Did you know

  • Trivia The Starfleet vessels seen in the first season, including the Discovery, the Shenzou and the redesigned Enterprise, were all designed by production artist John Eaves. Eaves' work with Star Trek spans three decades. Probably his most notable contribution was the design of the Enterprise-E for Star Trek: First Contact (1996) .
  • Goofs With Michael being the adoptive sister of Spock, the series has many flashbacks to their childhood and upbringing on Vulcan. Spock's Vulcan half-brother, Sybok, does not appear nor is mention during these scenes. In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) , Spock says that he and Sybok grew up together. However, since it's never stated when Sybok joined Sarek's home - only that he did so following his mother's death - or when he was exiled from the family, it's not impossible Sybok moved in after Burnham, and left before she graduated (the two extremes of the flashbacks). Also, since Sybok was never mentioned before Star Trek V, it seems reasonable the family never spoke of him again after his estrangement.

Screen Rant

Who plays saru in star trek: discovery doug jones’ incredible career explained.

As one of the most popular characters of Star Trek: Discovery, Doug Jones' Captain Saru has left his mark on the Star Trek franchise.

  • Doug Jones' portrayal of Captain Saru in Star Trek: Discovery has made the character one of the most interesting and likable in the franchise's current era.
  • As a Kelpien, Saru has unique abilities and was the first of his kind to leave his planet and serve in Starfleet.
  • Doug Jones has had a successful career playing aliens and monsters, working with renowned director Guillermo del Toro and appearing in films like The Shape of Water.

As one of the most popular characters on Star Trek: Discovery , Doug Jones' Captain Saru has left his mark on the Star Trek franchise. Introduced in the pilot episode of Discovery , Saru is a member of the Kelpien species and the first of his kind to leave his planet Kaminar. Over the course of Discovery , Saru has grown into an accomplished and well-respected Starfleet Captain. Largely thanks to Doug Jones' captivating performance, Saru remains one of the most interesting and likable characters of the current era of Star Trek .

As an actor, Doug Jones is used to performing under heavy makeup and prosthetics, as he has portrayed many aliens and monstrous creatures throughout his career. In an interview with StarTrek.com , Jones revealed that he did not even have to audition for the role of Saru. The creative team behind Star Trek: Discovery approached him with an offer, and as a Trek fan, Jones jumped at the chance to be part of the franchise. Unfortunately, Discovery's upcoming season 5 will be its last, but Doug Jones could still pop up as Saru in another Star Trek project.

Doug Jones Plays Saru In Star Trek: Discovery

As a Kelpien, Saru has heightened senses and a profound sense of empathy. While on his home planet of Kaminar, Saru built a communications device and made contact with Starfleet Lieutenant Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh), who offered Saru the chance to leave Kaminar and explore the stars. Believing he would never be able to return, Saru became the first Kelpien to leave Kaminar, and the first Kelpien to serve in Starfleet . Saru would go on to serve on the USS Shenzhou under the command of Captain Georgiou before transferring to the Discovery and becoming First Officer under Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs).

At the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Saru and the rest of the crew traveled into the far future and Saru became Captain of the Discovery soon after. He was also able to reconnect with the Kelpiens of the 32nd century and encouraged them to join and assist the United Federation of Planets. In his time on the Discovery , Saru has become close personal friends with Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and he backed her promotion to Captain of the Discovery. Saru then served as Burnham's First Officer after his return from Kaminar in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. While aiding with negotiations between the planet Ni'Var (formerly Vulcan) Saru and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) began a romantic relationship.

Doug Jones’ Incredible Career Explained

Doug Jones' acting career began in the late 1980s, but his first major role came in 1993 when he portrayed Billy Butcherson in Disney's Hocus Pocus . Jones reprised this role for the sequel Hocus Pocus 2 in 2022. Doug would go on to appear in many television shows throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, often using his skills as a contortionist. He appeared in three episodes of the 1998 remake of The Outer Limits as various aliens and as the Lead Gentleman in the iconic Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode, "Hush."

Doug Jones has worked with director Guillermo del Toro on several occasions. He played the amphibious man Abe Sapien in 2004's Hellboy and 2008's Hellboy II: The Golden Army alongside Ron Perlman. Jones also starred as Cesare in David Lee Fisher's 2005 remake of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and as Fauno and the Pale Man in del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. He appeared as the Silver Surfer in the 2007 film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer , although Lawrence Fishburne provided the character's voice.

Doug Jones appeared in three seasons of Falling Skies as Cochise and in six episodes of del Toro's The Strain . Jones has also appeared as various monsters in several horror films including The Bye Bye Man in 2017. Jones portrayed the Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water , which won four Academy Awards in 2018, including Best Picture and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro. Although his time as Saru on Star Trek: Discovery is ending, the talented and prolific Doug Jones currently appears as vampire royal Baron Afanas on FX comedy What We Do in the Shadows.

'Star Trek: Discovery': Ian Alexander on Significance of Playing Franchise's First Trans Character (Exclusive)

Ian Alexander and Star Trek: Discovery

The actor talks to ET about being introduced as Gray and how 'The OA' has changed his life.

Star Trek: Discovery   introduced transgender actor Ian Alexander as Gray, the franchise's first-ever trans character, in the latest episode of the CBS All Access series. The 19-year-old, who uses the pronouns he/him or they/them, came into the fold after executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise saw his work on Netflix's short-lived series,  The OA , where Alexander played Buck Vu. Originally auditioning for the role of Adira, the franchise's first non-binary character that went to newcomer Blu del Barrio , Kurtzman and Paradise were so impressed by his take that they molded Gray specifically for Alexander.

"Playing Gray really has reassured a lot of my own self-confidence, and really boosted that belief and faith that I have in myself. Because I think I do tend to feel a lot of imposter syndrome," Alexander tells ET. "I think that's sort of the conundrum of a lot of other trans actors -- and just anyone in general experiences this to some extent. But especially trans actors because there are so few opportunities for us that when we finally do get those opportunities, it feels kind of alienating. It feels like we shouldn't be there because it feels sort of unexpected that we are finally getting included in ways that we weren't before."

He adds, "For pretty much the entire history of the film industry, trans people have been sort of a taboo topic or something that was presented as negative. So I think I really have grown a lot since joining Star Trek and realizing my worth and being uplifted by the amazing cast and crew and people around me. And recognizing that I do have a place in this amazing, wonderful franchise and this universe that it's just so cool to be a part of. I'm really grateful for that experience."

With the latest episode of  Discovery  now streaming on CBS All Access, ET spoke with Alexander about how he came to the role of Gray, how playing the character has impacted his own personal growth and what he's doing to advocate for trans equality.

ET: You made your acting debut on The OA . How do you think you've grown since getting that first job?

Ian Alexander : The OA was my first-ever TV, film, professional experience. I really have grown so much as an actor and also just as a person since then. I really didn't intend on choosing acting as my career when I was younger, but once it became an option to me, I realized this is something I'm extremely passionate about. I've always loved storytelling. I've always loved performing. At the end of the day, I've always really loved making other people happy because it makes me really happy. So the fact that just by existing, and being myself, and being out and proud, and visible on a show like Star Trek , and just showing the world you can be trans and you can be happy and successful is so meaningful to me. I really am proud of myself for how much I have grown since The OA  because I'm a much more confident, self-assured person now. I really am excited to see how much further I grow in the next few years.

How did your experience playing Buck, a transgender character, on The OA , which has its own following, prepare you for Star Trek: Discovery and the fan base that surrounds it?

I think The OA and Star Trek have similar, very passionate fan bases -- people that really, deeply connect to the storylines and the characters. I am just so honored and so grateful to be a part of The OA family. Even though it is over now, there still is that impact that it's had on so many people internationally. I mean, there are fans all over the globe. So anywhere I go it's amazing to hear how I have helped impact someone's life. They say like, "Hey, like, my kids, or, my nephew, et cetera, love you." Hearing stuff like that is really awesome because I know that there's a lot of trans kids out there that never really saw themselves onscreen. And maybe my character was the first time that they felt seen. So I'm sure that's going to be the same for Star Trek as well. People have not really seen trans people, especially not a trans masculine person in a mainstream show as huge and immensely worldwide popular as Star Trek. So I'm very, very excited for that impact that these characters -- my character, Gray, and Blu del Barrio's character, Adira -- will have on the world, especially for trans teenagers and trans people in general. How did  Star Trek: Discovery and this character come to you?

I believe the writers, Alex [Kurtzman] and Michelle [Paradise], had seen my work on The OA , so The OA has really just influenced my life and my career a lot. They were really interested in bringing me in to read for a character. I actually originally auditioned for the part of Adira and yes, I strongly believe Blu is the perfect person for that role. I am so happy that they cast Blu. They loved my energy, they loved my personality and my own take that I brought to the character, so they said, "You're not right for Adira, but we're going to take this character and we're going to change their name to Gray and you can play Gray. You can be Adira's partner in crime." And I was like, "Wait, you mean, I'll get to play a character that's friends with another trans person on the show? That's amazing," which has never happened to me before. I've never had the opportunity until Star Trek to work with another trans actor. I'm really, really happy that they gave us that opportunity.

So it sounds like this was a bit similar to your experience with The OA , where they were molding the character to you and your experience?

I would say, yeah. I would say definitely similarly to The OA, the character was sort of shaped to me as the person, sort of influenced by me. I would say that with Buck Vu they already had the vision of someone who was Asian American and trans male in their heads. So they were looking for that specific person, and they found me. I don't know if it was the same for Star Trek. I don't know if they had that [in their heads].

What can you tell us about Gray? What drew you to this character?

Gray is a brilliant young Trill. He's very optimistic, just full of love and light and compassion, and he's really everybody's hype man. He really brings a lot of positivity and uplifts Adira when they need a confidence boost. Because Adira's brilliant, but they are not necessarily the most confident person. Gray's there to sort of remind them of their worth and remind them how smart and brilliant they are. I am really, really excited to be playing Gray because he's just such a cool character. And also, it's so nice to see a trans person exist onscreen without necessarily needing to exclaim to the world, "I'm trans."

How has playing him informed your own personal journey and your own personal growth? Has there been anything that has been illuminating for you as an actor?

Let me think about that, that's a beautiful question. I think playing Gray really has reassured a lot of my own self-confidence, and really boosted that belief and faith that I have in myself. Because I think I do tend to feel a lot of imposter syndrome. I think that's sort of the conundrum of a lot of other trans actors -- and just anyone in general experiences this to some extent. But especially trans actors because there are so few opportunities for us that when we finally do get those opportunities, it feels kind of alienating. It feels like we shouldn't be there because it feels sort of unexpected that we are finally getting included in ways that we weren't before. For pretty much the entire history of the film industry, trans people have been sort of a taboo topic or something that was presented as negative. So I think I really have grown a lot since joining Star Trek and realizing my worth and being uplifted by the amazing cast and crew and people around me. And recognizing that I do have a place in this amazing, wonderful franchise and this universe that it's just so cool to be a part of. I'm really grateful for that experience. In terms of writing your character and bringing authenticity to the story, did you have to educate the writers at all about the trans experience?

I definitely have not had to do any education. Thankfully, Michelle and Alex, they really know [what they're doing] and are doing the work. I think it's really important for any cis person that is writing a trans character and bringing a trans story that they consult with people that are actually going through that lived experience. I think they've done a great job with that.

When I spoke with Blu last week , they spoke very highly of how Wilson Cruz and Anthony Rapp, who broke barriers for LGBTQ+ representation on the show, and how they welcomed them into the fray. How have they helped you in guiding you through this experience?

Anthony and Wilson have really just been from Day 1 our biggest allies on set and our biggest supporters as well. They instantly took me and Blu under their wings. Same with Sonequa [Martin-Green]. Back when we were allowed to go outside and meet with people, they'd invite us out to lunch and things like that. Like, just talking to us off set and making sure that we felt welcomed and comfortable because it is really intimidating to fly out to a new city that you've never been to and to be surrounded by all these people you've never met. They really helped us feel included and we really are so grateful for the strong connection that we have now. They're such amazing people.

Between them and Blu, have you all created a queer family on set? What is it like to be on this ride together?

Absolutely. I think we really have. It's so funny because it sort of mirrors the relationship dynamics that we have in the show as well. So it's amazing that we also, off set, have this mentor-mentee, older generation of queer-younger generation of queer dynamic and relationship. It's so nice to be around other LGBT people and feel at ease and to know that you are safe and fully understood and respected. It's so important to have that. I've been really, really grateful for that family that we have.

What can you tell us about Gray's journey this season?

Without going into anything that is spoilery, I'm going to tread very carefully here. I'm excited for everyone to see how Gray's story develops, how his connection with Adira strengthens and grows over time. That connection that they have truly is special. The future of Gray is... There's a lot of exciting things coming up, especially as Gray's story progresses into season 4, which I am currently filming for. I am allowed to talk about that. I can mention Gray is coming back to season 4, you can put that in there. Gray is going to be coming back throughout the end of season 3 and then also through season 4 as well.

You're the first out transgender Asian American actor in Hollywood. What does that mean to you personally?

I'm honored and grateful to have the privilege of being able to be one of the first out Asian American trans actors on television. I'm excited because I think there's a big difference in the past few years. So many more trans actors, so many more casting calls that are just open and gender diverse. A lot more storylines that are becoming more gender inclusive for non-binary people as well. So I'm really, really excited to keep seeing progress. And also maybe eventually be able to one day work on a set that is like, there's trans people behind the camera and in front of the camera. And I'm not just one of one, or one of two.

You're also an advocate for transgender equality and mental health for LGBTQ+ youth. What do you want people to know and what are you hoping for?

I really am hoping that I can use my platform to uplift the voices of people that haven't been heard as much -- people who are Black, people who are Indigenous, people who are disabled, people who are incarcerated, people who are houseless. All of those matters of racial justice and housing, accessibility, health care, accessibility, all those things are really important to me. Because at the end of the day, I really care about people. I really have a compassion for every single human being and for animals as well. I'm a very empathetic person and I hope that people are uplifted and inspired and empowered by the things that I say and the content that I put out there online. I really want to encourage trans people to not wait around for someone to give them permission to create something. I want them to just go for it and to make whatever video you want to make. Make whatever show you want to make. Make whatever short film on your iPhone with some friends. Do whatever to make your story visible and to put yourself out there. Don't wait around for someone to give you permission.

Have you heard from your fellow actors in the trans community after your casting was announced? Or what has that kind of response been like for you?

I recently have started to connect with a larger group of trans masculine and non-binary actors, which has been healing because it felt isolating being in this industry for five years now to really only know of other trans actors, but not really know them. Blu was really the first person that I created such a strong friendship with that I was like, "I want to know other trans actors intimately. I want to know what's going on in their lives. I want to know about them as people and not just what they're acting in." So yes, recently there's this community that we've been developing amongst other trans masculine actors. I's been so helpful to know we're all together. There's so much of us actually that it's ridiculous that we're not all actively working right now because we all deserve the same opportunities. So many other actors were just ecstatic. They're like, "Yes, yes! Trans people in space, yes." I got so many ecstatic messages from other people that were like, "I saw you on national news yesterday. Like, what's up?" I got a lot of texts like that, that were like, "I literally saw you on my mom's TV." That was cool to see all of that excitement and support because I am equally as excited.

'Star Trek: Discovery' actor Doug Jones on conquering fear and stepping up screentime

Doug Jones as Captain Saru in a scene from

Mercurial mime and character actor Doug Jones has portrayed a menagerie of unique Hollywood monsters for over three decades.

His lean and lanky form was the perfect foundation for beasts and creatures in director Guillermo del Toro projects ranging from The Pale Man and The Faun in "Pan's Labyrinth" and Abe Sapien in "Hellboy" and "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," to the sexy amphibian man known as The Asset in 2018's Oscar-winning film, "The Shape of Water."

But throughout his illustrious career under layers of latex rubber, makeup, and prosthetics, it's Jones' complex role as the mannerly Kelpien officer Saru in the Paramount Plus sci-fi series, " Star Trek: Discovery " that's been his longest-running professional gig by far.

To celebrate the new "Star Trek: Discovery Season 3" Blu-ray set that landed on July 20, Space.com spoke with Jones about his promotion to Federation starship Captain and the challenges and responsibilities that entailed, along with how he's continued to develop Saru into a fan favorite and what's in store for the hoofed Kelpien as Season 4 finishes up its shoot. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Space.com: How has this recent season changed you as an actor and a person?

Doug Jones: Well, like Saru, Doug Jones had to face some fears and overcome them. I came into "Star Trek: Discovery" thinking that I was going to be second fiddle and I was happy with that position. I love being a supporting player. Taking on the Captain's chair? I knew that meant a bigger workload since more scenes need to go through the Captain and all the decisions made have to be approved so he's involved in a lot more.

[Actor] Sonequa-Martin Green is still the star of our show for sure and [her role] Michael Burnham is the character we're following, but Saru did step up his screen time quite a bit for Season 3. And that was rather intimidating because that means more 15- to 17-hour days in full makeup and contact lenses and shoes that hurt my feet. So I took a deep breath and thought, "Here we go!"

The honor of it was not lost on me: It puts me in a very small small club of actors who've been able to play Captains of Starfleet ships in this franchise. That's a very exclusive, lovely club to be a part of. And to do it as an alien species — I'm the first alien species to ever take on the Captain's chair of a title ship in the franchise. It's a huge honor.

A scene from

Space.com: Of all the iconic creatures you've portrayed in your career, what makes Saru so interesting to you creatively?

Jones: I know him better than any other character I've ever played, because I've played more of him. After three seasons, and now we're currently filming Season 4 and almost done with it, I've lived in Saru's skin more than any character I've played. I've had the time and the luxury to explore his inner workings and peel back the layers like an onion. It's like a long engagement, you find out more and more about the person you're going to marry the longer the engagement goes.

I love that Saru is not an emotionless alien. As a Kelpien, he's very connected to his emotions and he feels and plays off of all of them. I love that his care for others is something we all aspire to. He takes on his Captaincy with not only a Starfleet duty, but also in a fatherly way, looking at his whole crew as a family. As we jump to the future 930 years, all we have is each other. We're in the land of the unknown now and we do have each other still. He uses the word "together" so many times in Season 3, and that's a thought and an emotion that I really do love.

Space.com: With Saru becoming a series cornerstone and fan favorite, does that bring a level of added pressure to the role?

Jones: Pressure? Yes. And do I have to respond to that pressure? Yes. I'm a pretty lazy actor when it comes to real life. For me, less is more. So when given that responsibility of Captain, it brought on a whole world of fear. From playing Saru over those three seasons, and now the fourth, I've been inspired by him. Saru has helped inform Doug Jones on a better way to perceive the world around him. We can receive the same stimuli on two different things, but perceive it differently.

Saru goes from a fear species to losing his threat ganglia and now forging ahead with the courage and confidence he's never had before. He's still faced with the same threats and perils, but how he responds to them is that, "We can get through this." And I think Doug Jones needs to adopt that too.

If I've been faced with a big fear of more dialogue, more scene time, more responsibility on film, more fans that can be upset or happy with me, then I'm going to take it with Saru's newfound courage. Yes, this is a task I can handle, and I will.

A scene from

Space.com: What new elements did you channel into your Saru performance in Season 3?

Jones: Well, I think the butler from "Downton Abbey" is still a part of Saru. He's very prim and proper and loves to adhere to protocols and then diplomacy. He's all about that. I also think there's a little bit of Christopher Meloni's Detective Stabler from "Law & Order: SVU." He walks with a very cocky confidence and I think Saru added that to his demeanor once he lost his threat ganglia. Now that he's a Captain, he has to have that kind of confidence walking into a room, knowing that his opinion does matter and he might be right about whatever the topic is.

Space.com: With Season 4 nearly wrapped, what can you tease about what's to come?

Jones: Since we're still filming, I can't tell you "jack-nothing."

Last time we saw Saru, he was on his home planet of Kaminar helping Su'Kal find his way as a Kelpien. He's handed the Captain's chair over to Captain Burnham and she flies off on a new mission with the crew. So I'm not stripped of my Captain status with Starfleet. How do they plug me in, and how do they utilize me in Season 4, that's what we have yet to discover.

Star Trek: Discovery

StarTrek.com

CBS All Access, ViacomCBS’ subscription video on-demand and live streaming service, today announced that season three of Star Trek: Discovery will introduce the Star Trek franchise’s first non-binary and transgender characters, furthering the “Star Trek” universe’s ongoing commitment to Gene Roddenberry’s original vision of celebrating diversity and inclusion.

The Star Trek universe’s first non-binary character is Adira, played by Blu del Barrio. Adira is highly intelligent with a confidence and self-assurance well beyond their years. They will find a new home on the U.S.S. Discovery and form an unexpected bond with Lt. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz). The first transgender character is Gray, portrayed by Ian Alexander. Gray is empathetic, warm and eager to fulfill his lifelong dream of being a Trill host, but he will have to adapt when his life takes an unexpected turn.

“ Star Trek has always made a mission of giving visibility to underrepresented communities because it believes in showing people that a future without division on the basis of race, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation is entirely within our reach,” said Michelle Paradise, co-showrunner and executive producer. “We take pride in working closely with Blu del Barrio, Ian Alexander, and Nick Adams at GLAAD to create the extraordinary characters of Adira and Gray, and bring their stories to life with empathy, understanding, empowerment and joy.”

Star Trek: Discovery - Blu del Barrio

Blu del Barrio is a non-binary actor who uses they/them pronouns. Del Barrio was in their final year of studies at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art when they auditioned for the role of Adira. Del Barrio has been acting in theater and short films since the age of 7, and they’re incredibly excited to make their television acting debut in season three of Discovery .

Star Trek: Discovery - Ian Alexander

Ian Alexander is a 19-year-old actor who uses they/them and he/him pronouns. He is best known for their roles as Buck Vu on the Netflix series “The OA” and Lev in Naughty Dog’s video game “The Last of Us Part II.” They are the first out transgender Asian-American person to act on television. They are also an advocate for transgender equality, racial justice and mental health awareness for LGBTQ+ youth.

The third season of Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 15. New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery ’s 13-episode third season will be available on demand weekly on Thursdays, exclusively for CBS All Access subscribers in the United States.

Early life [ ]

In Gray's youth, he hated a mole he had on his right hand, but eventually came to terms with it, considering he had "bigger things to think about" while transitioning . ( DIS : " Anomaly (DIS) ")

Gray shared with Zora that he had chosen his name, not for any specific meaning, but just because he liked it. ( DIS : " Stormy Weather ")

Gray surgical hologram

Adira once made a quilt of special memories they shared with Gray as a gift , including a time they broke the replicator causing it to repeatedly produce apples , and a time they played " imaginary chess ." ( DIS : " Forget Me Not ")

In the 3180s , Gray was joined to the Trill symbiont Tal . ( DIS : " Forget Me Not ") Soon after, Gray took up the cello , influenced by his past host Kasha Tal . ( DIS : " Scavengers ") Gray displayed a number of other musical instruments (including a sarangi, an esraj, a dulcimer, and a tamburica with a bow) on the walls of his quarters . ( DIS : " Forget Me Not ")

Gray Tal's instruments

Not long after joining, in 3188 , an asteroid collided with the ship Gray and Adira were on, fatally injuring Gray. The Tal symbiont survived and was implanted into Adira. Since Adira was Human, they briefly lost all their memories of their life before joining, including those of Gray. Once Adira regained their memories in 3189 and, in addition, those from the Tal symbiont, Gray began to appear to them as a seemingly independent entity with whom they could interact. ( DIS : " Forget Me Not ")

Appearing to Adira [ ]

Gray later appeared to Adira aboard the USS Discovery while Adira was working in engineering , and later in the mess hall , indicating that Adira needed to make more friends on the ship. When Lieutenant Commander Paul Stamets commented that it looked like Adira was talking to themself, Adira opened up to him about the unexpected way they were still able to interact with Gray's "soul," prompting Stamets to show his support, and Gray to note: "I like this guy." ( DIS : " Scavengers ")

After not having appeared to Adira for days, Gray returned during Philippa Georgiou 's memorial service, apologizing to Adira and noting his regret that he could no longer interact with the world. Gray later offered suggestions to Adira while they tried to repair Discovery 's shields . ( DIS : " Su'Kal ")

Culber and Gray in Su'Kal's world

Visible as a holographic Vulcan in Su'Kal's environment

When Adira travelled to the dilithium planet , the holographic environment aboard the KSF Khi'eth detected the presence of Gray and made him visible to Saru and Hugh Culber , albeit in the form of a Vulcan . While there, he took advantage of his non-corporeal form to scout into the high-radiation area of the ship beyond the holographic environment and reported that the ship was disintegrating. As Su'Kal prepared to deactivate the holographic environment, Gray was distraught that he would lose his visible form, saying that both he and the Tal symbiont were "stuck." At this, Dr. Culber promised that the crew would find a way to allow him to manifest visibly on an ongoing basis. ( DIS : " That Hope Is You, Part 2 ")

Reincorporation [ ]

Gray golem preparation

Preparing Gray's new synthetic body

Culber's research led him to the work of 24th century cyberneticist Dr. Altan Soong , whose Soong Method could allow Gray to reincorporate into a synthetic golem . ( DIS : " Anomaly (DIS) ") When the synth body was complete, Trill Guardian Xi performed an atypical zhian'tara , unjoining Gray from the Tal symbiont and transfering him to the new body. Though it took time for Gray to recover from the procedure, he eventually woke up, guided back with Adira by his side. ( DIS : " Choose to Live ")

Gray later encouraged Adira to go on a Starfleet cadet training exercise. ( DIS : " All Is Possible ")

When Zora became overwhelmed, Gray played a game with her to help Zora deal with her struggles. The two bonded and Gray had Zora warn Captain Michael Burnham when she sensed something on the outer hull. Gray then helped Zora deal with her distress over the situation and the loss of Ensign Cortez and explained the issue to the crew. ( DIS : " Stormy Weather ")

Gray later decided to leave Discovery and train as a Guardian on the Trill homeworld. Despite the hardships that would come, Gray and Adira committed themselves to maintaining their romantic relationship long distance. Adira took some time off to help Gray get acclimated. ( DIS : " ...But to Connect ") When Adira returned before the mission to meet Species 10-C , they told Burnham that Gray was doing well and enjoying his Guardian training and they both believed that Gray was where he needed to be. ( DIS : " The Galactic Barrier ")

Background information [ ]

Gray Tal was portrayed by Ian Alexander .

The post-mortem interactions between Grey and Adira are very similar to how the Rite of Emergence was portrayed in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode " Field of Fire ".

Gray was stated in initial promotional materials to be transgender like his actor, but it was not addressed on screen in Season 3. [1] It was eventually confirmed in Season 4 episode " Anomaly (DIS) " when Gray mentions his transition.

In an interview with Michelle Paradise , she stated that Gray's storyline will be followed up in season 4 and " That storyline is incredibly important to us. " [2] She expanded on that in a separate interview stating " Representation matters. It matters to see a version of yourself on screen. It matters there are non-binary and transgender characters. It matters that there is a Black woman in the captain's chair. It matters that there is a gay couple on our show. We will continue to do that for the show, and the world we live in, but also, to honor the Star Trek legacy. And to be super clear, we will pay that moment off in Season 4. Gray will be seen. That promise will be paid off. " [3]

Star Trek: Discovery Finally Gave Us A Closer Look At The Franchise's Most Mysterious Villain

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Discovery."

"Star Trek" might represent an idealistic vision of a bolder and brighter future, but the last few seasons of "Discovery" have proven that there will always be bad guys with a penchant for muddying up those ambitions in unexpected ways -- even in the 32nd Century. While the Borg, Romulans, and the warlord Khan often have a stranglehold on the title of "Best 'Trek' villains," one alien species in particular has remained shrouded in mystery for decades. First mentioned in foreboding whispers in "The Next Generation" and finally seen in the flesh (well, so to speak) in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," the Breen have played a significant role throughout the franchise in the years since ... yet Trekkies still had to wait until now to actually see what lies underneath their distinctive helmets.

The advantage of never showing us a Breen's face, as it turns out, is that "Discovery" was able to hide one in plain sight all along.

So far, the addition of scavengers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) has felt like a shoe waiting to drop. The close-knit pair continue to frustrate Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the rest of the Discovery crew (nowhere more dramatically than in last week's time-traveling bottle episode ), remaining one step ahead of our heroes in their quest to recover whatever Progenitor technological treasure hides at the end of this galaxy-spanning rainbow. About midway through episode 5, titled "Mirrors," the writers unleashed their big twist. L'ak, thus far considered an unknown type of extraterrestrial, actually reveals himself as a Breen. Or, rather, an emotional Moll lets this information slip by accident during a particularly fraught moment. In the process, "Trek" finally unmasked its most enigmatic aliens.

Putting On A Brave Face (Or Two)

In the span of one episode, "Discovery" officially made "Star Trek" history.

Long treated as a mystery that left everything up to our own imaginations, the Breen reveal puts a specific face to what had previously only been a name ... actually, make that two faces. While Moll and L'ak come to a tense faceoff with Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) on board the mirror-universe version of the USS Enterprise while trapped in multidimensional space (it's a long story), the writers treat this as the perfect opportunity to delve into the scavengers' shared past. In a series of flashbacks, we find out that L'ak was part of the Breen royal family and disgraced by his powerful Primarch uncle. Hoping to earn his way back to his people's good graces, all his plans are upended by a torrid romance with then-courier Moll. With their backs against the wall and nowhere else to turn, the lovers choose their own path altogether and, along the way, L'ak reveals his most private aspect of himself: his Breen face.

Of course, the episode adds another twist and introduces the concept of the Breen having two  faces -- a solid, corporeal form they can present to others if they so choose, and a more translucent one. (Really, it can only be described as  squishier. ) In fact, this creepy and altogether unique visage symbolizes a much more meaningful difference, as we learn when L'ak's uncle calls his chosen face an "insult to your heritage." Apparently, most Breen have moved beyond this "weak" form and consider this some sort of societal faux pas. In just a few minutes, we discover more about Breen culture than we've ever known before.
