Being a poetry and language enthusiast, as well as a musician myself, John Cooper Clarke is an incredibly talented and original musician who I admire entirely. It’s very hard to come across these days performance poets, and his fresh punk poetry sound captivates me to this day. His collaborations with musicians to back his music have ranged from huge names such as Steve Hopkins, right through to Paul Burgess, and each time, he creates incredible and moving music.

I was lucky enough to see Cooper Clarke perform solo and also supporting Inspiral Carpets recently in Manchester. He opened his show with Grimmix!, the track that entered the UK top 40 back in ’79, and he even got everyone to join in with his lyrics. His voice is perfect for the recitals, and his poignant construction of verses and rhyme schemes alongside the music of his supporters is magical, and something that just doesn’t get done enough.

He was great at interacting with the audience, and got everyone chanting a rhythm, whilst he recited and almost punky rap over the top of the crowd. He’s incredibly talented, and I really do hope he keeps performing in years to come.

What a job these local promoters are doing! Tonight they brought 3 excellent poets to Shrewsbury, the legend that is Dr John Cooper Clark with support from Toria Garbett and Clare Ferguson Walker. Gritty, northern, pithy, provocative poetry delivered with grit and verve. Long live independent venues and promoters! Check out chairhousepresents!

Very good-John Cooper Clarke was on form and did some of his new poems as well as some old favourites. A screen projector showing him in close up would have helped a lot-for those of us in the gallery he was a bit of a speck in the distance. He really does look more and more like Max Wall as he gets older.

Dr John Cooper Clarke - Luckiest Guy Alive Tour

john cooper clarke tour london

FINAL CURTAIN CALL This show is no longer running.

Britain’s best loved poet Dr John Cooper Clarke is heading to the London Palladium on Sat 24 November 2018. The show is a sensational showcase of spoken word –a chance to see John perform material both classic and brand new as he delves into his vast back catalogue, as well as his prolific collection of new work, all read from his trademark battered notebooks, delivered in John’s legendary, rapid fire style and iconic Salford drawl. Combine this John’s hilarious observations, gags and off the wall chat and it adds up to the chance to see a living legend at the top of his game.

As we enter 2018, John Cooper Clarke is as relevant and vibrant as ever, and his influence just as visible on pop culture. His influence can also be heard in the satirical and keen social observations of artists such as Plan B and the Arctic Monkeys. Alex Turner, frontman of the Artic Monkeys cites him as a huge inspiration and this was highlighted by the band’s cover of JCC’s I Wanna Be Yours on their critically acclaimed fifth studio album ‘AM’. UK rapper Plan B featured John’s poetry in his directorial film debut ‘Ill Manors’  – their duet Pity The Plight appears in the movie and on the films hit soundtrack.

These collaborations mean that John has been involved in 2 global number 1 albums in the last few years.

With support from Geoffrey Allerton, Mike Garry, Luke Wright, Toria Garbutt and Clare Ferguson-Walker.

As well as his regular TV appearances on the likes of Have I Got News For You, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Would I Lie To You and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, John also host 6 Music shows and his own BBC Radio 4 Show “John Cooper Clarke Live at the BBC”.

Literary phenomenon John Cooper Clarke is a British cult hero. Known as the ‘Godfather of Punk Poetry' and the original people’s poet, John’s cultural influence spans literature, music and fashion.

Listen Ahead! Turn Up The Volume! is The Stables' monthly podcast series. You can listen to Dr  John Cooper Clarke  talking about his life and career - including a world exclusive reading - on our March episode.  Just follow this link to access.

From creating some of the most iconic poetry of the modern era, including the world's most popular wedding poem  I Wanna Be Yours (recently celebrating over a billion streams in its incarnation as a hit record by the Arctic Monkeys) to sharing his life story through his 120k selling memoir of the same name. John is referenced as a major influence not just by the Arctic Monkeys but also by artists across the globe… As well as musicians like Alex Turner, The Sleaford Mods and Plan B, his legendary number  Evidently Chickentow  plays out the penultimate episode of The Sopranos . Watching John Cooper Clarke perform is an opportunity to see a living legend at the top of his game.

Doctor John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s. Captivating audiences with his unique poetry and delivery style, he clawed his way up from working mens clubs and cabaret venues in his native Salford and Manchester, to become one of the most prolific figures in punk.

John’s early live shows were renowned occasions, and headline gigs were supported by many soon-to-be superstars including Joy Division, New Order and Duran Duran , as well as playing as special guest on shows by the Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks and The Clash .

After the release of his seminal album on CBS “ Snap, Crackle and Bop” where John’s poems were put to music by the legendary music producer Martin Hannett, he was firmly established as one of the most important artists of the Punk era. His recorded album was followed by the release of his first collection 10 Years in an Open Necked Shirt . The book is one of the best-selling poetry anthologies ever in the UK, Canada and Australia.

As relevant and vibrant as ever, John Cooper Clarke’s influence is just as visible in contemporary pop culture, with his trademark ‘look’ resonating with fashion-conscious individuals across all demographics and his poetry features in the UK national curriculum syllabus. Having had a groundbreaking effect on modern music, his influence can be heard within the social observations of the Arctic Monkeys, amongst many others.

John's 2018 poetry collection The Luckiest Guy Alive featured 30 new poems and his long-awaited 2020 autobiography I Wanna Be Yours is a groundbreaking piece of literature and a “riveting memoir”.

His sense of humor resounds throughout his career, and his latest live show is a mix of classic verse, new material, hilarious ponderings on modern life, good honest gags, riffs and chat.

In 2024 John will be celebrating his 75th birthday with a new live  tour of the UK’s major cities including a show at the London Palladium as well as at the Lowry Theatre in his native Salford. It’s a chance to see one of the world’s most important and entertaining spoken word artists at his bold and brilliant best.

John Cooper Clarke – The Bard of Salford – 2024 Tour

words Ed Charlesworth

jcc tour

The punk poet. The Bard of Salford. The name behind the hairstyle.

Like many artistically inclined, combat-boot clad Northerners my age, growing up I was vaguely aware of these terms, and of the lanky figure lurking just within the periphery of British pop culture.

Gangly beneath a skinny suit, a pair of plastic shades and a shock of black hair, the figure was something of a spectre to me, a piece of Northern culture I understood was present, but that I didn’t have the faculties to fully distinguish from the shadows, at least not yet.

Then, in September 2013, as I clumsily manoeuvred my way through the first year of high school, Arctic Monkeys released their massively acclaimed, enormously successful fifth studio album, ‘AM’.

Ever the contrarian, I refused to buy into the hype, ignoring the album the best I could, though, because of my dad’s love for the record, this proved challenging.

Eventually, several years down the line, after exerting far too much effort denouncing ‘AM’ for being “overplayed”, I found myself being forced to finally pay it heed.

Flying down the M62 in my close-friend Amelia’s battered car, I had nowhere to escape to when she turned up the stereo, plugged in the aux and played, much to my grievance, a track from ‘AM’ she said was “based off an old poem”.

Puffing copious clouds from my lips, contorted in a curmudgeonly half-scowl around a cigarette, I settled back, finally giving in to the incessant squawking of that cultural albatross of mine.

The moody sway of ‘I Wanna Be Yours’ began, Alex Turner’s Northern croon yearning through the smoke to be someone’s vacuum cleaner, to be their Ford Cortina. The grimace fell from my face.

I found myself clinging to each turn of phrase, each mundane, dreary object Turner sang about being lifted and transfigured into something beautiful through rhyme, the highest peaks of romance being traversed and displayed in the relationship between an electric meter and an electric heater.

It was here, just after the final synth-heavy drone of the track, that I heard the name of the poet responsible for imbuing such majesty into such ordinary words.

John Cooper Clarke.

And suddenly, floating forward from the depths of my memory, came images of that tall, looming figure, clad head to toe in black.

That ever present spectre who had for so long existed on the periphery of my knowledge, who had been hovering just beyond the light of my understanding since childhood, was finally given identity.

Delving into his work, I explored his poetry in all it’s acerbic glory, feasting upon each delightfully familiar colloquialism with unrestrained gluttony.

In what I read, I could see shades of myself I thought had been reserved for frail Victorian authors, now long past their sell by date and settled in the ground. In his success, his reputation as a counter cultural icon, I drew comfort from the knowledge that a path did exist for wordy, outspoken outsiders, no matter how strange.

And then, having consumed the entirety of JCC’s online collection, I leapt to the work of other punk-rock affiliates, finding in fellow poets like Patti Smith a source of inspiration rarely surpassed in its potency.

John Cooper Clarke is a counterculture icon like no other, a lightning rod for outsiders and a truly legendary pen. Rightly being recognised for his contribution to the arts, the Bard has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Salford, been made an Honorary Freeman of the City of Salford and is consistently being heralded as a major source of inspiration by many artists.

In my experience though, it’s not the prestige of JCC’s achievements that make him such a compelling and beloved individual, but rather his existence just outside of the mainstream.

His work isn’t rammed down your throat by the media or smushed in the pages of an outdated poetry anthology you’re forced to study at school, it’s reserved for those ‘in the know’, you’ll find it when you need to, and, when you do, you’ll understand.
