Playa Las Tortugas  is an extensive natural preserve centered on a 10-mile beach alongside a former coconut plantation. You’ll also travel near a sea turtle conservation camp and find many birds. People often visit this area for birding, though they may also go boogie boarding, swimming, and surfing. 

Bring plenty of sunscreen and a chair to relax on the beach and look for birds as they fly by the beach. While some campgrounds are in the area, other sections don’t allow overnight stays. So, set up your viewing spot somewhere that won’t affect the birds, such as just off the forest line.

Note that this beach is located within two different time zones: Central and Mountain Time. This will explain why your watch or phone suddenly changes if synced to a data network. Like other outdoor environments, ensure you respect the area by cleaning up after yourself.

3. Mexico Kan Tours

Parque Urbano Kabah  is a popular outdoor destination in Cancun right in the city. This urban green space includes a nearly two-mile trail loop that takes you through the town and near various forested areas. As a result, you’ll typically see far more animals than you might expect while visiting. 

For example, birders have reported spotting birds as diverse as Green Herons, Turkey Vultures, Roadside Hawks, and Groove-billed Anis at this park. You must bring binoculars if you plan on birding because most species will stay far away from the paved path whenever possible.

This park also includes a stroller- and wheelchair-friendly design with a paved path perfect for walking and running. It’s a good option for anyone who wants to spot great bird species in Cancun but doesn’t want to travel far outside the city to find them. 

5. Birding Cancun

Birding Cancun  is a day trip that includes a private tour throughout the jungle with a birding expert. You’ll hike to various secluded regional areas and get personal transportation from your hotel. Bottled water, snacks, soda, and other amenities are provided during your trip.

This adventure is one of the least expensive options on this list and includes many times. You can book whenever you want, as long as you have enough people for the trip. Often, the bird guide can help you find people if you’re interested in this trip and have no one else coming with you.

Ta’Akbil Ja  is a bit of a hidden treasure in the Cancun area because it’s an out-of-the-way destination that isn’t as widely explored as others. Nevertheless, you’ll find many caves and wildlife areas that make this a fun place to visit, though you might want to hire a tour guide to ensure you get through the site safely. 

Many people rappel deep into the caves around this area, while others bike and set up their tripods not far from the forests. Seeing some bird species here might be trickier if you don’t have experience, so make sure you feel comfortable spotting birds before coming to this destination.

Note that many of the caves in this area are not monitored and could be dangerous to explore if you have no experience with spelunking. As a result, it’s best to stay outside them and watch for cave birds or other animals. Often, there are clear areas near each cave where you can set up your gear.

Birding at Cancun

I have been going to Cancun for 30 years. I have attempted to go birding for maybe the last ten years. The concierge and travel agents have always given me the 1000 meter stare. This year I found, through Fat Birder, a birding trip conducted by ECOCOLORS. I booked before we traveled. This trip was fantastic. It was just my son and me. Luis was our guide. He took us into the jungle near Porto Moralas. Luis spoke excellent english and knew the english names for the birds. We logged 49 species of which five would be birds I see in the states, We had close-up views of PARROTS, PARAKEETS, MOTMOTS, and TOUCANS. We had 3 species of hummingbirds, 5 orioles, 5 woodpeckers and all 3 jays. The trip is listed on the Thomas More schedule at the Royal Resorts, but it is at the bottom of the list and not pushed by them. I routinely lead birding walks in Virginia and this one puts me to shame. I certainly intend to book this walk on my next trip to Cancun.

Simply fantastic. I will hope to do it again, between may to september but it is also the stormy season. Excellent guide, well driven. An added adventure on our return journey was being pelted by sharp rain drops. We all loved it.

We stayed at Secrets Silversands in Riviera Maya, and signed up for the Swim with the Whale Sharks tour through our resort. Simply put, this was the best decision I have ever made in my life. Every year from May to September, Whale Sharks congregate in an area by Isla Mujeres. Luckily, we were there in late May 2013 to experience this! The bus picked us up right on time, and we stopped at a couple other resorts on the way to pick up more people. Once we got the the marina, the rest of the crews were there and had snacks and beverages waiting for us, which was nice. We were also told to take Dramamine if we had any. I DO NOT get seasick, but I took some anyway just so I was sure I would not ruin this once in a lifetime trip! The boat ride out was EXTREMELY choppy, and took about 1.5 hours, so if you think you MAY get sick, TAKE THE PILLS! The day we chose to go, there was a storm at sea so it was rougher and longer than usual, but that is fine by me. Once we got out to the spot, there were about 10 to 15 other boats around, but there was plenty of space for everyone. Immediately upon arriving, you could look out across the water and see the whale sharks' dorsal and tail fins sticking out of the water, and even catch a mouth here and there! We could also see giant manta rays from the surface as well. So already, this was awesome! Now the good part, they send you out in groups of 2 or 3 with a guide, and you get to snorkel with these amazing animals. I have always had an affinity with sharks, so to me, this is quite possibly the most amazing thing I have ever had the chance to do. Well I was not disappointed. I GOT TO SNORKEL WITH DOZENS OF WHALE SHARKS THAT WERE ANYWHERE FROM 15 TO 40 FEET LONG! There were also a couple of giant manta rays, and smaller eagle-ray type rays (not sure what kind, they resembled eagle rays without the spots). We went out 3 different times before having to head in due to the weather. I simply cannot put into words how amazing that swim was. Seeing these magnificent, gentle creatures in their natural habitat up close is a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget! IF YOU COME TO MEXICO, DO THIS TRIP! From there, they take you to Isla Mujeres and drop anchor just off a beach, and let you jump in to swim/float around and have lunch. They prepared a fresh shrimp salad, and sandwiches, both were very good. Honestly I could have eaten a bowl of sand and loved it because of how happy I was after seeing the sharks! The staff on our boat was great, the staff we met on land were great, and everyone else was great. So to EcoColors Tours, thanks for providing me with a once in a lifetime experience that I dream about every night! And thanks Mexico for having a plankton bloom that the whale sharks love! Also thanks to my girl for taking me here for my birthday!

When I called to book this trip, the rep actually suggested the day after I wanted because the forecast called for rough water. However, I was flying out that day so it was then or never, but i appreciated the rep's recommendation. If you're prone to motion sickness I'd really think twice about this one. The boats are not large so you feel every wave you hit. Of the 10 passengers in my tour, 7 of them got sick, and of those 7, 3 people got really really sick. Thankfully I was totally fine, but it did cut the trip short, which is disappointing for the amount of money you pay. The pick-up was very prompt, actually early. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and polite. Our guide gave us the basics about whale sharks and how the tour would work. Staff for the actual tour consisted of 1 guide and 2 crewmen. It took awhile to get to the area and then we basically drove around looking for the whale sharks. Another boat radioed that they had found them, so mercifully we weren't driving around for too long. The staff took us out in groups of 2-3 and we got to swim with the 20-odd whale sharks in the area. Also saw a manta ray. It was very cool. As I said, because the majority of our boat was ill, we weren't there for as long as I would have liked. After that we rode to Isla Mujeres for lunch (shrimp ceviche...it was tasty) and got to swim a bit there before heading back to the dock. Was back at the resort by like 2.30p. I had a good time, but I do wish that there hadn't been so many seasick people so we could have stayed out there longer, but what can you do...I'd do it again.

I considered this trip to be well worth it. The staff was excellent and informative, the pickup and drop off were prompt, and the lunch and snacks weren't bad. However, there are a couple of things I wish I had known before I went. The first is that you will probably be on a small boat in the middle of the ocean for at least 5-6 hours. We had some friends go out the following day who were out there for 8 hours. This is because they need to find the whale sharks before you can swim with them (makes sense). However, they do no know where they are before they go out. All of the whale shark boats go out, look for them, then swarm on them once they are found. If you get sea sick...just know you will most likely get pretty ill during this search because the boat moves slowly. The second thing is wear a hat with a string to tighten to your neck. My scalp got fried since I couldn't wear a ball cap while the boat was traveling quickly to and from the sharks (which is pretty fun actually). The third is wear stronger sun screen than you normally do and re-apply often. The salt spray from the moving boat will remove it quickly, and the biodegradable stuff they say you need to bring doesn't seem to have the lasting power of the other stuff I had while I was down there. I got a little too much sun as the result. Again, I would consider this trip well worth it, but I don't get severely sea sick. We had some other friends of ours who were pretty miserable by the time we got back due to this. It seems like a lot of time before you see the sharks, but once you jump in with them, you will not regret the trip.

This was my second trip with Eco Tours. The first Whale shark trip was great! I decided to take some friends for the experience. We took this Whale shark tour on the very first day of the season last year. We were a party of (4) and really looking forward to a great day. Eco tours guarantees that you will see a whale shark or your money back. Well because of this offer, they would not give up the tour and turn around. The Captain insisted that we continue looking.The deck hand never offered us water, we had absolutely no shade, they never stopped the boat to see if we wanted to go into our bags for more sunscreen, after 4 hours we had to beg to have the boat stopped so we could jump in the water because we were suffering from heat stroke. No lunch was served as promised. So after 6 hours of being on the water and driving completely around another island.....seriously thought the Captain was taking us to Cuba, that's how long we were on the water doing absolutely nothing......and all they did was refund us our money...no apology. So my recommendation to all reading this is.... if they haven't already seen Whale sharks on a previous trip, then they aren't out there yet and I wouldn't book to do the tour. It was miserable because of no shade.....though I am sure there are other companies that the boat provides shade and offer water and lunch for its customers. If I owned the company, I would have offered us to try again the following year at no charge just to show how good the company can be because honestly, the trip was terrible.
