KidCo Peapod Portable Travel Bed : This tent-style sleeper quickly pops open, and the padded base is a cinch to snap on. While the fabric is somewhat thin, it's super lightweight and easy to carry, too. However, in the end, we just liked the other KidCo model better.

Baby Delight Snuggle Nest Harmony Portable Infant Lounger : We liked the small, lightweight design of this product. But since it's technically a lounger rather than a crib, it's really designed to be a safe place to set your infant down — not necessarily a place to sleep. When in doubt, check with your pediatrician before using it.

Pamo Babe Deluxe Portable Nursery Center : While this crib was incredibly easy to set up, we thought it lacked durability as it had a tendency to collapse as it grew closer to the weight limit.

Tips for Buying a Travel Crib

Put safety first.

Whether for travel or nightly sleep, safety should be a top priority when buying a crib. Per the CPSC's current guidelines , the mattress should be relatively firm to prevent rolling. And you shouldn't add extra padding or bedding until your child is at least 12 months old, as the materials can pose a suffocation risk.

"Get a travel crib that is current from a major brand," says Dr. Goodstein, "and use the mattress that's included." He adds that, aside from a sleep sack, you really don't need anything other than a mattress and a tight-fitting crib sheet.

Know the important features 

Travel cribs come with various features — some for safety and others for comfort or convenience. This may include user-friendly foldability, a carrying case, a firm mattress, padded edges, concealed zippers, or breathable mesh sides.

"Some have a bassinet feature, which is convenient for new mothers (not bending over) and small/younger newborns," says Dr. Goodstein. "With or without, they should be used properly, following the weight, age, and developmental limitations set within the product instructions and warnings."

Consider the type of trip you're taking

When browsing options, consider the type of trip you're taking and where you plan on using the crib. If you're traveling by plane , some (but not all) airlines allow you to check portable cribs for free (along with travel strollers and car seats). But if you're not checking baggage, make sure it's small enough to pass as a carry-on.

Some small travel cribs can be folded up super compactly and even tucked inside a suitcase. But larger options that come with their own carry bags will usually need to be toted around separately. If you just need something for the occasional overnight, you have more flexibility in terms of size.

The main difference between a travel crib and a regular crib is that the former is typically foldable and relatively lightweight. But as long as it has a proper mattress and sides that prevent rolling off, you can use a travel crib as a regular crib.

"The newer ones, for the most part, should be fine," says Dr. Goodstein. "If you're going to use a sheet in there, make sure it's a fitted sheet for that specific type of crib."

Travel crib mattresses are roughly 38 x 24 inches, which is the size of a mini crib mattress. Getting a fitted sheet in the proper size is crucial, as loose fabric can be dangerous for sleeping babies. "These little ones don't have good head [or hand] control — they can't brush something off of their face," explains Dr. Goodstein. "Something as light as a sheet can cause suffocation."

Some travel cribs fit into overhead compartments, but it varies by model. While it's different for each airline, the maximum dimensions for carry-ons is usually 22 x 14 x 9 inches, so be sure to measure the packed-up size before your trip.

While most airlines will check strollers and carseats for free, travel cribs are considered luggage and will be charged as such. Be sure to check with your specific airline in advance to determine what baby gear is complimentary.

Key considerations

Stand vs. no stand.

Travel bassinet with a stand: Some travel bassinets have a built-in frame or stand with legs. Those with stands are much like pod bassinets and are, therefore, better suited to frequent or long-term use. They allow airflow beneath the mattress and hold your baby at a convenient height for picking her up and putting her down.

• Travel bassinet without a stand: Some people are drawn to these because they're less expensive and fold down smaller than those with stands. They're great for occasional overnight use or for popping your baby down for 10 minutes, so you can keep her near you while you do the dishes or make a snack. However, you shouldn't use them for extended periods or as alternatives to standard bassinets .

Portability

Consider how easy your chosen travel bassinet is to take from one place to another. A highly portable model should be lightweight, fold up into a compact package, and have a carrying case included. The whole point of a travel bassinet is that it should be easy to travel with, so any models that aren't particularly portable should be avoided.

Ease of setup

Some travel bassinets simply fold in and out with the mattress and all the fabric that makes up the sleeping area in place — much like how you'd fold up a basic stroller. If ease of setup is your main concern, look for an easy-fold model, ideally one you can set up and fold away with just one hand, while you hold your baby in the other arm. Those with a slightly more complex setup are often more durable and include thicker mattresses and, therefore, suited to home use, too. Even those that are more tricky to set up, should be ready to use in less than a minute.

Mattresses are generally included with travel bassinets, although they usually aren't particularly thick or comfortable, because they're not designed for long-term use. The two main mattress-related factors to consider are the firmness of the mattress and how well it fits the bassinet. While a soft mattress sounds comfy, firm mattresses are much safer than soft mattresses for babies to sleep on. The mattress should also fit the bassinet exactly with no gaps around the edges; even small gaps can be an entrapment hazard.

Integrated sounds

Does your baby have trouble falling asleep? Some travel bassinets have integrated speakers that either play preloaded soothing sounds or that can connect to devices via Bluetooth to play music or any calming sounds of your choosing.

Washability

Ideally, travel bassinets should let you remove and machine wash the fabric parts in case of any accidents. If not, the material should be nonpermeable and easy to wipe clean.

Travel bassinets may have either full canopies, half canopies, or no canopies at all. Full canopies are ideal for outdoor use, and either full or half canopies can help block out light for daytime naps.

Height adjustability

If you choose a travel bassinet on a stand, it may be height adjustable. Adjusting the height can make it easier for you to pick up and put down your baby without stooping too much. Or you can set it at a convenient height so you can easily lift your baby out for feeds while you're in bed.

Travel bassinet prices

Inexpensive: Basic travel bassinets cost between $30 and $50 . At this price point, you'll generally only find bassinets without stands, which are useful for occasional nights away or daytime naps but not much else.

Mid-range: For $50 to $80 , you'll find some durable choices that are suitable for extended trips and more regular use but shouldn’t be used as your primary bassinet.

Expensive: High-end travel bassinets cost roughly $80 to $150 . These are rugged models with extra features and more comfortable mattresses. The majority can be used as home bassinets as well as for travel.

Check that your chosen travel bassinet has adequate ventilation. It should have mesh panels on the sides for airflow to help keep your baby from overheating.

Decide whether you need any storage space. Some travel bassinets have fabric storage shelves built in, which are useful for holding diapers, wipes, pacifiers, or other baby gear you might need easy access to.

Consider how often you'll use a travel bassinet. Will your baby be using her travel bassinet most days for naps or at the sitter's while you work, or is it just for a one-off trip away? The frequency of use may impact how much you're willing to spend.

Q. Can my baby sleep in a travel bassinet full time?

A. The majority of travel bassinets are only designed for use when your baby isn't able to sleep in her own regular crib or bassinet. They tend to have thin mattresses and may not be durable enough to stand up to daily use. That said, some high-end travel bassinets are of a high enough quality to use as your baby's main bassinet at home and on the go. Babies aren't in bassinets for long before progressing to full-size cribs, after all, so it can seem extravagant to buy a travel bassinet and a home bassinet.

Q. Will I need to buy bedding for my travel bassinet separately?

A. Some travel bassinets have sheets included, but often you must buy them separately. Bassinet sheets should be fitted and of the correct size for the mattress, otherwise they can be unsafe. It's better to go without a sheet than to use the wrong type or size. Any other bedding is unnecessary (and can be unsafe) for babies. Put an extra layer of clothing on your baby while she sleeps rather than using a blanket, and forgo pillows altogether.

Q. When will my baby grow out of a travel bassinet?

A. Travel bassinets usually have a maximum weight limit of between 15 and 25 pounds. Once your baby can roll over and sit up independently (which may be before she reaches the weight limit), she'll need to move from a travel bassinet to a travel cot.

Now that we’re considering baby #2, we’ve been looking for some of the best baby travel gear. Part of that search includes looking for a baby travel bassinet, now that we’re a full-time travel family.

There are several things we considered when determining the best bassinet for traveling with a baby.

The most crucial essentials we considered were safety, comfort, portability, ease of use, and extra features.

When looking for the best travel gear for babies, our priority is always safety.

We thoroughly research the products on our list, so each baby bassinet is designed to travel with a baby.

Comfort is a consideration for newborns, especially since they can’t have anything in their crib for the first year.

We tried to include as many bassinets as we could with mesh material, which is safer for babies, but give parents peace of mind.

Portability

When traveling with a baby it is important to only travel with the essentials.

We (moms) tend to overpack and overthink everything. It is not necessary to pack everything in the nursey when traveling with a baby .

We all know how important children being well-rested is to a happy family trip.  But how do you ensure a good night’s sleep away from home for your baby or toddler without your normal bedding and familiar surroundings?

Do you rely on your accommodation providing you with a baby travel bed or do you always prefer to take your own?

If it’s a single destination trip, we always check that one is provided at the accommodation to save on luggage space .

However, more commonly we are making multi-stop trips that often involve staying with family and friends who may not have the right baby gear on hand.  We find it so much easier and less strain on everyone if we travel with our own portable baby bed or travel bassinet.

Using our many years of experience traipsing the globe with infants (and learning the very hard way that there’s a huge difference between a pack n play and a proper, portable travel cot!) we have put together our top choices of modern, lightweight travel cots, bassinets and toddler beds that will make your travels easier.

Key features to look for in travel cots and infant travel beds

Portability – Undoubtedly the most important feature for our savvy family travellers.  We are already carting everything but the kitchen sink with kids let’s not make it any more hard work! Ideally, a cot that can fit inside your existing luggage and weighs under 15lbs.

Ease of assembling – The last thing you want when arriving late at night to your destinations is to be battling instructions and constructing a rocket ship.  Quick clear, easy folding mechanisms are a must.

The material – more specifically, can it be washed! When needs must, can you give is a quick sponge down or do parts easily come off to be washed?

Age range – Are you choosing something for a certain trip or stage of life or something that will last you for many years and children?  Newborn models might be ultra sleek and compact but only last you for a few months.  Larger models might be too much to carry for a baby but see you well into those toddler years.

Indoors or outdoors – Is this purchase for hotel and house stays only, or are you looking for something versatile that you can also take camping or out to the park with you as well? (We have a detailed review of our favourite baby beach tents here ).

Accessories – The key extra feature to check is does your cot comes with is a travel bag? If it is too large to fit in your suitcase and needs to be carried in as an extra item or gate-checked you will want something secure to transport the item in.  (Note many airlines allow a portable travel bassinet as an extra item to your usual weight allowance, but please always check this with your airline.)  Also, check whether a fitted sheet specific to the mattress is included or needs purchasing separately.

Cost – The sleek ultra-compact models don’t come cheap, but if you are a frequent traveller and plan on using for more than one child you can definitely see why the investment is worthwhile.

Update March 2024 – since we first published this list there have been several new contenders in this market – and some discontinued lines we’ve removed. There are many new “sleep pods” or outdoor tents for baby. As our kids have now outgrown this phase we are just waiting for some friends and family to give us their feedback this summer then we will update our review to include these newer products.

phil&teds Traveller Crib

If you love their strollers you’re going to love the phil&teds portable travel cot too.  Coming in a compact travel bag, it’s a full-size infant cot that will last you from newborn right through to the toddler years but at a fraction of the normal porta cot weight. 

The phil&teds Traveller has breathable mesh sides that can zip down and you can also get a UV cover, ideal if you are using outside as a playpen as well. The mattress is self-inflating but in our opinion, not do with being a little thicker still.

Pros – One of the most versatile models for sleep and play and super light at 6lbs

Cons – It is a little complex to build. Easy once you get the hang of it but needs some practice at home with interconnecting parts, not just one hand unfold.  And those feet really do stick out!

Lotus travel crib.

If you want ease of construction, this is the one you’ve been looking for! This beautiful product by Guava Family is only 11lbs and with side zip doors it doubles as a play cot too.

Pros – Easy of construction, this is one if you want to avoid those late-night battles, and it is rather sleek looking!

Cons – Weighs more than others (though they’ve reduced it from 13lbs to 11lbs. And the price tag.

TODEFULL 2 in 1 Portable Playard

I know we said no more Pack & Plays! But this one is different. New, lean and mean the TODEFULL has some design features seriously worth considering as a long term baby travel cot investment.

It folds down seriously small for a playard to just 36″ x 30″ (91cm x 76cm) and weighs 8lbs (3.63kg). A little bulkier than the two above which we’d also call full-sized travel cots, but the Ounuo can also be used as a bassinet from newborn. The “One button” collapse model is a major win!

Pros – multiuse bassinet and playard – ideal for camping and a safe play area when you’re away from home

Cons – a little bulky but not many

Brica Munchkin Fold n’ Go Travel Bassinet

This is a brilliant portable choice for newborns.  Contains a firm mattress with a fitted sheet with a sturdy outer frame.  Once they are sitting upright though you will need to move on.

Pros – At only 2.4lbs its a super lightweight option that fits inside your suitcase or even your carry-on.

Cons – Only suitable for those first few months so isn’t a longer-term travel solution

Kidco peapod.

If you’ve graduated from newborn, here’s our next best recommendation.  In a pop-up cocoon style, this ultralightweight model is super easy to fold out and use so no late-night battles.  The mesh sides provide ventilation and its a great model for indoors or outdoors.  Comes with a gate check bag.

If they have outgrown the standard model, there’s also the Kidco PeaPod Plus which can last up to around 5 years of age.

Pros – Ability to anchor it to the ground. Easy fold mechanism

Cons – Child cannot stand up

Baby delight snuggle nest.

A great option for when you want to co-sleep on the go, or for keeping a smaller infant snug and cosy on a larger bed or cot. With rigid sides and breathable netting but a firm waterproof mattress, it folds up beautifully compact for transportation.

Pros – Really light and easy to include with your luggage

Cons – only for newborn

You can also look into the Baby Delight Snuggle Next Traveler XL , it folds up into a larger backpack style and is suitable for larger infants.

Aila+Aiden Baby Nest

This is the best solution if you would like to place your infant safely on a bed without a full-sized cot.   Good also for tummy time on the floor or using as a play space as well for younger tots.   It is only 3.32lbs but you will need to fit it in with your luggage as no bag.

You can also get it in a larger size as your child grows.

Pros – Light and great for use on any flat surface.  Use at home too when you’re entering that transition phase.

Cons – Despite the lightweight, it’s quite bulky and will take up suitcase space, pricey.

Shrunks Toddler Travel Bed

Once they have outgrown the Dock-A-Tot style of bed, this is the next step up. An inflatable bed it folds down to a small bundle and weighs in at 6.6lbs, ideal for your toddler who might not quite be ready for a big-kid bed but still prefers more freedom than a travel cot. 

The inflatable rails keep them snug and secure (or you can purchase just the inflatable rails separately  -see below).   The outside blown up dimensions are 60″ x 37″or inside dimensions 47″x 24″.

Pros –  Super for use as an extra bed at home, camping, sleepovers and fits most standard cot sheets – our top pick for camping with toddlers

Extra infant sleeping items you will need

Don’t forget bedding to go with your cot! 

Although most the products above might come with a fitted sheet, you will most likely need your own blankets and infant sleep bags.

Infant sleep bags are a superb travel accessory.  If your child is already familiar with sleeping in one, they will find the travel transition much simpler.  Think about the climate where you are travelling as they come in different “tog” ratings. Somewhere warm and summery you will only want a 0.5 tog or ski and snow trip you will want a 2.5 tog or more!

Alternatives to needing a baby travel bed

I won’t deny it, of all the baby gear we’ve lugged around the world, travel bassinets and cots are amongst the most cumbersome items and I am glad to finally see an end to them!   

That said, they have over the years been essential.   We all know what a huge difference it can make to have your kids sleep soundly, particularly in an unfamiliar environment. But do you always need to bring a travel cot?

• If you are relying on your hotel or accommodation to provide the cot ALWAYS CALL TO CHECK AVAILABILITY.  Do they have the bedding as well or will you need to pack some sheets and blankets? Would they pass modern safety standards?
• For very young infants, are you taking a travel systems stroller that includes the flat bassinet? There is no harm in a young infant sleeping in this while you travel (our favourites over the years have been Mountain Buggy and City Select )
• Is there a baby equipment hire company at your destination that could help? Do make sure you read reviews and that they are able to deliver at your specified dates to either you or the property owner.
• Why not get a new cot delivered?  If it’s too cumbersome to take back home with you see if your hosts will then buy it off you or discount your stay for leaving them some handy new equipment – you never know!

K nowing you have a long haul or red-eye flight coming up can be daunting. Bringing an infant into that travel experience is even more complicated. When faced with extended flight times, it's rather unrealistic to assume you'll simply hold your infant comfortably for the duration. The prospect is stressful, which is when booking a baby bassinet can be a good option.

Instead of lugging a bulky car seat of your own onto a plane, many airlines offer options for guests traveling with infants to reserve a baby bassinet for long flights. Some airlines refer to these as skycots. While every airline's weight and size restrictions around baby bassinets are slightly different, there are some general guidelines to keep in mind.

In most cases, a baby bassinet on an aircraft is well suited for infants who are less than 6 months old. Many bassinets are designed with a 20-pound weight limit in place. They are also typically designed exclusively for infants who aren't able to sit up on their own.

When it comes to safety standards, baby bassinets are crafted with simple Velcro straps in place to keep an infant secure while flying. This allows the baby to sleep in intervals during the flight and for parents to get some rest as well. Bassinets are not designed to be used during taxi, take-off, turbulence, or landing. Reserve Your Bassinet With The Airline Early

The Federal Aviation Administration allows children under the age of 2 to fly on an accompanying adult's lap. However, this type of travel is not hailed as the safest way for young children to fly. Reserving a baby bassinet for a long flight can help travelers stay more closely aligned to the agency's recommendation that children fly secured in some fashion, much like adults.

There are a few essential things to keep in mind when you're ready to book your baby bassinet. The first is that airlines typically only have a limited number available per flight. The second is that unless you're booking premium class tickets where bassinets fit on side paneling, baby bassinets need to be secured to bulkhead seats. This makes it important to call the airline directly and tell them you're hoping to reserve a baby bassinet for your upcoming flight.

Reserving your seats and bassinet on the phone directly with an airline representative is a good way to make sure you fully understand the specific airline policies around baby bassinet use. It also ensures you book seats in a bassinet-friendly area of the plane. Do note that while the use of a bassinet may be offered for free, it's possible some airlines will charge an extra fee for reserving bulkhead seating.

Always Confirm After Booking

Some travelers prefer to book their flights through travel agents. If you happen to be an explorer who falls into this category, you can still easily reserve a baby bassinet. A few weeks and even a few days before you travel, double-check over the phone with an airline representative that the request is still firmly in place.
