Berlin Wall Trail Cycle Tour

Berlin Wall Trail Cycle

This was such a great urban adventure and a brilliant way to take in Berlin. I had no idea that the wall was so huge! I rode an e-bike, which made it easy (even though it was mainly flat!) and the directions were great although I did use the GPX files which I could download onto my phone. The trail is well marked most of the way, a few spots a bit tricky but it's all part of the adventure. Highly recommend this trip!

Amsterdam, Berlin and Prague

Despite not beimg picked up at the airport. Everthing is almost very good. The tour guide, Juan, is very good because he has a lot of patience in answering questions and he is so patient waiting for his passengers to get on the busá. The rour in Pragie is so tiring not because of its time we had to walk but the pacing. The local tour guide walks so fast that sometimes I thought I am lost because I could not see her. I also heard that 3 passengers were left behind and has to take a public transportation to Old Town because they got lost since they could not see where the tour guide is. The tour guide should make sure to see if everybody is with her. The hotel in Amsterdam is very nice! The hotel in Berlin is also nice but the housekeeping didnt throw our garbage when they cleaned the room. The hotel in Prague is nice but the food is not. Overall, I am giving 4 out of 5 star to this tour. Thakk you Tour Radar!

What people love about berlin tours.

The tour was good. The hotels were great and the breakfasts were plentiful. The bus driver was very safe and helpful with bags. The guides were of varying satisfaction. I was disappointed that the itinerary stated key sights we would visit but we didn’t actually go inside and free time didn’t allow for all the visits I wanted to do and we didn’t see everything on the itinerary. It was a good taster trip. I see much more on my own.
This tour is not what I expected. People leave and new people join all through the tour so the group is always changing. It is really just a taster tour because you don’t spend a lot of time in one place.
The trip was packed with activities and experiences. The tour director was excellent. Christina was very helpful and friendly. We purchased all the optional experiences and thought all were worthwhile except the last one. We will book a similar trip in the future

The 5 Best Berlin Guided Tours [2024 Reviews]

Berlin may be known for its world-class techno and fashion scenes, but we can’t ignore its history marked by espionage, art, and rebellion.

It’s one of my favorite cities in the world – not for its opulence nor white sand beaches like some other European cities – but for being a living testament to resilience and reinvention. I’ve been to Berlin many times, but taking these tours opened my eyes to just how little I knew about this incredible place.

These top Berlin guided tours will surely change your perspective and appreciate the capital even more, taking you from the graffiti-covered remnants of the Wall to the intricate palaces and churches. Let’s get started!

  • Private Walking Tour: World War 2 and Cold War Sites in Berlin

Berlin Guided Tour Reviews

1. private berlin complete history all day tour.

  • Duration: 6.5 hours
  • Departure: Ebertstraße 24, 10117 Berlin
  • Departure Time: Between 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM
  • Includes: Expert tour guide

Starting things off on the right foot, we have the most comprehensive of the tours. Lasting 6.5 hours, it’s perfect to jump right into the deep end of Berlin’s history and really get a lay of the land.

The Private Berlin Complete History All Day Tour  is jam-packed not only with sights surrounding WWI and WWII, but plenty of sights that are far from the regular stops on most tours.

So you have plenty of time during the day, your tour will start out with you meeting your guide in the center of Berlin. As this is a private tour, you don’t have to worry about following a pack of people around or not being able to ask the guide any questions.

On the contrary, I found our guide to be super attentive and offer our feedback as to anything specific we’d be interested in seeing or learning more about.

While the order in which you see the landmarks may change, but typically you’ll start out with seeing the Brandenburg Gate and learn what important events happened there as well as how it came to be in the first place.

Expand To See More See Less

You’ll also get to see Museum Island, which sits right on the river and features 5 absolutely beautiful Prussian-style buildings containing different museums.

Of course, Checkpoint Charlie is a must, where you’ll see and learn about firsthand how difficult it was to be able to cross over to the other side of Berlin.

No tour of Berlin is complete without visiting the East Side Gallery, which is what’s left of the Berlin Wall and now features illuminating paintings that are expressive and oftentimes political.

While those are very popular tourist sites, you’ll also get to see lesser-known landmarks like ghost stations, the Soviet War Memorial, and much more. If you’re looking for a way to learn beyond the Wall and WWII, this is definitely the tour for you!

Tour Information & Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. the history of berlin: wwii private walking tour with locals.

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Departure: Oranienburger Str. 36, 10117 Berlin
  • Departure Time: Between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM
  • Includes: Private guide

Taking a guided tour should be so much more than just checking off landmarks and being read a cookie-cutter script anyone could look up. This tour will take you through the complex, passionate soul of Berlin where you’ll get to see the scars of history firsthand.

The History of Berlin: WWII Private Walking Tour with Locals  is one of the most educational and fascinating I’ve experienced, and it’s one history buffs shouldn’t miss!

You’ll meet your guide for a customized tour that starts at the New Synagogue where you’ll learn about Berlin’s Jewish community and enjoy its striking Moorish architecture.

Take a walk over to the Palace of Tears, where the Iron Curtain once held a grip over countless divided families. The guide does a fantastic job at explaining the Cold War and the differences between the Russian-occupied East and Allied-occupied West.

Come up to the massive Brandenburg Gate, where you’ll have time to take photos, followed by the somber Holocaust Memorial located just a short stroll away. This chilling expanse gives you the opportunity to reflect on Berlin’s darkest hours while learning about the Holocaust.

Another nearby site is where Hitler’s Bunker is located – while it’s underground and completely sealed, it’s still quite an impactful experience to see the area in person.

The UNESCO-listed Museum Island is a treasure trove of culture and artifacts, but the buildings they’re housed in are reason alone to explore the area. After this, you can choose to dive deeper into the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, or even Wilhelmstrasse and beyond.

The guide is there to help customize the experience according to you and your party’s interests, so it’s all down to what you want!

3. Berlin Bike Tour

  • Departure: Panoramastraße 1a, 10178 Berlin
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM
  • Includes: Beach cruiser bike, helmet

Undoubtedly one of the best ways to see Berlin is by bike, maximizing what you’re able to see in the span of a tour. The Berlin Bike Tour  is a great way to get some fresh air, a bit of exercise, and of course, learn all about the history of this unique capital metropolis!

You’ll get to see and learn all about the infamous Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate, plus plenty of “hidden gems” that will only enrich the experience further.

First off, I should mention that you get the choice to select either a half or full-day bike tour of Berlin. The full-day tour clocks in at nearly 7 hours (with plenty of breaks in between), while the half-day is about 2 to 3 hours.

If it’s your first time in Berlin and want to get to know the city quickly, I highly recommend the bike tour that takes you all over!

On your 2-wheeled expedition, you’ll first stop at the Berlin Wall Memorial, which is a real-life reminder of a brutally divided city and offers the chance for you to touch one of the last sections of the notorious wall that was put up overnight without warning.

Head over to where Hitler’s Bunker sits (sealed off from the public) and learn about the theories surrounding the things that happened there. Checkpoint Charlie was a stop that honestly wasn’t that visually captivating to me, but the history behind it was still very interesting to learn about.

After, check out the impressive Brandenburg Gate, as well as the Reichstag, which is the center of German politics and sits looking over the beautiful Spree River with a nice, tree-lined respite from the crowds.

Take a well-deserved break at a biergarten where you’ll get to sip a cold one in the open air, or even grab a pretzel or my favorite: currywurst. After refueling, you’ll then see Museum Island, Potsdamer Platz, and the Gendarmenmarkt.

4. Private Tour: Berlin by Trabant Stretch-Limousine

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: Check with tour operator
  • Includes: Light refreshments, private guide and transportation

Who says tours have to take place on foot or on a bus?! The Private Tour: Berlin by Trabant Stretch-Limousine  is perfect if you have a packed schedule but would still like to get to see most of Berlin.

It’s the shortest tour on this guide, making it ideal if you don’t have a ton of time in the day for a longer alternative. If you’d like to see Berlin from the lap of luxury, look no further than this excursion where you’ll be picked right up from your hotel – no need to deal with meeting places.

Your guide will pick you up in a comfortable stretch “Trabant” limo, which not only is unique to this part of the world but comes with tons of room for you and your party. This is a completely private tour, so it will really just be you and the rest of your party – no strangers and no massive groups.

Your guide is there to regale you with historical accounts of each area as you pass by important landmarks like Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin TV Tower (and Alexanderplatz in general), Museum Island, the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, Gendarmenmarkt, The Holocaust Memorial, and much more.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask the guide, as they’re quite personable and seem to know just about everything about Berlin’s history.

The limo comes with large windows with no obstruction of view, so it’s easy to see each site without getting out of the vehicle.

While at many points, the subject matter is obviously very somber and serious, the guide still made the experience quite fun and educational for us. They’ll let you stop at many of the sites for photos and if you’d like some time to walk around, it doesn’t seem to be an issue.

Don’t forget a delicious stop for some traditional currywurst, if you and your group feel like it!

5. Private Walking Tour: World War 2 and Cold War Sites in Berlin

  • Departure Time: Between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM
  • Includes: Professional guide

If you or anyone else in your group is a history buff or would simply like to learn more about the wartime history of Berlin, this is the best tour for you.

The Private Walking Tour: World War 2 and Cold War Sites in Berlin  is perfect if you have an afternoon or morning free for venturing around – there are 2 different options available regarding start times.

Keep in mind that while this tour will cover some of the most famous tourist sites, this is focused largely on the two wars’ sites and how they relate to history.

Just like most others on this guide, this excursion is also completely customized and tailored to you and your private party’s interests. Feel free to ask any questions or add feedback, and the guide will apply it to the tour.

Start out by meeting in your hotel lobby for a quick meet-and-greet before you get started on your journey through time, stepping into a history book!

The order of events may change depending on where your hotel is located, but usually the tour starts out with a visit to the Reichstag Building, which obviously played a huge role in WWII.

You’ll learn about those, like Claus von Stauffenberg, who literally risked their lives to oppose the regime, as well as the struggle from Stalingrad. The Brandenburg Gate is next, where you’ll also get to take photos before heading over to the Wall, the Holocaust Memorial, and Hitler’s Bunker.

I enjoyed seeing Prenzlauer Berg which is where you’ll see an old NKVD (KGB) prison which was later used by the Stasi (East German secret police), and learn how they got info from their prisoners.

The Topography of Terror was also quite interesting, located literally in the building where the SS, Gestapo, and SD kept their headquarters while the Nazis ruled. After this, you’ll have time to walk around the old Nazi airport closeby which I didn’t even know existed!

It was an excellent intro to sites in the city center, and included about 15-20 sites plus a lot of historical context [and some great gossip :-)] provided by our outstanding and entertaining guide, Maggie. She also directed us to a number of museums and locations worth visiting later in our stay. I highly recommend the tour! Christiana C. Feb. '24

Best Berlin tours

Tempelhof Abandoned Airport

1.  Tempelhof Abandoned Airport

Here’s a chance to explore an integral yet rarely seen part of German history: the abandoned Tempelhof airport. It's a glorious example of mid-century architecture and the largest architectural monument in Europe. During the Second World War, prisoners were forced to build weapons here, while shortly afterward allied forces flew in 2.3 million tonnes of food, coal, fuel and medicine following the Soviet blockade of the city.

Time Out tip: Public tours take place daily, except Tuesdays. Bookable private tours are also available.

Teufelsberg

2.  Teufelsberg

Like Tempelhof, Teufelsberg too played a part in the Cold War. This man-made hill in Grunewald – Berlin's second-highest ascent – once served as a listening station of the US Army. Now derelict, it provides a huge canvas for striking street art, which you can see if you join one of these torch-lit tours.

Time Out tip: Climb the highest dome for fantastic 360-degree views.

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp

3.  Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp

Not the activity if you're looking for something light-hearted; over five hours you’ll learn about the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, which the Nazis built in 1936 and where they imprisoned more than 200,000 people during the war. The Sachsenhausen Memorial reminds visitors of the victims’ suffering and commemorates the thousands of lives lost. All takings go towards the upkeep of the memorial.

Time Out tip:  Don't miss Barracks 38: a small camp that now houses a museum showcasing what life way really like for Jewish prisoners.

Refugee Voices Tours

4.  Refugee Voices Tours

This unique take on a city tour provides, in the organisers’ own words, ‘a platform to those who are so often talked about but rarely listened to’. Syrian refugees living in Berlin lead these tours, drawing comparisons between their unfortunate experiences of conflict and those of other minorities during Germany’s inter- and post-war years.

Time Out tip: You must reserve a spot before attending the tour, either through Facebook, WhatsApp or by email.

Berlin Secret Food Tour

5.  Berlin Secret Food Tour

Taste your way around the city by visiting the small restaurants and local eateries that makeup the capital's secret food scene. Wander through some of the city’s best under-the-radar spots, trying everything from currywurst to German beer, wine and kebabs on this boozy Berlin food tour.

Time Out tip: Your first stop, Mustafa Demir's Gemüse Kebap, has a vegan option for non-meat-eating members of the group.

Queer Berlin

6.  Queer Berlin

Berlin is quite easily one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cities in Europe. Find out why on this comprehensive tour, which explores the storied streets of gay districts Schöneberg and Kreuzberg. Learn about the historic criminalisation of homosexuality in Germany, and hear stories about  Berlin’s oldest gay bar and one o penly gay Nazi officer.

Time Out tip:  Don't miss the Holocaust memorial dedicated to all homosexuals persecuted by the Nazis and sent to concentration camps.

Alternative Berlin Street Art Tour and Workshop

7.  Alternative Berlin Street Art Tour and Workshop

Forget the galleries and take to the streets to discover Berlin’s wealth of urban art. Your guide – an artist, of course – will discuss the origins of this artform as you walk, revealing secret codes of conduct between artists and the political messages hidden in certain works.

Time Out tip: A metro ticket is required for this tour.

Hansa Studio

8.  Hansa Studio

Any self-respecting muso is aware of Berlin’s influence on the work of David Bowie and Iggy Pop. So don’t miss the chance to poke your head into the studio in West Berlin where the pair recorded (along with many other renowned acts). Because it’s a working studio, you can’t get in everywhere, but you’ll still be able to see a good chunk of the building.

Time Out tip: There are dedicated David Bowie tours in Berlin that include Hansa Studio in their itinerary.

Bundestag Guided Tour

9.  Bundestag Guided Tour

Various public tours of Berlin’s parliament, the Bundestag, can be booked when MPs aren’t in session. Visitors can explore the architecture and history of the imposing Reichstag building, as well as the more modern Paul Löbe and Jakob Kaiser wings next door.

Time Out tip: This is a great tour for those who want to explore the Reichstag's dome, as tickets include free entry.

Berlin Highlights Free Walking Tour

10.  Berlin Highlights Free Walking Tour

Put your money away, you won’t be needing that where we’re going. At least, not if you follow one of the Berlin Free Tour guides, who venture out come rain or shine to show willing walkers a ‘best of’ glimpse of the city. This includes the Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Brandenburg Gate and the site of Hitler’s Bunker.

Time Out tip: You don't have to worry if your tour will be cancelled on account of bad weather, as it's committed to running come rain or shine.

Eco-friendly catamaran

11.  Eco-friendly catamaran

Tired out your poor old feet by traipsing all over Berlin? Well, here’s one solution. Make the most of Berlin’s 180 kilometres of waterways by touring the city by catamaran. This boat tour is a particularly good one, not just because it takes you through sights such as the East Side Gallery and Museum Island, but because it’s also both quiet (noiseless, in fact) and environmentally friendly.

Time Out tip: Personal audio guide devices are available in six different languages.

The 15 best attractions in Berlin

The 15 best attractions in Berlin

While the most compelling historic sites are concentrated in Mitte, the city’s physical centre, don’t forget Berlin’s beloved Kieze (often translated as ‘neighbourhood’, the Kiez is actually a smaller cluster of residential streets) – made up of attractions in their own right. Guided Day Trips from Berlin

Sanssouci Palace

Potsdam and Sanssouci Palace

One of the most popular day trips from Berlin is Potsdam, since it’s easily accessible by S-bahn or regional train and only takes around 30 minutes to reach from the city center. The main attraction of Potsdam is Sanssouci Palace, a former royal residence with stunning Rococo architecture, sprawling English gardens, vineyard terraces, and classical artwork.

Since there’s so much to see and sights are pretty spread out, we recommend booking this stress-free guided tour of the palace from Berlin which already includes bus transportation with live commentary, entrance tickets, and audio guides.

Click here to book a day trip to Potsdam and Sanssouci Palace!

Sachsenhausen Memorial

Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial

Sachsenhausen was one of the most infamous Nazi concentration camps that held political prisoners during WWII. It’s located in Oranienburg, a town about 25 minutes north of Berlin via public transportation and definitely worth visiting as a day trip.

The museum offers exhibitions showcasing the history of the camp and focusing on the life stories of the former prisoners. Because of the sensitive nature of site, we highly recommend doing a guided walking tour with a professional. In this comprehensive tour, the guide will bring you to key landmarks like Barracks 38 and 39, Tower A, the original Camp Prison, Station Z, and more. The tour is nuanced and pays utmost respect to the subject and the victims.

  • Guided tours give you insights into the local culture or uncover hidden gems that you probably wouldn’t find by yourself. And not only is it a good way to connect with locals, but you can also meet and talk with other fellow travelers during the tours.

Tip: It’s always a good idea to book guided tours and especially guided full-day trips in advance. Some of them, like those in popular destinations, can sell out pretty quickly. This is especially true during peak season.

Booking in advance secures your spot and sometimes tour operators even offer discounts for early bookings or offer a generous cancelation option. Some tours also have limited capacity, so if you’re traveling as a group booking and planning ahead is crucial.

Are you looking for the best informative tours of Sachsenhausen from Berlin?

For those seeking to learn more about the dark history of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, there is no better way than by taking a guided tour of the site from Berlin.

As a history buff, visiting important historical sites is something I always try to do on my travels.

When I visited Berlin, I knew I wanted to take a day trip to Sachsenhausen, the closest former Nazi Concentration Camp to Berlin. Sachsenhausen is just about 45 minutes away, making it easy to visit on a day trip from Berlin .

The best Sachsenhausen tours from Berlin provide an informative and engaging experience for travelers interested in learning more about this tragic period in history.

While you can visit Sachsenhausen on your own, having a tour guide can be immensely helpful in gaining a more comprehensive understanding of Sachsenhausen’s history.

If you're planning on including a day trip to Sachsenhausen in your Berlin itinerary , consider booking one of these informative guided tours of Sachsenhausen from Berlin to make the most of your visit.

The very most important thing to remember when visiting Sachsenhausen is that you are visiting a location where innocent prisoners were tortured and murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.

During your visit, keep the history of the site in mind.

Avoid taking disrespectful photos (this is not the place for posed pictures or cute selfies), talking loudly, or behaving inappropriately in any way.

Having a great tour guide who is knowledgeable and engaging can really make a tour great, which is why the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Tour from Berlin is one of the very best Sachsenhausen guided tours.

On this tour, you'll meet your expert historic guide in the Berlin city center at 10:00 AM before boarding the S Bahn train to Oranienburg, the city where Sachsenhausen is located.

Important Note: The train tickets to and from Oranienburg aren't included in the tour cost. You'll need a Berlin transit ticket that includes zones A, B, and C, which is about €8 for the round-trip to and from Oranienburg.

A valid Berlin ABC Zone WelcomeCard also works.

Once you arrive in Oranienburg, you'll walk with your guide for 20-30 minutes to the memorial. Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes!

At the site, your guide will lead you around the site, teaching you about the history of the camp's origin, the timeline of the atrocities that were committed at the camp, and tell stories of the brave prisoners and those who were lucky to survive.

The outstanding guides truly make this tour one of the best. The guides are expert historians who are licensed and trained by the Sachsenhausen Memorial Authority.

"Great tour with a guide who was incredibly knowledgeable and an excellent communicator. The camp would be difficult to navigate on your own so having a guide walking you through the different portions and giving context was essential in my opinion." - Ruben S. ( Read more reviews )

As a bonus, the tour provider makes a €3 donation to the Memorial Authority on behalf of each guest, which contributes to the upkeep of the Memorial.

Although the tour is a somber experience, you'll return to Berlin with a greater understanding of the history of Sachsenhausen and the prisoners who were held there.

In my opinion, this is the best guided tour of Sachsenhausen from Berlin . And with nearly 2000 5-star reviews, it seems that other travelers agree!

If you want the same great tour as the one above but with private transportation, then this tour is for you!

The Sachensenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Small Group Bus Tour from Berlin is nearly the exact same tour as the above Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial tour, except it includes private bus transportation rather than taking public transportation to Sachsenhausen.

It's also a couple of hours shorter because you'll be driving directly to Sachsenhausen instead of taking the train and then walking to the camp.

After meeting the group, you'll board the air-conditioned bus that will take you directly to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp.

There, the expertly-trained historian guide will lead you on a tour of the camp and memorial, teaching a masterclass in World War II history as you walk through the camp's barracks, administrative buildings, and crematoriums.

Phil was our guide and he shared valuable and informative historic background before reaching the camp. The details he provided on site brought to life what happened there. Highly recommend the visit and Phil as guide. - Pamela K. ( Read more reviews )

After you meet your guide and fellow tourmates, you'll board a private bus and head towards Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp and Memorial for a guided visit of the camp.

There, your guide will take you on an educational tour around the camp. You'll learn about how the camp was run, the different jobs that were forced upon the prisoners, and more about the camp's history.

Next, you'll board the bus again and head towards Potsdam, the former Slavic town turned Royal residence.

Enjoy a guided walk of the palaces and gardens of Potsdam before having some free time to explore on your own.

After some time in Potsdam, you'll board the bus again and head back to Berlin while reflecting on your day.

Tours are led by bilingual English and Spanish guides. You'll be packing in a lot of exploration in just 7 hours, which some travelers said felt rushed, but this is a great way to see a lot if you have limited time.

You can independently visit Sachsenhausen from Berlin without taking a guided tour.

To get to Sachsenhausen, take the S Bahn or a regional train from Berlin to Oranienburg Station (S Oranienburg Bhf).

You can easily get to Oranienburg from pretty much any station in Berlin. Use Rome2Rio to find out the best route and trains to take from your starting point.

One of the easiest stations to leave Berlin from is Friedrichstraße . From there, the trip to Oranienburg will take about 45 minutes.

To take the train to Oranienburg, you'll need an ABC zone ticket, which is €3.80 each way. A Berlin ABC Zone WelcomeCard will also work.

Once you get to Oranienburg, you have a couple of options for getting to Sachsenhausen.

You can walk from the train station to the memorial, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Bring comfy shoes if you plan on walking because you'll probably be doing a lot of walking and standing at the memorial as well.

The bus (#804 and #821) also runs from Oranienburg Station to a stop called Sachsenhausen Gedenkstätte , which is a short walk from the memorial. Taking the bus is the easiest way to get to Sachsenhausen from Oranienburg Station.

Even if you don't opt for a guided tour of Sachsenhausen from Berlin, I highly recommend taking one of the public guided tours offered on-site.

These tours cost €3 and run twice on Saturdays, once at 11:00 AM and again at 2:00 PM.

If you're not visiting on a day that the guided tours are held, you can rent an audio guide for €3.50.

You can learn more about the guided tours and audio guides on the official Sachsenhausen Memorial website .

One of the most important things to bring, or wear, on a tour of Sachsenhausen is a comfortable pair of shoes.

While touring the site, you'll be doing a lot of walking and standing. Plus, some tours require you to walk to and from the memorial from the train station, which takes about 30 minutes.

Keep an eye on the weather forecast as well. For much of the tour, you'll be outside, so you'll want to have a warm coat if it's cold outside and a rain jacket or umbrella if it's raining.

It's also a good idea to bring some snacks and a reusable water bottle as most tours don't include food or drinks.

Most guided tours of Sachsenhausen from Berlin last between 4-6 hours, depending on whether you take public or private transportation.

You can plan on spending at least 2-3 hours exploring the memorial. The guided tours offered at the memorial last for 2 hours.

As you can see, you have quite a few great options for guided tours of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp and Memorial from Berlin.

You can opt for a cheaper tour that takes public transportation or splurge a little for a great tour with private transport. Or, if you want to pack a lot into one day, choose a Sachsenhausen + Potsdam combo day tour!

Taking a guided tour of Sachsenhausen rather than going on your own gives you a deeper insight into the history of the camp.

You'll hear from historians who are experts on the site – not only do they know the history of Sachsenhausen, but they also know the stories of the prisoners who were held there.

After your tour, you'll return to Berlin (or your home city) with a new understanding of World War II history that is deeper than anything you could read about in a textbook.

Autism makes travel a challenge. Here’s how I learned to cope

Busy places and unexpected events used to send me into meltdown on holiday. An autism diagnosis helped me to adapt my plans and rediscover the joy of travelling

W andering hand-in-hand through the medieval streets of Bologna, my boyfriend and I were in awe of the sweeping porticoes and distinctive rust-red brickwork of the city. It was our first holiday together. We’d wanted to find somewhere beyond the obvious that would marry our respective interests in architecture and history. Bologna was the perfect fit.

We admired the Church of Santa Maria della Vita , with its imposing baroque interior, lavishly decorated in colourful frescoes and marble carvings. We caught a little red and blue express train up into the hills to the Santuario della Madonna di San Luca , and climbed the bell tower of the Basilica di San Petronio for panoramic views across the city.

But after one particularly long, hot day on our feet, with our stomachs clamouring to be fed, my mood began to shift. With the setting of the sun came the rising of my rage, as we struggled to agree on where we wanted to eat. In a city nicknamed La Grassa (“the fat one”), we weren’t lacking in options; in fact, it was the sheer number of well-reviewed eateries that was overwhelming.

A wide, sunlit street in Bologna with Asinelli tower in the centre, and people using a pedestrian crossing.

Eventually we decided on pizza, and my boyfriend anxiously led us through sun-dappled alleyways, seeking out a little hole-in-the-wall spot with stellar reviews on Google. Looking back now, I’m ashamed of my reaction once we arrived. Instead of excitedly tucking into the steaming, cheese-drenched deliciousness before me, I burst into tears, refusing to order. And why?

Because they were slices .

In my mind, getting pizza meant that we’d be presented with a whole pizza. The idea of just grabbing a slice or two felt abhorrently wrong. It truly felt to me, in that moment, like I was being asked to do the impossible. Instead, we had to find a standard bistro and get me the right kind of pizza. Scrolling through photographs from that trip for this article, I find a snapshot of my boyfriend opposite me at the table, looking as if he’d just (barely) survived the fury of the Visigoths during the sacking of Rome.

It wasn’t until three years later – in spring 2020, when I was diagnosed as autistic – that this fragment of my life story, and many others like it, finally began to make sense.

B eing autistic means that life is a challenge, every day, in myriad tiny ways most others cannot see. Autistic people often grapple with sensory, social and communication challenges that manifest differently in each of us. As a toddler, for instance, I couldn’t stand the touch of grass on my skin. My parents could pop me down on a blanket by our tent during camping trips, safe in the knowledge that I wouldn’t stray. The same went for sand – putting me down to build a sandcastle on the beach only led to banshee-esque wailing until someone picked me up. When I got older, I preferred to stay by the tent and read my books than risk the chaotic din of the campsite playground. I’ve also always found it difficult when confronted with the unexpected. That could be anything, from a last-minute change of plans to something simply not turning out the way I’d pictured it in my head.

Relentlessly busy places are a terrifying prospect for those of us predisposed to sensory overwhelm. The best way I can describe how I experience this sensation is to ask you to imagine that the whole world has climbed into your chest. It then sits there, heavy and loud and bright, thrumming with energy, too much energy, more than any one person could hold within themselves. And yet, that’s what’s expected of us, day in, day out.

Fortunately, societal awareness of how autistic people interact with public spaces has grown over the past few years, thanks to the rise of lived experiences shared on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. The thriving autistic creator communities online were a lifebelt for me when I was first diagnosed, providing both insights into my own behaviour and suggesting coping mechanisms.

Initiatives such as the sunflower lanyard scheme are also having a real impact on how employees in train stations, airports, bus terminals and so on are trained in making these places more accessible to those with hidden disabilities. What I have learned is that many challenges can be overcome with sufficient planning and support from those around me. Through much trial and error over the last four years, I’m making real progress towards learning how to adapt my holiday plans to accommodate my needs. I now have a self-made kit for mitigating sensory overwhelm that I take with me whenever I travel: sunglasses, noise-isolating earplugs, noise-cancelling headphones, a fidget toy or two and a safe food to snack on (a favourite cereal bar, for example). Having avoided meltdowns by using these items in the past, I now can’t imagine travelling without them.

The process of writing my book, The Autistic Guide to Adventure , has provided many useful insights too. Designed to introduce younger readers from the autistic community to a variety of different outdoor activities, the book suggests how to best approach them from sensory, social and communication perspectives.

Take kayaking, for instance, a popular holiday activity in the UK thanks to our miles upon miles of public waterways and easily accessible coastline. I’ve kayaked on family holidays since a young age. Before I knew I was autistic, however, I’d never have thought to give myself extra time to get used to sitting in a new boat in a new location, testing the feel of a buoyancy aid or holding the paddle properly. Yet something as simple as taking the opportunity to do that – on dry land, before the kayak even gets near the water – can make a real difference to how comfortable and confident an autistic person might feel about trying this new activity. Most activity providers are understanding and would be happy to facilitate this, if you let them know in advance.

Allie on a pebble beach with a dog and an ice-cream.

Other simple adaptations to recreational activities include using walking poles for all levels of hiking – not only on mountains – and bringing an inflatable for wild swimming. These help to maintain balance, something that many autistic people find hard because of difficulties regulating their vestibular system.

There will never be one single trip or destination that’s perfect for every autistic person, because our individual strengths, struggles and support needs are so different. But if we each plan ahead and choose what to do or where to go based on our known sensory sensitivities, communication preferences and social battery life, every trip has the potential to be perfect just for us .

M ost recently, my boyfriend and I took a much-anticipated trip to the Arctic Circle, visiting Tromsø. There’s a key difference between this holiday and our stay in Bologna five years earlier: the weather. It’s common for autistic people to have strong preferences when it comes to temperature – in my case, I’ll always choose cold over hot.

That’s why Tromsø in December was a sensory dream for me. Plunged into polar night, the light was never brighter than a muted lilac haze for a few short hours around midday. The temperature was consistently below freezing; the snow lay piled in marshmallow-soft heaps along pavements and roadsides. It was as far a cry from the lively streets and humid air of summer in Bologna as you could get, and it was perfect.

The evening light is lilac, reflected on the icy water.

Learning from previous experience, we planned exactly where we wanted to eat during the trip. We spent several cheerful mealtimes huddled by the fire pit at Raketten Bar and enjoyed Pølse , a hotdog stand in a sunshine-yellow kiosk dating back to 1911.

Autistic people often prefer the company of animals to other humans, but it’s not something I’d ever thought to factor into my travel plans before. In Tromsø, we ended up spending three out of our five days on activities involving animals: huskies, whales and reindeer. It was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions we could have made.

The joy of losing myself in a frenzied pack of newfound canine friends radiates from my face in photos from the day we went husky sledding.

Given that travel is something I treasure, it’s a relief to realise that my ability to do it is not limited by being neurodivergent. On the contrary, I truly believe some of my many travel experiences have been – and will continue to be – enhanced by the fact that my brain works on a different wavelength. When I close my eyes, I can still see the play of lavender light on the snow-capped mountains surrounding Tromsø. I’m immediately transported back to a place that felt like home to my soul, soothed without having to take even a step outside.

Understanding travel insurance for seniors

Before diving into the specifics, it's essential to understand what travel insurance is and why it's particularly important for senior travelers. The best travel insurance offers financial protection against unexpected events affecting your trip, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage.

Types of coverage

  • Medical Coverage: Ensures your medical expenses are covered in case of illness or injury.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage: Provides reimbursement if your trip is canceled or cut short due to unforeseen events.
  • Baggage Coverage: Covers loss, damage, or theft of personal items during your trip.

Benefits of travel insurance for seniors

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you're covered in case of emergencies can make your travel stress-free.
  • Financial Protection: Shields you from potentially overwhelming medical costs and trip cancellations fees.
  • Assistance Services: Many plans offer 24/7 assistance services, providing help whenever and wherever you need it.

Making the most of your plan

After choosing a plan, it's crucial to understand your policy fully and know what services are available to you in case of an emergency.

Understanding your policy

  • Read the fine print and understand the claims process to avoid surprises.

Emergency assistance services

  • Familiarize yourself with the emergency assistance services offered by your plan and keep all necessary contact information handy.

How to pick senior travel insurance

It's wise to compare several different travel insurance policies for the best coverage and pricing, as premiums vary widely between insurers and depend on factors like your age and travel destination.

That said, some of the more essential coverages to look for if you're a senior citizen include:

  • Travel medical coverage - This coverage will pay for your medical bills outside the US.
  • Medical evacuation coverage - If you're injured or become sick while traveling, this coverage will transport you to the nearest hospital or even back home if your condition necessitates it.
  • Preexisting conditions - Coverage for known health conditions. You'll need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time period from when you book your trip to qualify for a preexisting condition waiver .
  • Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
  • Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
  • Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.
  • Lost luggage insurance - This coverage will reimburse you up to a specified amount if your bags get lost en route.

Of these, the most critical to note are whether or not your policy covers preexisting conditions and the limits for travel medical insurance and emergency medical evacuation.

Some insurance companies offer a waiver that will cover preexisting conditions. You'll have to follow the requirements for adding a waiver to your policy, like insuring the entire cost of your trip. Or purchase the policy within a specific time after making your first trip deposit payments.

You'll also want to find a policy with high maximum limits for travel medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage. These types of expenses can be substantial, so you want to have appropriate coverage.

When comparing senior travel insurance options, we looked at the following factors to evaluate each travel insurance provider:

  • Coverage limits: We looked at each travel insurance company's coverage amounts for benefits like medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
  • Flexibility: We looked at how customizable a policy is, so you can choose what your travel insurance policy covers .
  • Coverage for preexisting conditions: Preexisting conditions are one of the more critical factors for travel insurance for senior citizens, so we looked at travel insurance companies that offer the best coverage for preexisting conditions.
  • Price: We compared travel insurance providers offering reasonable basic and comprehensive coverage rates.
  • Benefits geared towards seniors: We compared travel insurance companies that offer solid coverage for senior citizens, like medical evacuation, COVID-19 coverage, and trip cancellation.

You can read more about our insurance rating methodology here.

Seniors should look for travel insurance policies that offer comprehensive medical coverage, including for preexisting conditions and emergency medical evacuation. They should also consider policies with higher coverage limits to ensure adequate protection. Additionally, seniors should seek travel insurance plans that provide 24/7 assistance services, as well as coverage for trip cancellations, interruptions, and baggage protection.

The cost of senior travel insurance coverage can vary depending on your age, overall health, state of residence, travel destination, and length of your trip. However, assuming all other factors are the same, you'll pay more for travel insurance at 70 than at 30.

All travel insurance companies, except World Nomads, included in this guide offer coverage for pre-existing medical conditions as long as you buy your policy within the qualifying period from when you placed your trip deposit.

Allianz is the best travel insurance for seniors due to its wide array of medical coverages and emergency medical transport. Allianz also offers multi-trip insurance policies , which could make sense for seniors who travel frequently.

In some instances, travel insurance companies will have age eligibility restrictions, often only insuring people 80 years old and younger.
