December is the rainiest month in Hawaii. However, it still does not pose much of an issue. Showers tend to come in short little bursts, lasting no more than about 10 minutes. You will want to carry an umbrella or lightweight rain jacket with you—just in case. However, in most cases, rain tends to fall at night in Hawaii.

If the rain worries you, consider booking your stay on the leeward side of the islands, as they tend to be drier. You can also look at the islands with the least rain in December, which include Big Island and Maui .

So you want to visit Hawaii? Understandable — it's a great place.

However, unless you're booking a spontaneous flight deal (and those do happen), you'll probably want to plan to ensure you're traveling at the best time for your particular dream trip.

Whether you're looking for dry, idyllic weather, perfect whale watching season, or the cheapest time to book a Hawaiian hotel room, consider this your definitive guide to planning a perfect trip to Hawaii.

The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather

Generally, the best weather in Hawaii is in June, July and September. This is when travelers can expect the least amount of rain along with warmer water temperatures.

However, Hawaii isn't a true four seasons state and it has pretty great weather year-round. So if traveling during June, July or September isn't in the cards, you're still probably fine as there's really no bad time to go. I just got back from a trip in mid-November and the weather was great. It was warm enough to swim in the ocean without being too hot lying in the sun.

Hawaii has a tropical climate, with temperatures generally staying between 83 and 88 degrees all year long.

You should check local weather, though, as conditions in some parts of the Islands are wetter than others depending on if you are staying on the windward or leeward sides of each island.

Kauai, for instance, gets a lot of rain on the northern side of the island compared to the southern side (which does lead to some pretty great rainbows). Even if the forecast calls for rain, however, the rain tends to come in short bursts and doesn't last long.

Best time to visit Hawaii to avoid crowds

The peak tourism season in Hawaii typically starts in the middle of December and continues until the end of March or mid-April, depending on the timing of spring break for major parts of the U.S.

The less busy season stretches from the middle of April until mid-June, when most schools are out of the summer and then resumes from September until crowds tick up before the holidays. Shoulder season is a great time to visit. The huge crowds are gone, prices are lower and you can have more of the beach to yourself. Even in busy spots like Honolulu, you'll have more breathing room after Labor Day and before Thanksgiving.

July and August, while not considered Hawaii's busiest season, still tend to draw decent crowds — and are especially popular with vacationing families.

Cheapest months to visit Hawaii

Traveling to Hawaii is usually priciest during peak season, so if you want to save, wait until the off-peak or shoulder seasons.

The shoulder seasons in Hawaii run from late March through the beginning of May, and from September until Thanksgiving. However, spring break and the beginning of September can yield high traffic and higher prices, too, so look carefully before booking.

Historical data from the travel booking site Skyscanner shows airfare is at its most expensive during the winter, specifically in January. At this time of year, average long-haul flight prices can exceed $1,400.

However, prices can plummet during the shoulder seasons or times that cushion peak periods, such as late November and early March. This past September, we saw a fare war develop with prices as low as $62 one-way to Hawaii. This is especially true if you are coming from the western half of the U.S. Keep an eye on TPG deal alerts , where we regularly cover sales to Hawaii.

We looked at historical data, and generally, the most expensive month for a room in Honolulu is January, with the least expensive month being April. Analysts tell TPG it's best to book as early as possible for the best rates in the off-season. We're told that many tourists are booking as close in as a week before arrival, and the best deals will be had as far out as possible. It pays to plan ahead.

Of course, you may have more flexibility when you cash in your points and miles — though hotel award rates tend to shift with peak and off-peak seasons, too. Also, award flight availability is often directly tied to demand.

Best time to travel to Hawaii to surf

Only four of the islands in the Hawaiian archipelago are suitable for surfing year-round: Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. As for when and where you'd like to surf, well, that depends entirely on your skill level.

The waves follow a somewhat consistent schedule. In the winter, for example, surfers can find serious swells off an island's north coast, while the south coast experiences calmer seas. During the summer, the opposite is true.

So, for advanced surfers, the winter season, or ho'oilo, which runs from mid-November to early February, is when you should look out for big wave surfing competitions on the North Shore of Oahu, also known as the "Seven Mile Miracle."

On the Big Island, surf enthusiasts should check out La'aloa Bay and Honoli'i Beach Park.

For novice surfers, you'll want to spend more time on the island's southern coasts in the winter. In Maui, beaches in Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kihei deliver just-right waves for beginners to get their feet wet.

Best time for whale watching in Hawaii

The best time to go whale watching

Whales migrate to Hawaii in pods of roughly 1,000 between late December and early April, making Maui and the Kohala Coast of the Big Island two of the best places on Earth to spot the giants. Note that sometimes whales show up as early as November, so you could get lucky if you travel during shoulder season.

The best time to see turtles

If you're interested in spotting Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), they're plentiful year-round in Maui, on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kaui and on Oahu. One of the most famous spots for turtle-spotting is on Ho'okipa Beach in Maui.

Visit in the summer, during nesting season, to increase your odds. You'll even find sea turtles on some hotel grounds. I was able to get up close and personal with turtles on a trip to the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island. At that hotel, they hang out in the hotel's lagoon.

Many vendors sell turtle snorkeling adventures and I've had great luck with two separate snorkeling trips in Hawaii.

A warning, though: please don't get too close. People are asked to give the turtles at least ten feet of space and never touch them. Human touch can spread bacteria to turtles, which can lead to starvation for the creature. Remember that green sea turtles are listed as an endangered species.

Hawaii has five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, but green sea turtles are the most common.

When to visit Hawaii for events

Summer events.

In the summer, on the third weekend of July, visitors can attend the Prince Lot Hula Festival, Hawaii's largest non-competitive hula event.

Fall events

The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is a major draw for foodies, featuring an extensive lineup of dinners, parties, cooking classes and more taking place in October and November of 2024 on three different islands – Hawaii, Maui and Oahu.

In September, travelers can attend the Aloha Festivals in Waikiki, which feature arts and crafts, food and performance stages. Don't forget the floral parade.

Winter events

This is prime season for surfing competitions, including the Vans Triple Crown of surfing on the North Shore of Oahu.

Spring events

Heading to Hawaii in the springtime? Consider the Honolulu Festival in March or the Lantern Floating Festival, held on Memorial Day yearly in Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu.

Worst time to visit Hawaii?

This is kind of a trick question, as there is really no bad time to visit Hawaii. You'll find warm weather and sunshine most of the year. Even when it does rain, it is often just for a few minutes.

That said, some locals say December is the worst time of the year because of the extra crowds, extra costs, and the increased rain shower odds. But even with all that, I'd trade Northeast winter weather for that any time of the year.

Hawaii in December: A Complete Guide

Most travelers don’t visit Hawaii when the weather’s best here – rather, when it’s at its worst everywhere else. This is why the busy season is usually from mid-December through March or mid-April. If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii, the last two weeks of December (around Christmas) are the best time to schedule your vacation. However, this is also one of the most expensive times to travel to Hawaii.

December Weather in Hawaii

You can pretty much always expect the weather in Hawaii to be comfortably warm. Daytime temperatures usually reach the low 80s while in the evenings, they tend to stay around the mid to upper 60s (Fahrenheit). A light sweater or jacket is recommended in the evening. 

In most places on Hawaii it rains quiet a lot during this time, so we recommend bringing a rain jacket and umbrella with you.

Average Temperatures

The year-round temperature doesn’t differ much. When you’re at the beach during the day, the temperature can stay around 78°F and become about 10°F cooler at night. However, how warm it is on any given day really depends on where you are on the island.

Water Temperatures

Hawaii attracts a lot of water sports lovers in December because the water tends to be warm and inviting this time of year. If you’re staying in Oahu, swimming can be particularly pleasant with water temperatures around 77°F on average.

Ocean Conditions

Spending time in the ocean is one of the most common ways for visitors to enjoy this paradise island. Depending on which island you’re staying on, you can go surfing, fishing, sailing, paddleboarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, and many other activities in December. Temperatures on the shore of Honolulu are warmer than those of Hilo, but you can still comfortably swim.

Ocean temperatures in December all around the Hawaiian Islands remain around 77-degree Fahrenheit, on average. Of course, you’ll notice slight differences depending on which side of the island you’re on.

Cost to Visit Hawaii in December

The first two weeks of December are relatively cheaper to visit compared to the last two weeks when Christmas and holiday festivities are in full swing. Still, you should be prepared to spend more during your trip since December is considered the “high season”. If you are looking for a cheaper month to visit, September in Hawaii is a good option.

Economy-class, round-trip flight tickets to Hawaii from the Midwest or East Coast can cost around $500-$900 or even more during December. The cost of round-trip business class or first class tickets can go upwards of $2,000. We recommend booking your trip 2-3 months in advance – book as early as you can. If you wait until the last possible minute to buy your ticket, you’ll pay much more than if you book at least 30 days in advance.

A good trick to find cheaper tickets is to be flexible in your travel times. For example, a lot of people prefer not to fly before 7-8:00 am or on “red-eye” (overnight) flights. If you’re willing to fly at these less-than-popular hours of the day, you can save a significant amount.

Accommodation

Once Thanksgiving is over hotel rates begin to go down, but they do get back up as the holidays approach. The Christmas week leading up to New Year’s Day can be the most expensive time to book a hotel in Hawaii. On average, hotels can cost about $250-$350 or more in December. Even the most budget-friendly hotels can cost $130-$160 per night on average.

If you have a tight budget, consider staying at a hostel or a rental condo via Airbnb or Booking.com. Many visitors find that VRBO and Airbnb are often cheaper than staying at a hotel.

Keep in mind that Oahu is the cheapest island in Hawaii and you can find a hostel or an Airbnb rental for about $50-$70 per night, even in the peak season.

Another super cheap option is to couch-surf, i.e., staying for free in a local’s home. If you do choose this option, remember to do thorough research before making your decision. It’s not for everyone after all. On the plus side, it’s, well, FREE and a great way to completely immerse yourself in the local culture.

Fun Tip: If you can’t afford to stay at a fancy hotel but still want to enjoy the luxury perks like the spa, sauna, and swimming pool, you can buy a hotel day pass for as little as $25/person. The pass will allow you to hang out at the pool and use several other amenities that only hotel guests get to enjoy.

Renting a car is the best way to explore Hawaii, especially if you’re traveling with kids because you won’t be restricted to activity shuttles or public transportation. That being said, car rental prices in Hawaii are among the highest in the nation.

In off-seasons, renting a car costs around $70-$125/day. In December, you can expect to pay around $80-145/day for the more reasonable vehicles. Larger vehicles and SUVs will be on the higher end.

Best Times to Book For Your December Vacation

For a December vacation, book your flights, accommodation, and everything else at least 30 days in advance if you can. The week of Thanksgiving is usually the best time to score savings on Christmas travel.

Many people think that booking 2-3 months in advance (for domestic travel) is the best policy – it is , unless you’re traveling during a popular holiday or peak season. Also, you may have heard that last-minute tickets are the cheapest – don’t wait for that, it happens very rarely. Sure, sometimes there can be a short window a couple of weeks out if an airline is trying to fill a plane, but it’s never a guarantee.

Is December Crowded in Hawaii?

The last two weeks sure are. If you don’t like crowds, schedule your trip for the first or second week of December. The end of the month gets really busy here with people flocking to Hawaii for the holidays.

Events in December

Here is what’s happening in the Hawaiian Islands in December:

December is when the world’s top professional surfers come together to compete in the Triple Crown of Surfing on the North Shore of Oahu . The prize money is more than $1 million. While you’re there, check out the best food trucks on the North Shore and the best beaches on the North Shore .

The Festival of Lights is also celebrated on all the Hawaiian Islands during December. On Oahu, the mayor performs the ceremony of lighting up a gigantic pine tree and other ancient trees in front of Honolulu Hale.

The Big Island

Held during the second week of December, there’s a stunning Christmas parade along Ali’i Drive in Kailua-Kona.

The Kona Surf Film Festival is also held this month at the Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. If you are a wave rider, this is where you can check out some outdoor screenings of independent movies about everything pertaining to waves. No, Fast and Furious will not be shown here!

There’s the Na Mele O Maui competition held in Kaanapali. It’s a traditional Hawaiian song and art competition held in the first week of December in the ballroom of one of the Kaanapali Resort hotels.

Lahaina Banyan Tree Lighting is another fun event scheduled for December 2 nd and 3 rd this year. The Banyan Tree Park located in the heart of Lahaina comes alive with all types of entertainment including holiday crafting, face painting, cake decorating, and more. It’s a good place to take your family to.

If you like baked goodies – who doesn’t – you can book a trip on the Maui Sugar Cane Train. Imagine delicious baked treats, live music, a crafts fair, and free toys passed around by the Santa himself. Train rides depart from Pu’ukolii every day during the Christmas week in the evenings. Tickets are $30/person.

There’s quite a few things going on in Kauai this month. Let’s start with the Annual Lights on Rice Parade in Lihue. Head over to the historic county building in Lihue where Christmas decorations will light up the whole area, along with a parade down Rice Street and local entertainment.

The Waimea Lighted Christmas Parade is usually held a week before Christmas and is a good way to enjoy the company of locals with scrumptious refreshments and entertainment. 

If you want to see major fireworks, make your way to the Poipu Beach Park on December 31 st for some New Year’s Eve festivities.

If you’re in Lanai in early December, you can see the Christmas Festival and a tree lighting ceremony featuring local food, island-style live entertainment (luau), Christmas music, goodie bags for children, and so much more.

The Christmas Light Parade in Kaunakakai is filled with holiday arts and crafts and lively music. The parade is usually held in mid-December.

And of course, there’s the Festival of Lights with its floats, marching bands, and other special activities in Kaunakakai.

Water Activities 

While there is your usual swimming, surfing, paddleboarding, and other fun stuff to do in the water here, the best thing to do in Hawaii in December is whale watching !

You don’t even have to head out in a boat – in December, you can see these magnificent sea creatures breach and spy-hop from the shore. If you’re in Maui, one of the best places is McGregor Point located at mile marker 9 along the Honoapiilani Highway.

You can also book a whale-watching cruise or a snorkel tour with the Pacific Whale Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to protecting whales from extinction. There are several daily trips you can take out of both Maalaea and Lahaina harbors.

Some other good whale-watching spots on Maui include:

Wailea Beach Marriott Resort: The Hawaii Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary installed a telescope here so people can come and see the whales through it.

Olowalu Reef: Along the straight part of Honoapiilani Highway, between Olowalu and McGregor Point, you may see whales leap out of the water. Their appearance often brings traffic to a screeching halt as people abandon their vehicles and run down to the beach to watch.

Pu’u Olai: It’s a challenging climb up this coastal landmark located near the Maui Prince Hotel, but this is the island’s best spot for off-shore whale-watching.

Another good way to spend your time here is to go boating. One of the most spectacular natural attractions in Hawaii is Kauai’s Napali Coast. There are only two ways to see it – by boat or by helicopter, unless you are willing to make the 22-mile hike.

When the Pacific humpback whales visit Hawaii from December to March, you can watch them from a boat as they swim right by Kauai. Also, there are many freshwater areas in Kauai that you can only access via a boat, such as the Menehune Fish Pond, Huleia and Hanalei national wildlife refuges, Wailua State Park, Fern Grotto, and several waterfalls. It usually costs about $80-$100 per person to book a boat tour. 

Outdoor Activities

One of the most notable outdoor adventures awaiting you on the islands is in Honolulu, Oahu. We are talking about the Honolulu Marathon , the 4 th largest marathon in the US. Over 30,000 people participate to run a scenic course of 26.2 miles. 

You can also visit the Haleakala National Park in Maui to go biking, hiking, or just exploring the enchanting forest trails. This is a preserved park with a currently dormant volcano. Legends say the Hawaiian demigod Maui hid the sun inside the forest here because he was trying to make the days longer than the nights. You can either take a hike or drive through the scenic surroundings to the Haleakala crater.

For those who crave a little danger with their adventures, try swimming in Shark’s Cove in North Shore Oahu. But don’t worry, your odds of coming across a shark are actually very low.

Other Activities Worth Mentioning

Here are some other things you can do in Hawaii during the winter months:

Birding: You’ll see many tropical birds here that are found nowhere else on earth. There are black-winged red birds, curved-bill honeycreepers, and the rare o’o, whose feathers were once used to make capes for the Hawaiian royalty. Molokai and Kauai in particular are wonderful places to spot exotic birds. Molokai’s Kamakou Preserve is home to Molokai creeper and Molokai thrush, which only live on this tiny island.

Body Boarding and Bodysurfing: Becoming one with the rolling water and riding the waves without a board is the way they roll in Hawaii (pun intended). Some bodysurfers use hand boards while some just rely on their hands to ride the waves.

Horseback Riding: Seeing Hawaii on horseback is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life. You can find riding opportunities on almost all islands, no matter how old you are or what your level of experience is. You can gallop across the wide-open spaces of the Big Island’s Parker Ranch, one of the largest privately-owned ranches in the nation; ride through Oahu’s remote windward valleys on Kualoa Ranch; or ride into Maui’s Haleakala Crater.

No. June through November is the hurricane season in Hawaii, but still big storms are extremely rare. A storm may occur in December, but the risk of a hurricane during this month is pretty negligible.

The best Hawaiian island to visit for Christmas is Oahu. Oahu is the cheapest Hawaiian destination in December, the least busy, and has the most Christmas events. Prepare to pay $7,200 to $10,000 for a family of four for a Hawaii Christmas vacation. But the ocean will be warm and the sun will be shining for Christmas.

Is Hawaii Expensive at Christmas?

Hawaii is expensive at Christmas. Hotels, vacation rentals, rental car companies, and flights are at a premium during this busy time of year in Hawaii. For example, hotel average daily rates were 24% or $69 higher than the yearly average during Christmas (source: Hawaii Tourism Authority. ) in 2020.

Rental car and hotel rates spike around the holiday as occupancy rates near 85%. That doesn’t mean you have to panic.

To save money on your Hawaii Christmas vacation , I recommend the following ways to save. I’ll provide more details below on these methods.

Cost of a hawaii christmas vacation.

We are getting good at researching the cost of a Hawaii vacation as we look at each island and time of year with our articles. To determine which island is the cheapest during the Christmas period we looked at three different costs: airfare, lodging (hotels and vacation rentals), and rental car.

Using these averages, we calculated the cost for a family of four to each island from December 23rd to January 2nd, a 10-day Hawaii Christmas itinerary. 

I’d expect the novel coronavirus will continue to impact the Hawaii tourism industry. Hotel and vacation rental occupancy rates will be down compared to 2019 and rates will be lower than in 2019. 

We use 2019 accommodations price data for our cost estimate. Prices have increased about 20 to 30 percent.

The green boxes in the tables highlight the cheapest option.

Here is what we found about how expensive Hawaii is at Christmas.

Airfare to Hawaii at Christmas

We already spilled the beans that Oahu is the cheapest island to visit during Christmas. But, Oahu has the 3rd most expensive flight to Hawaii.

Using Skyscanner, we found the average, low-cost round-trip fare from LAX to each island. We could not check Southwest as Southwest only allows reservations six months in advance. 

We found the cheapest island to fly to is Kauai for Christmas. Maui is a very close second-cheapest. But let’s face it, it is a push as they are all close. 

Ticket price for one adult, roundtrip over Christmas and New Year’s.

• Kauai (LIH): $900
• Maui (OGG): $909
• Oahu (HNL): $918
• Big Island (KOA): $930

Note, these Hawaii Christmas tickets are more than double the average roundtrip ticket cost during the year to Hawaii. 

Airlines have slashed prices and routes to Hawaii due to the virus but flights for Christmas are near the averages from 2019 still. So check ticket prices with the changing tourist industry due to the virus as December approaches.

Christmas Accommodations in Hawaii

Your accommodations during your Hawaii Christmas vacation will be your biggest expense. 

Luckily, there are plenty of options – hotels, vacation rentals, and timeshares – but budget accommodations are few and far between.

To get the average rate, we used data from the Hawaii Tourism Authority, which tracks average daily rates for hotels, vacation rentals, and timeshares. 

Fun (expensive) fact on Hawaii: Hawaii hotels are the most expensive in America. The average hotel daily rate was $283 in Hawaii followed by New York at $255 and San Francisco at $251 in 2019. In the world, the Hawaiian islands are five out of the eight most expensive sun and sea destinations. 

That is why we recommend you stay in a Hawaii vacation rental during your Christmas vacation. As the data from 2019 below shows, you can save a considerable amount on your Christmas holiday.

Basically, when it comes to accommodations at Christmas, the Big Island and Oahu are very close. Vacation rentals are slightly less expensive on the Big Island and hotels are slightly less expensive on Oahu.

Maui and Kauai proudly put themselves in the most expensive category.

Christmas Rental Car in Hawaii

Our final input is the rental car. Rental car rates skyrocket at Christmas. Book early to ensure you get a car and call them to confirm your reservation before you depart. 

For this cost, I looked at three major car rental comparison websites. We always use Discount Hawaii Car Rental because we save so much every time. We used them during our Christmas trip to the Big Island last year and the savings were similar to what the table shows below. 

Costs are for a midsize car with a major national brand, like Budget, Avis, or National. 

This is where the big island makes a bit of a leap in cost, ahead of Oahu.

Christmas in Hawaii for my family is a time to relax. Without a lot of family around, we have time to enjoy the holidays with our close friends and our family. There is no pressure for Christmas parties or big fancy dinners. Make your Hawaii Christmas vacation one for relaxing in the sun.

We prefer to eat in and do the free activities mentioned above. The towns are decorated, there are always carollers to be found in the shopping centers, and the surf is up.

Unfortunately, beauty comes at a price — especially during peak season, when paradise-seeking crowds pour onto its sands and fill up its resorts. Hawaii’s popularity and distance from the mainland mean a visit is rarely cheap, especially for those flying in from the East Coast.

That’s why the best time to visit Hawaii is during the season that fits your preference and a price you can afford. Every month has its pros and cons, so when you choose to go all comes down to your top priority, be it affordable rates, consistent sun, better chances at spotting wildlife, or stellar surfing conditions.

The Best Time to Visit Hawaii by Season

Hawaii’s weather stays relatively consistent year-round, so the state’s shoulder seasons also coincide with its low seasons. The arrival of spring marks Hawaii’s first shoulder season .

After the holiday excitement has come and gone, snowbirds head back to school and to work, trade winds and rain die down considerably, and daily temperatures begin to rise, spurring seasonal fruits and flowers — plumeria plants, jacaranda trees — to bloom once more.

Spring also means Hawaii’s whale-watching and surfing seasons are coming to a close . Winter’s big waves begin to calm down — ideal conditions for beginner surfers to test their legs — while luaus and spring festivals are equally immersive (if land-bound) ways to spend time on the islands.

Hawaii’s rainy season ends in March. Days are temperate while nights are cool , so pack a jacket. The tail-end of whale-watching season extends through the month, when breaching humpbacks can still be spotted off the coasts of Maui and Hawaii (known as “the Big Island”).

Although March is still considered low season in Hawaii, prices skyrocket around Spring Break . Schools unleash hordes of students and families taking advantage of their kids’ time off, causing flight and hotel rates to rise to meet demand.

If you’re on a budget, avoid early March as much as possible. By the end of the month, ticket prices should drop considerably and continue to do so through April and May.

Hawaii’s best spring weather is often experienced in April and May , when the dry season officially begins and daylight hours are more consistently warm and sunny.

Despite these near-ideal conditions, April sees far fewer crowds than summer or winter, making it one of the quietest, most affordable months to visit any of the islands.

Like all holidays, inflated airfare and hotel rates coincide with Easter weekend as well as Golden Week — the last week in April is Japan’s peak travel time — though prices should level off again by May.

Even less rainy than April, May in Hawaii is glorious. The sun is out, the days are long, and the waters are calm — perfect conditions for snorkeling, diving, swimming, and spending as much time as possible by the beach .

Plus, crowds are few and far between , so hotel rates are low, reservations at oceanfront restaurants are easy to come by, and there’s lots of room on the beach to spread out.

Hawaii heats up during the summer, and we’re not just referring to the humidity. Summertime is one of the busiest, priciest windows (barring the holidays) to fly to the Hawaiian Islands.

Days are hot and muggy — temperatures hover around the low 90s — but more importantly, school is out around the country, meaning both locals and vacationing families vie for prime spots on Hawaii’s beaches and book out its hotels in record numbers.

Yet despite how expensive and crowded summer gets, it’s impossible to hate on those endlessly sunny days. Hiking and snorkeling conditions peak during summer , when the trails are driest and the waters are calmest. This is also nesting season for sea turtles, which are a favorite sighting.

While dry season’s lack of rainfall is a blessing for some, waterfalls are at their weakest during the summer months. If snapping a selfie by a waterfall is on your bucket list, you might want to postpone your visit until the rainy season resumes, when cascades return in full force.

Sun-seekers love June. Hawaii’s driest month is bright and warm, free from humidity and heavy rainfall. The official start of summer also means airfare and hotel rates begin to increase as schools begin to close and vacationers scramble to log their first summer getaway.

That said, airfare in June is still more reasonable than what you’d find during winter, which might be why this month welcomes much larger crowds.

Similar to the Caribbean, June signals the start of Hawaii’s hurricane season , which lasts through November. Although rare, hurricanes and tropical storms do make landfall, so be sure to check weather reports and, if necessary, postpone your trip. The safest decision is the best one.

By now, most schools are closed for the summer, which makes July Hawaii’s busiest month . If you’re looking to avoid crowds, you might want to skip Oahu (especially Waikiki) and Maui, whose resort-lined beaches fill up the fastest.

In July, temperatures across Hawaii are at an all-time high while beaches previously off-limits due to their rough winter conditions are now open for snorkeling, swimming, and surfing for beginners. The humidity of summer lifts in October, which brings clear, warm days — temperatures average in the mid-80s — and slightly cooler nights. Since Hawaii’s dry season is coming to a close , rain starts to occur more frequently in the forecast. Aside from Labor Day weekend, hotel rates in October also trend low.

Surfing season is still well underway and the whale-watching season kicks into high gear, when pods of humpbacks in the thousands migrate from Alaska to mate and give birth in Hawaii’s warmer waters. The Best Time to Visit Hawaii by Island

April, May, September, and October beat out all of the rest of the months on Oahu thanks to their great weather, minimal crowds, and affordable room rates.

June through August are Oahu’s driest months while December through February are its wettest. Trade winds that blow in during the winter result in high waves off the north coast — perfect conditions for the island’s world-renowned surfing competitions.

If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, stay away from high season (December through March) and Golden Week (the last week in April when travelers from Japan pour into Honolulu). Waikiki and Honolulu are perpetually busy year-round .

Weather-wise, the best months to visit Maui are April, May, September, and October, unless you want to see the whales . If that’s the case, go anytime between December and March and stick to Maui’s west coast — an area that humpbacks and their newborns tend to favor.

There’s no bad time to visit Haleakala National Park , home to the world’s largest dormant volcano as well as a summit sunrise that is so stunning, it now requires reservations .

April and May are particular sweet spots for scoring more affordable hotel rates (Maui’s luxury properties tend to be pricier the rest of the year) as well as snorkeling. Since Maui is protected from trade winds, its water during the spring is as calm and as clear as it gets.

Nicknamed the “Garden Island,” Kauai is Hawaii’s lushest and rainiest island. Pack plenty of water and sunscreen before you tackle the Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast, one of the most beautiful hikes in the country. Boat tours of the Na Pali Coast run during the summer and are a great way to take in its enormous scale from afar.

If multiple dreary days are your biggest vacation nightmare, you might want to avoid Kauai in the late fall and winter, when the island receives more rain than other islands (on top of Hawaii’s rainy season).

While almost any time of year except the monsoon season is a great time to visit this remote U.S. state, prices vary significantly by season—especially during the winter (when the island is still warm, but most of America is cold). The best time to visit Hawaii is during May when many snowbirds have retreated, and the weather is pleasant, without the threat of hurricanes or excessive rainfall. May is also the tail-end of humpback whale-watching season.

Decide what you want to see and do while you're in Hawaii, and then find the best time of year to meet your requirements. If you're a return visitor, plan your trip in a different season so you can experience an entirely different way of island life. The  eight islands of Hawaii  (six of which you can visit) are Oahu, Niihau, Kahoolawe, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, and the Big Island (Hawaii). As no one island is like the other, it's recommended that you check out more than one.

The Weather in Hawaii

Despite being a tropical climate, the  weather in Hawaii  is not the same every month of the year. Hawaii has a dry season (April to October) and a rainy season (November to March). However, even the rainy season can be relatively dry when many parts of Hawaii suffer drought conditions.

The summer months can be hot and humid, especially in Honolulu and Waikiki. Hurricanes are rare but the hurricane season is from June to November. Fortunately, the last major storm to hit Hawaii was Hurricane Iniki, which severely damaged Kauai in September 1992.  

The best weather is often found in April, May, September, and October, which is also conveniently the time when you can find some good travel bargains. Since most Americans are in school or work during these months, flight and hotel prices are much lower than during the summer or winter vacation months.

Peak Season in Hawaii

Summer is when you'll find more families vacationing in Hawaii since that's when school is out in many areas of the United States. School is also out in Hawaii in June and July, so the most popular beaches on every island tend to be more crowded during those two months as well as two weeks at the end of December when the students are on winter break. Airfare tends to be more expensive during the "high" season of mid-December to mid-April. If you plan to visit during this period, make your reservations early. Like airfare, lodging tends to be more expensive during the "high" season of mid-December to mid-April.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Hawaii?

A vacation to Hawaii is not cheap. The cost is the primary reason that many people never make it to Hawaii despite their strong desire to visit the islands.

The cost of a round-trip airline ticket to Hawaii has increased substantially, but as you might expect, airfare from the West Coast is generally several hundred dollars less than from the East Coast. Fortunately, there are a large number of  airlines that fly to Hawaii , and the costs vary from day to day and airline to airline, so the key is to plan and compare prices.

While the inclination for many folks is to visit Hawaii in the winter to escape the cold and snowy winter weather on the mainland, it's not the time to find either the best weather or the best bargains. Spring in Hawaii

Late Spring can be a great time to visit Hawaii: Many of the winter crowds have gone back to school and work - the weather is typically dry and pleasant. Whale-watching seasons takes place from December through May, so there's a good chance you'll to get to see them during a spring trip.

• The Honolulu Festival, a celebration of the relationship between Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Rim region, is held over three days every March.
• If you're visiting in April, don't miss Hilo's historic Merrie Monarch Festival, a celebration honoring King David Kalakaua, otherwise known as the "Merrie Monarch." 

Summer in Hawaii

Summer is a busy season for families with children. July is the state's most-visited month, but not always the best, as the temperatures are warmer and surf can sometimes be intense. Additionally, while hurricanes aren't frequent in Hawaii, hurricane season kicks off on June 1.

• King Kamehameha Day is celebrated across the islands on June 11. The largest attraction is a celebratory parade which begins in Downtown Honolulu and finishes at Kapiʻolani Park in Waikiki.
• Experience the magic of the ukulele at Honolulu's annual festival celebrating the famed instrument. It takes place each year in July.

Fall in Hawaii

Like spring, fall is also a pleasant time to visit Hawaii. Skies are clear, and a lack of crowds can mean affordable hotel rooms and flights. Even though there's always a minimal threat of a hurricane (the season runs through Nov. 30), it's arguably the most beautiful season of the year.

• Fall's best-known event is the week-long Aloha Festivals, which consists of the Hoʻolauleʻa (a large party). The Waikiki Hoʻolauleʻa is a casual block party with food, dancing, music, and other Hawaiian traditions.

The best time to visit Hawaii is in the month of May after the winter crowds have gone home. During this month, the weather is pleasant, without excessive rainfall or the threat of hurricanes.

Flights to Hawaii are cheapest in January, right after the holiday season, and also in September, when the kids are back in school. The most expensive time to travel to Hawaii is during the state's high season, December through April, with the exception of January.

Hawaii's rainy season extends from December through March. And while it rains nearly every day year-round, rain and cloudy weather can persist for days during this time period.

With an annual visitor count that regularly approaches 10 million, Hawaii is beloved throughout the year. However, some periods are busier than others. According to the Hawaiian Tourism Authority, the most popular months for tourists are almost always June, July, and December (in some configuration). July usually takes the top spot — as it did in 2022, when it drew more than 919,000 visitors to the islands.

This aligns with the fact that Hawaii is a popular destination for families during school breaks. Summer vacation attracts many travelers, and so does winter break, especially among visitors from cold climates who'd like to spend their holidays singing "Mele Kalikimaka" on a warm, sunny beach .

Spring is another time that can draw considerable crowds. In addition to bringing American spring breakers, spring also draws Japanese travelers celebrating the so-called Golden Week , a stretch in late April and early May when four holidays are celebrated over seven days.

Best Times to Visit Hawaii for Smaller Crowds

Since school breaks are the most popular times in Hawaii, the months when school is in session tend to draw the smallest crowds. February and September consistently rank near the bottom of the tourism board's list of busiest months — in 2022, they saw 630,000 and 703,000 visitors respectively — and the months surrounding them tend to be quiet, too.

Given the holidays that happen in the spring, though, fall is perhaps the best time to plan a trip if you're looking for a long stretch of uncrowded days. There are fun events to be found at this time of year, too, like the Aloha Festivals in September and October's Hawaii Food & Wine Festival.

Best Times to Visit Hawaii for Good Weather

The weather in Hawaii is consistently warm, with temperatures slightly lower in the winter months (November to April) than in the summer (May to October). Hawaii's average daily winter temperature at the beach is 78 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average daily summer temperature is 85 degrees, according to the Hawaiian Tourism Authority . Water temperatures are usually pleasant, too: they average around 74 degrees most of the year but inch up to around 80 degrees in the summer.

Rainfall is at its lowest in Hawaii from April through October, but even the wetter winter months aren't too bad. Rain is most common on the northeastern (or windward) sides of the Hawaiian islands , meaning sunseekers can stick to the leeward southwestern edges for the best chance of clear skies. Hawaiian rain showers are also famous for producing rainbows — so drizzly days have their perks.

The timing of severe weather can sometimes be hard to predict, since tropical storms and cyclones can happen year-round in the Pacific. But the Hawaii Department of Health warns that hurricane season officially runs from June through November.

Best Times to Visit Hawaii for Lower Prices

Hawaiian Airlines reports that traveling to the state is generally cheapest in the shoulder seasons of late spring and early fall — and they should know, considering they operate both nonstop flights to Hawaii from the United States, Asia, and the South Pacific, as well as inter-island flights that can get you from one Hawaiian island to another. For more savings, the airline suggests booking your flights so you're arriving and departing on weekdays, not weekends. Generally speaking, hotel rates soar in Hawaii during the Christmas and New Year holidays in late December and early January, and again during spring break and summer vacation dates. So, if you want to cut costs on both accommodations and airfare, avoid those times of the year.

Another way to visit without worrying about airfare and hotel costs is to hop aboard a Hawaiian cruise . Choose an itinerary that visits outside of the peak tourist seasons, and you'll have great odds of experiencing all that Hawaii has to offer without any exorbitant on-shore costs.

Best Times to Go Surfing in Hawaii

Visitors and locals can surf year-round on Hawaii's famous waves, but there are a few things to keep in mind if you're planning to hang ten . Waves are usually larger during the winter months, says the Hawaiian Tourism Authority, especially on the islands' north-facing shores, so conditions aren't ideal for beginners learning to surf.

If you want to watch the experts tackle some big waves, though, this can be a fun time to visit. Hawaii is known for spectacular 4th of July fireworks displays. The 4th of July fireworks shows are total crowd pleasers, with average attendance being somewhere around 50,000 people. Hawaiian summers can be deceivingly hot, and August is the high season for families to visit the islands. This month is also an incredibly popular time for honeymooners to visit this tropical paradise. Temperatures begin to soar in August, and the average temperatures are in the high 80s to low 90s. August nights remain relatively balmy in the 70s, and the odds of rain are low. Keep in mind that less rain means less water, so this isn’t a great time to visit waterfalls.

August is a peak tourist season in Hawaii, and families travel to the islands early in the month due to most U.S. schools beginning later in the month. That means the first two weeks of August are usually the busiest time, and crowds start dissipating as the month draws to a close. August is one of the best months to travel for Hawaiian Festivals, as there are many fun cultural events during this time. Enjoy the annual Ho’oku’i Kahi Establishment Day Hawaiian Cultural Festival on the Big Island of Hawaii . September also brings some of the warmest water temperatures of the year.

Labor Day weekend does tend to be crowded in Hawaii. However, after the holiday, crowds dissipate very quickly. September is a great month to visit the Hawaiian Islands to avoid crowds. This is also one of the best times to visit in terms of accommodations and airfare prices. Hotel prices dip well below average at $340 per night, and you can get great deals on airfare during this shoulder season.

Those looking for festivals will love visiting Hawaii in September. The annual Aloha Festival on Oahu runs through September and features unique events. You can enjoy Hawaii’s largest street party, parades, and plenty of cultural food, fun, and music.

Hawaii In October

The rainy season begins each October in Hawaii so bring an umbrella ! But you can absolutely still enjoy the beauty of the islands during this time of year. In Hawaii, rain tends to fall at night and won’t play a huge role in your visit to any of the islands. Keep in mind that the Big Island of Hawaii sees the least rainfall, while Kauai sees the most rain annually. October temperatures are tropical, in the low 80s, with evenings being pleasant in the low 70s.

This is hurricane season in the Pacific, and although Hawaii isn’t affected by hurricanes often, they are still possible. If you want to avoid the summer crowds, then October is a great time to visit Hawaii. For those on a budget, October brings price drops for both accommodations and airfare . Hotel prices average $325 per night and airfare drops below average in October.

Foodies will want to plan their trip to Hawaii during October for the annual Food and Wine Festival . The festival covers multiple islands over the course of three weekends. Each event features master chefs, culinary personalities, and wine and spirits producers. The Coconut Festival on Kauai honors the coconut with artisans, cooking demos, crafters, entertainment, and coconut games. Besides the busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend, November is a great time to avoid crowds. The lack of visitors comes with a drop in prices in terms of hotel and airfare . You should avoid traveling at the end of the month to dodge the holiday crowds. Hotels typically range from $325 per night at the beginning of the month to $340 per night by the end of the month. Airfare is also lower in November, making it a great month to visit Hawaii for those traveling on a budget.

Coffee lovers should consider visiting the Big Island of Hawaii in November for the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival . We visited Hawaii in April

When: early to late April (2023)

Where: Kauai and Big Island

Our experience:

• We visited on the tail end of spring break , and had trouble finding accommodation when booking (kind of last minute). Overall, we found Kauai to be harder to find accommodation than on Big Island; though, we were wanting to stay in one place in Kauai, so that may have made it trickier. 
• Accommodation in Hawaii is very expensive all year round. While we likely paid less than at the very peak of tourist season, it was still very expensive. 
• On Kauai we had decent weather . We had a mix of rain and some totally sunny days. 
• While hiking on the Kalalau Trail (Kauai), we encountered very muddy paths and one torrential downpour, which made the hike quite a bit harder than in the drier summer months.
• On Big Island, we had near perfect weather, and since the island is more spread out, it didn’t feel very crowded. 

Would we recommend visiting Hawaii in April? 

Mostly, yes. We had good weather overall, however, if you can go at a different time of the year, you may find better availability and rates on accommodations.

Hawaii is in the Pacific Ocean, 2,000 miles west of the California coast. Only 7 of its 132 islands are inhabited : Big Island (Hawaii), Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau.

The Hawaiian islands mark the southeast end of a sequence of volcanoes that started forming over 70 million years ago. All have volcanic terrain, dotted with lush rainforests and fringed by white and black sand beaches . 

Each of the islands experiences its own unique micro-environment, with geographic features including volcanic valleys, tropical rainforests, arid deserts, and high-altitude alpine regions shaping the topography. 

There are also sometimes significant differences in temperatures, humidity, and rainfall at sea level versus higher elevations. 

This explains why the best time to visit Hawaii isn’t necessarily specific to each island, but rather to the different regions within each individual island .

Unlike other destinations, tropical Hawaii experiences just two seasons: summer and winter . Fall and spring? Not in Hawaii!

If you’re chasing the biggest waves , the best time to visit Hawaii is between January and March . However, surfing is available year-round in the state where the pastime originated. 

For beaches and snorkeling adventures , you can enjoy the Hawaiian sand and reefs in any month. Just bear in mind that in general, the northern shores are recommended in winter, and the southern shores during summer.

The best time to visit Hawaii's Big Island is between September and November. That's when the island's generally reasonable room rates take the most significant plunge. Best Island to Visit in Hawaii in December

Before I really dive into which one of Hawaii’s islands is best for visiting in December, I need to confess. There really isn’t a best island to visit in Hawaii in December! Every single one of the Hawaiian Islands is perfect in December.

In fact, this is a great time of year for first-time visitors and those who love spending time in Hawaii. Nonstop flights are often available on Hawaiian Airlines, American, United, Delta, Alaska Airlines, and more from various cities.

You can also find direct flights between the islands. This is perfect if you want to island hop during your vacation!

I could even argue that December is the best time of the year to visit the Hawaiian islands. It’s cold in most parts of the US, so who doesn’t need some sunshine and relaxation? 

Before we get started, I want to remind you that being a respectful tourist (in fact, don’t be a tourist, be a visitor!) is very important. Check out my post on 30 things you should never do in Hawaii to learn what to avoid during your Hawaii vacation. 

So I’ve already stated that there is no worst island to visit in Hawaii in December. The only downfall to visiting certain islands is there can be more crowds due to the holiday season. Everyone wants to spend the holidays and the New Year on the main islands.

This means car rentals will book quickly. So will accommodations and tours. Don’t wait to book either of those two things. Public transportation isn’t always an option for everything you want to do on the Hawaiian Islands. You need to rent a car!

You may want to arrive in early December if you prefer fewer crowds. Or consider other times of the year. Although, maybe not spring break or the summer holidays as many kids are off from school then.

Reasons Why Every Hawaiian Island is the Best Island to Visit in December

At this point, maybe you are looking for another good reason why every Hawaiian Island is the best island to visit in December. If that is the case, let me share a few of those reasons with you!

Warm weather – The weather is always warm in Hawaii! The only exceptions are high altitudes like Mauna Kea or Haleakala, but seeing SNOW during your Hawaii vacation is pretty cool. Plus, you’re not up there long.

Outdoor activities – There are plenty of outdoor activities to keep everyone occupied in the good weather.

Snow-capped mountains – You can still see snow-capped mountains during a vacation in Hawaii, United States.

Humpback whales – Whale sightings increase during the month of December on the islands. I have a blog post with The Best Time for Whale Watching in Hawaii.

Avoid hurricane season – Your Hawaii vacation won’t be interrupted by a hurricane. Still, don’t worry; Hawaii rarely gets hit by hurricanes any time of the year. 

Now that I got that out of the way, let’s focus on the three islands I think are the best to visit in December.

Maui in December

Maui always comes in at the top of my list for the best Hawaiian Island to visit in December. Arriving on this island during the winter months is like finally finding your little piece of paradise.

Staying on the South Shore or the western side of the island (the two places with all the accommodations) practically guarantees good weather. The average high temperature is in the mid-70s at this time of year. Rainfall amounts are also low in this part of Maui.

I’m not saying you must stay in South Maui or West Maui. You can stay on the north shore or east coast, but there aren’t many options that I recommend. If the Road to Hana is your main focus for your vacation in Maui, don’t worry, it’s easily accessed from other parts of the island. 

As you are appreciating the average daytime temperatures, you may find yourself spending time on beautiful beaches. Thankfully, the winter weather doesn’t bring cold ocean waves to Hawaii. The water temperatures are still warm.

Yes, it may seem strange to be belting out Christmas carols while splashing around in warm water. But that’s what you do while on vacation in Hawaii in December!

Just be careful when entering the ocean. Winter swells can occur. It is best to check the water conditions before you head to the beach for the day.

Whale Watching in Maui

The best Hawaiian Island for whale watching is Maui. The humpback whales love spending time in the waters of the Au’au Channel. You can usually see the whales from the great beaches on Maui. However, a whale-watching tour offers the best way to see the whales up close.

Other Things to Do in Maui in December

Whale watching is the best thing to do in Maui in December and the rest of the winter months. However, there can add many other things to your itinerary to keep busy.

Visit the Maui Ocean Center

The Maui Ocean Center is perfect when you want to see marine life without entering the water. Inside this aquarium, there is a sea turtle lagoon, as well as a 35-foot shark tunnel.

Want to add a unique experience to your Hawaii vacation? Consider doing the shark dive at the Maui Ocean Center. This dive allows you to go into the water and get close to many of the sharks. This is an excellent option if you have little kids uncomfortable in the water.

Go Snorkeling

If you don’t mind swimming in the ocean, you can get close to marine life by snorkeling. You can head out on your own or sign up for a snorkeling tour.

In my opinion, Molokini Crater is the best place to snorkel in Maui. You do have to take a tour because you can’t get to the island on your own (not easily, anyway!) I also have a blog post on Snorkeling Molokini Crater.

One of the other best snorkeling spots on the west coast of Maui is Honolua Bay and Black Rock on Kaanapali Beach.

Visit the Nakalele Blowhole

The Nakalele Blowhole basically looks like a geyser. Ocean water is pushed through an underwater cave. You can capture some spectacular selfies here. Of course, you need to have your camera ready when the water shoots out!

Drive the Road to Hana

Driving the Road to Hana takes you along the northern Maui coastline. This road is just over 64 hours long. You can easily drive it in a couple of hours. I don’t recommend that because that means you won’t be stopping at all the incredible sights along the way!

You can drive your own rental car for this adventure. Or you can sign up for one of the Road to Hana sightseeing tours. The latter might be the best option if you don’t want to deal with the hairpin turns this road is known for.

Explore Whaler’s Village

A great place to purchase souvenirs in Maui is Whaler’s Village. You can find a large variety of local options, as well as brand names. You might need those brand-name items if you forgot to pack something in your suitcase.

Experience the Sunrise or Sunset at Haleakala National Park

The most spectacular sunrise in the world can be seen from the summit at Haleakala National Park. The area’s natural beauty makes the perfect backdrop for all the brilliant colors in the sky.

You must plan your visit in advance. This is because you now need a reservation to view the sunrise from the summit area. This reservation is for parking your car at the summit. It doesn’t include the cost of entering the park.

After the sun comes up, you can head over to Haleakala Crater. This dormant volcano offers fantastic views. I recommend a tour since you’ll have to start very early (think 3 AM), and most people don’t live to drive unfamiliar roads at night. 

You can even do a tour where you get to bike down (don’t worry, it’s downhill!) after seeing the sunrise. 

If you can’t get up early enough to see the sunrise, consider visiting this park for the sunset. Stay a little longer; twinkling stars will greet you in the sky.

Big Island of Hawaii

Is the Big Island the best island to visit in Hawaii in December? The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest island of all the islands. This is the island you will want to visit if you prefer to see snow-capped mountains in December. However, don’t worry; the rest of the island will be nice and warm!

There is very little rain on the Big Island during this month on most parts of the island. Yet, the wind can pick up without notice. That wind can make the average temperature of the upper 70s feel much cooler.

It is important to note that areas with higher elevations, like Mauna Kea, will be much colder. 

All the weeks of December bring different events to the Big Island of Hawaii. I’m going to share a couple of them with you, as well as the other things to do in Hawaii in December.

December Events in Hawaii

Here are some Christmas events on the Big Island of Hawaii in December. 

Christmas Parade in Kailua-Kona

If you happen to be staying in Kailua-Kona during the second week of December, you will want to see the Christmas Parade. This parade goes along Ali’i Drive.

Kona Surf Film Festival

The Kona Surf Film Festival is held at the Courtyard Marriott King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel every December.

Things to Do on the Big Island of Hawaii in December

Here are a few things to do on the Big Island of Hawaii in December, in no particular order. 

Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

This national park was established in 1916. There are two active volcanoes inside the more than 335,000 acres. Those volcanoes are Kileuea and Mauna Loa. One of the inactive volcanoes is Mauna Kea.

I recommend hiking the Kilauea Iki Trail, but bring lots of water! 

You can see lava tubes, craters, and Hawaiian cultural sites during your visit. One destination in the park that should be on your must-see list is the Halema’uma’a Crater. Doing the looped hike to the steamy Sulphur Banks is necessary if you have the time.

I also recommend driving along Crater Rim Drive. It’s an almost 19-mile road that offers spectacular views at all the stops. This is an easy day trip if you are staying on the Kona side. There is no need to stay on this part of the island.

Snorkel with manta rays

Snorkeling with manta rays is one of the best things to do on the Big Island and is unique to this island. There isn’t really a “best time of the year” to snorkel with manta rays, but December is as good of a time as any! And yes, the water is warm enough. I recommend Hang Loose Boat Tours . 

Enjoy Some Kona Coffee

Of course, time in Kona can be spent drinking authentic Kona coffee! While in Kona country, visit a coffee farm for a tour. At the end of your tour, you get to drink a sample of freshly brewed coffee.

Walk Along Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

Hawaii island is known for its black sand beaches. This is one of the best black sand beaches. You can easily stop here on your way to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

This isn’t your best option for swimming. You will want to choose another beach for that activity. It is an excellent spot to watch the Hawaiian green sea turtles. Learn more about where to spot the beautiful sea turtles in where to find sea turtles on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Hike to Papakolea Green Sand Beach

The only way to reach Papakolea Green Sand Beach is by hiking two and a half miles each way. I recommend visiting in the morning if possible. This way, the sun is lower, and it isn’t as warm out.

Please do NOT attempt to drive to the beach or ride with someone else who is driving. This is causing corrosion, and if tourists continue to do this, this beach will end up becoming inaccessible and illegal to visit. 

Check Out Some Waterfalls

If this is your first visit to the Big Island, you will want to take the time to check out some waterfalls. It does rain more (on some parts of the island, particularly the east side) in the winter, meaning it’s the prime time to see the waterfalls!

A hike along a trail that is less than half a mile is necessary to see “Akaka Falls. This waterfall draws crowds, so arrive early. The trail is paved and very easy to access for most.

I also recommend visiting Rainbow Falls early in the day. That is when the light hitting the mist forms rainbows. You will find this waterfall inside Wailuku River State Park.

Learn a Little History at Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

Centuries ago, locals made their way to this area after breaking the law. This was the only way they could avoid being punished by death.

This entire park has been completely restored. You will feel as if you are reliving history as you walk along the self-guided trail.

Is oahu the best island to visit in Hawaii in December?

The weather in Oahu is similar to all the other islands in December. The average temperature reaches the upper 70s, with the lows dropping to the mid-60s.

Rain is common during this month, but it is not nonstop, nor is it in all parts of the island. Most showers will last 10 minutes or so. The result will be having the chance to spot a rainbow or two on your adventures.

The ocean conditions are also perfect at this time of year. If you know you want to spend time at the beach, I recommend choosing from the most luxurious resorts this island offers. Many of them are directly on the beach. This makes the walk to the sand simple every morning.

Things to Do in Oahu in December

Here are a few things to do in Oahu in December.

Attend the Festival of Lights Boat Parade

One of the best things to do on Oahu in December is to attend the Festival of Lights Boat Parade. This event is held at the Hawaii Kai Towne Center.

During the parade, there is live music, as well as hula performances. You might only be there for all the beautifully lit boats.

Check Out Honolulu City Lights

Another favorite holiday activity in Oahu is checking out the Honolulu City Lights. This event takes place throughout the entire month. This is good news because it means you can arrive early when there are fewer visitors.

This is one of the best places for seeing Christmas lights on a Hawaii island. In addition to the lights, there are Shaka Santa and Mrs. Claus statues and Christmas trees.

Plan to stay for a couple of hours. This will ensure you can participate in many of the activities.

Take a Walk at Diamond Head

Diamond Head is always at the top of the to-do list for many people visiting Oahu. This walk isn’t too difficult. People are aware of this, so it will seem like everyone is there at the same time.

I recommend arriving early if you want fewer crowds. This will give you more space to enjoy the views of Waikiki Beach and the ocean. You now need a reservation , so make sure to get that ahead of time. 

Go Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay

The Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is the best place for snorkeling out of all the major islands in Hawaii. Your family will have a good time as you check out all the marine life in the bay.

Take a Tour of Pearl Harbor

If you read any ultimate guide to Oahu, one of the first things it will tell you to do is book a tour of Pearl Harbor . Oahu is the best island to vacation on when you want to visit this historic site.

You can do this adventure on your own or sign up for one of the many available tours.

Relax at Waikiki Beach

With all the adventures you have on Oahu, you are going to want to spend a couple of hours relaxing on Waikiki Beach. Or any other beach you stumble upon.

This is quite “the gathering place,” during the summer months. You should still be able to find a spot in the sand during the high season in December.

You won’t find too many big waves at this beach in Oahu. At least, not if you have the best weather for your vacation.

Watch the Sunset at Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is on the north shore of Oahu. It isn’t a hidden gem, but it isn’t as well known as Waikiki Beach.

As the name suggests, it is one of the best places to watch the sunset. I recommend arriving a couple of hours early. This will allow you to find the perfect spot to watch the magic happen.

Participate in Watersports at Waimea Bay

Waimea Bay is on the north shore of Oahu. It is one of the best places for watersports, especially during the winter months when the big waves roll in.

This is where you will want to watch people surfing and bodyboarding in the Aloha State. Unless this is your first time surfing, you may even want to try to catch a wave yourself. Although, I would save that for the summer months when the waves are calmer.

Visit the Jurassic Valley at the Kualoa Ranch

If you are a Jurassic Park fan, you will want to consider taking a UTV tour at Kualoa Ranch. This ranch encompasses many of the film locations from blockbuster movies. There are many tour options to choose from if you don’t want to ride a UTV. Here are some of my favorites:

• Jurassic Valley Zipline

Check Out the Polynesian Cultural Center

Hands-on activities are everywhere throughout the 42 acres of space at the Polynesian Cultural Center . These activities are amongst the 6 island villages.

After exploring the rich culture within the different villages, you can head out on a canoe tour. Or you can do a little shopping at the Hukilau Marketplace.

If you stay late enough, you can attend a show. Ha: Breath of Life features traditional songs and dances.

These are the three Hawaiian Islands I recommend visiting during the month of December. But remember, you don’t need to limit yourself to just those islands. After all, the island of Kauai is known as Garden Isle.

On that island, you can easily explore Waimea Canyon – known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

You can hike the trails at Waimea Canyon to the different lookouts. However, if you are searching for a unique experience, I recommend taking a helicopter tour over the entire island. The helicopters allow you to appreciate the scenery from a different vantage point.

How to spend the ultimate weekend on Oʻahu, Hawaii

There’s a reason why Oʻahu is nicknamed the Gathering Place – it’s the Hawaiian island that has everything.

Here you'll enjoy buzzy restaurants, golden beaches , luxe resorts, historic sites, walkable neighborhoods, trendy boutiques and hiking trails with breathtaking panoramic views.

Born and raised on the island, Oʻahu is more than just my home. It’s where I surfed my first wave, where I fell in love with hiking, where I always want to come back to after traveling elsewhere. It combines the excitement of city life with the laid-back island vibe of sunny beaches, verdant mountains and mai tais by the pool.

A long weekend may not be enough – but it’s a start. First, here are some quick tips to help you plan:

• When to arrive: Arriving on a Thursday morning is perfect. That way you’ll have a full day to rest and unwind before an extended 3-day weekend.
• How to get from the airport: It's best to rent a car at the airport. You’ll need one to explore the entire island (the  public bus system is great, with stops all over Oʻahu, but it’s faster to get around in a rental car). Rideshare is available, too; the average cost from the airport to Waikiki (about 9 miles) is $30.
• Getting around: The city bus has routes all over the island, with stops at the most popular visitor attractions on Oʻahu. The Waikiki Trolley offers limited routes, the farthest to Sea Life Park, about 15 miles from Waikiki. The  city’s only bikeshare program is available in urban Honolulu . To see all of Oʻahu, though, you’ll need a rental car.
• Where to stay: Of all the islands, Oʻahu has the most diverse range of accommodations, from budget-friendly  Hotel Renew in Waikiki to the luxe  Four Seasons Resort Oʻahu in Ko Olina on the island’s west side. It’s the only island with a  Disney-themed hotel  (also located in Ko Olina), complete with water slides and character-filled breakfast experiences.
• What to pack: Bring casual beachwear, something warm just in case, shoes you can walk and hike in, something dressy for dinner, swimwear, flip flops (we call them slippers) and reef-safe sunscreen.

Morning: Assuming you’re staying in Waikiki, wake up and head out early. Grab a bullet coffee or acai bowl at Sunrise Shack , a cute North Shore-based cafe started by surfers with a location in the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort . If you’re looking for a casual breakfast, head to Heavenly Island Lifestyle Waikiki ; this laid-back spot has a variety of brunch dishes, from sweet bread French toast with local honey and fruits to a spicy tomato shakshuka. Morning is the best time to walk along Waikiki Beach and watch surfers nab early waves.

How to spend the day: Waikiki is the birthplace of surfing – and it also happens to be the best place on the island to learn the sport. Book with locally owned Waikīkī Beach Services for a 75-minute lesson in the friendly waves where Native Hawaiian Olympians Duke Kahanamoku and Carissa Moore both grew up surfing. Or jump in an outrigger canoe – an important part of Hawaiʻi’s rich culture – to catch waves. This is the only place on the island where you can experience outrigger canoe surfing.

My go-to, post-surf lunch spot is Rainbow Drive-In on Kapahulu Ave. This local favorite, around for more than 60 years, serves hearty plate lunches and slush floats, which I highly recommend. For something lighter, get an ahi poke (cubed raw fish) bowl from nearby  ʻOno Seafood . Try the boiled peanuts – it’s a local specialty.

Dinner: Sip on handcrafted cocktails at sunset at Hau Tree , the oceanfront restaurant at the revamped Kaimana Beach Hotel. Share a bunch of small plates or splurge on the housemade pasta or fresh fish entrées. If you want to get out of Waikiki, Chinatown – about 4 miles west – boasts some of the island’s best restaurants, including Fête Hawaiʻi , a hip bistro with great cocktails and dishes inspired by French, Italian, Korean and Hawaiʻi flavors. In 2022, chef-owner Robynne Maii was the first female chef from Hawaii to win the prestigious James Beard Award, the state’s first in nearly 20 years. I’m obsessed with the Chaz burger, local-style carbonara and the Rocky Road to Hana ice cream. Reservations are required.

After dark: Oʻahu is the only Hawaiian island with a robust nightlife, and Waikiki is a great spot to find live music. Located in the Outrigger Waikīkī Beach Resort, Blue Note Hawaii is an intimate venue – just 326 seats with a full-service restaurant and bar – that hosts a range of musical and comedy talents, from LeeAnn Rimes to Rob Schneider. Halekūlani’s House Without a Key offers traditional hula and live Hawaiian music until 10pm.

Morning: Get an early start with a 30-mile drive to the North Shore along the Kamehameha Highway (that means heading east toward Kahuku.) The drive is part of the experience. This two-lane highway hugs the coastline, passing through rural towns, past roadside farm stands and stretches of empty beaches. Stop for a Spam musubi (block of rice with a slice of fried Spam on top, wrapped with a strip of nori) and butter mochi at the family-run Kaya’s Store in Hauʻula or a slice of chocolate- haupia (coconut) pie at Ted’s Bakery near Sunset Beach.

How to spend the day: If you’re on Oʻahu during the winter months, you’ll likely witness the spectacle surrounding the seasonal big waves. Beaches are packed with surfers and spectators, eager to catch the winter’s monster surf. During other times of the year, though, this stretch of coastline is quieter, the beaches less crowded. Laniakea Beach is a popular stop to see honu , or Hawaiian green sea turtles, basking on the beach (you have to stay at least 10ft away from them on land and in water). Or grab a snorkel – you can rent one from a surf shop – and hit Shark’s Cove, with natural rocky outcroppings that protect tide pools home to more than 70 fish species (this is a summer activity, as ocean conditions are calm). Feast on garlicky shrimp scampi from Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck or head to the roadside cafe at the family-run Kahuku Farms for a smoothie, slice of farm pizza or acai bowl, the ingredients of which are grown on-site.

Dinner: There’s nothing better than eating outdoors — except eating farm-to-table dishes crafted by James Beard Award-winning local chef Roy Yamaguchi. His restaurant, Roy’s Beach House at the recently updated Turtle Bay Resort , offers stunning ocean views and a menu that includes inventive sushi rolls, seafood and his signature molten chocolate cake. If you’re here on a Wednesday, the hotel’s Paniolo Lūʻau is worth checking out.

Morning: Catch the sunrise at the top of the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail, better known as the Lanikai Pillbox Trail. It’s a 1-mile, mostly uphill trek to two concrete pillboxes built in early 1943. I park at Kailua Beach and walk to the trailhead, which is tucked away in a residential neighborhood. There’s no better view of the famous Nā Mokulua (“twin islands”) off Lanikai Beach. Then head to Over Easy , a casual family-run eatery that serves crispy-edged pancakes, Cinnamon Toast Crunch-crusted French Toast and (my favorite) potato ‘n‘ eggs.

How to spend the day: I regularly walk Kailua Beach , which stretches for 2.5 miles with views of Popoiʻa Island (aka Flat Island) and the Mokulua Islands. Enjoy a nice stroll or just sit and watch the action: kiteboarders, canoe paddlers, swimmers, folks walking their dogs. Stop at Kalapawai Market for a quick snack, sandwich or fish taco. This coastal town is very walkable, with cute boutiques, hip coffee shops and trendy restaurants all nearby. Treat yourself to shave ice at Island Snow Hawaiʻi ; the shop (which Hawaiʻi-born President Barack Obama frequents) boasts all-natural syrups in island flavors like lilikoʻi (passion fruit), guava, Kona coffee and dragon fruit. Then wander through the aisles of Bookends , a beloved new and used bookshop, where you can find beach (or airplane) reads for under $5. 

If you must now end your Oʻahu vacation, make the 30-minute drive from Kailua to the airport. If not, explore the rest of this beach town, to see what else Oʻahu has to offer. And trust me, there’s a lot more.

I went to Hawaii for the first time. My trip would've been better if I'd known these 5 things before I left.

• I visited Hawaii for the first time, and there are things I wish I'd known before the trip. 
• Figuring out that there's more than one Leonard's Bakery on Oahu would've saved me some stress.
• I also wish I'd known how easy it would be to get around the island — I could've explored even more.

Well over 1 million people have already visited the Hawaiian Islands this year, and I was lucky enough to be one of them.

I went on a nine-day trip to Oahu that included a stay at Disney's Aulani Resort in Ko Olina.

Because this was my first time visiting Hawaii, I tried to do as much research as possible before my trip. But after arriving, I still wished I'd known a few things.

I thought it would be much harder to get around the island.

Before leaving for Oahu, I'd heard from friends and read on social-media groups that getting around could be difficult. My fears of sitting in traffic for the whole week set in before I even stepped foot off the plane.

In reality, my family and I never got stuck in gridlocked traffic over our six days on the island.

A hotel worker we met said no matter what part of the island you were on, the big secret was to head out after 9 a.m. and try to make your way back either before 3 p.m. or after 6 p.m.

My family and I followed this rule every day of our trip and never had much traffic to deal with while we traveled from Ko Olina to Pearl Harbor and Ko Olina to the North Shore.

We also found the drivers to be much more courteous than we're used to back in Florida. No one weaved in and out of the cars around us.

The kind of sunscreen you pack matters.

My packing list for Hawaii was long, but one of the most important items was sunscreen. Hawaii is close to the equator, so the UV rays are even stronger on the islands.

But I wished I'd known more about the islands' rules around reef-safe sunscreen before I started packing.

Hawaii passed a law banning the sale of sunscreens with the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate that went into effect in 2021. And some counties allow only mineral-based sunscreens.

I ended up using Sun Bum sunscreen throughout my stay, and now that I know more, I'll continue to use it in Florida to help protect coral reefs.

I wish I'd known there's more than one Leonard’s Bakery on the island.

One of the most talked about spots on Oahu is Leonard's Bakery , known for its Portuguese-style doughnuts named malasadas.

The main store is near Honolulu, which was about a 40-minute drive from where we were staying. I'd pretty much accepted that we'd have to budget a few hours one day to try the sugary treats.

But once we landed on Oahu, we noticed a Leonard's Bakery food truck — lovingly named Malasadamobiles — about 10 minutes from the resort.

The truck dished out hot malasadas to order, but it didn't offer the main bakery's extended menu. That was the only real trade-off for us, but it was worth it to save on driving time.

The weather can change depending on what side of the island you’re on.

The weather can be drastically different around Oahu. For instance, when my family left Ko Olina on the western side of the island to drive to the North Shore, the sun was out, and it was very warm.

About an hour into our drive, we passed by Kualoa Ranch (a filming location for "Jurassic Park"), and it was suddenly cooler and cloudy.

Once we got to the North Shore, the sun was back out, and we were able to enjoy our day of beach hopping.

Learning a few key Hawaiian phrases goes a long way with locals.

Knowing some key sayings and phrases in a native language goes a long way with locals, no matter where you're traveling. I knew some basic Hawaiian words — such as "aloha" (hello) and "mahalo" (thank you) — but I wish I'd learned a few more.

While I was there, one new phrase I learned that came in handy was "a hui hou," which means "until we meet again."

We stayed in some spots for a few days, so it was nice to say that to the people we'd connected with on our way out.
