Blue Moon originated in Denver in 1995, with the first brew of Belgian-Style Wheat ale taking place in the SandLot Brewery at Coors Field. Belgian White provided a refreshingly creative take on the classic Belgian Wit, and has since been the inspiration for us to continue to push creative boundaries ever since.

Visiting the Blue Moon Brewery in Denver

In the history of American beer, there are certain brands that have shaped the modern craft beer scene, and broadened beer categories. These beers are interesting, but still approachable, and include imports like Guinness Draught, as well as locally brewed classics like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and Blue Moon Belgian White . All three are easy to find, and affordable, and in the case of Blue Moon it represented something unprecedented in American beer when it was introduced in the mid-nineties. Blue Moon began life at the Sandlot Brewery at Coors Field as a beer modeled after the wheat beers from Belgium and the Netherlands that were brewed with coriander and the zest of bitter oranges. Instead of the traditional Curacao oranges however, head brewer Keith Villa opted to use Valencia Oranges since he believed them to be slightly sweeter, and better suited to the American palette. Originally called Bellyslide Wit, a chance remark that a beer this good is brewed “once in a blue moon” lead to a name change, and a production shift to the Coors Brewery at nearby Golden, Colorado. At the Coors Brewery, the beer was produced on a larger scale, and distributed across the country. Bright orange and cloudy, with notes of dried citrus and spice, Blue Moon was unlike anything that American beer drinkers were accustomed to at the time. Competitors introduced their own Belgian-style beers, but Blue Moon stayed dominant and remained the definitive example of this beer style.

Over two decades later, craft beer culture went through significant changes, with brands no longer being seen the same way that they were years ago. The Coors company recognized a need to return Blue Moon to its roots as a beer first made in small batches in a brewpub based in a baseball stadium. This lead to the creation of Blue Moon RiNo in 2016. RiNo refers to the River North Arts District, an area in Denver known for art galleries, architecture firms, and other interesting attractions. In some ways, the development of RiNo in Denver parallels the history of Wynwood in Miami; both are former industrial districts revitalized by art and now the hubs of craft beer in their respective cities. Wynwood is known for beer companies like J. Wakefield Brewing, Veza Sur , and more. In RiNo, there are taprooms for popular Colorado craft beer companies like Great Divide Brewing, Left Hand Brewing , and Odell Brewing. These brands are all highly regarded among beer drinkers, but none are as well known as Blue Moon, which is distributed across the world.

A visit to Blue Moon RiNo should ideally begin with their iconic wheat beer served with the trademark orange slice garnish. In the early history of this beer, bars began serving it during the summertime with a slice of lemon or lime on the rim, similar to how Mexican lagers like Corona are typically served. The Blue Moon marketing team suggested that slices of Valencia oranges be used instead, since this complemented the notes of citrus already present in the beer.

Other insights into the history of the brand are shared during Blue Moon RiNo brewery tours that are done almost everyday. Much of this history is told with the aid of posters and old labels for historic bottlings that adorn the hallways. The relevance of Blue Moon RiNo within the larger brand is also explained. New beers are dreamed up and brewed here for the first time. Based on feedback from drinkers, the beer is then brewed in bigger batches at the Coors Brewery in Golden, Colorado and distributed across the state, and eventually the rest of the country.

Some of the most popular products to emerge from Blue Moon RiNo include Blue Moon Pacific Apricot Wheat, and Blue Moon Summer Honey Wheat. Both of these are seasonally brewed, and included in mixed twelve packs. The most successful of these seasonal beers has been Blue Moon Mango Wheat, which started as a summer beer but is now made throughout the year.

Several expansions to the Blue Moon line were also developed at River North. These include Blue Moon LightSky, which is a low calorie beer with less than four grams of carbs. There is also Moon Haze, a juicy pale ale brewed in collaboration with Terrapin Brewing Company in Maine. Moon Haze is brewed with entire oranges, while Light Sky is brewed with tangerine peel, so both remain familiar for Blue Moon drinkers accustomed to dominant orange notes while still being entirely dissimilar in other regards. LightSky is reminiscent of club soda with a splash of Angostura Orange Bitters. Moon Haze has notes of tangy tangerine juice, grapefruit zest, and the slightest hint of candied orange peel. The added oranges perfectly compliment the hops blend, which includes varieties chosen for distinct tropical citrus notes.

A broad range of other beers on tap incorporate citrus in interesting ways. Calamansi Gose is a warm fermented wheat beer in a style typically made with wild strains of yeast leading to a sour, vinegar-like taste. The sourness is further accentuated with the addition of a tart citrus fruit known as Calamansi, or Philippine lime. Just like Blue Moon Belgian White, this is a wheat beer with citrus, but it manages to be completely different, and almost like a tart reimagining of the classic Blue Moon first brewed at the Sandlot Brewery. In Orange Blossom Honey Kolsch, subtle citrus notes interact with light hints of clove and cinnamon in a beer with a character reminiscent of a spiced cookie. Blue Moon Blood Orange Pale Ale is similar, but brighter and more fruit forward. Their most hop forward beer is Tangerillo Juicy IPA, an India Pale Ale dry hopped with tangerines and pomelos leading to intense notes of candied grapefruit peel, lemongrass, and pine resin.

There are also several experimental beers that are not on tap, and only available to visitors who take a tour of Blue Moon RiNo followed by a private tasting. These include barley wines aged in Bourbon barrels, lagers brewed with lemon peels, and more. The most successful of these will be brewed again in larger batches, and may one day be bottled and sold across the country. Just like the original Blue Moon first brewed at the Sandlot Brewery in 1995 changed American craft beer, beer made at Blue Moon RiNo may one day shape the future of American beer.

We arrived late around 7:45, so we only had 1:15 minutes to try as much as possible. We had two separate flights but both agreed that the “Rose” definitely a winner. We later had buffalo wings with blue cheese along with the fig pizza and... loaded nachos. Everything was on point. This place was a VIBE! More

Blue Moon has a wide selection of beers and good food. We enjoyed the Czech Pilsner, cranberry lavender blonde, Baltic porter and burgers with seasoned garlic fries. Service was excellent. There is plenty of seating, and it’s a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

We wanted to do at least one touristy thing while on our tour of South Denver for potential houses. Blue Moon is the brand my husband orders without fail so being able to tour/dine/sample the beers at the brewery was #1 on our list. We... had a later reservation but they seated us when we arrived no problem & in one of those cool barrel booths to boot. Hubby got a flight & I just tried one 10 oz pour. We could see ourselves coming back to try the seasonal flavors or other flavors we didn't get to sample if we moved to CO. The food was surprisingly really good since I thought it would just be an afterthought against the beer. My husband's pulled pork sandwich had a really tasty bbq sauce & we loved my pulled pork tacos & ahi tostadas. It was also nice to be able to still take the tour (even if it is self guided) with the covid restrictions. Add the friendly staff & this makes for a fun place you have to check off your brewery bucket list! More

A great variety of good beer saved Blue Moon from getting a rating of 2 or even 1. Location is a bit out of the way and the RiNo district isn’t much to look at yet. Great facility and nice atmosphere but the food needs... work. Portions are small and prices are a bit high considering. Salad was initially delivered without dressing and then the dressing was oddly sweet. The spicy pickle burger was ordered medium well and even had the medium well marker but was clearly medium rare if not rare with marginal flavor. Double fried fries are really good. Fundita was just ok. I would recommend coming for beers and getting some fries or apps to soak things up- I wouldn’t waste time on the regular menu. Price and value are on the poor side given the above. 4 oz tasting pours are $3.50 making a 16oz beer $14 if you build a flight. More

An absolutely beautiful building - with cool seating options. We were there at about 1:45 pm on a Tuesday and decided just to have a small pour, since happy hour started at 2. At 2 we ordered 2 pints plus the pork green chili nachos... and were very disappointed. Served so quickly, we wondered if it had been premade - and it was not hot. The pork green chili was more thin soup than anything else. We think they used cheez whiz rather than real cheese. Pass… Service was super nice. More

I was really excited to go to the Blue Moon Brewery while visiting Denver. Blue Moon is one of my favorite micro turned macro-brews. Well this is more like going to a BJ's without the option of a Pizookie. It is cool because you get... to taste Blue Moon's test beers, but that is about it. They did not have a tour offered, it is just a brew-pub. The food was of super high quality, but the taste was absent. Stopped here for a flight and although it was a bit pricy the beers were good and we got to try something different from what you can find in stores. The murals on the walls were pretty cool. It was very busy and although we... only wanted a flight they had to seat us a table and I think the server was a bit annoyed at this but we made it clear from the start a flight was our intention. We were going to a concert at the Denver Coliseum and decided to have dinner at Blue Moon before the concert. We chose this restaurant because of the reviews. Loved the industrial decor. Spencer, our server, was very friendly and helpful with placing our order... and keeping our drinks refilled. The food was delicious. We ordered the queso fundido and the pulled pork sandwich with fries and coleslaw. Very pleased with everything. We'll definitely add Blue Moon to our list of Denver favorites. More

If you love Blue Moon beer then you must stop here! We flew into Denver and this was our first stop. We sat at the bar and the bartender let us try a couple of different beers before deciding on one. Me husband and I... split a burger and I love a place that will split your entree for you. It was a great first stop to our weekend! More

Monday-Thursday Happy Hour starts at 3. But we were earlier and had some yummy pours and a cauliflower crust fig pizza. That was light yet salty and sweet. Paired well with a stout and sour. Excellent service. Cool atmosphere.

Loved it here! A random person we had met the day before mentioned this place and my husband LOVES Blue Moon so we had to go. I don’t drink beer, but we ate lunch here and the food was amazing. My husband loved the unique... selection of beers. This was one of the best parts of our vacation to CO! More

Stopped in for lunch. The food was really good. I enjoyed the hot chicken sandwich. We ordered a couple beers which were good. The building is really cool with neat seating inside and out. The weather was nice so we sat outside and it was... amazing. The waitress was super helpful and polite. Overall a great experience. More

This was an amazing experience. Our waitress helped us choose the beers for our flight and they were amazing! Food came fast and was delicious. The atmosphere is bright and fun. A must go if you are a Blue Moon fan or just want some... brewery fun! More

For and early after noon snack and dinner and a couple of beers. Enough about the heerst. They are amazing. The food though. To die for, we started with delicious taco’s carnitas that went on to the mains. Awesome bison burger and great power salad.... And the dressing was out of this world. They offer free wi-fi, not that fast butt good enough. They offer a good dining experience. You can sit at the bar or in a private seat or the main dining area. Or outside if you wish. More

I’m a big craft beer guy, but this didn’t really have the commercialization I was expecting so that was good. Very well done brewery with lots of space. Lots of beers to choose from aside from their national ones (this is their R&D brewery). Food... was good, but a little pricey. It was actually snowing when we were there, but a little surprised they didn’t have a larger outdoor area. More

The River North Arts District of Denver, Colorado, (fondly known as “RiNo” by locals), is a hub of creativity with trendy art galleries, colourful murals, quirky bars and festivals. We are happy to call RiNo home for Blue Moon and look forward to welcoming you in our doors.

Our brewery story started at Denver's baseball Stadium, Coors Field in 1995. It was here where our Belgian White Belgian-Style Wheat Ale was born. The Sandlot brewery, located behind the Right Field Stands at the Stadium continued brewing artfully crafted beers for more than 20 years gaining fans across Denver and the world.

In the Summer of 2016 we brought our same creativity and passion for beer to our new state-of-the-art brewery and restaurant in Denver's artistic RiNo District. Since them we've been doing what we do best by putting our passion into practice and brewing artfully crafted beers. Today Blue Moon is brewed at the RiNo Brewery in Denver and other locations throughout the world.

River north art district (RiNo)

The RiNo District in Denver is a hub of creativity with trendy art galleries, colourful murals, quirky bars and festivals. The RiNo District is a former industrial hub and formed part of the 4 historic neighbourhoods including Cole, Five Points, Elryia/Swansea and GlobeVille. The area was once home to the foundries and industrial workshops that drove economic success in Denver but as industry moved away from the city in the 80s and 90s many warehouses became vacant. Slowly artists began to populate the derelict warehouses and the area became a fertile ground for art, artists and creatives which transformed the area.

Blue Moon originated in Denver in 1995, with the first brew of Bellyslide Wit at The Sandlot Brewery at Coors Field. That creative take on classic Belgian Wit style has been the inspiration to push creative boundaries ever since.
