Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver – Safari Zone Strategy Guide

In the original Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal , when your Trainer traveled to Kanto you found that the Safari Zone had moved out of Fuchsia City. This meant no Safari Zone Pokemon for your character. In Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver , the Safari Zone is back… just in a brand new location. It’s the biggest and most complex Safari Zone to date, so let’s take a look at what all you’ll have to go through to catch ’em all.

First of all, the basic premise has stayed the same – you are given thirty Safari Balls and you have a limited number of steps to catch Pokemon with. Your play ends when you run out of either steps or Safari Balls. This new Safari Zone is a lot more Trainer friendly however. Remember in the old games where you’d have to waste half your steps just to get to an area where you could hopefully find a Chansey? Well, now the Safari Zone is customizable. By using your DS stylus and the touch pad, you can move around the order of the six Safari Zones. This means if all you need to complete the Pokedex is say, a Smeargle, you can set it up so that the Field area of the Safari Zone is right at the entrance, giving you a better chance of catching it. Each of the six zones features distinctly different Pokemon, so you’ll have to visit them all eventually.

The Safari Zone Warden will also have tasks he will assign to you. The first is to get him a Geodude. In return, he’ll activate the customization ability mentioned in the previous paragraph. After that, he will ask you for a Sandshrew. Once you bring him one he’ll activate a new level of customization. This will involve special items that can attract Pokemon that would otherwise not appear in the Safari Zone. Each of these special Pokemon will require a set number of items to be laid down in the Safari Zone in the area they would show up in. Now you can only have 30 items out at a time, and some Pokemon like, say, Carnivine require 25 Grassland item to be laid out in the Desert area. That leaves you only five items to place elsewhere in the zone. The good thing is that the longer you leave these items out, the more experience those items will get, and they will level up like a Pokemon. These items will eventually be worth up to seven times their original value (based on how long you leave them out for), so things will get easier to catch all the Pokemon possible in the Safari Zone. Some rarely occurring Pokemon will not only requires items to be set out, but will also require those items to sit in the area for a length of time before they appear. Remember Carnivine in our item example? Well you’ll also have to leave those items in the Desert for ten straight days before he’ll begin to appear. Because of this, you might want to consider looking for Carnivine in the Marshlands where he requires only 18 points of items, but he will then take 20 days to appear. It’s up to you.

i was thinking…you know that u have 2 wait a certain amout of days for sum pokemon 2 appear…can u jus like change the date on your DS so that it makes the game think that say 20days have gone past??? any one know?

@brendan, no i don’t think it will work like that, if you change the date on your ds it takes at least 24 hours in order for anything time related to happen, as far as changing it 20 days and than waiting 24 hours i’m not sure but personally i wouldn’t waste my time trying

@Brendan, might work, changing the time from 1pm to 1am makes it night so I don’t see why not. Worth a try, it takes 2 mins to do. it’s a stupid thing to put in a game anyway, the majority of people beat the elite 4 in less than 2 weeks, then they’re done with the game, not going to sit around for 110 days for some shit pokemon to appear.

no you cant change the date but if you forward your clock to 23.29 and wait a minute then save then repete for an extra day each time thats how i got riolu

There is no ninth gym. There are two sets of eight.

@Shaymin: Are you just BSing? I’ve tried the same approach for bagon and then shelgon and both times was unable to catch one.

I should add that the time to set the clock to (and the time that I used) is 23:59

the date changes work for me in the safari zone as do they for the bug catching contest(tho i dont recomend jumping ahead because it records the days you do the contest i would only do that for days you missed)

on another note the the best way to get any pokemon is to have the other versions. thats how i did it i legitimantly have seen caught and curently own every pokemon in all ther evolved forms thats the best thing i can recomind because yes the waiting is bs when i can just do in 5 min on another vesion and trade over what its making me do in like 100+ days

Now if it says have 18 rocky items, do you have to have exactly 18 items or can you just wait till it counts as 18 rocky items?

@Luke, not everyone has 2 DS’s to trade the stuff over. I have 100% pokedex in diamond, but there’s not much I can do about it with one ds.

Return to New Bark

Congratulations, you are now the Indigo League Champion! That marks you as the strongest Trainer in all of Johto .

After the credits roll, you wind up back home in New Bark . Elm calls shortly after, asking you to visit the lab. Swing by to get the S.S. Ticket , a pass to board the S.S. Aqua in Olivine City . Head to the harbor to set sail for Vermilion City !

Olivine City

Enter the Olivine Port building to meet with Professor Oak , who upgrades your Pokédex to the National mode . This makes it possible to challenge the Gym Leaders to a rematch, participate in the Battle Frontier , and encounter wild Pokémon from far-off regions in places such as National Park . In addition, Professor Oak's Pokémon Talk now details information regarding Pokémon swarms . Present your S.S. Ticket to the Sailor to gain access to the harbor.

National Park (optional)

Once your Pokédex has been upgraded to National Mode, you will encounter foreign Bug Pokémon during National Park 's bug-catching contest on Thursdays and Saturdays, while the ones native to Johto and Kanto (excluding Scyther and Pinsir ) are now limited to the Tuesday contests. Be warned as the Pokémon found during these contests are at much higher levels than the ones found before acquiring the National Pokédex. In addition the prize for first place will be one of ten Evolution stones , chosen at random.

Pokéathlon Dome (optional)

You can meet Magnus , an old man with a Poliwrath in the gate southwest of National Park. He is the founder of the new Pokéathlon Dome , a sports venue where Trainers can participate in the Pokéathlon , an Olympic -style competition where their three-Pokémon team competes against others. Each of the five courses—Speed, Power, Skill, Stamina, and Jump—test a Pokémon's stats with games like Hurdle Dash , Ring Drop , and Snow Throw . There are ten games in all, and any Pokémon is allowed to enter, though Pokémon with different formes will have different stat values. When you try to register for the first time, Whitney appears and gives you a jersey to wear for the competition.

Aprijuice Stand

The Aprijuice Stand is located to the west of the building. This shop sells a variety of pre-made Aprijuice, a performance -enhancing drink made from Apricorns , that change on a daily basis. Each of the three vending machines dispense five different drinks, each reflecting one performance stat. Noticing your Apricorn Box , the woman gives you an Apriblender . This allows you to mix your own drinks, by blending up to five Apricorns at a time. The drink is ready after walking 100 steps, and has three servings per drink.

Athlete Shop

The Athlete Shop , located at the building's far-right counter, allows competitors to exchange points for a variety of items. The available items change daily, and each item may only be purchased once per day, and many are available only if you have the National Pokédex.

Frontier Access (optional)

The Frontier Access is a small town on Route 40 that serves as a staging area for those seeking to challenge the Battle Frontier . Once you have defeated the Champion, the man inside the gate will allow you to enter the area. The single home belongs to a Move Tutor , who offers to teach any of 51 different moves for the right number of Battle Points . These points are earned by winning at the various facilities in the Battle Frontier.

Battle Frontier

The Battle Frontier is home to five different facilities. Each of these is led by a Frontier Brain , a position similar to that of a Gym Leader. These people may be challenged after experiencing a winning streak of a certain length. Defeating these Frontier Brains will earn challengers commemorative prints . Upon first entering the Frontier, the women at the entrance will update your Vs. Recorder with a Frontier Record , which documents of the amount of Battle Points and any prints earned.

Safari Zone (optional)

As you leave the Olivine Port, Baoba calls to inform you of the Safari Zone 's new Object Arrangement feature. The Safari Zone is located at the Safari Zone Gate , a bazaar that sprung up due to the Safari Zone's popularity.

For $ 500, the player will receive 30 Safari Balls . Akin to previous Safari Zones, there is a large area to cover, but the six areas of the Zone can uniquely be rearranged to suit the player. Also, there is no time or step limit to how long the player can try to catch Pokémon. The only ways to leave are to retire, to walk back through the entrance or to run out of Safari Balls.

When a wild Pokémon appears, no Pokémon may be sent out to battle it; catching Pokémon here, as in most Safari Zones, requires sheer luck. There are four options in the battle screen: throw a Safari Ball, throw Bait, run away, and throw Mud. Throwing Bait makes a Pokémon less likely to run, but makes it harder to catch, while throwing Mud does the reverse, making it easier to catch but more likely to run.

First Challenge

When the player first visits the Safari Zone, its owner, Baoba , will give the player their first challenge of finding and catching a Geodude inside of the Safari Zone. No matter which of the 10 possible default Safari Zone area set-ups is in use, the Peak Area where Geodude can be found is always the first area that the player enters.

Second Challenge

Three game-play hours after completion of the first challenge, Baoba will call the player and give them their second challenge. The point of this challenge is to get the player to use the Area Customizer, a machine that allows the player to move around and order the different areas of the Safari Zone. Using the Area Customizer to add the Desert Area, the player must catch a Sandshrew .

After the player has both received the National Pokédex from Professor Oak , and 3 hours of gameplay have passed after completion of Baoba 's second challenge, Baoba will call the player to tell them that he has come up with a new idea for the Safari Zone. After receiving this call, the player will be able to place blocks in each active area of the Safari Zone. Each active area can contain up to 30 blocks at one time. Initially, the player will have access to only 6 block items. After another 3 hours of gameplay, Baoba will call the player again and add 6 new blocks. This cycle will repeat 2 more times until the player has been granted access to all 24 different block items.

Area upgrades

Each active area of the Safari Zone keeps a hidden counter of how many days it has been active. After being active for ten days, a certain block type will be upgraded for each active area. Baoba will call to notify the player when this occurs. Once an area has been upgraded, the upgrade will not disappear if the player moves the area to be inactive or removes any blocks currently in the area. Each upgrade acts a multiplier for certain block types within the area. For example, a Plains block in an area with no upgrades counts as a single Plains block point. A Plains block in an area with one Plains upgrade counts as two Plains block points.

The day counter for each active area of the Safari Zone is not related to the DS's clock. In order to achieve area upgrades, the player must actually play the game on different days to increment the counters.

Fast Ship S.S. Aqua

Upon boarding the ship, a frantic old man runs into you. His granddaughter is missing, and he asks for your help before running off. Luckily, there are only so many places where she could be on the ship. Before starting the search, check your cabin at the east end of the hallway; it has a PC and a cozy bed to rest in, which is important to have with so many Trainers on board.

The first cabin to the right contains a sleeping Sailor. Your cabin is located next door, and Firebreather Lyle occupies the cabin across the hall. The fourth cabin on the right side is empty.

The first cabin to the left is occupied by Hiker Noland. The cabin to the left is empty. The cabin across the hall belongs to the worried grandfather, and the fourth cabin on the left side contains Pokéfan Colin and his daughters, Twins Meg & Peg.

The crew's rest area is located to the left of the stairs, while the dining area is located to the right. Beyond that is the engine room. The Sailor on guard duty asks you to find his replacement for the next shift. Head back to the entrance to find Stanly, the snoozing Sailor in the cabin next to yours. He springs awake when you confront him, and challenges you to a battle. Put him in his place, and he runs off. Go back downstairs and you are free to progress past him. Climb the ladder up to the captain's cabin.

Captain's cabin

The little girl is with the Captain, safe but bored, and keeps trying to get him to play. When you talk to her, she insists on playing a game of hide-and-seek. You'll find her on the lower deck, in a dark corner past the crew's rest area. Take her back to her grandfather's cabin, and he rewards you with a Metal Coat , a power-up for Steel-type attacks and an essential part of certain trade evolutions. Just then, the captain announces that the ship has docked in Vermilion Harbor, and passengers may now disembark.

Vermilion City

Vermilion City has not changed much over the past three years . A sleeping Snorlax blocks the path to the east, and the old man is still clearing the ground for construction with his Machop . Landmarks include the Pokémon Fan Club and Vermilion Gym .

A Legendary Sighting

As you proceed along the pathway from the harbor, you find Suicune standing on the water to the east — assuming you've seen it in Cianwood City and Route 42 first. It runs off as soon as you spot it, and Eusine appears again. He talks about noticing a pattern before he leaves as well.

Pokémon Fan Club

Listen to the Chairman's long story about his prized Rapidash , and he gives you a Rare Candy for sticking around through the whole thing. Take note of the guy with the Clefairy ; it is actually a Poké Doll that will need to be returned to its owner later.

Vermilion Gym

Vermilion City Pokémon Gym Leader: Lt. Surge The Lightning American

The Vermilion Gym specializes in Electric-type Pokémon, so avoid using Water or Flying Pokémon. Conversely, Ground Pokémon are not only immune to electrical attacks, but their Ground-type attacks inflict serious damage on Electric Pokémon. Lt. Surge has installed two switches, each hidden in a different trash can. When you find the first, the second is always in an adjacent trash can. If you flip the first but not the second, the trap resets. When both switches are flipped, the electrical barrier that separates you from the Gym Leader is disabled.

Lt. Surge's Raichu tends to use Double Team , which can quickly make it difficult to hit. Raichu and one of his Electrode can paralyze their target with Thunder Wave , so bring along a few Parlyz Heals . Take care when facing his Magneton ; its Mirror Shot attack, a Steel-type move, will deal serious damage to Rock Pokémon like Graveler . Most of his Pokémon have the Static Ability, so use non-contact moves like Earthquake .

Defeated, Lt. Surge awards you the Thunder Badge , and hands out TM34 ( Shock Wave ) as a prize.

• The first seven Gym Leaders in Kanto can be fought in absolutely any order, which means that some Pokemon's performance may vary greatly, depending on which Gym Leaders are fought first or last.
• Due to high level differences in some of the fights (particularly Blue and Red), it is almost impossible to complete the entire game efficiently in the traditional sense of the word.
• Almost all Pokemon that become available after completing Johto would rank very low due to coming very late and/or being underleveled.
• Most Pokemon that are obtained in the Safari Zone will be severely penalized in this ranking. This is because, upon the player's first visit to the Safari Zone, the player receives one out of ten default layouts at random and cannot change the areas within it until they complete Baoba's first test and wait three in-game hours to pass. This means that obtaining Safari Zone Pokemon is not only inconsistent, but also highly inefficient if the player does not get a default layout with the needed area.
• Typing: A Pokemon's typing can be of great importance for an efficient playthrough. How does the Pokemon's typing fare throughout the entire game? If a Pokemon has a better typing, it is often ranked higher.
• Stats: A Pokemon's stat distribution is crucial for its success. Does the Pokemon have a stat distribution that complements its movepool and typing? If a Pokemon has a stat distribution that favors both its typing and movepool, it will often be higher on the tier list. In general, a Pokemon with low Speed will often be ranked lower.
• Movepool: A Pokemon's movepool (both level-up and TM/HM) is crucial. What moves does the Pokemon naturally learn, and which ones can it be taught? If a Pokemon requires a TM found in a detour off the main path (like TM18 Rain Dance on the lower floor of Slowpoke Well) or from the Goldenrod Department raffle, it will be knocked down a bit.
• Major Battles: Major battles consist of rival fights, Gym Leaders, Team Rocket Executives, the Elite Four, and Champion Lance. How does the Pokemon contribute to these battles? A Pokemon that contributes to many major battles will often be ranked higher than those that do not.
• Every Pokemon's level was generally the same as most major opponents' ace Pokemon, at most outleveling them by two levels. Some opponents, like Jasmine and Clair, have ace Pokemon that are at very high levels by the time the player faces them and therefore weren't level-matched. Typical levels for the Elite Four ranged from 42 to 44, depending on how many Rare Candies were used.
• The list assumes a run with four Pokemon. However, smaller teams tend to perform better, as the Pokemon gain more experience and there is less competition for valuable TMs.
• Tampering with the clock to obtain items or Pokémon that are only available in specific times of the day or days of the week was allowed and did not negatively affect any Pokémon's viability.
• After defeating Morty, the player can complete Gyms 5-7 (and any related quests) in any order. Each Pokemon was tested with the order that is the most optimal for it. In most cases, this would be completing the Team Rocket HQ quest first, as this provides extra experience, the Sludge Bomb TM, Choice Specs, and the shiny Gyarados significantly earlier.
• Viability was determined up until Lance; anything that is exclusive to post-game (such as the Psychic TM) was not taken into account for the Pokémon's viability.

those checks should be implemented, I went with lowercase move deleter (mostly out of preference, idek which format is more appropriate either) (I'd have applied this earlier, but I am still dealing with laptop issues)

How can you unlock everything in the safari zone?

• Oh... and after you catch the geodude three-game hours later he will ask you to catch a sandshrew which you have to change the safari settings to the desert climate to catch it brocalicoconut - 14 years ago - report 7   2
• you have to wait until he actually asks you to catch the geodude, then you catch it & show it to him. Later on, he'll call you saying he has the second test ready: catching a sandshrew in the Desert area, which you'll have to access it with the newly-installed Area Customizer. Finally, after having passed both 'tests' & receiving the National Pokedex, you'll unlock Object Arrangement & the Safari Zone Link, after which he'll call every so often to tell you there are new objects available. • First you talk to Baoba and he'll say to catch a geodude IN THE SAFARI ZONE, which shouldnt be hard. Now, show Baoba geodude by making him head of party and he'll call you when he can think of something. (while he's thinking, defeat gyms in order and before the 8th gym, he should call) Now he says to catch a sandshrew but there is one problem, you can't catch sandshrew yet. So, use the area customizer to put a new area in your zone (or 'will be yours' zone): desert. Now go to desert and catch a sandshrew in the tall grass and once you've done this, put him in the head of your party. • Read above first. Defeat the elite 4 and Lance to unlock something else (get the national pokedex). now you can put items in your safari zone!!!!!!!!!!!! You can get more items but you've basically unlocked everything. p1c4chu - 14 years ago - report 2   0
• Wait a day and 6 new zones will be available from the customization computer. THEN catch a sandshrew and show it to him. He will then unlock customization allowing you to bring in blocks to put in each zone to attract new pokemon. He will phone you every now and then saying that there are blocks available. • The complete set of the safari zone will be fully customized when you finish the two tasks that the guy named baobi gives you. which were very simple.
