoth . Over the course of their remarkable 31-year career, these Polish hellraisers – spearheaded by Adam Darski , aka Nergal – are more than just the architects of their country’s legendary extreme metal scene. Nergal ’s singular vision has forged Behemoth into something far more than a mere black metal band. Beyond any confines of genre, they have grown to become nothing less than the personification of rebellion, individuality and unflinching self-expression informed by a literate worldview and worldliness that’s resulted in a locking of horns with everything from the mainstream press to the Polish Catholic church.

Now world-renowned and yet exuberantly underground in their convictions, Behemoth are perhaps the unlikeliest of success stories, but if their stratospheric ascent and hard-won commercial achievement can be attributed to anything, it’s a cast-iron unwillingness to compromise. As Opvs Contra Natvram , their 12th studio release heralds from the rooftops – their longevity is down to a resolute commitment to find new ways to enthrall and inspire their ever-growing legion of latter-day heretics, a determination which shows no signs of erosion. It’s changing times and new battles to fight to which Nergal attributes Behemoth ’s unique ability to sound fresh despite their incredible tenure. Therein lies the inspiration for the album’s title and striking cover artwork.

“ The album title means going against the current. It’s the negative of the values and morals and ethics that I stand against. I’ve seriously been wrestling with destructive tendencies in pop culture - cancel culture, social media, and tools which I feel are very dangerous weapons in the hands of people who are not competent to judge others. That’s something which I find very destructive and disturbing and extremely limiting coming from an artists’ perspective. This is my middle finger to that. There’s a song on the record called Neo-Spartacvs. Spartacus was one of the most iconic rebels in history who went against the most powerful empire of all time. In the end it’s me screaming, ‘I Am Spartacus, and so are you!’ I want to spark that flame of rebellion. If something seems wrong then stand up to it! ”

And from the sound of Opvs … there is no doubting the artistic summit that Nergal and Behemoth are aiming for. From the colossal energy of opener Post-God Nirvana to the epic and righteous indignation of Ov My Herculean Exile and album-closer Versvs Christvs - a riveting extended track featuring piano and clean vocals which are destined to turn heads, Behemoth ’s latest is the ultimate soundtrack to these strange and troubled times.

Opening the show will be none other than local black/death wrecking crew Sciolism and dark ambient mystery Undiscovered Moons Of Saturn .
