As spring melts into summer, these are best beach holidays in may for sunshine chasers.
I t’s nearly summer in northern Europe — but not quite. You want toastier climes, ideally in easy reach. Luckily, this time of year leaves you spoilt for choice — not only are the Mediterranean’s most southerly islands warming up to beach and pool perfection, many mid and long-haul destinations remain bright and breezy.
Try a Greek or Turkish resort before the June crowds and price surge, or a Caribbean island post-peak winter. Be aware that Middle Eastern favourites such as the UAE get uncomfortably hot at this time of year, while parts of southeast Asia are moving into monsoon season. Here are the best beach holiday destinations in May.

While some of southern Europe still sees chilly days and patches of drizzle in May, southern Turkey is heating up. In the coastal resorts of Antalya , Bodrum , Izmir and Marmaris, you’ll find daytime temperatures of around 26C, a sea warm enough to swim in and very little rainfall. You’ll also snap up some bargains on beach hotels and villas in this already affordable nation, just over four hours’ flight from the UK. Caresse, a Luxury Collection Resort, is in buzzy Bodrum.

2. Dominican Republic
Much of the Caribbean stays warm and not too humid into May, with fewer tourists meaning cheaper prices than in the first quarter of the year. The Dominican Republic is especially affordable, with temperatures from the mid-20s up to 30C, few showers and warm, swimmable waters. Most package holidays from the UK go to Punta Cana, but look into the Puerto Plata, Sosua and Cabarete areas for some of the most dazzling beaches. Coral Level Iberostar is a good-value all inclusive by the white-sand Bavaro beach.
• Best things to do in the Dominican Republic
3. Cape Verde
This group of islands just off the Senegalese coast stays warm throughout the year, but May is a lovely choice to visit Cape Verde with temperatures ranging from 20C to 26C — balmy, but not scorching. There’s very little rain and the sea is around a swimmable 23C. It’s further afield but great package deals can be snapped up a few months ahead; Tui flies direct to Sal island in just under six hours. The authentic Hotel Morabeza sits on golden Santa Maria beach.

On cloudier days, take in cultural hotspots Seville , Malaga or Granada . El Oceano is a good-value beachfront hideaway close to La Cala de Mijas.

7. Malta and Gozo
These southern Mediterranean specks are also bathed in mid-20C sunshine come May, with very low rainfall. Fewer tourists in spring make it a glorious time to explore these islands. The Westin Dragonara has two private beaches and generous pool areas.

10. Seychelles
These idyllic, white-sanded Indian Ocean isles are drenched in sunshine during May, with little rain and a comfortable breeze — meanwhile, their honeymoon-perfect rivals, the Maldives, are moving into their wet season. Low winds mean snorkellers will find the seas around the Seychelles calm with excellent visibility, while the highest temperatures are at a reliable, tropical 28-30C — the ideal escape for true paradise beaches in late spring. 20 Best Beaches to Visit in May
By Kieran Meeke
Last updated: March 26th, 2024

Spring is a great time for lazing on a beach to warm up after winter. But where are the best beaches to visit in May?
The Caribbean is an easy choice, with weather that’s mild and a near-endless array of exciting destinations. From Aruba to St. Thomas, you’ll find warm waters for swimming and welcoming bars.
However, there are also good beaches everywhere from Portugal to the Galapagos Islands. After all, the fall in the southern hemisphere can be just as pleasant for beach-going as spring in the north.
Galleon Beach, Antigua
Galleon Beach is one of the remoter beaches on Antigua and is best reached by water taxi from English Harbour. It’s a small, quiet beach, backed by several small hotels and with a good restaurant.
Go snorkeling and you might spot anything from a turtle to a lobster. The hike up and back to Shirley Heights is also a great way to take in some remarkable views.
In May, Antigua is starting to warm up, with temperatures averaging 85ºF and similar sea temperatures. There is a chance of rain, although you’re more likely to experience high humidity and overcast skies than showers.
Las Bachas, Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos
Las Bachas in Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos
May brings long, bright sunny days to the Galapagos , with temperatures around 84°F. Sea temperatures of 73°F make this a good month for swimming as well as sunbathing.
Las Bachas is named for two rusting barges abandoned by the US Army after WWII. “Bachas” is the local Spanish pronunciation of the words “barges”. The wrecks are largely buried in the sand now but the name remains.
This long, sandy beach is perfect for swimming in May. Its two small coastal ponds are home to pink American flamingos that live year-round on Santa Cruz .
Magens Bay, St. Thomas, USVI
Magens Bay, St. Thomas
This lovely beach on the north side of St. Thomas is so popular that it charges a small entry fee. That’s worth paying to see its tropical beauty for yourself.
The horseshoe-shaped beach in St. Thomas is a perfectly sheltered spot for sunbathing or swimming. You can also rent kayaks or hike to the scenic viewpoint at Mountain Top.
The US Virgin Islands enjoy great weather in May, with average temperatures of 85°F and water around 81°F, blissfully warm for swimming and snorkeling.
Eagle Beach, Aruba
Often voted the best beach in the Caribbean, Eagle Beach is famed for its two gnarled fofoti trees. They make a perfect foreground for photos of its powdery white sand and clear blue waters.
The Aruban beach has sunshades, cabanas, bars, and restaurants to give you respite from the Caribbean sun. In May, you can expect temperatures of 89ºF, but with a cooling breeze.
Snorkeling and diving are popular activities on Aruba , and Eagle Beach is home to four species of sea turtle. Activities such as parasailing and jet-skiing are also available.
Sorobon Beach, Bonaire
Bonaire enjoys the same warm May weather as its neighboring islands of Aruba and Curaçao.
Sorobon Beach sits on the east side of the island, protected by the offshore reef. This lends it calm water for swimming and plenty of sealife for snorkelers.
This beach in Bonaire is also known for having some of the world’s best windsurfing. You can take lessons in windsurfing or parasailing, or rent a paddleboard.
Mambo Beach, Curaçao
Mambo Beach on Curaçao sits beside a busy entertainment complex. From restaurants to shopping, there is plenty else to do near at hand.
Mambo Beach is one of the best beaches in Curaçao , a perfect stretch of white sand, with the clear water the “ABC” islands are famed for. That water is excellent for snorkeling if you need to cool down from the Caribbean sunshine.
Just a few miles from downtown Willemstad, the beach can be crowded in high season, but May sees fewer people. You should have no problem renting a sun-lounger, palapa, or cabana to relax in.
Horseshoe Bay Beach, Bermuda
Ranked among the world’s top ten beaches, Horseshoe Beach in Bermuda is definitely one of the best beaches to visit in May. Its pink coral sands and clear waters are enticing as temperatures average 76℉.
The crescent curve that gives the beach its name shelters its waters and raises their temperature. Swim or snorkel on the coral reef to admire the marine life that thrives underwater.
As well as watersports, including paddleboarding, you can take guided hikes along the coast. Bars and food stalls will make sure you never go thirsty or hungry.

Pearl Island, Nassau, Bahamas
Pearl Island in Nassau, Bahamas
Pearl Island is the much-photographed home of the “swimming” pigs. This private island is reached by a short ferry ride from Nassau .
There are two pretty white sand beaches here, both well served with leisure facilities. Whether you want to kayak or trampoline, you’ll find plenty of options..
Two bars serve traditional Bahamian food and plenty of cooling drinks. In May, Bahama’s daily temperatures can hit 85°F, making this a wonderful time to visit. As for those swimming swine, they’re delightful, especially the piglets, and will join you for a dip in return for tidbits.
Golden Bay, Malta
May is an ideal time to visit Malta , as the weather is at its best. You miss the extreme heat of summer, any breezes are cooling, and there is little rain.
Golden Bay, one of Malta’s most popular beaches , is also much less crowded than in peak season. Stretch out to enjoy its lovely soft, reddish sand and scenic high cliffs.
The best way to reach this northwestern beach is by boat tour, seeing the Blue Lagoon and Popeye Village on the way. While here, go horseback riding or rent a kayak to explore around the bay’s headlands.
Canet d’en Berenguer Beach, Valencia, Spain
Canet d’en Berenguer Beach in Valencia, Spain
Only 30 minutes north of Valencia , this remote beach is at its best in May, when it’s mostly frequented by local people. The Mediterranean water is still too cool for swimming, but the sunny spring days are perfect otherwise.
This popular beach in Valencia is of golden sand, although some areas are pebbly. There are a number of chiringuitos (beach bars) for drinks or quick toes-in-the-sand meals.
Steady winds make the beach ideal for windsurfing and kite surfing, while surfers also take to the waves. However, walking the promenade or sitting in a bar to enjoy the sea views are still the most popular activities.
Praia do Guincho, Lisbon, Portugal
Praia do Guincho in Lisbon, Portugal
Guincho is a deep, V-shaped beach backed by the green hills of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Only 35 minutes from Lisbon , its Atlantic Coast wildness and strong winds deter casual beachgoers.
Instead, the reliable waves bring bodyboarders, surfers, and windsurfers to enjoy their thrills. Local restaurants that specialize in seafood are also very much part of Guincho’s appeal.
In May, the late spring weather makes this part of Portugal ideal for visitors. You can expect bright, sunny days before the intense heat of summer arrives.
Fegina Beach, Cinque Terre, Italy
Fegina Beach in Cinque Terre, Italy
The Unesco World Heritage Site of Cinque Terre is a place of pretty fishing villages and awesome scenery. The five towns of Cinque Terre are Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
Fegina Beach is the beach nearest to Monterosso al Mare, the largest of these villages. The beach—nearly as much pebble as sand—is a place to rent a deck chair to enjoy views of the blue Ligurian Sea.
In May, the mild weather brings the hillsides into bloom but the crowds are yet to arrive. After the beach, find a restaurant on the narrow streets of Monterosso to sample the very best in Italian cooking.

Banje Beach, Dubrovnik, Croatia
Banje Beach in Dubrovnik, Croatia
Only five minutes from the city walls of Dubrovnik , Banje Beach is a great urban beach. Its contrast to the looming battlements behind it is beloved of photographers.
In May, daily highs average around 70°F, so it’s still a little cool for swimming. Not for sunbathing, though, and as this beach in Dubrovnik is shingly, you will want to rent a lounger rather than lie on a towel.
That means accessing the beach club which covers half the beach. It’s well worth it to enjoy a drink or a meal, watch the harbor traffic, and take in the views of Lokrum Island.
Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman
The fact it is just over five miles long is probably the only criticism you can make of Seven Mile Beach. Starting on the edge of Georgetown, the capital of Grand Cayman , it stretches invitingly along the edge of the incredibly clear blue water.
You really can’t come to the Cayman Islands without trying out the fabulous snorkeling or diving. In May, water temperatures will be in the low 80s, so you may not even need a wetsuit.
Perivolos Beach, Santorini, Greece
Perivolos Beach in Santorini, Greece
The volcanic rock of Santorini gives Perivolos Beach its distinctive black sand. In summer, that makes it very hot underfoot, but it’s one of the best beaches in May for the sheer novelty of the sparkling volcanic sand.
Spring brings warm, sunny days and fewer visitors than in the summer season. The restaurants and resorts are delighted to see you after their winter lull, making this a great time to visit Santorini .
Perivolos Beach offers water sports facilities that include scuba diving and jet skiing. However, its restaurants serving delicious Greek cuisine rich with fresh seafood are the main draw.
Faliraki Beach, Rhodes, Greece
Faliraki Beach in Rhodes, Greece
Faliraki Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Rhodes . You’ll understand why when you see its golden sands and clear turquoise waters.
Stretching for more than two miles, the beach is lined with sun-loungers, bars, and restaurants. If you like seafood, you’ve come to the right place.
The cooler weather makes May a great time for hiking on Rhodes , or seeing its many historic attractions. It’s typically warm (70-75ºF), but the crowds don’t arrive until later in the season.
Elia Beach, Mykonos, Greece
Elia Beach in Mykonos, Greece
Elia Beach sits on the southern shores of Mykonos , only seven miles from Mykonos Town. It’s the longest beach on this beautiful island and calm water here adds to the appeal of its soft golden sand.
A sea of colorful sun-loungers, this Mykonos beach is also well served with water sports. You can try anything from windsurfing to banana boat rides, with experienced instructors.
Being in Greece, good restaurants and bars are a given. May is when the summer season is beginning to get going, with many of the bars holding opening parties.
Kourouta Beach, Katakolon, Greece
Kourouta Beach in Katakolon, Greece
With some ten miles of golden sand washed by the Ionian Sea, Kourouta Beach has appeal for everyone. At its start is a resort area busy with friendly Greek tavernas, while sand dunes and pine forests fringe the more remote stretches.
The nearby resort of Katakolon is the traditional entry point for visiting the ancient ruins of Olympia. This birthplace of the Olympic Games, first held in 776 BCE, is still a major attraction.
Rather more earthly delights await you on this Greek beach , with its golden sands and fine local food. Rental companies offer windsurfing and other sport activities if you want to ready your Olympic body for the coming summer.
Haeundae Beach, Busan, South Korea
Haeundae Beach in Busan, South Korea
Haeundae is the most popular beach in Busan for good reason. It enjoys long golden sands, scenic views of the city, and an energetic atmosphere.
In May, temperatures can reach 77°F, with relatively low humidity, making this a perfect time to visit. At the end of May, you can also see the remarkable Busan Sand Sculpture Festival.
Haeundae is backed by a promenade lined with skyscraper apartments, shops, cafés, restaurants, and bars. Busan Aquarium and the nature forest on Dongbaek Island are great destinations for a short walk.
Sandy Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii
Sandy Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii
If you want to watch the legendary surfers of Hawaii , Sandy Beach on the island of Oahu is a great place to go. “Sandy’s” is famous for its powerful shore break, safe only for experienced bodyboarders and surfers.
Strong currents and powerful waves make swimming hazardous for everyone else. Listen to the lifeguards and stay ashore to enjoy the fine golden sand and dune-backed picnic areas.
During May, temperatures here are ideal: 80 to 85ºF with little rain. Even better, visitors are fewer in number—except during Memorial Day weekend at the very end of the month.

It’s spring in the mountains, and diehard skiers can probably find some snow for a few late-season runs, but May is also an ideal time to explore two of the country’s best national parks before the summer crowds arrive. Grand Teton National Park’s Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center opens May 1, and most Yellowstone National Park roads open in late April. May can be a great time to spot wildlife in both parks as deer, elk, and moose begin calving, and Old West Days and Elkfest bring a festive atmosphere to town. The Aerial Tram opens mid-month for scenic rides offering stunning views of the Tetons and valley below.
Where to Stay: The Cloudveil , voted one of the top hotels in Wyoming by T+L readers, is located right on the Town Square and features an expansive rooftop terrace. Boutique Hotel Jackson offers the Sacajawea Library, filled with Western literature and art, plus upscale amenities.

May is shoulder season on eastern Long Island, a time to enjoy local wineries, fresh produce, walks on the beach, and dining at restaurants that will soon have waiting lists for reservations. Take a bike ride or drive to Montauk Point State Park to hike on nature trails, stroll along the shore, or visit Montauk Lighthouse, the oldest in New York State. “May is amazing. Asparagus are popping along with fresh lettuces, green onions, peas, and other tasty green delicacies,” James Christopher Tracy, winemaker and partner at Channing Daughters Winery , tells T+L. “Spring also brings the release of new pink wines and fresh whites like sauvignon blanc and pinot grigio. Longer days, warmer temperatures, and yummy stuff everywhere — what could be better than the East End in May!”

The weather is cool and sunny, ideal for being outdoors for a round of golf or a visit to Garland Ranch Regional Park where there are hiking trails, a waterfall, and gorgeous views. A drive towards the ocean takes you to Carmel-by-the-Sea’s art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and Carmel Beach. The Carmel Art Festival is set for May 17-19 with entertainment and art for sale. When you’re thirsty, head to Carmel Valley’s wineries and Carmel-by-the-Sea’s tasting rooms for a glass of the local vino.

About 70 miles north of Miami, the coastal cities and beach towns of Florida’s Palm Beaches offer upscale shopping, plush resorts, and nearly 50 miles of beaches. In West Palm Beach, the Norton Museum of Art features an impressive collection and special exhibits, best explored during “Art After Dark” on Friday evenings. A National Historic Landmark, the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach is housed in the opulent Gilded Age mansion once owned by Henry Flagler. The annual SunFest waterfront music festival is set for May 3-5 in West Palm Beach, with headliners including Nelly and Bill Idol.
Where to Stay: White Elephant Palm Beach is a luxury boutique hotel housed in a renovated 1924 building. Golfers will love the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, with six courses and a spa, and The Breakers was voted one of the best resorts in Florida in the 2023 World’s Best Awards. “Charleston is a year-round destination, but May brings something special,” according to Tyler Wright Friedman, founder of Walk and Talk Charleston . “Spring is turning to summer, and it’s time for the beach and boats, but also Spoleto and the arts.” The acclaimed annual performing arts festival, Spoleto , runs from May 24 to June 9. But before that, the North Charleston Arts Fest (May 1-5) highlights dance, music, theater, visual arts, and literature. Named America’s favorite city (again) in the 2023 World’s Best Awards , Charleston ’s warm weather in the low 80s makes May a perfect time to explore all the city has to offer.
Where to Stay: T+L readers voted Wentworth Mansion — a boutique 19th-century home-turned-hotel with 21 guest rooms — the best hotel in Charleston in the 2023 World’s Best Awards.

Nicknamed “The Mountain State” and “Almost Heaven” (thanks to John Denver’s classic song), West Virginia is the home of America’s newest national park, New River Gorge National Park and Preserve . “Spring is truly one of the best seasons to visit the park,” Eve West, chief of interpretation and visitor services for the park, tells T+L. “In early spring before the trees leaf out, wildflowers of many colors and varieties literally carpet the forest floor. Later, the leaf canopy appears, and you can see shades of light and dark green as the leaves mature.” Hiking, river rafting, biking, and exploring by car are some ways to enjoy New River Gorge’s 70,000 acres of land and the New River — which, despite its name, is actually among the oldest rivers on Earth.
Where to Stay: There are eight campgrounds to choose from at the national park. ACE Adventure Resort also offers cabins, log homes, RV sites, and rustic campsites.

Georgia, called the birthplace of winemaking, is located on the border between Europe and Asia with the Caucasus Mountains to the north and the Black Sea to the west. “With fewer crowds, May is the perfect time for a Georgian getaway,” according to Levan Berulava, a Tbilisi tastemaker and general manager of Rooms Hotels. “Everything wakes up again in May — nature, trees, and Tbilisi itself all come alive with colors, mirroring the warmth and vibrant energy of its people.” Zero Compromise , a two-day wine festival dedicated to natural wine, will be held in May. Also in May, the New Wine Festival brings vintners from around the country to Tbilisi . “Long walks in a cobbled maze of balconied neighborhoods offer opportunities to stumble on art nouveau urban architecture and layers of complex history,” Berulava says of Tbilisi. “Indulge in Georgian cuisine, sit in outdoor cafes, slowly sipping wine.”
Where to Stay: Rooms Tbilisi is located in the Vera district, with 122 rooms and suites the hotel’s website calls “industrial chic.”

About 60 miles northwest of London, Oxford is home to the University of Oxford , the oldest university in the English-speaking world, dating back as early as 1096. “With its impressive historic buildings, ancient lanes, riverside walks, and timeless beauty, Oxford has been featured in many movies. Come in May, and you’ll also find cutting-edge culture, excellent and eclectic food, great shopping, and a host of springtime celebrations,” Lesley Wright of Experience Oxfordshire told T+L. We recommend adding the Museum of Oxford , Oxford Castle and Prison , and the many filming locations featured in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey to your itinerary.
Where to Stay: Set to open in April 2024 in the heart of Oxford, The Store is a boutique hotel located in a historic building that was once a family-owned department store.

The shoulder season month of May is a great time to visit St. Lucia thanks to dry weather with temperatures in the 80s. Visitors can try the island’s delicious cuisine, zipline across the forest canopy, swim in the hot springs, lounge on gorgeous palm-lined beaches, and hike along the Pitons, dramatic volcanic mountains that are recognized as a World Heritage Site. The St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival (April 30-May 12) presents international and local musicians representing a wide range of genres.
Where to Stay: St. Lucia’s best all-inclusive resorts make vacation planning easy. Wellness resort BodyHoliday offers a variety of spa treatments and wellness experiences, while Jade Mountain offers stunning views of the Pitons from private, in-room infinity pools.
Located on the Caribbean Sea, Belize is made up of 450 islands and a mainland area with rainforests and mountains. Snorkelers will enjoy a boat trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve to swim among tropical fish, sharks, rays, and sea turtles. From May 17-19, visitors can check out the annual Chocolate Festival in southern Belize.
Where to Stay: I stayed at Alaia Belize on Ambergris Caye and appreciated the great staff, tasty food, and convenient location steps from San Pedro. For something a little more secluded, Cayo Espanto is an all-inclusive private island resort with seven villas.

There’s still a chill in the air in Ireland, but May is one of Dublin’s driest months, so it’s a good time to pack a jacket and enjoy the city before summer crowds (and higher prices) arrive. Go for a stroll through expansive Phoenix Park or centrally located St. Stephen’s Green, visit Trinity College to see the famous Book of Kells, and learn about Irish history at the National Museum of Ireland and Kilmainham Gaol. Don’t miss the music, fun, and friendly atmosphere of Dublin’s pubs, and learn to pour a proper pint at the Guinness Storehouse before you enjoy 360-degree views of the city from the Gravity Bar.
Where to Stay: The Shelbourne , celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2024, was voted one of the top Dublin hotels in the 2023 World’s Best Awards. Throughout its storied past, the hotel has hosted iconic guests including John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and Grace Kelly. The Leinster is scheduled to open on Merrion Square this February with a Jean-Georges rooftop restaurant.

Located in southwestern Germany in the Black Forest, Baden-Baden is known for its world-famous spa culture and abundance of natural thermal springs. Caracalla Therme and Friedrichsbad Spa are among the best-known bathhouses, located at the site of original Roman baths dating back 2,000 years. In May, the Spring Meeting opens the horse racing season, welcoming thoroughbreds from around the world for three days of events. The opulent Baden-Baden Casino , Germany’s oldest casino, is also worth a stop.
Where to Stay: Roomers Baden-Baden , Autograph Collection features a rooftop terrace, outdoor pool, spa, and gym.
Lara D'agostino/Travel + Leisure
Located in the western Mediterranean Sea, the Balearic Islands offer a mild climate year-round, but May is the best time to enjoy warm weather with fewer visitors. Ibiza is lively in summer, but in May you can enjoy quieter visits to markets, beaches, and the hillside town of Dalt Vila. Menorca offers a more low-key atmosphere, Mallorca is the largest of the islands with lots to see and do, and Formentera, the smallest of the inhabited islands, treasures its natural beauty. Whether you’re after nightlife, water sports, quaint towns, or a tranquil escape, you can find your perfect spring vacation in the Balearic Islands.
Where to Stay: In Menorca, Villa Le Blanc offers beautiful Mediterranean views and a Thai-inspired spa. In Mallorca, the adults-only Hotel de Mar and Zafiro Palace Andratx are five-star options. In Ibiza, Ibiza Gran Hotel offers an array of wellness experiences and Michelin-starred La Gaia by Óscar Molina.

Where is hot in May? Our top 10 destinations for spring 2023
By Laura Chubb
May is here, the weather is hot (in some places) and it's finally time for swimsuit season! At long, long last, Europe is on its way to beach -day-ready. Shame you’re not the only one hankering after your spot in the sun. The good news: there are a number of delicious destinations just the right side of up-and-coming right now, from a secret Aegean beauty to “the new Croatia ”. Feeling more exotic? The temperature’s rising on Asia ’s best island, and in Brazil’s answer to St Tropez . Or, if you’re more about urban cool, it’s a temperate time to explore some of the world’s most vibrant street life, and an unlikely creative scene in New Mexico’s high desert.
Where in Europe is hot in May?
In May, much of Europe starts to warm up. You'll find temperatures happily above 20℃ in Greece , Spain , Italy and the South of France . Go further south, and you'll be treated to even hotter days – on Turkey 's Turquoise Coast, the average May temperature is 27℃.
Is Greece warm in May?
Greece is one of the most popular destinations to visit in summer – but if you want to squeeze in a visit before the peak season start, the days are long, sunny and warm in May, too. Below, we recommend the island of Antiparos (average temperature 20℃), but in Rhodes, you can expect highs of 23℃, Santorini has highs of 22℃ and Samos has highs of 25℃.
Inspired? Scroll through to discover where is hot in May, and find your 2023 dream getaway.
Antiparos, Greece
Average May temperature: 20℃
With every wannabe influencer and their mother draping themselves over Santorini and Mykonos this summer, it might be time to turn your attention to another Cyclades stunner. Antiparos’s quiet beauty has increasingly drawn seclusion-seeking celebs: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson bought a villa here 15 years ago, while Madonna, Bruce Springsteen and Matthew McConaughey have all been spotted enjoying an under-the-radar getaway (no, not with each other). The excellent selection of private villas with ridiculous Aegean views (Villa Melissa from White Key, Villa Emerald with Elite) probably helps. There’s also the many, many sandy beaches lapped by electric-blue shallows; the unpretentious fun of ’til-dawn cocktail bars (Boogaloo, Loco); and even a beach club/restaurant/boutique hotel, The Beach House, hidden in its own secret cove.
Where to stay : For whitewashed walls against bright blue skies and typical Cycladic architecture, Artemis hotel ticks the boxes. Or, for independent travellers, this Airbnb with its own large pool shouldn't be missed.
Average May temperature : 23℃
“At a time when Ibiza is in danger of becoming overrun with Hard Rock Cafés and Nikki Beaches,” we once wrote, “Formentera’s funky little groove couldn’t be more enticing.” It still holds true. A half-hour ferry ride from its big-sister Balearic, this 12-mile-long island has the whole barefoot-boho thing going for it – it’s where Dylan once lived in a lighthouse and Joni Mitchell wrote her Blue album – and there are fabulous beach clubs sans the bangin’ choons. See 10 Punto 7, with its white director’s chairs, bleached decking and sushi; or cushioned day beds and green tea-infused cocktails at ChezzGerdi. Etosoto, the work of two Parisian brothers, is a farmhouse-turned-ideas-lab (wellness weeks, music workshops, film-making retreats), offering nine delightful, whitewash-and-polished-cement rooms.
Where to stay: Can Tres is home to three hidden-away, architect-designed angular houses, Can Aire, Can Mar and Can Terra, each with a handful of rooms. They feel like small apartments in the smartest imagining, with shaded private terraces for hand-delivered breakfasts of freshly baked bread and sticky jams. Or go it alone in this traditional Airbnb near the coast.
Umbria, Italy
Umbria : all the Tuscan countryside’s rustic beauty, without all the tourists. Far less ‘discovered’ than the major Italian hotspots, scattered with gorgeous medieval hamlets and serving the most unbelievable slow food from its farms and forests (truffles, wild boar, sunchokes), this is Italy’s undisturbed, back-to-the-land paradise, found. Where country churches casually hang an original Beato Angelico and, in hill town Orvieto, the un-Instagrammed Duomo contains 500 years’ worth of sculptures and mosaics. Further along the River Tiber, hillside Todi is an excellent spot for Umbrian sangiovese, with antipasti so fresh and bright, you’ll understand why this was once hailed the most liveable town in the world.
Where to stay: We recommend gathering your friends and booking this wonderful home in the hills , where you can sip wine as the sun sets. Or, for a more intimate stay, this small home with its own pool and impeccable views is hard to beat.
Albanian Riviera
Average May temperature : 22℃
It’s the new Croatia , they say, though they probably just mean the common allure of the Adriatic’s astonishing, crystalline hue. What the Albanian Riviera really offers is a dreamy European beach holiday that’s well into sunbathing temperatures by May . Do it right and you can even recreate the ‘hidden gem’ feel that first brought boho backpackers to this sensational strip of coast. Head to Ksamil, just opposite Corfu, for a bright-white beach on a brochure-beautiful bay. (There’s a trio of small islands a quick swim away if you need more room.) Or Dhërmi, famed for the colour of its water, but with such a long sweep of sand, you can always find a spot to call your own.
Where to stay : Slightly away from the busy coastline (but still within reach on a short trip) is Mrizi i Zanave Agroturizëm , a boutique hotel with impeccable views surrounded by nature. Or Elite Bay Hotel Lalez Durres is a minimalists' dream, right on the beach.
Turquoise Coast, Turkey
Average May temperature : 27℃
Increasingly billed as ‘Turkey’s Hamptons’, this south-western stretch of coastline – where the Aegean meets the Med – has remained glamorous and dignified, despite the ever-swelling gaggle of tourists pouring in. Hell, Assouline has even released a photo book documenting its aspirational good looks, from Kaş’s ancient ruins to that flirty water, glittering like the beckoning temptress it is. Of course, Bodrum Town will be heaving, but there’s always Alacati (simple and unspoiled), Kabak (beach yoga, hiking) or Patara (low-rise, low-key). And if you prefer the Bodrum buzz, there are many excellent hotels (Ian Schrager’s Edition, the Mandarin Oriental) and exclusive beach clubs (such as Maçakizi, where Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell have been seen sunbathing) for doing the Bodrum thing.
Where to stay : Bodrum EDITION is home to soft sand on the beach, where children splash about on paddleboards, and Balearic house music – plus its bar, Discetto, has a giant pink disco ball. For pure indulgence, Six Senses Kaplankaya has five private beaches, plus an impeccable spa.
Tokyo, Japan
Average May temperature : 21℃
Every facet of Tokyo ’s intoxicating otherness is best felt on the street: among crowds, under the gleam of neon, within a yakitori-smoke fog. Agog at the architecture -as-art fashion-house flagships along leafy Omotesando, and the Gothic Lolitas of Harajuku next door. Disbelieving as Shibuya crossing bursts into intermittent chaos, and stymying a slight headache amidst Akihabara’s candy-coloured anime anarchy. But the weather this time of year is fab for more peaceful pursuits, too: strolling the Meiji Shrine forest, say, or pedalling a swan-shaped boat across Ueno Park pond. Find more calm at Aman’s first-ever urban resort, one of our favourite hotels in the world .
Where to stay: There's nowhere better to take in the views of the Tokyo skyline than from the timelessly chic Mandarin Oriental , or Edition Toranomon has some of the city's most impressive cocktails at the glittering Gold Bar.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Average May temperature: 22℃
Breaking Bad might have made an unlikely star of Albuquerque, but it’s New Mexico’s state capital, Santa Fe , that belongs on screen. Surrounded by those same starkly beautiful vistas, the city’s signature adobe Pueblo-style architecture gives it a dreamy, old-timey quality. But in among all that folk art and New Age-iness, there beats a surprisingly contemporary pulse. The fantastical House of Eternal Return, a two-storey, explorable art installation by local collective Meow Wolf, is now one of its biggest attractions (built in an old bowling alley with the financial support of George RR Martin and a $2.7 million budget). Check out all the Georgia O’Keeffe stuff (the museum; her home and studio at Ghost Ranch, an hour outside the city), then follow up with cocktails at Santa Fe Spirits’ distillery and head to Anasazi for dinner, where modern cooking meets fiery Southwestern tradition (applewood-smoked duck breast with serrano-plum sauce).
Where to stay: El Rey Court is a retooled Route 66 motel with a killer mezcal bar and pool . Or for prestige, the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi is an obvious choice: rooms feature beamed viga ceilings, kiva fireplaces, and antique Navajo rugs, and the location couldn't be more ideal.
Buzios, Brazil
Average May temperature : 26℃
When lured by the promise of Brazil’s ever-sexy beaches, it’s tempting to just stick to Rio . But that’d be a mistake – because, just three hours’ drive from ‘the marvellous city’, you’ll find the Brazilian answer to St Tropez . Thank Brigitte Bardot, who rocked up here with her Brazilian boyfriend in the 1960s, turning the heavenly Buzios peninsula into a sensation overnight. Today, it’s super-polished, more refined than its popular friend: clearer, cleaner water; sail-up restaurants; a plethora of posh boutique hotels. Locals don’t seem to mind the Bardot effect: there’s a sculpture of her on a gorgeous stretch of seafront, itself named ‘Orla Bardot’. Along with cobbled streets and caipirinhas, there are more than 20 beaches to choose between, ranging from jungle-clad stretches to lovely rock-hewn coves.
Where to stay: Insólito Boutique Hotel is found along the coast; if you can, stretch to the suite with its own deck and small pool, for incomparable views. Or bring friends and rent out this large and comfortable Airbnb with its own pool.

If you’re going to splash out on perfection, you might as well go at the perfect time. The Seychelles ’ underwater visibility hits its peak in May – up to 30 metres – and the temperature is a wonderful hot-but-not-too-hot.
Where to stay: Make it even more memorable and plump for a stay at Six Senses Zil Pasyon . Glass-fronted villas sit on Felicité, the archetypal castaway island with its dramatic granite boulders, jungly hills and white sand so soft it squeaks. The beach bar strings giant hammocks over the ocean; an outrageous spa is hidden between boulders directly on the seafront; and night-time brings fire-cooked lobsters and French champagne. Or, Four Seasons resort at Desroches Island is home to guest villas, quietly and immaculately done out and set in big, lawned gardens with private pools , from which secret walkways lead to wide beaches where turtles nest.
Boracay Island, Philippines
Average May temperature : 29℃
Boracay’s 2.5 mile-long, aptly named White Beach has been a victim of its own success: people went so crazy for this little piece of paradise over the past few years that in April 2018, the government abruptly shut the island down for ‘rehabilitation’. Six months later, Boracay reopened, with new rules. Limited flights and hotel rooms are being made available; smoking and booze are banned on White Beach; casinos and single-use plastics are out; and watersports are restricted to specific zones. That puts paid to Boracay’s standing as ‘the new Phuket ’ – and that can only be a good thing.
Where to stay: The Shangri-La in Boracay is set over 30 acres; the main building is an open pavilion with a pitched roof and an exterior of local coral stone, and rooms are spacious and luxurious. Or, Bolabog Beach is set on a quieter side of the coast. Here, you can watch hundreds of colourful kites light up the sky – all the better while sipping a Pineapple Mint shake at the Banana Bay , Bolabog’s best-kept boutique hotel .

7 Best Caribbean Islands To Visit In May (2024 Reviews)
Destinations By Month
Updated: December 15, 2023
December to mid-April is considered the peak season for a holiday in the Caribbean. May is ideal if you want to experience a mix of what the low and high season feels like. There won’t be crowds, but the streets will not be empty in the best Caribbean islands to visit in May.
When you book a Caribbean vacation in May, there’s also a good chance that you’ll be able to get good discounts.
The weather in the islands is pretty steady all year round, with an overall low risk of rain. The region experiences lows of mid-70 degrees Fahrenheit and highs in the mid-80s.
If you’re planning to travel in May, here are some of the best destinations in the Caribbean:
#1 Curaçao
Curaçao is one of the best off-peak destinations if you’re planning a spring or summer getaway. The former center of the slave trade in the region is now an independent state with a very diverse culture. Such influences show in the language, food, and music.
One of the best Caribbean islands to visit in May, Curaçao receives a minimal amount of rain during the period. With temperatures between 78°F (26°C) and 89°F (32°C), the island is a tropical paradise for anyone seeking to escape the tiring daily grind.
Must Do: Curaçao has so much to offer. From Christoffel Park for those who want to experience a slice of nature, immerse in local culture at downtown Willemstad, traverse the Queen Emma Bridge, to relaxing on one of the beautiful beaches, and enjoying the sunset while on a Caribbean boat tour. As the locals say, it’s always dushi or nice in Curaçao.
#2 St. Lucia
Save yourself from expensive room rates in this Caribbean paradise between December and April. If your schedule allows for some flexibility, May is perfect for enjoying the breathtaking beauty of St. Lucia.
Visiting St. Lucia in May gives you the full benefits of the shoulder season. There’s a good chance you can get better deals for your airfare and accommodations during this time. Plus, the weather is great in the mid-70s to 80s. The beaches are less crowded, too, so you can quietly appreciate the pristine and bountiful island on the edge of the Caribbean.
Must Do: When in St. Lucia, you cannot miss experiencing the majestic Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s also the Tet Paul Nature Trail, Sulphur Springs Park in Soufriere, Anse Chastanet, Marigot Bay, and a good dose of snorkeling, diving, and watersports.
This small island in the Caribbean is just 131 sq. mi. but has a rich history, lush landscape, and picture-perfect beaches to offer.
If you’re planning to book your Grenada vacation in May, you’ll love the tropical climate eased by the trade winds. During this period, rain showers are brief, and you’re holidays won’t be ruined by hurricanes that usually pass through between July and November.
This tourism mecca is popular for its beaches, carnivals, and spices.
Must Do: The Grande Anse tops the list of travelers who want to experience island life. Don’t miss the Grand Etang National Park, Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park, and the build-up for the Grenada Carnival that usually kicks off around April. There are also great deals offered by all-inclusive resorts such as the Sandals Grenada Resort & Spa Grenada .
#4 Anguilla
If you’re dreaming of soaking up the warmth of the tropical sun, walking on white sand beaches, and enjoying crystal clear waters, you can never go wrong with Anguilla as one of the best Caribbean islands to visit in May.
The climate in this corner of the Caribbean is temperate and humid all year round. The average temperature gives you comfortable weather at 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit in May. There’s a very small chance of rain and strong winds, guaranteeing you can make the most of your vacation.
For those closely watching their budget, the off-season rates of villas and hotels in Anguilla start in May. You can pretty much stretch your hard-earned cash to satisfy your wanderlust.
Must Do: The picturesque beaches of Meads, Shoal, and Rendezvous Bay should be on top of your list. You can also head to Scilly Cay and other off-island cays that offer different vibes. Of course, don’t forget to immerse yourself in the local food scene.
#5 Cayman Islands
When you visit the Cayman Islands in May, you can take advantage of the warm weather just before the rainy season kicks off in June. The typical day will give you 74 to 90°F weather with short bursts of rain on some days.
You can enjoy enviable hotel rates in this world-famous diving destination during the period. You can get up close with the thriving sea life if you’re an avid diver, sightsee on one of the islands, or just relax on one of its post-card-worthy beaches. Must Do: Lounge on the crescent-shaped Seven Mile beach, check out Stingray City in Grand Cayman, discover George Town, and kayak at night at the Bioluminescent Bay.
#6 Puerto Rico
This island nation is just a thousand miles off Florida and is hugged by the Atlantic and the Caribbean. May is one of the sweetest spots if you’re planning a holiday in this U.S. territory. Most days, the weather is pleasant, with temperatures playing in the mid-80s.
Aside from the tropical climate, Puerto Rico is a popular Caribbean destination because of its rich history, diverse landscapes, and colonial architecture.
Must Do: Check out the El Morro, Calle del Cristo, and other iconic sights at Old San Juan. Discover the natural wonders of Puerto Rico by joining a tour of the El Yunque Rainforest. For some fun in the sun, head to Flamenco Beach. Ah, don’t forget to try their rhum.
#7 Martinique
The weather in Martinique in May gives you an average temperature in the mid-70s and mid-80s and an average precipitation of 4.85 inches. This means you have the perfect weather to explore this beautiful island and dive into its culture just before storms hit the region starting in June.
What’s more, you get to discover Martinique sans the touristy peak-season crowd.
Martinique is a little slice of France with an overload of blue sky, greeneries, and white sand beaches.
Must Do: Whether traveling solo or on a family holiday, you can relax at the most beautiful beach in Martinique– the Grande Anse des Saline. You can also scale the heights of Mont Pelle, an active volcano. There’s also the Balata Gardens, Habitation Clement, Diamond Beach, and more.
The Caribbean has many gems to offer, and the best islands to visit in May mentioned above are just a small chunk of that list. With great weather, it will all boil down to what kind of vacation you want and what you want to try. Go ahead and book that plane ticket and accommodation today. Of course, there’s always a next time to try the other Caribbean destinations.

25 of the Best Places to Visit in May in the USA
04/03/2024 by Ashley Yap 2 Comments
If you’ve missed your chance to travel to one of our best places to visit in April in the USA , no worries! Maybe the April showers deterred you from traveling, but the promise of May flowers may be the inspiration you need. Like April, May is the shoulder season for many destinations that get a big rush of tourism in the summer months. That means you’ll be able to enjoy warmer temps and (hopefully) smaller crowds.
Here are my best picks for where to travel in the USA this May:
- Best City: New Orleans, Louisiana
- Best Beachy Road Trip: Key West, Florida
- Best Hikes: Kauai, Hawai’i
- Best Photography: White Sands National Park, New Mexico
- Best Flowers: Holland, Michigan
Table of Contents
1. Kauai, Hawai’i
As the Hawaiian Islands transition from spring to summer, temperatures increase on Kauai during the month of May but remain relatively mild. Picture opening the windows in your seaside bungalow to let the salty breeze in during the day, keeping a fan going to keep cool at night. Kauai sees less rain in May than March and April, making for sunny days perfect for hiking, sailing, hitting the beach, and all the other exciting outdoors activities on the island.
May is part of shoulder season on Kauai as well, so you’ll see fewer crowds and enjoy lower prices on accommodations. For more ideas on how to make the most of your trip to Kauai, check out this complete guide .
2. Alaskan Cruise
May marks the beginning of cruise season in Alaska. If you didn’t know that was a thing, neither did I! This is the time when the ice melts just enough for cruise ships to pass through their chosen routes, and if you want first dibs, book your Alaskan cruise in May.
Alaskan cruises are ideal for travelers who don’t necessarily identify as “cruise people,” as this is far from your typical experience. In Alaska, it’s less about hopping off the ship to explore a beach town, and more about taking things slow, catching glimpses of wildlife, and admiring the glacial landscapes you’ll find along the way. Curious to give it a try? Here’s my full rundown of everything you need to know about cruising through Alaska.
3. San Francisco, California
In May you can expect to experience some of San Francisco’s best weather of the year. Sunny days with temperatures around the mid-60s make it just the right time to explore this hip and colorful city. Bring some layers to cozy up during chilly nights, though.
You’ll see flowers in bloom throughout town, which will add a dash of whimsy to your trip. May is also an exciting month for festival lovers, as Carnaval in the Mission District falls on Memorial Day weekend, celebrating the city’s rich Latin American and Caribbean culture.
May is also the ideal time to head out on a boat cruise to see San Francisco from the water. Soaking up the sun and enjoying the scenic views of the bay is a must-do.
4. Big Sur, California
Visiting Big Sur in May means you’ll be catching some gorgeous weather, right before it gets super busy with summertime tourists. If you haven’t considered adding it to your California road-trip itinerary , this is your sign to do so.
The stretch of two-lane highway that winds along the rugged Cali coast between Carmel and San Simeon is what we know as the Big Sur area, and it offers some stunning views of the ocean, like the one at McWay Falls. Make sure to check out the hidden gem Pfeiffer Beach , where the sand looks purple and the sunsets will take your breath away.
May temperatures are mild here, with blankets of fog moving in during the evening until dawn. This might make some travelers cranky, but I think fog is kind of beautiful and sets the scene for a sweet late spring/early summer adventure.
5. Las Vegas, Nevada
Vegas, baby! This glittery city gets quite hot in the summertime, so it’s best to check it out in May, before the heat becomes unbearable. You get the best of both worlds here: a bustling city full of lights and entertainment, and natural areas with great expanses of desert as far as the eye can see. It can be your base for visiting Zion National Park , the Grand Canyon, or nearby Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area.
If you’re up for it this May, consider road-tripping from Las Vegas to Reno for an unforgettable adventure full of quirky stops.
6. Canyonlands National Park, Utah
It’s no secret that we think Utah is one of the most beautiful states in the US , so why not make it your chosen May destination?
Awe-inspiring landscapes make Canyonlands National Park one of the best places to bask in the state’s beauty. May is a popular time to visit, because of the relatively mild temperatures (around 80 degrees during the day) which shoot up in the summer months, making it less than ideal for hiking. This month, though, you’ll be able to enjoy warm and sunny days without being overwhelmed by the heat.
You can indeed hike or drive through Canyonlands National Park to see its vast natural beauty, but you can also fly over it and see the incredible rock formations from above. Add Canyonlands to your Utah national parks road trip itinerary this May — you won’t be disappointed!
7. Havasu Falls, Arizona
There’s no wonder why Havasu Falls is at the top of our list of the most beautiful waterfalls in Arizona . Hiking there on the Havasupai Reservation is ideal in May, because it is warm enough to swim in the pools, it hasn’t gotten totally buggy yet, and you’ll visit just before peak season (it’s interesting that monsoon season (late June-August) is the most popular for permits, because you would think that the high temperatures and even higher chance of rain should be deterrents).
You can find everything you need to know about hiking to Havasu Falls here , with details on permits, packing, and more.
8. White Sands National Park, New Mexico
Sure, White Sands National Park might be in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico. Don’t let that deter you from visiting, though! This is one of the most magical places you can find in the US, hands down. It’s usually very uncrowded.
Since it’s so far off the beaten path, make sure to bring plenty of food and water with you. The sun can be quite harsh, especially in May, so bring sunscreen and a hat too, to shield you from those glaring rays.
What makes this place extra special in May is the abundance of purple sand verbena blooms that you’ll find scattered through the soft white sand. These flowers smell a lot like gardenias and were used by native people as a mild sedative for years.
I know, I’m feeling like packing my bags and heading to the dunes myself, too. Find everything you need to know about visiting White Sands National Park here .
9. Black Canyon at Gunnison National Park, Colorado
Beginning in May, both parts (the north and south rims) of Black Canyon in Gunnison National Park are open to enjoy. Like many other places on this list, this part of Colorado has the perfect hiking weather this month: just warm enough to bask in the sun, but not nearly as hot as the summer months.
A huge plus for Black Canyon is that it never gets too crowded, like some other national parks. You might be surprised that all this natural beauty hasn’t been hyped as much, especially when you see the black cliffs from above at Chasm View! This national park is an awesome place to go rock climbing, kayaking, and rafting. You can also camp at one of two campgrounds in the park.
10. San Antonio, Texas
You’ve heard about the Texas heat, so I’ll spare you the details of my sticky summers spent there. Sure, May temperatures are high in San Antonio, but it’s much more breezy and less humid compared to the summer months, making it a great time to visit.
Stroll along the San Antonio Riverwalk, or tour the historic Spanish Missions UNESCO World Heritage site. Don’t skip out on the amazing Mexican food either, because San Antonio is known for having the best tacos in the country (don’t come at me, LA folks!).
11. New Orleans, Louisiana
There’s a reason why New Orleans makes our list of the best places to visit in spring in the USA . Especially in May, New Orleans is bursting with color from flowers in bloom throughout the city’s parks. Plus, May isn’t nearly as humid as June through August, and temps peak in the low 80s. It’s an ideal time for getting out on the town and exploring by foot or taking a carriage ride through the French Quarter.
New Orleans has a magical charm that makes so many travelers return again and again. This guide to New Orleans will help you to start planning your Southern adventure.
12. Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota
While some Southern states are in full summer mode, with warm temps and sunny days, Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota is just finishing its springtime thaw. As one of the lesser-known national parks, Voyageurs stays uncrowded even during peak season (May to August). That means you’ll be able to find plenty of nature-filled solitude here.
If you visit Voyageurs in May, make sure to bring layers, as temperatures peak around the mid 60s during the day and drop into the 40s at night. All of the newly melted ice means that the lakes and streams in the park are at their most impressive and ideal for canoeing .
13. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Sometimes I get the feeling that Milwaukee is living in Chicago’s shadow, because the cities are so close together, but then I remember that Milwaukee has a flair of its own. Though it’s small, there’s plenty to do. Check out this interactive walking tour that functions as an adventurous scavenger hunt!
May is a fantastic time to check out this Midwestern gem. Highs are around 70 degrees during the day, the warmest of the year so far. Winters are frigid in the Midwest, so Milwaukee residents get excited about sunny May days, as summer is just around the corner. Farmers markets around town, like the New Berlin Farmers Market, start to open in May, and it’s also a great time to rent a bike and explore on two wheels (make sure to ride along the lakeshore).
14. Holland, Michigan
Although Holland, Michigan, is thousands of miles away from its namesake, it captures the essence of Dutch culture in a beautiful way each May by celebrating its heritage at the Tulip Time Festival. Throughout town, there are literally millions of tulips in full bloom: in the parks, in home gardens, and along the streets. Holland completely changes color this time of year, and it’s truly magical for residents and visitors alike!
This charming Midwestern town receives the most visitors of the year during the month of May, so make sure to plan your trip well in advance, and don’t be surprised by the crowds!
15. Louisville, Kentucky
If you’ve read our Louisville guide , you know that this underrated city is truly a beauty. It’s also one of the cheapest places to visit on this list, so if you’re ballin’ on a budget but still want to travel this May, perhaps Louisville is your pick!
You can visit any month of the year and have a great time, but there’s no time like May, because of the Kentucky Derby . Even if you know nothing about horse racing, the derby is an iconic event at which you’ll be able to get a glimpse of Louisville’s unique culture and traditions. Make sure to book your flight and accommodations months in advance (if you can!), because this is the busiest time of year in Louisville.
16. Sevierville, Tennessee
If you like the mountains and fascinating museums and landmarks, put Sevierville on your list. The Dolly Parton statue is here, along with car and aviation museums. Between general stories and eateries, there’s also plenty of Southern hospitality. And, Sevierville is a great place to station yourself for exploring the Smokies! Must-do outdoor activities include the Forbidden Caverns, the swinging Bridge to Prosperity, and the mountain coasters!
If you can sneak a trip in May before the crowds start flowing in June, the weather will be in the low 70s, making it a great time to visit Tennessee . Hiking the mountains and visiting paved cities are also always a bit more pleasant when the temperature isn’t scorching hot. As with the rest of the country, flowers are in full bloom!
17. Key West, Florida
If you have been waiting for a glorious beach destination to travel to in May, this might be it! Key West gets its first taste of summer heat toward the end of the month, along with a higher chance of rain as May progresses. However, early May promises highs in the upper 70s and low humidity, making it perfect beach weather.
Idyllic and laid-back Key West is one of the best places in the US for a road trip, and this one-week itinerary is yours for the taking.
18. Everglades National Park, Florida
May marks the beginning of a long wet season in the Everglades, but don’t let that deter you from going. Since the wet season is just barely beginning in May, there’s still a chance that you’ll have sunny weather with less humidity than the summer months. Plus, rainstorms are typically very quick, so you’ll still be able to go looking for wildlife even if it rains.
Everglades National Park is home to some of the most biodiverse areas in the United States, so be prepared to see plenty of animals here, including the infamous Florida crocodiles. If you’re feeling especially brave, check out this kayak eco-tour through the mangrove tunnels .
19. Atlanta, Georgia
If you need a great budget trip, look no further than Atlanta, Georgia (we have a list of free things to do here ). You can float down the Chattahoochee River in an inner tube, check out art museums and displays, visit nature preserves, trails, and animal sanctuaries, and go on the Tiny Doors scavenger hunt.
May is a beautiful time to be occupied in Atlanta’s city streets because it’s still shoulder season here, but the temperatures rarely dip into the 60s or exceed the 90s. It’s normally pretty sunny with little rainfall, so you can spend a good bit of time outdoors.
20. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Myrtle Beach is one of the most quintessential East Coast beach towns in the US, and May is a wonderful time to visit. It’s warm enough to enjoy the beach, but the summer crowds haven’t begun yet. You’ll enjoy cheaper accommodation up until Memorial Day weekend, too.
Festivals are in full swing in May, including the World Famous Blue Crab Festival , which is one of the largest festivals in the Southeast. Get your beach hat and favorite swimsuit ready, because Myrtle Beach is calling you this May.
21. Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville has the perfect mix of outdoorsy grit and the charm of a small Southern city. As one of the best cities in the US for budget travelers , this one is great if you want to stretch your dollar. It’s an artsy place with a quirky atmosphere that makes it stand out from other cities in the South.
May is the ideal time to head to Asheville because it and surrounding mountains are in full bloom, and the mild warmth is just right for a hike on one of the many trails nearby. Another huge plus is that the farmers markets are open and offer local produce, which you’ll also enjoy at Asheville’s restaurants.
22. Virginia Beach, Virginia
Virginia Beach comes alive in May, as the seaside city kicks off its epic festival season with the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival and Neptune Spring Wine & Food Festival at the beginning of the month. You can also catch the Pungo Strawberry Festival at the end of the month. I mean, what more do you need?
May is the ideal time to visit Virginia Beach, because, like other beach destinations, summer isn’t quite in full swing yet and you’ll get a head-start on the season. It’s also a historical and cultural hub, with plenty of amazing restaurants and an epic boardwalk to explore. You can also learn about the city’s past on this haunted walking tour .
23. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
May is a great time to explore historic Philly, as it is just starting to warm up and it isn’t full-blown tourist season yet. You’ll be able to enjoy the city on foot, taking in the sights and smells of the quintessential Philly food trucks without having to fight the crowds.
Although May yields about 10 days of rain on average, you won’t have to worry about getting soaked, because there are so many things to do indoors, like checking out the incredible museums. If you do get lucky with sunny skies, don’t miss out on Philly’s art scene on this walking tour .
24. New York City, New York
Last but certainly not least on this list is larger-than-life NYC, which is absolutely stunning in the late spring and early summer. That’s why May is the best time to visit. Now that the trees are green again, you’ll love strolling through Central Park, seeing all the people hanging out and having picnics. You’ll also see tulips and other flowers in full bloom at parks throughout town.
There’s always something happening in New York at any given time of the year, including plenty of free things to do . I also recommend hitting up the colorful and flavorful Bronx Night Market , which starts its summer season before the beginning of May.
There’s enough variety in this list to give anyone decision anxiety, but I can’t think of a better problem to have than to be able to choose from among these destinations for a trip in May.
Are you hitting the road soon? Let us know which of these places you’re most excited to visit!

I like the variety of places you suggested here! And we are going to Myrtle Beach in May! Our first trip in a couple years. Your recommendation was perfect as we chose May due to the milder temperatures (and comfortable water, it can actually get too warm in a way in late summer), less crowds (after the golf crowd, before school goes out for the year if you go in early May), and good deals. You did your research regarding the weather! Great job as always!

Also discover:
Where’s hot in may in europe.
May might not be the height of summer just yet. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get your tan on in Europe. In fact, there are plenty of places where you can bask in the heat, and start working on that golden glow before the crowds arrive.
If you’re looking for some seriously hot weather, then you might want to consider heading south. Spain, Portugal, and Italy are all great options, with temperatures averaging around 25-30°C (77-86°F). That means you can spend your days lounging on the beach and sipping sangria.
Or, if you just want a bit of warmth without feeling like you’re going to melt, the Greek islands, Croatia, and the south of France all offer pleasantly warm temperatures in May, with highs of around 20-25°C (68-77°F).
Is May the best time to visit Europe?
So, is May the best time to visit Europe? Well, in my opinion, yes it is! Or one of the best times at least.
Admittedly, the weather can be a mixed bag. While some destinations may be warm and sunny, others can still be a bit chilly and rainy, particularly in the north of the continent. But, generally, the weather in May is pleasantly mild. If you’re after the heat of the sun, head south. Whereas, in the north, you may even encounter some snow still!
The crowds are thinner than in the peak summer months, and there are plenty of events and festivals to keep you entertained. May is technically shoulder season. This means that prices for flights and accommodation may be slightly cheaper than in the peak of summer.
All in all, if you’re looking for a balance between good weather, smaller crowds, and plenty of things to see and do, May is an excellent time to visit Europe. Just be sure to do your research and pack for (potentially) variable weather!

20 Awesome Places to Visit in May in the USA
With winter entirely over, longer days, and summer just around the corner, I think spring is one of the best times to explore the diverse landscapes – with warm weather but before the worst of the crowds arrive.
From my time spent traveling around, here are my favorite spots to discover during this month…
1. Texas Hill Country
This region is a beautiful mix of natural landmarks, picturesque small towns, and historical attractions, and I’m a huge fan!
Texas Hill Country is packed with rich history and culture and filled with scenic rivers, lovely lakes, rugged terrain, and beautiful flora. There are plenty of outdoor adventures here, from hiking to wildlife spotting.
Temperatures warm the state in the shoulder season from late March to this month, with warm sunshine and an average of 30 degrees during spring.
I highly recommend not missing the Kerrville Folk Festival or, if you arrive early enough, the Strawberry Festival, hiking, biking, floating, or soaking in the warm Texas sunshine before the searing summers start!
- Visitor’s Centre Address: 160 Ingram Hills Rd, Ingram, TX 78025, Phone: +1 830-367-2151
- Average temperature – 30 degrees
- Location Map and Directions
My favorite highlights…
- Visiting the magical enchanted rock formed from pink granite (one of the largest in the country).
- Discovering what is in the Cave Without a Name – a unique spot 80 feet below the ground.
- Stopping at the many quirky roadside attractions!
2. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
Renowned for its natural beauty and Civil War history, Shenandoah National Park offers a unique backcountry experience with an accessible location.
Whether you want to chill or indulge in outdoor activities, I love that this park has everything! Wildlife to spot here includes beautiful black bears, coyotes, white-tailed deer, big brown bats, bobcats, and spotted skunks, but I suggest being a bit careful when trying to spot them!
Surprisingly, the park is sleepy during spring, with wildflowers popping and blooming azaleas and cool temperatures away from the crowds. April and this month are the best times for hiking, bird watching, and star-gazing.
The snow is almost melting, temperatures are relatively warm, campgrounds are open, and you can explore the park in early spring without waiting in traffic lines.
- Visitor’s Centre Address: 17065 Skyline Drive, Front Royal, VA 22630
- Average temperature – 18 degrees
- Exploring the 105-mile Skyline Drive filled with scenic overlooks and Insta-worthy viewpoints.
- Hiking to the tallest waterfall in the park via Dark Hallow Falls trail (one of the most popular routes to take).
- Renting an E-bike and stopping off at a wine-tasting tour.
3. Annapolis, Maryland
The capital city of Annapolis is a historical treasure combining a rich history and maritime charm. I honestly think the best time to explore the city is in the spring, when it is full of blossoms, the weather is mild, and the sailing season starts with colorful boats filling the waters!
While spring highs might rise between the mid-60s and 70s, I personally think the temperatures are just right.
Spring fills the city with vibrant hues and outdoor festivals, and I highly recommend getting involved in as many as you can!
Witness the May Day celebrations, visit the historic state capitol, or explore downtown; the lively city always greets me with open arms.

In my opinion, the best time to explore Monterey is between April and this month when temperatures average around 19 degrees, and there are far fewer crowds to contend with!
With warmer temperatures, blossoming flowers, and moderate weather (with occasional rain), spring here has fewer crowds and eclectic food festivals.

Austin experiences a high season twice a year, mainly during spring and fall when the temperatures are perfect (around 30 degrees). Though you’ll encounter some of the biggest crowds, Austin is affordable even during the busiest seasons.
While the weather is pleasantly mild with some moisture, gorgeous blooms can be seen throughout the region. Known for its sunny days and outdoor activities, I personally think this month is an ideal time to visit before the soaring Texan summer becomes barely tolerable!
I highly recommend exploring downtown Austin, taking a trip to Zilker Park, and swimming in the refreshing waters of Barton Springs!

A beautiful place to explore year-round, Block Island offers gorgeous beaches, spectacular bluffs, and even a beautiful lighthouse, which I absolutely love (and so did my Instagram followers)!
While the crowds drastically decrease in winter, the “shoulder season”, especially late May or early September, is the best time to plan a trip when the waters are warmer. The rates and restaurant wait times are also reasonable.
I recommend relaxing on Crescent Beach or exploring the Mohegan Bluffs; I promise you’ll be in a completely different state of mind and atmosphere.
Temperatures average around 16 degrees this month, so I suggest packing some warm clothes!
- Visitor’s Center Address: 4 Center Rd, New Shoreham, RI 02807

- Discovering an array of awesome shops in the town, including art galleries, clothes stores, and jewelry boutiques.
- Hiring a bike to explore the island and seeing the famous lighthouses, the Great Salt Pond, and nature trails.
8. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
I personally think you can’t go wrong with visiting this cosmopolitan capital at any point in the year. Although I think this month is a great time to visit, it is lovely and not too hot yet, with reasonable hotel rates.
As the weather warms and the ground thaws, Phillies throng into the streets to welcome spring. With Spruce Street Harbor Park and beer gardens opening up, the city has a real buzz about the place in spring, as if it’s awakening from a slumber!
It’s prime time to see the city’s cherry blossom trees in Fairmont Park, and there are plenty of food fetes, blooming tulips, sporting events, and even park parties!
I would also highly recommend sightseeing all the incredible historic landmarks like Franklin Square, Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall and heading to hip neighborhoods like lively Fishtown or Rittenhouse Square for eclectic shopping, cool bars, and fabulous eats.

Often referred to as the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’, Las Vegas is the ultimate playground of adventures, cuisines, and nightlife scenes, and when you visit, you’ll see why!
While the Sin City sees an influx of visitors during winters and scorching summers, I honestly think the best time to visit the city is from March to this month and from September to November .
It’s still one of the warmest states to visit this month, but temperatures are much more manageable and hover around 32 degrees during the day.
You’ll find various events, hot (but not unbearable) daily temperatures, and fewer crowds. Nearby the city is the Grand Canyon, and I highly suggest a visit here—it’s a one-in-a-lifetime experience!
Spring and fall make for an ideal trip to the canyon for hiking, skywalking, and discovering the wildflower blooms, but I would also highly recommend just enjoying the scenic vistas.

The town is nestled on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee and is surrounded by unspoiled forests and mountains. Plenty of shopping, dining, entertainment, and other activities and attractions await.

Although it has plenty of fun events around the year, I personally think Ocean City is best from late May to early September, as the average highs range in the mid-80s.

I love this city! It’s buzzing with a vibrant public art scene, historic sites, museums, and farm-to-table restaurants.

Love this number 5 and number 7 are my two favorite places I think, but they all look great!
Amazing tourist destinations! It’s so cool. I should be making plans now. Thanks for showing us these beautiful spots!
What a great list of places to visit in the USA in the Spring. Arches National Park is one of my favorites. In addition to Arches, the nearby city of Moab is a fun place to add to your trip. We actually plan to visit both Arches and Moab this May as a family.
Napa Valley and Yosemite have always been a charm for me. I will visit these two places definitely after covid as it is my dream to go there and stay inside the national park. Thanks for the wonderful information.

10 of the best beach towns in Europe, with places to stay
From the Turkish Riviera to the Île de Ré, we select quiet and unspoilt places to stay for sun, sand, snorkelling – or just snoozing
Assos , Cephalonia, Greece
There’s something quite particular about small but perfectly formed Assos – butterscotch and rose-pink houses line a horseshoe bay, with Venetian ruins scattered between the narrow alleys. There are two small beaches, but the real joy is to rent a motor boat and discover the small bays and coves that fringe this part of the Cephalonian coast. Walkers can follow the path out on to the headland to the ruins of Assos’s 16th-century castle; there’s not a huge amount to see, but the views make the walk worth it. Roi Suites is a bougainvillaea-clad cluster of well-equipped studio flats in a waterfront neoclassical building, with gorgeous sea views from the pool terrace. Doubles from £117 (minimum seven nights), roisuites.com
Akyaka , Turkey
One of Turkey’s “ cittaslows” – slow towns, with an emphasis on nature and sustainability – Akyaka sits at the mouth of the Azmak River on the shimmering Bay of Gökova. Behind the beach, a lattice of bougainvillaea-clad streets is home to traditional lokantas (simple bistros) and cafes; at night the seafront restaurants set tables on the sand. Boats potter up the Azmak from the small harbour, where fish restaurants line the leafy riverbank and a shady walking trail leads into the countryside. Akyaka is also Turkey’s kite-surfing hub, with several surfing schools on the long stretch of beach just out of town. The Iskelem , set in a tranquil bay over the headland, is a gloriously peaceful retreat with simple rooms and an excellent restaurant. Doubles from £ 83 B&B, iskelemotel.com.tr
Göltürkbükü, Turkey
If Turkey has a Saint-Tropez, this glitzy coming-together of two villages, Gölköy and Türkbükü, is it, with a newly created public beach and decked beach clubs that ooze a chilled, Côte d’Azur vibe. There’s plenty going on but it’s still far quieter than nearby Bodrum, and has a particularly strong restaurant scene – book a table at Arnavutköy for a sumptuous, fish-themed splurge. Behind the beach, souvenir shops stand cheek-by-jowl with designer boutiques, small pensions beside five-star hotels, and the regular dolmu ş (public bus) offers the chance to explore other villages on the peninsula, including unspoilt Gümüşlük, with ramshackle fish restaurants along the beach. The Matiz is a friendly B&B with five simple rooms, a tranquil leafy garden and roof terrace. Doubles from £86 B&B, matizturkbuku.com
Šibenik, Croatia
To say Šibenik is a mini-Dubrovnik may be slightly overstating the case, but it has the same elegant Venetian architecture and terracotta-roofed houses – and considerably less in the way of crowds. This is a town built for wandering: from the Riva, the seaside promenade, up to the elegant cathedral and through the tangle of passageways and alleys that lead up to the 11th-century St Michael’s Fortress. Blue-flagged Banj beach is a 200-metre walk from the centre, and has a restaurant and play area, while boat trips run out into the unspoilt waters of the Kornati archipelago. Hotel Life Palace is a lovingly renovated 15th-century mansion, with 17 rooms that channel the historic feel, with frescoes, exposed brickwork and Renaissance-inspired furniture. Doubles from £ 118 B&B, hotel-lifepalace.hr
Cavtat, Croatia
One of Dalmatia’s most charming small seaside towns, Cavtat has terracotta-roofed houses that ripple out around a small horseshoe bay, with two wooded peninsulas stretching out towards Dubrovnik, 13 miles away across the water. Low-key cafes and restaurants – several run by the same families for decades – run parallel to the waterfront promenade, with swimming platforms and small pebble coves giving way to crystal-clear water. Boat taxis run regularly to Dubrovnik and nearby Elaphiti islands, and there’s a lovely circular walking route through the woods, with a couple of simple beach bars that are perfect sundowner spots. Villa Pattiera , once the home of opera singer Tino Pattiera, stands at the top of the promenade, with lovely views from its 12 apricot-hued bedrooms. Doubles from £156 B&B, villa-pattiera.hr
Santa Maria di Castellabate , Campania, Italy
A world away from the hustle of the nearby Amalfi coast, the Cilento coast is studded with small seaside towns where faded palazzos and fishers’ houses overlook unspoilt beaches. Santa Maria is just such a place: fishing boats return early in the morning to supply the town’s restaurants, with fishers mending their nets on the blue flag beaches. Days can be spent lazing on the sands or following hiking trails into the Cilento national park, with the nearby archaeological sites of Paestum and Velia a big draw for history buffs. Stay at the Hotel Garden Riviera , on a hillside 500 metres from the centre, with gorgeous sea views and a shuttle to the beach. Doubles from £ 72 B&B, hotelgardenriviera.it

La Flotte en Ré, Île de Ré, France
Once an important sea-fishing port, La Flotte is one of the Île de Ré’s most beautiful villages, with a tangle of lanes and alleyways running between classic Breton-style houses, a waterfront lined with restaurants and a sizable marina. Nearby Arnérault beach is the best choice for a lazy afternoon; the trees behind the beach offer shady spots for a snooze, with changing and toilet facilities – although it is very tidal, so check times before setting off. There are bikes to hire for the ride to atmospheric Abbaye des Châteliers, and a daily morning market for picnic goodies – excellent cheeses, breads and cured meats. The H ôtel Hippocampe is in the old village, with chic, airy rooms. Doubles from £ 74 room-only, hotel-hippocampe.com
Concarneau , Brittany, France
Steeped in history, with a belter of a beach and a working fishing fleet that fills the town’s restaurants with the freshest seafood, Concarneau is Brittany at its breezy, beautiful best. A town of two parts, it has 14th-century ramparts around the old town, set on a small island, and cobbled streets that wind between the houses to the bustling fishing port. Plage des Sables Blancs – a long stretch of unspoilt sand – is a short stroll from the centre of town, with good facilities including lifeguards. The Fishing Museum and the Marinarium – the oldest marine station in the world – are good wet-weather options for families. The Hotel Ker Mor is a quirky 19th-century hotel by the water’s edge. Doubles from £ 117 B&B, hotel- logishotels.com
Fornells, Menorca, Spain
Not to be confused with Playa de Fornells – a newer development a few miles away – Fornells is one of Menorca’s most charming fishing villages, with a low-key waterfront dotted with palm trees that has become a fish restaurant hub (the dish to order is caldereta de llagosta – lobster stew). In recent years it has also become known for watersports, with reliable winds making ideal conditions for windsurfing and wing-foiling; there are paddleboards for calmer days. The town beach is small, but Cala Tirant, on the other side of the headland, offers clear waters and a wide stretch of sand. Can Digus has light, airy apartments in the heart of town. Doubles from £ 57 room-only (two nights minimum), candigus.com
Llafranc , Girona, Spain
The jumble of whitewashed houses, blue doors and small fishing boats bobbing in the water give Llafranc a pleasingly old-school feel. Once the Costa Brava’s most glamorous spot – attracting everyone from Ernest Hemingway and Salvador Dalí to Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren – it has mellowed into a quiet, family-friendly resort that only really gets busy in July and August. The sheltered harbour is ideal for watersports, including kayaking, sailing, scuba-diving and paddleboarding, and there are good walks – particularly the mile-long stroll around the pine-clad headland to Calella de Palafrugell – and enough bars to create a bit of night-time buzz. Hostal Sa Teula sits 100 metres from the sea, with 18 unfussy bedrooms and a restaurant serving locally caught fish and classic Catalan dishes. Doubles from £ 109 B&B, hostalsateula.com
